Michael Clements | Durant Democrat This Durant High School senior cruised out of high school and into his future in this vintage Corvette. This classic convertible was one of many vehicles that participated in the drive through commencement exercise

Cruising into their future Durant Class of 2020 holds historic drive-through commencement BY MICHAEL CLEMENTS michael@durantdemocrat.com The Durant High School Class of 2020 topped off an historic school year with a firstof-its-kind, drive-through graduation ceremony. As he waited for the parade of graduating seniors to arrive at the High School, Superintendent Duane Merideth expressed optimism at the event’s popularity. “We think this is going to be more special than any (graduation ceremony) before,” Merideth said. Merideth, Durant High School Principal Cheryl Conditt and other Durant Independent School District staff came up with the novel commencement exercise to make up for a school year effectively cut short by the COVID-19 Coronavirus. The Oklahoma State Board of Education voted on March 25 to close Oklahoma’s public schools to stem the spread of the virus that originated in Wuhan China. The closure meant that the 2020 graduating class would have no prom, no spring sports, no band, choir, debate or academic competitions, or club activities, nothing other than online classes and checking in with teachers until the year ended. Conditt said District leadership was determined not to let the graduating class miss out on everything. “This is a milestone in their

life,” Conditt said. Merideth said they looked for something unique for Durant’s graduates. Many schools, including Southeastern Oklahoma State University, opted for virtual ceremonies. Merideth said that was a good idea, but he didn’t feel it was quite enough. He said that students and their families deserved something as close to a traditional commencement as possible in the age of social distancing, hand sanitizer and protective masks. It was important to keep the ceremony on the original graduation date because the graduates and their families had been planning for a May 21 graduation since the year began. Merideth said they had only a few weeks to pull of the ceremony which included a parade and radio broadcast. Merideth said district staff, the City of Durant police and fire departments, the Durant Area Chamber of Commerce, KLBC radio and many others have pitched in. “We have a community that has come together. I could not be prouder of our district,” Merideth said. The ceremony began at 4 p.m. with an online video featuring honor graduates making speeches, reciting poetry, and making other presentations. The feature was hosted online at www.fbcdurant.

Durant Independent School District Superintendent Duane Merideth presents a future Oklahoma State University Cowboy with her diploma during the Durant High School graduation ceremony for 2020. The event is the first drivethrough graduation ceremony that anyone can recall and was organized to honor the class that missed out on many of the staples of a high school senior’s final year.

The 2020 Band seniors are a special group of students. We’ve had a memorable year and an unusual ending; however, they will succeed because of the work ethic and skills they learned by being a band team member. As their director, I am proud of their accomplishments in high school and I know they will be successful in their chosen field. Thank you for sharing the last 7 years with the Pride of Durant.

The Class of 2020 then paraded through town beginning at 12th and Main proceeding down Main before taking a left on 1st Street, then to Gerlach Drive. The graduates followed Gerlach to the main entrance loop of the high school. Once there they lined

up to receive their diplomas in their cars. Much of the event was livestreamed on the Internet. Thursday night Conditt said she was happy that her students would get something special for their sendoff. As she waited for the parade to arrive, Conditt said that

while the commencement was unique, her wish for the graduating seniors was the same she’s had for all her graduating classes. “We wish them all the success in the world,” Conditt said. “Just don’t forget us, come back and see us.”

Way to Go! What is a gap year? And should grads take one? Members of the class of 2020 have many decisions to make in the coming months. Many high school students enroll in trade schools or colleges

after graduation, while college graduates start their careers or begin their pursuit of advanced degrees when their undergrad days draw to a close. But

more and more high school and college graduates are taking gap years. According to the SEE GAP, PAGE 20

May your graduation be the beginning of many more achievements to come.

