What is Photodynamic Therapy? As a consultant led, nurse treated procedure Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a modern, highly effective treatment for certain types of precancerous lesions as well as nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). Although they are known medically as actinic keratoses, basal cell carcinomas and Bowen’s disease, your doctor might refer to them as AKs and BCCs, or simply ‘lesions’. PDT is a very different way to treat these lesions compared to conventional approaches e.g. cryotherapy (freezing), chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. It takes advantage of the chemical interaction between light and a light-activated substance, leading to a series of chemical reactions resulting in damage and death of tumour cells. What does the treatment involve? The treatment consists of a nurse or consultant applying a cream and dressing to the skin lesion and 3 hours later, shining a pure red light on it. The light and cream targets the lesion cells only leaving the healthy skin unharmed. Only where the two are combined will they treat the abnormal area of your skin. Following your first treatment, the treatment may be repeated approximately 1 week later, depending

on the type of lesion. Usually the specialist will review at 3 months, and advise about any further treatment. PDT has been shown to be a highly effective treatment that does not harm healthy skin. What skin conditions are treated by PDT? • Pre-Cancerous Lesions Actinic Keratoses (AKs) is the term used for pre-cancerous lesions, which are the areas of skin that have been damaged by overexposure to sunlight, causing the skin to grow at an abnormally fast rate. AKs generally appear on the face, arms and hands and are usually reddish-brown in colour with a rough “warty” surface Bowen’s Disease is also a precancerous lesion appearing as slowly enlarging, reddish-pink plaques – usually on sun exposedskin (they can be mistaken for other conditions like psoriasis). If these lesions are left untreated they have the potential to develop into a Squamous-Cell Carcinoma (SCC) • Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Basal-Cell Carcinoma (BCCs) are a type of skin cancer that generally take the form of either a single bump or a series of small, flat bumps. Although it is rare for BCCs to spread to other parts of the body, early treatment of the lesion is very important

What are the benefits of PDT? • Non-invasive procedure, does not require an overnight hospital stay, general anaesthetic or recovery time • Only abnormal cells are treated resulting in minimal or no scarring • It is an easy to perform, nonsurgical procedure, which offers convenience for both patient and specialist • Controlled treatment that only targets affected areas, leaving healthy skin cells intact Options for treating NMSCs aren’t always suitable for every patient. Your GP will need to refer you to one of our consultant dermatologists who will assess whether PDT is the right treatment for your condition. You can be referred for PDT if you are paying for yourself or if you have Private Medical Health Insurance but you will need to confirm with your private healthcare provider if you are covered. To find out more about this new service that is now available or to book an appointment with one of our dermatologists please contact us on 01902 275278. We are happy to announce that Sharon & Michelle Caldwell, from the Staffordshire Outlook completed their first marathon and lived to tell the story! On the 6th April 2014 on a cold wet Sunday morning we travelled to Manchester to run the Greater Manchester Marathon. We both cannot believe after months of hard winter training that’s we ran 26.2 miles, and got the medal! The only thing that kept us going was the fact that we were running for a great charity, being Compton Hospice. We are proud to announce that we raised £850.00! We want to personally thank some of the businesses and individuals who have generously sponsored us, and helped us to raise this amount, without you we wouldn’t be as proud as we both are!

Three lucky winners can each win 2 tickets for 20th Century Boy on Monday 30th June at 7.30pm 20th Century Boy rocks the Grand Theatre’s stage from Monday 30th June to Saturday 5th July. This brand new musical, inspired by the life of rock legend Marc Bolan, explodes onto stage nearly 40 years after the star’s tragic death. Featuring some of the greatest pop songs ever written, 20th Century Boy tells the story of Marc Bolan and his band T Rex, exposing some of the myths and taking the audience on a tearful yet joyful journey through Marc’s fascinating life. Rocker, poet, electric warrior, king of glam and godfather of punk, Bolan was arguably the biggest rock star the UK had ever seen. ‘Bigger than The Beatles’ the media said. Before his tragic death in 1977, just days short of his 30th birthday, Bolan lived life at breakneck speed creating a series of iconic images, a string of number 1 hits, and an army of obsessive fans. Packed with all T Rex’s 70s hits, staged by Gary Lloyd (Thriller Live) and with a West End cast, 20th Century Boy is a glorious story and a celebration of Glam rock at its colourful best.

Garden Design The garden is an asset that deserves as much time, effort and money spending on its embellishment and improvement as any other part of the house. The trick is to ‘design’ the garden rather than just ‘let it happen’. For this you need to do some research, watch a few TV programmes, visit garden centres, leaf through some magazines and, if inspiration really fails to strike, consult a garden designer which, in the long run, could be less expensive than you might imagine. In the meantime, start looking at the options. To begin with consider how you want the garden to work for you. Is it to be an open air extension to the house, a ‘playing field’ for the kids, an entertainment centre for your friends, a kitchen garden, or horticultural exhibition piece? On the other hand, you may want something of each. Whatever your decision however, you must think about it carefully so you can approach each part of the project efficiently and economically, otherwise you will be blundering around without a plan which risks you ending up with a formless hotchpotch. First things first. Have you thought about a conservatory? It is the easiest way of incorporating the garden into the home. A conservatory can be extremely useful, as a ‘stepping stone’ into the garden, an extra room for guests, playroom for children, sun lounge, greenhouse or entertainment centre. Conservatories can be bought ‘off the peg’ in kit form, erectable in a day or less, or purpose designed to suit individual requirements. They can be all glass or part brick and part glass depending on the style or period of your house. And if heating is installed they can be as useful in winter as in summer. Next consider a patio. Just as the conservatory can take you smoothly from house to garden so too can a patio. In fact add a patio onto a conservatory and the concept can really be made to work for you. Patios can be formed from paving, bricks or stone blocks. They provide useful hard standing where tables and chairs may stand safely and steadily without sinking into a soft lawn. Place a few imaginatively planted 14

