our GP? y h it w t n e tm in o p p a Struggling to get an

When you are busy trying to juggle home, work and family, it is important to be able to access a doctor and other medical services rapidly and at a time convenient to you. The Private GP Service at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital offers a convenient service that enables you and your family to receive the help and advice you need at a time to suit you. The service is run by local GP’s Dr Chris Hadley and Dr Manjit Kainth who have many years of experience between them. The doctors are experienced in all aspects of medicine and have a variety of special interests to cater for most medical needs. A speedy service with minimal waiting times One of the advantages of being based within the hospital is that we can usually arrange for investigations such as blood tests, x-rays and scans to be done at the time of consultation or the following day. We can also refer to any one of the wide range of specialists that consult at the hospital if needed. Private GP Services We offer a full range of direct access GP services similar to those available at your local NHS surgery, but with the flexibility to fit around your schedule. No registration with an NHS GP is needed. One of the most important things the GP service can offer you is the GP’s

time. The GP is happy to give you time to discuss your requirements. Our services include: • Diagnostic Imaging (including ultrasound, mammograms, CT and MRI scanning) • Electrocardiograms • Physiotherapy • Pathology on site • Pharmacy on site • HGV Medicals/Taxi Medicals • Blood Tests • ECG’s • Prescriptions • Referral to consultant specialists Costs A 30 minute consultation with one of our GP’s cost £95, with additional fees if tests/treatments are required. You will be made aware of any additional costs before any tests/treatments are undertaken. Some insurance policies may cover consultation fees and investigations (if you have medical health insurance please check with your insurer first). Any medicines required will be prescribed on a private prescription redeemable at any pharmacy. You will pay the cost of the drug plus a small dispensing fee. It is our policy to write to your NHS GP (assuming you have one) after each consultation to ensure your continuity of care. However, if you would prefer that we did not, your wishes will be respected.

Something For Everyone At Compton Hospice On October 25th 3-9pm The Cedars will open their doors once again for their annual family Scarefest event

Compton Hospice

Caring Together

Charity Reg No: 512387

The summer may be over but from Spooks to Santa, Compton Hospice has got a little something for everyone to make this winter seem a little more bearable. Bring your werecubs (under 10’s) to trick or treat in the safety of the Freaky Forest on the Cedars grounds between 3 and 6pm, then let them

turn their paws to some of the games and creepy crafts on offer. Our resident storyteller will be on hand with Tales from the Crypt and your little terrors can get up close and personal with some suitably scary critters in our mini petting zoo. Signal 107fm will be on hand with their spooky disco and there’s a fancy dress competition too, so be sure to dust off your fangs and clip on your capes! From 7pm the Freaky Forest undergoes a terrifying transformation for those feeling a little braver.

Nightmares become reality as shadows cross the moon and evil awakes. Take a walk with the Halloween Horrors if you dare! Garlands replace the ghouls on Sunday November 30th between 11am and 4pm when Compton Hospice brings Christmas to Wolverhampton with their annual festive market. Bring the kids down to meet Father Christmas and his elves in the magical grotto and shop a range of beautiful gift and craft stalls for presents to impress.

Senior Staffy Club Senior Staffy Club was set up in 2012, when our founder adopted a senior staffy who was overlooked by everyone, because of her breed and her age. This seemed so strange, as she was house-trained, knew commands and was a friendly girl, just looking for some love! Senior Staffy Club then began to grow, with more volunteers coming on board, and earlier this year, we became a registered charity. We now look after at least 10 seniors at any given time, whether in foster or our kennels. We rescue and re-home senior (7 years plus) Staffordshire Bull Terriers and staffy crosses. We take in these dogs directly from the pound, or from homes that can no longer care for them. We aim to help the seniors most in need, take them in to our kennels or foster care, and offer them back-up for the rest of their days, should they need it. We promote them, and find them new homes, which we stringently check ourselves, so they do not end up in the same situation. ALL our dogs are neutered / spayed before moving on from us, so that we can help to lessen the ongoing problem of over-breeding.

our kennels and foster homes; facilitating meetings between our dogs and potential adopters; maintaining a website and facebook presence to promote the dogs, and also advising members of the public on welfare and behaviour issues. We are always in need of more volunteers, funds, homes and foster homes, as the demand grows with every day. Do you think you could help? Then please get in touch via email – seniorstaffyclub@ hotmail.co.uk or by phone – 07817 559 886.

There are so many staffies in pounds and rescues, and the seniors are even more difficult to re-home. We re-home nationally, so we have a constant workload including: looking after the dogs in our care; undertaking any necessary vet treatment, neutering, vaccinations etc; full assessment of the temperament of our dogs in order to match them to the right home; organising a dog-walking rota for the kennel dogs; fundraising; attending shows to raise awareness and promote the dogs, as well as to raise funds; home-checking potential adopters and foster homes; transporting dogs from pounds to

marches r a W t a re G h it w ry a n te First World War cen The Leader of Cannock Chase Council has thanked people in the District who came together to mark the centenary of the First World War at special Great War marches and services in Cannock, Hednesford and Rugeley on Saturday 2nd August. Local cadets, ex-servicemen and other groups marched through the three town centres, led by members of the Staffordshire Regimental Association, on Saturday. A memorial service took place in each town centre to remember our fallen heroes and commemorate the centenary of the start of the Great War. Music was provided by Rugeley Power Station Brass Band and Lichfield 1206 (Mercian) Air Training Corps of Drums. The day ended with a special Centenary Concert at the Prince 08

of Wales Centre in Church Street, Cannock, with music from the Band of the West Midlands Fire Service. Cllr George Adamson, Leader of Cannock Chase Council, said: “A huge sacrifice was made by men from Cannock Chase and their families here at home. The marches and memorial services are the first element of our commemoration plans for the next few years, so I urge local people to come together and support them.” Cannock Chase Council is working with leisure and culture partner WLCT on a programme of events and commemorations that will stretch right through to 2018. As part of this, local people across the District have been sharing their stories about the Great War. Local people are urged to get touch with any stories, memories or memorabilia. Call Kate McBey on 07971 667218 or Lisa Shepherd on 07812 332964.

Two lucky winners can each win 2 tickets to see Regeneration on Tuesday 4th November at 7.30pm “I believe that this war, upon which I entered as a war of defence and liberation, has now become a war of aggression and conquest.” Siegfried Sassoon Marking the centenary of the First World War, this new dramatisation of Pat Barker’s unforgettable Booker-nominated novel is adapted by Olivier award-winning playwright Nicholas Wright (His Dark Materials, Vincent in Brixton).

