our GP? y h it w t n e tm in o p p a Struggling to get an
When you are busy trying to juggle home, work and family, it is important to be able to access a doctor and other medical services rapidly and at a time convenient to you. The Private GP Service at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital offers a convenient service that enables you and your family to receive the help and advice you need at a time to suit you. The service is run by local GP’s Dr Chris Hadley and Dr Manjit Kainth who have many years of experience between them. The doctors are experienced in all aspects of medicine and have a variety of special interests to cater for most medical needs. A speedy service with minimal waiting times One of the advantages of being based within the hospital is that we can usually arrange for investigations such as blood tests, x-rays and scans to be done at the time of consultation or the following day. We can also refer to any one of the wide range of specialists that consult at the hospital if needed. Private GP Services We offer a full range of direct access GP services similar to those available at your local NHS surgery, but with the flexibility to fit around your schedule. No registration with an NHS GP is needed. One of the most important things the GP service can offer you is the GP’s
time. The GP is happy to give you time to discuss your requirements. Our services include: • Diagnostic Imaging (including ultrasound, mammograms, CT and MRI scanning) • Electrocardiograms • Physiotherapy • Pathology on site • Pharmacy on site • HGV Medicals/Taxi Medicals • Blood Tests • ECG’s • Prescriptions • Referral to consultant specialists Costs A 30 minute consultation with one of our GP’s cost £95, with additional fees if tests/treatments are required. You will be made aware of any additional costs before any tests/treatments are undertaken. Some insurance policies may cover consultation fees and investigations (if you have medical health insurance please check with your insurer first). Any medicines required will be prescribed on a private prescription redeemable at any pharmacy. You will pay the cost of the drug plus a small dispensing fee. It is our policy to write to your NHS GP (assuming you have one) after each consultation to ensure your continuity of care. However, if you would prefer that we did not, your wishes will be respected.

Success at Chase Gra It is stating the obvious but our primary role as a school is to educate children. There is no doubt that we are very good at this and our success over a number of years is testament to that. Taking the average over the last five years our percentage of five A*-C grades (including English and Maths) at GCSE is over 93%. At A level our students regularly perform better than most of the other schools in the county. Yet there is more to education than just exam results. We start with the very youngest at three years old and we watch them grow and develop into young adults. We watch as their faces change and their limbs grow. They mature and blossom into the lovely young people that we know extremely well. We teach an academic curriculum here but we focus on teaching it slowly and carefully. Our very youngest learn much through play. As they learn to read and write we do not to rush on to the next topic just because the curriculum says that we must. Instead we make sure that the children understand and we do not move on to something else more difficult before they are ready. To us it is obvious that rushing at new ideas is foolhardy. The danger is that the child gives up trying if they have no secure
08
understanding of the basics. So if a child does not yet know their 5 times tables it is pointless to move on to the more complex 7 times table or begin long multiplication. If they cannot read level 12 of the reading scheme fluently then we read more widely at that level until they can, rather than introducing new and more complex vocabulary. As the children join our senior school the education begins to focus more precisely on those measurable targets of GCSEs and A levels. We have a programme of early GCSEs which begins in year 8 for some and in year 9 for all. We build their confidence with success which in turn comes from determination. Most of our children pass their GCSE Maths in year 8 but all pass in year 9 before proceeding to year 10. The idea is that they pass the foundation paper and then build on that success. It is that same idea again of getting
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
the basics right before moving on to do more complex work. Our students thrive and do well. They are not all natural geniuses but they are all individuals who want to do the best that they can. It is our children who are our best adverts. On Open days we allow our children to take our visitors around the school and they talk freely. They may not always wax lyrical about us as a school, indeed they will tell it as it is, warts and all. (Of course every school has warts!) However, the parents never fail to be impressed by the confidence with which the children carry out their ambassadorial role, even the quiet and shy ones who have been coerced by friends and parents into offering their services. If you can make it to an open day do come along.
Our next Open Day is Saturday 4 October, 11am to 3pm.

Lighter evenings at The Lighting Warehouse Lighter evenings are here at last. This is the time of year when our gardens become an extension of our homes. Lazy evenings spent relaxing with family and friends at a BBQ perhaps. To create the perfect setting visit Paul at The Lighting Warehouse for advice on lighting for your decking or discrete lighting to highlight an ornamental feature or pond. How about a more functional lamppost for the drive way or indeed an outside lamp or a security light by the door or gateway? When the evening turns chilly, you can retreat
into the conservatory. The Lighting Warehouse has a large range of lamp bases and shades or decorative up lighters ideal for lighting up your conservatory. To add to your comfort why not install a fan to cool you down when the temperature rises. On the other hand if you prefer to make the most of the longer lighter evenings by decorating, call in at the Lighting Warehouse for some illuminating ideas. Remember, to ensure you achieve the effect you desire the home consultation is available all year round.

r Consumers fo ce vi d A ty fe a S ey n Chim from the hearth and mantelpiece, and perhaps you could clear the grate of any fuel, ash or rubbish etc before the sweep arrives.
UK fire statistics show that each year on average over 30 thousands houses have chimney fires. This will be largely due to not getting the chimney swept often enough or burning fuel that is inappropriate for the appliance and causing tar to build up in the chimney. Most insurance companies will no longer pay out for claims made due to chimney fires unless the chimney has been swept by a professional chimney sweep and a valid certificate of sweeping issued that is recognised by insurance companies. If the fire brigade is called out to a chimney fire and it is proven that the chimney has not been properly maintained, then the local council can bill you for the call out, which can be expensive! Chimney fires can not only destroy homes but also endanger the occupiers of the dwelling. Slow-burning chimney fires don’t get enough air or have enough fuel to be as dramatic or visible as their more spectacular cousins. The temperatures they reach are very high and can cause damage to the chimney structure
and nearby combustible parts of the house. Use only recommended fuels for your appliance and flue type (if you are unsure check your manufactures instructions, ask your stove supplier, or a NACS Chimney Sweep). Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gases. Regular sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Chimney Sweeping will also help to increase the efficiency of appliances. The frequency of Chimney Sweeping will depend on a number of factors which include the type of fuel used, appliance, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, and the type of chimney you have. Your local NACS Chimney Sweep will be able to advise on the sweeping frequency during the appointment The sweeping frequencies below are for guidance purposes only: • Smokeless Fuel: At least once a year • Wood: Quarterly when in use • Bituminous Coal: Quarterly when in use • Oil: Once per year • Gas: Once per year NACS Chimney Sweeps are very mindful and conscious of making as little mess as possible, and are in fact trained in the prevention of dust escaping during sweeping. Normally Chimney Sweeps will need a clear passage to the chimney and adequate space to work in. They may suggest you clear any ornaments
12
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
Gas and oil flues will also need to be swept. It is essential that all flues are kept clean and clear of debris and vermin nests. It will also help with the prevention of chimney fires and even carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have just moved house, then it is important you have your chimney swept as soon as possible as you may not necessarily know when it was last cleaned properly by a professional Chimney Sweep. Always ensure you receive a NACS Certificate of Chimney Sweeping. Your Chimney Sweep will also provide advice on your Chimney, heating appliances, what fuels to use, and the best practice for fuel storage. Chimney Sweeps that are Members of the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) undertake an extensive training program and have to successfully complete a full assessment prior to becoming and trading as a NACS Member. All NACS Members must hold valid insurance for Chimney Sweeping, of which they provide a copy of to the Association on an annual basis. They must also have the correct equipment to be able to undertake the job which is checked at the time of their assessment. You can search for a NACS Chimney Sweep in your area by visiting the NACS website www.nacs.org.uk. NACS Chimney Sweeps are: • All trained and qualified • Fully insured • Issue an Industry Standard Certificate of Chimney Sweeping for every Chimney cleaned • Follow the Industry Standard Code of Practice • Able to inspect and survey Chimneys using CCTV equipment
NACS Members are dedicated to Protecting the Consumer For more consumer information and guidance on Chimneys and Stoves, please visit www.nacs.org.uk where you can also download a free Heat Your Home Safely Guide.

