GOOD TIMES
IN GREAT PLACES Coming to university isn’t just about where you study and where you stay. It’s about getting to know your new surroundings, near and far. Our Centres of Excellence are both located in great towns, just an hour away from the city of Stoke-on-Trent. And because they’re in the centre of the country you also have easy access to London, other cities further north like Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds, as well as some fabulous surrounding countryside. But you don’t have to go that far to have fun. Here are just some of things you’ll be able to explore on your doorstep. Stafford The historic county town of Stafford offers students based at our Centre of Excellence at Blackheath Lane everything they might want on their doorstep. If you and your mates are out on the town, Casa, Couture and Revolution have all the right ingredients for a proper party night, or if you’re in the mood for live music
6
just head down to The Grapes. For daytime retail therapy there’s Guildhall Shopping Centre, and culture vultures have plenty of choice, including the Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford Castle and a new cinema which is coming soon.
Chiquito, Nando’s and Pizza Express. There’s also a Cineworld for when you need your blockbuster fix. The city centre has a great high street to explore too, and if you fancy going further afield there are markets six days a week in Newcastle-under- Lyme.
Shrewsbury Our Shrewsbury campus students have just as much to explore. With Shrewsbury Market, the Old Market Hall and Darwin Shopping Centre, you won’t be short of ways to treat yourself. And if you’re not in the mood for shopping, there are loads of great places to eat and drink, or soak up some culture. You’ve even got your own castle.
Days Out Take your mind off your studies with the thrilling and chilling rides at Alton Towers Resort, one of the UK’s best theme parks, where you’ll regularly find 2-for-1 student offers. Or you can save all your excitement for when V Festival comes around in the summer, one of the largest festivals in the country. For more regular entertainment, you can catch some Premier League football with Stoke City at the Bet 365 Stadium.
Treat Yourself If you want to travel further afield, Stoke-on-Trent has loads of great places to while away your free time. intu Potteries is a brand new leisure centre with high street shops, independent boutiques and all your favourite places to refuel, like Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Bon Pan Asian,
If you’re hankering for something more adventurous, why not travel to Trentham to meet the residents at the Monkey Forest? If that gets you in the mood for some highwire action, head for the High Ropes at Aerial Extreme round the corner, or Longton for some world class indoor climbing at Awesome Walls.
Getting Some Fresh Air If your brain needs a break and you feel like escaping the hustle and bustle, both Shrewsbury and Stafford have their own gorgeously green parks, or you could try Stafford Castle or Cannock Chase or a bit more adventure. And if you want some serious adventure, the Peak District is less than an hour away by car.

Skills labs and real-world environments Across the Faculty of Health Sciences we have five clinical skills laboratories, offering a safe environment to teach practical skills. Not only do they look identical to real-life hospital wards, they also provide students with the chance to use some of the most advanced equipment used in practice. By enhancing your confidence and ability in core clinical skills, we can improve your learning experience and patient safety.
DEDICATED FACILITIES,
BUILT AROUND YOU
All our students have access to our range of SimMan© mannequins. The robots can be programmed to have a range of medical conditions, from heart disease to constipation, high blood pressure to a racing pulse. Some even give birth! You’ll use them to learn everything from basic life support to naso-gastric tube insertion, in a safe, low risk environment.
We’re very proud of our dedicated Centres of Excellence, and it’s not hard to see why. Following our extensive investment all students based here are now trained using state-of-the-art technology in specially designed spaces for the ultimate immersive experience.
Paramedic students will also get to hone their skills in our very own training ambulance and fully-furnished ‘house’ environment. Working their way through medical scenarios, these facilities come complete with audio and video recorders, enabling our students to reflect on their performance for future development.
Our Library The heart of any place of study is the library, and the research facilities we now offer at Stafford and Shrewsbury are second to none. Equipped with outstanding spaces for private and collaborative group study, our libraries aren’t just about books. You’ll have access to a massive resource of journals and online information, all of it tailored to the needs of our healthcare students. As well as the most up to date books, publications, eResources, journals, specialist and rare materials, you’ll benefit from our experienced and friendly library staff. They can answer your IT queries, help you to access resources, show you how to research for your assignments and even help with referencing. Everything is designed to guide and support you throughout your studies, and help you on your way to success.

Social space Studying isn’t just about tuition, which is why our Centres of Excellence sites both have dedicated spaces for you to study and socialise. When you need a change of pace, you’ll find comfortable seating, eating areas, TVs, magazines and books.

