When The Lights Go Out!
Our lives are becoming ever more dependent on electricity. If the power to our home is cut, are we happy with cold water, no heating, no internet, reading by candlelight, worrying about the food in the freezer thawing, being locked in or out by electric gates, etc? The UK has a narrowing gap between the amount of power the grid can deliver and the demands placed upon it. As well as power cuts due to line damage during storms, the UK has a growing grid supply problem with excess capacity headroom for the winter of 2015-16 being forecast as low as 1.5GW(1). It will take many years to resolve this and most experts now agree there will be no significant upturn before sufficient nuclear-powered electricity can be generated to bridge the gap (probably be 2035). When this gap is closed or part of the supply infrastructure is damaged – the lights will go out. Don’t be left in the dark. A standby generator system will automatically turn itself on when the mains power fails and supply anything from a few circuits to the whole building. When mains power is restored the system shuts down and reverts to standby for when it is next needed. 4

New Bathroom with Neuxgen
If there is one room in the house where you need to be warm and perfectly comfortable, it’s the bathroom. There it is that you can find yourself wearing the least clothes, and be wet too. Bathrooms should be where you can relax in warm humidity, where you have access to limitless piping hot water and where you can be free from chilling draughts. Once upon a time bathrooms comprised a bath, washbasin and perhaps also a WC. Today most people also expect a shower. Our ideas have changed over recent years as have our bathing habits. As a population we bathe more often in the week than did our parents and grandparents, we expect to be able to do so whenever we feel like it, and at a moment’s notice. A well designed, comfortable bathroom is not a luxury, it is a necessity, a right to which we are all entitled. If your present bathroom lacks some creature comforts, it’s high time it was replaced.
The biggest change in the modern bathroom however, is the shower. Whether housed in a separate cubicle or fitted over the bath. Make sure there are sufficient mirrors and adequate lighting. An illuminated mirror and shaving point are essential. Choose the decor with care. Bathrooms should be cheerful or elegant, not depressingly plain. Consider ceramic or porcelain tiles for the walls and the same for the floors though alternatively, you could choose karndean or vinyl flooring. If your bathroom is not a supreme pleasure to enter and be in, the time has come to ensure it is, and there really is no time like the present. So if your thoughts are turning towards revamping your bathroom it’s worth remembering that we don’t have to look much further than Neuxgen. Call in to their new showroom they provide quality services with up-to-date products to help make our homes just perfect.
First consider a new suite. The latest baths are of plastic derivatives, warm to the touch, easy to care for and tough in use. You can however, still buy enamelled cast iron or steel baths though oddly, they tend to cost rather more than the non-metal models. Modern baths are also very attractive to look at and come, not only in a huge range of colours including black and white, they are also made in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit in with almost any shape and size of room. Matching washbasins may stand upon a pedestal or they may be fitted into a vanity unit with a surrounding worktop and cupboards underneath. The basin part will be made either of a plastic derivative or porcelain. The latest matching WCs are sleek, easy to clean, porcelain fixtures with low, slim-line cisterns and a two-tier choice of flush - full or half, to help conserve your water.

Marathon Cheque Presentation 2015 THE MARATHON EVENTS ARE FOR ALL AGES AND ABILITIES The Marathon events are all about encouraging activity for all ages and abilities and it was encouraging to see so many set off in all their different events. This year the organisers added a Walk in the Park to the list of events. Kindly sponsored by Call Print the walk attracted almost 100 participants. An encouraging start and it is hoped that it will “grow” next year.
On Monday 7th December the organisers of the 18th Carver Wolverhampton Marathon joined together with the Sponsors and Charity recipients at the Mayors Parlour for the finale of the Events, the presentation of the cheques to the chosen charities for 2015. £18.750.00 was shared between Compton Hospice, Samaritans Wolverhampton , Beacon Centre for the Blind and the Mayoral Charity Fund. On Sunday 6th September 2015 more than 2000 people took to the streets of Wolverhampton, running and cycling various distances in the 18th running of the events. The sun shone as competitors lined up for the Cousins 20k cycle ride, Carver Marathon and Half Marathon and the Banks’s 10k race. NJB Sports & Physio again sponsored the events and were kept busy on the day tending to the sore limbs and fatigue suffered by some of the competitors. Greggs the bakers again sponsored, handing out their “goody bags” to all finishers. This is an opportunity to thank all the sponsors and supporters especially Carver Building Supplies who have always given the Marathon Events their full backing, both financially and with volunteer helpers: Marston’s plc who sponsor The Banks’s 10K and Cousins Furniture who sponsor the 20K cycle ride. Without this Sponsorship and support it would be hard to stage such a large event in our City. There are also many other organisations who support the Events. A big thank you to you all. The success of the events relies heavily on such committed sponsorship and support. 81
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY 2016
The atmosphere in West Park was enhanced by our Media Sponsors Signal 107. With Dicky Dodd both at the start and later keeping everyone updated as the runners and cyclists came through the finish line. The Express & Star helped with news stories to help promote the Event as did Wolverhampton West Magazine.
Chair Mary Harding Quotes; “For me the highlight of the day was watching those hundreds of people set off on their chosen event and then welcoming them back to the park with no serious problems or injuries. I have a further thankyou to the planning committee who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure the course is properly set up and marshalled.”
The date has been set for 2016. It will be Sunday September 4th to view pictures from the 2015 event visit the Marathon website www. carverwolverhamptonmarathonevents.co.uk and follow the link to Brian Smith photos.
Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not
just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock
and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Tile Choice - Dining Room Drama
GIVE YOUR DINING ROOM DEFINITION & STYLE
For many of us, our dining rooms are combined with our kitchens or living rooms so it’s hard to give them a defined style or design, whereas many people who do have a separate dining room often overlook redesigning the space because it is used fairly infrequently. However, if you can make your dining room or dining room area an inviting but practical space to eat with friends and family, then you’ll have no excuse not to be the ever gracious dinner party host and make the most of your dining space. Tiles provide a stylish, sleek finish as well as a lowmaintenance surface which is easy to keep clean – perfect in a busy kitchen or dining room. We have a fantastic range of floor tiles in stock in a variety of colours, styles and finishes. So whether you have a

