One of the top Psychology departments in the UK “The main reason I applied to study Psychology at Staffordshire University was because of its reputation. As the University has one of the top Psychology departments in the UK, I felt it would provide me with a great experience and foundation of Psychology. The facilities were also a huge factor, and I felt Staffordshire was the best option for me.

During my course, I was always able to ask questions and receive good advice. Regarding the lectures, each member of staff had a different approach on how to deliver the content of the course, and the supplementary seminars were very good for reinforcing lecture topics. A number of the modules I studied assisted my career – for example, learning about human social and cognitive development. I have subsequently used many of the skills learnt from my degree in my work, including analytical thinking, problem solving and mathematical skills. I now work within HR, where one of my roles involves dealing with high volume recruitment of staff. Really had the wow factor “I was so impressed by the quality of the teaching and the facilities at Staffordshire University that I put the University as both my first and second choice on the UCAS form. As you’d expect, I visited a number of universities when looking for the right place to study my degree. But it was Staffordshire that really had the wow factor. The lecturers weren’t just friendly and knowledgeable. They were genuinely interested in me, as well as my plans for the future.

The facilities were first-rate and it seemed as though there would also be a whole range of opportunities to help me succeed. Throughout my time at Staffordshire University, the teaching and support have been superb. The lecturers know how to bring learning to life and are always available to help and advise. Forensic psychology is concerned with understanding human behaviour and its underlying thoughts, feelings and motivations, with particular reference to criminal behaviour. It enables you to begin to understand psychological perspectives on the nature of criminality and the investigation of crime and to consider the roles of forensic science and psychology in the Criminal Justice System. Many of the graduates of the British Psychological Society accredited degree have been very successful after completing the course. They pursue careers in the Police, the Probation Service, Prison Service and Home Office. A number have become professional psychologists in the area of Forensic Psychology.

Taking the BSc in PE and Youth Sport Coaching will prepare you for a career in teaching, professional coaching, health and fitness and sports development. Although a relatively new course, graduates on our similar awards have gained posts in areas such as athletics development, football coaching, teaching, lecturing and sports development.

If you were passionate about physical education at school or college, this course offers an opportunity to continue the practical and academic approach to degree level. Practical performance and the development of coaching and teaching skills are central to the course. Typically, 60 per cent of Sport and Exercise students gain posts within the sport industry, while around 30 per cent move on to teacher training. The course allows you to explore and develop your own personal performance in a range of sport and physical activity areas while nurturing your teaching and coaching skills. On the practical side, opportunities exist to pursue racquet sports, athletics, swimming and a range of team games in Year 1. Gymnastics, dance and adventure activities are also pursued in Year 1. Teaching and coaching skills initiated in Year 1 are practised and studied further in Years 2 and 3, where coaching and teaching placements are core. Throughout the course, the focus is on performance, teaching and coaching, supported by exploring the scientific and social aspects of sport. For example, topics covered include physical education, sport psychology, contemporary issues in sport coaching, inspiring learning, and sport development.

Graduates of our British Psychological Society accredited degree are able to analyse problems, use computer skills and design investigations and are especially aware of human relationships. If you want to find out about the ways in which children grow, behave and mature, then this course may be for you. You will develop the expertise to collect and assess evidence about human behaviour, including children’s behaviour and will be encouraged to develop problem solving, analytical, reflective, communication and interpersonal skills. Opportunities are available in a wide variety of organisations, including teaching, welfare, health, caring and guidance professions.

This course combines the study of key areas of Psychology with the application of psychological research to counselling theory and practice. It also explores some of the relevant issues facing individuals in our contemporary world. Sports development is an important and rapidly expanding area of employment. General issues related to the broad field of sports studies are introduced and the policy and practice of sports development and coaching are examined. The course shares a common programme in Year 1 with other sports-related BA(Hons) courses and the broad range of compulsory material provides you with the foundation skills and knowledge required for development and specialisation at later levels. The flexibility of this course allows you to change degree route to the BA(Hons) Sport Studies award at the end of Year 1.