Craiglockhart War Hospital, Scotland 1917. Poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon has been institutionalised in an attempt to undermine his public disapproval of the war. His Army Psychiatrist, Dr William Rivers, has been tasked with returning shell-shocked officers to the trenches, yet under Sassoon’s influence, has become tormented by the morality of what is being done in the name of medicine. Reminding us that some of the most touching of friendships are borne from the most brutal of conflicts, Regeneration is a compassionate look at war and its devastating effects: a powerful anthem for the youth of WW1. Regeneration at the Grand Theatre Wolverhampton from Tuesday 4th November to Saturday 8th November.

V Festival Clean-Up 2 For the last few years a collection of tents, chairs, beds, sleeping bags, unopened food etc has been organised by Rotary International at Weston Park in the two days following the V Festival. This year, as in previous years, Soroptimist International of Cannock & District was involved. Festival attendees leave so much behind which, if it can be collected, can be used by people at home and overseas. No matter how many volunteers go along they are never able to collect all of the items left behind. On Tuesday 19th August Soroptimists from SI Cannock & District were joined by local Councillor Hyra Sutton and parliamentary candidate Amanda Milling to help with the grand ‘clear-up’ at Weston Park following another very successful V Festival. Wearing wellies and other appropriate clothing members set to work dismantling and re-packing tents, rolling up air beds, collecting chairs, buckets, bowls, sleeping bags and unopened tinned food– and anything else left behind by the revelers which was in good condition and might be of use to others. The tents were all taken to the International Aid trucks; they will be used in disaster areas around the world. All other items this group collected will be used by Pathway,

L-R: Trish Mellor; June Bould, Hyra Sutton, Sue Cartlidge, Amanda Milling, Dawn Jacobs-Clutton collecting at Weston Park

the local refuge for women victims of domestic violence and by Staffordshire Women’s Aid – in fact, many of the items collected have already been put to good use by local women who are in need. The V Festival clear-up is a true example of voluntary organisations working together and giving service to help others. Everyone who went along thoroughly enjoyed the experience and they know that all of the goods will be put to excellent use by those who need them. More information about Soroptimist International is available on the website www.sigbi.org and about the Cannock Club on www.sigbi.org/cannock-and-district.

il Early C O y u B s k c a B r te is in M Heating oil users are being urged to save money by stocking up early before winter in a joint campaign backed by the Community Council of Staffordshire. The Buy Oil Early Campaign has been launched by ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England), Citizens Advice and the FPS (Federation of Petroleum Suppliers), with the support of Energy Minister Matt Hancock. The Community Council of Staffordshire, a member of the national ACRE Network of rural community councils, says stocking up early has a range of benefits. Chief Executive Chris Welch said: “Research shows 36pc of homes in rural areas are off the gas grid, so 14

many households rely on heating oil. In times of high demand, prices can increase rapidly, leaving the most vulnerable unable to afford to adequately heat their homes.” “We are urging households to buy their oil now so that they are prepared when the colder weather arrives and the time comes to switch on the heating.

disrupted and delivery times only increase as the weather gets worse. “If you haven’t thought about it, it’s worth looking at establishing or joining a community buying group which makes oil prices cheaper for individual households.”

Details on how to join our Staffordshire wide scheme can be found on the Community Council of Staffordshire website www.staffs. org.uk or ring 01785 242 525.”

“Please do also be sure to check that you are receiving all the help that you are entitled to with your local Citizens’ Advice Bureau.”

Energy Minister Matt Hancock said: “The nights are drawing in and winter is just around the corner so we are encouraging people to stock up on oil sooner not later.

Twenty-five members of the ACRE Network have set up oil-buying groups. Last year, they bought more than 13 million litres of oil between them, saving almost £650,000 on behalf of rural customers. For details of oil-buying groups and top ten tips for heating oil users, visit www.acre.org.uk

& Service e c n a n te in a M y rt e p AJG Pro rvices you can trust Property se

Are you looking at improving your home? AJG Property Maintenance and Servicing Ltd, provide an extensive range of property repair and maintenance services, including Household Improvements, Alterations & refurbishments, Kitchens and Bathrooms, Conservatories and Driveways. Our customers include private householders, commercial businesses and public sector organisations, like schools, GP clinics and leisure centres. We are proud that our impressive growth as a property maintenance company is almost solely due to positive word of mouth recommendation. But don’t just take our word for it, please see below a few testimonials from some of our clients: “Having contacted many other local property service companies, I could not believe the various quotes with many hidden costs, and how they did not listen to my plans. I called AJG Property Maintenance and Services and spoke with the owner Alex who came to my property and listened to me. I knew what plans and work I required, and Alex totally understood my plans and he took time to listen to my needs then gave me a honest, secure price, there was no hidden extras like other quotes I had received. Alex and the team at AJG are young and fresh and this reflects on the fantastic ideas that they had planned for my home. My home has been completely transformed by AJG and I cannot believe how smoothly the project has gone. I completely trust all of the staff at AJG and even gave Alex a key to my home whilst I have been away on holiday. They are so clean and tidy and even though this has been a long project as I have had my total house refurbished including a new conservatory, windows, kitchen, bathroom, shower 20

room, front door, driveway, lighting, flooring & fully decorated, it has been a stress-free enjoyable time. This is down to Alex and all the guys; I would definitely recommend AJG Property Services, to anybody who wants any work carried out on their home.” Liz Witwell, Penkridge “The people at AJG Property Maintenance and Services always do a very good job. We’ve been using them for four or five years now. We could be among their first customers and the fact that we still using them tells you how happy we are with their service. One of the first jobs they did for us on a regular basis was to cut our lawns. Then they re-pointed our roof and, after we had a break-in, they fitted a new side door with the latest security features which have given us real peace of mind. They are very reliable and we know they will do a very good job every time at a reasonable price. We even leave our keys with them if we need to go out. It’s so nice to be able to trust a company like AJG Property Maintenance and Services. The company’s staff are always polite and just get on with their work. They clean up after themselves and the only sign that they have been in the house is that the work is finished and the problem has been fixed. They are also very helpful. We bought a new petrol lawnmower and couldn’t get it to work. So we called Alex, the company owner for his advice, and he came right round and showed us how to get it started. He didn’t charge us for his time, he was happy to help. As pensioners, we need to be careful with our money and spend it wisely. AJG Property Maintenance and Services have reasonable rates which means we can get our repairs and improvements done. Also, they are very nice people so they are a pleasure to have around. We only have positive things to say about their service.” Eddie and Betty Sargeant

