WHY STAFFS? OPERATING DEPARTMENT PRACTICE Our reputation for producing employable graduates is well known across the UK, and with the role of Operating Department Practitioners rapidly developing within hospitals, our ODP graduates are among the most in demand and quickly employed. But what exactly is an ODP? Many people who have never worked in healthcare have no idea what the role actually entails. But ODPs are an essential and much needed role in hospitals and other surgical settings. Operating Department Practitioners play a vital role in caring for the physical and emotional wellbeing of patients before, during and immediately after surgery. It’s a job that requires intellectual, physical and emotional intelligence and resilience, as well as in-depth knowledge, a wide skills base and enthusiasm for professional development. As well as supporting patients by being their number one source of support and information at a very difficult time, you are part of a multi-disciplinary team that care for the patient within
10
the perioperative environment. As such an ODP qualification can open up a very wide range of challenging and exciting career paths. At the pre-operative stage of an operation your duties might include performing pre-surgery checklists, getting equipment ready, assisting the anaesthetist or protecting the patient’s airway. During surgery specific tasks often include supporting safe anaesthesia alongside the anaesthetist, a scrubbed or circulating role, wound management and infection control, working alongside the surgeon, accounting for swabs, needles and instruments, checking everyone is following health and safety procedures and communicating between theatre and other parts of the hospital. Then as your patient starts their post-operative recovery ODPs do things like assessing and looking after the patient in the recovery unit, monitoring and supporting the
patient, providing the right treatment to help the patient recover from the effects of anaesthetic, and evaluating the patient’s care from beginning to end in order to recommend improvements. Our ODP Diploma will give you a high standard of training in key theatre roles, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of 100% of our ODP graduates by walking straight into a job as soon as you leave. The kind of jobs you might find yourself doing could be supporting cardiac arrest teams, attending on trauma calls, or working on inter-hospital transfers, transplant teams and intensive care units. As well as allowing you to become an ODP, you’ll also be eligible to apply for professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Our two-year, full-time course combines academic study and clinical practice, and 60% of your time will be dedicated to clinical practice on placements in local Staffordshire and Stoke-On-Trent
NHS Trusts studying surgical areas like general surgery, orthopaedics and obstetrics.Outside of clinical settings you’ll split your time between classroom learning and our Skills Lab, a new high-tech learning facility that recreates a surgical theatre to help you gain practice and knowledge across a wide range of areas in an almost real-life environment. Our wide-ranging syllabus has been designed to reflect real-world ODP roles, spanning practical and theoretical issues like biological and behavioural sciences, perioperative care and practice, operating department technology, health and social policy and legal and ethical issues. ODPs are the patient’s champion, and as such you’ll have a very wide remit. So we’ll ensure you graduate with a good awareness of all the kinds of issues that might affect your future patients.

“As a personal tutor and lecturer to pre-registration nursing students, I consider it a privilege to be a part of the students’ individual journey and quest to become a qualified nurse. The first day of the programme is often one of intense emotions as students take the first tentative step on their journey and equally as they attend their final day of their programme, the day is filled once again with a mix of intense emotions which is a joy to be part of and one that fills me with pride as the next cohort of nurses leave us ready and well prepared for the next stage of their career.” Jayne Evans Adult Nursing Lecturer

“I qualified as a paediatric nurse in January 2011. I then began my career at Birmingham Children’s Hospital on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit which gave me a great foundation in nursing skills. In 2013 I undertook a part time Diploma in Tropical Nursing at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I have since utilized this knowledge by partaking in a 6 month exchange programme at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Malawi where I was involved with training and supporting the nurses and students. I have also spent 6 months in Kenya at an orphanage and street children project. I have discovered that a nursing career opens up so many opportunities and for those who are willing to put in the necessary time and effort, the rewards are worth it.” Chris Saunders Children’s Nursing Graduate
“I am very proud to be the Lead Midwife for Education for Staffordshire University as I know that our commitment to develop first class midwives who promote woman-centred, evidence-based care is reflected fully in the ethos of the Faculty.
