being Centre ll e W d n a h lt a e H ld e Nuffi Nothing is more important to Nuffield Health than getting people fit and healthy, that’s why they’ve recently taken over multiple gyms across the country - including the former Virgin Active site at Wolverhampton - to create their own Fitness and Wellbeing Centres, which bring everything needed to improve the health and fitness of the nation under one roof. We met up with Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital Director, Tony Avery and Manager of Wolverhamptons new Nuffield Fitness and Wellbeing Centre, Damion Groom, to hear about the exciting venture. SO: What was the motivation behind Nuffield Health creating their Fitness and Wellbeing Centres? TA: Nuffield Health has long been keen to improve the health and wellbeing of the nation and so made a decision to help highlight the importance of prevention, not just cure, with their strategy of establishing centres across the country that help people to improve their overall health and fitness. We have hospitals located all over the country and wanted to bring a Fitness and Wellbeing Centre to each of those areas. Although there are already plenty of centres up-and-running, we acquired nine Virgin Active gyms - including our Wolverhampton location - and one LA Fitness gym in August this year. SO: Are the centres open to everybody or just patients of the Nuffield Hospital? TA: The centres are open to everybody - we want everyone to benefit. We offer a great range of memberships to suit all requirements for the general public, corporate clients, as well as specialist rehabilitation pathways for our patients, which serves to help them with their recovery. The Nuffield is a not for profit organisation, we’re always looking for ways to give back to the community and how we can meet the needs of the healthcare nation. 04

Manager of Wolverhamptons new Nuffield Fitness and Wellbeing Centre, Damion Groom and Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital Director, Tony Avery

Our monthly awareness campaigns are designed to educate the public on common health problems. SO: That sounds like a great idea, tell us more. DG: Last month we focused on women’s health as well breast cancer awareness, this month we’re drawing attention to men’s health issues. As well as providing lots of informationpacked leaflets, we also have a ‘Meet Our Experts’ event. Everyone is welcome to attend - whether a member or not - to hear an expert from the Nuffield Hospital speak on the subject. There’s plenty of advice about prevention and useful information from our personal trainers as to how you can tailor your work-out to address certain issues. SO: I can see that promoting good health really is a high priority at the centre. DG: Yes it is. When someone joins our centre they’re automatically offered a ‘Mini Health M.O.T’, which allows us to help them look at particular areas of their health and lifestyle which might need some attention. TA: We’re the only organisation to offer our members a service like this. Our 12 point check looks at things like your cholesterol, diabetes’s risk, BMI and stress levels. DG: Once we’ve looked at all of these factors we can help you work on areas you need to improve

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

on and we’ll invite you to have another check three months later. We’ll also be launching our new interactive ‘Health Score’ system in January which will help members track things like how much exercise they’ve done, what their stress levels are if they’ve had enough sleep and adequate nutrition. It’s another useful tool to monitor your overall health and wellbeing. SO: What can people expect to find at the Health and Wellbeing Centre? DG: We’ve got fantastic facilities, there’s both an outdoor and indoor pool, a well equipped gym, two aerobic studios, a sauna and steam room, we’ve got an on-site beauty salon and hairdressers, as well as a restaurant and crèche - where we hold lots of great activities to keep the kids entertained. We have our own team of eight personal trainers who are available to help you with your specific requirements. Both off and on peak membership are available, as well as short-term three month agreement. We also provide membership for 16 and 17 year olds. Our membership is competitively priced and offers real quality and value-for-money. TA: The facilities are great; we’re really excited about the venture and have plenty of projects and investment planned for the club over the next six months.

