TRANSPORT

THE PROJECT FROM PILLOW TO PILLOW is an immersive, fourteen week TESTLAB BERLIN project that took place during Summer 2014 abroad at PASADENA ART CENTER COLLEGE OF DESIGN’S BRAND NEW POP-UP DESIGN BIKINI BERLIN STUDIO IN BERLIN, GERMANY. Berlin attracts one of the world’s most diverse tourist populations—making it also a city that fears losing its diversity to outside travelers.

We seek to design a living experience that challenges current conventions without being intrusive to the locals. By redefining the hotel as more than just a place to sleep, we have designed a fully integrated experience that caters to both what the city uniquely offers as well as the needs of our specific traveler.

MEET THE TEAM

FOUR MULTI-DISCIPLINARY DESIGNERS were selected to make their way across the globe from Pasadena, California and team up to WORK COLLABORATIVELY for the next three months in Berlin, designing through the lens of an URBAN EXPLORER.

LAUNCH WEEK Immediately upon arriving, our team set out on a mission to get to know a new place in very little time. We ventured all around to each kiez—zones in Berlin, each with its individual characteristics, making them feel like little cities of their own.

NO 3G NO SIRI SO LEARN TO READ A MAP

We got stuck in the middle of nowhere a few times, and Terry had to buy new tennis shoes to ease the pain of blisters, but eventually we figured out the paper maps and U-Bahn stations. Consequently also stopped by a mass of cafes to refuel and find an excuse to sit down and figure out why we can’t seem to find the street we need to be on. (The map’s upside down, dude.)

`

We quickly got the hang of it and began to adjust to the Berlin culture as well. Every thing from the cuisine, the nightlife, and the shopping... Our team embraced the local flavor and found ourselves beginning to feel like a part of the neighborhood.

LET THE BRAINSTORM BEGIN

THE URBAN EXPLORER During the first several weeks of research, we traveled Berlin through the lens of an Urban Explorer. Our team began to inquire what interests and values our traveler would have. We found our demographic to be more abstract and harder to define, since an Urban Explorer could take on a wider range of physical appearance, age, or ethnicity. It is more of a mindset and attitude – an adventurous spirit is something within the soul.

THREE INITIAL CONCEPTS

CONCEPT ONE NACHBAR

NACHBAR— WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD. Imagine a place made up of multiple locations spaced around the city, where you can experience Berlin’s unique neighborhoods through the lens of a local.

THE BUILDING— NOT ABOUT THE BRAND, BUT THE EXPERIENCE. Imagine a place that repurposes a small percentage of an unused building and leaves the remaining untouched, inspiring explorers to wander on their own. An experience that taps into geography, the past, and the unlikely. The Building translates the ephemeral nature

THE JOURNEY As we progressed in our findings, we realized the need to create an experience that caters to the Urban Explorer’s tendency to move from place to place. What makes Berlin special is the fact that it is made up of its neighborhoods, its waterways, and its greenspace. This makes it possible for the Urban Explorer to see the city through three lenses: culture (lifestyle), time (history), and place (geography.) We began to look at an experience that touched on each area of focus — what if Transport was a basecamp for an explorer’s journey through all three worlds? This would encourage venturing out into all parts that Berlin has to offer... shifting a traveler’s perspective into something more holistic.

CITY PEOPLE In order to experience what each unique neighborhood has to offer, we did everything the local Berliners would do – from staying out late at popular nightclubs to having an authentic Turkish lunch in Kreuzberg.

THE RIVER

THE SPREE During initial research, we discovered the importance of the river to the city. Berlin’s original center was built along the Spree River, which extends through the Saxony, Brandenburg, and Berlin states of Germany. For this reason, a rich sense of history can be experienced when taking a boat ride around Berlin. To dive deeper into research, our group spent an entire Wednesday on a nine hour boat ride with about 40 senior citizens.

AN ESCAPE There are many hidden gems located in the outskirts of Berlin that offer an escape from the city life. Although they require venturing out, the areas are still very accessible by public transportation. Many regular tourists overlook these beauties, because they only focus on the bustling areas such as Mitte and Kreuzberg. However, Berliners spend much of their time during both winters and summers in the outskirts for sport recreation and music festivals.

