What is Photodynamic Therapy? As a consultant led, nurse treated procedure Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a modern, highly effective treatment for certain types of precancerous lesions as well as nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). Although they are known medically as actinic keratoses, basal cell carcinomas and Bowen’s disease, your doctor might refer to them as AKs and BCCs, or simply ‘lesions’. PDT is a very different way to treat these lesions compared to conventional approaches e.g. cryotherapy (freezing), chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. It takes advantage of the chemical interaction between light and a light-activated substance, leading to a series of chemical reactions resulting in damage and death of tumour cells. What does the treatment involve? The treatment consists of a nurse or consultant applying a cream and dressing to the skin lesion and 3 hours later, shining a pure red light on it. The light and cream targets the lesion cells only leaving the healthy skin unharmed. Only where the two are combined will they treat the abnormal area of your skin. Following your first treatment, the treatment may be repeated approximately 1 week later, depending

on the type of lesion. Usually the specialist will review at 3 months, and advise about any further treatment. PDT has been shown to be a highly effective treatment that does not harm healthy skin. What skin conditions are treated by PDT? • Pre-Cancerous Lesions Actinic Keratoses (AKs) is the term used for pre-cancerous lesions, which are the areas of skin that have been damaged by overexposure to sunlight, causing the skin to grow at an abnormally fast rate. AKs generally appear on the face, arms and hands and are usually reddish-brown in colour with a rough “warty” surface Bowen’s Disease is also a precancerous lesion appearing as slowly enlarging, reddish-pink plaques – usually on sun exposedskin (they can be mistaken for other conditions like psoriasis). If these lesions are left untreated they have the potential to develop into a Squamous-Cell Carcinoma (SCC) • Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Basal-Cell Carcinoma (BCCs) are a type of skin cancer that generally take the form of either a single bump or a series of small, flat bumps. Although it is rare for BCCs to spread to other parts of the body, early treatment of the lesion is very important

What are the benefits of PDT? • Non-invasive procedure, does not require an overnight hospital stay, general anaesthetic or recovery time • Only abnormal cells are treated resulting in minimal or no scarring • It is an easy to perform, nonsurgical procedure, which offers convenience for both patient and specialist • Controlled treatment that only targets affected areas, leaving healthy skin cells intact Options for treating NMSCs aren’t always suitable for every patient. Your GP will need to refer you to one of our consultant dermatologists who will assess whether PDT is the right treatment for your condition. You can be referred for PDT if you are paying for yourself or if you have Private Medical Health Insurance but you will need to confirm with your private healthcare provider if you are covered. To find out more about this new service that is now available or to book an appointment with one of our dermatologists please contact us on 01902 275278. Garden Design The garden is an asset that deserves as much time, effort and money spending on its embellishment and improvement as any other part of the house. The trick is to ‘design’ the garden rather than just ‘let it happen’. For this you need to do some research, watch a few TV programmes, visit garden centres, leaf through some magazines and, if inspiration really fails to strike, consult a garden designer which, in the long run, could be less expensive than you might imagine. In the meantime, start looking at the options. To begin with consider how you want the garden to work for you. Is it to be an open air extension to the house, a ‘playing field’ for the kids, an entertainment centre for your friends, a kitchen garden, or horticultural exhibition piece? On the other hand, you may want something of each. Whatever your decision however, you must think about it carefully so you can approach each part of the project efficiently and economically, otherwise you will be blundering around without a plan which risks you ending up with a formless hotchpotch. First things first. Have you thought about a conservatory? It is the easiest way of incorporating the garden into the home. A conservatory can be extremely useful, as a ‘stepping stone’ into the garden, an extra room for guests, playroom for children, sun lounge, greenhouse or entertainment centre. Conservatories can be bought ‘off the peg’ in kit form, erectable in a day or less, or purpose designed to suit individual requirements. They can be all glass or part brick and part glass depending on the style or period of your house. And if heating is installed they can be as useful in winter as in summer. Next consider a patio. Just as the conservatory can take you smoothly from house to garden so too can a patio. In fact add a patio onto a conservatory and the concept can really be made to work for you. Patios can be formed from paving, bricks or stone blocks. They provide useful hard standing where tables and chairs may stand safely and steadily without sinking into a soft lawn. Place a few imaginatively planted 14

tubs around, make a space for the barbecue and you have the ideal place for al fresco meals for the family or any number of guests. Patios are also ideal places for kiddie’s parties so much easier to clean up the mess! So you have your conservatory and your patio, time to consider the rest of the garden. Think visual impact. There are hundreds of possibilities here. If you want a lawn, don’t just have a rectangular patch with boring borders at the sides and a straight path to the tatty shed at the end of the garden. Forget straight lines, think curves. Put in a water feature here, a rock garden there, a patch of pebbles with an exotic plant. Consider climbers for the boundaries. If that shed is tatty and you can’t get rid, put in a screen of shrubs. If you want a kitchen garden with compost heap, the odd cold frame, etc., that screen will disguise these too. If you opt for a sand pit for the children, remember they will grow up so design it so it can be turned into a flower bed or water feature when that happens. Be prepared to spend that bit more on your plants. The large, mature shrubs

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2014

and well established saplings can cost more but, if planted correctly, they give instant effect to your carefully constructed plan; they can also provide almost instant privacy. Think about lighting. It can enhance the look of your plot in the evening, it can also make using the garden possible after dark, and there is the security aspect. The garden centre will be able to advise you on all of this including soil preparation. If you decide to appoint a designer, you can always opt to be the labourer to cut the costs somewhat. Do remember however, these days a well-planned, well designed and well-appointed garden is about as desirable as a carefully constructed kitchen or luxurious bathroom. Should you decide to sell eventually, it will certainly be a good selling point. It could add several thousands to your asking price. It will certainly ensure a steady stream of potentially interested buyers because as we said before, a garden is a very important part of your property.