tubs around, make a space for the barbecue and you have the ideal place for al fresco meals for the family or any number of guests. Patios are also ideal places for kiddie’s parties so much easier to clean up the mess! So you have your conservatory and your patio, time to consider the rest of the garden. Think visual impact. There are hundreds of possibilities here. If you want a lawn, don’t just have a rectangular patch with boring borders at the sides and a straight path to the tatty shed at the end of the garden. Forget straight lines, think curves. Put in a water feature here, a rock garden there, a patch of pebbles with an exotic plant. Consider climbers for the boundaries. If that shed is tatty and you can’t get rid, put in a screen of shrubs. If you want a kitchen garden with compost heap, the odd cold frame, etc., that screen will disguise these too. If you opt for a sand pit for the children, remember they will grow up so design it so it can be turned into a flower bed or water feature when that happens. Be prepared to spend that bit more on your plants. The large, mature shrubs

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE/JULY 2014

and well established saplings can cost more but, if planted correctly, they give instant effect to your carefully constructed plan; they can also provide almost instant privacy. Think about lighting. It can enhance the look of your plot in the evening, it can also make using the garden possible after dark, and there is the security aspect. The garden centre will be able to advise you on all of this including soil preparation. If you decide to appoint a designer, you can always opt to be the labourer to cut the costs somewhat. Do remember however, these days a well-planned, well designed and well-appointed garden is about as desirable as a carefully constructed kitchen or luxurious bathroom. Should you decide to sell eventually, it will certainly be a good selling point. It could add several thousands to your asking price. It will certainly ensure a steady stream of potentially interested buyers because as we said before, a garden is a very important part of your property.

Dedication stage group shows, left to right: Jim Bullock, Right Revd Nigel McCulloch, Cllr Pat Ansell, Mike Mellor

and there were hugs and tears. Comments afterwards showed how much everyone appreciates this memorial which provides a fitting tribute to those who worked in the Cannock Chase Coalfield.

Dedication people: shows some of the crowds present at the service

Saturday afternoon, 26th April 2014 saw the sun shine on the dedication service for Phase 3 of the Mining Memorial in Hednesford Town Centre. Upwards of 1200 people gathered from 1.00pm around the clock tower and Davy Lamp in the gardens on Market Street, Hednesford. There were obviously a lot of local people there but also those who had travelled many miles: from Portsmouth, Hereford, Shrewsbury, Wellington – and more we are not aware of. The music from Rugeley Power Station Band was a fitting accompaniment before the service began as people located the bricks they had purchased to remember their loved ones. Cllr Pat Ansell, the current Chair of CHAPS, welcomed everyone to the service and made special mention of CHAPS member Mike Mellor who designed and project managed all 3 phases. She then introduced the Right Revd Nigel McCulloch, KCVO, formerly Bishop of Manchester, who led the service of dedication. In his address Bishop Nigel spoke of the tremendous role all those involved in the mining industry had played in the life of the community in and around the Cannock Chase Coalfields. Mr Anthony Winterton, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire read the lesson, a passage from the book of Revelation, and Jim 20

Bullock, local man, retired miner and lay preacher spoke in his own inimitable way of some of the things he remembered – everyone nodding and smiling as they brought back their own memories – before he read a poem written by Julie Shires: “A Tribute to the Miners”. Music was provided not only by the Band but also by Cannock Chase Orpheus Male Choir who led the hymn singing and preformed three pieces, including the miners hymn “Take Me Home” which never fails to bring a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye. Unfortunately Dr Tony Wright, Chair of CHAPS from 2003 – 2010, was not able to be present as he was unwell but he asked that Mike Mellor take his place to give the final words on the day. In those words Mike said how proud he was of the memorial, of those who had played a part in its construction and development, of all who had worked within the mining industry or whose lives had been a part of it but particularly of all the people who were present at the dedication, showing that true community spirit is strong in the local area. This brought a big round of applause! He also said that this memorial sees the fulfilment of a promise he made to his miner Uncle, Horace Tranter, to provide something locally to commemorate the mining industry. The ceremony was very emotional; there were smiles and laughter

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE/JULY 2014

Sales of the book “A Lasting Tribute” were a huge success on the day with orders taken for further copies. The supplement “A Lasting Tribute – Phase 3” containing the names on the 913 bricks laid this year were given to those who had purchased the book previously or were given with new books purchased. CHAPS Committee are grateful to Cannock Chase District Council and Hednesford Town Council for their part in ensuring the success of the memorial and the dedication service and continue to be gratified by the response the memorial generates. If you haven’t visited, please do – you are almost guaranteed to meet others there who have a story to tell about one of the 3, 534 persons named on the bricks.

