GAMES
GET TOGETHER WITH OUR
CREATIVE
MINDS Computer gaming isn’t simply a global pastime – it’s an area of technology that is constantly innovating, challenging, advancing and evolving. Just think, for example, about some of the AAA releases and how the level of detail, engagement, excitement and involvement in those games is light years ahead of what was considered industry-standard only a few years ago! In recent times the growth of the Indie Studios has given rise to an explosion of games and opportunities to join a small band of dedicated developers as an alternative to AAA studios. The UK is a hot bed of games talent particularly here in the West Midlands, where near 40% of all the UKs Games Companies are clustered – which is great news if you not only love gaming, but also want to make it your career!
Studio and regularly Games companies come to the University for Development Days and training. Students can take the opportunity to mingle and socialise with these games companies, building up their contacts for their futures.
At Staffordshire University, we’ve gained an impressive reputation for the quality of and range of our Games degrees.
We’re renowned for the high standards of our teaching and we’ve forged solid relationships with some of the biggest names across the gaming industry. Our Courses are recognised as excellent regarding employability .We have gained TIGA Accreditation and Creative Skillset Accreditation, which recognises the accredited courses as being a significant UK gateway for student employment in the Games Industry when they graduate.
We work closely with our Visiting Professor Mike Gamble, European Territories Manger for EPIC Games, to maintain industry relevant courses giving our graduates excellent opportunities to gain employment in the games industry. EPIC Games sponsor our state-of-the art Games Design Dr Bobbie Fletcher Academic Group Leader
2
As the industry looks toward cutting edge ways for immersion in computer games the spotlight has fallen on Virtual Reality and all the possibilities that promises. We have amazing ties with our Honorary Doctor Mick Hocking, Vice President of Sony Europe, who is driving development of VR with the Morpheus project and with whom we are working on exciting new projects in VR Games.
THERE’S A LOT OF TALK ABOUT THE NEED FOR THE INDUSTRY TO GET MORE INVOLVED WITH THE ACADEMIC PROCESS AND HAVE A GREATER INPUT INTO HOW GAMES DESIGN IS TAUGHT. COLLABORATING WILL ENABLE STAFFS STUDENTS TO HAVE A DIRECT LINK WITH EPIC AND A DIRECT LINE TO THE HEART OF THE INDUSTRY. Mike Gamble European Territory Manager at Epic Games.

The Games provision at Staffordshire University comes under five main areas, each with its own skills and mind set.
Design (Aesthetic and Technical) BSc (Hons) or BEng/MEng (Hons) Computer Games Design BSc (Hons) Computer Games Design with Foundation Year If you have ever looked at a game and thought I could have designed that better then one of these courses is for you. Designing a game is a huge undertaking and spans a wide range of skills. These courses give you the freedom to tailor your degree from 3D Modelling right the way through to Level Creation in a games engine or as combination of both, depending on what excites you about the design of a game. BSc(Hons) Computer Games Design with Foundation Year is the alternative to BSc (Hons) or BEng/MEng (Hons) Computer Games Design if you don’t quite get enough UCAS points to get on the Degree straight away or are a mature student using this as access to higher education. It’s an extra year to get you started.

WHICH COURSE
IS RIGHT
FOR YOU? 6
BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming BSc (Hons) or BEng/MEng (Hons) Computer Games Design and Programming If you have the logical brain for programming and a passion for games then one of these awards is for you. BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming focusses on the core programming skills used to create games engines, which contain programmed graphics, physics, AI, audio, user interface and networking elements. This will give you the skills to become a programmer in many contexts, from large AAA Games Studios to small mobile game developers, as
well as in the wider Computing industry. Whereas BSc (Hons) or BEng/MEng (Hons) Computer Games Design and Programming include some of these skills, combined with elements of 3D modelling and the use of off the shelf games engines such as UE4 and Unity. This gives you a range of knowledge and skills particularly useful for working in smaller development teams.
Art Asset Creation BSc (Hons) Games Art BSc (Hons) Games Concept Design BSc (Hons) Games Animation* If you have a desire to create the amazing art you see in the games then one of these courses is for you. The different types of art asset created for a game are wide ranging. If you want to focus on creating dazzling 3D Environments and 3D Character models then BSc (Hons) Games Art is the course for you. On the other hand if you like to hand draw beautiful assets and use digital matt painting to enhance them mainly in 2D then BSc (Hons) Games Concept Design is the one. BSc (Hons) Games Animation* makes elements of both 2D and 3D art and uses imagination and technical expertise to make the art come to life with the aid of our Vicon Motion Capture Studio.
Core Gameplay Design and Visual Scripting BSc (Hons) or BEng/MEng (Hons) Computer Gameplay Design and Production BSc (Hons) Indie Games Development* If you’re the type of person who isn’t mesmerised by whether a game is beautiful, but loves the heart stopping dynamics of good gameplay with the perfect balance of risk Discover more: www.staffs.ac.uk/undergraduate
and reward then one of these courses is for you. BSc (Hons) or BEng/MEng (Hons) Computer Gameplay Design and Production studies and generates novel gameplay ideas and transforms the gameplay elements into working prototypes in a games engine such as UE4 and Unity. The goal is to improve the design and balance of the game mechanics through redesign and testing. BSc (Hons) Indie Games Development* takes those elements but adds in an element of business where you can learn how to create and successfully run your own Independent games company.
Understanding Games BSc (Hons) Games Journalism and PR BSc (Hons) Games Studies* If you are interested in understanding people and how they interact with games then one of these courses is for you. This is an emerging area in the Games Industry. It focusses not on making the games, which require technical skills, but on operational skills. BSc (Hons) Games Journalism and PR is about learning the trade as a journalist and applying those skills to reporting on the Games Industry, via print or online medium, as well as being the public face of a games company in public relations. BSc (Hons) Games Studies* is an inter-disciplinary course combining areas such as games technology, sociology, philosophy, arts and literature, media studies and communication. This course makes students understand Gamers and Gaming cultures across the world and contextualise Games in a modern society. * subject to validation

