School of Psychology, Sport and Exercise The School of Psychology, Sport and Exercise offers a comprehensive choice of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees - all of which provide a real world focus. All our Psychology undergraduate courses are accredited by the British Psychological Society. Our Sport and Exercise Sciences degree is endorsed by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, while our Sports Therapy degree is accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists.
School of Social Work, Allied and Public Health The School of Social Work, Allied and Public Health brings together staff from a wide range of disciplines to offer courses in Health and Social Care Studies, Osteopathy; Social Welfare, Law Policy and Advice Practice, and Social Work. We lay particular emphasis within the social work programme area upon giving students the opportunity to develop their social work skills, and particularly the active listening and interviewing skills that are at the heart of social work practice.

Research activity covers the psychological aspects of sport performance, community interventions to enhance physical activity, physiological training in elite child athletes, disability sport, and biomechanics.

Our specialist facilities include: biomechanics, physiology and nutrition labs, a sports therapy lab, a psychology observation and cognitive suite, a psychology counselling suite, a psychology human sciences suite, a sports psychology lab, a peak condition clinic, and specialist IT facilities. Through these facilities, you’ll have the chance use professional equipment such as motion capture software, ultrasound machines, eyetrackers and counselling cubicles.

Work ready, world ready After postgraduate study, the career options for Chartered Psychologists are wide and varied. Depending on your own area of interest, you could work in clinical, educational, occupational, forensic, counselling or sport and exercise psychology. Or you could work in anything from human resources, market research and public relations, to retail management, academia, research or teaching. Graduates from our Sport and Exercise courses work in sports development, coaching, teaching, facility management, sports science, sports therapy and health promotion. During your studies, you’ll have the opportunity to gain qualifications, training and experience. You could also secure part-time work within sport in your local community.
MEET THE LECTURERS Dr Peter Jones Head of School – Psychology, Sport and Exercise Dr Peter Jones has an academic background in Sport and Exercise Science and completed his undergraduate degree and PhD at Liverpool John Moores University. He has worked at several higher education institutions, including the University of Hertfordshire, Moulton College Northampton, the University of Derby and the University of Northampton. With a wealth of teaching and leadership experience – everything from establishing and running new degrees programmes, to overhauling existing programmes and enhancing and developing successful teams – Peter leads a very successful team at Staffordshire University of more than 80 academics, over 1,200 undergraduates, more than 400 postgraduates and several research groups.
Dr Emily Buckley Academic Group Leader: Psychology Dr Emily Buckley completed her Psychology degree at the University of Lincoln and later achieved the MSc in Health Psychology at Staffordshire University. She then worked as a Research Associate and part-time Lecturer in Health Psychology and in 2005, she was the first student to complete the Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology here at Staffs. Soon after, Emily started a full-time lecturing position here. Emily has been involved in establishing a postgraduate sub-committee of the BPS Division of Health Psychology – of which she was Chair for two years. She has also been Chair of the DHP Continuing Professional Development sub-committee, and member of the Division of Health Psychology Committee. Emily was a member of the BPS Board of Assessors in Health Psychology from 2009 to 2010.
Mr John Erskine Academic Group Leader: Sport and Exercise John Erskine has been teaching at Staffordshire University for over 20 years and has held a range of roles, including Level Tutor, Module Leader, Course Leader and Scheme Leader. His teaching expertise lies in exercise psychology and in how skilled behaviour is acquired in sport. During the past 10 years, John’s focus has been on appropriate adoption of technology supported learning to improve the student learning experience. He led the University’s move in September 2005 to an online model of delivery for postgraduate taught provision in Sport and Exercise, including MSc courses in Sport and Exercise Science and Sport and Exercise Psychology. More recently, John has been involved developing curricula and technology based solutions to support the delivery of The Staffordshire Graduate to our undergraduate students.