Stafford British Heart Foundation store is appealing for volunteers help in the fight against heart disease. Stafford British Heart Foundation (BHF) Furniture & Electrical Store is appealing to local people to volunteer. The Store is in desperate need of Heart Heroes to come forward and spare any hours they can each week. Volunteering with the BHF for just half a day could fund one of our scientists to carry out their life-saving research for an hour. The BHF currently funds 500 post-doctoral scientists who work in research team’s right across the UK on projects which help us better understand how to diagnose, prevent, treat and cure heart disease. Giving your time doesn’t just benefit the Stafford BHF Furniture & Electrical store either; it can also be great for your CV and help in the hunt for a new job. The Store gives volunteers the opportunity to learn new skills, gain full training and also have a guaranteed interview for any paid

position that becomes available within the Store. The BHF has volunteers from a range of ages and backgrounds and it is a great way make friends and become part of a team. BHF Retail has also launched a partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award scheme making them an Approved Activity Provider. This means that young people can now use their time volunteering in our high street shops to work towards their Bronze, Silver or Gold DofE award. The DofE Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of activities for young people. Taking on the DofE Award gives young people the opportunity to experience new activities and develop existing skills. Chris Spencer, Area Manager said: “Volunteers are absolutely essential to the success of the charity, and play a vital part in fighting coronary heart disease, the UK’s single biggest killer. We appreciate every minute people can spare and to show how grateful we are, we also hope to give something back.

“Our volunteers can not only use and develop the skills they already have, but can also keep their foot on the career ladder, work towards qualifications and gain some excellent experience”. Stafford BHF Furniture & Electrical Store offers a wide variety of roles: from warehouse and administration to sales and customer service, dealing with window dressing and arranging house collections and electrical function testers. If you can’t volunteer but would like to help fight heart disease we are always looking for donations. Your unwanted items help fill our shelves and shop floors and raise money to help us fund the research that leads to breakthroughs. We operate a free collection service which can be booked on 0800 915 1111 or for larger furniture and electrical items, visit bhf.org.uk/collection

Share your volunteer stories with the BHF on our Facebook page or on Twitter using #BHFvolunteer. To find your nearest BHF Shop or Furniture and Electrical Store call free on 0800 915 1111 and for more information on volunteering opportunities visit bhf.org.uk/volunteer. 24

’ ‘The Day of Apollyon Roger Butters was born in Stafford in 1940, and has lived there all his life. He was educated at the local King Edward VI School, then a grammar school, apart from a brief spell at Denstone College, from which he ran away (twice). Following his father into the legal profession, he qualified as as a solicitor in 1962, and practised in Stafford for several years before retiring to give more time to writing and other interests. In the 1970s, in what were then happier days for the club, he was a director of Stafford Rangers FC, and at various times he has also tried his hand at aviation, owning race-horses, and Shotokan karate. His interests at present include chess, the local theatre, gardening, and trying to improve his shaky grasp of French and German. One thing he has never tried is marriage. He has had various books published over the years, including a recent series of modern detective novels set locally, and with Borough historian Nick Thomas he is co-author of a lengthy history of Stafford, soon to be published. Of The Day of Apollyon he says: ‘For many years I’ve become increasingly pessimistic about the future of this country, and for that matter the world. I first had the idea for a doom-and-gloom novel over thirty years ago, planning the first draft in 1980 on holiday in the Isle of Jura, where (unknown to me at the time) Orwell had written 1984. The problems facing this country then were of course very different, so I’ve had to update the book constantly, and from time to time it’s had half a dozen different titles, but at last it’s ready to see the light of day.’ Plot outline: England, 2032. For the second time in twenty years the govern-ment have acquired the Olympic Games for Britain, and hope to use them to divert attention from the host of problems facing this country. Social mobility has virtually ceased: the rich keep getting richer, and the poor poorer. There is injustice in the courts, a corrupt and useless police force, the health service and education are the worst in Europe, and the latest financial and economic crisis is looming. In Ulster the Troubles have reared their head again, while in Britain the government and police exaggerate the Islamist terrorist threat, and insist on pointless security measures to satisfy the public that something is being done. On the other hand multiculturalism has been imposed ruthlessly, and de-Anglicization of this country is almost complete. Most new laws are determined by the EU and the European Court of Human Rights, while foreign policy consists largely of toadying to the United States. Political Correctness means that freedom of speech has to all intents and purposes ceased to exist. Another huge problem is a worldwide outbreak of a new and virulent strain of syphilis. 26

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE/JULY 2014

Against this background of imminent social collapse a group of army officers plan a coup. For the most part they are simple men with a naïve belief in God, King and Country, who hanker after return to a largely imaginary golden age of the mid-twentieth century. One of them however is a psychopathic serial killer. The central character, and the only one not seriously flawed, is Richard Tyrrell, a disillusioned former SAS officer who now runs a wildlife sanctuary in the Midlands. His hero, with whom he constantly compares himself unfavourably, is Marcus Aurelius. Lonely, introverted and atheistic, albeit with a rigid moral code, Tyrrell has a ruthless streak which manifests itself in times of crisis. Invited to join the conspirators, he is faced with an invidious choice: to betray them to the authorities, to stand aside and do nothing, or to assist in their aims. Betrayal is out of the question, and doing nothing he regards as dodging the column. Reluctantly therefore he joins them, albeit with deep reservations both about the ethics of what they are doing, and their chances of success. In the event Tyrrell’s misgivings prove justified, as the bungled coup attempt heralds the Nightmare Scenario: the Day of Apollyon. Just 18 years to go. It could still happen ...

