Appitized Business Staffordshire is the franchise partner of multi-award-winning UK app development company Appitized, delivering iOS and Android apps to small businesses at a fixed low monthly cost. Having built over 300 small business apps for businesses we understand the type of features and functionality that customers expect your business app to have! Most importantly, if a customer visits your website you are unable to contact them directly, with an app you can engage 24/7. Finally, our customizable mobile apps allow you to STAND OUT from the crowd. The mobile app market is growing rapidly, so why not jump ahead of the competition in your local area?
Managing your app Why an App? It is important for businesses to appreciate that an effective mobile strategy involves more than just a mobile-friendly website. According to a study by Ofcom last year, Britons are spending over two hours a day on their mobile device. Therefore, once it is downloaded your brand is placed on consumers’ devices and users are being constantly reminded that your brand still exists. Having your own app for your business will help to: - Improve brand awareness as more people can find you. - Build relationships with customers and understand their needs. - Gain more credibility because people will expect companies to have an app.
Other benefits One of the most important benefits of a mobile app is the increased customer loyalty it can generate. From billboards to email marketing and everything in between, a mobile app connects consumers differently and more sincerely than other forms of advertising, as it delivers the brand directly at the customer’s fingertips. A mobile app creates your own direct marketing channel. With features and functions such as booking forms, pricing information, search functions, user accounts, messengers, news feeds and customer focused loyalty schemes. If your business already has a loyalty scheme, why not transfer this to a digital version via the mobile app? Not only will this increase more downloads, but it will also increase the number of returning customers! Another benefit of having your own app is the use of push notifications, this enables you to constantly remind users about your products, services and offers, thereby increasing potential sales and profits. 4
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2016
Your app will be designed and built by our bespoke awardwinning apps development team, and you can update your app from anywhere with an internet connection using the cloud-based app management system. This means you can change opening hours, announce special offers, add new services, share news, and much more, wherever and whenever you need to. Your app also comes complete with the tools you need to develop and maintain relationships with your customers, leaving you more time to concentrate on running your business, and delivering your products or services.
Creating your app We do it all for you, from the design and functionality of your app, through to app store submission and approval. Appitized Business Staffordshire will take care of everything. Our apps are designed and developed to work on iOS and Android devices, and are available to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Pricing It is a common misconception that acquiring your own app for your business is going to be too expensive, with significant upfront costs. This is not the case at Appitized Business Staffordshire, our business app solution has 20 (and counting) ready to go rich features and can be available to your business starting from just

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted
up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when
we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the
personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

CHASE ARTS FOR PUBLIC SPACES [CHAPS] PHASE 4 WILL BE ADDED TO THE MEMORIAL The Memorial commemorating the Cannock Chase Coalfields and located in Hednesford Town Centre currently has the names of over 3,600 people who were involved with pits in the area. The first phase was erected in 2006 with phases 2 and 3 added in 2012 and 2014. The memorial has been the focus of considerable attention and interest, both by those who had named bricks included and by many others who have an interest in the mining industry upon which our community was built and the committee of CHAPS continue to receive requests for named bricks. CHAPS is delighted to announce that a further phase - phase 4 - will be added to the memorial. This is to be the final addition of named bricks to the memorial - there will be no opportunity for additions once this phase closes. They propose that work on the project will commence in October 2016, therefore it is the Committee’s decision that a closing date for receipt of completed applications will be August 31st 2016 after which no further requests will be accepted. The mining memorial has the full backing and support of Hednesford Town Council and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust. Further bricks will be laid around the grass areas which surround the clock in front of Anglesey Lodge and will form part of the overall memorial which has a huge Davy Lamp as its focus. Anyone wishing to obtain application forms for named bricks, which will cost £25.00 each, should contact Trish Mellor, Secretary of CHAPS. The address for written correspondence is 52, Hatherton Road, Cannock, Staffs, WS11 1HQ, the phone number to use is 07583 655199. CHAPS can be contacted by email: trishmellor@yahoo. co.uk to request an application form or the form can be downloaded from the website: www.chaseartsforpublicspaces.co.uk