at War marches re G h it w ry a n te n ce r a First World W The Leader of Cannock Chase Council has thanked people in the District who came together to mark the centenary of the First World War at special Great War marches and services in Cannock, Hednesford and Rugeley on Saturday 2nd August. Local cadets, ex-servicemen and other groups marched through the three town centres, led by members of the Staffordshire Regimental Association, on Saturday. A memorial service took place in each town centre to remember our fallen heroes and commemorate the centenary of the start of the Great War. Music was provided by Rugeley Power Station Brass Band and Lichfield 1206 (Mercian) Air Training Corps of Drums. The day ended with a special Centenary Concert at the Prince 14
of Wales Centre in Church Street, Cannock, with music from the Band of the West Midlands Fire Service. Cllr George Adamson, Leader of Cannock Chase Council, said: “A huge sacrifice was made by men from Cannock Chase and their families here at home. The marches and memorial services are the first element of our commemoration plans for the next few years, so I urge local people to come together and support them.” Cannock Chase Council is working with leisure and culture partner WLCT on a programme of events and commemorations that will stretch right through to 2018. As part of this, local people across the District have been sharing their stories about the Great War. Local people are urged to get touch with any stories, memories or memorabilia. Call Kate McBey on 07971 667218 or Lisa Shepherd on 07812 332964.

organise media campaigns and respond to local media requests, and to with other volunteers to ensure that information and multimedia promoted is positive, accurate and consistent with the aims of the charity. • A Website Editor to liaise with other volunteers working across rehoming and welfare, fundraising, recruitment and publicity to source news, information and multimedia to make regular posts on the group’s website. • Trap, Neuter and Return volunteers to help ensure that the feral cat population is controlled via humane trapping, transporting to a local vet for neutering and then returning the cat. Louise Hobbs, Volunteer Branch Coordinator said: “The branch, which restarted at the start of this year, already does a lot work to help local cats but we really need these key people to help us raise much needed funds, to help us to home more cats, to assist our work with feral cats, and to help to promote the work of the local branch.” “The charity can provide training, assistance and support materials, but we do need people who care about cats and have bags of enthusiasm!”
Cats Protection’s Cannock Area branch needs to recruit a number of key volunteers to enable the charity to help even more cats. The branch, which is run entirely by volunteers, needs people who can spare a few hours a month for the following roles: • A Volunteer Homing Team Leader to help place unwanted and abandoned cats with loving new owners. This vital role provides the first port of call for people wishing to adopt a cat, arranging home visits and ensuring the right cat goes to the right home. • Home Visitors to visit potential adopters in their home, providing 24
them with helpful information on basic cat care and the type of cats that would be suitable for their needs and environment; and to identify suitable matches based on the information obtained from visits and the nature of cats in care. • A Fundraising Events Organiser to arrange a variety of fundraising events and activities, and to coordinate volunteers in raising much needed funds for cats in the area. • Fundraising Event Volunteers to be part of a team of friendly, enthusiastic volunteers, who will play a key part in raising money and awareness through attending local fundraising events and activities. • A Publicity Team Leader to work with the branch committee to

“The roles are voluntary and by sparing a few of hours a week it can make a huge difference to needy cats. We are sure whoever takes on the roles will find them incredibly rewarding. It’s also a great way to make new friends – both human and feline!” Cats Protection is the UK’s leading cat charity and the Cannock Area Branch is part of a nationwide network of 257 volunteer-run branches and 30 adoption centres that together help over 218,000 cats each year. As well as finding new homes for unwanted and abandoned cats, the charity also offers cat care advice to the public and can help towards the cost of neutering. Superior Veterinary C Hawkes Green Veterinary Centre was founded with the idea of being slightly unconventional, offering superior veterinary care to the local community at gold standard and low prices. With nominal overheads we were able to offer this service on a more permanent basis rather than on an introductory offer. Due to Hawkes Green Veterinary Centres success over the last 12 months and the strong relationship between us and Hawkes Green Pet Supplies, we are now in the process of building a fully equipped surgical suite on site. This will mean that all operations, x-rays and lab analysis can be done on site. This offering to the local community will bridge a gap in the veterinary market to rival it’s more traditionally expensive competition.
In terms of client care and service, there is no compromise and every client and their beloved furry companion will continue to receive our 5 star treatment at competitive prices. The ethos of the Lockwood group is to continue to offer world class service and value for money. This ethos runs very deep throughout the group and through all members of the team. The Lockwood group has, and is able to expand rapidly by having two directors of opposite fields and knowledge. Graham Parlane is the company owner and is a very well respected Orthopaedic surgeon, and Director James O’Gorman is a successful strategical management professional whom has committed his career to developing business across many sectors. This combination works in perfect harmony and they are in the process of increasing their management team to ensure that their high standard of care and service at reasonable prices is maintained. The Lockwood Group has recently expanded its surgeries into the Shropshire area. St Georges Veterinary Surgery based in St Georges in Telford also offers professional Grooming services, which is a new service for the group. This additional venture has become such a successful combination that plans are already underway to offer this service throughout other surgeries across the estate.

atre 1894-2014 e h T d n ra G n to p m a Wolverh Years of Theatre Celebrating 120
Wolverhampton Grand Theatre will be celebrating 120 years of Theatre this December; we caught up with Chief Executive Peter Cutchie who gave us a brief history of the theatre. Following on from a long tradition of theatres in Wolverhampton stretching back to 1750; in December 1894 the Grand Theatre opened on Lichfield Street to popular acclaim. Before the doors even opened a contemporary reporter noted that ‘for those of us who have watched the red brick shell rapidly overhaul and outgrow the surrounding scaffolding, this is truly a grand theatre.’ Replacing the Theatre Royal – the site of which became the Central Library - it was built to complement 28
the newly opened Victoria Hotel (the Britannia) next door. What made the Grand all the more remarkable was the speed with which it was built. From the laying of the foundation stone by Mrs C. T. Mander, Mayoress of Wolverhampton on June 28 1894 barely six months elapsed before a 2,151 capacity audience was seated in the auditorium to enjoy the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company perform Gilbert & Sullivan’s, Utopia Limited. The Grand Theatre is one of eminent Victorian theatre architect, C J Phipp’s, most enduring, intimate and beautiful creations. Constructed by Wolverhampton builders, Henry Gough for £10,000 the Grand has been a Wolverhampton icon for 120 years. The theatre is and has been fondly regarded by many generations of Wulfrunians and today still attracts almost three hundred thousand visitors annually through its doors.
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
Barbara Windsor has performed many times at The Grand Theatre and has lots of fond memories
In this 120th year it is only right to celebrate the ongoing success of the Grand and acknowledge the debt owed to its staff, past and present, for their hard work and loyalty to the theatre. It is also important to acknowledge the commitment, especially in terms of voluntary effort or financial support of its Board of Trustees, the Friends of the Grand, our Sponsors, Business Club members, stakeholders especially Wolverhampton City Council and last but most importantly YOU the patron.
Backstage Crew in 1955 for Annie Get Your Gun
Nest season kicks off with the smash hit show Dirty Dancing, the stage version of the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers classic musical film, Top Hat, a number of major dramas including two visits from the National Theatre, some exciting one night variety shows, performances from our local operatic societies and dance showcases from a range of very talented local children. Of course it would not be a complete season without the highlight for many, of any Grand Theatre year, our annual pantomime Cinderella starring Julian Clary.