THE WEEK 7 MIDTERM BLOOD, SWEAT, AND TEARS

MIDTERM CONCEPT

BERLIN IS ITS NEIGHBORHOODS, ITS WATERWAYS, AND ITS GREENSPACE. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN A HOSPITALTY EXPERIENCE THAT SHIFTS YOUR PERSPECTIVE, WITH TRANSPORT AS THE BASECAMP FOR YOUR JOURNEY. EMBARK ON AN ADVENTURE THROUGH CULTURE, TIME, AND PLACE.

A HOLISTIC VIEW At midterm, our concept proposed for our hospitality experience to offer spending time at all three zones so that our travelers could have a truly AUTHENTIC BERLIN EXPERIENCE.

BASECAMP LOCATIONS

We have two living quarters—one in Kreuzberg for an urban adventure, and the other located in Wannsee for a nature adventure. We also provide a river boat experience, exclusive to our guests, where our travelers are not only transported from one location to the next, but can also enjoy all the magical sights along the Spree during the transition.

KREUZBERG BASECAMP We propose to take over the first four floors of an existing bulding in Kreuzberg, with a view overlooking a canal.

INTERIOR ZONE MAP Our form language is inspired by Berlin’s neighborhoods arranged into zones, as well as the rivers that naturally flow throughout the landscape. Ceilings are dropped or floors are raised to distinguish zones. The first floor is the communal lobby space. Each zone serves a specific function that relates to our traveler’s needs. Our bedrooms occupy the second and third floors.

KREUZBERG PORT Our Transport boat service is conveniently docked across the canal, right by our basecamp.

THE TRANSPORT We offer our boat service exclusively to hotel guests. In about three to four hours, our guests are transported from one basecamp to the other, while seeing historical gems on the Spree.

BECOME IMMERSED IN HISTORY

FROM A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW

WANNSEE PORT Our boat arrives at the marina, and guests make their way down the boardwalk, to the front entrance of our second Transport basecamp.

WANNSEE BASECAMP We propose to take over an existing building that overlooks the marina. Our Wannsee basecamp is an escape from the city life. A special feature is our utilities provided for both winter and summer recreation.

INTERIOR ZONE MAP Just like the Kreuzberg basecamp, our interior layout is divided into zones. Although the zones function in the same way, the traveler will be experiencing it in the forest, a much different environment.

REMEMBER ADVENTURE SCENT is closely associated to memory, so we propose to create a line of scent collectibles. Each scent represents a zone so that our guests can remember their adventures in the city, the river, and the outskirts.

THREE ZONES For packaging and other collateral, we developed unique TEXTILE PATTERNS for each of the three zones.

! “ACTUALLY, THAT BOAT RIDE IS QUITE BORING— IN MY HONEST OPINION.” DURING MIDTERM PRESENTATION, WE RECIEVED FEEDBACK FROM GUESTS AT THE BIKINI BERLIN STUDIO, WHO EXPRESSED THE POTENTIAL OF OUR CONCEPT TO STRETCH MUCH FURTHER.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD While re-evaluating the midterm concept, we felt that AN EXPANSIVE NETWORK was more necessary than just a hotel in two locations. Transport is instead a platform to connect with locals all around Berlin. To get our travelers in touch, we filter and curate the best attractions. We took a look at existing popular Berlin travel blogs to consider how to take adventure planning to the next level.

HOW CAN WE CREATE A WAY FOR THE EXPLORER TO EXPERIENCE BERLIN’S UNIQUE DIVERSITY?

HOSPITALITY FOR THE URBAN EXPLORER

TRANSPORT

TRANSPORT TRANSPORT IS NOT JUST A HOTEL. IT IS A PLATFORM THAT ENABLES YOU TO CREATE YOUR OWN BERLIN ADVENTURE.

TRANSPORT WE EQUIP TRAVELERS WITH THE TOOLS AND INFORMATION THEY NEED TO TRULY DISCOVER BERLIN, BY CONNECTING THEM TO A NETWORK OF LOCAL EXPERTS.

