Celebrating Staff Success
Welcome to Celebrating Staff Success 2020 Now in their thirteenth year, Staffordshire University’s Celebrating Staff Success Awards represent one of the most important events of the season, recognising the outstanding contributions that our colleagues make to our students, local communities and the wider region we serve. This has been a year like no other. You have all gone ‘above and beyond’ to deliver an excellent student experience amidst a global pandemic, adapting to new ways of working whilst juggling your existing responsibilities and – in many cases – increased family commitments. What I have found truly inspirational is the sheer number of you who have also found time to help out in your communities – or in your fields of academic expertise – giving up your valuable time to contribute to the fight against COVID-19. All the while competition within the higher education sector has continued to increase, compounded by uncertainty on both the national and global stage. That we have succeeded in building on the progress made during recent years is testament to the passion and determination of our brilliant and friendly workforce. The valuable contributions you make on a daily basis are fundamental in ensuring the success of our current and future students. Our Connected University is fortunate to have a wealth of talented people who give their best – day in, day out – to ensure that we make a tangible difference to quality of life in Staffordshire and beyond. I continue to learn from your knowledge, skills and professionalism, and I consider it a privilege to work with such a dedicated team. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of you for the exceptional commitment you have demonstrated this year. You really have gone the extra mile to connect with our students and each other during what has been an immensely challenging period. The work you have been doing – both within our University and surrounding communities – epitomises our values. It is because of your efforts I am proud to be Staffs. Today we recognise and reward all your hard work. I hope you enjoy the afternoon. Best wishes,
Professor Liz Barnes CBE DL Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive

Through their research and scholarship, external engagement and teaching, Associate Professors contribute to the advancement of the University’s reputation. The criteria for the appointment of Associate Professor is the same as the criteria followed for full Professors, but the applicants for an Associate Professor will need to demonstrate significant achievement in two of the three conferment criteria.

Higher Education Academy Fellowships The University has made a commitment that all teaching staff will achieve a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. This will ensure that these staff are being developed in line with national standards and will impact positively on the student experience. To this end, the University has introduced a ‘Routes to Fellowship’ scheme. Working in partnership with the HE Academy, this allows teaching staff to build a portfolio of evidence of their ongoing practice and development, culminating in the achievement of either an Associate Fellow, Fellow or Senior Fellow.

Connecting Colleagues
It has been an exceptional year so far, with our usual cycle of events either being adapted or postponed to suit our post COVID-19 climate. Despite the many challenges, it has been fantastic to see so many people documenting their experiences of lockdown life, sharing tips for successful homeworking and generally supporting each other during the transition to blended working via the Staff App. Following last year’s event, there were some great images and updates shared by our staff before we were forced into lockdown, including an eclectic array of selfies and team photos celebrating events such as Halloween and Christmas, and documenting ‘normal’ life on campus. A particular highlight from the beginning of March 2020 was the last group activity on campus – the Row Britannia Challenge. This saw our staff and students row a mile for mental health as part of the Start to Success launch on University Mental Health Day, raising vital funds for the University’s corporate charity North Staffs Mind and the Horizon Fund.
By the end of March, colleagues had already adapted to our ‘new normal’, by participating in virtual activities such as the Wear a Hat Day for Brain Tumour Research. Social events also moved online, with some colleagues participating in their own activities such as the Virtual Saturday Kitchen, sharing recipes while raising spirits. By July, some of our teams had started preparing for our return to campus and were reassuring us all by sharing important updates while setting up our covid-secure campus. This enabled important recruitment activity to go ahead, with our Clearing Hub opening as usual in August, albeit in strange circumstances. In September, the University officially launched the new Blended Working Framework, and while national guidelines determine that we cannot yet get together to celebrate our achievements at a physical event, we hope you will continue to connect online and share your news, events and updates regularly on the Staff App.