The Swan, Stafford

The Swan Stafford is situated in the heart of Stafford town centre. This 18th Century, former coaching inn offers 31 en-suite bedrooms, award winning restaurant, bar and a coffee shop.

The Swan has recently completed a major refurbishment of the ground floor and all facilities opened for full use again on Friday 28th March. After hearing about the recent make over at The Swan I thought it would be the perfect time to book a table at the brasserie and sample the new surroundings and of course the delicious new menu. My partner and I were rather excited to be going back to The Swan and

arriving early we parked on the car park at the rear of the hotel which is free of charge to residents and diners. As we had a few minutes to spare we put it to good use and looked around at the changes that have taken place. We entered through the rear doors and immediately liked what we saw. Soft lighting, wooden floors and a contemporary feel, yet still keeping traditional features greeted us. As we walked in to the brasserie the first thing that caught our eye was the swan themed lighting. We both commented on how tastefully the transformation of The Swan has been done. We were shown to our table by Aiona who was very helpful and attentive, and remembered us from our previous visit which we thought was a nice touch. The brasserie was already bustling with other diners, not to mention the calm and relaxed atmosphere. We were given the menu and wine list and Aiona also informed us that it was “steak night which we were also given a menu for.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE/JULY 2014

After ordering a bottle of Pinot Grigio, San Antonio – Italy 2013 (£16.50) to share we began to look through the beautiful dishes that were on offer to us. We both stated that we were so glad that we only had a light lunch as we were definitely having three courses this evening! For starters I chose the warm goats cheese served with red onion and chive croquette potatoes, baby beets, wild garlic leaf and rocket (£5.50) and my partner having the baked portobello mushroom served with spinach and Wrekin blue cheese rarebit, garlic parsley panko crumb, brown sauce, russet apple and watercress salad (£5.95).

For our main course I decided on the duck breast served with pak choi, sesame fried noodles and oriental sauce (£14.50) and my partner opting for the 8oz sirloin steak served with mushrooms, tomato, beer battered onion rings and hand cut chips (£19.95). Our starters arrived and looked and tasted delicious! Shortly after, our mains were presented to us and judging by the smiles on our faces we couldn’t wait to begin. My duck and my partner’s steak were cooked beautifully and both dishes had so much texture and flavour, you could tell by our empty plates that we thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was now time to look through the dessert menu but we just couldn’t make our minds up until we came to the sharing dessert board (£13.95) which we both said was a fantastic idea as it gave us a chance to try a little bit of everything. Our dessert arrived on a slate which included pecan pie, chocolate brownie cheesecake, meringue and raspberry roulade, crème brulee and chocolate and honeycomb torte. We both agreed that this was one of the best desserts that we had tried, absolutely delicious! Once again we had a brilliant evening dining at The Swan and we will both be returning very soon!

ke Bus a M o T t e S st o o B g in Fund n Easier e v E rd o ff ta S In l e v Tra

Bus users in Stafford can look forward to easier bus travel in the town thanks to additional funding secured by Staffordshire County Council. The Council’s Inspiring New Travel Options team have received an additional £85,000 from the Governments’ Local Sustainable Transport Fund. The extra money will support the extension of ‘real time passenger information’ (RTPI) for all bus services serving the town centre, giving passengers predicted arrival times for their next bus. Electronic display screens have already been fitted to over 20 bus stops around Stafford, giving people scheduled arrival times for their bus journeys, and in partnership with local bus companies, the next stage of the project in the summer, will see the introduction of RTPI. 38

The initiative is being rolled out by Staffordshire County Council and is part of the £4m Inspiring New Travel Options (INTO) project to get more people using greener travel in the town. Cllr Mark Winnington, Cabinet Member for Economy and Infrastructure with Staffordshire County Council said: “We are delighted with the additional funding which means that even more bus users in the town will benefit from this latest technology.

Staffordshire is one of nine local authorities who have been awarded a share of the additional £2m funding from the Department for Transport. Transport Minister Baroness Kramer said: “These successful schemes have changed how people travel, with communities now making healthier and greener choices. Dozens of great projects have been delivered already under this fund and I’m glad we’ve been able to support more.”

“Knowing exactly what time the next bus will arrive will allow people to plan their journey much better, with passengers being able to get the real time information at the bus stop or on their smart phone.

21-year-old George Grundy, from Tittensor is one bus user looking forward to real time information. George said: “I use the bus to commute to and from work every weekday and I am definitely looking forward to real time information.

“This is an exciting project for us and a real bonus for the thousands of bus passengers that use Stafford’s buses every week. The more reliable and attractive we can make public transport, the more likely we are to get people to use it and that’s what our INTO project is all about.”

“I already use the new electronic screens which make me feel more confident and assured about when my service will arrive or when to expect it. I can also check times on my smart phone which is also very handy.”