UNDERSTANDING THE SYSTEM TRANSPORT REIMAGINES HOW THE ANTI-TOURIST TRAVELS

THE MODEL WE DESIGNED IS MADE UP OF TWO PARTS—THE NETWORK (TRANSITIONS) AND BASECAMP (THE PORT)

BASECAMP

BASECAMP IS ESSENTIAL – EVEN THE MOST ADVENTUROUS TRAVELERS NEED A SAFE AND CONVENIENT PLACE TO CALL HOME. BASECAMP IS EQUIPPED WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO DECOMPRESS AND REBOOT DURING YOUR JOURNEY.

ALL ABOUT GETTING CONNECTED TO LOCALS

HAVING AN AUTHENTIC BERLIN EXPERIENCE MEANS BEING ENGAGED WITH THE PEOPLE AND BUSINESSES WHO MAKE UP THE CITY. TRANSPORT HAS CURATED THE BEST OF BERLIN BRANDS, SO THAT YOU CAN JOIN THE COMMUNITY AND STOCK UP ON WHAT YOU NEED — WHETHER IT’S A TOOL FOR YOUR JOURNEY OR A MEMORY TO TAKE HOME.

!

A LIVE FEED OF TRANSPORT The first point in contact with Transport is our website, where users get a real time feed of Berlin at any given time of day.

GETTING STARTED This is also where users can learn about our philosophy and book a room at Basecamp.

BASECAMP: KREUZBERG Paul-Lincke-Ufer 42, 10999 Berlin Basecamp is located in Kreuzberg, just off the canal. Kreuzberg is a kiez particularly special to Berliners. It is a neighborhood built on diversity, community, and its rebellious character, making it the ideal place for the Urban Explorer.

A WALK THROUGH BASECAMPÂŹ

BOOT UP FLOOR 1

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

ENTERING THE SPACE Our explorers begin their journey at basecamp by walking through the ground floor tunnel and taking the elevator up to the first floor.

TRANSPORT BIKE WALL

MOBILITY + NAVIGATION The elevator opens up and the first thing guests see upon arriving is our wall of bikes and map of Berlin, reinforcing mobility and navigation, two ideas essential to the brand.

CHECK IN + RETAIL ZONE

MAKE YOURSELF COMFORTABLE To the right, our guest is greeted by a host in our reception zone. This area doubles as our retail zone, featuring Berlin based products. You’ll notice our signature Transport cubbies, a reminder that here, there’s a place for everything.

GEAR UP ZONE

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED Our gear up zone is where guests find anything they could possibly need for their day out. So whether you’re hiking in Grunewald or rollerblading at sunset at Tempelhof, we’ve got you covered.

TRANSPORT LOUNGE AREA

BOOT UP! Here, we’ve taken bicycle wheels and stacked planks of wood to create a unique platform seating area that faces our information exchange wall, making it the perfect place to sit and plan out your day.

INFORMATION EXCHANGE WALL

CONSTRUCT YOUR ADVENTURE Our information exchange wall is a multi-digital platform that provides the information you would need to plan your day: a live weather feed, projected featured events, what is trending online, and even when the next bus is coming.

CHOOSE YOUR TRANSPORT

WE’LL HELP FIND THE WAY With our info exchange wall, you are also able to choose an adventure by method of transportation. Enter the coordinate code, and we’ll help you find the route to get there.

TRAVEL ANALOG

PRINT OUT A JOURNEY CARD All this information can be sent to your mobile device, or if you’d rather travel analog, print our a journey card and go.

GRAB A BITE TO EAT

PREPARE FOR YOUR DAY OUT Travelers can enjoy a traditional German breakfast breakfast in the morning or pack food to-go so that they can equip for the day out in the city.

SOAK UP FLOOR 2

SOAK UP

UNDERSTAND PAST + PRESENT Our soak up zone is where travelers can take a deeper contextual understanding of the city through a large collection of books, maps, artifacts, and more.