stmas Market

hri Gnosall’s Victorian C Eight years ago a particularly innovative member of the Friends of St. Lawrence thought it might be a good idea to have a Christmas Market with a Victorian theme. The first one was approached with a certain amount of trepidation, wondering if it would be a success. The answer to that is the fact that the eighth annual Victorian Christmas Market will take place on Saturday 6th December at St. Lawrence Church, Gnosall. The market will open at 9.30, with the entertainment

starting at 10.00 a.m., and close with the Draw for the raffle of luxury hampers at approximately 4.00 p.m. There will be the usual eclectic selection of over 30 stalls selling everything from hand turned wooden items and quilts to cakes and candles. The live musical entertainment, which goes on all day, includes the local school choir, a swing band , folk music, a guitarist, a music group and the widely acclaimed Gnosall Singers. The entrance charge of £2.00 includes tea, coffee and cake (children are free). There will also be home made soup and rolls for sale. It is testimony to the happy atmosphere of the event that stall-holders come back year after year – many saying that it is their favourite on the circuit. All monies raised by the event go towards the maintenance of the building of St. Lawrence. It is, apparently, one of the five finest

Norman churches in the country and Gnosall is incredibly fortunate to have it in its environs. But you don’t stand for over a thousand years without bits dropping off and unfortunately – unlike most countries – ancient churches in Britain receive no help towards their upkeep from either local authorities or central government. It is usually all down to a small congregation and a group of local people who may not be church goers at all but appreciate the wonderful building in their midst and want to help keep it standing for the next thousand years.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not

just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock

and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

International Evening

Dr Janis Lomas, President, S I Cannock & District with John Chapman, Bletchley Park

Over 90 members and guests enjoyed SI Cannock & District’s International Evening in this, their Diamond Anniversary year. President Janis Lomas welcomed everyone to the evening, held at the Barns, giving a particular welcome to Midland Chase Region President Edna Shafer-Hughes who spoke briefly about the International work of the organisation which has over 80,000 members in clubs throughout the world. Through their work enabling, educating and empowering women SI has a voice on the United Nations Economic and Social Council and is actively involved with this. President Janis also welcomed John Chapman, a guide at Bletchley Park and the speaker for the evening. During the year Janis, an historian, has been highlighting the lives and work of women who have made a difference, John continued the theme in his talk about Women at Bletchley. John was a wonderful speaker, his passion for Bletchley was obvious as he told stories about some of the women who had worked there, many 12

as code breakers, during WW2. He gave a background of the use of codes to disguise messages through the centuries, ending with the Enigma machine. This would supposedly provide unbreakable codes – the men and women who worked at Bletchley proved this was not so! They were invited to be involved in this top secret work because of their abilities with such things as crosswords. One lady returned to Bletchley recently and explained that she had been chosen because she was, in the early 1940’s, able to complete The Times crossword in 25 minutes. Now in her 80’s she said that she is not so good these days – now it usually takes her 35 minutes to complete it! Another woman who had worked on code breaking broke the codes which put the Italian Navy out of the War – she was aged 19 when this happened. Bletchley was possibly the first equal opportunities employer: 3 women to 1 man worked there. John told of the daring exploits of some of the women, one who visited Bletchley recently aged 90 was one of 4 women parachuted into Europe. Another, to the total shock of her family

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

who were visiting with her, said that she had been involved with Japanese work and promptly spoke in fluent Japanese. Her family had not known she spoke any language other than English and had known nothing of her work at Bletchley. Soroptimist Maggie Shore expressed everyone’s thanks to John for such an interesting talk and for explaining the role these wonderful women played in WW2. She told him that members are looking forward to learning more when they visit Bletchley early next year. A raffle held on the night raised £235 for the SI Emergency Fund, meaning that funds can be sent to disaster areas in the world as soon as required. President Janis thanked everyone for their generosity and thanked all who had helped to organise such a super evening.

Christmas already? The event is always well attended and is instrumental in enabling the Singers to continue making major donations to the churches in Brewood village. ... And seek new members to maintain their success At its recent annual general meeting, members of the Singers were told of how their concerts had, over the last year, benefitted churches in the surrounding area as well as youth organisations and charities to the tune of more than £1000.

Brewood singers plan for a busy few months. Carol concerts, already being planned by the Brewood Singers, will be given at a number of venues this year, culminating on Thursday 18th December in the Church of St Mary & St Chad in Brewood. This traditional concert has become a firm favourite for almost 40 years. New music is always a feature of this popular concert and, this year, will include carols written especially for the Brewood Singers.