Following on from the success of Parkinson’s UK’s annual campaign which took place in April – an event which is dedicated to improving the public’s knowledge and understanding of the disease, Stafford-based Radfield Home Care is reminding individuals to be mindful of the condition all year-round.

Dr Hannah MacKechnie of Radfield Home Care explained: “Although there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s, those living with the condition usually have a normal or near normal life expectancy, and despite it being a progressive condition, the symptoms can be controlled. It’s worth bearing in mind not everyone with Parkinson’s has the same symptoms, and they don’t appear in a particular order, progress at the same speed, or in the same way.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition, which impairs actions such as talking, walking, and writing, and is understood to effect around 127,000 people across the UK. ronation

xcessive P E t: is tr ia d o P e h T sk A Why do my feet flatten when I stand up? One of the most common causes of foot and leg discomfort is a condition known as excessive/over pronation. Normal pronation, or “rolling inward” of the foot is necessary as the foot adapts to the ground. With excessive pronation/over pronation, the arch flattens or collapses and soft tissues stretch. This causes the joint surfaces to function at unnatural angles to each other. When this happens, joints that should be stable now become very loose and flexible which can cause pain and even long term arthritis. This scenario occurs frequently since we now walk on flat hard surfaces every day. At first, excessive pronation may cause fatigue. As the problem gets worse, strain on the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the foot and lower leg can cause permanent problems and deformities. The appearance of excessive pronation can be seen when standing, your heels lean inward and one or both knee caps turn inward. This is known as mal-

alignment of the skeleton. You will also abnormally wear out the soles and heels of your shoes very quickly.

Symptoms of Excessive Pronation Symptoms can come about in many different ways. The associated conditions depend on the individual lifestyle of each patient. Here is a list of some of the conditions associated with Excessive Pronation (rolling in of the foot too much): • Hallux Abducto Valgus (Bunions) • Hallus Limitus/Rigidus (stiff big toe) • Arch Pain • Heel Pain (Plantar Faciitis) • Metatarsalgia (ball of the foot pain) • Ankle sprains • Shin Splints • Achilles Tendonitis • Osteochondrosis • Knee Pain • Corns & Calluses • Flat Feet (Pes Planus) • Hammer Toes • Lower back pain

Treatment Overpronation occurs due to biomechanical dysfunction (walking abnormally). This can be controlled via insoles/ orthotics which adjust your foot posture accordingly. See a Chiropodist/Podiatrist for an assessment if you are concerned. They can provide specialised insoles/ orthotics for your associated condition and is usually combined with some stretch exercises or manipulative therapy.

Soroptimist Lynne Tuckley designed and made the framed embroidery to celebrate the 60th anniversary year of the club in Cannock. It has the new Soroptimist emblem, launched just over two years ago. President Janis and club members were delighted with it and will have it on display at their meetings during the year. 10 years ago Lynne and another club member, June Ward, embroidered a cloth to celebrate the club’s 50th year – that has on it the names of all members at the time.

In her opening words to the club President Janis outlined her hopes and ideas for the year. She and a small team have arranged some exciting and fun events for members and friends throughout the year. Her focus for awareness and fund raising will be on women victims of domestic violence, in particular the club will be supporting Staffordshire Women’s Aid and Pathway.

The excitement of the gift and the 60th year was tinged with sadness when members heard that their friend June Ward, a member of SI Cannock & District for 37 years, had died following a fairly long illness. June had been a well loved member of the club, always there to help with anything and a particularly caring person. She 46

s at Kate te u in m 0 9 r fo ss li b Pure l – By Sharon Caldwel re a c in k S ry a e McG Having booked a luxury facial rejuvenation massage with Kate McGeary Skincare, which sounded like 90 minutes of pure bliss. Upon entering the purpose built therapy room in Wimblebury I was taken aback to how calm and peaceful the room was. Kate made me feel very relaxed and comfortable on the heated bed, and after a long stressful day this was just what I needed! Kate talked me through the facials and they are all based on Facial Rejuvenation Massage, otherwise known as the ‘natural facelift’. Facial Rejuvenation is a gentle, non-invasive facial massage technique. It works mainly by freeing up the constrictions within the facial muscles and connective tissue that can be caused by the day to day stresses and strains that we all experience. Kate uses the award-winning Neal’s Yard Remedies skincare range in her facials. The products use beautiful natural ingredients such as rosehip oil, jojoba and the essential oil frankincense, all proven to help promote healthy skin and delay the signs of ageing. The products are organic and are 100% free of parabens and synthetic chemicals. Kate started my facial and within minutes my stressful day was in the back of mind, after about 10 minutes I was fully relaxed and was drifting away and soon asleep!

Once Kate had completed my facial she left me to get ready at my own pace, which was great as I was so relaxed I needed a few minutes to fully function. My skin felt so bouncy and looked glowing. Kate had prepared an aftercare pack which had lots of samples which I will definitely be testing. I really enjoyed my facial, and I would recommend to anyone who wants a luxury facial in calm, comfortable surroundings to pay Kate a visit.