The existence of the Grand Theatre is strongly supported by all those who recognise the value a vibrant theatre brings not only to the cultural life of Wolverhampton citizens but also the very important contribution it makes to the economic well being of the City. Celebrate this 120th Anniversary Season with us, enjoy the variety of shows on offer and please start telling everyone you know loudly and clearly that MY THEATRE MATTERS!

Recipe Of The Month Courgette And Poppyseed Cake EQUIPMENT • 2 x 8” anodised removable bottom cake tins • 2 x lining kits for 8” tins or grease with butter and line withparchment paper. (both tins and lining kits available from www.takefood.co.uk) • Cake stand and dome or plate and slice • Food mixer with beater attachment • Spatula • Scales • Zester / fine grater • Large grater • Pestle and Mortar • Palette knife for spreading INGREDIENTS • 300g of courgette, washed and coarsely grated • 4 eggs • 225g soft butter • 225g caster sugar • 225g self raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • Zest and juice of 1 lime. • 1 jar of lemon curd or email mike@takefood.co.uk for my recipe • 1 tsp of poppy seeds • A handful of pistachio nuts crushed in a pestle a mortar • A pinch of salt • 150g Cream cheese • 300g Icing sugar METHOD Pre-heat your oven to 180˚C It’s courgette season so I’m making a Courgette, lime and Poppyseed cake with cream cheese frosting, crushed pistachio and lemon curd filling. Cream together the softened butter and caster sugar until pale, light and fluffy. Then whisk the 4 eggs with a pinch of salt and weigh your flour.Gradually add a little of the 30

whisked eggs and then a little flour alternatively until all combined and the batter is smooth. Adding too much egg at once can split your batter and that’s not good. Now fold your courgette, poppy seeds, zest and lime juice into the batter with a metal spoon. Wooden spoons can tend to knock air out of your mix. Equally distribute the batter between the 2 tins and bake for about 35 minutes or until springy and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Now in a bowl or food processor, add the cream cheese and icing sugar together and beat until quite stiff and smooth. Remember you don’t want it sliding down the side of your cake. When the sponges are out of the oven allow them to cool in the tins for 15 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack. Once completely cool start to build your cake on the plate putting a little lemon curd on the plate to stop the sponge from moving around. Now spread the first sponge with lemon curd, not too much, sprinkle with a little of the pistachios and place the second sponge on top. Glaze the sides of the 2 sponges with lemon curd and top with the cream cheese frosting and sprinkle the rest of the crushed pistachio on top. SERVING SUGGESTION Get your friends round and make a large pot of strong tea. www.instagram.com/mikewhitehurst_takefood www.takefood.co.uk mike@takefood.co.uk www.facebook.com/takefood! www.twitter.com/takefood

on their travels! go t in m er pp Pe d an ok Staffordshire Outlo was too much trouble for her. We could not have been happier with the friendly professional and personal service given by Kirsty and the extras that were granted at no extra cost were great including a huge picnic hamper full with cutlery (everything you needed and more), a bench and table to seat 4 and 2 deck chairs. We were now ready for our adventure!
We couldn’t have picked such a beautiful weekend, the sun was shining and Peppermint was off on her travels with the Staffordshire Outlook director Sharon, sister Michelle and niece Jaida.
34
Peppermint is a Type 2 VW Campervan, and was born in May of 2011 - So she is just a baby in the current Volkswagen world! Having never drove a campervan, we need not have worried, Peppermint was so smooth to drive and the power steering was a great bonus! We were soon feeling free on the road and having lots of attention from other drivers, Peppermint is definitely a head turner!
Picking Peppermint up from her base in Huntington Cannock, we could not wait to hit the road!
Driving through the countryside to our location at Bwlchgwyn Farm between Fairbourne and Arthog, we were all enjoying the drive and with the CD stereo complete with an iPod/mp3 player socket playing our favourite songs, which is another bonus of Peppermint we could of drove for hours! With my niece Jaida in the back who is usually a nightmare whilst travelling but she was really enjoying this journey!
You can with a campervan owner Kirstie Helley-Archer gave us a great induction to Peppermint and every question that we asked was promptly answered, nothing
Arriving at our site, we parked Peppermint up were taken aback from the fabulous views that greeted us. We set up peppermint up which was so simple, we popped up the

roof and Jaida could not wait to go to bed (which is something we never hear!). Peppermint sleeps up to four (plus several more with an additional VW camper awning/ tent!), with a double rock and roll bed big enough for two adults, and a pop top bunk with a weight limit of 16 stone (typically one adult or two children). A modern, complete and fully equipped kitchen, with fridge/freezer, two ring LPG hob, grill, and sink with water supply. Seating and dining area, complete with driver’s swivel chair! As the weather was so great we all sat outside Peppermint, playing lots of games and watching the sun set. As the night drew in, a very excited Jaida went to bed and loved sleeping on the pop up bunk and was soon flat out from all the
excitement. The double rock and roll bed was a great size and looked so inviting after a long fun day. The next morning we all commented on how comfortable and spacious the beds were. The sun was shining again so we were all looking forward to a day at Fairbourne Beach. Having found a great parking space opposite the beach, Peppermint was a great changing room to get into our beachwear.
Having spent hours on the beach we returned to Peppermint for a spot of lunch and a well-deserved cup of tea. We then headed back to the site for another great night! The following day when we were packing up for our trip home, we all wished we had Peppermint for the week so we could of toured around Wales some more, especially with the weather being so great! The fuel consumption of Peppermint was very cost effective as she has a
1.4 engine, so we were pleasantly surprised when we filled her up once we had got back to base. We are definitely going to book another weekend away in Peppermint, and if you and your family and friends are looking for ideas for a family holiday, Proms, Weddings, or days out then contact Kirsty on 07969 806669 or log onto www. youcanwithacampervan.com

odiatrist:oma/Syndrome? Ask The P s - Morton’s Neur
sser toe Ball Joint Pain in the Le Nerves that transmit messages to the brain from the toes pass between the metatarsal bones (long ones behind the toes). Excessive pronation (rolling in of the foot) or if the arch in your foot is weak, will cause the metatarsal bones to move closer together, and to pinch the nerve causing it to become inflamed. This is most likely to happen between the 3rd and 4th bones causing a pain or numb sensation on the inside of the two toes that the nerve comes from. Often a shooting sharp pain can also be experienced. Sometimes it is caused by a neuroma or benign tumour on the plantar digital nerves (situated in the web between the toes). It may develop due to ill fitting shoes which press against the nerve. The condition is made worse by athletes who spin on the ball of their foot such as golfers and tennis players. The pinched nerve causes pain or numbness on the sides of the toes nearest to the nerve. 38
What are the symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma? • Pain on one side of a toe and the adjacent side of the next toe. • Pain when you squeeze the foot. • Pain if you press between the bones. A Mulder’s click may be heard/felt. • Corns & Calluses
• Fit orthotics as mentioned above • Tape the foot to relieve pain and pressure on the nerve • Prescribe anti-inflammatory edication (such as ibuprofen)
What can a person do to prevent/ treat a Morton’s Neuroma?
• Give exercises to strengthen the arch of the foot
Rest. Wear a metatarsal raise or dome which will raise and spread the bones of the forefoot taking the pressure off the nerve. See a chiropodist/podiatrist or sports injury professional who can form a diagnosis and provide treatment and rehabilitation. Wear appropriate shoes with wide deep toeboxes.