contemporary kitchen or something more traditional, we can supply the wall and floor tiles that you need to transform your kitchen area into a stylish and functional space. Both wall and floor tiles can be focal points for the home, adding valuable contrast and offering ample opportunity to express your sense of style. If you’re a little quirky or obsessive about something, let it out, particularly if you plan on staying for a while. For instance, chocolate lovers could be swimming in the stuff if they choose the right Dairy Milk-inspired tiles. Unless you happen to love the tranquility of pristine white, enjoy the freedom of thinking outside the box. When choosing tiles, be inspired by surroundings you love: think English country house, Manhattan penthouse or Moroccan riad.

Chimney Safety Advice for Consumers OVER 30 THOUSANDS HOUSES HAVE CHIMNEY FIRES UK fire statistics show that each year on average over 30 thousands houses have chimney fires. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) advises that this will be largely due to not getting the chimney swept often enough or burning fuel that is inappropriate for the appliance and causing tar to build up in the chimney. Most insurance companies will no longer pay out for claims made due to chimney fires, unless the chimney has been swept by a professional Chimney Sweep and a valid Certificate of Chimney Sweeping issued that is recognised by insurance companies. If the fire brigade is called out to a chimney fire and it is proven that the chimney has not been properly maintained, then the local council can bill you for the call out, which can be expensive!
include the type of fuel used, appliance, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, and the type of chimney you have. Your local NACS Chimney Sweep will be able to advise on the sweeping frequency during the appointment. The sweeping frequencies below are for guidance purposes only:• • • • •
Chimney fires can not only destroy homes but also endanger the occupiers of the dwelling. Slow-burning chimney fires don’t get enough air or have enough fuel to be as dramatic or visible as their more spectacular cousins. The temperatures they reach are very high and can cause damage to the chimney structure and nearby combustible parts of the house. Use only recommended fuels for your appliance and flue type (if you are unsure then check your manufactures instructions, ask your stove supplier, or your local NACS Chimney Sweep). Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gases. Regular Chimney Sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Chimney Sweeping will also help to increase the efficiency of appliances. The frequency of Chimney Sweeping will depend on a number of factors which 20

NACS Chimney Sweeps are very mindful and conscious of making as little mess as possible, and are in fact trained in the prevention of dust escaping during sweeping. Normally Chimney Sweeps will need a clear passage to the chimney and adequate space to work in. They may suggest you clear any ornaments from the hearth and mantelpiece, and perhaps you could clear the grate of any fuel, ash or rubbish etc before the sweep arrives. Gas and oil flues will also need to be swept. It is essential that all flues are kept clean and clear of debris and vermin nests. It will also help with the prevention of chimney fires and even carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have just moved house, then it is important you have your chimney swept as soon as possible as you may not necessarily know when it was last cleaned properly by a professional Chimney Sweep. Always ensure you receive a NACS Certificate of Chimney Sweeping. Your Chimney Sweep will also provide advice on your Chimney, heating appliances, what fuels to use, and the best practice for fuel storage. Chimney Sweeps that are Members of the National Association of Chimney Sweeps undertake an extensive training program and have to successfully complete a full assessment prior to becoming and trading as a NACS Member. All NACS Members
must hold valid insurance for Chimney Sweeping, of which they provide a copy of to the Association on an annual basis. They must also have the correct equipment to be able to undertake the job which is checked at the time of their assessment.
Exhibition is open to the public with free entrance and free parking, and is next taking place on 15th & 16th April 2016 at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Bridgefoot, Stratford upon Avon, CV37 6YR.

East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story. Along with the dazzling score, the incomparable Jerome Robbins ballet, ‘The Small House of Uncle Thomas,’ is one of the all-time marvels of the musical stage.
We are proud to bring this show to the Black Country (as an amateur production) by arrangement with R&H Theatricals Europe (www.rnh.com).