UltraSlim Clinics UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ Cryolipolysis is the newest body contouring procedure to be offered by UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton to assist clients in achieving a slimmer physique and a smaller waistline. The clinic has seen bookings increase double fold since recent media reviews from celebrities such as Luisa Zissman, Kristina Rihanoff and Casey Bathcelor who admit to having had the new Fat Freezing treatment with amazing results. The Non-Invasive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ procedure eliminates fat without surgery in areas around the hips, thighs, arms, and love handles by freezing stubborn fat cells that live beneath the dermal layer of the skin. Developed in 2005 and backed by strong clinical research and trials, LipoFreeze (Fat Freezing) is based on Cryolipolysis - the use of precisely controlled cooling to remove fat. It is an FDA-approved non-invasive body contouring procedure available to patients with no scarring, no pain and no downtime. It provides permanent results and promises a reduction of the treated area by up to 40% in a single session. A patient will be able to see changes in about three weeks’ time, but dramatic improvement can be appreciated after two to three months. Hanna McCormac at UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton encourages her clients to maintain a healthy lifestyle for optimum results. Hanna says, “I often tell my clients I can remove ‘love handles’, but it’s entirely up to you to maintain this through diet and lifestyle. I find the majority of my clients follow the good aftercare advice given as the results achieved often provide clients with the motivation needed to change their lifestyle in order to maintain these.” With their exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device, UltraSlim 48

Clinics now provide the same quality treatments as London’s Harley Street Clinics only at a fraction of the cost. Hanna explains how. “Our exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device uses 4 hand pieces, unlike most other clinics including the top clinics in London which only use 1 hand piece, therefore we are able to treat larger or 4 different areas simultaneously which means you receive more value for money in addition to reducing the need to return for more treatments. It’s because of this technology and capability that we can offer the most cost effective Cryolipolysis treatments in the Midlands. In addition, our clients can also benefit from having our UltraSlim Lipo™ Cavitation & Radio Frequency treatments at the very same time, which provides instant results to target other areas of unwanted excess fat.” Aside from Fat Freezing Treatments, the clinic in Berry Street, Wolverhampton also offers other anti-aging solutions through their wide range of non-invasive and skin care services including Ultrasound Cavitation and Radio Frequency (RF) treatments to target excess fat, cellulite, Stretch Marks and Tighten Loose Skin on body or face. The

demand for these types of treatments have soared in recent years because you don’t have the risks associated with traditional tummy tucks or facelifts as there is no surgery, no needles, no pain and no downtime. Proud to Boast! The Cottage Surgery is proud to announce that they have created a special partnership with one of the UK’s true ’cutting edge providers’ of Injectable Medical Aesthetic Treatments. Surgeon Ash Labib is the UK Ambassador for Allergan, the originator and exclusive supplier of the genuine ‘Botox’ product. Used for medical treatments such as Hyperhidrosis, (excessive sweating), Migraine control, and the reduction of spasms in children Botox is now widely known as a way to reduce the signs of ageing. It is Ash Labib’s day job as the E.N.T. Surgeon at two of the Midlands premier NHS Hospitals, Russell’s Hall and New Cross, that inspired him to develop the use of Dermal Fillers, (another essential tool in the battle against the signs of ageing), for a very different treatment. Along with a very select few, Ash has developed the use of Dermal Fillers to provide Rhinoplasty (Nose jobs to you and me) and nasal Reconstruction. This pioneering new treatment can amazingly be completed in your Lunch Hour! Ash Labib does of course, utilise dermal fillers in the more traditional sense, i.e. filling those lines that occur through the natural ageing process or, to reduce scars left by acne, accidents or childhood diseases such as Chicken Pox. It is experience gained as a surgeon in the E.N.T. field that has lead him

to develop nasal reconstruction without the need of a scalpel. Many people are unhappy with their nose shape, either being ‘born with it’ or, because of an accident, or illness. In any event, how we look, can have an effect on how others perceive us. The usual remedy was to ‘go under the knife’ and undertake invasive surgery. Not only does this traditional surgical intervention require the essential use of a general anaesthetic with the usual risks this entails, but also several weeks away from work or from social commitment’s. It also results in very obvious and substantial bruising with the possibility of scarring, temporary or otherwise, post treatment aftercare, and sometimes the need for additional corrective surgery. All invasive surgery carries with it the risk of infection as we all now know with the rise of super bugs such as Clostridium Difficile, (known as C-Diff in the press/media) however good the surgical resources are. Ash’s skills in utilising dermal fillers in place of the scalpel usually remove ALL of the above downsides. Very often Ash can provide the desired aesthetic results in under half an hour, & virtually always within the time we take for our lunch break. Genuinely, a good percentage of his patient’s leave his treatment room and go straight back to work. Some patients choose to use Ash’s filler based expertise to avoid the above issues. Other patients choose Ash because they feel embarrassed by their desire

Before and after pictures of one of Ash's patients - without the use of a scalpel!

to remodel this important facial feature, and know the associated bruising will be evidence of surgery, to friends, family and work colleagues, and even strangers in the street. Because there are very rarely any tell tail signs and no need to take time away from work, some patients really value this ultimately discreet way of achieving their goal. The Cottage Surgery offers Ash’s services because they are aware that his skills in the use of both wrinkle relaxing injections and Dermal Fillers are second to none in the UK. Ash’s skill was initially brought to the attention of the Surgery through his international training and teaching business, where he is able to spread the word on his development of filler based Rhinoplasty. The surgery is confident that you can benefit from his 21 years of E.N.T. experience, years of Medical Aesthetic injectable treatment development, and innate understanding of his patients requirements. Amazingly, like all their other treatments, the Surgery offers free in depth consultations and have agreed for a limited time, that Ash’s Consultations will also be free! To book a free confidential and no obligation Consultation with Ash Labib, call us on 01384 940498 or visit our website www.cottage-surgery.co.uk