Connected University
Roll of Honour 2020 Shortlisted
Prestigious appointments
We’re delighted to be shortlisted in four categories at the Times Higher Education Awards 2020, most notably in the ‘University of the Year category’. We’re also shortlisted for ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community’ [Nic Gratton and Get Talking] ‘Outstanding Marketing and Communications Team’ [Clearing campaign 2019] and ‘Outstanding Technician of the Year’ [Matt Lewis]. The event takes place virtually on November 26 this year giving more of our University community the chance to engage with this online event. C’mon Staffs!!
Our Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Liz Barnes CBE and Associate Professor of Policing Jane Sawyers have both been made Deputy Lieutenants of Staffordshire. The new Deputy Lieutenants were appointed to the role by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Mr Ian James Dudson CBE KStJ in August. Mr Dudson is the Queen’s representative in the County and Liz and Jane will support him in carrying out the duties throughout the year. Take a bow!
Andrew Proctor, Pro Vice Chancellor for Digital, has achieved the digital double this year having been shortlisted in two Digital Leader categories. Andrew has been shortlisted in both DL100 and Digital Technology Leaders Awards – the winners of which are announced this month. Further our reputation as the Digital University, our student app has been nominated in the Breakthrough of the Year category at the Falling Walls Remote World Science Summit event which takes place in November.
Winners Earlier this year Staffordshire University was named Midlands University of the Year at the annual Midlands Business Awards. Commenting on the win, ViceChancellor Liz Barnes CBE DL said “Being recognised as winner of Midlands University of the Year is testament to the hard work of our staff and our talented students who graduate with the skills that enable businesses in our region to grow and prosper.” Organiser Harjinder Singh Sandher, said: “We’re delighted to see Staffordshire University pick up this award. Its achievements show that the higher education sector will have a vital role in equipping the UK for the challenges of the future.” Staffordshire University has also scooped the Higher Education Institution category at the Grads In Games Awards 2020. Our University was recognised for its “long history of developing fantastic graduates who enter the games industry” together with impressive employability statistics and industry links. Congratulations to an outstanding team!

New investment Staffordshire University plans to transform the health workforce using advanced digital technology has won the backing of government. We have recently secured funding from the government’s Getting Building programme for our £5.8 million Health Innovation Centre at the University’s Stafford Centre of Excellence for Healthcare Education. The project will see the development of a new sectorleading clinical simulation and immersion suites enabling healthcare professionals and students to explore and develop new patient safety techniques. The facility will also enable the teaching of advanced digital skills to support the future needs of our health sector. Pro Vice-Chancellor (Digital), Andrew Proctor said: “By providing existing and future healthcare professionals with the cutting-edge digital skills and advanced techniques in high-demand within the healthcare sector, we will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the NHS, playing a key role in the transformation and modernisation of the workforce.”
Civic University
League Tables
Earlier this year we announced a new scheme to recognise members of the public who work with the University to make a difference in their communities.
We have maintained our position in the top 250 Young University Rankings compiled by the Times Higher Education. While our overall rankings have been impacted by new Graduate Outcomes data, we can be particularly proud of our performance in a number of areas, not least in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide’s Social Inclusion Rankings where we are up 20 places to 13. This takes into account that we have the second highest percentage of students from disadvantaged areas. The University is also 15th for ‘teaching quality’ out of 131 higher education institutions – further confirmation of TEF Gold!
Six people were selected to receive the University’s newest honour – Civic Fellowships – which recognises both the contribution they make and their status as a member of Staffordshire University’s Connected community.
In the Guardian League Tables published in September we boast a number of top 20 subject areas as follows; social policy and administration 4th; fashion (including surface pattern and textiles) 5th, education 15th , nursing and midwifery 15th, accounting and finance 16th; film and photography 16th.
Charitable giving Staffordshire University has teamed up with North Staffs Mind to promote and protect mental health, wellbeing and achievement among students and across local communities.
The first recipients of the University’s Civic Fellowships are: Tim Bailey; a Prison Officer at HMP/YOI Drake Hall who is a key partner and external advisor to the BA(Hons) Criminal Justice with Offender Management programme; Romy Cheeseman; Honorary Archivist for the Victoria Theatre Collection (VTC) which is a major feature of Staffordshire University’s Special Collections. Teri Elder, Chloe Harris; Jennifer Spice and Monienne Stone were recognised for their outstanding work as community researchers on the Get Talking Hardship project. The new Civic Fellowships are awarded for an initial period of two years on the understanding that recipients will work with Staffordshire University in an ambassadorial capacity and with staff to deliver shared outputs.
The University used Mental Health Awareness week to announce an ambitious fundraising target to be shared between Staffordshire University’s Horizon Fund and North Staffs Mind. Vice-Chancellor Professor Liz Barnes CBE DL, said: “We aim to raise £10,000 for North Staffs Mind and the Horizon Fund, supporting both charities during 2020 and 2021.We are living through unprecedented times and, although the challenges we face can sometimes feel overwhelming, we can help overcome any obstacle if we support each other.” If you’d like to get involved, please email developmentoffice@staffs.ac.uk If you’d like to donate to our joint charities initiative, please visit staffs.ac.uk/donate