Hardy sages for the flower garden Part 2. LETS GET EXOTIC WITH ORNAMENTAL SAGES
This time last year I wrote about the hardiest ornamental sages that come from Europe. This time it’s the turn of their more exotic looking cousins from Central and South America. Many of these are also hardy in our winters but you need to take some care in selecting varieties as there are also lots of tender ones that need to be taken indoors in winter. The hardy types have become a mainstay of my garden because they bloom for so long and attract lots of bees. Among the toughest is Salvia macrophylla which forms a woody, upright shrub about 2ft (60cm) tall and has wrinkly leaves and brightly coloured flowers from June through to October. The best of these is “Pink Blush” with masses of vivid pink flowers that just won’t be ignored! Salvia microphylla is equally as tough and is known as Blackcurrant Sage – just rub a leaf and smell to discover why. These grow to a more domed, eventually sprawling shrub about 2ft (60cm) tall. There are lots of lovely colours available. “Hot Lips” is very popular at the moment; these has red-lipped, white flowers in summer. In cooler weather the flowers may be all white or even all red. One of my favourites is “Trelissick Creamy Yellow” with her pale yellow flowers that have a hint of warm pink at their necks. Salvia “Icing Sugar” is even smaller at 1ft (30cm) tall and is clothed with delightful twotone pink flowers throughout the summer.
New to the garden is “Wendy’s Wish”. The large, tubular pink flowers and arching stems make it ideal for a sheltered spot at the front of the border. All of these types need some sun and will survive the winter in a well28
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2016
drained soil. If you have a wet soil in winter then they make ideal plants for patio pots, but remember to keep the pots somewhere out of heavy frost in winter. All are best pruned back in spring to a nice shape to stop them getting too leggy. Anise Sage (Salvia guaranitica) grows from a tuber in much the same way as a Dahlia and it can be treated like a Dahlia: if you leave your Dahlia tubers in the ground over winter you can do the same with these tuberous Sages, otherwise dig them up in early winter and pot them up and keep them in a porch or cold greenhouse until early spring when you can start watering them again. If you leave them in the ground don’t be surprised if you don’t see any growth until late April or early May. The hardiest varieties are “Blue Enigma” and “Black and Blue”.
For something really different and impressive why not give Bolivian Sage (Salvia atrocyanea) a try? But remember to give it ample space as it will grow to about 6-7 feet (2 metres) tall and its long, arching stems will be clothed in dramatic blue flowers from August onwards. It is completely herbaceous – that is it dies down every winter and comes back up again from underground each spring. It is completely hardy in well-drained soil. I’ve only scratched the surface of the wonderful world of ornamental sages there are literally thousands of species and varieties out there waiting for a home in your garden. Restaurant Review
Indian Cuisine Situated in the countryside in a beautiful barn conversion in Featherstone near Wolverhampton, The King’s Repose is a high quality and highly recommended Indian restaurant. With hosts Lee, Misbah and Monseur who have ran the successful restaurant since 1996, it is no wonder that they have many returning customers and new customers week in week out. They were awarded again in 2016 a five star rating from ‘ Rate My Place’ which is a prestigious award, awarded by the local council for the outstanding achievement and contribution to the pursuit of excellent food and service which monitors food hygiene and general standards. Using only the best ingredients with a wonderful combination of subtle flavours and tastes, blending fragrant and exotic spices from the Indian continent. Each dish at The King’s Repose has its own individual flavour and aroma from the herbs and spices specially prepared by the Master Chef Misbah. This evening my partner and I were delighted to be returning to the award winning, King’s Repose in Featherstone. After parking on the free secure car park to the front of the restaurant we stepped out of the car and could immediately smell the beautiful aromas.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2016
We were greeted at the entrance by Monsieur who remembered us from our previous visit and were taken through to the bar area where we both ordered a Cobra beer each and began to peruse the menu. With so many tempting dishes to choose from we didn’t know where to begin. For our starters we decided on samosa and vegetable Bengali stuffed rolls along with poppadums and dips. For our mains we opted for a South Indian Garlic Chilli Murgh - Barbecued chicken pieces cooked in fresh garlic & chilli sauce with fresh coriander & green chilli (£8.95) and also a Chingri Sagwala - King prawns, cooked in herbs & spices, garnished with green chillies (£14.95), to accompany our mains we also ordered pilau rice and a peshwari naan to share. Once our order was completed we were taken upstairs in the restaurant Open to a lovely table in from 5.30pm front of the huge arched window overlooking the grounds.
Once we were settled our starters arrived and we were both very pleased. Both dishes had great flavours and fresh ingredients and were finished rather quickly!