“Ash, I came to see you after I had Rhinoplasty 10 years ago, abroad. I was very unhappy with the results. But when you performed the nonsurgical Rhinoplasty on my nose, it was an amazing result which has changed my nose on the outside to my desired shape, and gave me all the confidence and reassurance from the inside as well! I thank you so much for the revolutionary treatment.” Chris

or The Summer? F in k S ss le w la F l fu ti Want Beau Look no further than Heaven organic skincare. Heaven products contain only the finest ingredients, which are also free from parabens, mineral oils and have not been animal tested. Although this may seem unimportant, ingredients in skincare products are absorbed into the body. Cheaper brands which are non-organic may contain harmful chemicals, additives and pesticides. There has been evidence produced to suggest a link between parabens and cancer. Heaven products and treatments are now available in some of the finest Spas around the world and have a large celebrity following including: Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kylie Minogue, Dannii Minogue, Emilia Fox, Michelle Pfeiffer, Katie Price, Victoria Beckham, Josephine Markham, Melinda Messenger and Paul Sculfor, to name a few. The signature facial from the Heaven repertoire is the Bee Sting Facial. This facial has been responsible for the amazing transformation of the Duchess of Cornwall. After years of neglecting her skincare, there was much work to do. She is now a firm fan of Heaven’s products and specifically the Bee Sting Facial treatment, so much so, that she recommended the Bee Venom products to Kate Middleton prior to her wedding. Our clients are always amazed by the Bee Sting Facial. It is so much more than a facial, providing many benefits to the recipient including:

Relaxation The Bee Sting Facial takes relaxation to another level. A combination of exotic aromas, deep massage techniques, heated massage couch and candle lit room ensure our clients leave feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Relief of Muscle Tension Muscle tension is relieved from the face, scalp, upper arms, shoulders, upper back, neck and feet using various massage techniques and carefully blended organic oils.

Lymphatic Drainage The facial massage ensures that excess fluid and toxins are drained to the lymph nodes. An added benefit is that sinus congestion can be alleviated.

Skin Tightening The deep massage techniques promotes skin tightening and reduction of lines and wrinkles due to the increase in circulation and lifting effect of the massage action.

Natural Botox The bee venom ingredient acts as natural botox and promotes production of collagen and elastin within the skin. This gives a more youthful look to the skin as it becomes firmer and lines and wrinkles are smoothed.

Glowing, Younger Looking Skin Oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin are increased through the stimulation of massage. Old dead skin is removed via a mild fruit glycolic exfoliant to reveal living, healthy skin. Although the Bee Sting Facial is primarily an anti-ageing facial, the products are effective for a number of conditions including, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, blackheads and acne. Facials are repeated once a month and aftercare products are recommended to maintain results. We also offer prescriptive Heaven facials for clients with specific skin complaints and mini facials for those with a busy calendar. Our facials can cater for all skins types, ages and genders. 52

h Castle Visit Tamrtwvaonrt der Does By Robe

Tamworth Castle promises a great day out for the family. With over 900 years of history, the Norman motte and bailey castle offers an informative and exciting visitor experience and somehow manages to retain an atmosphere from the very distant Medieval past.

56

A castle was first constructed on this site in Saxon times, in the year 913, on the orders of Ethelfleda, the Mercian queen. Strategically perched atop a hill, overlooking the Lady Bridge and the confluence of the River Anker and the River Tame, the castle acted as both a fortress to defend against the Vikings and a residence for the Mercian kings. Today there is little remaining of this original castle, as it was essentially knocked down, rebuilt and enlarged by the Normans very soon after their invasion of 1066. Considered one of the best-preserved motte and bailey castles in England, the exact construction of the greater part of today’s Tamworth Castle is believed to date back to 1070 and was finished some time in the 12th century. Its motte is the second largest in Britain after that of Windsor Castle. Following the death of Robert Despenser, steward to William the Conquerer, castle ownership fell into the hands of the Marmion family of Normandy, who were in possession of it for

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE/JULY 2014

six generations up to 1294. When in 1215 the 4th Robert Marmion of Tamworth Castle, who was the equivalent to the Chief Justice of the time, deserted King John and threw his support behind the French king, John had Robert’s lands confiscated and his son imprisoned and he ordered the demolition of Tamworth Castle. The castle was only partially demolished before Robert’s sons were able to regain their father’s lands following his death one year later. As the last of the Marmion’s died without leaving an heir in 1294, Tamworth Castle passed into the hands of the Freville family from Cambridgeshire, who held the castle until 1423. While the castle still today presents a mostly Norman identity, the perfectly intact ancient labyrinthine walkways, rooms, halls and chambers also bear the mark of more recent influences from the Tudors, Jacobeans and Victorians. After a centuries-long period of residence by the Ferrers family, it was the Townshend family who made the

last significant improvements to the castle in 1781. The castle was loaned out to tenants, including Robert Peel and Thomas Cooke during the nineteenth century and on the death of the latter in 1891, the Marquess Townshend put the property up for sale by auction and it was purchased by the Tamworth Corporation. Today, Tamworth Castle is one of Staffordshire’s top tourist attractions. Visitors can discover the essence of Medieval life by taking a tour through the Great Hall, watching re-enactments of history and displays put on by the castle staff and chatting with the Lady of the house, the footman, cooks, maids, and butlers. Children can have fun dressing up in clothing from throughout the ages and putting themselves in the Tudor and Stuart stocks and chambers. Outside, in the landscaped gardens alongside the river is a children’s play area and the view from the top of the castle is memorable. Tamworth Castle is found in the middle of Tamworth town centre,