Health Psychology is one of the latest branches of Psychology to be given professional status by the British Psychological Society (BPS). This means you’ll need to complete an accredited MSc in Health Psychology as the first step towards gaining Chartered Health Psychologist status and registration with HCPC as a Health Psychologist.
Health psychology can be defined as the study of psychological processes and their application to health, illness and health care. The Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology provides supervision to enable you to develop skills in research, teaching, professional skills and consultancy. The course follows the framework for Stage 2 professional training in health psychology that is set by the Health Psychology division of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
Through this course, you’ll develop your skills in research methods applied to health, gain an understanding of health psychology and consider the ethical and moral aspects of different approaches to health issues. You’ll also demonstrate the ability to carry out independent research. This course is fully accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). Graduates from this course gain Stage 2 accreditation towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist and eligibility to apply to register as a Health Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The course will equip you with D-level skills in research, teaching, consultancy, professional practice and behaviour change interventions. All students who started Stage 1 training in health psychology after September 1st 2001 – and who wish to become Chartered Psychologists – are required to pass the Stage 2 qualification. In addition, since July 1st 2009, students have been required to pass the Stage 2 qualification in order to be eligible to apply to the HCPC for registration as a Health Psychologist. The qualification provides a guarantee for employers and clients of competence in core aspects of health psychology and professional practice, including research, consultancy, and teaching skills. Placement opportunities: You’re expected to arrange learning opportunities outside the institution, with the support of your supervisor, to ensure that you’re able to attain the competencies required on the Professional Doctorate Programme. Placement learning will normally last for two years for full-time students and for four years for part-time students. However, the exact nature of the placement will depend on your individual needs. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that’s based on the theory that psychological symptoms are developed and maintained as a result of the interaction between the thoughts, emotions and behavioural responses of the individual. In cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), the therapist and client work together to identify and change thoughts and behaviours that may be maintaining symptoms.
The MSc in Sports Coaching has been developed for active coaches to provide an advanced multidisciplinary understanding of current issues relating to the theory and practice of sports coaching. The course is aimed at supporting both ‘participation’ and ‘performance development’ coaches who are seeking academic credit as part of their professional development, arising from either personal interest or in relation to endorsed National Governing Body coaching certificates.
This course will help you to develop the theoretical knowledge, reflective abilities and practical skills to become skilled and independent CBT practitioners with adults with common mental health difficulties, such as anxiety and depression. You’ll do this through a combination of formal teaching and skills practice – with feedback and supervised clinical practice. The learning outcomes for the award are based on national guidance regarding the Improving Access to Psychological Therapists (IAPT) curriculum for high Intensity Therapists and the requirements of the BABCP. Where this is not the case, trainees must organise their own placement, ensuring they will have access to at least eight clients with a variety of commonly occurring mental health difficulties. See the BABCP website for more details. Graduate destinations: Successful trainees are deemed to be independent CBT practitioners and are eligible for BABCP accreditation. As such, most trainees work as High Intensity therapists within IAPT services or work for private organisations providing CBT.

Module overview: • Effective Coaching 1: Strategy and Practice Develops a critical understanding of both your coaching philosophy and different approaches to the coach-athlete relationship. • Advanced Research Methods and Data Analysis Develops and enhances an understanding of research methodology and statistical skills utilising both quantitative and qualitative approaches to examine data sets related to sports coaching. • Group Dynamics and Leadership in Sport and Exercise The module examines the application of social psychological theory to sport and exercise settings with a focus on audience effects, groups, and leadership, and on how these processes may impact on the performance of athletes, coaches, trainers and managers. • Effective Coaching 2: Reflective Practice Different approaches and practices related to reflective practice will be examined to develop a critical understanding of reflective practice in sports coaching. • Skilled Performance Under Pressure Current models of skill acquisition are introduced alongside evidence linking the structure, organisation and design of practice to the effective emergence of sport related skills. • Masters Research Project This module involves the planning and execution and write up of a research project as either a peer reviewed journal article, standard dissertation or a portfolio of research. Graduate destinations: This online course is aimed at active, busy coaches who wish to upskill their coaching knowledge and competencies to position themselves at the forefront of effective coaching practice.

Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology aims to provide you with a critical understanding of current issues relating to the application of psychological theory to sport and exercise settings. It is the only distance-learning postgraduate qualification in sport and exercise psychology offered by a university in the UK. The award has been developed for individuals who possess an appropriate honours degree in sport science or a related topic.
We have over a decade of experience in delivering our online MSc Applied Sport and Exercise science course. It has been developed to provide an advanced multidisciplinary understanding of the contemporary issues that apply to sport and exercise science. You will examine these issues using a mix of ‘discipline-based’ and ‘theme-based’ modules and produce a substantial piece of independent research.

The MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology is the only distance-learning postgraduate qualification in sport and exercise psychology offered by a university in the UK. It has been developed to equip students with a critical understanding of current issues relating to the application of psychological theory to sport and exercise settings.
The MSc Clinical Biomechanics has been developed by research active clinical professionals to enhance your clinical practice by effectively applying mechanical principles in the management of pathology, human movement and gait dysfunction.
The course has been developed for individuals who possess Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS). It is accredited by the BPS and provides the first stage in the training process towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist. Module overview: You will study subject specific modules, such as Tissue Stress, Spinal Mechanics and Therapies using Biomechanical Principles, all chosen by you, to suit your clinical practice. You will also be able to embark on an innovative piece of research, giving you the opportunity to investigate problematic clinical conditions from a mechanical perspective. Modules are delivered on campus mainly during weekends with support study materials and discussions provided online. This enables you to build your studying into the working week, but also gives time between teaching for reflection and application of clinical knowledge and skills learnt. Graduate destinations: Graduates tend to be a diverse mix of clinical disciplines including podiatrists, physiotherapists, orthotists and chiropractors.

