WED 13 OCT 2021
I am delighted to welcome you all back once again to the King’s Hall in Stoke-on-Trent for an in-person celebration to mark the achievements of our Connected University community. Now in their fourteenth year, Staffordshire University’s Celebrating Staff Success Awards is one of the most important events in the University’s calendar as it is an opportunity to come together to recognise the outstanding contributions our colleagues make to our students, local communities and the wider region we serve. We are fortunate at Staffordshire University to have a wealth of talented people that embrace our values of being ‘ambitious and inspirational, brilliant and friendly, curious and daring, and proud to be Staffs.’ As we emerge from the pandemic we can look back on the last year and be immensely proud of how we weathered an uncertain storm. Our University community came together to look after each other, to ensure our students’ education and welfare was protected, and to help those in the communities where we live and work. It has been a privilege to witness, daily, the valuable contributions made by colleagues to ensure the success of our current and future students. Sadly, this will be my last Celebrating Staff Success welcome as I will be retiring as Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive at the end of this calendar year, December 2021, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your hard work and support. I have been privileged to lead Staffordshire University over the last five years and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together and the difference that we make to our students, alumni, and communities. Our staff remain our greatest asset and there is much to look forward to as our University continues to cement a strong and sustainable position for the future. The work you have been doing – both within our University and surrounding communities – is central to our future success. Today we recognise and reward all your hard work. I wish you a most enjoyable afternoon. Best wishes,
Professor Liz Barnes CBE DL Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive

Professorial Conferments Professors
The award of the title of Professor recognises staff members whose activities have brought prestige to the University through demonstrated quality and impact in their field. The criteria adopted by the University are intended to demand a level of achievement no less than that traditionally expected within British universities, although the nature of the achievement need not be confined to those activities traditionally recognised by a professorial title and will reflect the vision and mission of Staffordshire University. These are the three criteria on which candidates are assessed: • Research and Knowledge Transfer • Teaching Excellence • Academic Leadership and Professional Citizenship
Dr Esther MacCallum-Stewart
Professor of Games Studies School of Digital, Technologies and Arts Esther MacCallum-Stewart researches the impact of games on players, and how they understand these narratives. She has written widely on games, including work that examines roleplaying, boardgames and videogaming. Her work discusses aspects such as representation, player narratives, gender, fun and playfulness in gaming communities. Esther is Chair of the 2024 Worldcon in Glasgow. Worldcon is the longest running science fiction and fantasy convention in the world and host to the prestigious Hugo Awards. She became a Distinguished Scholar of the Digital Games Research Association in 2017 and has served as both Vice President of DiGRA and Chair of the UK Chapter. Much of Esther’s research concerns the intersection of fan and academic communities, and how they can benefit from each other by creating inclusive spaces. She is an advocate for underrepresented voices in these environments.

Associate Professorial Conferments Associate Professors Associate Professors are defined by their growing distinction, standing and leadership in their subject, discipline and/or practice. Through their research and scholarship, external engagement and teaching, Associate Professors contribute to the advancement of the University’s reputation. Mark has published widely on horror cinema. His first book, Nasty Business: The Marketing and Distribution of the Video Nasties, (Edinburgh University Press), considers the moral panic that surrounds the video nasties from an industrial perspective, while his second book, Snuff (Devil’s Advocates/ Liverpool University Press), extends this research to consider the evolution of the myth of the snuff movie. Mark has recently completed work on the edited collection Horror Franchise Cinema (Routledge) and is currently working on a second collection, Screening Controversy (Routledge), and a third monograph (also for Routledge) Big Wednesday: Authorship, Genre and Myth. This book, published next year, explores the mythic persona of the director John Milius and considers how this semi-autobiographical ‘surf movie’ both contributes to and destabilises auteurist myths about the director.

