OUR BRILLIANT PEOPLE

Dr. Martin Turner studied at Staffordshire University for a period of 9 years, and is now a member of the Sport and Exercise teaching team. Martin completed his BSc in Sports Studies in 2007 with a 1st class degree, under the guidance of many staff that still remain here. Having arrived at the University with an average academic record, the support Martin received on his course led him to record one of the highest grades in his year, which allowed him to pursue a Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology. His BSc degree meant he had the grounding for further academic study, and forged a career in Sport and Exercise Psychology investigating the psychophysiology of performance under pressure. Now, Martin teaches on the modules he once studied, and enjoys helping students to pursue their careers as he did. In his teaching, Martin uses new and emerging technologies such as Video Lectures and Smartphone interaction to maximise the learning environment. His modules focus on the use of psychology in applied settings such as elite sport, giving students an insight into the real world of sport and exercise psychology. This involves getting students involved in hand-on practical sports hall sessions to test the effects of psychology on sport and exercise performance. Martin has worked with the England and Wales Cricket Board measuring elite cricketers’ pressure performance, and the FA England Futsal Team, working with the players at training camps at St. Georges Park and traveling with the team world-wide to competitions. Martin received the British Psychological Society (BPS) Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology (DSEP) Award for best PhD Thesis in 2013. Martin is also a BPS Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist, meaning he can work with athletes applying psychology to sport and exercise performance. Martin is a published author, whose work has been featured on Forbes.com and in The Psychologist, the main publication of the BPS. Dr Martin Turner Lecturer Sport & Exercise Psychology

I enjoyed learning something new every seminar and every lecture during my time at University which was going to become part of my future career. Meeting new people whether it’s in your group or further a field in the faculty, they become your closest friends. I liked the size of the University. It’s not too big, everything you need is there and it’s a friendly campus. The brand new facilities within the health faculty really helped with the Sports Therapy course especially the Sports Therapy Lab, Biomechanics Lab I worked at Market Drayton Town FC during my 3rd year placement alongside my supervisor. They kept me on throughout preseason as their Sports Therapist. I was then offered an interview at Oswestry Rugby Club. The director found my profile on linked in. I was given the job on the spot and joined the club in the July after graduating with the position of Head Sports Therapist for the 1st and 2nd teams. I was recently appointed North Midlands RFU’s senior women’s assistant Sports Therapist. I also run my own mobile massage business in Shrewsbury and Oswestry. Charlotte Beard BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy The knowledge and skills I have acquired whilst working towards my degree in sports development and coaching has considerably helped my progression as a young academic whilst at Staffordshire University. My current understanding and interest of sport has formed a solid foundation for which I can build the skills and knowledge I specifically need within the sporting industry. Overall, the employability skills I have established whilst on the course have qualified me to add value to a sporting organisation. Consequently, the course has permitted me to developed new extensive experiences within sport and has gained advanced workplace skills in people development and presenting. A BETTER CAMPUS

AT STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, WE’RE COMMITTED TO INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE – LITERALLY. OVER A PERIOD OF 18 MONTHS, WE’RE SPENDING MILLIONS OF POUNDS ON OUR UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES, SO WHEN YOU JOIN US, YOU’LL BE COMING TO A PLACE WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START OPENING DOORS AND BREAKING BOUNDARIES.

In recent years, our Stoke-on-Trent campus has undergone a massive transformation, with the students at the heart of our plans. From the amazing Science Centre to environmental improvements, we’re focused on building the best campus for our students. But whilst it’s all well and good a university saying they care what students think, we’re putting our money where our mouth is. This all stems from a decision to make Stoke-on-Trent the main campus of Staffordshire University. In 2016 the majority of students from our Stafford Computing and Technology courses will be

10

moving to the Stoke-on-Trent campus. So we’re making sure that when you arrive, you enter a university that is fit for purpose. One with a great mix of study and social spaces. One that feels safe and thrives on the friendly reputation we’ve built. What we found was that a modern edge-of-city campus is ideal. Close enough to the city for the social life, but far enough away to focus on studying. Great transport links around the city, but also great spaces around the campus. The best of both worlds. So, starting in Summer 2015, we’ll be working on the College Road and Leek Road sites of our Stoke Campus. We’ll be creating great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, venues and teaching rooms. Bringing the best teaching facilities together with fantastic student areas – making it feel safe and easy to jump between your lectures and your life outside University. As well as that, we’re also investing £12m in a new Computing and Games facility. This project, called Digital Kiln, will merge beautiful learning space with state-of-theart technology to support all sorts of courses from Cyber Security to Games Design.

This investment is continuing the work we’ve already started to create great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, halls of residence, and other facilities. We’ve committed to doubling the investment that’s already started to create enhanced facilities. Come 2016, it’s going to have the buzz and the feel of the edge-of-city campus that students want. Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Gunn Healthcare Centres of Excellence This redevelopment work isn’t just happening in Stoke-on-Trent though. Healthcare and Midwifery students won’t miss out with significant further investment in our Centres of Excellence in Stafford and Shrewsbury – adding new student spaces and learning resources to make these campuses totally self-contained and right up to date. So, with all this to come, maybe it’s time you joined us at Staffordshire University?
