Do you have a passion for policing or science and an interest in how criminal investigations are undertaken? Do you want a career filled with challenges and variety? If so, one of our degrees in Forensic and Crime Sciences could be perfect for you. But which one? Forensic Science teaches you how to apply scientific methods in analysing evidence recovered from crime scenes, to assist in solving crimes. So if you are interested in techniques like using gas chromatography to identify seized drugs, and using DNA profiling to help identify a suspect from a bloodstain, Forensic Science could be the right degree for you. If you want more practical experience in crime scene processing, laboratory evidence analysis and investigative techniques, then Forensic Investigation might be more suitable. And if you’re interested in the way investigative leads are used to build cases against criminals, our degree in Policing and Criminal Investigation is probably best, so you can learn how to interview suspects, build prosecution case files and apply policing policy to operational practice. Here at Staffordshire, you will be taught by a dedicated, dynamic and highly experienced team that includes ex-senior

police officers, career academics with international research profiles and those with extensive experience of forensic casework. We also have superb facilities for you to study in, including a fully equipped crime scene house with grounds, excellent analytical laboratories and specialist rooms for studying everything from decomposition to ballistics. In addition to this, all of our degrees have the option to be studied with a year in industry and/or a period of study abroad (The Netherlands, the US or Canada), and contain work experience opportunities. We have a unique partnership with Staffordshire Police giving you the opportunity to work in real-world forensics by attending crime scenes, processing evidence and/or carrying out impactful research and development. You will find everything you need to know about our courses here, and on our website. You can also find us on Twitter and Facebook to keep up with what we are doing now. But there’s no substitute for seeing it for yourself. The majority of those who attend one of our open days choose to study here! We hope to see you soon
Which Level is For You? – Foundation Year, BSc (Hons) or MSci? OUR BRILLIANT PEOPLE
My Forensic Science degree at Staffordshire University has given me an array of skills and experience that has helped me to gain my current role in the pharmaceutical industry. The hands on approach to studying meant that I was able to put theory into practice and get a better understanding of my subjects; this was particularly useful in lab scenarios as I am soon to be undertaking a PGCE in Chemistry.
I am now a Forensic Investigator for West Mercia Police and I have found that the theoretical knowledge and practical skills gained during my course have been vital in helping me secure full time employment in a forensic environment.
I really enjoyed the range of subjects that were taught and being able to give myself some direction by choosing optional modules that suited me along with a dissertation topic I was interested and enthusiastic about. From my degree experience I learnt how to balance both my studies and my extra-curricular activities in order to get the best of both worlds, along with valuable practical experience, which has helped to get me where I am today.
The Forensic and Crime Science department provides each student with enormous support and a platform for them to excel and grow as a person and build fundamental skills to thrive in a work place environment. The course provides an excellent balance of a range of forensic science disciplines as well as the core investigative knowledge which I have found to be critical in succeeding in my current job. Specifically the degree provides students with an in depth background of forensics and a range of practical skills, such as processing crime scenes in Staffordshire University’s very own crime scene house. Another important aspect is the relationship the department has with forensic and policing organisations. There is a current placement scheme set up with Staffordshire Police which provides students with real experience and a chance to design research products to work in an operational environment. The lecturers have distinguished backgrounds and practical experience within the forensic and policing areas which are passed on to the students – this is much more valuable than a standard forensic textbook! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Staffordshire University and I have gained the most out of my course which has helped me succeed in starting a forensic career. Craig Ratcliffe (second from left) MSci Forensic Investigation Now working as a Forensic Investigator (Imaging) with West Mercia Police Force.
Kathryn Roberts BSc (Hons) Forensic Science Now working as a Pharmaceutical Process Technician at Ipsen
I graduated from Staffordshire University in 2014 with a 2:1 BSc (Hons) Forensic Investigation. I am currently working as a Digital Forensic Examiner in a mobile phone department. I thoroughly enjoyed my Forensic Investigation degree at Staffordshire University. In my three years I gained so much knowledge and experience. The practical side of the degree is fantastic, giving you the opportunity to attend mock crime scenes. Here you will seize evidence and then go on to analyse your exhibits in a laboratory. Finally you will produce your evidence in court, and be cross examined as if you were a Reporting Scientist. If it wasn’t for my degree I would not be where I am today. Staffordshire University introduced me to a research project scheme and, combined with my own determination, I was offered a temporary role in that organisation, where I have since been successful in a permanent position. AT STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, WE’RE COMMITTED TO INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE – LITERALLY. OVER A PERIOD OF 18 MONTHS, WE’RE SPENDING MILLIONS OF POUNDS ON OUR UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES, SO WHEN YOU JOIN US, YOU’LL BE COMING TO A PLACE WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START OPENING DOORS AND BREAKING BOUNDARIES.
In recent years, our Stoke-on-Trent campus has undergone a massive transformation, with the students at the heart of our plans. From the amazing Science Centre to environmental improvements, we’re focused on building the best campus for our students. But whilst it’s all well and good a university saying they care what students think, we’re putting our money where our mouth is. This all stems from a decision to make Stoke-on-Trent the main campus of Staffordshire University. In 2016 the majority of students from our Stafford Computing and Technology courses will be

moving to the Stoke-on-Trent campus. So we’re making sure that when you arrive, you enter a university that is fit for purpose. One with a great mix of study and social spaces. One that feels safe and thrives on the friendly reputation we’ve built. What we found was that a modern edge-of-city campus is ideal. Close enough to the city for the social life, but far enough away to focus on studying. Great transport links around the city, but also great spaces around the campus. The best of both worlds. So, starting in Summer 2015, we’ll be working on the College Road and Leek Road sites of our Stoke Campus. We’ll be creating great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, venues and teaching rooms. Bringing the best teaching facilities together with fantastic student areas – making it feel safe and easy to jump between your lectures and your life outside University. As well as that, we’re also investing £12m in a new Computing and Games facility. This project, called Digital Kiln, will merge beautiful learning space with state-of-theart technology to support all sorts of courses from Cyber Security to Games Design.
This investment is continuing the work we’ve already started to create great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, halls of residence, and other facilities. We’ve committed to doubling the investment that’s already started to create enhanced facilities. Come 2016, it’s going to have the buzz and the feel of the edge-of-city campus that students want. Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Gunn Healthcare Centres of Excellence This redevelopment work isn’t just happening in Stoke-on-Trent though. Healthcare and Midwifery students won’t miss out with significant further investment in our Centres of Excellence in Stafford and Shrewsbury – adding new student spaces and learning resources to make these campuses totally self-contained and right up to date. So, with all this to come, maybe it’s time you joined us at Staffordshire University?