My home has been completely transformed by AJG and I cannot believe how smoothly the project has gone. They are so clean and tidy and even though this has been a long project as I have had my total house refurbished including a new conservatory, windows, kitchen, bathroom, shower room, front door, driveway, lighting, flooring & fully decorated, it has been a stress-free enjoyable time. This is down to Alex and all the guys; I would definitely recommend AJG Property Services, to anybody who wants any work carried out on their home.” Liz Whitwell, Penkridge

per Clive Smith p a S n ra te ve rs u o n o h g Street namin Sapper Clive Smith has this week proudly unveiled the name of a new street in Hednesford. As part of a development of 10 affordable homes by The Wrekin Housing Trust, the street has been named Clive Smith Grove in recognition of the sacrifice and determination of the popular war veteran from Cannock. Spr. Smith was injured in 2010 while serving as a bomb disposal expert in Afghanistan; during a search for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) a blast caused injuries that left him a double amputee. Following his recovery, Spr. Smith went on to feature in posters for the 2012 Royal British Legion’s Poppy appeal, helping them to launch their annual appeal in London. His continued focus on the things he can do, rather than those he cannot, has led him to work hard on behalf of military charities. He is currently training hard in preparation for a Brussels to London bike ride for the Battle Back Centre, which The Wrekin Housing Trust has also raised funds for.

Leader of Cannock Chase District Council, Councillor George Adamson, who suggested the street naming, spoke of the event, “Sapper Smith is truly a hero and it is great that we can honour him locally within Cannock Chase District. As a Council, we continue to support our local Armed Forces community and help raise public awareness of the contributions made to our country by those who serve and have served in our Armed Forces. I’m extremely proud to have been involved in such a prestigious occasion”. Sapper Clive Smith said, “I’m honoured to have this street in my home town named after me. Since my injuries I’ve

tried hard to give back to the military charities and help support people that have been less fortunate than myself. It’s brilliant to have this recognition of the work that I have been doing.” Jean Teichmann, Head of Development at The Wrekin Housing Trust said of the event, “The naming of Clive Smith Grove proudly marks this new development, while showing support to a brave and determined man. These houses, together with a ShireLiving extra care scheme, due to open at the end of the year, mean we are able to provide a mixture of housing to meet the needs of those in the Cannock area.”

Following a recent unannounced inspection visit by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), this week Nuffield Health Hospital in Tettenhall, Wolverhampton received a copy of the inspectors’ report which stated that the hospital is meeting all of the essential standards of quality and safety. The visit by the CQC inspectors was part of their routine schedule of inspections of all hospitals across the country, and reviews all aspects of hospital activity with an emphasis on patient care. During the visit the CQC spoke with a range of patients including some who were attending pre-operative and post-operative appointments and others who were accommodated as in-patients. Their report stated that Patients received treatment and care from well trained, polite and knowledgeable staff in clean, comfortable and safe surroundings. The report went on to say that staff focus was on patient comfort and great care was taken to respect peoples’ privacy and dignity. Patients told the inspectors that they received courteous and professional advice before, during and after treatments and that they were offered choices and given options at all stages of their care. Hospital Director Tony Avery said that “I am extremely proud that the work done every day by the hospital staff has been found to be at or above the high standards expected by the CQC. I believe that much of this success is due to our Matron, Gill Fenner and her leadership of our clinical teams and the guidance provided by our Medical Advisory Committee chaired by consultant Mr T Gardecki.”

roof and walls. In 2007 we erected scaffolding to inspect the roof and discovered that the chimneys and the roof needed attention, so we carried out some emergency repairs and left the scaffolding in place to protect the passers-by from any falling tiles. We then opened discussions with English Heritage about what we could and could not do with the building as it is Grade 2* listed. In the early days our views and that of English Heritage and Shropshire Council on what should happen to the building were very different and so discussions were protracted. Eventually by 2011, after a few personnel changes it all came together, grants were agreed in principle, architects chosen, tenders submitted, and eventually work commenced in September 2012 and the old scaffolding was taken down and substantial new scaffolding was erected.