Best Kept Village Competition 2016 It’s the New Year and it’s time to start thinking about the Best Kept Village Competition again! The competition has been going since 1956 and over 200 villages have entered during that time. Some of these only lasted a year or two, but many are still involved and the village of Tutbury has entered every year but one since 1956! There were 58 entries last year and the BKV Working Group (which organises the competition on behalf of the Community Council of Staffordshire) would love to see 61 villages or more enter in 2016 – the 61st year of BKV. The focus of BKV is on community spirit and involvement and the maintenance and improvement of the environment of villages. It’s not about pretty villages, it’s more about villages whose residents, local organisations, community and volunteer groups, etc. get together to keep the environment and amenity areas of those villages in good order. Villages should register their intention to enter BKV in 2016 with the Community Council by Monday 22 February; full entry details will not be required until Monday 28 March 2016. John Perry, Chairman of the BKV Working Group, said: “Really high standards were achieved by a number of villages last year and I think that generally standards have improved overall during the last few years. The judges found it difficult to separate the best villages in several areas of the county in 2015, and I don’t anticipate that it will be any easier in 2016! Last year’s winning villages will be working hard to retain their titles and there will be others that will be determined to win this year. There will also be some villages which maybe feel that they don’t have a realistic chance of being champions, but will be determined to make sure that their villages look as well maintained as possible – and perhaps aim that bit higher than last year. That is really what BKV is about!”
Villages will be visited in May and then again in June, by different teams of judges. The best large and the best small villages in each area will be judged again in July. Then the best villages in each area will be judged in the County Finals in mid-July. The results of the competition will be announced in early August. John Perry said: “We haven’t made any significant changes to the BKV competition for 2016, except that the “split” between large and small villages will be 1500 population (rather than 1000). This figure hasn’t changed for many years and the change reflects the housing growth in a number of villages in recent years. In addition, judges will consider decommissioned telephone boxes, which have been put to a number of very interesting uses across the county, as village features, rather than as phone boxes. The complementary children’s competitions will take place as usual.” The BKV competition relies on a large group of volunteer judges and the BKV Working Group is always looking for more each year to replace those who have retired.
Chris Welch, Chief Executive of the Community Council of Staffordshire, said: “We are always looking for more judges and if anyone would like to give it a go, please contact the Community Council. We provide training, and new judges are always teamed up with more experienced ones – so no-one should feel worried about not having judged before. I can promise you a couple of interesting days, perhaps judging villages which you may not have visited before – and of course we guarantee sunny weather and blue skies.” If you would like to know more about the Best Kept Village Competition, the complementary children’s competitions, would like advice or guidance on how to enter or would like to be a judge, please contact the Community Council on 01785 242525 or email: communitycouncil@staffs.org.uk

Stafford Grammar School and Stafford Preparatory School warmly invite you to Open Week. It is an opportunity to see the school in action on a real working day. At Stafford Grammar School we offer the best of both worlds: a school with outstanding academic success that feels like a family. Our pupils thrive in our happy and caring environment, where every pupil is known as an individual. Our success is built on the highest quality teaching and learning which is supported by the excellent rapport between teachers and pupils. Whilst we pride ourselves on being rated as one of the top schools in Staffordshire in Government league tables, the real spirit of Stafford Grammar School is to be found in the smiling faces, laughter and sense of fun that pupils and teachers experience every day. In our latest examination results, 66% of all GCSEs were A* or A grades, with approximately one third being at the top of the A* grade. Our school has become established as a centre of excellence at all levels and each year our Sixth Form students gain admission to the top universities. Academic excellence is only one part of the Stafford Grammar School success story. We believe in encouraging participation and excellence in all areas, in and outside the classroom. A wide variety of sports are available and our teams have an enviable record of success, winning local, county, regional and national competitions. Our pupils are continually inspired to excel in sport by others who have gone on to achieve sporting success at national level in sports as diverse as swimming, football, rugby, cricket, athletics, archery and ice hockey as well as our Youth Commonwealth gold medallist in javelin. 38
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY 2016
For young people who enjoy the performing arts, Stafford Grammar School is the place to be. With the opportunity to join choirs, vocal groups, Concert Band, Big Band, Orchestra and other ensembles, there really is something for everyone. Music performances are held regularly in school and our music ensembles and choirs have recently performed in the Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. Our award winning Concert Band will be touring Prague this summer, following highly successful tours in Spain, France and Italy. Drama continues to thrive and our school musicals are performed to sell-out audiences. Over the last few years, musical theatre productions of Annie, Beauty and the Beast, Les Miserables, West Side Story, Into the Woods and Fame have been produced to an exceptional standard and received acclaim in the local press. The SGS LAMDA acting group took ‘Oh Gumtree’, an original play, to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2015 and received rave reviews. The real success of these productions is to be found in the community spirit and teamwork involved. With such a lively variety of activities, it is easy to see why Stafford Grammar School and Stafford Preparatory School are such vibrant communities. We aim to give our pupils an exciting and challenging education. Based upon the values of hard work, kindness and respect, we strive to provide an enriching education that will inspire our pupils and enable them to make the most of every opportunity in their lives beyond school. Our extensive transport network means that we are accessible to families from a wide range of areas. Financial assistance with school fees is available through scholarships for academic, sporting or musical excellence and bursaries based on an assessment of household financial circumstances. We look forward to welcoming you to Stafford Grammar School and Stafford Preparatory School on our Open Week. Places now available in most Year groups.

