OUR BRILLIANT PEOPLE

Studying abroad is challenging, but the support from the lecturers and the international community at Staffordshire University made me feel at home. The knowledge and skills I acquired during my studies gave me the confidence to apply to, and work, at one of the most innovative engineering companies in the UK, Dyson. At Staffordshire university I learnt to be brave, to take on new challenges and to push myself to succeed. Maria Jose Perez Calvo Design Engineer, Dyson

I decided to study at degree level when I realised that the shop based job I was working in would never be fulfilling. I set myself the personal goal to have designed components for vehicles that a customer can buy from a showroom, so I looked for university courses that could deliver the education needed, and Staffordshire University fitted the bill for me. Staffs Uni personally ‘opened my eyes’. It changed my social landscape and also shaped me as a person. The emphasis is on ‘you’ to do well and this is reinforced at university level – after all, you are paying for it!” After graduating in 2008, Keith has worked at Bowler Offroad as a chassis designer / engineer for their Nemesis endurance race car, and has since secured employment with Bentley Motors. I worked on suspension systems and axle components in a contract position. I then became permanent and worked as lead powertrain mount engineer for 4 years. My most recent move was to Functional Manager for wheels, tool kits and jacks. Having fulfilled one ambition, Keith is looking forward to his next challenge – to become the best manager of engineers he can be. Keith Hill BSc (Hons) Automotive Design and Technology Now, Functional Manager, Bentley Motors

My name is James Bruce and I graduated in 2015. I started out on the foundation degree then took the top-up course to complete the BSc (Hons) Motorsport Technology degree.

I GOT PLENTY OF HANDS ON EXPERIENCE INCLUDING A WORK PLACEMENT WITH A MOTORSPORT TEAM.

I worked as a diagnostic technician for Honda after leaving school but decided to study Motorsport Technology at University to move up the career ladder. It got to the point where I couldn’t advance in a technical role without taking a degree. Plus I wanted to make the move from working with road cars to race cars and the course at Staffs seemed ideal. I think the in-depth learning that some of the modules offer has definitely opened my eyes. Although I’ve come from a professional environment I’ve definitely learned a lot. On the course I got plenty of hands on experience including a work placement with a motorsport team. I think being part of a race team and getting a degree at the same time put me in better stead than just getting a degree. It takes both parts to be employable. I now work in Woking as a technician for McLaren in the vehicle development department and travelled to Germany for crash-testing in my second week in the role. It was great to start the job! It’s really good to get out there and experience doing something different. I don’t think I’d have got the job and had that opportunity if wasn’t for the course. James Bruce BSc (Hons) Motorsport Technology Technician, McLaren Automotive

A BETTER CAMPUS

AT STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, WE’RE COMMITTED TO INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE – LITERALLY. OVER A PERIOD OF 18 MONTHS, WE’RE SPENDING MILLIONS OF POUNDS ON OUR UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES, SO WHEN YOU JOIN US, YOU’LL BE COMING TO A PLACE WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START OPENING DOORS AND BREAKING BOUNDARIES.

In recent years, our Stoke-on-Trent campus has undergone a massive transformation, with the students at the heart of our plans. From the amazing Science Centre to environmental improvements, we’re focused on building the best campus for our students. But whilst it’s all well and good a university saying they care what students think, we’re putting our money where our mouth is. This all stems from a decision to make Stoke-on-Trent the main campus of Staffordshire University. In 2016 the majority of students from our Stafford Computing and Technology courses will be

10

moving to the Stoke-on-Trent campus. So we’re making sure that when you arrive, you enter a university that is fit for purpose. One with a great mix of study and social spaces. One that feels safe and thrives on the friendly reputation we’ve built. What we found was that a modern edge-of-city campus is ideal. Close enough to the city for the social life, but far enough away to focus on studying. Great transport links around the city, but also great spaces around the campus. The best of both worlds. So, starting in Summer 2015, we’ll be working on the College Road and Leek Road sites of our Stoke Campus. We’ll be creating great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, venues and teaching rooms. Bringing the best teaching facilities together with fantastic student areas – making it feel safe and easy to jump between your lectures and your life outside University. As well as that, we’re also investing £12m in a new Computing and Games facility. This project, called Digital Kiln, will merge beautiful learning space with state-of-theart technology to support all sorts of courses from Cyber Security to Games Design.

This investment is continuing the work we’ve already started to create great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, halls of residence, and other facilities. We’ve committed to doubling the investment that’s already started to create enhanced facilities. Come 2016, it’s going to have the buzz and the feel of the edge-of-city campus that students want. Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Gunn Healthcare Centres of Excellence This redevelopment work isn’t just happening in Stoke-on-Trent though. Healthcare and Midwifery students won’t miss out with significant further investment in our Centres of Excellence in Stafford and Shrewsbury – adding new student spaces and learning resources to make these campuses totally self-contained and right up to date. So, with all this to come, maybe it’s time you joined us at Staffordshire University?