ry Risk! ju In r u o Y e c u d e R … rs Runne Running is one of the most accessible forms of fitness training to ensure you attain an adequate amount of exercise each week. In fact if you run regularly then your relative risk of death can decrease by up to 63%. Exercise is medicine! However there is also a risk of injury from running and each year between 30-80% of runners suffer injury from running (Van Gent et al 2007). This statistic hasn’t significantly reduced in over 30 years! The biggest risk factor for recurrent injury is previous injury (Saragiotto et al 2014). The 5 most frequently reported injuries in runners are Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (aka shin splints), Achilles & Patella Tendonopathy, Plantar Heel Pain (aka Plantar Faciitis), Ankle Sprain and ITB Syndrome (Lopes et al 2012). Most of these issues are cumulative onset
injuries caused by training errors and can be avoided with the correct advice. If we progressively adapt our tissues to the loads encountered when running then we get stronger and faster rather than becoming injured. It’s a question of balancing appropriate training load with adequate recovery! We can optimise this response to training through being aware of some important information
4. Train often – Running 4-5 times per week for shorter distances achieves better adaptation especially for the beginner. Progress training volume by approximately 10% per week. 5. Recover - Sleep, Diet, Hydration are all important aspects of recovery which optimise adaptation to training.
1. Warm up – Progressively prepare your body for running with dynamic movement such as light jog, walking lunges, hopping, knee lifts
Consider following the basic advice outlined above and you will already be well on your way to better running with a reduced injury risk.
2 DON’T statically stretch before running– research suggests you will impair performance and increased your injury risk (Shrier et al 2004).
My next article will focus on SHOE SELECTION and will dispel some common misconceptions about selecting your shoes for running!
3. Take shorter, lighter, quicker steps – Most runners run with reduced cadence (typically around 160 foot strikes per minute). Try aiming for 3 foot strikes per second (Schubert et al 2014)

UltraSlim Clinics UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ Cryolipolysis is the newest body contouring procedure to be offered by UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton to assist clients in achieving a slimmer physique and a smaller waistline. The clinic has seen bookings increase double fold since recent media reviews from celebrities such as Luisa Zissman, Kristina Rihanoff and Casey Bathcelor who admit to having had the new Fat Freezing treatment with amazing results. The Non-Invasive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ procedure eliminates fat without surgery in areas around the hips, thighs, arms, and love handles by freezing stubborn fat cells that live beneath the dermal layer of the skin. Developed in 2005 and backed by strong clinical research and trials, LipoFreeze (Fat Freezing) is based on Cryolipolysis - the use of precisely controlled cooling to remove fat. It is an FDA-approved non-invasive body contouring procedure available to patients with no scarring, no pain and no downtime. It provides permanent results and promises a reduction of the treated area by up to 40% in a single session. A patient will be able to see changes in about three weeks’ time, but dramatic improvement can be appreciated after two to three months. Hanna McCormac at UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton encourages her clients to maintain a healthy lifestyle for optimum results. Hanna says, “I often tell my clients I can remove ‘love handles’, but it’s entirely up to you to maintain this through diet and lifestyle. I find the majority of my clients follow the good aftercare advice given as the results achieved often provide clients with the motivation needed to change their lifestyle in order to maintain these.” With their exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device, UltraSlim 42
Clinics now provide the same quality treatments as London’s Harley Street Clinics only at a fraction of the cost. Hanna explains how. “Our exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device uses 4 hand pieces, unlike most other clinics including the top clinics in London which only use 1 hand piece, therefore we are able to treat larger or 4 different areas simultaneously which means you receive more value for money in addition to reducing the need to return for more treatments. It’s because of this technology and capability that we can offer the most cost effective Cryolipolysis treatments in the Midlands. In addition, our clients can also benefit from having our UltraSlim Lipo™ Cavitation & Radio Frequency treatments at the very same time, which provides instant results to target other areas of unwanted excess fat.” Aside from Fat Freezing Treatments, the clinic in Berry Street, Wolverhampton also offers other anti-aging solutions through their wide range of non-invasive and skin care services including Ultrasound Cavitation and Radio Frequency (RF) treatments to target excess fat, cellulite, Stretch Marks and Tighten Loose Skin on body or face. The

demand for these types of treatments have soared in recent years because you don’t have the risks associated with traditional tummy tucks or facelifts as there is no surgery, no needles, no pain and no downtime. t SI Cannock & Distric 014 - 15 Year 2 Diamond Celebration Cannock Soroptimists are celebrating their Diamond Year - 60 years of working to improve the lives of women and girls locally, nationally and internationally. As the local club celebrates reaching this milestone, the Soroptimist International UK Federation is celebrating reaching its 80th year. The first Soroptimist Club was formed in USA in 1921, 3 years later the first UK club was formed in London and in 1934 clubs within the UK formed their own Federation within the International organisation - Soroptimist International United Kingdom and Ireland - SIGBI. SI is divided into four federations: SIGBI actually comprises 355 clubs in 29 countries, including many Commonwealth and former Commonwealth countries such as Barbados, India, Gambia, Zimbabwe, Jamaica, Nepal and Sri Lanka. This special occasion will be marked by tree planting at the Soroptimist plot at the National Memorial Arboretum on 28th September this year. When the Soroptimists first formed as a club for women it was a rather exclusive one; you had to be invited to join, its members were taken from only the most well-to-do in society and it had a strict ‘hats and gloves’ policy. Things have moved on somewhat! Gone are the hats and gloves, the formal invitations and the restrictions to only ‘professional’ women. But what remains is the continued passion that is at the heart of the Soroptimist movement to improve the lives of women and children around the world. Throughout the decades, members have been driven by the same goals: working to achieve equal rights through the education, empowerment and enabling of women. Since its birth in Oakland, California, in 1921, Soroptimism has spread to more than 100 countries with in excess of 3,000 local clubs. Its 80,000 worldwide members make Soroptimist International (SI) the biggest and most influential women’s 44

