Staffordshire University didn’t simply have a good reputation for computing and the facilities to match; it’s a great University for a lot of fields with lecturers that help you achieve your best. I graduated with great employability skills and the technical knowledge to secure my internship with the world leading data solutions company Teradata at their London offices. The degree from Staffordshire University has helped me in my role and allowed me to progress throughout with my early career – I am now on my fourth promotion in just three years. I now work as a Technical Solutions Consultant with Teradata, who have global brands including Apple, Cisco and Ebay among their clients. The University did a lot in terms of putting students in touch with potential employers. The CEO of the company that I’m going to work for, Hedgehog Security, was invited over to judge the projects at GradEx, the annual graduate exhibition. That put me in contact with him, and I ended up getting offered a job in ethical hacking. I’ll be trained up for six months, and then I’ll be going out to companies that hire us to break into their systems. They can then identify vulnerabilities in their security and patch them up. …the best place in the country to study computer networking.

“The Computer Networks and Security course at Staffordshire University offers an excellent structured programme, giving students a thorough fundamental knowledge of computer systems before progressing into advanced networking up to the CCNP level, all while offering flexibility in the optional modules. The University’s superbly maintained Cisco labs allowed me to study the core Cisco routing and switching path, as well as security and wireless networking outside of scheduled classes. Furthermore, the University has a fully maintained rack of networking equipment that can be accessed via the Internet 24/7, enabling students to practise on live kit whenever and wherever they are. Thanks to the University’s close ties with big name companies, during my placement year I had the opportunity to live and work abroad with Cisco Systems at their European HQ in Brussels - working in one of of the largest Cisco labs in the world. This gave me invaluable real-world experience of working with today’s modern networks. This excellent course, coupled with the knowledge, friendly and approachable staff, makes Staffordshire University the best place in the country to study computer networking.” Robert Wilson, BSc(Hons) Computer Networks and Security

… without my degree I wouldn’t be where I am today.

“I graduated in 2011 with a first in Computing Science, joining Capula shortly afterwards as a Graduate Engineer. I am now Junior Project Manager and have been working on a multi-million-pound project to replace the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for a major water company. I chose Staffordshire University because it had a strong reputation with employers. The companies I’ve worked with believe that the University’s graduates have more practical knowledge than others, having been taught the core concepts and given the ability to apply those concepts to real word-situations. My degree gave me a firm understanding of the Software Development lifecycle, as well as numerous languages and technologies. The motivating lectures, coupled with the ability to tailor my module choices to my target career, put me in a strong position when applying for jobs. I knew I wanted to manage IT projects and strove to find a company that could provide me with progression into project management. Since joining Capula in August 2011, I haven’t looked back. The skills Staffordshire University gave me, both technical and social, enabled me to challenge for leadership from the start, and by November I was leading a team of 30 engineers. I have no doubt that without my degree I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am 24 years’ old and leading a technical team consisting of people from graduate age to near retirement, many of whom I have recruited. My job is challenging and hard work, but I enjoy it and I’m good at it, so thanks Staffordshire University!”

At a glance Cloud Computing is a term which is increasingly used in relation to the computing needs of both the industry and the general public, you can regularly see advertisements about working in the cloud. This Cloud Computing allows access to virtualised resources from anywhere on the planet through the network infrastructure. The cloud networks can provide companies with a large number of resources from CPU time through to running the software within this environment. The benefit to companies is the reduced cost of IT which is always trying to be achieved within the context of the increased importance placed upon the infrastructure. In addition it is the flexibility offered in relation to pay as you go services, using cloud infrastructure you can request access to more resources than normal on a temporary basis. This is an alternative from having computing servers located within your company which are only needed on a short term basis the rest of the time they sit idle. On this award you will be looking at the cloud technology not only to understand how this operates and the effects upon a commercial organisation, but also the supporting technologies. You will be looking at network communications from the deep academic understanding through to the practical aspects of generating the data through the use of virtual machines and configuring commercial grade equipment to best manage the information efficiently. On graduation, you will have a good understanding of virtualisation, Cloud Computing and network communications being qualified to support the infrastructure. In the first year, you will study modules which are intended to provide general computing knowledge and skills. Additionally though we want our students to be increasing your skills set from day one as such you will also study the entire Cisco Certified Network Associate academy certification. In addition to this we will look at the beginnings of virtualisation within the practical context of using VMware. The following years will see you deepen and extend your technical knowledge of networking and virtualisation within the context of cloud computing. We will embed into the course the certifications of CCNP and CCNA security in addition to the knowledge of VMware certifications.