t SI Cannock & Distric 014 - 15 Year 2 Diamond Celebration Cannock Soroptimists are celebrating their Diamond Year - 60 years of working to improve the lives of women and girls locally, nationally and internationally. As the local club celebrates reaching this milestone, the Soroptimist International UK Federation is celebrating reaching its 80th year. The first Soroptimist Club was formed in USA in 1921, 3 years later the first UK club was formed in London and in 1934 clubs within the UK formed their own Federation within the International organisation - Soroptimist International United Kingdom and Ireland - SIGBI. SI is divided into four federations: SIGBI actually comprises 355 clubs in 29 countries, including many Commonwealth and former Commonwealth countries such as Barbados, India, Gambia, Zimbabwe, Jamaica, Nepal and Sri Lanka. This special occasion will be marked by tree planting at the Soroptimist plot at the National Memorial Arboretum on 28th September this year. When the Soroptimists first formed as a club for women it was a rather exclusive one; you had to be invited to join, its members were taken from only the most well-to-do in society and it had a strict ‘hats and gloves’ policy. Things have moved on somewhat! Gone are the hats and gloves, the formal invitations and the restrictions to only ‘professional’ women. But what remains is the continued passion that is at the heart of the Soroptimist movement to improve the lives of women and children around the world. Throughout the decades, members have been driven by the same goals: working to achieve equal rights through the education, empowerment and enabling of women. Since its birth in Oakland, California, in 1921, Soroptimism has spread to more than 100 countries with in excess of 3,000 local clubs. Its 80,000 worldwide members make Soroptimist International (SI) the biggest and most influential women’s 22

voluntary organisation in the world. It is the only female organisation that consults with the United Nations to ensure that women’s voices are included in international decision-making processes.

The work they do ranges from holding fund raising events in order to support local refuges for women victims of domestic violence as well as for international projects such as Birthing in The Gambia (the BIG project) and providing solar lanterns and

Cannock Soroptimists are currently involved in preparing talks and leaflets to raise awareness amongst young women and teenage girls regarding the health issue Endometriosis, something which can be very debilitating. Another group within the Club is working with other Clubs in the Midland Chase Region to establish their continued role in fighting FGM [Female genital Mutilation]. In August, members will join Rotary International at Weston Park in the clean up following the annual V Festival when items of use to women needing the local refuges will be collected and donated to them.

cookers to women in developing countries, to collecting goods for Pathway, Women’s Aid and the local Food Bank. They are also very involved in lobbying and raising awareness of many issues affecting women: issues such as AIDS education, child sexual exploitation, and human trafficking.

More information about Soroptimist International is available on the website www. sigbi.org and about the Cannock Club on www.sigbi.org/cannockand-district. Their email address is si.cannock@outlook.com and their phone number 07971 494510

The local club, SI Cannock & District, is a thriving club - three new members have already been inducted this year and others are attending meetings with a view to joining. The Club meets generally twice each month at the Barns, enjoying a meal and friendship whilst planning the Programme Action projects which are at the heart of Soroptimism.

Donations g in k ee S y tl en rg U re Stafford BHF Sto Stafford British Heart Foundation (BHF) Furniture & Electrical store is urgently appealing to local residents to have a clear out and donate any unwanted household goods such as sofas, beds, dining tables, wardrobes and TVs.

100% of the profits raised from donations will go into the fight against heart disease and fund the BHF’s life-saving research. Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer and last year BHF shops raised over £31 million in the fight for every heartbeat. Donations, which are vital to the charity, are desperately needed so that BHF researchers can continue their relentless search for breakthroughs to beat heart disease. Julie Currie, BHF Area Manager, says: “We absolutely rely on the support of

the Stafford local community to keep us running and without their vital donations, we risk reducing funding for vital research into heart disease. “If each household were willing to spend just half an hour having a clear out and donating to their local BHF Furniture & Electrical store, they would be helping to save lives, it really is as simple as that. Please join the fight for every heartbeat and donate your unwanted household items to your local BHF store today.”

The Stafford BHF Furniture & Electrical store is located at 12 Princes Street, Stafford, ST16 2BN. To book a free collection for your unwanted things please call 01785 891 490 or visit bhf.org.uk/free. 28

Recipe Of The Month Courgette And Poppyseed Cake EQUIPMENT • 2 x 8” anodised removable bottom cake tins • 2 x lining kits for 8” tins or grease with butter and line withparchment paper. (both tins and lining kits available from www.takefood.co.uk) • Cake stand and dome or plate and slice • Food mixer with beater attachment • Spatula • Scales • Zester / fine grater • Large grater • Pestle and Mortar • Palette knife for spreading INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • •

300g of courgette, washed and coarsely grated 4 eggs 225g soft butter 225g caster sugar 225g self raising flour 1 tsp baking powder Zest and juice of 1 lime. 1 jar of lemon curd or email mike@takefood.co.uk for my recipe 1 tsp of poppy seeds A handful of pistachio nuts crushed in a pestle a mortar A pinch of salt 150g Cream cheese 300g Icing sugar

METHOD Pre-heat your oven to 180˚C It’s courgette season so I’m making a Courgette, lime and Poppyseed cake with cream cheese frosting, crushed pistachio and lemon curd filling. Cream together the softened butter and caster sugar until pale, light and fluffy. Then whisk the 4 eggs with a pinch of salt and weigh your flour.Gradually add a little of the 30

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014

whisked eggs and then a little flour alternatively until all combined and the batter is smooth. Adding too much egg at once can split your batter and that’s not good. Now fold your courgette, poppy seeds, zest and lime juice into the batter with a metal spoon. Wooden spoons can tend to knock air out of your mix. Equally distribute the batter between the 2 tins and bake for about 35 minutes or until springy and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Now in a bowl or food processor, add the cream cheese and icing sugar together and beat until quite stiff and smooth. Remember you don’t want it sliding down the side of your cake. When the sponges are out of the oven allow them to cool in the tins for 15 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack. Once completely cool start to build your cake on the plate putting a little lemon curd on the plate to stop the sponge from moving around. Now spread the first sponge with lemon curd, not too much, sprinkle with a little of the pistachios and place the second sponge on top. Glaze the sides of the 2 sponges with lemon curd and top with the cream cheese frosting and sprinkle the rest of the crushed pistachio on top. SERVING SUGGESTION Get your friends round and make a large pot of strong tea. www.instagram.com/mikewhitehurst_takefood www.takefood.co.uk mike@takefood.co.uk www.facebook.com/takefood! www.twitter.com/takefood

on their travels! go t in m er pp Pe d an ok Staffordshire Outlo much trouble for her. We could not have been happier with the friendly professional and personal service given by Kirsty and the extras that were granted at no extra cost were great including a huge picnic hamper full with cutlery (everything you needed and more), a bench and table to seat 4 and 2 deck chairs. We were now ready for our adventure!