Celebrating Staff Success
As colleagues have now had time to adapt to a blended work-life, we’re delighted to reflect on what has been a fantastic year so far. It is wonderful to see so many people continue to document their experiences on and off campus, and participate in challenges with others on the Staff App. We saw some spook-tacular pumpkin carvings at Halloween, mouth-watering gingerbread houses for Christmas, and plenty of heartfelt peer nominations for our Valentine’s Day #LoveStaffs campaign.
On 9 June, in partnership with Harley Street Medical Centre, we were able to host our first pop-up vaccination centre, offering COVID-19 vaccinations to both staff and students. This is not the only time staff members have helped support others during the pandemic; throughout the year the LRV has been turned into a Swabbing Centre, with colleagues assisting others to receive lateral flow tests. By August, after many successful online Open Days, we invited prospective students on to campus to learn more about their course and surroundings. We’d like to thank all the staff from across the University who volunteered to help by showing how welcoming and vibrant our campus is.
We may not have had our Christmas Carol Service in person this year, but that didn’t stop Mick the Vic and the ResLife team providing fun and laughter to all with a virtual service. As always, the University community continued its charitable work despite the difficulties this year has thrown at us. From the Hubb Foundation Christmas Wishlist Appeal, where 74 gifts were purchased by university staff for those less fortunate, to the Charity Cookbook where our colleague’s lockdown recipes raised over £1000.
Our public lectures have continued to take place online, such as our ‘Inaugural Professorial Lectures’, and on 4 October, we hosted our first ‘Profs in the Pav’ back on campus since the pandemic began.

This year’s sustainable award pieces have been designed and created by More Creative More Creative specialises in the bespoke and unique awards and trophies. We pride ourselves on using the highest quality materials to suit each particular job ensuring that wherever possible our materials are sustainable and ethically sourced. What this means is that we use a lot of reclaimed timber, whether from fallen tree stock or sourcing pieces we can repurpose. We often use glass as a material in our awards as this has a virtually limitless reusability factor, as well as bamboo as it is a very fast growing plant. These products, when used well can give a beautiful finish. We couple these items with acrylics that are recycled where possible, but often are offcuts from the sign industry where they would otherwise be thrown away. We are proud to be able to use our in house design and manufacture teams to combine different materials for a unique finish which suits our clients brief. We have a specialist team which through our individual skill sets, and direct, personal contact with our clients, has a unique ability to provide a tailored solution to any specification. We don’t outsource, which means we retain the control of each project from initial concept to finished product ensuring that the customer gets the service and product they want, and are involved in their project every step of the way.

Vice-Chancellor’s Outstanding Contribution Award The Vice-Chancellor’s Outstanding Contribution Award is a prestigious award category that recognises the extra responsibility and commitment that goes hand-in-hand with higher education. Presented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Liz Barnes CBE DL, this award celebrates as individual or team that lives and breathes the Staffordshire University vales, and has made a fundamental, positive and permanent impression to our ever-growing community of students, staff and external partners.
2020 Winners
Support and Wellbeing Team
Andrea Alker, Lisa Benson, Portia Bentley, Lorraine Berks, Judith Blackband, Elena Bradbury, Heather Brown, Alex Buckley, Anne Burrows, Shelley Burton, Ann Clowes, Paula Dalziel, Neil Ferneyhough, Ann Grainger, Ben Granville, Sharon Hemmings, Joanne Howe, Jo Johnson, Lydia Johnson, Terri Jones, Gemma Kelly, Laura Kendall, David Langley, Michael McMillian, Kim Moody, Lesley Mountford, Ian Munton, Elaine Oldham, Karen Owens, Claire Phillips, Niki Preston, Debi Rix, Victoria Rosie, Sue Steele, Jenny Stephens, Kerry Summerfield, Rachel Thompson, Tracy Walker, Lee Wilkes, Jayne Williams, Reverend Mick Williams, Lynn Wright
“2020 has been an immensely difficult year - a year like no other where a great many of our staff have had to adapt to new ways of working and where they’ve been forced to juggle work and other family commitments. What I find truly inspirational is the number of people who have also found time to help out in their communities or in their fields of academic expertise where they could play a part in the fight against COVID. For that reason, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for their exceptional commitment to connecting with our students and each other over the past six months. I am aware of the great work many of you have been doing – all of which demonstrates the university’s values and make me feel ‘Proud to be Staffs’. For reasons of the pandemic, this award takes on even greater significance in recognising an individual or team who has responded to a challenge or opportunity, and has taken initiative, which positively impacts on our University’s growing reputation. I trust you will all join me in congratulating this year’s deserving winner!”