The building that fronts the entrance to the Old Mill Antique Centre is a Grade 2* listed building. A building was first built there in 1670 and part of this still forms part of the present structure. The building was then extended in both the Georgian and Victorian era and it has always been a significant building in the Low town area of Bridgnorth. There are no records to show who built the early house or who lived there for the first 120 years. However whoever lived there in the early years must have 28

travelled widely, because there are remnants of Chinese wall paper that dates in its designs to around 1650. The Ridley family had owned the land and buildings from about 1850, first as Maltsters and then as Seed Merchants and on Friday 13th September 1957 there was a fire and the large Mill Building was seriously damaged and about half of the population of Bridgnorth were on the Castle Walk watching it burn. Luckily the Town House was untouched. My brothers and I bought the land and buildings in 1995 and opened the Old Mill Antique Centre in April 1996, for the first few years we let the ground floor of the Town House as offices, but the house needed a lot of restoration - particularly the

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2014

Halfway through June 2013 the scaffolding was taken down as most of the work had been completed. There was dancing in the street! Our neighbours have had ugly scaffolding spoiling the look of Mill Street for 6 years, and now as the pictures will show they have a very good looking building instead. They have been very patient and I hope they also agree that the building now looks great. The whole of the roof has been retiled with hand made tiles identical to the originals, chimneys have been rebuilt, Georgian sash windows have been restored and the stone work on the front of the building has been repaired and painted. There is still a front door to be fitted as the photo shows this will be fitted soon as the hand carved brackets are finished. Phase 2 of the refurbishment will be when work on the side of the house begins; when more windows will be refurbished and the walls re-rendered and painted. There will still be refurbishing to do on the inside but the building is sound and will be in safe and secure for another 100 years or more‌

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2014

3. Take off the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes and then beat the eggs in one at a time until the mixture becomes smooth and glossy then add the flour beating until it becomes smooth again and then simply pour into your greased and lined baking tin and bake in the oven. It is easier to allow the brownie once cooked to cool completely before turning out of the tin onto a board. Serving Suggestion

Once cooled slice into squares or fingers, put back in the oven on a tray to warm through and serve it with a good quality ice cream and either some fresh berries or make a quick salted caramel sauce by melting 50g of soft dark brown sugar, 50g of golden syrup, 75g of butter and 100ml of double cream adding a pinch of sea salt flakes. www.facebook.com/takefood www.instagram.com/mikewhitehurst_takefood www.twitter.com/takefood mike@takefood.co.uk www.takefood.co.uk

The Swan, Stafford

The Swan Stafford is situated in the heart of Stafford town centre. This 18th Century, former coaching inn offers 31 en-suite bedrooms, award winning restaurant, bar and a coffee shop.

The Swan has recently completed a major refurbishment of the ground floor and all facilities opened for full use again on Friday 28th March. After hearing about the recent make over at The Swan I thought it would be the perfect time to book a table at the brasserie and sample the new surroundings and of course the delicious new menu. My partner and I were rather excited to be going back to The Swan and

arriving early we parked on the car park at the rear of the hotel which is free of charge to residents and diners. As we had a few minutes to spare we put it to good use and looked around at the changes that have taken place. We entered through the rear doors and immediately liked what we saw. Soft lighting, wooden floors and a contemporary feel, yet still keeping traditional features greeted us. As we walked in to the brasserie the first thing that caught our eye was the swan themed lighting. We both commented on how tastefully the transformation of The Swan has been done. We were shown to our table by Aiona who was very helpful and attentive, and remembered us from our previous visit which we thought was a nice touch. The brasserie was already bustling with other diners, not to mention the calm and relaxed atmosphere. We were given the menu and wine list and Aiona also informed us that it was “steak night which we were also given a menu for.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2014

After ordering a bottle of Pinot Grigio, San Antonio – Italy 2013 (£16.50) to share we began to look through the beautiful dishes that were on offer to us. We both stated that we were so glad that we only had a light lunch as we were definitely having three courses this evening! For starters I chose the warm goats cheese served with red onion and chive croquette potatoes, baby beets, wild garlic leaf and rocket (£5.50) and my partner having the baked portobello mushroom served with spinach and Wrekin blue cheese rarebit, garlic parsley panko crumb, brown sauce, russet apple and watercress salad (£5.95).

For our main course I decided on the duck breast served with pak choi, sesame fried noodles and oriental sauce (£14.50) and my partner opting for the 8oz sirloin steak served with mushrooms, tomato, beer battered onion rings and hand cut chips (£19.95). Our starters arrived and looked and tasted delicious! Shortly after, our mains were presented to us and judging by the smiles on our faces we couldn’t wait to begin. My duck and my partner’s steak were cooked beautifully and both dishes had so much texture and flavour, you could tell by our empty plates that we thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was now time to look through the dessert menu but we just couldn’t make our minds up until we came to the sharing dessert board (£13.95) which we both said was a fantastic idea as it gave us a chance to try a little bit of everything. Our dessert arrived on a slate which included pecan pie, chocolate brownie cheesecake, meringue and raspberry roulade, crème brulee and chocolate and honeycomb torte. We both agreed that this was one of the best desserts that we had tried, absolutely delicious! Once again we had a brilliant evening dining at The Swan and we will both be returning very soon!

UltraSlim Clinics UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ Cryolipolysis is the newest body contouring procedure to be offered by UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton to assist clients in achieving a slimmer physique and a smaller waistline. The clinic has seen bookings increase double fold since recent media reviews from celebrities such as Luisa Zissman, Kristina Rihanoff and Casey Bathcelor who admit to having had the new Fat Freezing treatment with amazing results. The Non-Invasive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ procedure eliminates fat without surgery in areas around the hips, thighs, arms, and love handles by freezing stubborn fat cells that live beneath the dermal layer of the skin. Developed in 2005 and backed by strong clinical research and trials, LipoFreeze (Fat Freezing) is based on Cryolipolysis - the use of precisely controlled cooling to remove fat. It is an FDA-approved non-invasive body contouring procedure available to patients with no scarring, no pain and no downtime. It provides permanent results and promises a reduction of the treated area by up to 40% in a single session. A patient will be able to see changes in about three weeks’ time, but dramatic improvement can be appreciated after two to three months. Hanna McCormac at UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton encourages her clients to maintain a healthy lifestyle for optimum results. Hanna says, “I often tell my clients I can remove ‘love handles’, but it’s entirely up to you to maintain this through diet and lifestyle. I find the majority of my clients follow the good aftercare advice given as the results achieved often provide clients with the motivation needed to change their lifestyle in order to maintain these.” With their exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device, UltraSlim 38