We couldn’t have picked such a beautiful weekend, the sun was shining and Peppermint was off on her travels with the Staffordshire Outlook director Sharon, sister Michelle and niece Jaida. Picking Peppermint up from her base in Huntington Cannock, we could not wait to hit the road! You can with a campervan owner Kirstie Helley-Archer gave us a great induction to Peppermint and every question that we asked was promptly answered, nothing was too

34

Peppermint is a Type 2 VW Campervan, and was born in May of 2011 - So she is just a baby in the current Volkswagen world! Having never drove a campervan, we need not have worried, Peppermint was so smooth to drive and the power steering was a great bonus! We were soon feeling free on the road and having lots of attention from other drivers, Peppermint is definitely a head turner! Driving through the countryside to our location at Bwlchgwyn Farm between Fairbourne and Arthog, we were all enjoying the drive and with the CD stereo complete with an iPod/mp3 player socket playing our favourite songs, which is another bonus of Peppermint we could of drove for hours! With my niece Jaida in the back who is usually a nightmare whilst travelling but she was really enjoying this journey! Arriving at our site, we parked Peppermint up were taken aback from the fabulous views that greeted us. We set up peppermint up which was so simple, we popped up the roof and Jaida could not wait to

go to bed (which is something we never hear!). Peppermint sleeps up to four (plus several more with an additional VW camper awning/ tent!), with a double rock and roll bed big enough for two adults, and a pop top bunk with a weight limit of 16 stone (typically one adult or two children). A modern, complete and fully equipped kitchen, with fridge/freezer, two ring LPG hob, grill, and sink with water supply. Seating and dining area, complete with driver’s swivel chair! As the weather was so great we all sat outside Peppermint, playing lots of games and watching the sun set. As the night drew in, a very excited Jaida went to bed and loved sleeping on the pop up bunk and was soon flat out from all the excitement. The double rock and

roll bed was a great size and looked so inviting after a long fun day. The next morning we all commented on how comfortable and spacious the beds were. The sun was shining again so we were all looking forward to a day at Fairbourne Beach. Having found a great parking space opposite the beach, Peppermint was a great changing room to get into our beachwear.

Having spent hours on the beach we returned to Peppermint for a spot of lunch and a well-deserved cup of tea. We then headed back to the site for another great night! The following day when we were packing up for our trip home, we all wished we had Peppermint for the week so we could of toured around Wales some more, especially with the weather being so great! The fuel consumption of Peppermint was very cost effective as she has a

1.4 engine, so we were pleasantly surprised when we filled her up once we had got back to base. We are definitely going to book another weekend away in Peppermint, and if you and your family and friends are looking for ideas for a family holiday, Proms, Weddings, or days out then contact Kirsty on 07969 806669 or log onto www.youcanwithacampervan.co.uk

Newport C To rd o ff ta S n O rt ta Work To S Cyclists and walkers will soon benefit from a new cycle path linking Newport with Stafford as work on a final section is due to start. Staffordshire County Council’s highways team started work on the final 3km stretch of the cycleway on Monday 15 September. The cycleway is known as the Millennium Way and is part of the National Cycle Network 55. The works are expected to last for 20 weeks. The £300k improvements near Gnosall follow a previous £1.1m investment by the Council on the popular route. Local Staffordshire County Councillor and Cabinet Lead for Economy, Environment and Transport, Mark Winnington said: “It’s great to see the final stage of this project underway and once complete it will provide an excellent facility for local cyclists and walkers to enjoy. Cycling and walking are fun activities that not only help people lead healthier and happier lives but also

“Finishing this final section will also provide a welcome boost to our local tourism and rural economies by encouraging more people to visit and cycle through our great county.” Highways teams will work with partner organisations, alongside volunteers from the Staffordshire Volunteering Network to complete the work. This section of the path will remain closed while the work is being done but once the final section is complete people will be able to enjoy the 3-metre wide, 14-mile stretch of modern cycleway. Staffordshire already has good access to the National Cycling Network

(NCN) which connect with many local routes across the County. Local cycling maps for all districts are available from local libraries and you can find out more at www.staffordshire.gov.uk Edward Healey, Area Manager for Sustrans, said: “The final link in National Cycle Network route 55 is welcomed as it provides the important final connection with recently completed route into Newport, which will enable people to travel there sustainably and gives complete connectivity with Stafford. Many people already enjoy the route for leisure and this will further enhance their enjoyment of the surrounding countryside.”

Therapy e v ti c A h it w n o ti c le e S Shoe

In this article I will address the area of shoe selection for runners and discuss some of the misconceptions that continue to be published despite research evidence to the contrary. How many times have you been told you ‘over-pronate’ and because of this you need a specific form of motion control running trainer? The fact is that pronation is an entirely normal part of the gait cycle and pronation has never been shown to be strongly predictive of injury! So why would we want to control it? Well this all seems to have started historically in the 1940’s with the ‘Wet foot test’ outlined by Harris & Beath which was then used as the basis for shoe selection in the 1980’s and continues to be utilised by many retailers and running magazines. This system assumes that if you have a ‘flat/ pronated’ foot you need a motion control shoe and if you have a ‘high/supinated’ foot you need a

neutral/cushioned shoe. We know that research actually suggests that selecting your shoes in this manner is not evidence based and potentially injurious (Richards et al 2010 & Ryan et al 2010). This system also assumes that ‘aligning’ the lower limb would in some way reduce your injury risk and again there is no evidence which supports this to date! There is a high degree of variation between us all and mild/ moderate pronation is observed most commonly in studies to date. So then where does this leave you when you are selecting shoes for running? Well there are some key points below which may help you to select shoes in an evidence informed manner 1. Comfort – Research does suggest that selecting shoes on the basis of comfort may reduce injury risk but also leads to customer satisfaction and comfortable running!. Go for shoes with adequate toe box height and width to allow your foot to function and also ensure you have adequate length to avoid black toe nails!

2. Lightest you can tolerate – Research suggests that for every 100g you reduce your shoe weight you reduce oxygen consumption by nearly 1%. That can equate to 15-20 mins time reduction over the course of a marathon. However you have to ‘earn the right’ to be in a lighter shoe and transition steadily over several weeks (see below) 3. Transition steadily – When changing shoe type then transition slowly. I generally advise 1 minute more per run in new shoes i.e start run in new shoes and swap back and gradually add minutes 4. Only change shoes for good reason – If you want to perform better, you are injured or have a history of recurrent injury then these are good reason to alter your footwear type. If you are happy with your performance and not injured then stick with the shoes you are running in! Active Therapy is a specialist running clinic and provides treatment, rehabilitation, gait analysis and shoe selection advice for runners of all standards.

eat purine-rich food, they develop hyperuricaemia as a consequence.