Roll of Honour Winners Pro Vice-Chancellor (Digital) Andrew Proctor was named Chief Digital Officer of the Year at the Computing Digital Technology Leaders Awards. The awards, which took place virtually, recognised the achievements of the individuals and companies who are really making an impact. Judges described Andrew as “a truly impressive digital leader.” Andrew said: “It’s an honour to be named Chief Digital Officer of the Year and it’s a very encouraging sign that Staffordshire University is making waves on the road to becoming the UK’s foremost digital university.” This CDO of the Year accolade follows Andrew’s success in being included in the Digital Leaders 100 Awards. Staffordshire University won the ‘outstanding Marketing/ Communication team’ at the THE Awards which took place virtually last November. The University was shortlisted in four categories at the Times Higher Education Awards 2020 including the prestigious ‘University of the Year’ title. The prestigious THE award recognised Staffordshire University’s clearing campaign and the judges commented it was “a ‘best in class’ example’. Winning the ‘outstanding Marketing/ Communication team’ title came just one week after the team scooped a silver Heist award for their ‘well executed and well considered” clearing campaign. The University was named ‘Best Educational Institution’ at the prestigious TIGA Games Awards 2020. The annual event hosted by TIGA (The Independent Games Developers’ Association) celebrates the best in creativity, innovation and business in the games industry. Staffordshire University beat eight other shortlisted universities to win the ‘Best Educational Institution’ category. The win Followed an earlier success at the Grads in Games 2020 Awards where Staffordshire University was also named overall winner in the Higher Education Institution category. Staffordshire University has 20 years’ experience of delivering games education and is recognised for its strong focus on developing students’ employability. Unitemps at Staffordshire University has won ‘branch of the year’ title at the Unitemps Awards 2021. Unitemps has developed strong links with businesses across Stoke-onTrent and Staffordshire. The award recognises the work of the Unitemps team during the pandemic when it added virtual internships to its offer to students and graduates and stepped up its activities to help employers find talented candidates for their business. Marek Hornak, Associate Dean for Employer Partnerships and Enterprise, said: “This title is fantastic recognition of these efforts and I am very proud of the team.” The Levelling Up Universities Awards recognise those higher education institutions and their staff that are committed to boosting opportunity and being truly purpose-led. One of two Levelling Up Spotlight Awards was made to Vice-Chancellor Professor Liz Barnes CBE DL for her commitment to, and leadership of, the levelling up agenda within higher education. Staffordshire University was also recognised for ‘closing the