RECIPE
Makes 12-16 slices By Michael Peter Whitehurst
WINTER COMFORTING CARROT CAKE INGREDIENTS FOR THE SPONGE • 300ml of olive oil • 300g of organic wholemeal self raising flour • 300g of soft dark brown sugar • 4 medium free range eggs • 2 tsp of baking powder • 1 tsp of ground ginger • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp of ground star anise • 50g of grated walnuts • 50g of grated stem ginger • 100g of golden raisins soaked in whisky • 1 tsp of vanilla extract • 1/2 tsp of Valencian orange extract • 1 pinch of Maldon sea salt • 300g of carrots peeled FOR THE BUTTERCREAM • 500g of icing sugar • 250g of softened unsalted butter • 1 tsp of ground mace • 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract • 50g of chopped dried apricots • 50g of roasted walnut halves and hazelnuts • 1 tbsp of toasted pumpkin seeds • Icing sugar EQUIPMENT • 1 x 9” cake tin greased and lined with parchment paper • Magi mix with grating attachment - large or small it’s up to you • Food mixer with paddle attachment / K beater • Spatula METHOd 1. Pre heat the oven to 175ªc and now make the batter. 2. Beat together the oil, salt and sugar on high speed until its lightens in colour a little then add in the flour, baking powder, vanilla, orange extract, spices and eggs and beat until smooth. Now using a magimix or similar food processor or just a hand held grater,
grate the walnuts, stem ginger and carrots and then fold into the cake batter with the whisky soaked raisins and a dash of the whisky. Pour into your 9” greased and lined tin - I use Alan Silverwood Anodised tins as they distribute the heat more evenly when baking. (Wash by hand, don’t put them in the dishwasher). 3. Bake in the oven on the middle shelf for about an hour then allow to cool in the tin for a while until turning out onto a cooling rack. Whilst this is cooling you can make your butter cream. 4. Using the magi mix, clean the bowl out and fit the blade attachment. Pour in the icing sugar and butter and blitz until the mix comes together as a smooth paste, add in a little vanilla and add half the ground mace. Now that the sponge has cooled completely slice across the middle with a cake wire or a long pastry knife. I find it easier to chill the sponge first before cutting so it’s a little less crumbly. Now spread the butter cream across the middle of the cake, as much as you like but you do need to save some for the outside. I like to completely cover my cake with buttercream on the outside but that’s up to you. Top with the chopped dried apricots, roasted nuts and seeds then dust with a little of the ground mace and icing sugar. SERvING SUGGESTION Serve this with an espresso or whatever your favourite hot beverage is.

St. Valentine’s Day - A Mystery Of Love
As a nation we are not particularly prone to celebrating saints’ days. We don’t do as many parts of Europe do, hold fun-filled festivals to celebrate this or that saint’s memory. Few of us celebrate a saint’s day dedicated to ourselves as they do in France say. Indeed if you asked the average person-in-the-street to name any saint and the day he or she is celebrated, St.Valentine’s Day would probably be the only one they could name with any certainty. Stranger still is the fact that this particular saint is no longer included on the Vatican’s ‘official’ list of saints. So who was this extraordinarily persistent saint, when did he live? Where did he come from? And why for goodness’ sake, does he represent everlasting and passionate love? There are several candidates. Some say he was a bishop from Terni who met a martyr’s death in Rome either during the time of Claudius the Second or perhaps Aurelian. If during the latter’s period of influence, then the date has been set at AD 271 with the event actually occurring on February 14th. Then there was a Roman priest martyred for his faith in AD 269, an Umbrian bishop executed in AD 273 and any of a series of nameless centurions who followed their Christian loved ones into the arena when they were condemned to martyrdom for their beliefs. Trying to relate the dates of these martyrs to February 14th is hardly possible because the calendar has been changed radically since those ancient times. February 15th saw the start of the Roman festival of Lupercalia which was a favourite time for Roman emperors to stage mass executions for the edification of the Roman people. 42
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY 2016
The Lupercalia was also a festival dedicated to the celebration of fertility and indirectly love. Young men roamed the streets dressed in the skins of sacrificial animals, in pursuit of any woman or girl they could catch. Any female touched by one of these young men was assured of her fertility in the coming year - for one reason or another! The river god Pan was also said to roam abroad at this time and could be encountered in the reeds by rivers and streams. Doubtless many an encounter took place but whether Pan was responsible for the result is an open question! The Romans brought the Lupercalia to Britain but it is pretty certain that a similar festival pre-dated its arrival. The Romans as usual, simply mixed and matched both religions and festivals and added them to their own extensive pantheon of gods and list of celebratory events. It is an interesting fact that only in Britain is this festival still observed. A similar custom once observed in France on the 1st day in Lent and dedicated to Pan and Juno is long defunct. When trying to trace the shadowy figure behind the legend, the fact that Roman soldiers were the main celebrants of the day does indicate a connection with that unfortunate centurion, though whether he died voluntarily for love, was executed for some misdemeanour or was killed accidentally while shepherding his prisoners into the arena, will probably never be known. The truth is the day is probably a composite of several Pagan festivals, Christianised at some time by missionaries in the way they did at the time and given the name of some unfortunate martyr who just happened to meet his death at around the appropriate date. The Lupercalia itself was eventually superseded by the Feast of Candlemass, and St.Valentine, whoever he was, was left on the calendar of saints because there was simply no one else to claim the day. One thing is certain, if he did indeed exist as a person, he would have been amazed to know how long his sacrifice would be remembered.