When there is too much uric acid in your blood, it can no longer dissolve and it crystallizes into urate crystals. Your body then attacks these crystals, causing the tissues to become inflamed. The crystals usually settle where blood circulation is poor, such as the joints in your extremities. This is why most gout attacks first occur in the big toe. Even though the symptoms of gout may subside within a few days, you may still have too much uric acid in your blood, and future gout attacks are likely. While the exact causes of gout are not fully understood, some factors are known. Some people have a genetic predisposition to develop gout. Gout may also be related to other medical conditions. Diet also accounts for some gout; foods that contain purines, a kind of protein found in meat and fish, produces uric acid in the body. Some people have poor uric acid metabolism, so when they

• Warm, burning pain with swelling in and around a joint, such as fingers or knee. Gout usually starts in a big toe joint. • Pain usually begins during the night. Even light pressure from a sock or sheet is intolerable. • Pain or discomfort suddenly increases and lasts most of the night, then gradually subsides over several days. • Peeling itchy skin that may appear red, angry, shiny and infected around the affected joint. • Limited mobility in the affected joint. • Lumps or nodules (called tophi) appear around the affected area.

Symptoms of Gout

Treatment For those people with an on-going gout episode then Colchicine is prescribed to return the urate crystals back to uric acid fluid.

For some people prone to gout episodes then Allopurinol is usually prescribed. This is taken one a day for life. Some people have to have both medicines, but this is unusual. Chiropodists/Podiatrists are often the first professionals to diagnose gout due to frequent patient contact.

The Masters of Magic Congress awarded it this year to Paul for his outstanding services to magic. Paul said he was “so proud to receive this award”. Whilst on holiday at the age of 11, Paul read a book on ‘How to Entertain at Parties’ and since then he has been entertaining the masses, from tricks for his fellow servicemen during his national service to audiences in their millions on prime time TV. Opportunity literally Knocked in 1970 when Paul was spotted by a TV producer and he was soon hosting his own show The Paul Daniels Show (BBC1) with his future wife Debbie McGee for 15 years. Pet Pics by Lyn Kelly As a child I always sketched, shopping trips with Mum would always result in new pencils, crayons and sketch pads. I desperately wanted to go to art school, however my father said it wasn’t a proper job, so I didn’t persue my dream. Many years later I decided to take up art again, I have now been painting for 14 years. Many people began commenting on how good my work was, and encouraging me to start selling my work. I have now taken a massive step of turning my hobby into my career, and finally living my

childhood dream with my business, Pet Pics by Lyn. I work in all kinds of medium but particularly pastels and acrylic. Pastels give a luminous and velvety feel to a painting, whereas acrylic can be vibrant and bold, but add texture.

April 2015 er ft a k or w ill w s g in th Pension Freedom: How In the last Budget, George Osborne announced some revolutionary changes to the way retirement savers can draw their money from their pension, when he said: “Pensioners will have complete freedom to draw down as much or as little of their pension pot as they want, anytime they want. No caps. No drawdown limits.” The changes will give pension plan holders more flexibility over how they access their money. Similar changes have been introduced in Australia and the United States and suggest that when given more freedom over their finances people do act responsibly. From April 2015, if you are aged over 55, you will be able to access your pensions with complete freedom. Instead of being mandated, under Government rules, to convert savings into a chunks of annual income, you will be able to take out as much or as little as you like and as often as required. Historically, most savers with personal pensions have bought annuities, which turns a pension into a regular income that lasted for life. The alternative for wealthier savers was to use “income drawdown”, where the money remained invested as an income was taken. However, a restriction on withdrawal limits applied for all but the very wealthiest who could evidence at least £20,000 annual income from other pensions. From April 2015, you will have three main choices: •

Withdraw all of your pension money immediately;

Leave it invested and take withdrawals, in the form of lump sums or income, when required;

Buy an annuity.

The ability to draw up to 25% of your accumulated fund as tax free amount remains. Withdrawals over the 25% threshold will be liable for income tax, with this payable at your highest marginal rate. This is an important point, as it could mean you paying an avoidable tax bill if you access a large amount of your pension fund in a single tax year. If you’re in a private sector defined benefit scheme (ie. a company pension which will pay an income linked to your years of service and salary), you’ll have the choice to transfer it to a more flexible kind of pension, if you wish to take full advantage of the new rules. That choice applies before you start taking the pension. The option to transfer is also available for people who are in public sector schemes which are ‘funded’ (eg. the Local Government Pension Scheme and Universities Superannuation Scheme). There’s an important safeguard here – before you go ahead with this kind of transfer, you’ll need to take advice from a professional financial adviser who is independent from the pension scheme and authorised by the regulator. There’s a lot to weigh-up when considering whether to transfer your guaranteed pension. As the Government said “for the

majority of people, but not all, it will remain in their best interest to stay in their defined benefit scheme”. To limit the potential for abuse of the new rules, there will be a limit on the amount you will be able to pay into your pension. It will drop from £40000 to £10000, if you take over and above the 25% tax free cash limit. The Government is going to increase the minimum age at which people can access their private pension under the new tax rules, from age 55 to 57 in 2028. This affects those born from March 1973 onwards, and means people will need to wait until their 57th rather than 55th birthday to take money out of their private pension. This change is also being extended to public sector schemes, except the Police, Fire Service and Armed Forces pension schemes, where the qualifying age isn’t changing. To help you the Government has decided that every saver will be entitled to obtain basic guidance, at no cost, from either the Pensions Advisory Service or the Money Advice Service. These two organisations are linked to the Government and do not sell products. For tailored advice, savers will still need to pay for an independent financial adviser. eturns: Self-Assessment Tax R o Avoid T s e k ta is M n o m m o C The As anyone who is self-employed or runs their own business will know, HMRC requires a full breakdown of expenses and taxes by the end of January. For many, this means hours talking to their accountant and searching for lost documents. If there are mistakes in a return, then the whole process can result in hours and – in the worst cases – money wasted needlessly. Here are the common errors people make when filing their self-assessment returns and how you can avoid them. The common typo The most common mistake made by small business owners or entrepreneurs is simple: not triple checking every last detail. There are plenty of mistakes that can creep into your form, so, while it may seem like an obvious piece of advice, force yourself to look over it again and again until you are absolutely certain that every piece of information is recorded in the right place. When you are satisfied that the form is correctly filled in, check it again. Not using an accountant If you are still unsure about even the slightest element of your return, then ask your accountant. Accountants are the experts: they have the specialist knowledge to help you through the self-assessment process, and ignoring them is not advisable. They may be a small, added expense, but when you consider that you incur an automatic fixed penalty of £100 if your return is late (not to mention the supplementary charges if you still don’t get your return in), it is clearly worth the outlay. Ignoring your business Accountants also have the added benefit of allowing you to focus on your business while they get on with all the paperwork! I would particularly recommend hiring an accountant to walk you through the forms if this is your first year of tax returns. Failing to understand the financial year It is also essential that you understand the financial year. The time you are recording is from 6thApril 2013 until 5th April 2014. The crucial thing to remember is not when you were paid, but when you sent out the invoice – that is the information HMRC is interested in. If you received your payment after the deadline, yet sent out the invoice within those dates, then make sure you include it on the return. 50

