JIA YING GNOH

India MSc Electrical Engineering

France BSc (Hons) Film Production Technology

Malaysia BA (Hons) Graphic Design

“The electrical and electronic engineering department at Staffordshire University is ranked high among the UK universities and was one of the reasons I chose to study here. The course content and modules were very much industry orientated and well structured. I have now secured a graduate engineering role with WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff in Edinburgh.”

“The University facilities gave me the tools I needed to practise shooting, and the projects we did also helped me have a showreel to present at interviews. One of my favourite memories of Staffordshire University was winning two national television awards.”

“I graduated from Staffordshire with great employability skills and an excellent portfolio – something that’s essential in graphic design. I worked to real challenges and live briefs, developed great communication and presentation skills and won the London-based brand agency Coley Porter Bell Shine Award. This meant a £3,000 cash prize and a three month work placement. I now work for Coley Porter Bell full-time as a graphic designer. It’s proper work, with real commercial value, for global brand owners like Unilever and Nestlé.”

Sophie now works in the BBC’s Elstree Studios.

“I’m now working at CISCO systems in London as an Executive Briefing Specialist – I have a massive passion for technology! During my degree, I did a summer internship at CISCO which meant I got to work on the 2012 Olympics in London. My lecturers at Staffordshire were so supportive, the campus is peaceful so you can really focus on your studies but there’s plenty to do – one of my highlights at Staffordshire was organising the Diversity Fashion Show and I was a member of the Women’s Basketball Society.”

“My goal is to be a world famous designer-maker. My influence and inspiration comes from a rich cultural background in Japan. I am proud to be Japanese; my work reflects my country, identity and culture. My passion for industrial ceramic design brought me to the UK. I researched many universities about studying ceramics and found out only Staffordshire University’s MA Ceramic Design course specialised in industrial ceramic design – that’s why I chose it.” Yuka recently took a paid internship at Royal Crown Derby, a manufacturer of high quality fine bone china.

RESEARCH

Staffordshire University isn’t simply at the heart of the UK. It is also at the centre of some of the outstanding applied research that takes place in Britain – research that makes a difference to lives around the world. Carried out by leading academics, our research activities include economic, environmental, cultural, technological, scientific, health-based and social development programmes. As a measure of the quality of our research, 78% was rated as ‘world leading’ or of ‘international importance’ in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Take a look at just a few of our research initiatives: Protecting the feet of diabetics Led by our Professor of Clinical Biomechanics, we are developing innovative ways of protecting the feet of people with diabetes. Complications arising from diabetes result in more than one million foot or lower limb amputations each year. As many of these amputations could be avoided by wearing specially designed footwear, we are heading up an international project to develop insoles and, ultimately, footwear that will protect the feet of patients and

prevent the ulceration that leads to amputations. Helping keep society safe Video monitoring is vital to society. It keeps motorways moving, provides evidence in police investigations and can help prevent crime. Taking the advantages of CCTV one stage further, a system developed by Staffordshire University is able to track objects, analyse them and even report anything suspicious. Built using a sophisticated model that can replicate the capabilities of the human eye, the system is already proving valuable in law enforcement. Developing sustainable energy We don’t simply work hard to ensure we are an environmentally friendly university. We are also working to help the UK meet its renewable energy targets. One energy source that shows great potential is biomass – organic material that can be used as fuel. From our on-campus

European Centre of Excellence for Biomass, we led on a £6 million research project to advance biomass technology. Along with partners from across Europe, our aim is to accelerate the use and development of biomass as a sustainable source of energy. Combating stress in sport The difference between winning and losing in sport can often come down to how athletes cope with psychological stress. Our researchers have developed a groundbreaking method to help athletes react positively to the pressures of competition. Our approach, which turns stress into a positive, has been successfully applied to elite sports including professional football and cricket, and is also being used by a growing number of multinational organisations. Our researchers also worked with Team GB in the run-up to the 2016 Olympics.

Business MPhil/PhD Business & Management MPhil/PhD Business & Management MPhil/PhD (Blended Learning) DURATION: 18–72 MONTHS, DEPENDING ON MODE OF STUDY FULL-TIME RESEARCH AND DOCTORAL STUDIES Course outline: We offer MPhil and PhD courses in Business and Management and Economics. We currently have around 40 students who study full-time, part-time or by blended learning. These students share and contribute to a vibrant research community that operates at the cutting edge of knowledge. There are Open Society Foundation Scholarships available on this course for qualifying students. The regulations at Staffordshire University award a PhD to candidates who have ‘critically investigated an approved topic resulting in an independent and original contribution to knowledge and demonstrated an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field, (and) presented and defended a thesis by oral examination…to the satisfaction of examiners.’ In your application, we’ll want to know the area of academic knowledge you want to place your PhD study and will assess whether we can provide supervisors who have the knowledge of your academic area. In order to succeed,

you’ll need to demonstrate capability in using research methods – we insist that all research students enrol on a University-wide research method course. Routes: • MPhil/PhD is the most common route for Economics and Business and Management students. The MPhil stage usually includes a critical review of existing academic literature on the subject and often a pilot research study. This can then be written up (30,000 words) and successful students are awarded an MPhil. Alternatively, if you decide to progress to the PhD you can do so by a short report (5,000 words) that acts as a summary of the work done so far and a plan for the PhD itself. • Direct PhD is more suitable if you already have a Masters degree in your intended area. For example, an MSc in Economics for a PhD in Economics. MBAs and other generalist business Masters qualifications do not fall into this category – so you’ll need to take another route (e.g. MPhil/PhD) if this applies to you.
