G R E AT N E W S , C U LT U R E V U LT U R E S When it comes to culture, Stoke-on-Trent is up there with the best. It’s a city steeped in history, and recently we’ve seen a resurgence in everything that makes it great.

For starters, it’s the World Capital of Ceramics. Our Pottery Museums and ceramic festivals are worldrenowned, we’re even home to Wedgwood. It doesn’t stop there, the city is bursting with cultural events throughout the year like theatre, street art, drama, opera, big touring productions, and festivals of all shapes and sizes. We’ve hosted big bands, debuted up-and-coming artists, ran exhibits, showcased new talent, and sponsored world-class sporting events for our own Championship football team, Stoke City FC. We invented oatcakes too, mic drop.

09 D O N ’ T J U S T TA K E O U R W O R D F O R I T, H E A R I T FROM OUR STUDENTS.

LANA SAYS...

Stoke is my hometown, I love it, so I stayed here to study. The great transport links mean you’re never too far away from big companies. I love that you can walk down the street and people smile back, it feels like one big community. Oh, and the oatcakes.

JESS SAYS...

You can tell a lot about a place from the people, and from the second I stepped into Stoke I knew it was for me. Everyone’s so friendly and willing to help, you instantly feel part of the community. I came here not knowing anybody, and I’ve left having made friends for life.

NICHOLAS SAYS...

There’s a reason they were shortlisted for City of Culture. Whether you want to take in the scenery of Trentham Gardens, shop for hours, get cultured at the Regent Theatre, or go exploring, Stoke-on-Trent really does have something for everyone.

LAURA SAYS...

Stoke is the backdrop for all my favourite university memories. There’s nothing I love more than heading into Hanley, gathering supplies and going for an adventure with some mates. Festivals, Stoke FC, nights out, and unplanned days out are just a few things that have played a massive part in my university experience.

11 PAT H W AY COURSES Staffordshire University is introducing a brand-new way to complete your degree: using pathways. WHAT IS A PATHWAY? A pathway is an alternative route you can take in the second year of your full-time undergraduate degree. It will tailor the modules you take in years 2 and 3 to focus on an area within the course that you are passionate about, or you want to base your future career around.

HOW WILL CHOOSING A PATHWAY BENEFIT YOU? Pathways provide you to gain subject specialism skills and capabilities that will be sought by future employers. You will therefore gain recognition of the expertise you have developed on your pathway course on your degree certificate.

DO YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE A PATHWAY? No. The first year of your course will typically cover a broad spectrum of knowledge, covering all of the subjects you can specialise in. If you’re unsure what specialist pathway you want to go into, or you want to continue studying the course in a broad sense, you can choose not to study a pathway and graduate with your initial degree choice.

AN EXAMPLE OF A PATHWAY COURSE

BSc (Hons) Biological Science YEAR 1 In year 1 you will study the broad, fundamental principles of biological science.

YEAR 2 Choose to specialise in one of four pathways, which will focus your module choices around the the following subjects: • Ecology and Environmental Management • Genomics • Pharmacology • Pre-Med If you aren’t interested in focusing on any of the pathways, remain on your original path and continue to study a broad range of biological science topics.

YEAR 3 Continue on your path and complete your studies. Depending on the pathway you have chosen you will end up with one of the following degrees: • BSc (Hons) Biological Science • BSc (Hons) Biological Science (Ecology and Environmental Management) • BSc (Hons) Biological Science (Genomics) • BSc (Hons) Biological Science (Pharmacology) • BSc (Hons) Biological Science (Pre-Med)

I M P O R TA N T I N F O R M AT I O N At Staffordshire University, we produce our guides well ahead of the academic years to which they relate. Although mistakes can happen, we try to ensure that the content of our guides is as accurate as possible. At the time of printing, the courses listed in this guides represent those we intend to offer for the 2020 academic year. Very occasionally, however, we need to make changes to our courses, including their content and the way in which they are delivered. In some instances, courses can be discontinued or combined with other courses. Reasons for withdrawing courses can include insufficient student numbers and courses not receiving the necessary accreditation or approval. Changes to course information may include operational and academic reasons. If circumstances beyond our control mean we cannot provide particular educational services, all reasonable steps will be taken to minimise any disruption to those services. However, the University will have no liability for any loss or damage suffered by any prospect or student as a result.

As a prospective student of Staffordshire University, it’s your responsibility to ensure you have fully reviewed up-to-date course information before you apply, and that your chosen course fully meets your requirements. You should also check the course still meets your requirements before accepting an offer to study with us. If we discontinue a course or programme and you’re not happy with the alternative offered, or if a programme is changed and you’re not happy with the changes, you’ll be given the opportunity to withdraw from the programme. Up-to-date course information can be found on our website (www.staffs.ac.uk), or by calling us on 01782 294000. If you’re offered a place at Staffordshire University, your offer will be subject to our rules, regulations and enrolment conditions, which may vary from time to time (www.staffs.ac.uk/ rulesandregs). If you become a student of Staffordshire University, you will enter a contract with us and be bound by our rules and regulations. These, too, may vary from time to time (www.staffs.ac.uk/rulesandregs).