THE PLACEMENT YOU WANT WITH THE SUPPORT YOU NEED
Victoria Talbot, BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing 2nd Year
Delivering healthcare as a Nurse, Midwife, Paramedic or Operating Department Practitioner requires the highest standards of training. That’s why fifty percent of your time will be spent working in ‘real life’ environments. Our practice placements take place in a diverse mix of locations and disciplines. Learning in such a wide range of contexts, from hospital wards and community settings to specialist units, will give you a great point of difference when applying for jobs.
Placements on offer in non-NHS settings are generally with charity, private or voluntary organisations, such as hospices and nursing homes. Paramedic students will get placements across West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, with some additional time inside the hospital to give you a broader knowledge of every aspect of the trust’s operations.
But as well as offering the widest breadth of placements available, we also offer the most supportive process possible including having your own mentor, who will be on hand to make sure every minute of your placement is as fulfilling as possible. The uniqueness of our placement circuit gives our students access to multiple NHS Hospital and Community Trusts, and non-NHS organisations across Shropshire and Staffordshire. These include: University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust South Staffordshire and Shropshire Mental Health Foundation NHS Trust Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Leighton Hospital

Thanks to a truly diverse range of partner organisations, every student will gain a wealth of different experiences and learning opportunities. Whatever your specialism, you’ll get to practice in a caring, compassionate, confident and competent manner, entering the job market with a clear edge over the competition. Your placement mentor Qualified mentors play a pivotal role in supporting our students in practice, as well as assessing you throughout that time. They will be responsible for planning and co-ordinating your whole learning experience, balancing the amount of direct supervision you require against independent learning. Wherever you live we can help advise and support you in your travel arrangements. We’ll even reimburse your mileage if the distance to your placement exceeds the distance you normally travel to your university base.

WHAT OUR
HEALTH STAFF SAY
WE KNOW ALL OUR STUDENTS BY NAME AND TRY AND TAILOR THEIR PROGRAMME IF THEY EVER STRUGGLE Traci Hudson, Lead Midwife for Education
“My teaching ethos is to try not to preach information at my students but to incorporate them in discussions, glean knowledge and expertise from them to enhance learning. I involve students in the structure of the session, providing some guided independence and ownership of their learning. I make sessions interactive, facilitating learning that is more encompassing and modern with the aim of engagement” Alexandra McNally, Lecturer in Health and Social Care and Community Nursing
“Students are supported in a variety of different ways, we operate an ‘open door’ policy in midwifery; however we are aware that time is precious to our students so we also offer other modes of support including email, Skype or even our excellent academic Facebook group. This level of support works, we know all of our students by name and try to tailor their programme if they are struggling.” Traci Hudson, Lead Midwife for Education
“Our operating theatre labs help simulate real-life clinical experiences students will encounter during their placement. We take them through every aspect of anaesthetic, surgical and post anaesthetic care, using advanced equipment such as surgical scrub sinks, surgical instruments, anaesthetic machines and 3G mannequins.”
IT GIVES ME GREAT SATISFACTION TO KNOW I HAVE BEEN PART OF THE STUDENTS’ JOURNEY, SEEING THEM GROW AND DEVELOP INTO CONFIDENT, CARING PROFESSIONALS Karen Griffiths - Senior Lecturer Children’s Nursing
Angela Woolliscroft Lecturer in Operating Department Practice
“Having relevant clinical experience from previous employment provides credibility to the course, and enables me to tailor student learning experiences giving them an insight into what they may encounter during clinical practice.” Mark Garratt, Senior Lecturer Paramedic Science

FEES From 1 August 2017 new students in England on most nursing, midwifery and allied health professional pre-registration courses will have access to the standard student support package of tuition fee loans and support for living costs, rather than getting an NHS grant. Although this means that students will now need to cover the cost of their course, there will be additional spaces available at Staffordshire University, giving you a higher chance of securing a place! Lots of people worry about whether university is affordable. It’s important to know that you don’t have to pay money upfront: tuition and living cost loans work like a tax on earnings above a certain amount and aren’t like a commercial or payday loan. So if you want to go to university you can afford to go. At Staffordshire University, we believe Higher Education should be open to anyone and everyone - people with a range of experiences and from diverse backgrounds. So it makes sense that there are different ways to help fund it all. From student loans to grants that you don’t have to pay back, there are options available. Tuition Fee Loan This is a loan provided by the Government to cover the cost of your tuition. There’s no credit check involved - as long as you’re studying towards your first degree, you’ll be eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan. This means that you don’t have to find the money to pay for your tuition costs before or during your course. Maintenance Loan Also available from the Government, a Maintenance Loan helps cover the cost of living while you study. Things like accommodation, food, travel and course materials. You have to apply for this loan and the amount you get is based on where you live, what you study and your household income. As well as loans that you’ll have to pay back once you leave university, other non-repayable financial support might be available to help with the cost of living while you study. Special Support Grants The Special Support Grant is specifically for students who have extra requirements. So if you’re a single parent, have disabilities or are affected by other special circumstances, then this kind of grant is for you. Any funding received through a Special Support Grant won’t affect how much Maintenance Loan you’re entitled to. For further information on the funding changes expected within the healthcare sector, make sure you look at the independent advice available at www.thefundingclinic.org.uk before you make a decision.