Our main courses were presented shortly after and looked delicious. We shared each of the dishes and both were beautifully cooked and generous in proportion. The famous Kings Repose King Prawns were huge(7days and so tasty. Again these dishes were Midnight a week) polished off in no time.

The range includes hypoallergenic waxes, moisturising natural waxes, strip and non-strip waxes, scented and unscented. The waxes are perfect for both male and female waxing treatments including intimate waxing. We use non-strip waxing in the salon specifically for intimate hair removal as the waxes literally shrink wrap the hair, removing the entire hair with its roots from the follicle, leaving the skin undamaged. Since the wax sticks to the hair and not the skin it takes the smack like sting out of the process you get with strip waxing hair removal. We have found regular waxing with this method weakens and slows 42

Staffordshire Firefighter Saves A Man’s Life COMMENDATION AWARDED FOR POTENTIALLY LIFE-SAVING ACTIONS A Staffordshire firefighter whose actions potentially saved a man’s life has received a certificate of commendation from the Service. On February 7, 2016 Firefighter Tim Anslow, who is based at Chase Terrace Community Fire Station, went to the aid of a man who had been involved in a road traffic collision, as Tim travelled home from work. Tim recognised that the man was bleeding seriously and used a friend’s belt to tie around the man’s legs to control loss of blood. Tim kept the gentleman warm and conscious whilst waiting for the emergency services to arrive. The hospital informed the casualty that Tim’s action’s saved his life.

Cannock’s Most Improved Young Sports person WINNER ANNOUNCED Last month Cannock Shopping Centre launched its Most Improved Young Sportsperson competition, which called out for Cannock residents to nominate a young person who they thought deserved recognition for the improvement they have made in their sport. After many nominations and lots of deliberation, Cannock Shopping Centre is delighted to announce that 15-year-old tennis player Jake Smith has been chosen as the winner. Jake was nominated by his tennis coach, Chris Perrin, as he thought the progress Jake had made in the short time he had been playing the sport was phenomenal. Commenting on his nomination, Chris said: “Jake only started playing tennis when he first joined Cheslyn Hay Tennis Club in 2013 and since then has progressed immensely. Jake is now playing in County League competitions and even entered a few adult competitions, which is fantastic. In 2014 Jake ranked 102nd in Staffordshire and now he is ranked just 15th! I am delighted Jake has been chosen as the winner as his enthusiasm and talent for tennis is outstanding.’

Natal Chapman, Centre Manager of Cannock Shopping Centre, commented: “Congratulations to Jake, he certainly deserves it. We received some fantastic entries and I was blown away by the amount of young talented people there are in the area. We chose Jake as it’s obvious he has a very special skill for tennis and we hope that this award will push him further to succeed.” Pictured: Linda Hopkins from Cannock Shopping Centre presenting Jake Smith with his prizes

SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT FEEL GOOD LOOK GOOD EVENT Cannock Soroptimists held a very successful Feel Good Look Good event. Around 50 women went along and enjoyed talking to the many stall holders representing various organisations connected with women’s health, all concerned with helping women to feel better about themselves and with ways to look after themselves.
Midland Chase Inspirational Woman competition, explained that her service will soon be available for two days every week at Stafford Hospital, an extension of the salon currently at Stoke Hospital. Like LGFB, her service gives an enormous confidence boost to women at a time when they have little self confidence. More information is available at www. uhnmcharity.org.uk
President Carole Holdcroft welcomed everyone, including SI Midland Chase Region President Alyson Green and Amanda Milling, MP for Cannock Chase. She also thanked Cannock Lions for sponsoring the event. The first speaker was one of SI Cannock’s newer and younger members Kate Young - who told the audience a little about herself, about Soroptimists and about her reasons, as a busy woman working full time, for joining the international organisation. She explained that it is the balance between working on projects which support those women less fortunate than us: whether involved in domestic abuse, trafficking, needing help to develop skills to become independent or self sufficient, with the social side of Soroptimism - the fun and friendship - which appealed to her initially and which still appeals to her.
Kathy Coe, founder of Pathway, then spoke a little of the many ways they provide support to women victims of Domestic Violence. Their service has developed so much over the 22 years since it began: last year they gave direct help to 37 women in the Cannock area alone. Kathy introduced a woman who has been a client of Pathway and who now works with them supporting other women. She told the audience her story and it was very powerful, enabling others to understand a little of the way a victim of DV can feel. She said that the bravest thing she ever did was to make that first step and call the help line - and although it has been a long process she has never looked back. The 24 hour help line number is 01543 676800. Alison Jackson of the worldwide charity Look Good Feel Better for cancer patients spoke of the free beauty workshops provided locally at New Cross and Stafford Hospitals. Cosmetics are donated by some of the large beauty houses and each woman who goes along to a workshop not only receives help and advice but also a bag of beauty goods valued at around £200. Anyone interested in knowing more can phone LGFB on 01372 747500. Fiona Ford, who founded Fresh Hair, a bespoke wig fitting service for cancer patients and who is a past winner of SI 48

Vicky Farmer, nutrition advisor, dispelled some of the myths about our diet. We need to maintain a balanced diet which includes carbohydrates, fats, fibre and protein - cutting anything out completely can bring its own problems. The evening gave the opportunity to talk to a colour analyst, nail technician, breast care specialist, podiatrist and staff from St Giles Hospice as well as the speakers. There was a free prize draw and one lucky woman won a basket packed with pamper goodies. There was a great ‘buzz’ with everyone finding the evening informative and interesting an added bonus for Cannock Soroptimists is that a number of the ladies are keen to come along to a meeting and find out more about the club and the organisation. July THE MONTH OF CONTENTMENT AND INDEPENDENCE The month of July was named after Julius Caesar by a decision of the Roman Senate in 44BC as July was the month of his birth, before that it had been known as Quintilis (fifth) as it was the fifth month in the old calendar. In the Julian and then Gregorian calendars it became the seventh month of the year. Some quite interesting facts about July: July’s birthstone is the ruby, which is said to symbolise contentment, the birth flowers are the Larkspur or the Water Lily and the zodiac signs are Cancer or Leo In Anglo Saxon times names for the month included: Heymonath (Hay month) and Maed Monath (Meadow Month). July starts on the same weekday as April every year. Seven US presidents have died in July, which is more than any other month. In America it is Baked Beans Month, Ice Cream Month, Hot Dog Month and Blueberries Month – that’s lunch sorted! There are many varied days of celebration in July; one of the most famous being the Fourth of July Independence Day in the USA, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire. However, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776 At the Chase CACI Clinic we are here to increase your levels of contentment and independence. The treatments we offer all contribute to a positive and healthy outlook on life. When we know we look our best it can give increased confidence. Our combination therapies help reduce lines, increase collagen production and give a healthy glow to the skin. The CACI Quantum machine can, in addition, help to tone and firm thighs, buttocks and stomachs. The Heaven Bee Venom products are producing wonderful outcomes. We are excited to have been one of the first clinics to offer the latest Heaven treatment: the ‘Heaven Bee Peel’. This is an advanced variable and progressive treatment equivalent to an 18% Glycolic Peel, in other words a

