THE TEAM EDITOR’S LETTER
What’s the best Christmas present you’ve ever had? I can still remember mine: a set of gliterry gel pens my parents gave me when I was about 10 years old. That was probably the start of my obsession with sets of coloring and art materials but I never got around to using them though because they were so pretty to look at! Since then, I fell in love with seeing color and the endless combinations of various things around you. And this is also one of my driving forces in creating Stache and maintaining it with the lovely and ever-hardworking Stache team. This month, we went back to our roots and declared another all-out art issue for December. It is just a reminder for us that this is why this magazine exists. There are a lot of fresh and new talent out there and the market needs more creative people to inject a little more passion in the industry. We’re here to create a platform for our readers and we are more than happy to present 21 contributors who gladly lent their artworks and original songs (!) to us. The past 12 months have been amazing to us and we just want to thank all of you for your continuous support. Here’s to another year with Stache (filled with major changes and better things too)! Happy Holidays, Maine Manalansan, EIC P.S. You can download the music contributions on our website!

CHRISTOPH SAGEMULLER I’m fascinated with ideas and emotions, and how they are unique to every individual. In my art, I try to incorporate the thoughts and feelings in subtle ways, like the colors, the composition and the shapes and forms I use. I tend to stay away from cliches and think of other ways to represent things. The forms and lines I use are usually curved so that it gives a sense of continuity and fluidity.

ALLY DALLOWAY I live in North Wales, where there are actually more sheep than people. I’ve loved drawing for as long as I can remember, though I never thought I’d go in to something like illustration until I’d discovered it! Most of my inspiration comes from parts of everyday life and reoccurring feelings I find myself and others have too. I recently dropped out of school to carry on drawing (never been good at school, it’s the whole concentration thing i think) which probably seems really mad but I’m trying to be positive about the future as I can be!

Albiz Verceles I’m a 24-year-old devout follower of everything sonic based in Canada. This song is called “These Waves” and it’s about the beaches of San Juan, La Union. I was heavily captivated by the scenery that it prompted me personally to write a song about it. I guess I’m just really fond of bodies of water and everything that relates to them.
INKY CALLORA I was born and raised in a family of musicians, but going to University in Baguio really made me fall deeply in love with Jazz. Losing myself in Chet Baker’s sexy trumpet solos and Ella Fitzgerald’s flawless scatting is the most beautiful feeling. For me, there really is no such thing as too much jazz.

SHADOW GODS LITERATURE
SHADOW GODS
A LESSON IN NUMBERS
MY HANDS.
Don’t trust the things that move in the dark -
The clock is alive and so are you
Sometimes they are just hands who do whatever I want them to do. They press keys, hold spoons and forks and chopsticks, open bottles and cans. Things that are automatic and necessary, things that don’t need much thought processing.
their footsteps too light, their breath too silent, their bodies too lithe cloaked with sun-baked skin that lives on skilled sinews and secret intents, master chameleons that wear one face but go by different names sons of Erebus, daughters of Nox, rulers of the night and the temples of dreamers.
I keep chasing after time and measuring my size but you’ll never catch up with me, even if you never sleep I keep to the numbers to tell me I’m going somewhere but the numbers aren’t absolute nothing is the symbols on the road signs indecipherable, so come closer and wipe them clean
Sometimes they can be stubborn. They like to cling on to things that are not theirs to keep. Balled into fists, they hold on to people who have already left, people who simply don’t care anymore. Sometimes people are like sand. They slip away no matter how strong your grip is. My hands don’t know this yet. They’re a hard pair to teach.
written in language different from Sometimes they just want to be the one held. Sometimes they like to be in my mind intertwined with another’s fingers, warm palm against warm palm. so learn it Sometimes they just want to be touched like that. Sometimes it’s … all I need. but maybe it’s time to speak differently. and learn it well, all of it. The clock is alive and so am I.