Clinics now provide the same quality treatments as London’s Harley Street Clinics only at a fraction of the cost. Hanna explains how. “Our exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device uses 4 hand pieces, unlike most other clinics including the top clinics in London which only use 1 hand piece, therefore we are able to treat larger or 4 different areas simultaneously which means you receive more value for money in addition to reducing the need to return for more treatments. It’s because of this technology and capability that we can offer the most cost effective Cryolipolysis treatments in the Midlands. In addition, our clients can also benefit from having our UltraSlim Lipo™ Cavitation & Radio Frequency treatments at the very same time, which provides instant results to target other areas of unwanted excess fat.” Aside from Fat Freezing Treatments, the clinic in Berry Street, Wolverhampton also offers other anti-aging solutions through their wide range of non-invasive and skin care services including Ultrasound Cavitation and Radio Frequency (RF) treatments to target excess fat, cellulite, Stretch Marks and Tighten Loose Skin on body or face. The

s at Kate te u in m 0 9 r fo ss li b Pure l – By Sharon Caldwel re a c in k S ry a e McG Having booked a luxury facial rejuvenation massage with Kate McGeary Skincare, which sounded like 90 minutes of pure bliss. Upon entering the purpose built therapy room in Wimblebury I was taken aback to how calm and peaceful the room was. Kate made me feel very relaxed and comfortable on the heated bed, and after a long stressful day this was just what I needed! Kate talked me through the facials and they are all based on Facial Rejuvenation Massage, otherwise known as the ‘natural facelift’. Facial Rejuvenation is a gentle, non-invasive facial massage technique. It works mainly by freeing up the constrictions within the facial muscles and connective tissue that can be caused by the day to day stresses and strains that we all experience. Kate uses the award-winning Neal’s Yard Remedies skincare range in her facials. The products use beautiful natural ingredients such as rosehip oil, jojoba and the essential oil frankincense, all proven to help promote healthy skin and delay the signs of ageing. The products are organic and are 100% free of parabens and synthetic chemicals. Kate started my facial and within minutes my stressful day was in the back of mind, after about 10 minutes I was fully relaxed and was drifting away and soon asleep!

Once Kate had completed my facial she left me to get ready at my own pace, which was great as I was so relaxed I needed a few minutes to fully function. My skin felt so bouncy and looked glowing. Kate had prepared an aftercare pack which had lots of samples which I will definitely be testing. I really enjoyed my facial, and I would recommend to anyone who wants a luxury facial in calm, comfortable surroundings to pay Kate a visit.

or The Summer? F in k S ss le w la F l fu ti Want Beau Look no further than Heaven organic skincare. Heaven products contain only the finest ingredients, which are also free from parabens, mineral oils and have not been animal tested. Although this may seem unimportant, ingredients in skincare products are absorbed into the body. Cheaper brands which are non-organic may contain harmful chemicals, additives and pesticides. There has been evidence produced to suggest a link between parabens and cancer. Heaven products and treatments are now available in some of the finest Spas around the world and have a large celebrity following including: Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kylie Minogue, Dannii Minogue, Emilia Fox, Michelle Pfeiffer, Katie Price, Victoria Beckham, Josephine Markham, Melinda Messenger and Paul Sculfor, to name a few. The signature facial from the Heaven repertoire is the Bee Sting Facial. This facial has been responsible for the amazing transformation of the Duchess of Cornwall. After years of neglecting her skincare, there was much work to do. She is now a firm fan of Heaven’s products and specifically the Bee Sting Facial treatment, so much so, that she recommended the Bee Venom products to Kate Middleton prior to her wedding. Our clients are always amazed by the Bee Sting Facial. It is so much more than a facial, providing many benefits to the recipient including:

Relaxation The Bee Sting Facial takes relaxation to another level. A combination of exotic aromas, deep massage techniques, heated massage couch and candle lit room ensure our clients leave feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Relief of Muscle Tension Muscle tension is relieved from the face, scalp, upper arms, shoulders, upper back, neck and feet using various massage techniques and carefully blended organic oils.

Lymphatic Drainage The facial massage ensures that excess fluid and toxins are drained to the lymph nodes. An added benefit is that sinus congestion can be alleviated.

Skin Tightening The deep massage techniques promotes skin tightening and reduction of lines and wrinkles due to the increase in circulation and lifting effect of the massage action.

Natural Botox The bee venom ingredient acts as natural botox and promotes production of collagen and elastin within the skin. This gives a more youthful look to the skin as it becomes firmer and lines and wrinkles are smoothed.