light chemical peel. The difference is that naturally occurring bee venom is being used to produce the results. Both Pam and Becky are delighted with the results and are using the peel themselves. We are also delighted with the results that we are achieving with the ‘Fillerina’; a topical non - invasive filler. It works by using a syringe to apply the product directly into the lines that the client wishes to be reduced. Excellent results are being observed when using it for ‘lip plumps’. Below is an extract from ‘The Mail on Sunday’ after an investigator had completed a course of Fillerina: For an independent opinion, I had my skin assessed before and after at the Santi Skin Lab in South Kensington, Central London (santilondon.com). Staff used a Cortex machine, state-of-the-art skin analysis equipment which is used in dermatological research worldwide. I thought my skin was looking good, but what the Cortex machine told me was little short of amazing. ‘There is a remarkable change in skin structure,’ said Tariq Karim, director of Santi Skin Lab. ‘The skin on the forehead shows a considerable improvement.’ The hydration level of my skin increased by a huge 29 per cent from the starting point. Sue Starr Hypnotherapy COMMITMENT FACILITATES LONG LASTING CHANGE RATHER THAN A TEMPORARY FIX “Throughout the last year, my client base has continued to increase. Clinical Hypnotherapy continues to develop credibility as a leading alternative therapy and features in many media stories mostly for the right reasons! Our point of difference is that we include more behavioural tools, such as CBT and NLP, alongside Hypnotherapy to support clients in achieving their personal goals”. Sue Starr Hypnotherapy has over the last 3 years established itself as a leading practice in South Staffordshire. Sue continues “Teenagers and young children (as young as 6) are an increasing part of my client base; they tend to be great fun to work with and engage really well with therapy. The diversity of issues faced can range from low confidence, anxieties, exam pressures and bullying. GP and school referrals for this continue to highlight a broader shortage in support for young people where quick response is essential” As well as the regular client base, last summer saw an increase in people wanting Hypnotherapy prior to weddings. Best Man speeches, Bride confidence and self-esteem concerns have so far been supported by Sue, “Weddings are supposed to be the best day of a couples lives, however, this pressure of being in the spotlight, organising so much and wanting it to be perfect can be overwhelming. We help with the mindset so that the big day can be fully enjoyed by confident, in control Brides,
Grooms and the Best Man!” The most important thing is that a client really wants a beneficial change for themselves and that they are committed to making a change. Expecting a magic wand result with no hard work or challenges is not the case with Hypnotherapy. “Many people nowadays want quick fixes with no effort; Hypnotherapy requires dedication from the client to bring about change. But combining Hypnotherapy and client commitment facilitates long lasting change rather than a temporary fix!” Sue Starr Dip Hyp, DNLP, GQHP, GHRreg is a fully qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and is registered with the General Hypnotherapy Register, General Hypnotherapy Standards Council, and the NHS recognised Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council. Hednesford Lions LIONS FULLY FORMED Hednesford Centennial Lions Club are proud to announce that, as of the 13th of May 2016, they are now recognised as an independent Lions Club as part of Lions International. Hednesford Lions formed 3 years ago as a branch of Cannock Lions club. Since their humble begins as a handful of likeminded people they have worked to find ways to best serve their local community. From litter picking to hosting their own annual charity events the club has grown in strength and numbers helping them to take on ever more ambitious projects and be ready to act quickly to help those in need. Over a relatively short period the club have endeavoured to build good relationships within the community and work closely with other groups to assist in local events such as games in the park, Christmas celebrations in the high street and collections for the Foodbank. They have supported those in need wherever possible, and strived to help other charitable organisations through a range of activities such as fundraising and marshalling. Hednesford Lions also host their own annual events. The largest of which is an afternoon tea based on themes which have so far ranged from the Blitz to the Ritz involving tea, bingo and live entertainment, bringing the communities elderly members together. An event that continues to grow in popularity year on year.
At the start of 2016 the club had attracted over 20 members and could officially be recognised as an independent Lions club. On the 13th of May 2016 the club hosted a range of guests from fellow clubs and dignitaries from across the area at the Aquarius ballroom to witness the official charter. An act that sees the club proudly standalone from mother club Cannock and continue their work as Hednesford Centennial Lions Club independently.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2016
Lions Wendy Yates and Jackie Trusler led over 100 guests and dignitaries light-heartedly through the formalities of the evening with presentations from Deputy Lieutenant Miss Sarah Elson, Amanda Milling MP and District Governor Chris Aked. Hednesford Lions also took the opportunity to award Katy Ankers with an outstanding citizenship award. All those in attendance had a great night with good company, food and drink and look forward to the next celebration of this big step in the clubs history next year.
What is a Lions Club? Lions are ordinary people who do extraordinary things to help others and support good causes. They have 17,000 active members belonging to 900 local clubs throughout the British Isles and Ireland. Globally they have more volunteers in more places than any other service club organisation, and love to help others and make things happen. Every Lions Clubs supports a range of good causes and projects in its area where you can get involved. Every day Lions are having fun by organising remarkable and memorable fundraising activities - with every penny raised going direct to good causes. All Lions Clubs administrative costs are covered by the individual members, meaning every pound you donate goes directly to good causes. Every year in Europe alone, Lions Clubs’ members volunteer around 6 million hours of service and raise £88 million to support the needs of local communities. 3 Hammers Flying High for Top Award
down to Wentworth where they collected the award in front of a packed audience of golfing greats and top celebrities. Complex Owner Ian Bonser said “3 Hammers continues to go from strength to strength. It’s a prestigious award and recognises us on a national scale as the best in the UK for our hugely successful junior coaching programmes benefitting over 3,000 kids across the region over the past year. Going forward, this accolade encourages new people to take up the sport confident in the abilities of our 5, now national award winning, PGA Golf Professionals”. The trip saw the Golf Academy Team rub shoulders with A-list celebrities such as BBC’s Chris Evans, Piers Morgan, Vernon Kay and One Direction’s Niall Horan. They were also joined by a host of sporting stars including Masters winner Danny Willet, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Trevor Immelman, Sir Ian Botham, John Terry, Jamie Redknapp, Kevin Pietersen, Alan Shearer and Paul Scholes.
A renowned West Midlands based Golf Complex, which gave over 3,000 youngsters a pathway into golf, has won a coveted national award, celebrating their success in spectacular style by flying the staff by helicopter to a star studded event at Wentworth to collect their prize. 3 Hammers Golf Complex, Wolverhampton have been honoured by winning the prestigious Critchley award from the Golf Foundation where they shone above all competition by successfully getting people to take up the sport of golf. Joined by excited crowds including their Ladies Love Golf members, the Complex celebrated the prestigious occasion by landing a helicopter on their driving range to fly the Golf Academy team and two lucky junior golfers in luxury style