10 minutes’ walk from the railway station. It is generally open from April to September between Tuesday and Sunday from 11.30am to 4.45pm. Between October and March it

opens on Saturdays and Sundays between 11.30am and 3.45pm. A word of warning: accessing the castle involves climbing a lot of steps!

t ADAM’S a Stylish Sor

The Vauxhall ADAM is the perfect example of the new breed of “stylish, sought-after and sexy” small cars that are flooding the market, says the Daily Record.

The mid-range Glam model, with a 1.4-litre engine, “felt smooth and sprightly”, also delivering “impressive economy”.

It looks a little like a cross between the Fiat 500 and an Audi A1, but has enough of an individual edge to help set it apart. Its funky looks combine with practicality and it’s a small car that manages to feel big on the inside.

The Record concludes: “It ticks a lot of boxes, measures up well for space and practicality and offers almost endless opportunities for customisation”. (Link: Daily Record, March 14).

The interior combines the contemporary and quirky, and a feel for quality throughout demonstrates that this is a car with aspirations towards the premium end of the market. Inside offers a bevy of customisation options, including four fascia colours, 15 seat trims, several roof linings and 18 fascia panels, the latter of which can be changed “the way people change the covers for their phones”. Engine options are all small and petrol only, there’s a 1.2-litre unit and two versions of a 1.4-litre. All are capable enough as city car runabouts and power options are 69, 86 or 99bhp. 60

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE/JULY 2014

The ADAM drives and handles nicely, with that typical small car fleet – enhanced by the fact its wheels are pushed as far out to each corner as it’s possible to go.

However, oddly, I’m not today. For on this particular journey, despite having as my carriage a vehicle so utterly incongruous and superficially at least - unfeasibly inappropriate for such a driving environment, I have metamorphosed into being more chilled-out and relaxed than the bastard progeny of The Dude from The Big Lebowski and the Dalai Lama: I wave through nuns waiting to pull out of side-turnings; allow buses to rejoin traffic; wait and flash my lights to oncoming motorists whenever there’s a shortage of space; toot my horn approvingly at passing cyclists; hum along happily to even the most facile idiocy on

Radio 1 and find myself smiling a lot more of the time. No, not like the slack-jawed gawker staring back at me from the rear of the bus, but because today I am Cliff Richard: the Christian motorist. And I can only credit this sudden conversion from the dark side to the fact that today I am driving the new Subaru Forester XT; the SUV which is commonly known to defy the trend for 4x4s to be just city-dwelling poser-mobiles; thought to be a short-on-style utilitarian off-road workhorse and moreover, usually a diesel. But this one isn’t. This new Forester is not what you think it is. It’s better. And it makes you feel good. I chuckle to myself, as I genuflect at the sight of the Forester’s formidable side-profile and funky, monster alloy wheels reflected back from the glass-fronted shop fronts, while driving at a rate of speed more typical of the biggest poseur rapper while ‘cruisin’ in da hood’ on MTV. The Forester is now a handsome machine - especially in white. And although I may now be prone to pose at a snail’s pace, this is by no means a slow car: 0-62 mph in 7.5 seconds; a mighty 240 bhp from the 2 litre petrol engine.

Powerful is available at all times courtesy of 258 lb ft of torque and a hefty turbo, always being delivered seamlessly through the CVT automatic transmission; every gear up-change is particularly smooth on a light throttle and - more crucially - every down-shift, just the same. But if you are in a hurry, this Forester will keep pace with most things on the road; if things get twisty, it handles with considerable composure considering its bulk and it’ll do it all without emptying both its fuel tank and your wallet too quickly, returning as it does 33.2 mpg on the combined cycle. So the big-selling Forester is as at home in the urban jungle as any Evoque and, since its release last year it’s been picking up offroad plaudits left and right from the specialist motoring press, so its evidently still pretty nifty off-road too. Just beware of those alloys. Inside the story remains the same: a considerable improvement over the out-going model. Plastics are softer-to-touch yet still feel robust; the dashboard configuration is immediately intelligible and, in this spec at least, it’s packed with electronic goodies like rain-sensing wipers, heated seats, rear-parking cameras and hill-start technology. Today’s cars are as intelligent as KITT from Knight Rider used to be and the Subaru is no different and it only costs just over £30,000. But it’s not all just futuristic kit and attention-grabbing aesthetics, all of the sensible and practical elements remain too: there’s a five-year, 100,000 warranty, All-Wheel Drive Technology, high-scoring safety marks from NCAP and a renowned reputation for reliability and durability. The Forester is now a beautiful bridge between style and off-road guile: the Everyman’s car which is every bit the car for every occasion.