February when your dreams can come true! ENCOURAGING OUR CLIENTS TO ENJOY HEALTHY LIVING IN 2016 The New Year has passed and we are now into February, a month that is often overlooked other than in a leap year (which 2016 of course is) and Valentine’s Day. But, when we look a little more deeply into history, February has its own intriguing past. The Roman month Februarius was named after the Latin term februum, which means purification, via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 (full moon) in the old lunar Roman calendar. January and February were the last two months to be added to the Roman calendar, since the Romans originally considered winter a monthless period. They were added in about 713 BC. February remained the last month of the calendar year until around 450 BC, when it became the second month. There are some other Quite Interesting facts about February: in leap years, it is the only month that ends on the same weekday it began. Having only 28 days in common years, it is the only month of the year that can pass without a single full moon. This last happened in 1999 and will next happen in 2018. We at The Chase CACI Clinic would like to help with that ‘Purification’ and are encouraging our clients to visit the ‘Healthy Living’ page on our website (www.chasecaciclinic. co.uk) and take the free lifestyle analysis, there is then a complete range of products available to help with Detox or the ‘Healthy Starter’ pack, plus many more. You can order directly from the website or by phone, alternatively you could discuss the options with your therapists when you next visit. We have now made ‘Monday’ – ‘Manday’ where men are encouraged to visit us and experience the benefit they can get from having both CACI treatments and using ‘Heaven’ men’s products. In addition, we are offering romantic ‘His and Hers Facials’ for February in honour of Valentine’s Day; relax side by side on your own treatment couch and each enjoy one of our marvellous facials. It does not get much better!
‘The Best Newcomer Award’ by Deborah herself. This was in recognition of the results being achieved at The Chase CACI Clinic by the innovative use of CACI treatments and Heaven products in our combination therapies. We were then amazed in January when the accolades continued: The Chase CACI Clinic has been selected as ‘a top performing CACI salon to be interviewed and featured in the beauty industry’s premier trade magazine as a way of showcasing the success of the salon and promoting their story’. These success stories are run monthly in the ‘Guild News’ which is the UK’s Highest Circulating Beauty Trade Magazine. ‘This series of success stories started in January of last year and is planned to continue throughout 2016 as a way to showcase and inspire other CACI salons owners’. We have two CACI Machines – ‘The Ultimate’ and ‘The Quantum’ which can be used in differing ways. They can both be used in conjunction with our Radio frequency machine to further enhance the results, add to these the Heaven’ products and you can see why we are achieving such impressive outcomes. In addition, we have the ‘Apilus’ machine which is used for hair, skin tag and milia removal, to complete the stable, we have a facial steamer! Why not treat yourself to a free consultation and then sample these wonderful ‘Combination Therapies’ as part of your ongoing New Year resolution? You won’t regret it!
We felt very privileged in December to be invited to the 20th Annual Awards dinner held by ‘Heaven by Deborah Mitchell’ and were absolutely thrilled to be presented with