Congratulations Colby Cummins! Love, Marie Risner

Schools closed, but the work went on BY MICHAEL CLEMENTS michael@durantdemocrat.com According to his mother, Connor Wade thought he had hit vacation pay dirt when the Oklahoma State Board of Education closed schools on March 25. The Durant Intermediate School student had just returned from Camp Goddard and saw an extended summer before him. “Getting back into (a classroom) routine was a little bit of a struggle,” said his Mom, Terri Nixon. Connor’s older sister, Olivia Wilson, had a different kind of struggle. While Connor dreamed of breaking the classroom chains, Olivia was coming to grips with all she was missing. She was a graduating honors student concurrently enrolled in classes at Durant High School and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. While her little brother focused on getting his school work done quickly so as not to miss any

Wilson and other students had to adjust to completing school at home while missing many of the activities and milestones that graduating seniors enjoyed in past years. bonus vacation time, Wilson tried to focus on her college courses and not the canceled band, choir, academic and social activities she had been looking forward to.

“She went into a little bit of a funk, but then she realized she’s got bigger fish to handle,” Nixon said. Charlotte Hamil’s sons, Drew, and Zacha-

ry, also had to cope with the unexpected time on their hands. Like Wilson, the Hamil brothers, are honor students. The Durant Independent School District adminis-

tration decided that students would end the year with the grades they had when everything shutdown unless they wanted or needed to improve their grades. Students who needed to pass, or who simply wanted to improve their GPA, could receive work packets each week and do online classes. Under this plan, a student could only improve their grades. Any work that had a negative impact would not be counted. As honor students Wilson and the Hamils opted not to do the extra work. Hamil said her sons took advantage of the time to hone their skills in some of their favorite pursuits. Zachary, who will be a senior next year, spent much of his time working on animation and maintaining his YouTube channel. Drew is preparing for his sophomore year, and focused on music. Connor, like many of his classmates, took the work packet. He made

the most efficient use of his time by completing all the work on Monday, leaving the rest of his week free. Nixon said both her kids were helped by teachers who checked in with them regularly. In Connor’s case they ensured he stayed focused and provided the assistance they would have provided in the classroom. For Olivia, they helped her remain connected to the school life that she was missing. Hamil and her husband operate a home health business and Nixon works for the Choctaw Nation. Both have been working from home. Hamil was impressed with how well her sons took the change stride. Both Moms were initially concerned over how they would handle the time at home. “My boys probably handled it better than I did, it was like a shock to my system. They were like ‘It is what it is,’” SEE CLOSED, PAGE 22

American Gap Year Association, a gap year is defined as an experimental semester or full academic year taken between high school and college grads in order to deepen practical, professional and personal awareness. Students often take a break from school as a chance to travel or gain some professional experience. Others use gap years as a chance for personal exploration before moving on to the next chapter in their lives. Gap years may once have been looked at unfavorably, but they have evolved from such perceptions into oppor-

tunities to volunteer abroad, learn a new language in a foreign land, visit one’s ancestral homeland, or work as an intern. While many students take gap years prior to entering college, even college graduates can benefit from taking time off after earning their degrees. Gap years are now seen as a way to improve a curriculum vitae and gain relevant work experience in a particular field. The resource GapYear.com indicates employers actively employ people who have taken a gap year, prefering candidates who have real-world experience. Preparation is necessary before diving head first into a gap

year. Students can speak with people who have already taken gap years and ask questions. Graduates should approach the decision of whether or not take a gap year just as they would any other large, life-changing decision. Experts say that it can take between nine and 12 months to plan a gap-year itinerary. Finances are a consideration, and gap years require ample savings and a carefully constructed budget in order to be transformed from a dream into a reality. Gap years are a growing trend that can help students improve their résumés, see the world and gain invaluable experience.

Hamil said. Nixon said the biggest issue was often computer access with both Wilson and Conner needing the online time. Hamil said that once they got into a schedule, they found some positives. She said they have always tried to have dinner as

a family. Since everyone was working from home nightly family dinners was almost guaranteed. She said Zachary told her he was grateful for the family time. “We’re kind of lucky we’re getting this extra time with (Dad),” Zachary told her. Nixon is appreciative of the drive-through graduation ceremony Durant hosted for the

senior class. She said it helped Wilson and her friends to salvage at least one special memory from their milestone year. Driving down Main Street and hearing people cheer and encourage them reminded the young people that their families, community, and school district were standing behind them. “It was amazing,” Nixon said.

