THE DUCKS ARE BACK! Meet the Leos

Message from the President of the Calne Lions Club It is with tremendous pride that I serve Calne Lions Club in the role as their president for 2011/12. It is an honour and a pleasure to help steer the club onto ever greater projects and fundraising activities. To have such fun amongst people who have become firm friends whilst doing so is a huge bonus. It is such a privilege to be a part of the lion’s family and have the opportunity to go to places and meet people that I never imagined that I would. I am also immensely proud of the high regard in which our club is held within the town of Calne and also more widely. 02

We currently number 30 members of both genders and ranging in age from 39 to 82 from a diverse background and cross section of society. I know that I have met and made friends with people who I would never had encountered otherwise, even in a town as compact as Calne and my life is all the richer for having done so. We do not ask for a huge commitment on the part of member’s time as we realize that most people lead busy lives. Being a lion can take up as little as a couple of hours a month and only more should you feel you wish to do so.

We enjoy a full and varied social life with outings, skittles matches, concerts, meals and weekends away to name but a few activities. We certainly believe in having a good time! So…if you would like to help put the FUN in FUNdraising, come along and meet us. Lion President, Julie Shearsby

Local Schools and Children’s Groups also have their own race – letting their creativity run riot on their decoy ducks. It is a great community event that attracts crowds of around 3000 people to the town. There are craft, food and

Leo club What is the Leo Club?

Leo Club History

Being a Leo is a great way to serve your community, develop leadership skills and make new friends.

opportunities and can increase your Lions club’s community exposure, by attracting new audiences such as young professionals and parents.

Sponsoring a Leo club brings new, young energy to your Lions club. Leo clubs provide youth volunteer

There is a large Leo network of more than 6,100 Leo clubs in 138 countries with approximately 152,000 members.

Coach Jim Graver started the Leo ball rolling in 1957 and chances are that ball was a baseball. Graver was the baseball coach of the Abington High School in Pennsylvania, USA and an active member of the Glenside Lions Club. With help from his fellow Lion, William Ernst, the first Leo club was charted on 5 December 1957. As the world’s first Leo club, the Abington High School Leo Club created the Leo acronym – Leadership, Equality, Opportunity – and they chose their school colours, maroon and gold to serve as the Leo club colours. Later, Equality was changed to Experience.

8

In October 1967, the board of directors of Lions Clubs International adopted the Leo Club Program as an official program of the association. The Leo Club Program has been growing strong for over 50 years. Community service remains the cornerstone of the program. Like their Lion counterparts, Leo club members enjoy serving their neighbours and watching positive results unfold.

Leo Club Motto Leadership – Develop skills as a project organizer, time manager and team leader. Experience – Learn how teamwork, cooperation and collaboration can bring exciting changes to your community and the world. Opportunity – Make friends and feel the rewards of community service.

Leo Club Objective To provide the youth of the world with an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community.