Glowing, Younger Looking Skin Oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin are increased through the stimulation of massage. Old dead skin is removed via a mild fruit glycolic exfoliant to reveal living, healthy skin. Although the Bee Sting Facial is primarily an anti-ageing facial, the products are effective for a number of conditions including, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, blackheads and acne. Facials are repeated once a month and aftercare products are recommended to maintain results. We also offer prescriptive Heaven facials for clients with specific skin complaints and mini facials for those with a busy calendar. Our facials can cater for all skins types, ages and genders. 42

’s Day International Women Members of SI Cannock & District joined members from other clubs within Midland Chase Region to mark International Women’s Day on March 8th by holding a conference to raise awareness and understanding of Female Genital Mutilation, or FGM.

Maimuna Jawo

The event was informative and at times emotional, even harrowing. There were 4 speakers: Lilli Loveday from “28 Too Many” spoke of the work of the charity in the 28 countries in Africa where FGM, or cutting, is prevalent. Antonia Bright from Working for Justice gave information on the Asylum process in this country – many women escaping their country of birth because of the practice of FGM seek asylum here, their path is not an easy one. Carol McCormick spoke of the issue from the perspective of women in the UK and the difficulties they face, she is a midwife and Senior Practitioner for FGM in Nottingham. The most emotional speaker was Maimuna Jawo, a Ugandan woman who has been in this country for a while and is currently seeking asylum here. She is ‘the cutter’ for her tribe at home and wishes to stop the practice; she

is an incredibly brave woman who has been interviewed and reported on TV and in the press. Her story affected everyone who heard it. FGM is a cultural practice, not religious in any way; it is totally harmful to girls and women with no medical benefits whatsoever. It has been illegal in this country since 1985. Until one week ago, even though there have been many reports to the Police and other agencies, there have been no prosecutions; two people have been charged with carrying out this illegal practice in the last few days All clubs within Midland Chase Region will be focusing on this issue over the coming months to raise awareness and to work towards stopping the practice. hin Sp Ask The Podiatrist: S Shin Splints is a common term for shin pain during exercise. It can be a misleading term and most medical professionals try to avoid using it. This is because shin pain and ‘Shin Splints’ can be due to several different conditions. One of the most common shin conditions that is frequently labelled ‘Shin Splints’ is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome. Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome has been classified into two distinct types, which affect specific tissues on the inside of the shin: • Type One This is characterised by a stress reaction on the inside border of the shin bone. A stress reaction is a preceding stage to a stress fracture. • Type Two This is characterised by irritation of the outer surface (periosteum) of the inside of the shin bone at the point where the Soleus and Tibialis Posterior muscles attach. 44

Shin Splints Treatment People suffering from Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome will feel pain on the inner border of the shin (medial Tibial border) during and following exercise. Most patients respond well to nonoperative treatment. This involves rest, strengthening and stretching exercises, followed by a gradual return to exercise after symptoms subside. In order to help prevent recurrence of the condition, a bio-mechanical analysis (an analysis of posture at rest and during walking and running) with a chiropodist/ podiatrist can be very useful. This will pick up any factors that may be making a person susceptible to Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, so that they can be corrected before a return to activity. Muscle imbalance and leg length inequality are frequent causes of mal-alignment that can be picked up during an assessment. A common cause of Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is pes planus (flat feet) or pronated foot position (a lowered arch). These would be identified during bio-mechanical

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2014

analysis. Over pronation is the uncontrolled lowering of the arch of the foot during motion. This puts increased strain on the Tibialis Posterior muscle which pulls on the inside of the shin and can produce pain. Arch supporting Orthotics/insoles can be very effective in remedying this problem.

t Who Joined n e d tu S 2 1 r a e Y r lo y Philippa Ta ears Old Y 3 e g A 9 9 9 1 In l o o h The Sc I clearly recall my first day at Chase Grammar School although back then it was Chase Academy. I was in Nursery and the welcome I had was so wonderful that the days flew by. I would only drink juice, but the headmistress at the time exclaimed that I would drink water. Now I drink it all the time. The discipline to be respectful and polite at just 2 years and 11 months, has carried on through my life. The teaching methods were fun, but productive and the encouragement to read and write at a young age certainly aided me for the future, accelerating my development. There was a time called play and discovery which built on social skills, communication to work out what the objects related to outside of school life. Through Reception, Year 1 and 2, the sporting activities consisted of dance, swimming, interesting ball and bean bag games. This highlights where my passion for sport roots from, finding it effortless to perform the tasks set. Through these years we were taught story writing, simple arithmetic, spelling and some of the early times tables. This enabled me to gain an advantage straight away leading up to my GCSEs, knowing I would not lack knowledge, learning the required syllabus and utilising my time better. At sports days, we were taught sportsmanship and respect for other people, the races were simple but effective as it highlighted my competitive streak, allowing myself to push for more. The sportsmanship granted me control over how I reacted at an early stage, which has helped me to become a top level athlete. 46

Philippa archery - Philippa has gone from strength to strength with her passion for archery, representing England and winning many competitions

As a whole, we were taught to care for each other, share our belongings with each other and to this day I remember people’s birthdays I have lost touch with. As we went through the years we were taught to give and look after each other. For example non uniform day, sponsored walks where a specific charity a year gets all the raised money. At Christmas there was always a Nativity performance at St.Luke’s church Cannock, playing Mary was the highlight and that Joseph would not hold my hand. We also performed for the residential home

who enjoyed our performance. There were also solos sung for once in Royal David’s City which boosted confidence for boys to sing, showing nobody would discriminate, giving them free will. To add to this school plays are performed down to year 1 to develop communication, acting and confidence at a young age. This has lead me to reading in church with ease in front of 400 people. From years 3-6 we were given the chance to play team sports like, hockey, netball, rounders, football and cricket against other teams, developing team building, producing a team player. The turn of captain was passed around through each match to give the responsibilities to all students, this allowed us to analyse who played the best and we were allowed an input to whom received player of the match. From these year groups we had inter house competitions which further developed our sportsmanship abilities not just in a sporting situation but a life like one. Encouraged to sing, dance and play an instrument, enhanced a proactive lifestyle to improve skills, trying to find our talents individually. Having school concerts in front of the school portrayed the message the school wanted, no matter how good or bad you are at your instruments it’s the taking part that counts. This message radiates through all years as house points are up for grabs if you take part, every house point counts in who wins the house shield!

