BUSINESS

MAKE YOUR MARK IN

BUSINESS Every single day we encounter all kinds of business related issues, from news articles about business itself to choices like ‘where should I buy my lunch?’ But even the most straightforward purchases are often the product of a huge amount of time and effort that a business has invested to make sure you choose them, their product or service and not someone elses. Every single business decision a business makes should lead to success, growth and prosperity; ensure they succeed, grow and prosper - some decisions will be more effective than others. Our diverse courses in Business Management offer you insights into those decison making processes. You’ll learn how businesses are developed, and how owners and managers deal with everyday issues, make decisions and address challenges as they emerge. You’ll look at how

WHY STAFFS? SPECIALISE IN YOUR CHOSEN AREA

THE RIGHT KIND OF DEVELOPMENT

Many of the business courses have a common first year. You can carry on from this with the standard BA (Hons) Business Management course or if you want to specialise you can select International Business Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management, or Enterprise Management. Other options you might wish to consider for your degree are BSc (Hons) Digital Marketing Management or BSc (Hons) Business Economics.

Our courses are developed and taught by Business and Management specialists, including economists, marketers, human resource and purchasing and supply chain professionals. We’ll develop and support you in becoming attractive to employers, and well-rounded individuals.

Many of these you can accelerate into a two year fast-track course, but you can also opt for a different two year course –the HND Business award - which is similar to the first two years of the traditional Business Management degree. Another alternative if you don’t achieve your full potential at ‘A’ or BTEC level is the BA Business Management with a Foundation Year.

6

BEYOND OUR COURSES Outside of the classroom, there are lots of extra-curricular activities for you to get involved in. We encourage independent study and volunteering, as well as attending events such as business seminars hosted by our Research, Business and Employability Services team, so you can grow your network of contacts. Our Stoke-onTrent campus is a great place to study and live. As well as a buzzing atmosphere, it is accessible by bus, train or car and thanks to lots of recent investment, our facilities across the site are top notch.

LEADING INDUSTRY EXPERTS Our teaching team has experience of local, national and international business and consultancy as well as government authorities and the banking industry. We invite business managers and leaders to share their experiences and thoughts on contemporary trends, such as Alistair Campbell (Journalist and broadcaster), Jo Cameron, (former candidate on ‘The Apprentice’), Fraser Doherty (SuperJam), Fiona Cole (Marketing Manager Porsche GB), Bernard Carey (Alumnus of the University) Marlin Consulting, and managers/leaders from other corporations including DFS, the BBC, Birmingham Airport and the Royal Television Society.

STUDENT SUPPORT Because we work with you in small classes or group projects, you’ll receive excellent support and guidance as well as benefitting from contact with visiting lecturers and speakers who are current industry practitioners. This is particularly evident during Global Entrepreneurship Week, when you participate in a range of activities designed to enhance your entrepreneurial ability during which employers and consultants are on hand to offer guidance and support. We often see students on a oneto-one basis throughout the year and we make use of social networking to improve communication.

PLACEMENTS (HOME AND OVERSEAS) You’ll also be encouraged to participate in industry placements. These range from just a few weeks of work experience to a whole academic year. We have students who have spent time studying with our partner organisations across the world, and some take up ERASMUS schemes that include funded placements and work experience across Europe. We’ve got an experienced team to support you in finding the right placement opportunity, and you’ll have a dedicated visit tutor during your stay too.

OUR INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS To improve your understanding of business and management, and to develop wider employability, we have forged links with companies and organisations who run ‘live’ projects with us. Taking part in these challenges will give you a valuable insight into real-life work practices and expectations – and help you to build your network of contacts for the future. Some examples of partners for recent projects include the Chamber of Commerce, FirstGroup, and Katherine House Hospice.

AFTER YOUR DEGREE Our students’ ultimate careers are high priority, and all our awards are designed to be as relevant to current business attitudes as possible, as well as developing you into a highly employable graduate. You’ll be challenged with learning designed to grow a wide skillset and make sure you’re ready to compete in the world of work.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP AND ENCOURAGEMENT, IT’S BEEN REALLY USEFUL AND HELPFUL. THE EXPERIENCE OF STUDYING IN STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY IS THE BEST AND THE MOST IMPORTANT MEMORY IN MY LIFE. Yangyi Wu, BA (Hons) Business Management

Having to carry out market research for an external company was a great way to gain experience in a real life setting as opposed to a hypothetical situation. It meant that the work we were doing was to benefit a real business and having the opportunity to meet the company and present our findings was not only good motivation for completing high quality research, but also allowed us to gain confidence in presenting to an audience. Emma Ordidge BA (Hons) Marketing Management Market Research carried out for First Group

Whilst studying I was working as a Marketing Assistant, at Heywoods Estate Agents and gained some fantastic work experience. I was able to apply what I had learned from several optional modules such as Marketing Metrics and the Small Business Environment which proved most useful! I thoroughly enjoyed taking thought provoking modules such as the Business of Terrorism and War; it was probably my favourite module as it was incredibly interesting and unique. As I graduate from Staffordshire University I was fortunate enough to have career options. I was offered the role of Marketing Manager at my current employment, Heywoods Estate Agents but have chosen to relocate to London to work within the charity sector. A BETTER CAMPUS

AT STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, WE’RE COMMITTED TO INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE – LITERALLY. OVER A PERIOD OF 18 MONTHS, WE’RE SPENDING MILLIONS OF POUNDS ON OUR UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES, SO WHEN YOU JOIN US, YOU’LL BE COMING TO A PLACE WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START OPENING DOORS AND BREAKING BOUNDARIES.

In recent years, our Stoke-on-Trent campus has undergone a massive transformation, with the students at the heart of our plans. From the amazing Science Centre to environmental improvements, we’re focused on building the best campus for our students. But whilst it’s all well and good a university saying they care what students think, we’re putting our money where our mouth is. This all stems from a decision to make Stoke-on-Trent the main campus of Staffordshire University. So we’re making sure that when you arrive, you

enter a university that is fit for purpose. One with a great mix of study and social spaces. One that feels safe and thrives on the friendly reputation we’ve built. What we found was that a modern edge-of-city campus is ideal. Close enough to the city for the social life, but far enough away to focus on studying. Great transport links around the city, but also great spaces around the campus. The best of both worlds. So, starting in Summer 2015, we’ll be working on the College Road and Leek Road sites of our Stoke Campus. We’ll be creating great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, venues and teaching rooms. Bringing the best teaching facilities together with fantastic student areas – making it feel safe and easy to jump between your lectures and your life outside University. As well as that, we’re also investing £12m in a new Computing and Games facility. This project, called Digital Kiln, will merge beautiful learning space with state-of-theart technology to support all sorts of courses from Cyber Security to Games Design.

This investment is continuing the work we’ve already started to create great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, halls of residence, and other facilities. We’ve committed to doubling the investment that’s already started to create enhanced facilities. Come 2016, it’s going to have the buzz and the feel of the edge-of-city campus that students want. Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Gunn

KEY FACTS WORK STARTS: SUMMER 2015

Healthcare Centres of Excellence This redevelopment work isn’t just happening in Stoke-on-Trent though. Healthcare and Midwifery students won’t miss out with significant further investment in our Centres of Excellence in Stafford and Shrewsbury – adding new student spaces and learning resources to make these campuses totally self-contained and right up to date. So, with all this to come, maybe it’s time you joined us at Staffordshire University?