voluntary organisation in the world. It is the only female organisation that consults with the United Nations to ensure that women’s voices are included in international decision-making processes. The local club, SI Cannock & District, is a thriving club - three new members have already been inducted this year and others are attending meetings with a view to joining. The Club meets generally twice each month at the Barns, enjoying a meal and friendship whilst planning the Programme Action projects which are at the heart of Soroptimism. The work they do ranges from holding fund raising events in order to support local refuges for women victims of domestic violence as well as for international projects such as Birthing in The Gambia (the BIG project) and providing solar lanterns and cookers to women in developing countries, to collecting goods for Pathway, Women’s Aid and the local Food Bank. They are also very involved in lobbying and raising awareness of many issues affecting women: issues such as AIDS education, child sexual exploitation, and human trafficking.
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
Cannock Soroptimists are currently involved in preparing talks and leaflets to raise awareness amongst young women and teenage girls regarding the health issue Endometriosis, something which can be very debilitating. Another group within the Club is working with other Clubs in the Midland Chase Region to establish their continued role in fighting FGM [Female genital Mutilation]. In August, members will join Rotary International at Weston Park in the clean up following the annual V Festival when items of use to women needing the local refuges will be collected and donated to them. More information about Soroptimist International is available on the website www.sigbi.org and about the Cannock Club on www.sigbi. org/cannock-and-district. Pet Pics by Lyn Kelly As a child I always sketched, shopping trips with Mum would always result in new pencils, crayons and sketch pads. I desperately wanted to go to art school, however my father said it wasn’t a proper job, so I didn’t persue my dream. Many years later I decided to take up art again, I have now been painting for 14 years. Many people began commenting on how good my work was, and encouraging me to start selling my work. I have now taken a massive step of turning my hobby into my career, and finally living my
childhood dream with my business, Pet Pics by Lyn. I work in all kinds of medium but particularly pastels and acrylic. Pastels give a luminous and velvety feel to a painting, whereas acrylic can be vibrant and bold, but add texture.

gborough Visit Shuva n der Does By Robert
The Shugborough Estate, nestled amid acres upon acres of dense foliage on the fringes of Cannock Chase, is one of the jewels of Staffordshire. Located in Great Haywood, four miles from Stafford, it comprises the magnificent, world-famous three-storey mansion house and its surrounding eight acres of land, which includes a working model farm. The National Trust took ownership of the estate in 1960
46
following the death of Thomas Edward Anson, the fourth Earl of Lichfield, and, acting on his intentions, they opened the house and grounds to the public in 1966. Today Shugborough pulls in approximately a quarter of a million visitors per year, making it one of central England’s top tourist attractions. People continue to be captivated by the grandeur of the house, which includes both Georgian and

Neo-Classical elements, beautiful rococo plasterwork and a porcelain collection brought back from the voyages of Lord of the Admiralty, George Anson, in the 1740s.
Shugborough is also the UK’s only Complete Working Historic Estate. The sight of costumed guides working in the kitchens, dairy, brewhouse, water mill and farm - which includes rare farm animalshelps to preserve the tradition of the estate and brings an added appeal to visitors. The servants’ quarters house the Staffordshire County Museum, which contains England’s only log-fired brewery that still produces beer commercially. It has been a working exibit since 2007 through Titanic brewery. It was George’s grandfather, William, a local lawyer, who acquired the Shugborough Estate in 1624 for the sum of £1,000. In 1693 William’s grandson, also called William, demolished the manor house and built in its place the threestoried block which forms the centre of the house today. It became the complete Georgian mansion in 1748, after William had commissioned esteemed architect Thomas Wright to add the two-tier pavilions either side
of the house. It was George, who became Lord Anson in 1747, who funded the alterations. On one of his voyages George captured a Spanish treasure galleon worth around £400,000, one of the largest fortunes ever taken by an English captain at sea. The money was used to further develop Shugborough later on in the century and acquire more land. On George’s death his brother Thomas inherited the fortune and it was his taste for Greek classical art that led to a shift in Shugborough’s stylistic direction in the late 18th century. The change culminated in the addition of the eight huge ionic columns that form the distinctive grand portico at the entrance of the house. Thomas’s close friend James “Athenian” Stuart also created follies and monuments in
the grounds, including the Chinese Pagoda house, the Triumphal Arch, the Doric temple and, perhaps of most relevance today, the Shepherd’s Monument. A book published in 1982, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, drew attention to a mysterious inscription on the monument which is the subject of much conjecture. Its meaning has allegedly eluded the likes of Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens and has been linked to UFOs and even the whereabouts of the Holy Grail. A few generations down the line the Anson family were becoming viscounts and then lords of Lichfield. Up until his death in 2005, the fifth Earl of Lichfield, Patrick, commonly referred to as Lord Lichfield, had leased private apartments within the house from the county council. A keen photographer, the house showcases a large collection of his work. Patrick’s son Thomas is the current Earl of Lichfield but has not taken residence in the house since 2010. With the Anson family’s long association with Shugborough ending, the apartments became open to the public in 2011.

Two new television technologies are completely changing TV for the better – right now. As you’d probably expect Samsung are at the forefront of both with some amazing new products. The two technologies combine to give you a television range of outstanding beauty and quality Curved TV is now possible and its led to some gorgeous designs; these new Samsung curved LED televisions really do look as good switched off as they do with your favourite show on. But it’s far from being all about stunning good looks. There are performance advantages to the new curved screens. The first advantage is a vastly improved sense of depth and realism thanks to Samsungs Auto Depth Enhancer which makes you feel as if you’re actually there. It analyses different parts of the screen and applies contrast enhancements to each to provide a superior sense of depth. Secondly the curved screen naturally produces a wider field of view and more natural viewing angles. 48
These important benefits allow you to see clear detail even in the corners of the screen. No matter where you sit, you’ll enjoy the best possible viewing experience. The third benefit is improved contrast levels for a clearer picture. On a curved screen, unlike a flat one, light naturally travels towards the viewer, so no matter what angle you sit at to watch, you’ll see a crisp detailed picture. “At Webbs we have curved Samsung TV’s on show and we regularly demonstrate the benefits to our customers” say’s store manager Mark Tranter. “over 80% of these people are so impressed they go on to purchase. Of course we know are products inside and out and can show customers the differences and answer any questions they have”. “A great delivery and installation service is important too, we’ll even go out to our customers home to advise on the best screen size and where to site the new TV. We deliver promptly and install to a professional standard whether on the wall or on furniture. The second major leap in television technology is all about picture quality. It is of course 4K Ultra High Definition. With astonishingly high

detail levels the picture is so life like and realistic it’s amazing. Samsung UHD televisions deliver 3840x2160 pixel resolution levels. The picture shows up to four times the level of detail of even the best high definition sets currently available. Mark says “If you’re looking to replace your TV, you want something better than you’ve already got, or else why change? 4K UHD is much, much better and it means you can sit closer to a bigger screen without any problems. We’re seeing lots of customers trading up to Ultra High Definition, but also to bigger screen sizes. With ultra slim frameless designs people can get them in without dominating their living rooms and they’re delighted with the quality”. “We’ll even let them have 2 sets in their home to help choose which is the best. We’re really proud to offer such high levels of service and our customers love it”. So if you are in the market for a new TV you really should check out the all new Samsung curved Ultra High Definition range. All you need then is a top quality retailer – so visit Webbs.