These will prepare you for the widely accepted industry CCNA Routing and Switching, CCNA Security and CCNP certifications in addition to the VMware VSphere. On the Cloud Computing award our students are encouraged towards carrying out a one year relevant industrial placement. Within this award you could carry out a placement in the field of network communications or within the virtualisation context. These range from small enterprises through to large companies such as Cisco and Thomson Reuters in the UK. In addition we are very keen for our students to gain the best experience and have also placed students in Cisco’s European Headquarters in Brussels and at CERN. We want each of our students to have the life skills which will make them successful beyond the time that they are with us and want them to gain the valuable industry experience which can simply not be taught in the lab.

Course outline Year 1 (Core) • Fundamentals of Computer Networks • Hardware and Computer Systems • Data storage and Software Development • Maths for Computing • Introduction to Virtualisation Year 2 (Core) • Network Security • Routing and Switching • Virtual Computing • Professional Skills for Networking Optional placement year in industry Year 3 (Core) • Final Year Project • Converged Networks • Future Technologies • Troubleshooting a Converged IP Based Network

At a glance Today’s organisations depend on their information networks for mission-critical operations and look for highly trained networking professionals to keep them resilient and operational. The security of computer networks comes from the protection against the malicious external attacker through to the curious internal employee. The threats towards networks is ever changing and the way that data is used also effects with the usage of the Internet which has little regulation or control. The way that companies now operate means that increasing amounts of legitimate information will be coming into your network from outside sources, this could be other companies linking with you or remote workers attached. The security policies which are developed will need to be able to evaluate and allow the genuine traffic in while controlling the malicious users. Security is a vital concern for modern organisations, given the wide range of threats and the cost to companies of breaches in that security. This course will provide the knowledge and lifelong learning skills necessary to support and manage both networks and security systems in organisations, in addition to using approved methods to test this. In the first year, you will study modules which are intended to provide general computing knowledge and skills. Additionally though we want our students to be increasing your skills set from day one as such you will also study the entire Cisco Certified Network Associate academy certification. I attended several open days and considered many of the leading computing-specialist universities, but the reputation and employment prospects that a BCS-accredited degree from Staffordshire University would give me is why I selected it to enhance my career. At the Staffordshire open day, the staff were friendly, helpful and, importantly, showed their experience in industry, as well as their wealth of academic knowledge in several different fields of computing. I knew the open door policy of the lecturers and the annually upgraded IT facilities would prove invaluable in creating and growing my abilities as a software engineer. The focus on commercial experience for me was further developed through a placement at Logica’s Space & Defence division in Surrey, where I worked using several programming languages with teams of up to 130 people. This gave me my initial industry experience and, if I wished, a guaranteed job upon graduation. Throughout my course, specialist staff and personal tutors encouraged self-learning and research that stretched my knowledge, in order to develop the skills that have put me where I am today. After completing my undergraduate studies, the degree gave me the rare chance to enter the world of work through a Staffordshire University-led Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). This involved working closely with the University’s enterprise team and Blackroc Technology, a specialist hardware development company that wanted to expand by creating its own software platform. The KTP provided the opportunity of undertaking an MRes Computing Science with a focus on Augmented Reality. The experience gained here gave me the privilege to move up to Codeweavers, Staffordshire, for the development of industry-leading finance calculators and data capture software for the car finance industry. Jonathan Willis, First-class BSc(Hons) Software Engineering, now an experienced developer at Codeweavers