Jackie Williams

Headmistress of Chase Grammar When asked to write more about school for local magazines I wondered just how much people would want to read what the Headmistress says. It struck me that since our children take visitors around on Open day and tell our visitors all about the school, it might be more interesting to ask what the children think. The text from Pip landed on my desk and I was impressed that she had managed to fit it in at this busy time. I wondered whether to edit what she has written but in the end decided that Pip tells it as it is. She has experienced most of her life here and knows that it is like to grow up here. When she first joined us Pip was so small that we had to stack two chairs together so that she could reach the dining table. Now she is a young woman making choices about university. She has made the most of her opportunities here and as she begins to think about where she will go next I am pleased that she will look back at her time here

with such positive and fond Philippa aged memories. We 3 on two chairs are also sure that she will leave with the best academic results that she could achieve. Academically our students do well with our A Level results consistently placing us at the top of the league tables. This is a result of much work and very early on we begin by focussing on basic skills. We make sure that the foundations are secure before we begin to build on them. We know our children well and later on we are able to tailor the curriculum to create the best course for each child. However, there is more to an education than results. It is about developing the whole person and it is about getting children to recognise their own strengths and skills and putting them to good use. There are ample opportunities here and in the same way that life is very much about getting out what we put in, children get out of school what they put in. What we do is encourage them and tell them that they can do it, they just need to try.

Above all I’ve spent 15 years of my life here and it’s been very enjoyable, I now wish I could go back to these years, however I’m glad they have been good and worth the money my parents paid for. 01952 321334 | WWW.STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK.CO.UK

Company Car Tax Company cars are a common employee benefit, despite UK company car tax being substantial. Special company car tax rules also affect the employer’s tax position. Both employer and employee should take the cost of company car tax into account when deciding whether to provide company cars and how to deal with the cost of fuel.

Company car tax – benefits for employees Employees pay company car tax based on the list price of the car, its emissions and type of fuel. The list price is multiplied by a percentage (based on the emissions and fuel type) to work out the value of the company car tax benefit that is subject to income tax. The percentage varies between 10 and 35%, with lower percentages of zero (for zero-emission electric cars). Vans are also subject to company car tax if there is any private use other than simply driving between home and work. Van drivers are taxed on a flat £3,000 benefit. There are a few exceptions. Employees (other than company directors) with total earnings below £8,500 will not pay company car tax. In addition, company car tax is not charged on pool cars or company cars used exclusively for business.

Company car tax – fuel An employer can reimburse an employee for the cost of fuel used for business travel or they can use a mileage rate. If the employee is reimbursed using the HM Revenue & Customs advisory fuel rates, there are no tax implications. Advisory fuel rates are published four times a year, based on petrol prices and the average fuel efficiencies of cars grouped by engine size. Higher mileage rates must be justified or a liability to tax and National Insurance contributions will arise. If fuel is also provided for private use, there is an additional company car tax on this extra benefit. The value of the car fuel benefit is calculated as the fuel benefit multiplier multiplied by the same percentage as used for the company car tax. For vans, the taxable fuel benefit is set at a flat rate.

Company car tax for employers Employers pay Class 1A National Insurance contributions on the taxable value of the company car tax benefit and the company car fuel benefit. The capital allowances available for company car purchases depend on the car’s level of emissions. The higher the emission, the more you pay. For emissions below 95g/ km (2013-14), there is a 100% first year allowance. Company cars purchased by the self-employed are treated differently. Unless the car is exclusively used for business, the allowances you can claim are reduced in proportion to the level of private use. If a company car is leased, the full lease costs are an allowable expense for emissions below 160 g/km. Otherwise, only some of the costs are allowable. VAT can be recovered on business fuel only. If you provide fuel for private use and want to reclaim VAT 48

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2014

on all the fuel purchased, you must pay a fuel scale charge — again, based on the level of emissions. VAT can only be recovered on purchases if the car is exclusively for business use. 50% of the VAT on leasing company cars can be recovered, or 100% if the car is exclusively for business use.

Company car tax planning Company car tax may mean that it is more tax-effective for employees to use their own cars and be reimbursed. You can pay up to HMRC’s approved mileage rate (45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile thereafter) without any tax or National Insurance being due. If you are going to provide a company car, clearly a lowemissions vehicle is more tax-efficient. The value of the benefit is increased by including additional non-taxable extras: maintenance, servicing and repairs; Vehicle Excise Duty (commonly referred to as ‘road tax’); and insurance. Think carefully about whether it is worth providing fuel for private use. The tax can easily outweigh the value of this benefit for the employee, while the cost to the business of paying for the fuel can make this an expensive benefit to offer. It’s worth taking advice on the full tax implications of offering company cars and whether to lease or buy – the rules become stricter year-on-year to encourage businesses and individuals to buy and drive more environmentally-friendly cars. For more information about company car tax or any other tax issues please contact the team at DSN Accountants Ltd.