From ISA to NISA Virtually all the headlines surrounding George Osborne’s recent Budget were about the changes to the pensions rules. Rightly described as the biggest changes to pensions legislation for a hundred years, they will have far-reaching implications for the financial planning of many. We will take a detailed look at these pension changes in a future article. With all the attention devoted to pensions, though, it was easy to overlook a radical overhaul of the rules governing Individual Savings Accounts – ISAs as they were formerly known and NISAs (New Individual Savings Accounts) as they’ll now be called. The changes came into effect on the 1st July. Here’s a concise summary of the new rules the Chancellor introduced: •
The current annual limit on ISAs was increased from £11,880 (the figure the Chancellor announced in his last Autumn Statement) to £15,000
•
If you already have invested £11,880 in an ISA for the 2014/2015 tax year you will be able to add an additional £3,120 from 1st July.
•
The division between stocks and shares ISAs and cash ISAs will disappear. Previously you could only hold 50% of the annual ISA allowance in cash: from 1st July all the £15,000 can be held as cash if you so choose
•
•
too little” and these changes are an attempt to address that. They’re also a way of rewarding those savers in cash ISAs who have put up with very low interest rates for some time now. So all in all, they’re far reaching changes and we very much welcome them.
•
But what are the practical implications for you?
Lord Lee, hailed as Britain’s first ISA millionaire, tells a compelling tale about how a sensible approach to investment, which includes the prevalent use of the tax free accounts, can pay huge dividends.
•
•
For the first time ever savers will be able to transfer previous years’ funds from stocks and shares ISAs into cash ISAs. This had previously not been allowed Limits on Junior ISAs and Child Trust Funds are also being increased and will rise to £4,000 from 1st July
George Osborne famously said that he wanted to deliver a Budget for “the makers, the do-ers and the savers” and he’s certainly delivered on the savings part of that statement. He was concerned that people in Britain “borrow too much and save
•
First of all you can now save almost three times the previous limit in a cash ISA – up from £5,940 to £15,000. For savers whose first concern is security, ISAs now present a very attractive option with a husband and wife being able to save £30,000 a year in a tax-free cash investment For us, flexibility is the key. ISAs will now play a much greater part in our clients’ financial planning, but it will be more important than ever to make sure that your ISAs are performing well – if you’re invested in a stocks and shares ISA – and that you’re always receiving a competitive rate of interest on savings held in a cash ISA. We would expect the increased demand for cash ISAs from July 1st to trigger a wave of competition from the product providers so we will hopefully see some attractive savings rates.
Similarly, there will be pressure on the investment companies to make sure they are producing good returns, given that investors can now move all their stocks and shares ISAs into cash holdings.
Both of those factors can only be good news for savers and investors.
Writing in The Telegraph, recently, Lord Lee describes how, after 16 years of investing a total of £126,000 into ISAs, his pot had grown to a hugely impressive £1 million. Of course, not everyone who invests in ISAs will reach the level of return achieved by Lord Lee, but his examples proves a potent reminder of just how valuable ISAs can be to your investment portfolio. We emphatically welcome the changes that the Chancellor has introduced. The limits have been increased, ISAs have been greatly simplified and they will undoubtedly play a greater role in savings, investments and overall financial planning from now on. If you have any questions on the proposed changes; if you would like to discuss the ISAs you currently hold – or how NISAs can play a part in your future financial planning – then don’t hesitate to contact us.

eturns: Self-Assessment Tax R o Avoid T s e k ta is M n o m m o C The As anyone who is self-employed or runs their own business will know, HMRC requires a full breakdown of expenses and taxes by the end of January. For many, this means hours talking to their accountant and searching for lost documents. If there are mistakes in a return, then the whole process can result in hours and – in the worst cases – money wasted needlessly. Here are the common errors people make when filing their self-assessment returns and how you can avoid them. The common typo The most common mistake made by small business owners or entrepreneurs is simple: not triple checking every last detail. There are plenty of mistakes that can creep into your form, so, while it may seem like an obvious piece of advice, force yourself to look over it again and again until you are absolutely certain that every piece of information is recorded in the right place. When you are satisfied that the form is correctly filled in, check it again. Not using an accountant If you are still unsure about even the slightest element of your return, then ask your accountant. Accountants are the experts: they have the specialist knowledge to help you through the self-assessment process, and ignoring them is not advisable. They may be a small, added expense, but when you consider that you incur an automatic fixed penalty of £100 if your return is late (not to mention the supplementary charges if you still don’t get your return in), it is clearly worth the outlay. Ignoring your business Accountants also have the added benefit of allowing you to focus on your business while they get on with all the paperwork! I would particularly recommend hiring an accountant to walk you through the forms if this is your first year of tax returns. Failing to understand the financial year It is also essential that you understand the financial year. The time you are recording is from 6thApril 2013 until 5th April 2014. The crucial thing to remember is not when you were paid, but when you sent out the invoice – that is the information HMRC is interested in. If you received your payment after the deadline, yet sent out the invoice within those dates, then make sure you include it on the return. 52
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
Not leaving time Even if you work with an accountant, you will most likely still have to dedicate some time to the form yourself. Small business owners I have spoken to in the past have tried to juggle their time between running their business and completing their tax return. I always advise them to put some dedicated time aside to concentrate on their return. If you are at home, squirrel yourself away; if you’re at work, lock the door to your office. It pays to avoid interruptions for a couple of hours to get it right first time. Rip off the plaster – it will be quick and painless, but don’t leave it until the last minute. Not discounting VAT VAT is an area that often trips up business owners who don’t use accounting software, but manually input their finances onto a spreadsheet. Those who have invested in accounting software will find that when they enter receipts, the programme will automatically make allowances for the VAT included in the expense and remove it. However, if you don’t use this kind of software, make sure you remember to discount the VAT – if you don’t, your form will be returned and you run the risk of missing the deadline. Not paying HMRC Finally, do not forget to actually pay your return! It is not uncommon for small business owners to send in their returns and think they are done, but you still have to pay HMRC once the form is dispatched. There are a variety of ways to pay, including by cash or debit card, but check on the HMRC website to be certain of how you are eligible to pay. Ultimately, this period need not be as stressful as is widely reported. Avoid the kind of pitfalls listed above, and if you are in any doubt about anything, enlist an accountant. The Stafford Castle Classic car show, in Staffordshire, has celebrated its 10 year at this years show. It has now become one of the major classic car shows in Staffordshire. The event is becoming more and more popular, with this year’s event we had almost 200 exhibitors displaying their cars at the show which was held on Sunday, 3rd August at Stafford
Castle. The exhibits ranged from the 1930’s to the present day. Thousands of visitors flocked to the show, especially with the good weather. There was also a military vehicle display and classic motorcycles section. There was a popular mini landrover ride for the little ones too, as well as free archery lessons, so this was proved to be a great day out for all the family! The show is organised by the Stafford Borough Council, and Mark Hartwell, the Heritage Sites Manager said: ” It was our biggest show so far and we
are very pleased with the support of the public. We are very pleased with the success and popularity of the event. It is an event for all the family.” Sherif Hegazy, one of the Judges on the day, said: “The diversity and quality of the exhibited motor vehicles was outstanding. It was very difficult to make a decision on the winners of the various categories.” The show was sponsored by RPH motors and AA Silencers from Stafford.