Patricia Pitt - Author of the Crystal System
The sport of Dressage is perceived as incredibly complicated and difficult within the equestrian world, but Patricia Pitt, author of The Crystal System which is a self help book for riders with the aim of clearing up some of the mysteries that surround the ability to ride with feel and subtlety, believes that anyone can develop the skills required to do dressage at some level.
And in her very motivational, positive style Patricia also illustrated the book to inject a little fun along the way; developing a cartoon character called Crystal, based on Mark’s Lusitano mare Sintra, who is trained to Grand Prix level.
Frustration and a feeling of failure, due to her own lack of progress and inability to find the key to unlock her riding potential has led Patricia, from Huntington, Nr Cannock, Staffordshire to the launch of her new book The Crystal System. “I had a dream that I wanted to be more than just mediocre and to ride really well. I struggled for many years and become increasingly frustrated until one day I had an ‘epiphany’, I couldn’t go on getting nowhere and decided find out why my dream was so elusive”. By researching many training methods and turning to her long suffering partner, Mark Bentley, she began a journey of discovery. Mark, a very naturally talented rider, was instrumental in helping Patricia along her journey. “I would share my findings and give hints and tips on my blog at www.likecrystal.com and The Dressage Tipster Facebook page; I figured there might be others with the same issues as me. I was right, I won an equestrian blogging award in 2014 and the subscription list is growing fairly rapidly. I also have a Facebook following in excess of 10,000” Patricia did not intend to write a self-help book for dressage enthusiasts but she says “I had this body of work and realised that there was no method of pulling it all together and actually, it was this that had been missing from my training. It was a logical path to follow, so I set about pulling everything together, simplifying it and turning into a very easy to follow, easy to read system that can be enjoyed by any equestrian, however inexperienced for experienced”. 52
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY 2016
Patricia has now secured sponsorship with Blue Chip Feeds and is on track for her aspirations to compete, which may just inspire a second book. The reviews from the equestrian community so far for The Crystal System have been excellent. The book is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in riding. “I will continue to share my experiences on the blog and hopefully another body of work will develop that could help my fellow equestrians realise their dreams. I loved doing the illustrations too, a cartoon strip might be fun.” Patricia looks forward to what 2016 will bring for herself, her partner Mark and their horses.
Competition New venue, new format for Shire Horse Society National Show 2016 This month we have teamed up with The Shire Horse Society’s National Show and two lucky winners will each win a family ticket. The world’s largest gathering of Shire horses returns for 2016 with a new venue and a new format. The Shire Horse Society’s National Show 2016 will be run over three days, instead of two, and will be staged at Staffordshire County Showground from 18th to 20th March. Expected to attract around 200 horses from across Europe and visitors from around the globe, the show has moved its ridden classes to the Friday afternoon due to the growing popularity of this section of the event. The show is also moving to a new home this year – Bingley Hall in the centre of Staffordshire County Showground - to cater for increasing visitor numbers to the show, who are keen to support the iconic breed which a few decades ago was in danger of dying out. Shire Horse Society secretary David Ralley-Davies said: “Our National Show has been steadily gaining in popularity again recently and we wanted to ensure that everyone who wants to go gets the chance to attend, hence the decision to move to a bigger and more central venue for 2016. “Bingley Hall will also provide additional facilities for exhibitors and their horses, such as indoor stabling for the majority of horses being shown. We are looking forward to welcoming many new visitors, as well as our loyal followers and our members, to the showground.” The first qualifier of 2016 for the Horse of the Year Show, the event features three days of competition and classes, with horses shown in-hand, ridden and in harness. It will also include stalls and exhibitor stands for the public to browse.
Tickets are now on sale via the Shire Horse Society’s website www.shire-horse.org.uk Follow the charity on Facebook or Twitter https://www.facebook.com/shirehorsesociety and @saveourshires The event takes place from noon to 6pm on Friday 18th March, from 8am to 6pm on Saturday 19th March and from 8am to 4pm on Sunday 20th March 2016. Is your 2016 New Year’s resolution going to be to remove an unwanted tattoo, - or perhaps one on your partner? An ex partners name, to a now less than trendy music artists name, we’ve removed them all! Whether complete removal is required, or just sufficient fading to allow for new tattoo art to be placed on top of old, all leading plastic surgeons and dermatologists regard Laser Tattoo Removal as the most superior and safest method currently available. Opened in 1992, The Cottage Surgery is the third longest established tattoo removal clinic in the UK. Since then our laser practitioners have removed or faded many thousands of black and multi-coloured tattoos utilising three purpose made, single task lasers, designed, built and maintained to the highest ‘medical grade’ standards.
Our other Medical Aesthetic treatments include: • Acne & acne scarring • Anti-ageing • Birth marks • Botox • Chloasma • Dermal fillers • Electrolysis • Laser hair removal • Laser fungal nail treatment • Hyperhidrosis • Tattoo removal • Medical peels • Melasma • Microdermabrasion • Non-surgical face lifts • Pain relief • Photo-rejuvenation • Pigmentation • Pigmented lesions/Liver spots /Sun spots/Age spots • Port wine stains • Rosacea • Scarring • Skin rejuvenation • Skin tags • Smoking cessation • Sports injury • Stretch marks • Sun damage • Telangiectasia • Thread vein removal • Verruca removal • Wart removal • Wrinkle reduction injections
56
Our Q-Switched Ruby Laser, (one of only eight in the UK, two of which are in hospitals and used for research) uses the highest power output currently available worldwide, providing the most effective removal. A Q-Switched Nd-yag laser and a Q-Switched KTP laser are also available. Highly experienced laser practitioners and nurses bring many years of combined expertise to bear, therefore providing the quickest most efficient tattoo removal. The Surgery is at the forefront of developing and introducing supplementary treatments to aid this process. The recent influx of cheap lasers from the Far East, mean that some individuals now offer ‘low cost’ treatments. Inevitably the lasers used are underpowered and remove little or no ink at each sitting. The very best of them produce poor results and many recurring treatments are needed to have any significant effect. Two further factors relating to laser technology should be considered. Firstly, most of the inferior lasers claim to be Q-Switched, but in fact use a cheaper electronic version of Q-Switching, and can be as much as 10 to 20 times less powerful. Secondly, within the last couple of years, it has been discovered that these weaker lasers can, by not having the required power to shatter the tattoo ink, instead can melt it, unfortunately changing the nature of the ink, & making it impossible to remove by ANY Laser. Beware!
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY 2016
Compare these to the type of lasers used at The Cottage Surgery and you will realise that overall, these ‘cheaper treatments’ will eventually cost much more. Add to this, increased travel costs as well as time wasted and you will realise ‘cheap tattoo removal’ is not a realistic option and those individuals that offer it, are being less than honest regarding their success. Ask us about THE LASERASE PROMISE, it can make the difference! Beware also of other non-laser tattoo removal methods being offered, often on the internet. Some will definitely not work, others can do you real long term harm. We are happy to provide independent, confidential information. Whilst confidently offering superior outcomes for Laser Tattoo Removal, The Cottage Surgery believe in providing these at competitive rates in a confidential and caring environment. If you want safe, successful and cost effective treatment, there simply is no one else in the region to provide a better service.

The Friends of St Marys present Good Cause, CHARITY ROCK BAND On Saturday February 27th Good Cause will be performing at St Mary’s Church, Stafford. Bob Arnold was a drummer in the 1960’s in a local band. After years of pursuing other hobbies, he was asked in 1995 to guest in a stage production for charity. Being bitten by the bug he did more shows until in 1999 he thought that forming a group to raise funds for charity would be good idea. Encouraging other like-minded local musicians to join him, and after some small venue gigs, it soon became obvious that music fans would support these evenings and charities have benefited ever since. Some of the Charities that have benefited since 1999 are Katharine House, St Peter’s Pre-school, Silkmore Primary School, Dyslexia Action, Tillington School, Diabetics Within District hospitals, Support Dogs, Cancer Research, Action Research, Stafford Bereavement and Loss, St. Peter’s Pre-School, Tetraplegics in sport, Air ambulance, Breast cancer, Marie Curie, Donna Louise, North Staffs hospital neurological ward, Oak Tree Farm, NACCPO, First Responders, Stafford Olympics, Kenya orphanage, Girl Guiding, MASE, Stafford Lions, Scouts, Headway, SNAP, CASS, Kidney Research, McMillan 58