UCAS POINTS AND WHAT THEY MEAN
There are several different ways to study at Staffordshire University. But with so many different qualifications available, it’s important to have one scale to measure them against. That’s where UCAS points come in.
UCAS are currently changing the way their tariff points system works. The new tariff points will apply to you if you’re currently in Year 12 or S5 in Scotland (or younger), and are thinking about applying to start uni or college in September 2017.
The UCAS tariff converts the grades you achieve in exams into points. That way when it comes to the assessment and application process a wide range of qualifications can be compared and considered. For some courses, specific subjects and grades – rather than just points – may also be required.
There are a few different tables here to help you see how your grades convert into UCAS points, so you can start working out exactly what you need to open the door to your future. For all the latest UCAS conversion information, visit www.staffs.ac.uk/ugentryrequirements

BSc (Hons) NURSING PRACTICE (CHILD)
COURSE OUTLINE
MODULE OVERVIEW
COURSE OUTLINE
Nursing Practice (Adult) degree is delivered over an extended academic year of 45 weeks with 50% based in clinical practice across a variety of hospital and community settings.
Year 1 (Core) • Professional Values, Attitudes and Behaviour • Evidence in Contemporary Health Care • Clinical Skills for Nursing • Adult Nursing Practice
Our Nursing Practice (Child) degree will give you the chance to work with children and their families in a variety of healthcare settings. It’s ideal if you want to gain an academic qualification that will make you eligible to register as a children’s nurse.
It’s ideal if you want an internationallyrecognised nursing qualification to work in the UK or abroad. You’ll be required to travel to placements in various locations and work shifts across the 24-hour period to gain the full range of learning experiences. Adult nursing is concerned with the care of people over 18. Your work could range from providing care during a time of sudden or severe illness, to helping someone manage an illness they’ll live with for the rest of their life. It could also involve promoting good health within the community, as well as hospitals.
Year 2 (Core) • Evidence-based Nursing Practice Skills • Care of the Older Adult • Community-based Care • Developing Adult Nursing Practice Year 3 (Core) • Competent Adult Nursing Care • The Graduate Nurse (Adult Field)
You’ll get to experience a range of clinical placements in the community, in acute settings and the independent sector. You’ll be prepared to enter a rewarding, challenging and fulfilling career, with the opportunity for lifelong-learning and further development.
From day one, you’ll focus your chosen field of nursing and you’ll start to develop the essential care skills you need. You’ll integrate theory with practice by completing a variety of clinical placements. As you progress through the course, you’ll gain more skills and knowledge, and upon graduation be eligible to register as an Adult Nurse. Employment opportunities for nurses are varied and exciting. Our graduates find employment with a range of local and national employers in both the NHS and independent sectors, while others find opportunities abroad. An interview, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and occupational health screening form part of our selection process. FdSc PARAMEDIC SCIENCE PRE-REGISTRATION PROGRAMME COURSE OUTLINE
MODULE OVERVIEW
Paramedics play an essential role in the delivery of patient care in the complex and dynamic pre-hospital care environment. The role requires the application of potentially life-saving clinical skills and the administration of drugs to support the physiological status of patients. This will often need to be achieved under emergency conditions and with patients from across the age spectrum who may be suffering from a variety of medical problems and/or traumatic injuries.
Year 1 (Core) Direct entry only • Introduction to Biological Sciences and Pharmacology for Paramedic Practice • Foundations for Paramedic Practice • Communication and Professional Issues for Paramedic Practice • Introduction to Clinical Skills for Paramedic Practice
As an expanding area of the NHS, new Paramedic roles and responsibilities are constantly being introduced with excellent employment and career prospects. Understanding pre-hospital care and related issues requires an appreciation of the interrelationship of a number of theoretical perspectives including those arising from the disciplines of philosophy, social sciences, humanities and the life sciences. Therefore this course incorporates key areas of biological sciences; health and social policy; behavioural sciences; legal, ethical and professional issues, and research and evaluation. Whilst a proportion of the course is devoted to essential underpinning theoretical principles, much of the time will be focused upon allowing you to practice the clinical skills you will learn within the safety of dedicated skills-labs, Staffordshire University’s fully kitted ambulance, and problem-based scenarios which are set within a variety of simulated settings (including a converted and furnished house which is fitted with video and audio facilities for training purposes). Whilst at university you will be taught by experienced paramedics and other pre-hospital educators – many of whom have had their work published in educational and paramedic related journals. You will also spend half of your time within the pre-hospital practice environment, linked to a paramedic mentor, who will guide and facilitate your development. Other placement opportunities are also available.
Year 2 (Core) • Direct Entry and Professional Pathway • Pathophysiology and Pharmacology for Paramedic Practice • Evidence-base Practice – Paramedic Science • Clinical Skills for Paramedic Practice • Professional Paramedic Practice
I LOVE THE UNPREDICTABILITY OF THE JOB. ITS NOT 9-5 AND NO TWO DAYS ARE EVER THE SAME. BEING A STUDENT PARAMEDIC YOU RELY ON YOUR RELATIONSHIPS TO GET YOU THROUGH THE BAD TIMES. WHETHER ITS YOUR LECTURERS OR YOUR CREW, THERE’S ALWAYS SOMEONE THERE TO TALK TO Charlotte Fern, Paramedic Science FdSc, 2nd Year.
GRADUATE DESTINATIONS
This award meets the statutory requirements for paramedic education, and its successful completion enables you to apply for Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration. Graduates can apply for employment within any NHS or private pre-hospital organisation. HCPC registration means you can use the protected title ‘Paramedic’ and will allow you to apply for a job with any Ambulance Service or private organisation within the UK. Opportunities to work abroad may also be available.