This module will focus on how diabetes affects biomechanics of the lower limb specifically the foot. While looking at the complications associated with the disease process, this course will focus on the impact of diabetes has on musculoskeletal problems and dysfunction as well as tissue viability. During this course, you will be able to investigate the modalities of footwear, orthoses and padding in the management of the diabetic foot and the effect these have on normal foot mechanics. You will also have the opportunity to investigate how diabetic complications influence locomotion which will be tested with in the Biomechanics and Gait Analysis Laboratory
You will study in detail the technology and equipment used for Gait Analysis with a strong emphasis on data capture, processing, analysis and interpretation. This course will give you hands on experience in using sophisticated Gait Analysis equipment including: an eighteen camera 3D optoelectronic system (Vicon) and related software analysis tool (visual 3D), four force plates (AMTI), an array of plantar pressure mats (1 and 3 metres) as well as in-shoe pressure systems, and EMG.
Module overview: In addition to studying detailed mechanics of the diabetic foot, you will also complete modules in critical appraisal skills and tissue stress. Modules include: • Critical Appraisal skills and Research Awareness In depth critical review of current research practice allows for a though provoking style of learning and enquiry. This module allows for current skills to be enhanced and built upon. • Tissue Stress You will assess the differing characteristics of human tissue and how they cope with mechanical stress. • Mechanics of the Diabetic foot The impact foot mechanics has on diabetic complications will be investigated with specific attention to assessment and management.
Module overview: Modules for this course will be taught by specialist lecturers in the field of Gait Analysis and the content will be informed by campus based research projects and expertise. In addition to studying in detail, the use of gait analysis equipment, you will also complete modules in critical appraisal skills and tissue stress. This will allow you to expand your evaluation of current research publications and investigate the mechanical principles around joint loading, musculoskeletal stress and tendon strain. Course outline: You’ll complete a project under expert supervision, exploring your topic and producing a thesis from your research. • MPhil (up to 40,000 words) • PhD (up to 80,000 words) As part of your research development, you may also complete a short course (the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods) to build up your knowledge and skills concerning the nature and practicalities of academic research. The Faculty of Health Sciences provides opportunities for research to MPhil and PhD level or MPhil with transfer to PhD. The route to your degree will give you a unique intellectual challenge and an opportunity to work on a project in-depth. • MPhil involves development of research skills and an extension of existing knowledge • PhD requires in-depth investigation of a topic and an original contribution to existing knowledge Graduate destinations: Our PhD and MPhil graduates enter a range of careers, with many continuing in academia.

Specialist facilities You will develop your skills through practical as well as academic learning. Our Skills Lab programme involves members of our Service User and Carers Group (SUCG) working with you on an individual basis to help you develop your telephone and face-to-face skills. We also have a skills lab equipped with video recording equipment and telephones. There’s a one-way mirror enabling staff and students to observe practice, and a recording suite where copies of interviews are made for you to take away and reflect on your practice. Our facilities at Stoke also include our Community House, which will help you ‘get the feel’ of working with someone in their ‘own home’ in ways that are more realistic than the classroom simulations.

MEET THE LECTURERS Miss Rachel Good Senior Lecturer: Social Work and Advice Studies Rachel Good began her career in health and social care in 1987, where she worked in a residential setting for older people. After graduating from the University of Wolverhampton in 1997 with a Diploma in Social Work, Rachel worked briefly as a Hospital Social Worker before pursuing her area of interest and securing a post with Coventry NHS Community Drug Team. During this time, she returned to Higher Education and graduated from Birmingham University with a B/Phil in Counselling. Rachel gained her academic experience as a Lecturer for a Staffordshire college, where she taught the Advanced Diploma in Counselling, Counselling Skills and Concepts and Access to Higher Education (Sociology and Study Skills). She joined Staffordshire University as Senior Lecturer in Social Work (Adults) and Advice Studies in May 2011.
Professor Tony Stewart Professor: Public Health An experienced NHS Consultant in Public Health, Professor Tony Stewart has worked in the health service since 1993. He has held senior level responsibility for many public health areas, including cervical and breast cancer screening, sexual health, eye services, maternity and perinatal mortality, health needs assessment, and research and development. Tony was Visiting Professor in Epidemiology at Staffordshire University before accepting his current role. He has strong links with the Faculty of Public Health, the Royal Society for Public Health and West Midlands Public Health Training Scheme and holds a number of Honorary Consultant posts. He has also published research papers and textbooks on clinical audit, medical statistics and epidemiology. Tony’s textbook Basic Statistics and Epidemiology won first prize in the 2011 BMA Medical Book Awards, Basis of Medicine category.

This course is designed for professional and other interested individuals working with or caring for older adults with mental health issues. It’s designed and operationalised with the skill and experience of an interprofessional / interagency curriculum team.
This course provides on-line access to materials and staff, so you can engage with studies at your convenience. Health Informatics is the multidisciplinary scientific field concerned with the acquisition, storage, retrieval, communication, and optimal use of health information for problem solving and decision-making.