Sue Starr Hypnotherapy COMMITMENT FACILITATES LONG LASTING CHANGE RATHER THAN A TEMPORARY FIX “Throughout the last year, my client base has continued to increase. Clinical Hypnotherapy continues to develop credibility as a leading alternative therapy and features in many media stories mostly for the right reasons! Our point of difference is that we include more behavioural tools, such as CBT and NLP, alongside Hypnotherapy to support clients in achieving their personal goals”. Sue Starr Hypnotherapy has over the last 3 years established itself as a leading practice in South Staffordshire. Sue continues “Teenagers and young children (as young as 6) are an increasing part of my client base; they tend to be great fun to work with and engage really well with therapy. The diversity of issues faced can range from low confidence, anxieties, exam pressures and bullying. GP and school referrals for this continue to highlight a broader shortage in support for young people where quick response is essential” As well as the regular client base, last summer saw an increase in people wanting Hypnotherapy prior to weddings. Best Man speeches, Bride confidence and self-esteem concerns have so far been supported by Sue, “Weddings are supposed to be the best day of a couples lives, however, this pressure of being in the spotlight, organising so much and wanting it to be perfect can be overwhelming. We help with the mindset so that the big day can be fully enjoyed by confident, in control Brides,
Grooms and the Best Man!” The most important thing is that a client really wants a beneficial change for themselves and that they are committed to making a change. Expecting a magic wand result with no hard work or challenges is not the case with Hypnotherapy. “Many people nowadays want quick fixes with no effort; Hypnotherapy requires dedication from the client to bring about change. But combining Hypnotherapy and client commitment facilitates long lasting change rather than a temporary fix!” Sue Starr Dip Hyp, DNLP, GQHP, GHRreg is a fully qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and is registered with the General Hypnotherapy Register, General Hypnotherapy Standards Council, and the NHS recognised Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council. ZERO HERO
BY ROB TAYLOR
THERE’S MUCH ENJOYMENT TO BE HAD IN THE SIMPLE ACT OF DRIVING THIS CAR
Adding precisely “zero” to a Peugeot 208 gets you nothing extra, right? Wrong. You get a SUV in microcosm, the 2008. And it’s a cracking little vehicle that nails the formula of melding SUV styling with hatchback dimensions to offer buyers’ their favourite motoring tool for the 21st Century: the crossover vehicle. With over 30,000 sold to UK buyers in the last three years, it’s already a much beloved vehicle and in its newest Urban Cross Special Edition guise it looks set to be more popular than ever before. Effectively ‘Urban Cross’ is a styling upgrade over the standard 2008 and I have it here with a 1.2 litre 110 bhp PureTech petrol engine (there’s a 1.6 litre diesel available too). Never until now has it looked so purposeful with an already strong exterior further reinforced by black 17inch alloys and wing mirrors employed to juxtapose distinctive Emerald green metallic paint and special Urban Cross graphics. Improvements in styling continue inside also. The cabin is a really nice place in which to spend time. There’s a definite premium feel with a top quality material finish to everything. Based around Allure spec, Urban Cross means you get a wonderfully tactile, bespoke 62
upholstery finish with Emerald green stitching, unique floor mats, and a leather steering wheel. There’s a smart touchscreen multimedia system that features Bluetooth connectivity, DAB digital radio and USB functionality. You get rear-parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, heated door mirrors, along with dual-zone air conditioning and LED lighting. In short, rather a lot of kit for £16,495. Moreover there’s much enjoyment to be had in the simple act of driving this car. Much of this has to do with the punchy and infinitely loveable three cylinder engine, which loves to be revved, is well matched to the five-speed manual gearbox and is able to make surprisingly brisk progress, especially in town. The 2008 uses its 110 bhp and 205 Nm of torque intelligently, never letting performance (0-60 mph: 9.9 seconds; 117 mph top speed) come at the detriment of fuel economy – which is hugely impressive and realistic at 60.1 mpg; I averaged over 55 – or Co2 emissions, which, with a bit of help from a very intuitive Stop/Start system, is listed at 108g/km. With its trademark tiny steering wheel, small overhangs and modest footprint, the 2008 makes mincemeat of everyday maladies, like parallel parking, and is able to poke its handsome nose through even the tightest gaps in traffic. A quirkily designed handbrake lever – described officially as being of “aircraft-
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY 2016
type” – will take a bit of getting used to but soon only adds to what is a very pleasant driving experience. A comfy, well-suspended ride quality contributes considerably also to this sensory satisfaction, as does only minimal cabin noise – most welcome on longer, faster motorway runs. Your passengers will enjoy much about the 2008 too. Considerable head and leg room – front and rear – always goes down well and here is no different. If you want more room still, the rear seats will fold flat and the boot boasts added ease of loading because its floor runs flush to the aperture. Added reassurance for anyone scared of wintery white stuff will be reassured to hear that as standard on the Urban Cross there is Peugeot’s acclaimed Grip Control technology. This system uses electronic driver aids, coupled with special tyres, to offer drivers greater traction and provide exceptional performance all year round, whatever the weather. Whether with weather as mild as ours you’ll need it is another matter, but, like the cavalcade of safety systems woven into the fabric of this 2008, it’s better to have than to have not. One thing is for sure: if you choose to drive and own this car, you’ll definitely be one of the former.
A Truly Tempting TT
BY ROB TAYLOR
LED LIGHTS & 19 INCH WHEELS: THE BREATHTAKINGLY STYLISH AUDI TT
Diesel versus Petrol: it’s an age-old conundrum that has as much potential to amuse and enthuse us (or alternatively cause some of us to snooze and abuse) as the forthcoming Batman Versus Superman blockbuster does. And now thrown into this debate is the breathtakingly stylish Audi TT. It’s now upon me to find out whether opting for the practicality of the as-tested diesel version is a kind of sacrilege right up there with insisting that, yes of course, Batman would win. Surely any sports car like this must be petrol-powered? Well, sales figures say different. In fact, it turns out that today’s TT is so statistically solid that it may even be your next company car. Gulp. Always a favourite with style-conscious drivers since its launch in the late 1990s, the design icon has in its latest third-gen incarnation evolved its form in the spirit of Porsche’s 911 rather than gone back to the drawing board. And from whichever angle you choose to stare, it’s undeniably handsome. This 2.0 TDI Ultra variant starts at just over £30,000, and comes with front-wheel drive and a silky six-speed manual gearbox. Powering the front wheels is a 181 bhp 2-litre diesel engine, borrowed from the Volkswagen Golf GTD. The TT shares the same
magical Volkswagen MQB platform architecture too. But why buy it over the petrol? In a nutshell the answer is in the overwhelmingly compelling numbers. Fuel economy is promised to be 67.3mpg combined and emissions is just 110g/km of CO2. With 280lb ft, this diesel model has more torque than the equivalent 2.0 TFSI petrol and is noticeably cheaper to own than the TTS. It’s also on par too when it comes to 0-60 mph sprint times: 7.1 seconds; 150 mph flat out. You really need only buy the petrol if you are obsessed with noise (this diesel engine can be a tad ‘diesel-esque’ at low speed and start-up [but then it is a diesel! – Ed]) but, since this car is a coupe and not a convertible, there’s really no reason not to buy from the black pump. But let’s move away from this debate for now and concentrate on what every TT buyer gets. In theory at least, a car ought to be bigger than the sum of its parts and when the TT gets out onto the open road one or two key sensory, tactile observations hit home. The ride – even in sporting trim – is very impressive and surprisingly supple given that some older Audi models had a reputation for being too harshly suspended for UK roads. This car floats – instead of crashes – over all but the worst potholes. The S Line package adds
nearly £3,000 and brings sports seats, LED lights – front and rear – and 19in wheels, but it’s worth it. The TT handles smartly too with plenty of front-end grip and even though when it comes to proper driving it’ll never challenge the flamboyance of a Toyota GT86 or Porsche Cayman, who really cares when you are in a ubiquitous traffic jam. Pick a TT and you’ll look fashionable and cool but moreover you’ll be sitting staring at one of the best interiors I’ve ever seen – including those in cars costing three or four times the TT’s modest price tag. The ‘virtual cockpit’ screen, with integrated sat-nav pages and easy music browsing, is a revelation. Much has been made already about the wondrous design of the air vents and the delicious tactility of almost every material used within, so I’ll add nothing more, except to say that it has almost every other manufacturer red-faced. The driving position is spot-on, lowslung enough to be sporty but not uncomfortable enough to make you set the sat-nav to find the nearest osteopath. Instead you’ll just want to play with the endlessly satisfying ‘virtual’ interface until traffic conditions improve and then you’ll want to just drive some more for laughs, because the TT is a really fun car – as a diesel or a petrol. Although diesel TT drivers, I suspect, will have the last laugh.