OUR BRILLIANT PEOPLE
Michael Knowland who graduated in the summer of 2009 started work at Frontier Games in Cambridge directly after graduation. In the spring of 2010 he returned to Staffordshire University to deliver a very detailed and insightful Zbrush master class for current students. The master class focused on sculpting fabrics, and Unwrapping. After a year in work, on launch titles for Kinect at Frontier, he was picked up by Naughty Dog and moved to Santa Monica. Since then he has become Lead Character Artist working on Uncharted3 and The Last of Us, creating the characters of Ellie and Joel. Michael is now a Senior Character Artist at Avalanche Studios in New York working on Just Cause 3. “Studying Computer Games Design at Staffordshire University was a fantastic experience, and an excellent way to getting me prepared to begin my career as a 3D Character Artist. I was able to get a scope of nearly all fields in the games industry, and yet it also really helped me to focus my skills and decide what I was going to do, and ultimately increase the chance of me landing my first job. I met a tonne of good friends along the way, and really had a blast!” Michael Knowland BEng (Hons) Computer Games Design Now working at Senior Character Artist Avalanche Studios NY
“Staffordshire University provided me with some of the most enjoyable and fulfilling years of my life studying a BEng (Hons) Computer Gameplay Design and Production. The lectures were both stimulating and fun with lecturers passionate and overflowing with enthusiasm for their modules. After three years at Staffs making some of the best friends and most awesome memories, I was snapped up for a job even before I finished my degree based on the skills and education I’d received whilst studying. I did my placement at Frontier Developments in Cambridge and it was them that offered me the position. Without my hard work at Staffordshire University and the first class degree that blossomed from it, I don’t think this would have been possible, even with me attending university a few years later than most!” Kenny Wildman BEng (Hons) Computer Gameplay Design and Production Now working as Assistant Producer at Frontier Development Games Company.

My degree has taken me to one of the world’s leading names in computer gaming’ The learning environment at Staffs is one I will look back on fondly. I thrived under the rich feedback that lecturers were able to provide me with and constantly had lecturers giving me tips, resources and advice that I could take away after the lecture or workshop and work on in my own time. There aren’t many places where you have access to a £300,000 motion capture suite, but Staffs has one and it was a blast to use. I had heard of and knew a bit about motion capture technology, but actually getting to use it was a real experience that I still remember and would love to try again.” “Throughout my studies I remained involved with the Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) gaming scene I had beta tested years earlier, EVE Online, by CCP Games in Reykjavik, Iceland. It had become quite a popular game after its release in 2003 and I had plenty of friends – and even some lecturers – at university who also played. I joined the player volunteer program during the beta testing phase. As a volunteer, I was able to become involved in areas such as bug hunting, customer support and storyline writing and player events. Several years of being a volunteer put me in good stead with CCP.” “I nurtured this relationship by attending the annual Fanfest conference in Iceland organised by CCP to help maintain old friendships and contacts and to make new ones. When I graduated, my studies gave me the understanding and experience needed to get started in the industry and these contacts really helped me get my foot in the door.” Ben Hunter BSc (Hons) Games Design Now Working for CCP Games specialising in graphics testing and assuring the quality of the 3D environment artwork

A BETTER CAMPUS
AT STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, WE’RE COMMITTED TO INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE – LITERALLY. OVER A PERIOD OF 18 MONTHS, WE’RE SPENDING MILLIONS OF POUNDS ON OUR UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES, SO WHEN YOU JOIN US, YOU’LL BE COMING TO A PLACE WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START OPENING DOORS AND BREAKING BOUNDARIES.
In recent years, our Stoke-on-Trent campus has undergone a massive transformation, with the students at the heart of our plans. From the amazing Science Centre to environmental improvements, we’re focused on building the best campus for our students. But whilst it’s all well and good a university saying they care what students think, we’re putting our money where our mouth is. This all stems from a decision to make Stoke-on-Trent the main campus of Staffordshire University. In 2016 the majority of students from our Stafford Computing and Technology courses will be
14
moving to the Stoke-on-Trent campus. So we’re making sure that when you arrive, you enter a university that is fit for purpose. One with a great mix of study and social spaces. One that feels safe and thrives on the friendly reputation we’ve built. What we found was that a modern edge-of-city campus is ideal. Close enough to the city for the social life, but far enough away to focus on studying. Great transport links around the city, but also great spaces around the campus. The best of both worlds. So, starting in Summer 2015, we’ll be working on the College Road and Leek Road sites of our Stoke Campus. We’ll be creating great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, venues and teaching rooms. Bringing the best teaching facilities together with fantastic student areas – making it feel safe and easy to jump between your lectures and your life outside University. As well as that, we’re also investing £12m in a new Computing and Games facility. This project, called Digital Kiln, will merge beautiful learning space with state-of-theart technology to support all sorts of courses from Cyber Security to Games Design.
This investment is continuing the work we’ve already started to create great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, halls of residence, and other facilities. We’ve committed to doubling the investment that’s already started to create enhanced facilities. Come 2016, it’s going to have the buzz and the feel of the edge-of-city campus that students want. Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Gunn Healthcare Centres of Excellence This redevelopment work isn’t just happening in Stoke-on-Trent though. Healthcare and Midwifery students won’t miss out with significant further investment in our Centres of Excellence in Stafford and Shrewsbury – adding new student spaces and learning resources to make these campuses totally self-contained and right up to date. So, with all this to come, maybe it’s time you joined us at Staffordshire University?