Gift ideas for high school graduates High school graduation is a significant milestone in the lives of teenagers. The moment a teenager receives a high school diploma marks the culmination of years of hard work, and many parents and extended family members reward that hard work with gifts. The transition from high school student to college student or working professional is significant, and various items can help make that transition go as smoothly as possible. • Travel gear: Whether it’s utilized during road trips with roommates or on those handful of occasions when students come home on holiday breaks, travel gear can make for a useful gift for new high school graduates. A sturdy backpack/ duffel bag combo can be ideal. It’s great for college students who might not be ready for more expensive luggage, and it can be ideal for high school students taking gap years to do some overseas traveling before enrolling in college. • Coffee machine: A pot of fresh coffee can make late-night cram sessions or hours spent typing research papers into the

wee hours of the morning more manageable. For students who will be living in crowded dorm rooms, opt for small coffee machines that don’t take up much space, such as those that are traditionally found inside hotel rooms. • Television: Parents want to imagine their college-bound teenagers spending hours holed up in the library. But college kids watch plenty of television, too, so a new television can make for a great gift that figures to get ample use. • Academic planner: College course loads tend to be considerably more demanding than high school coursework. An academic planner can

help new college students manage the rigors of their coursework by encouraging them to plan their days and weeks, ensuring no classes are missed and no assignments go unfinished. • Cash: Cash can make a great gift whether a grad is heading off to college or entering the workforce. Cash can help college students pay for their books and help those entering the workforce purchase a reliable car that will help them get around. Gifts for newly minted high school graduates can help them transition to the next phase of their lives, whether that will begin on a college campus or in the workforce.

Graduation season is a bustling time of year. Not only are there many school-sanctioned, graduation-related events to attend, but also job fairs or other opportunities for grads to contend with. Many soon-to-be graduates also host parties of their own. Even though the school lessons may be finished, there is still much to learn — especially as it applies to throwing a successful party that marks the end of school. 1. Set a budget. As with any other party planning, a budget is key to determining the scope and affordability of what you may have in mind. It may dictate whether you’re hosting a party at home with some finger foods or hosting something more elaborate. 2. Speak to your graduate. Ask the future graduate what he or she desires of the party. After all, this is about the grad and not necessarily the parents. Does he or she want a party at all? If so, should it be an intimate gathering or a come-one, come-all event? 3. Pick a date carefully. If your town’s school has graduation in May

or June, you’ll be fighting the crowds and competing with many other people for vendors and services. Think about hosting the graduation party after party season slows down, such as in July. This reduces the likelihood of scheduling conflicts. 4. Send invitations early. The experts at Shutterfly.com advise sending invitations at least a month in advance of the party. This way guests can mark the date and plan accordingly. Formal invitations are fitting for a formal occasion, so skip the casual invite text and use a paper or digital invitation instead. 5. Clue in neighbors. If the idea is to have a party at home, don’t leave neighbors in the dark about a large group of people descending on the street. Be courteous and let them know you’re expecting crowds and noise. Better yet, invite some neighbors to join in the fun. 6. Provide extra seating. Give guests plenty of places to congregate. Borrow or rent extra tables and chairs to maximize comfort. 7. Consider catering. Whether you host a

party at home or at a venue, professional caterers can take a big load off of your shoulders. Let the experts calculate how much food is needed and then be on call to set up chafing dishes or buffet bars. If your grad prefers fast food, many franchises now offer catering as well. 8. Set up beverage stations. Chances are you’ll have a mix of adults and underage guests in attendance. Set up alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverage stations that are clearly marked. Enlist the help of someone to monitor the spirits so that everyone drinks responsibly. 9. Share the memories. A photo board or another way to highlight photos of the graduate can take guests on a trip down memory lane. 10. Plan some activities. Whether it’s a DJ, a favorite game like volleyball or a karaoke machine, give guests something to do to stay engaged. Graduation parties are something to think about well in advance of the big day. With planning and follow-through, special occasions can be successful.