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014

Not leaving time Even if you work with an accountant, you will most likely still have to dedicate some time to the form yourself. Small business owners I have spoken to in the past have tried to juggle their time between running their business and completing their tax return. I always advise them to put some dedicated time aside to concentrate on their return. If you are at home, squirrel yourself away; if you’re at work, lock the door to your office. It pays to avoid interruptions for a couple of hours to get it right first time. Rip off the plaster – it will be quick and painless, but don’t leave it until the last minute. Not discounting VAT VAT is an area that often trips up business owners who don’t use accounting software, but manually input their finances onto a spreadsheet. Those who have invested in accounting software will find that when they enter receipts, the programme will automatically make allowances for the VAT included in the expense and remove it. However, if you don’t use this kind of software, make sure you remember to discount the VAT – if you don’t, your form will be returned and you run the risk of missing the deadline. Not paying HMRC Finally, do not forget to actually pay your return! It is not uncommon for small business owners to send in their returns and think they are done, but you still have to pay HMRC once the form is dispatched. There are a variety of ways to pay, including by cash or debit card, but check on the HMRC website to be certain of how you are eligible to pay. Ultimately, this period need not be as stressful as is widely reported. Avoid the kind of pitfalls listed above, and if you are in any doubt about anything, enlist an accountant. The Stafford Castle Classic car show, in Staffordshire, has celebrated its 10 year at this years show. It has now become one of the major classic car shows in Staffordshire. The event is becoming more and more popular, with this year’s event we had almost 200 exhibitors displaying their cars at the show which was held on Sunday, 3rd August at Stafford

Castle. The exhibits ranged from the 1930’s to the present day. Thousands of visitors flocked to the show, especially with the good weather. There was also a military vehicle display and classic motorcycles section. There was a popular mini landrover ride for the little ones too, as well as free archery lessons, so this was proved to be a great day out for all the family! The show is organised by the Stafford Borough Council, and Mark Hartwell, the Heritage Sites Manager said: ” It was our biggest show so far and we

are very pleased with the support of the public. We are very pleased with the success and popularity of the event. It is an event for all the family.” Sherif Hegazy, one of the Judges on the day, said: “The diversity and quality of the exhibited motor vehicles was outstanding. It was very difficult to make a decision on the winners of the various categories.” The show was sponsored by RPH motors and AA Silencers from Stafford.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014

Exam? is Th ss Pa To h ug no E d oo 11+ Is My Child Really G How does your child perform under pressure? I run Assessment Days for potential 11+ students, and it is very interesting to observe that students average grades goes down by about 15% when they first sit these exams with me. The psychological side of things are so important. Do you feel that your child would be able to cope with these conditions? I do hope that this guidance helps you. If you feel that you want to talk further about your child then please feel free to give me a call and I would be very happy indeed to offer any help I can. Kind Regards Mr Laurence Dalton BA in English Literature, PGCE

Having taught 11+ tuition for quite some time now, I am struck with how many students are preparing locally for the entrance exams for the local Grammar Schools. I do feel for parents and students who are, unfortunately, duped into thinking that they are on a pathway to success. Last year saw 1500 students enter the exam for one local Grammar School, and my thoughts are that at least half of them were nowhere near the standard required.

Hi Mr Dalton, As I am sure you can imagine, we are all over the moon. I couldn’t have dreamed she would get an A, especially this early. She has a wonderful feeling at the moment, all her hard work has paid off. I am so grateful to you for the guidance you have given, your method really is unique. Thank you, Vanessa

So why is it that this is happening? The clear answer is that parents want the very best for their children. Of course, I do too for my son and it is a natural desire to want to give the very best opportunities to your children. Yet a true and honest preparation for the 11+ entrance exam is difficult, emotional and saturated with hard work. So any parent who is considering starting this journey would do well to consider the following guidance to assess whether their child really is capable of sitting this exam: Do they really want to study hard and pass this exam? In my experience, this is the key issue. Parents may well want the success, but if the child is an unwilling learner my suggestion would be that you really are wasting effort and money. Are they on the higher table/sets at school? To speak bluntly, only the top students in local schools stand a chance of success. Be realistic. If your child is not being recognised at school as being educationally gifted, then this should be an indication for you regarding whether to continue. Do you have time to help them prepare for this journey? Parents, it really is not enough to just hire a tutor and expect all the learning/development to take place in that lesson. I, for example, give my parents a structure for what they need to do at home as well to ensure that learning is taking place there. Do you have time to commit to this?

atre 1894-2014 e h T d n ra G n to p m a Wolverh Years of Theatre Celebrating 120

Wolverhampton Grand Theatre will be celebrating 120 years of Theatre this December; we caught up with Chief Executive Peter Cutchie who gave us a brief history of the theatre. Following on from a long tradition of theatres in Wolverhampton stretching back to 1750; in December 1894 the Grand Theatre opened on Lichfield Street to popular acclaim. Before the doors even opened a contemporary reporter noted that ‘for those of us who have watched the red brick shell rapidly overhaul and outgrow the surrounding scaffolding, this is truly a grand theatre.’ Replacing the Theatre Royal – the site of which became the Central Library - it was built to complement 54

the newly opened Victoria Hotel (the Britannia) next door. What made the Grand all the more remarkable was the speed with which it was built. From the laying of the foundation stone by Mrs C. T. Mander, Mayoress of Wolverhampton on June 28 1894 barely six months elapsed before a 2,151 capacity audience was seated in the auditorium to enjoy the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company perform Gilbert & Sullivan’s, Utopia Limited. The Grand Theatre is one of eminent Victorian theatre architect, C J Phipp’s, most enduring, intimate and beautiful creations. Constructed by Wolverhampton builders, Henry Gough for £10,000 the Grand has been a Wolverhampton icon for 120 years. The theatre is and has been fondly regarded by many generations of Wulfrunians and today still attracts almost three hundred thousand visitors annually through its doors.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014

Barbara Windsor has performed many times at The Grand Theatre and has lots of fond memories

In this 120th year it is only right to celebrate the ongoing success of the Grand and acknowledge the debt owed to its staff, past and present, for their hard work and loyalty to the theatre. It is also important to acknowledge the commitment, especially in terms of voluntary effort or financial support of its Board of Trustees, the Friends of the Grand, our Sponsors, Business Club members, stakeholders especially Wolverhampton City Council and last but most importantly YOU the patron.