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2016
The Awards celebrate some of the excellent people who work at the grass roots of the game and the high achieving projects which encourage more people to find their way in golf. The Critchley Award, one of eight President’s Awards is given to the heroes of grassroots junior golf and has been awarded to 3 Hammers. The hugely popular junior programme at the Complex is testament that golf is not in decline as is often reported. In fact, 3 Hammers continues to go from strength to strength and their proven successful formula is now recognised as a national example of good practice by the EGU, PGA and Golf Foundation. The Complex, supported by England Golf and the Golf Foundation, involves their 5 full time PGA Golf Professionals and two level 1 coaches to run Tri-Golf and Junior Golf Passport sessions in local primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities and groups across the region such as girl guides and scouts. The coaching then continues through the Player and Elite levels at the Complex’s unique facilities in Coven, Wolverhampton.
The now national award winning Complex ran junior programmes involving over 3,000 youngsters, 42 per cent of whom were girls. Pupils receive follow-on coaching right up to their teenage years with many youngsters joining local golf clubs as junior members as a result. In recent years the Complex have expanded their facilities to enable the teaching of golf to people on a much wider scale with the design and commission of a purpose built Learn 2 Play Zone, the first of its kind in the UK. At over 10,000sqft the Zone is fully netted, astro turfed with synthetic putting green and an undercover pavilion. They are also continuing with an impressive £250,000 investment project including upgrading their 20 bay driving range with the latest automatic power tees and further investment on their esteemed golf course - making it even more accessible for beginners, juniors and golfers of all standards. With 5 full time PGA Golf Professionals on site, the Complex stands head and shoulders amongst other golfing venues across the region. The Critchley Award represents the outstanding work they have carried out in the community developing a successful pathway from school to golfer. This Golf Foundation award highlights golfing venues across the country recognising their outstanding achievements with junior golfers. All award winners support the Golf Foundation’s purpose to make golf and its benefits available to young people and help them ‘Start, Learn and Stay’ in the game. Rob Bluck, 3 Hammers Golf Academy Director, said “The Presidents’ Awards represent a unique opportunity for us to showcase our passion, commitment and hard work inspiring young golfers and growing the game of golf. We are always delighted with the progress and enthusiasm of our juniors from ages 4 up to 16, with over 20 of our students going on to become Golf Professionals themselves. It’s a hugely rewarding part of what we do here at 3 Hammers and we’re delighted to be recognised with such a coveted award.”