Range 14 0 2 w e N d n ra B ’s g n Samsu ebbs of LED Televisions at W Samsung’s brand new 2014 range of LED televisions, Soundbars and Blu-ray players has landed at Webbs and as usual with Samsung the new range doesn’t disappoint. As ever the design of the product is stunning including, of course, the new TV range with Ultra slim bezels and extremely thin profiles. They look as good switched off as they do working. Of Course a products about more than its visual impact. It needs to perform brilliantly, be a pleasure to use and to be reliable too. The new 2014 Samsung range wins on all fronts. Mark Tranter, Store Manager at Webbs, explains ”Samsung have some amazing new technology and have put some top end technology from last year on more affordable models in their 2014 range. An example of this is the quad core processor which is now on their 6 series TV range.

50

This gives the customer a superior picture, speeds up the TV when using the SMART facilities and lets the customer use various SMART facilities at once. People love it” “There is one big, massive really, jump in technology this year. Ultra High Definition, or 4K, TV. It gives 4 times the level of detail possible on even the best Full high definition TV’s. Put simply it’s breathtaking”. Mark says “we’re really excited by UHD at Webb’s, it’s fabulous; people will be really bowled over. Its taylor made for a top quality independent retailer like us as people will want guidance, a proper demonstration, and a professional installation. It’s no good going to one of the sheds where people are either left alone to pick themselves, and maybe regret their choice later, or pestered to extend their guarantee. Lots of our Samsung TV’s have a free 5 year warranty anyway.”

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2014

A twist this year is the new curved LED screens available. ”A lot of our customers will really love the curved sets, the curve is very gentle, they can be wall mounted, but it does add something.” New to Samsung is wireless audio, but although only just launching, the products are picking up awards. Mark says ”having top quality hifi around the house without wires has really taken off, it’s booming. The new Samsung models are top quality, they look and sound great, and they offer some features the competition can’t match. I’d urge anyone to come in and have a listen.” So once again another superb line up from Samsung with some technological and stylistic leaps this year. Just pop in to Webbs for a look or a chat and demonstration. You’ll not be disappointed.

h Castle Visit Tamrtwvaonrt der Does By Robe

Tamworth Castle promises a great day out for the family. With over 900 years of history, the Norman motte and bailey castle offers an informative and exciting visitor experience and somehow manages to retain an atmosphere from the very distant Medieval past.

52

A castle was first constructed on this site in Saxon times, in the year 913, on the orders of Ethelfleda, the Mercian queen. Strategically perched atop a hill, overlooking the Lady Bridge and the confluence of the River Anker and the River Tame, the castle acted as both a fortress to defend against the Vikings and a residence for the Mercian kings. Today there is little remaining of this original castle, as it was essentially knocked down, rebuilt and enlarged by the Normans very soon after their invasion of 1066. Considered one of the best-preserved motte and bailey castles in England, the exact construction of the greater part of today’s Tamworth Castle is believed to date back to 1070 and was finished some time in the 12th century. Its motte is the second largest in Britain after that of Windsor Castle. Following the death of Robert Despenser, steward to William the Conquerer, castle ownership fell into the hands of the Marmion family of Normandy, who were in possession of it for

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2014

six generations up to 1294. When in 1215 the 4th Robert Marmion of Tamworth Castle, who was the equivalent to the Chief Justice of the time, deserted King John and threw his support behind the French king, John had Robert’s lands confiscated and his son imprisoned and he ordered the demolition of Tamworth Castle. The castle was only partially demolished before Robert’s sons were able to regain their father’s lands following his death one year later. As the last of the Marmion’s died without leaving an heir in 1294, Tamworth Castle passed into the hands of the Freville family from Cambridgeshire, who held the castle until 1423. While the castle still today presents a mostly Norman identity, the perfectly intact ancient labyrinthine walkways, rooms, halls and chambers also bear the mark of more recent influences from the Tudors, Jacobeans and Victorians. After a centuries-long period of residence by the Ferrers family, it was the Townshend family who made the

last significant improvements to the castle in 1781. The castle was loaned out to tenants, including Robert Peel and Thomas Cooke during the nineteenth century and on the death of the latter in 1891, the Marquess Townshend put the property up for sale by auction and it was purchased by the Tamworth Corporation. Today, Tamworth Castle is one of Staffordshire’s top tourist attractions. Visitors can discover the essence of Medieval life by taking a tour through the Great Hall, watching re-enactments of history and displays put on by the castle staff and chatting with the Lady of the house, the footman, cooks, maids, and butlers. Children can have fun dressing up in clothing from throughout the ages and putting themselves in the Tudor and Stuart stocks and chambers. Outside, in the landscaped gardens alongside the river is a children’s play area and the view from the top of the castle is memorable. Tamworth Castle is found in the middle of Tamworth town centre,

10 minutes’ walk from the railway station. It is generally open from April to September between Tuesday and Sunday from 11.30am to 4.45pm. Between October and March it

opens on Saturdays and Sundays between 11.30am and 3.45pm. A word of warning: accessing the castle involves climbing a lot of steps!