A DEEPER DIVE INTO HISTORY

HAVE A SEAT Choose the way you want to soak up – we offer floor seating for a laid back experience or table seating for spreading out.

A TACTILE WAY TO DISCOVER

A PLACE FULL OF INFORMATION There are endless ways to discover within the library–books, shelves, drawers. The soak up zone is an analog and physical source of information, in contrast to the digital information downstairs in the BOOT UP zone.

EXCHANGE FLOOR 3

THE TRANSPORT BIERGARTEN

CONGREGATE OVER DRINKS Our decompress zone is inspired by biergartens, a popular place to meet with friends and engage over drinks. This is a place for explorers to link before or after their adventure out.

TAP YOUR OWN BEER

EXPERIENCE LOCAL FLAVOR We’ve paired up with a local brewery to bring a taste of local flavor to basecamp. We offer four craft beers, and guests are able to tap their own beers as they please.

DECOMPRESS FLOOR 4

THE TRANSPORT LIVING ROOM

A PLACE FOR THE END OF THE DAY Our fourth floor is essentially the hotel living room, where guests gather at the end of the day to decompress with a glass of wine or some kaffee and kuchen.

BY THE FIRESIDE

GATHER AROUND AND FEEL AT HOME A feature in this zone is our central campfire. There’s plenty of blankets and pillows, so grab some drinks and just sit back and relax with some good company.

DECOMPRESS FLOOR 5

THE TRANSPORT GALLERY

ENJOY THE VIEW FROM UPSTAIRS Our living room opens up to the fifth floor. Guests can engage in conversation around the balcony overlooking the fireplace, as well as our gallery—a collection of special memories of the Transport family.

GUEST ROOM PORCHES

SHARE YOUR TRAVELS + INSPIRE OTHERS Each guest room has a front porch that comes with their own digital galleries they have the opportunity to curate. This encourages community interaction and allows travelers to exchange stories of their travels while in Berlin.

BEDROOMS FLOORS 2–5

SHARED BEDROOMS

MEET LIKE-MINDED EXPLORERS Transport has two types of bedrooms: shared and singles. Our shared bedrooms offer a rare opportunity to connect with other travelers who come from all around the world.

SHARED BATHROOMS

WASH UP AND REJUVENATE Our shared bedrooms also come with shared bathrooms, equipped with amenities and other essentials.

SINGLE BEDROOMS

REBOOT FOR TOMORROW’S ADVENTURE Single bedrooms are for guests who prefer a more private, quieter experience. We’ve kept things down to the essentials and focus on comfort, quality, and functionality. We encourage guests to take full use of our storage and display cubbies.

BE A PART OF OUR NETWORK

LEVELS OF ENGAGEMENT Explorers who become part of our network have three ways of engaging with the city. Transport CERTIFIED, COLLABS, AND POP-UPS.

OUR APP IS A TOOL Transport provides a tool exclusive to explorers who utilize our Basecamp service. Guests can

A DAY IN THE LIFE To illustrate how the app integrates into the system, we’d like to introduce you to urban explorers, Hillary and Marco, who are staying with Transport during their time here in Berlin. Hillary and Marco wake up and make their way down to the BOOT UP ZONE, located on the first floor. They notice on our INFORMATION EXCHANGE WALL that the weather will be sunny and beautiful, so they decide that they want to embark on an ACTIVE ADVENTURE. On the following days, they opt for other various adventures.

TRANSPORT JOURNAL At Basecamp, our bedroom porches allow our travelers to have the opportunity to curate their own photo galleries to share with other guests. Our Transport journal serves as the analog copy of those personal galleries. After returning home, our guests recieve a beautifully bound, physical record of their time with Transport.

WE ARE THE NEW MODEL FOR HOW THE ANTITOURIST TRAVELS

EXPANDING FUTURE We see Transport as the new model for how the anti-tourist travels. For this reason, we see this way of venturing starting in Berlin, but expanding to other cities worldwide. Transport selects destinations with unique stories waiting to be discovered by our Urban Explorers.

TRANSPORT IS BOTH THE TRANSITION AND THE PORT FOR THE URBAN EXPLORER.