Backstage Crew in 1955 for Annie Get Your Gun

Nest season kicks off with the smash hit show Dirty Dancing, the stage version of the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers classic musical film, Top Hat, a number of major dramas including two visits from the National Theatre, some exciting one night variety shows, performances from our local operatic societies and dance showcases from a range of very talented local children. Of course it would not be a complete season without the highlight for many, of any Grand Theatre year, our annual pantomime Cinderella starring Julian Clary.

The existence of the Grand Theatre is strongly supported by all those who recognise the value a vibrant theatre brings not only to the cultural life of Wolverhampton citizens but also the very important contribution it makes to the economic well being of the City. Celebrate this 120th Anniversary Season with us, enjoy the variety of shows on offer and please start telling everyone you know loudly and clearly that MY THEATRE MATTERS!

Two new television technologies are completely changing TV for the better – right now. As you’d probably expect Samsung are at the forefront of both with some amazing new products. The two technologies combine to give you a television range of outstanding beauty and quality Curved TV is now possible and its led to some gorgeous designs; these new Samsung curved LED televisions really do look as good switched off as they do with your favourite show on. But it’s far from being all about stunning good looks. There are performance advantages to the new curved screens. The first advantage is a vastly improved sense of depth and realism thanks to Samsungs Auto Depth Enhancer which makes you feel as if you’re actually there. It analyses different parts of the screen and applies contrast enhancements to each to provide a superior sense of depth. Secondly the curved screen naturally produces a wider field of view and more natural viewing angles. 56

These important benefits allow you to see clear detail even in the corners of the screen. No matter where you sit, you’ll enjoy the best possible viewing experience. The third benefit is improved contrast levels for a clearer picture. On a curved screen, unlike a flat one, light naturally travels towards the viewer, so no matter what angle you sit at to watch, you’ll see a crisp detailed picture. “At Webbs we have curved Samsung TV’s on show and we regularly demonstrate the benefits to our customers” say’s store manager Mark Tranter. “over 80% of these people are so impressed they go on to purchase. Of course we know are products inside and out and can show customers the differences and answer any questions they have”. “A great delivery and installation service is important too, we’ll even go out to our customers home to advise on the best screen size and where to site the new TV. We deliver promptly and install to a professional standard whether on the wall or on furniture. The second major leap in television technology is all about picture quality. It is of course 4K Ultra High Definition. With astonishingly high

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014

detail levels the picture is so life like and realistic it’s amazing. Samsung UHD televisions deliver 3840x2160 pixel resolution levels. The picture shows up to four times the level of detail of even the best high definition sets currently available. Mark says “If you’re looking to replace your TV, you want something better than you’ve already got, or else why change? 4K UHD is much, much better and it means you can sit closer to a bigger screen without any problems. We’re seeing lots of customers trading up to Ultra High Definition, but also to bigger screen sizes. With ultra slim frameless designs people can get them in without dominating their living rooms and they’re delighted with the quality”. “We’ll even let them have 2 sets in their home to help choose which is the best. We’re really proud to offer such high levels of service and our customers love it”. So if you are in the market for a new TV you really should check out the all new Samsung curved Ultra High Definition range. All you need then is a top quality retailer – so visit Webbs.

Ro Back From The Dead by

b Taylor

The new Peugeot 208 GTi shakes up the modern hot hatch malaise and stirs Rob Taylor’s soul. Peugeot 205 GTi: like James Bond, 007; you know the name, you know the number. Forgive the misty-eyed introduction; but it falls so easily to hand, such is the significance of the seminal 1980s hot hatch. Peugeot has struggled ever since to recapture the 205’s delicious je ne sais quoi, with every new attempt being met with a mixture of melancholy and dread. That is, of course, until now; until the arrival of the new 208 GTi. But let me first make something clear: this is not halfhearted lip service designed to appease devotees of past glories; no, this is a car in its own right, as it should be. Admittedly there’s the occasional, respectful nod to the past - the GTi badge on the C-pillar, for example - but this is obviously an entirely more grown-up car, aimed at an increasingly discerning and spoilt body of buyers. But that’s not to say the 208’s appearance is beige and boring and won’t tug at the heart-strings of the young - it will. There’s 17” alloys, LED daytime running-lights, chunky side sills, dual exhausts and a rear spoiler to capture their imagination and it is, to my eyes, a picture-perfect example of sporty styling with just the right amount of restraint. There’s similar refinement and maturity on the road too. The GTi is not shouty at start-up, nor is it particularly uncouth under acceleration, it is instead perfectly intouch with what is the telling dichotomy of hot hatches: driveability and usability. Cars of this ilk usually bring with them a ride akin to falling down stairs on a landslide of bricks; given the predilection for most manufacturers 58

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014

to chase infinitesimal gains in handling and this spoils day-to-day life behind the wheel. Equally, incremental gains in performance sap fuel economy and can often leave “sporty” engines feeling gutless unless screaming at the rev-limiter and devoid of low-end torque. The Peugeot suffers from none of the above: its performance is torque-rich - 203 lb ft, in fact - thanks to a meaty band of turbo’d power from its 197 bhp 1.6 litre engine; it can get close to its official fuel economy number of 47.9 mpg (I averaged 43.3 mpg); and its suspension set-up is just-so, never damaging to spinal columns, yet composed enough to let the GTi dance its way through every corner you throw at it. And in a straight line it can out-drag almost all of its kith and kin: 0-62 mph is 6.8 seconds and top speed is 143 mph. But enough numbers, for now. This is a car that makes you feel the stirrings of your soul, not think your way through the driving experience with a calculator. In fact, there’s really only one number you need concern yourself with and that’s price: £18,895. Expensive for 1980s’ Man; real-value for Modern Man. The cabin is a thoroughly exciting and sensuous place to sit: the red-stitching on the seat and chrome on the gear-stick are obligatory, but the delightfully tactile qualities of the plastics and switchgear are a bonus - as is parking sensors, dual-zone airconditioning, automatic headlights and DAB radio. So then, it is to cliché that I turn to see off this sojourn with the 208 GTi: the little Peugeot is a car for today; a car unwilling to skulk in the shadow of former glory; a car which is sure to be a hot hatch standard-bearer for years to come.