In his annual report, Musical Director David Brookes stressed the need for new members, explaining that the continued success and popularity of Brewood Singers’ concerts was very much dependent on recruiting new members, particularly tenors and basses. If you enjoy singing, and would like to join the Brewood Singers, whose membership ranges in age from early 20’s upwards, please contact the Secretary on 01902 850377, or Musical Director, David Brookes at singersbrewood@ gmail.com. They rehearse in the Jubilee Hall, Brewood each Thursday between 8.10pm and 10pm. You can also find the Singers on Facebook ‘Brewood Singers’ and follow us on Twitter @BrewoodSingers.

Stone Handbell e th s lu p s er g in S ’s ry St Ma Church Ringers in St Mary’s Thursday 4 December at 7:30pm Festival Night This concert takes place during the popular Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary’s Church. St Mary’s Singers performed last year and were so popular that they have been asked to return and sing for longer this time. They have some superb soloists and musical director John Savage has promised a varied programme including some well-known carols that the audience can join in with. The Stone Handbell Ringers are performing at the Festival Night for the first time but I think you’ll agree that the sound of bells is synonymous with Christmas so in the setting of Christmas trees, and candles it will be wonderful. Doors open at 7pm for you to come and look at all the trees and vote for your favourite then the concert will begin at 7:30pm. For that festive atmosphere mulled wine and mince pies will be available along with other drinks. Christmas gifts and cards will be on sale. We have a Stafford Calendar on sale with shots of Stafford contributed by local photographers, plus jams, chutneys books etc. 24

Local artist Lisa Henderson has painted a nativity scene based on one of the windows especially for us this year. The Friends of St Mary’s have had a series of concerts this year to raise money to have cushions made for the pews. Well I can tell you that we have been successful and the first phase of cushions will be installed before this concert so can all enjoy more comfort. Tickets are £5 from Mews Music, St Mary’s Mews

t 91 Local War hero dies a Just before the 100th anniversary of War War I and Remembrance Day, a war hero from Rugeley, Staffordshire passed away. David Samuel, who was aged 91, was the last surviving World War II Navy veteran in Staffordshire, to have participated in the North Atlantic Convoys, as well as numerous invasions and landings during the war, between 1939 and 1945. Among other campaigns, Mr. Samuel took part in the Anzio landings, North African Campaign, Crete and Malta Campaigns. He was awarded many honours and medals, including: the Atlantic Star, the Africa Star, the Italy Star and the 1939-1945 Star. He served on HMS the Delhi, among others, and throughout the war, he never returned home until 1946. He was captured by the Nazi’s, and was held as prisoner of war (POW) in1944, but released when the war ended. He was only 17 when he joined the Royal Navy at the start of the war. In 1942, his ship HMS Delhi was badly damaged when its Stern was blown by bombing from Italian Aircraft while in action in the Bay of Algiers, North Africa and many of the crew were killed but David survived. The ship was repaired and continued in action in the Mediterranean, including Operation Shingle which saw the Allied Landings in Anzio, Italy. David, who lived in Rugeley for the past 60 years, and whose parents lived in Armitage, is survived by his only Daughter, Karen Hegazy, who lives in Stafford with her husband.

David Samuel, in his navy uniform in the war years

was extremely proud of being in the Navy. One of his memories included meeting Actress Vivien Leigh when she was visiting the troops as part of the war effort.” Mr. Samuel’s father, David Samuel Sr., fought in the Great War, 1914-1918, and was awarded several medals for his part in the war. The family moved to Armitage after World War I, and lived in the Staffordshire area ever since. The funeral is being organised in conjunction with SSAFA charity in Stafford, and military honours will be presented.

Karen said: ”He never talked much about the war, but every now and then he would mention one of the places he visited as a sailor. He was proud to have been the Captain’s trusted hand on his ship, the Delhi. He had fond memories of the Mediterranean campaign. He

