GRADUATE SUCCESS Recognised as a gateway to an exciting career, our awards are highly valued in the international business world. You’ll find Staffordshire University graduates in all kinds of places across the globe – from business and science, to industry and commerce. Here are a few examples of recent success: “My biggest achievement so far was to get a job at Microsoft Xbox on my placement year. After five different interviews and tests, I secured a place as a Software Developer for Xbox at Soho Studios, London. There, I worked one year on the unreleased -at the time- console, the Xbox One, on two different projects. It’s the classic story of child plays game, child becomes gamer. In time, I found out that you can actually have a career in game making. Thus, it became one of my goals to secure a place at a university abroad that would help me get that career. Staffordshire University has been a place where I’ve learned many things about games programming. The lecturers have all been helpful and eager to assist me in all my endeavours, and I can’t say that there was a day when I left Uni without all my questions answered.

“I graduated from Staffordshire with great employability skills and an excellent portfolio – something that’s essential in graphic design. I worked to real challenges and live briefs, developed great communication and presentation skills and won the London-based brand agency Coley Porter Bell Shine Award. This meant a £3,000 cash prize and a three month work placement. I now work for Coley Porter Bell full-time as a graphic designer. It’s proper work, with real commercial value, for global brand owners like Unilever and Nestlé.”

YASHWANTH NOOKA

STUDENTS’ UNION VICE PRESIDENT

What’s your role and how does it help the international student body? I’m an international student and Vice President of the Students’ Union. I help international students to fully experience student life by encouraging them to get involved in events and activities throughout the academic year. What activities does the Student Union have?

Our campuses are well equipped for study, relaxation and leisure activities. We have 24-hour libraries, more than 2,500 networked computers and a wide range of academic and vocational facilities. There are also lots of places to unwind – including coffee bars, cafés, restaurants and Students’ Union venues. What’s life like as a student at Staffs?

Life as a student at Staffordshire University is an amazing experience. In fact, according to a recent survey*, 90% of international students are “very satisfied” with the University. What made you choose Staffordshire University? I chose Staffs because it had a vast selection of courses, a great international reputation and impressive placement opportunities.

What’s the best part about studying here? The best things about studying here are the diverse range of modules, the amount of support available for international students and the sheer diversity within the University. The Students’ Union is great too. How has studying here helped you academically and personally? Studying here has helped me to gain global exposure. It’s also given me a good knowledge of my subject, as well as good transferable skills. Working as a student staff member within the Students’ Union has enabled me to make lots of new friends – it’s been great for my social skills. How has Staffordshire University prepared you for your future career?

Our modern halls of residence are safe, secure, well maintained and among the most affordable in the UK. Each bedroom is fully furnished, with access to shared kitchen, dining and shower facilities. Most have computer and telephone connection points – and some have en-suite facilities.

Studying here has given me the confidence to pursue my chosen career when I graduate.

Shops and launderettes are close-by and you’ll never be more than a short walk away from your lectures – so you’ll have everything you need within easy reach.

What would be your advice to any international student looking to study at Staffordshire University?

My advice is: Choose Staffs! There can be a bit of a culture shock when you move to a new country, but if you feel a little apprehensive – or if you have any other issues while you’re adapting – the International Student Support team or the Students’ Union are all very friendly and always happy to help. INTERVIEW WITH

KOFFI KPONOUGLO STUDENT AMBASSADOR

Why did you want to be a student ambassador and how did it happen? During freshers’ week, a student ambassador gave me some information about the role. I was really impressed with the flexibility offered and loved the idea of sharing my experiences with prospective students, so I applied and got the job after a successful interview.

What is the best part about studying here? My lecturers are incredible. They invest time in me and encourage me to achieve my goals. I also love the practical studio work because I get to use industry standard equipment such as cameras, radio desks, lighting equipment and video editing software.

What kind of projects are you involved with?

How has Staffordshire University prepared you for your future career?

I’ve worked on open days, graduation ceremonies, the clearing hotline and road shows. I particularly enjoy working on the open days – it’s great talking to prospective students and their parents face-toface and answering questions as they explore the campuses and accommodation.

While working on a documentary production, I took on roles such as director, cinematographer and researcher, as well as hosting a weekly radio show on the OMG Media network. I developed my confidence and gained practical experience of working in the media industry.

What is life like as a student at Staffs?

What’s your advice for international students looking to study here?

It’s great being a student here. The teaching facilities are excellent – particularly in the media centre, and radio and TV studios. I’ve made friends with students and staff and I’ve joined the AfroCaribbean, Badminton and Film societies, where I’ve met lots more friends with similar interests.

What made you choose Staffordshire University? Staffs stood out from other universities because everyone was so friendly and welcoming during the open day. All my questions were answered and all my concerns were addressed. Course leaders even recommended a more suitable course than the one I’d planned to study – they were brilliant.

20

International 2015 Guide

My advice is: Enjoy every moment! You’ll have the support of the international team to settle in smoothly and you’ll study alongside students from all over the world. Don’t worry about fitting into the university way of life – everyone at Staffs will make you feel welcome. You’ll love it!