san New Nissan Juke - Nis

Design Studio

Personalisation becomes an integral part of new Juke ownership with the Nissan Design Studio personalisation packs available on the Acenta Premium and Tekna grades. The customisation packages provide opportunity to add individual touches to the new model, with an array of colours and quirks to tailor the look of the interior and exterior. In standard form, the Juke interior theme is a sophisticated grey on Visia and Acenta, but Nissan designers have found ways to make the interior even more bold and dynamic on the higher grades. The all new Nissan Design Studio interior personalisation pack allows for brightly coloured inserts to be added, free of charge on Acenta Premium and Tekna. With a choice of black, red, white or even bright yellow - you can change the centre console, door finishers, air vent rings, and even the stitching of the gear knob, steering wheel, seats and meter hood lid leather cover. Depending on the model, there are two styles of fabric for the seat upholstery - Premium cloth on Acenta Premium and leather trim on Tekna. To keep the Juke as one of the most distinctively designed vehicles on the roads, the exterior pack also comes equipped with the choice of the four new colours (red, white, black and yellow) with customisation options available for the mirror cap covers, headlamp finishers right through to the front and rear bumper finishers. Finally, not only does the Nissan Design Studio offer record levels of

personalisation options for the interior and exterior of the new Juke but now, an array of styling options for the alloy wheels are also available. The new Juke’s latest colour palette of red, white, black and bright yellow can be customised onto the 18 inch alloy wheels to coordinate with the rest of the exciting new styling options. Changes have also been made to the shape of the trunk area in two-wheel drive models to boost luggage space by an impressive 40 per cent, taking the overall capacity to a class-leading 354 litres. Unlike rivals, Juke can carry a large and a medium suitcase at the same time, and is also deep and wide enough to carry a chassis-type pushchair. Versatility is further enhanced with flat folding rear seat, making it easier to load large objects, while the inclusion of a two-stage floor in the luggage area makes the space even more flexible. A further final option opens a whole new world to Acenta, Acenta Premium and Tekna owners - literally. A large open-air panoramic glass roof allows

not just daylight to flood into the cabin but also fresh air as required. When opened, the panel sits on top of the rear portion of the roof so as not to steal interior headroom. The glass panel measures 964mm wide by 837mm long and covers two thirds of the roof area. This is matched by an opening width of 693mm and an opening length of 301mm to add to the feeling of airiness in the cockpit. The Juke, as with the rest of the Nissan crossover family, comes with the latest generation of NissanConnect, which now offers smartphone connectivity with access to a variety of apps ranging from social media platforms to entertainment - including internet radio - through a large, 5.8in colour touch screen. The latest generation satellite navigation system integrates Google Online Search. This application offers the most up-to-date location based information: fuel stations hotels, restaurants, among many others. All these points of interest can be searched through Google’s handsfree voice command and categorized by distance and customer ratings. A send-to-car function also allows drivers to search for their destination at home and send instructions to NissanConnect system at the click of a button. The system includes Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone integration as well as Aux-in and USB slots. When not in infotainment mode, the screen doubles as a monitor for the newest version of Nissan’s pioneering Around View Monitor which gives a complete real-time 360 degree ‘helicopter’ view around the car to make manoeuvring as safe and easy as possible.

And the plug-in hybrid vehicle is proving a hit at Brindley Mitsubishi in Cannock, which has already sold more than 100 Outlander PHEVs since they went on sale in early June.

awareness, increasing sales of all models in our range. “The Outlander PHEV is the first SUV plug-in hybrid in the UK market that boasts 4WD capability with an EV range of 32.5 miles and emissions as low as 44g/km. The vehicle is extraordinary, it’s very different to other hybrids and our customers love it.” There’s more good news on the financial front too. With just 5 per cent benefit in kind (BIK) over 12 months, a company car driver getting behind the wheel of a PHEV enjoys a virtual pay rise of thousands of pounds per year.

The SMMT statistics show the highly anticipated Outlander PHEV took 43% of all the successful applications for the Government’s £5,000 grant in July. Prices for the Outlander PHEV range from £28,249 to £34,999 (post-grant). The Outlander PHEV has received huge levels of interest, driven by the vehicle’s outstanding fuel consumption of 148mpg and low emission credentials of 44g/km, meaning no Vehicle Excise Duty is payable. r Alphabet Soup by Rob Taylo

Using more letters than a game of Scrabble, Rob Taylor addresses the new Seat Ibiza SC FR Edition. A ‘FR’ badge on the rear of any Seat stands for Formula Racing. A curious nomenclature understood only by elite motoring cognoscenti, being as it is as-yet not so hackneyed and everyday as ‘GTi’ or ‘RS’. Sounds promising though, doesn’t it? The car onto which the badge is affixed looks promising too - and not just from the rear. This new Seat Ibiza SC FR Edition’s front-end is in equal parts preening and purposeful, when accentuated by Emocion Red - maybe, in this case, ‘FR’ stands for Flaming Red as well, I wonder. But it’s not just easy on the eye; it’s brimming with Mensa-levels of intelligence and the kind of kit typically fitted to luxury lorries from Bentley et al. I am, of course, referring to a clever bit of technology known as ‘ACT’. Yep, it’s another acronym of sorts, but bear with me: it stands for Active Cylinder Technology, which does exactly what it says on the tin: ergo the engine has the facility to switch seamlessly between two and four cylinders in an effort to drive up fuel economy and drive down pollution. Of course, you may already have taken umbrage at use of the word ‘seamless’, but I can assure you it is, such is the speed of transition at work. The official combined fuel economy figure of 60.1mpg is credible too - even I managed to get into the low-fifties, with about as much thought to parsimony as a Parisian parsnip peddler. A singularly intelligent Stop/ Start system assists in this matter also; never cutting in too-soon, leaving you in a jam. 64

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014

And out on the open road, with caution thrown to the wind, the little Seat is a revelation. It’s a thoroughly well-engineered car with a 138 bhp engine which revs with a delicious freedom and has all the requisite torque - 184 lb ft - from its turbo to make pottering about easy. It’s quick too: 0-62 mph is faster than a saddle-sore dispatch rider with a penchant for bad Indian food, at a mere 7.8 seconds and its top speed is 130 mph. Engine and road noise rarely figure inside a cabin which is marked out by copious amounts of toys, including Sat-Nav, air conditioning, DAB radio, cruise control and Bluetooth; not to mention sporting seats from Seat’s ‘ever-so-comfy’ range. You might even say, no-one makes seats quite like Seat. The ergonomics are spoton; the plastics and switchgear, tactile and well-made. And the Ibiza’s chiselled exterior lines fail to intrude too much into the cabin space and while room in the rear for adults is limited, you can spec a five-door variant. While nothing says sporty quite like red seatbelts - and the FR Edition has them - big 17” alloys can’t be far behind; so too red brake calipers and tinted back windows. And while such features may be too shouty for some people’s taste, they don’t make the ride unbearably hard or unpleasant; nor does the suspension set-up. All that’s left for me to do then is to finish with a forcefully fluent flourish: fast, frugal and fun, perhaps? No; that would be glib and betray just quite what a fine accomplishment this car is at just under £16,000. I’d prefer to steer well clear of any automotive alliteration and end as I started. Suffice it to say: ‘FR’ now also stands instead for Fantastically Rewarding.