Why choose Tettenhall College? A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE WITH REMARKABLE OPPORTUNITIES WHERE EVERY PUPIL ACHIEVES THEIR PERSONAL BEST.
Founded in 1863, Tettenhall College is an independent school for boys and girls aged 2 to 18 years. Located on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Tettenhall, the school sits in a beautiful setting of over 30 acres of historic woodlands. With outstanding on-site facilities in a safe and secure environment, pupils are known, taught and nurtured as individuals within a genuine family atmosphere. Pupils thrive in the School’s inspiring and supportive environment. We are proud of the commitment of our staff, and the partnership between the School and parents fosters a unique atmosphere in which our pupils flourish. Children are encouraged and supported in being the very best they can, having a positive mind-set and developing a true sense of self-worth. Manners and courtesy are important; good humour and care for one another central. Through the remarkable opportunities that we offer with extensive extra-curricular activities, pupils are able to discover their own individual talents and interests and pursue them to the best of their abilities. Academically, our small class sizes and focus on the individual’s learning style ensures that our pupils always achieve their personal best. We have a strong 66

reputation for the quality of our teaching throughout our School, from the initial love of learning that is developed in our younger pupils to the A level courses that our Sixth Formers shine in. We make full use of our stunning location with an on-site Forest School, full sized rugby, football and cricket pitches plus a swimming pool and theatre. Lessons are geared to stimulate and stretch pupils at all levels, and teachers effectively gauge individual ability and personal strengths to encourage the fulfilment of every pupil’s potential. All of the key attributes of a highly successful school are to be found in our latest inspection reports. These make reference to outstanding pastoral care, excellent arrangements for welfare, good progress in learning and academic achievement and exemplary pupil behaviour. At the end of their school journey our leavers are equipped with excellent academic qualifications, essential life skills and a lasting set of values. Take the opportunity to take a closer look, we’d love to show you around. To arrange a visit please contact our Admissions team on 01902 751119 or email admissions@tettcoll.co.uk.