Ro Back From The Dead by
b Taylor
The new Peugeot 208 GTi shakes up the modern hot hatch malaise and stirs Rob Taylor’s soul. Peugeot 205 GTi: like James Bond, 007; you know the name, you know the number. Forgive the misty-eyed introduction; but it falls so easily to hand, such is the significance of the seminal 1980s hot hatch. Peugeot has struggled ever since to recapture the 205’s delicious je ne sais quoi, with every new attempt being met with a mixture of melancholy and dread. That is, of course, until now; until the arrival of the new 208 GTi. But let me first make something clear: this is not halfhearted lip service designed to appease devotees of past glories; no, this is a car in its own right, as it should be. Admittedly there’s the occasional, respectful nod to the past - the GTi badge on the C-pillar, for example - but this is obviously an entirely more grown-up car, aimed at an increasingly discerning and spoilt body of buyers. But that’s not to say the 208’s appearance is beige and boring and won’t tug at the heart-strings of the young - it will. There’s 17” alloys, LED daytime running-lights, chunky side sills, dual exhausts and a rear spoiler to capture their imagination and it is, to my eyes, a picture-perfect example of sporty styling with just the right amount of restraint. There’s similar refinement and maturity on the road too. The GTi is not shouty at start-up, nor is it particularly uncouth under acceleration, it is instead perfectly intouch with what is the telling dichotomy of hot hatches: driveability and usability. Cars of this ilk usually bring with them a ride akin to falling down stairs on a landslide of bricks; given the predilection for most manufacturers 56
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
to chase infinitesimal gains in handling and this spoils day-to-day life behind the wheel. Equally, incremental gains in performance sap fuel economy and can often leave “sporty” engines feeling gutless unless screaming at the rev-limiter and devoid of low-end torque. The Peugeot suffers from none of the above: its performance is torque-rich - 203 lb ft, in fact - thanks to a meaty band of turbo’d power from its 197 bhp 1.6 litre engine; it can get close to its official fuel economy number of 47.9 mpg (I averaged 43.3 mpg); and its suspension set-up is just-so, never damaging to spinal columns, yet composed enough to let the GTi dance its way through every corner you throw at it. And in a straight line it can out-drag almost all of its kith and kin: 0-62 mph is 6.8 seconds and top speed is 143 mph. But enough numbers, for now. This is a car that makes you feel the stirrings of your soul, not think your way through the driving experience with a calculator. In fact, there’s really only one number you need concern yourself with and that’s price: £18,895. Expensive for 1980s’ Man; real-value for Modern Man. The cabin is a thoroughly exciting and sensuous place to sit: the red-stitching on the seat and chrome on the gear-stick are obligatory, but the delightfully tactile qualities of the plastics and switchgear are a bonus - as is parking sensors, dual-zone airconditioning, automatic headlights and DAB radio. So then, it is to cliché that I turn to see off this sojourn with the 208 GTi: the little Peugeot is a car for today; a car unwilling to skulk in the shadow of former glory; a car which is sure to be a hot hatch standard-bearer for years to come.
r Alphabet Soup by Rob Taylo
Using more letters than a game of Scrabble, Rob Taylor addresses the new Seat Ibiza SC FR Edition. A ‘FR’ badge on the rear of any Seat stands for Formula Racing. A curious nomenclature understood only by elite motoring cognoscenti, being as it is as-yet not so hackneyed and everyday as ‘GTi’ or ‘RS’. Sounds promising though, doesn’t it? The car onto which the badge is affixed looks promising too - and not just from the rear. This new Seat Ibiza SC FR Edition’s front-end is in equal parts preening and purposeful, when accentuated by Emocion Red - maybe, in this case, ‘FR’ stands for Flaming Red as well, I wonder. But it’s not just easy on the eye; it’s brimming with Mensa-levels of intelligence and the kind of kit typically fitted to luxury lorries from Bentley et al. I am, of course, referring to a clever bit of technology known as ‘ACT’. Yep, it’s another acronym of sorts, but bear with me: it stands for Active Cylinder Technology, which does exactly what it says on the tin: ergo the engine has the facility to switch seamlessly between two and four cylinders in an effort to drive up fuel economy and drive down pollution. Of course, you may already have taken umbrage at use of the word ‘seamless’, but I can assure you it is, such is the speed of transition at work. The official combined fuel economy figure of 60.1mpg is credible too - even I managed to get into the low-fifties, with about as much thought to parsimony as a Parisian parsnip peddler. A singularly intelligent Stop/ Start system assists in this matter also; never cutting in too-soon, leaving you in a jam.
And out on the open road, with caution thrown to the wind, the little Seat is a revelation. It’s a thoroughly well-engineered car with a 138 bhp engine which revs with a delicious freedom and has all the requisite torque - 184 lb ft - from its turbo to make pottering about easy. It’s quick too: 0-62 mph is faster than a saddle-sore dispatch rider with a penchant for bad Indian food, at a mere 7.8 seconds and its top speed is 130 mph. Engine and road noise rarely figure inside a cabin which is marked out by copious amounts of toys, including Sat-Nav, air conditioning, DAB radio, cruise control and Bluetooth; not to mention sporting seats from Seat’s ‘ever-so-comfy’ range. You might even say, no-one makes seats quite like Seat. The ergonomics are spoton; the plastics and switchgear, tactile and well-made. And the Ibiza’s chiselled exterior lines fail to intrude too much into the cabin space and while room in the rear for adults is limited, you can spec a five-door variant. While nothing says sporty quite like red seatbelts - and the FR Edition has them - big 17” alloys can’t be far behind; so too red brake calipers and tinted back windows. And while such features may be too shouty for some people’s taste, they don’t make the ride unbearably hard or unpleasant; nor does the suspension set-up. All that’s left for me to do then is to finish with a forcefully fluent flourish: fast, frugal and fun, perhaps? No; that would be glib and betray just quite what a fine accomplishment this car is at just under £16,000. I’d prefer to steer well clear of any automotive alliteration and end as I started. Suffice it to say: ‘FR’ now also stands instead for Fantastically Rewarding. 01952 321334 | WWW.STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK.CO.UK

Million Times! A r ve O – ld ou M ks a re Vauxhall’s Adam B Using premium materials and design cues often found in the luxury sector, ADAM is a threedoor, four-seater. Designed by Brit, Mark Adams’ team in Europe, ADAM incorporates a ‘floating’ roof which is visually disconnected from the body, making the use of two-tone colour schemes more impactful than ever before. Classy, sophisticated and glamorous, ADAM retains design signatures from other Vauxhalls: the crisp line around the door handle (GTC), the wing-shaped chrome grille bar (new Astra) and the blade shape in the lower doors. It will also be the first car in its class to have the option of LED daytime running lights. But unlike other rivals in the segment, ADAM bucks the trend for retro-based design with a fresh and bold look that will appeal to open-minded individuals who want to defy convention with a car that’s distinctive and striking. And it’s those very customers that Vauxhall is targeting with ADAM’s high degree of personalisation options. Available in three trims from launch – JAM (fashionable/colourful), GLAM (elegant/sophisticated) and SLAM (racy/sporty) – ADAM customers can effectively ‘build’ their own car. There are almost unlimited visual combinations, with a wide variety of exterior colours – including two different roof colours - interior colours, equipment and materials. Customers can even choose their headlining, including an LED-lit starlight roof trim. Mark Adams, Vauxhall/Opel’s Vice President of Design, summed up what makes ADAM unique: “No other car in this segment can be individualised as much as ADAM because we are offering virtually unlimited exterior/ interior colour, fabric and kit combination choices. It’s very unlikely that you’ll find two identical ADAMs out there.” Powertrains Vauxhall’s ADAM will be offered with a choice of three efficient ecoFLEX four-cylinder petrol engines from launch: a 1.2-litre 70PS, plus two 1.4-litre engines with either 87PS or 100PS. All will be available with optional Start/Stop technology and will be mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
Later on, ADAM will be the first car in Vauxhall’s range to adopt the new-generation small petrol engine, featuring direct injection and forced induction, and an all-new six-speed gearbox. Upscale equipment & smartphone connectivity Unique in its class is ADAM’s new top-of-the-range infotainment system designed to support new media sources, including Bluetooth, as well as connectivity for smartphones with Android or Apple iOS software. This enables access to internet-based applications, including GPS navigation. The system uses a state-of-the-art seven-inch, full-colour touch screen display allowing quick access to a variety of on-board controls. Round, mechanical clock-style instruments with chrome bezels mark a departure from those seen in other Vauxhalls, while ADAM customers can also opt for a heated steering wheel – another first in the class. Advanced technology enhances safety and comfort ADAM will break new ground in the A-segment, by offering technology normally only found in higher-end cars. A prime example is the Advanced Park Assist II system, which will be an ADAM option never seen before in a Vauxhall production car. Drivers engage the system with a button on the dashboard and it tells them when they reach a parking space large enough to accommodate the car. The system then automatically steers them into the parking space, with the driver only needing to control the brake, clutch and gears. APA II uses ultrasonic sensors to work its magic, and always comes in combination with Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA). As with all Vauxhall’s, ADAM uses the very latest safety technology. High-strength steel is used to make an ultra-rigid passenger cell. This is complemented by front, side and head curtain airbags, as well as dual seat belt pre-tensioners for front occupants which offer additional knee and leg protection. Other safety features include two sets of ISOFIX points to easily and safely attach child seats on the 50:50 split foldable rear bench. Crisp ride and handling; ESP standard across range Despite its compact dimensions of nearly 3.7 metres in length and 1.72 metres in width, ADAM’s footprint is relatively broad, with front and rear tracks of 1485 and 1478mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2311mm. Front suspension is by MacPherson strut, with a compound crank system at the rear. Wheel sizes range from 16- to 18-inch, and cars that are specified with 17- or 18-inch rims come as standard with the lowered sports chassis. The latest generation ESP system is standard on all ADAMs, including a Hill Start Assist function.

