Staffordshire University is committed to ensuring that all students are provided with clear information on the tuition fees they will be charged during the time they study with us. Studying for a Postgraduate degree is a good investment in your future, but you will need to consider carefully how you are going to pay your fees and living costs. This guide breaks down everything that is currently included within tuition fees for full time, on campus Postgraduate students, including PGCE and PGR programmes for 2020/2021. The guide also highlights elements that fall outside of your tuition fees that you will be expected to cover throughout the duration of your course. Please note this guide is for full time, on campus Postgraduate students including PGCE and PGR programmes at Staffordshire University and does not apply to course programmes delivered by partner institutions. For specific course fees, please contact the institution you intend to study with directly.

Taught Postgraduate programmes Fees for Home/EU students are set in bands depending on what facilities and resources are required. For specific fee information, please visit our individual course pages and click on the fees. Fees for part-time students are charged on a pro-rata basis related to the number of credits taken per year.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to respond to a pandemic

PPE (face visors) are provided only in specific teaching and learning spaces where they are needed to achieve physical distancing where it is not otherwise possible

Staffordshire University is following the latest government guidance regarding the use of face coverings on our campuses. Whilst Students will be required to wear face coverings in certain specified areas, coverings will not be mandatory across all areas of our campuses – providing appropriate social distancing can be maintained. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Clothing for laboratory, workshop or art and design studio/ workshop spaces work

PPE (as appropriate) for mandatory placements (e.g. within schools or hospitals) where PPE is a requirement, will be provided by the organisation providing the placement, not the University PPE (single-use masks, gowns, and gloves) for activities taking place within a simulation suite, if required for physical distancing PPE (laboratory coats and goggles) for laboratory work on campus, on a loan basis PPE (goggles, gloves, and ear defenders) for workshop spaces on campus, on a loan basis PPE (goggles and gloves) for art and design studio/workshop spaces on campus, on a loan basis Protective shoes for Paramedic students only

Textbooks and journals

Access to the University Library’s collection of textbooks, digital publications, and other artefacts Textbooks and books listed on reading lists (which can be accessed via the Library)

Printing

NOT INCLUDED IN TUITION FEES Personal copies of text books are not included in our tuition fees. If you wish to have your own indvidual copies of any books, you will need to purchase your own copies. Students can also access books on a short-term loan basis through the University’s Library Services.

Printing of specialist engineering, art and design outputs which are a mandatory part of the course, including comics, up to a value of £50 GradEx posters to a value of £10 per student

Art and other materials and equipment

Access to portable cameras or specialist production equipment for Media Awards

Art materials (including sketchbooks, paint, charcoal, pencils, and clay), props for performance, hire of scripts, costumes, actors’ fees and expenses, AA/AAA batteries for portable media equipment, external equipment hire and other materials

Attending external exhibitions or conferences as a contributor

Where these events are mandatory, as part of the assessment of a module, costs for participation at these events will be included within the tuition fees up to a value of £100 per event

Attendance at events where they are optional is not included Students may apply to the Student Success Fund for potential assistance with costs

Students wishing to present research outputs at a conference, with the prior agreement of their supervisor and Head of Department, will have costs paid up to £100

Attending conferences as a participant

Students may wish to attend conferences (as a participant) run by external organisations. These are not included in the tuition fees

Travel and accommodation costs for placements

The Student Success Fund can also support students where they are eligible.

External accreditations and examinations which are not a mandatory part of the programme Nursing, midwifery, and Operating Department Practitioner students can claim from the NHS Business Services Authority under the NHS Learning Support Fund for travel over and above the miles between home and University, and for any dual accommodation if required. From September 2020 Paramedic students will be included in the allowances as above

Clothing for clinics, practical’s, and placements

Clothing for placements is provided for students working in a healthcare setting which requires an NHS or blue light service uniform, i.e. nurses, midwives, paramedics etc

DBS checks required for specific modules

DBS checks which are mandatory to complete a specific module are included within the tuition fees

For all other students, travel and accommodation costs associated with placements are not included Some social work students receive a bursary with a travel element included. The Student Success Fund can also support students where they are eligible Some courses (such as Sports Therapy and teacher training) require students to purchase and wear appropriate clothing e.g. approved Staffordshire University branded T-shirt/fleece, sports kit for PE students. This clothing is not provided within the tuition fees

A range of software is available to all students via the Software Downloads Portal. For example, MS Office, SPSS and AMOS and many more, see link below: https://www.staffs.ac.uk/software There is a range of software that are directly associated with specific courses, for example Art & Design, Science and Games Design. Your Course Tutor will explain these options in more detail if they are available to your course. You will be issued a username and password that will give you access to this page and many other support resources once you arrive.

IT Equipment

To facilitate a blended approach to Learning and Teaching, there are a variety of services on offer as part of your course. These include a range of open access computing facilities across Campus. The MyStaffs Uni App offers you a location finder to access these resources and spaces to work. There are specialist IT facilities that are linked to specific courses, these will be identified through the Course Information and will be managed by Technical Teams in the associated areas. You can borrow a laptop at any time for up to 24 hours from our LapSafe cabinets. These devices are full Windows 10 laptops, that are designed with portability and ease of use in mind and are available in the Science Centre and Ashley II locations.

Your school recommends that you buy your own PC or Laptop for the period of your studies. Discuss this with your Course Tutor and get some advice as to the best machine to purchase. They will offer advice as to how it can be effectively used for your blended learning experience. To aid some of those decisions, we have suggested a range of options below to inform your choice. Basic: A machine for predominantly word processing and online access to learning resources and lessons/meetings. For example, courses in Law, Policing & Forensics, Life Sciences and Education, The Staffordshire Business School, Health & Social Care and Esports. Spec - i5, 8GB, 256 SSD or similar Intermediate: A machine where greater processor power is needed for more complex software applications. For example, Computing courses offered in Stoke and the Digital Institute London. Spec - i7, 16GB, 500 SSD or similar. Specialist: Dependent on course requirements, high end CPU and GPU as appropriate in discussion with your Course Tutor. For example, courses offered in Computing, Games Design, Digital Technologies and Arts.

Staffordshire University actively promotes the development of Digital Skills to support Learning, Teaching and Working. These skills will not only add value to future career options, but in the short term they will enable you to gain maximum impact from a blended learning and teaching delivery model. You will be given access to an exciting opportunity to become a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS), Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA), Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) a Microsoft Technical Certification (MTC) or Entrepreneurship and Small Business (ESB). These are globally recognised digital badges which prove your skills and can be added to your CV or LinkedIn profile.

*Please note this is only available to students taught on our campus. Exams have to be taken on Campus in an exam room (during COVID 19 this has moved to online for a short period of time although this could cease in the coming months) It is not available to students taught at Partner Colleges or as part of the Police Apprenticeships.

Paying for your Postgraduate studies You may wish to take out a loan to help pay for your course fees and living costs while you are studying a Postgraduate programme. The money will be paid directly to you and does not normally need to be paid back until you have graduated and are earning over £21,000 a year. Masters and Doctoral loans are currently available for many of our Postgraduate taught degrees and Doctoral degrees and are provided by Student Finance.