GIRL ON THE TRAIN LITERATURE
I. Something must have been wrong with the girl, her classmates thought after they realized that she would not attend their class that afternoon. It was, of course, surprising for she was known as one of the most diligent students in the class: on hell days, it has not been her practice to skip her classes like others did just to cram for other requirements. So what happened to her? They kept on wondering. II. A new story has to be born, she kept thinking. There was only two weeks left before their manuscripts were due and there she was, still unmotivated to write. She could not even come up with a new story concept yet. And so she began to panic. But it could take her only Php44 to see something that could inspire her to write, she realized soon. Although hesitant at first because of the thought that she could miss a lot by not attending two classes for a day, she made up her mind that she would push through the idea and make an end-to-end train ride more than what it usually meant for many. She could use it to gain inspiration, after all. Aware of her tendencies to freeze
while staring at something— which was usually nothing—that could make her look like a psycho, she asked someone to be with her to at least have someone to talk to when necessary. He could not let her down that time, of course. They had been real good friends. And so the next day, they met somewhere in the campus and immediately went to the train station. They were too careful, avoiding bumping into any of her classmates who could report her to her professors if they would ever make a big issue out of her absence. They never saw any of them and they both felt safe. During the train ride, she looked down to the establishments where the train passed by most of the time. She admired how they all managed to remain standing even after years of tests and trials. She also looked at the people, too and she saw slices of their lives. They were what she was looking for, she realized. She would write about them. She was able to see small children laughing like there were no tomorrow while just beside them were some adults who, despite them looking so tired and even sickly, never failed to smile exchange interesting stories with their friends as they sold things on the streets, mostly food for
snacks and some refreshment. She also saw some high school students who roamed around in their school uniforms. By the way they walked and laughed as they did, she could already tell how free they were. She also did not miss the sight of workers walking along the city’s busy streets. Some of them were in their meticulously-ironed uniforms while some were just in their old work clothes, almost tattered. She was aware that of all the people in the world, they were the ones who knew best what hard work meant. She knew that in their hands was perfection while in their hearts were wells of dedication. All these people, although she only saw them from a distance, she admired them all. She admired them the way she admired cab drivers whose wisdom were priceless, she admired them the way she admired people living near river beds who were always strong and hopeful, no matter what. She knew their stories were great and they had to be shared to the world. She finally gained some inspiration. She would write about them; she would make a story out of what she saw.

LITERATURE GIRL ON THE TRAIN
Their ride was up to the last station and they decided to take a short walk before riding the train back to the station they came from. There, they were also able to see different people, different faces of live. After the walk, they went back to the station. While heading to the platform and exchanging stories, she felt her phone vibrating inside the pocket of her tight jeans. A bit shocked, she immediately got the phone from one of her pockets and accidentally pressed okay. It was an unregistered number, though so she got confused and ended the call after just a short while. But it puzzled her, of course. And to end her wonder, she sent a message to the number and asked who it was. It was her professor, she learned after getting a reply. And because she was already panicking, she just told him that she was not in the class. She was on the train. III. The next meeting, everyone in the class already knew what really happened. In the classroom, she entered as though she were a celebrity, most wanted because of a hot issue that mattered to everyone. Some even asked her if she was just fine, as if she could not sense that they were just fishing for some information. Some, on the other hand, had the guts and dared to directly 62

ask her about her “moment.” To all of these, she did not know exactly how to react. She was not quite sure if she would be mad out of embarrassment or if she would just laugh at everything and simply enjoy her new-found “stardom.” But regardless of how she felt about things, their minds seemed hard to change for the mean time. They were having fun, sure. They even laughed at the story of how the truth was discovered. It was already past four in the afternoon and the professor was still stuck in the middle of heavy traffic. Already running late for his class, he had to contact someone in the said class to give an instruction. Randomly, he selected a name in his class list. He chose her and dialed her number. There were three rings. After the third one, she picked up the phone. “Hello?” The professor greeted. But she did not answer back. Instead, he heard the voice of a guy talking about something he could not understand. One, two, three seconds passed and the call ended. After several minutes, the professor received a message asking who he was. His number must have not been saved in her phone so she was wondering. The professor replied and introduced
himself. He also told the girl to tell her classmates to write an essay regarding a particular topic while waiting for him to arrive. He was still on his way to back to the campus, he just gave a lecture at another university. But she was not in the class, the girl admitted. She was, to his surprise, on a train. And she was not alone. She was with someone, and it was a guy. A story was just born.