Seat Ibiza FR Red Edition
BY ROB TAYLOR
GIVING YOU ETERNAL YOUTH
It’s a sad fact that once you begin to approach middleage you no longer get the admiring glances from others that you used to. Gone forever are the fleeting glimpses of promise served up periodically during your formative years: an admiring look here, a forbidden stare there, did much to pepper the tedium of everyday life. You did for some time have the confidence to, of course, assume that your admirer was looking at you, not at someone over your shoulder. You had the guts to look back and smile. And yet in just this last week I’ve received far more attention than is customary for an Ordinary Joe, aged 39. And though it pains me to say it, it is not because I have discovered the elixir of youth. It is because I have been driving a new car – the Seat Ibiza FR Red Edition. After all – for most of us at least – the closest we can come to recapturing our formerly attractive selves is through cars. And the Red Edition is just such a car. It gets looks like no other affordable hatchback does. This particular version of the fourth generation staple from the VW family – a variant that I jocularly refer to as “Red Ed” – is an arresting take on a familiar favourite. In its white and red colour scheme it calls attention to itself more loudly than a celebrity doing charity work. 60
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2016
The FR Red Edition is the top trim on the recently-refreshed Ibiza icon and adds most notably: gloss red exterior touches – the grille is outlined in red, wing mirrors are red and there are red flashes on the 17” ‘Dynamic’ alloys – are matched to interior flourishes, as well as red seatbelts. Now who doesn’t love a car with red seatbelts? But it’s not all about razzmatazz, underneath the make-up there is a thoroughly well-engineered car, which is more than capable of meeting every one of your everyday needs. In its five-door form there’s the space that is essential to today’s hatchback buyer. I found easily a comfortable driving position that didn’t come at the expense of the passenger sitting behind me. Nor did I struggle to load into the boot our weekly shop. There’s the usual high-quality VW cabin-craft inside, with soft-touch switchgear; ergonomic excellence and delicate interior plastics, which are definitely one-up on the previous incarnation. Everything is run from a large central 6.5” touchscreen, which is quick and easy to use intuitively. And with Seat’s Full Link package, which gives you access to Apple Car Play, Android Auto or Mirror Link, depending on the make of your smartphone, you can access all the apps you get on your phone. But who wants a car to be a phone? Keen drivers will be pleased to learn that the FR model adds sports suspension and can be specc’d with a ‘sport mode’. This is what impresses
me most about this car: it delivers big on all of its exterior and interior sporting promise. The engine starts unceremoniously enough, but quickly piques your interest when up and running, as it can be both docile and dumbfounding if the situation presents. It is quick - 0-60 mph in 9.1 seconds; top speed, 122 mph. It rides really well on its sports suspension and is never jarring. Equally the FR Ibiza is a capable performer whenever it’s possible to string a few corners together and is thus entirely justified in wearing the accoutrements of sportiness. 175 Nm of torque at low revs from its modest 1.2 litre 110 bhp power-plant allied to its turbocharged nature make performance more than adequate at speed and so the car is a competent cruiser, producing little wind noise or tyre roar. Impressive too is the claimed 54.3 mpg fuel consumption figure (I averaged nearly 50 mpg) and the 119g/km emissions number, not to mention a price of just over £18,000. This is small price to pay for eternal youth. So unless you are fortunate enough to be reading this in resplendent youth, your fastest route to balancing mortgages, marriage and mother-inlaws with whatever youthful yearnings you may have burning deep inside, is the Ibiza FR Red Edition. Because as you get older, it seems you’re either red or dead.

