TEACHING AND LEARNING Your first challenge on this course is to forget everything you’ve been taught at school and start to learn about an incredibly diverse area of creative design. This is the ultimate learning experience as everything is aimed at getting you to produce work and helping you to get it out there in the wider world. As a cartoonist and comic artist you will need to be aware of graphic design, illustration and animation. You must have a passion for research, breaking down information and telling stories. No other art and design course will challenge you and your perceptions of art and how it visually communicates with an audience. On this course you will be expected to regularly attend conventions, locally, nationally and internationally. You must be able to work to deadlines, to network with your peers and contemporaries and be prepared to work harder than you have ever worked before. Your mantra should be draw, draw and draw again. You must be prepared to make mistakes and learn from them.

The University offers a completely unique way of learning, with life drawing both in and out of class. You will be expected to carry a sketch book around with you at all times and visually collect what you see and your ideas. We bring in a range of specialist lecturers who feed energetically into the course structure. These are industry professionals who have lived and worked in the wider world. They will challenge your preconceptions about the industry and where you can find employment within it. At the end of 3 years, you would have undergone an extensive learning period in design, drawing, writing and producing comics. You will have had your work printed, experienced advertising it, attended conventions and sold it, as both part of a team and as an individual. You will have first-hand experience if your work sells. You will have looked at marketing your product, getting yourself out into the big world and probably learnt more about yourself than you would have thought possible.

OUR BRILLIANT PEOPLE
“I have wanted a career in animation since I was at secondary school, and when I reached University I knew I was in the right place to achieve this ambition. Throughout the Animation course, I’ve had the opportunity to sample many areas of filmmaking and animation techniques, and have decided to focus on 3D character animation. While at Staffordshire University, I have had the opportunity to do a number of superb things – from attending animation festivals, to being a Zombie for the day, and representing the University in Brussels at the 5th University Business Forum hosted by the EU. During my second year, I was awarded the ‘25fps@ staffs Fellowship Award’ as well as the Faculty of Arts & Creative Technologies ‘Trustees Prize’. I am also an active member of BITES – Animation & Film Society and the Rock Climbing Society. But, the most exciting for me has been meeting some amazing industry professionals – including Simon Tofield (creator of Simons Cat), Oscar-nominated/award winning directors Sam Fell (ParaNorman), Rich Moore (WreckIt Ralph), Dan Scanlon (Monsters University) and Mark Andrews (Brave). I have also had the opportunity to work with local animation companies - starting as an intern and now on a part-time basis, employed as a Rigging TD.
…SAVOUR YOUR TIME IN THIS GREAT INSTITUTION!
The Animation course at Staffordshire is a truly special place for those who want to achieve. The staff and fellow students are all wanting for your success. You must seize every chance and take every open door. It is so rewarding to be able to look back and see what I’ve achieved in such a small space of time. Graduation will come around all too fast so savour your time in this great institution!” Jamie Bowen BA (Hons) Animation

...THERE’S A LOT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS DEGREE – EVERYTHING FROM FILM STORYBOARDING TO GAMES DESIGN.
There are few university courses that have their own superhero for a mascot. But Captain Staffs, pictured with Jack Baker, makes a perfect emblem for our Cartoon and Comic Arts degree. For Jack, deciding to apply for the course was a no brainer. “I’ve always loved comics,” he says. “I didn’t think there was anywhere that did a comics degree. In the past, you’ve always had to go into illustration, graphics or animation to get somewhere in the field. And it’s really something to be part of a totally new course, with nothing else in the country like it.” The style of tuition on the course is very hands-on, with most work taking place in the studio. There’s also plenty of opportunity for students to gain advice from guest lecturers – professional artists at the top of their field. “That’s been a highlight,” says Jack. “They’ve included people who have worked for Panini and Marvel Comics, and they’ve given us some valuable insights into the craft and the industry.”
Discover more: www.staffs.ac.uk/undergraduate
A great part of the degree’s attraction is the chance to work with other students who are just as fanatical about comics. Comments Jack: “When I was at school and college, there wasn’t anyone else interested in drawing comics, so no one could give me good feedback or a genuine critique. Here, we are always asking each other’s opinions and working together. We’ve done a few group comics, including a 24-hour comic marathon. That was fun, but exhausting!” With an increasing demand for cartoon art in print, on screen and online, the employment prospects for Jack and his group are better than ever. His own plans are open-ended. “Ideally, I’d like to go into inking, preferably for an organisation like Marvel or DC. But there’s a lot you can do with this degree – everything from film storyboarding to games design.” Jack Baker BA (Hons) Cartoon and Comic Arts

A BETTER CAMPUS
AT STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, WE’RE COMMITTED TO INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE – LITERALLY. OVER A PERIOD OF 18 MONTHS, WE’RE SPENDING MILLIONS OF POUNDS ON OUR UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES, SO WHEN YOU JOIN US, YOU’LL BE COMING TO A PLACE WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START OPENING DOORS AND BREAKING BOUNDARIES.
In recent years, our Stoke-on-Trent campus has undergone a massive transformation, with the students at the heart of our plans. From the amazing Science Centre to environmental improvements, we’re focused on building the best campus for our students. But whilst it’s all well and good a university saying they care what students think, we’re putting our money where our mouth is. This all stems from a decision to make Stoke-on-Trent the main campus of Staffordshire University. In 2016 the majority of students from our Stafford Computing and Technology courses will be

moving to the Stoke-on-Trent campus. So we’re making sure that when you arrive, you enter a university that is fit for purpose. One with a great mix of study and social spaces. One that feels safe and thrives on the friendly reputation we’ve built. What we found was that a modern edge-of-city campus is ideal. Close enough to the city for the social life, but far enough away to focus on studying. Great transport links around the city, but also great spaces around the campus. The best of both worlds. So, starting in Summer 2015, we’ll be working on the College Road and Leek Road sites of our Stoke Campus. We’ll be creating great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, venues and teaching rooms. Bringing the best teaching facilities together with fantastic student areas – making it feel safe and easy to jump between your lectures and your life outside University. As well as that, we’re also investing £12m in a new Computing and Games facility. This project, called Digital Kiln, will merge beautiful learning space with state-of-theart technology to support all sorts of courses from Cyber Security to Games Design.
This investment is continuing the work we’ve already started to create great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, halls of residence, and other facilities. We’ve committed to doubling the investment that’s already started to create enhanced facilities. Come 2016, it’s going to have the buzz and the feel of the edge-of-city campus that students want. Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Gunn Healthcare Centres of Excellence This redevelopment work isn’t just happening in Stoke-on-Trent though. Healthcare and Midwifery students won’t miss out with significant further investment in our Centres of Excellence in Stafford and Shrewsbury – adding new student spaces and learning resources to make these campuses totally self-contained and right up to date. So, with all this to come, maybe it’s time you joined us at Staffordshire University?