digital divide’ at the Awards which were hosted by former Education Secretary Rt Hon Justine Greening and former Skills and Apprenticeship Minister Rt Hon Anne Milton. The Awards categories are based around the Levelling Up Goals launched earlier this year by Justine Greening.
Recognition Senior lecturer in Biomedical Science Ian Daves has been named among the most influential people in pathology, for a second year running. Ian is one of just 14 UK scientists featured in The Pathologist Magazine’s Power List 2021 which celebrates the inspirational minds that underpin the medical laboratory profession. Ian, who has helped to create the University’s degree apprenticeship in Healthcare Science, was selected for his role in developing innovative training and research opportunities. Following the coronavirus outbreak, Ian helped to develop free online training to support retired scientists returning to the COVID-19 frontline and supported 75 trainee biomedical scientists from the apprenticeship programme to ramp up COVID-19 testing across England. Ian has since helped to design bespoke training for NHS England to support the rapid expansion of its laboratory workforce as part of the pandemic response and the need to sustain COVID-19 testing over a longer term. This year, Ian also joined the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences’ “Scientific Network of Experts,” providing advice and support to organisations such as the World Health Organisation. Staffordshire University has been named among the best universities for teaching quality and job prospects in the StudentCrowd University Awards 2021. The independent awards provide the only rankings for UK universities based 100% on real students’ experiences. Staffordshire University has been revealed as the 14th Best University for Teaching Quality and 17th Best University for Job Prospects. Dr Annabel Kiernan, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, said: “The fact that these awards are based 100% on student reviews makes receiving them all the more special. To know that our students are having a valuable and enriching university experience is all we can ask for and we will continue to develop cutting edge practice in digital learning, teaching and assessment.”
IEZ launched In November 2020, Staffordshire University launched its Innovation Enterprise Zone (IEZ) which aims to kickstart business growth and productivity. The IEZ is one of 20 University Enterprise Zones launched with a £20 million investment by Research England. The investment has funded new incubation space and a hatchery for start-up companies in the Mellor Building on the University’s Stoke-on-Trent campus. It has also funded new Innovation labs, which are equipped with the very latest advanced materials and advanced manufacturing technology, for use by companies wanting to design, prototype
and test new products. The latest addition has been a new Creative Lab, also in Mellor, which opened this semester and is equipped to aid collaboration. Professor Martin Jones said: ”We see this as part of our Civic responsibility. We have an important part to play in creating high-value jobs that our graduates can apply for, to drive innovation and growth in specialist areas and provide SMEs with a vital stepping-stone to succeed. The IEZ is our ecosystem in that it is bringing together the businesses, the technology, research and academic expertise in an environment that allows ideas to flourish and innovation to grow.”
Executive appointments In May, Dr Annabel Kiernan joined the University’s Executive in the newly created role of Pro Vice Chancellor for Education. She previously held the post of Deputy Dean, School of Social Sciences and Acting Head, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Nottingham Trent University. Annabel’s focus is on leading the development of the academic student experience and embedding a culture of focused excellence in curriculum design, teaching and assessment. The COP26 Universities Network aims to improve access to research and academic expertise for world leaders and policy makers ahead of the UN COP26 Climate Summit which is being held in Glasgow this November. Sally McGill, who is the Executive lead for sustainability, said: “Environmental sustainability is a priority at Staffordshire University. We recognise how much it matters – to our students, our staff, our communities and our future. We’re proud to be joining forces with the COP26 Universities Network which is a fantastic opportunity for our academics to help accelerate action. It is only by working together that we can begin to address the threat to our planet and COP26 is a landmark moment in the global fight against climate change.” The move is linked to Staffordshire University’s ongoing efforts to improve sustainability which includes a commitment to reducing its carbon emissions to net zero by 2030. The University is celebrating its entry in a list of universities which measures performance against the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Staffordshire University is one of just 52 UK institutions to participate in this year’s Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021 which measures performance in 17 individual SDGs. The Impact Rankings announcement follows the launch of Staffordshire University’s Social Mobility Pledge which aims to set a new and higher standard on boosting social mobility. Welcoming the Impact Rankings, Professor Liz Barnes CBE DL said: “Our participation in the rankings is just one way of demonstrating that we are committed to the UN’s sustainable development goals, and that we have a responsibility as an anchor institution to think about our social and environmental impacts and how we can best tackle these challenges at a local and global level. This matters to our current and future students, and we are absolutely committed to building a more sustainable University and reducing our environmental impacts at the same time.” Dr Eleanor Atkins, Lecturer in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, has been shortlisted in the prestigious Sustainability Champion category at the Green Gown awards. Since joining the University’s academic team in 2019, Elle has advised the University on its biodiversity and sustainability activities although her influence extends beyond the University to local authorities and Wildlife Trusts. Elle has played a leading role in the Great Green Gathering and Staffs Does Spring Watch which took place at the University during EU green week and she has also encouraged her students to create biodiverse landscapes on the University campus through the Wild Staffs project. Sally McGill, Chief Finance Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said: “Elle is an invaluable member of the University’s Sustainability Task Group and has quickly established herself as a go-to for guidance on areas of sustainability, biodiversity and green infrastructure. She is a sustainability champion and so deserving of this shortlisting.”