Buxton’s Ltd In the current economic climate many local retailers are struggling and many long established names have gone out of business. It is nice to find one local company that is thriving.

In recognition of Buxton’s high service levels and exceptional showroom and workshop facilities the company has been appointed an authorised main dealer for both John Deere and Honda. This allows Buxton’s to offer a wider range of top quality garden machinery at even better prices.

Buxton’s Ltd is a family firm that have been supplying lawnmowers and other garden machinery for 50 years. From their site on the edge of Cannock Chase the company has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the major suppliers of mowers in the midlands.

Buxton’s continual growth is due in part to their main road location on the A34 between Cannock and Stafford, but also their belief in the traditional values of excellent customer service and good value for money. Buxton’s offers garden and forestry machinery from all of the major brands. Apart from John Deere and Honda the company are agents for Stihl, Husqvarna, Mountfield, Hayter, Countax, Stiga, Bosch and Atco, . These top brands are backed up by factory trained mechanics who can carry out any servicing or repairs necessary. Buxton’s supplies mowers to suit every lawn and every budget, as well as a complete range of garden machinery, including blowers, brushcutters , hedgetrimmers , shredders , cultivators and log splitters. All of

these machines are designed to make those garden chores quick and easy. You can even part exchange your old machine in towards a brand new one. Buxton’s ltd are specialists, and in the age of large impersonal national retailers it is refreshing to find a company that prizes good customer service above everything else.

rban) Jungle Welcome tobythRoeb (U Taylor Forest-dwelling Subaru Forester is taken deep into the heart of the city by Rob Taylor to find out how the 4x4 off-road warrior legend can cut it out of its comfort zone. From atop my lofty, regal driving throne I observe all fellow road-users with a serenity not otherwise known to me on the notorious rush hour scramble into Birmingham’s grim and dirty heart of darkness. Typically I am the Devil’s own driver; hell-bent on getting the madmen I carry inside me from point-topoint along the optimum route, in the quickest time. I am unyielding to the aggressive, intolerant of the sluggish and indecisive, indifferent to the needy on foot, and disdainful of the contemptible collective on public transport.

62

STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK OUTLOOK||MAY/JUNE MAY/JUNE2014 2014 STAFFORDSHIRE

However, oddly, I’m not today. For on this particular journey, despite having as my carriage a vehicle so utterly incongruous and superficially at least - unfeasibly inappropriate for such a driving environment, I have metamorphosed into being more chilled-out and relaxed than the bastard progeny of The Dude from The Big Lebowski and the Dalai Lama: I wave through nuns waiting to pull out of side-turnings; allow buses to rejoin traffic; wait and flash my lights to oncoming motorists whenever there’s a shortage of space; toot my horn approvingly at passing cyclists; hum along happily to even the most facile idiocy on

Radio 1 and find myself smiling a lot more of the time. No, not like the slack-jawed gawker staring back at me from the rear of the bus, but because today I am Cliff Richard: the Christian motorist. And I can only credit this sudden conversion from the dark side to the fact that today I am driving the new Subaru Forester XT; the SUV which is commonly known to defy the trend for 4x4s to be just city-dwelling poser-mobiles; thought to be a short-on-style utilitarian off-road workhorse and moreover, usually a diesel. But this one isn’t. This new Forester is not what you think it is. It’s better. And it makes you feel good. I chuckle to myself, as I genuflect at the sight of the Forester’s formidable side-profile and funky, monster alloy wheels reflected back from the glass-fronted shop fronts, while driving at a rate of speed more typical of the biggest poseur rapper while ‘cruisin’ in da hood’ on MTV. The Forester is now a handsome machine - especially in white. And although I may now be prone to pose at a snail’s pace, this is by no means a slow car: 0-62 mph in 7.5 seconds; a mighty 240 bhp from the 2 litre petrol engine.

Powerful is available at all times courtesy of 258 lb ft of torque and a hefty turbo, always being delivered seamlessly through the CVT automatic transmission; every gear up-change is particularly smooth on a light throttle and - more crucially - every down-shift, just the same. But if you are in a hurry, this Forester will keep pace with most things on the road; if things get twisty, it handles with considerable composure considering its bulk and it’ll do it all without emptying both its fuel tank and your wallet too quickly, returning as it does 33.2 mpg on the combined cycle. So the big-selling Forester is as at home in the urban jungle as any Evoque and, since its release last year it’s been picking up offroad plaudits left and right from the specialist motoring press, so its evidently still pretty nifty off-road too. Just beware of those alloys. Inside the story remains the same: a considerable improvement over the out-going model. Plastics are softer-to-touch yet still feel robust; the dashboard configuration is immediately intelligible and, in this spec at least, it’s packed with electronic goodies like rain-sensing wipers, heated seats, rear-parking cameras and hill-start technology. Today’s cars are as intelligent as KITT from Knight Rider used to be and the Subaru is no different and it only costs just over £30,000. But it’s not all just futuristic kit and attention-grabbing aesthetics, all of the sensible and practical elements remain too: there’s a five-year, 100,000 warranty, All-Wheel Drive Technology, high-scoring safety marks from NCAP and a renowned reputation for reliability and durability. The Forester is now a beautiful bridge between style and off-road guile: the Everyman’s car which is every bit the car for every occasion.