san New Nissan Juke - Nis
Design Studio
Personalisation becomes an integral part of new Juke ownership with the Nissan Design Studio personalisation packs available on the Acenta Premium and Tekna grades. The customisation packages provide opportunity to add individual touches to the new model, with an array of colours and quirks to tailor the look of the interior and exterior. In standard form, the Juke interior theme is a sophisticated grey on Visia and Acenta, but Nissan designers have found ways to make the interior even more bold and dynamic on the higher grades. The all new Nissan Design Studio interior personalisation pack allows for brightly coloured inserts to be added, free of charge on Acenta Premium and Tekna. With a choice of black, red, white or even bright yellow - you can change the centre console, door finishers, air vent rings, and even the stitching of the gear knob, steering wheel, seats and meter hood lid leather cover. Depending on the model, there are two styles of fabric for the seat upholstery - Premium cloth on Acenta Premium and leather trim on Tekna. To keep the Juke as one of the most distinctively designed vehicles on the roads, the exterior pack also comes equipped with the choice of the four new colours (red, white, black and yellow) with customisation options available for the mirror cap covers, headlamp finishers right through to the front and rear bumper finishers. Finally, not only does the Nissan Design Studio offer record levels of
personalisation options for the interior and exterior of the new Juke but now, an array of styling options for the alloy wheels are also available. The new Juke’s latest colour palette of red, white, black and bright yellow can be customised onto the 18 inch alloy wheels to coordinate with the rest of the exciting new styling options. Changes have also been made to the shape of the trunk area in two-wheel drive models to boost luggage space by an impressive 40 per cent, taking the overall capacity to a class-leading 354 litres. Unlike rivals, Juke can carry a large and a medium suitcase at the same time, and is also deep and wide enough to carry a chassis-type pushchair. Versatility is further enhanced with flat folding rear seat, making it easier to load large objects, while the inclusion of a two-stage floor in the luggage area makes the space even more flexible. A further final option opens a whole new world to Acenta, Acenta Premium and Tekna owners - literally. A large open-air panoramic glass roof allows
not just daylight to flood into the cabin but also fresh air as required. When opened, the panel sits on top of the rear portion of the roof so as not to steal interior headroom. The glass panel measures 964mm wide by 837mm long and covers two thirds of the roof area. This is matched by an opening width of 693mm and an opening length of 301mm to add to the feeling of airiness in the cockpit. The Juke, as with the rest of the Nissan crossover family, comes with the latest generation of NissanConnect, which now offers smartphone connectivity with access to a variety of apps ranging from social media platforms to entertainment - including internet radio - through a large, 5.8in colour touch screen. The latest generation satellite navigation system integrates Google Online Search. This application offers the most up-to-date location based information: fuel stations hotels, restaurants, among many others. All these points of interest can be searched through Google’s handsfree voice command and categorized by distance and customer ratings. A send-to-car function also allows drivers to search for their destination at home and send instructions to NissanConnect system at the click of a button. The system includes Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone integration as well as Aux-in and USB slots. When not in infotainment mode, the screen doubles as a monitor for the newest version of Nissan’s pioneering Around View Monitor which gives a complete real-time 360 degree ‘helicopter’ view around the car to make manoeuvring as safe and easy as possible.

HEV Is Leading P er d n a tl u O i h is b su Mit Cannock In ip h rs le ea D r o F e rg The Cha THE Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV became the bestselling vehicle eligible for the Government’s Plug-In Car Grant in July, beating the Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). And the plug-in hybrid vehicle is proving a hit at Brindley Mitsubishi in Cannock, which has already sold more than 100 Outlander PHEVs since they went on sale in early June.
awareness, increasing sales of all models in our range. “The Outlander PHEV is the first SUV plug-in hybrid in the UK market that boasts 4WD capability with an EV range of 32.5 miles and emissions as low as 44g/km. The vehicle is extraordinary, it’s very different to other hybrids and our customers love it.” There’s more good news on the financial front too. With just 5 per cent benefit in kind (BIK) over 12 months, a company car driver getting behind the wheel of a PHEV enjoys a virtual pay rise of thousands of pounds per year.
The SMMT statistics show the highly anticipated Outlander PHEV took 43% of all the successful applications for the Government’s £5,000 grant in July. Prices for the Outlander PHEV range from £28,249 to £34,999 (post-grant). The Outlander PHEV has received huge levels of interest, driven by the vehicle’s outstanding fuel consumption of 148mpg and low emission credentials of 44g/km, meaning no Vehicle Excise Duty is payable. LATEST NEWS!! 2.0L DCi VANS M9R Engine Injector problems? Engine Issues? Recently we have invested a lot of money in tooling to remove seized or broken injectors in M9R engines fitted in Trafic, Vivaro & Primastar vans in order to save our customers expensive repair bills. The seizing of these injectors is due to water ingress from poor sealing of the scuttle panel from factory. This water sits on top of the rocker cover which houses the injectors and over time the water penetrates the wells where the injectors sit. Corrosions then occurs which in turn short circuits the injector(s) causing misfires and cutting out issues. The problematic injectors(s) become an issue to remove due to the amount of corrosion they have suffered. We have seen many garages and customers incurring costs of £1000’s due to snapped injectors which have resulted in damaged cylinder heads and even worse complete engine replacements. At present we have a 100% success rate. We will also seal the scuttle panel after the repair free of charge to prevent any further ingress of water. 66
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
We can also carry out any other repair work to these M9R engines such as timing chain replacements and engine re-builds. Don’t risk the chance of costly repairs such as a replacement cylinder head or engine by attempting removal without the correct tools or knowledge, call the experts.