Smart ForTwo
BY ROB TAYLOR
GROUNDBREAKING DESIGN
The Smart ForTwo is a clever little car: a groundbreaking design for an overpopulated planet. If it could talk it would regale you with witty motoring anecdotes, explain the intricacies of the internal combustion engine and do it all while driving you to the shops. Look in its glovebox and you’ll see a Mensa membership card. But no-one really likes a smart rear-end or do they? As of this year, old clever clogs can arrive on your driveway as a roofless cabrio, but today I’m concentrating on its hard-top sibling, because it’ll take a lot more than flashy gimmicks to unstick my own fascination with the Smart car, which began soon after it launched in the late 1990s. This 1 litre Passion test car certainly still cuts a dash in its natural habitat around the towns and cities of the West Midlands - not quite the neon-glow of Tokyo but just the terrain needed to see if it can outsmart its many rivals, most notably the Renault Twingo, which, thanks to Smart’s joint-venture development programme with– ahem – Renault, shares the ForTwo’s underpinnings. The Smart’s short wheelbase (the whole car still retains the original’s
62

tiny 269cm length) means that it turns into corners responsively and rewardingly, yet the ride is smooth and comfortable, which could never be said of the previous generation - it had road manners akin to a substandard soapbox race entry. This gutsy three-cylinder engine develops 71bhp and makes keeping pace with traffic in town a cinch and there’s every reason to greet passing cyclists without shame and greenfaced embarrassment, because - as a corollary of its urban-orientated design – it coughs out less than 100g/km of the nasty stuff. It fits right in with slick city fashion too: trendy shoppers nod approvingly, while sipping lattes outside ultra-cool coffee shops, and the Smart’s supercool 15” alloy wheels allow you to bask in your own shop-window-reflected glory. But much of this will come as no particular surprise, nor will fans of Mercedes (Smart’s owner) be shocked to learn that it is well-built, blessed with finely upholstered seats and made with top quality interior plastics – or that it can be specc’d to be as sombre or colourful as you wish. Equally unsurprising is the fact that every bit of tech, whether infotainment – the £795 Premium Package which gets you built-in sat-nav, is a must – or safety is top-notch.
However what is truly staggering is that in a car small enough to park in your pocket, this six foot tall writer could comfortably be accommodated inside for a lengthy cross-country three hour run, involving motorways – the old Smart car’s nemesis – and myriad A and B-roads, and not come out the other side beset by tinnitus, wracked with back ache. Admittedly the engine can feel strained when under load, but you never feel too under-powered or intimidated on motorways, unless of course you happen to come up against a large automotive colossus when there’s a particularly strong cross-wind. A 0-60mph time of 14.4 seconds won’t win any drag races, however a top speed of 94 mph is all you’ll ever legally need. The Smart ForTwo is still an impressive amount of innovation for a not particularly impressive starting price of £11,070. The 5-speed manual gearbox (you can pay more for an auto) is precise and the gearing is well spaced and, when employed sensibly, it will return up to – officially - 69mpg on the combined cycle. With some fun and frolics I managed around 45mpg. So without having a retro gimmick like the Fiat 500, the cheap practicality of the Renault Twingo, the little Smart ForTwo is a big success in its own right.

CANNOCK AWARENESS COURSE STEERING YOUNG DRIVERS TO ROAD SAFETY
The ‘Young Drivers’ Course’ is aimed at 17-24-year-olds and will take place at Cannock Community Fire Station.
Community Safety Officer, Rachel Spruce said: “12 per cent of fatal and serious crashes involve motorists aged between 17-19 years of age, yet these young drivers make up only 1.5 per cent of UK license holders. It is vital that we drive home safety messages as early as possible to ensure safe driving begins as soon as the L-plates come off.”
Community Safety Officers will give a presentation to young drivers in a bid to convey the importance of driving safely and sensibly.
For more information or to book on any of the above courses please telephone 01785 898730 or email Community Safety Officer rachel.spruce@staffordshirefire.gov.uk
A drivers’ awareness course hopes to steer young motorists in Cannock away from risk taking and towards road safety.
The ‘Fatal Four’ presentation highlights the most common mistakes made by young drivers which can result in lifechanging injuries or even death. These include speeding, driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt and distractions such as using a mobile phone whilst driving. A modified vehicle is used to simulate a road traffic collision allowing young people to experience first-hand what it would be like. The vehicle, which has been designed to have its doors removed, demonstrates procedures used by firefighters, driving home potentially life-saving messages. The sessions will run from 7pm-8.30pm on August 4 and November 24.