w.littlegem CHRISTMAS WINE ww Got the turkey, Christmas pudding is in the cupboard, vegetables are ordered but what about the wine? The quality, not the quantity, of what you drink over Christmas can make or break the whole day so don’t rush out to the supermarket on Christmas Eve and grab from the nearest shelf, it could ruin everything else. Sit down and think through what you might drink with what from the time the family arrive until you put them all to bed or point them in the right direction for home. There is nothing like a sparkling wine to get a party moving, not only do most people enjoy fizzy wine but it adds to the sense of occasion. If you like Cava or Prosecco then get that but you will find a cremant from France of more general appeal. A good cremant from the Loire tastes like good champagne and is much better than the average champagne at less cost. As the smells from the kitchen encourage people to make for the table have a white wine in the fridge and red wine ready. The white should not be too cold, not less than 6c and most fridges are 5c so let it sit out for a short while. Most red wine is better decanted before drinking and it is worth doing this simple job during the morning. Open your red wine and pour it gently into a glass jug. If the wine is over five years old, and some younger, it may have sediment. This is not a bad thing but you do not want to drink it so be careful to leave it in the bottle when pouring into the jug. Then wash out the bottle and pour the wine back into it. By decanting you will have done two main things. You will have given the wine a chance to slightly oxidise, making most wines a little softer and more rounded, and you have made sure no one drinks sediment. The wine goes back into its own bottle and no one knows what you have done. It is good to have a budget before buying wine. It does not mean 28

you have to keep to it but it does help to narrow the choices you are looking at. Wine merchants and supermarkets have such a big selection most people do not know where to start. A budget helps. If you are having turkey with trimmings then a fairly fruity but dry white will go well. Try a Graves or Bergerac Saussignac, or if the budget allows, a white Burgundy. Avoid New World wines in general unless you have a bigger budget. Most cheaper South American, Australian and South African wines have no character and taste as though they have been made in a wine factory, which they have. Also look for individual growers rather than generic wines such as Bordeaux, Roussillon or

Bergerac. It is worth buying a couple of bottles to try a few weeks before you want to buy any quantity. Finally, for the pudding and afterwards you can go back to your sparkling wine or have a sweet wine from Monbazillac or a Sauternes.

My list for Christmas Day To greet the family and guests Domaine de Cray Cremant from the Loire: £14.25 With the meal Chateau Haut Meyreau ‘Collector’ sauvignon: £14.50 Chateaux du Seigner 2009 Bergerac: £15.90 Pudding Chateau Partarrieu 2011 sauturnes: £23.00 All wines available from www.littlegemswine.co.uk on discount.

Happy Christmas. This month we have teamed up with Little Gems Wine for one lucky winner to win a tasting set box of 6 bottles of fine wines. For your chance to win this fantastic prize please answer the following question:

Which wine is recommended to have with your turkey on Christmas day? Email your answer to info@staffordshireoutlook.co.uk or on a postcard to 30 Swinburne Close, Sutton Heights, Telford, TF7 4PZ with your name, address and telephone number. Entries to arrive by Sunday 14th December 2014. Competition Terms and Conditions: No cash or alternative prize available. Winner will be chosen at random from all correct entries received. Winner to be aged 18 years or over. All entry details will be forwarded to Little Gems Wine.

Remember a loved one, support a hospice “Today I lit a candle for you so that you might shine once more upon this world.” Christmas is a very special and poignant time to remember loved ones we have lost. Through our Light up a Life appeal, Compton Hospice offers a unique opportunity to honour those special to us, by dedicating a light on our celebratory Tree of Life. Throughout the Christmas period, hundreds of lights shine out from our tree which stands pride of place in the grounds of our hospice. Each light is a gift for that someone special, a way of remembering them, as they were, a shining light in our lives. Your gift to those who have meant so much will also be a gift to our patients and their families currently facing the challenge of living with an incurable illness.

Recipe Of The Month Turkey, cranberry and honey roast parsnip sausage roll with pickles and homemade carrot and cardamom jam. I love homemade sausage rolls, basically because I can make them using my ratio of 90% filling and 10% pastry. You can make a ruff puff pastry if you wish (see takefood. co.uk - chef’s recipes - baking essentials) but for ease and time saving purposes use a pre-made ready rolled all butter puff pastry from your local supermarket. These sausage rolls are a great way of using up leftovers from Christmas lunch and taste amazing. Makes 6 individual or 2 large ones. EQUIPMENT FOR BOTH RECIPES • • • • • • • • • • •

Pastry brush Small bowl for egg wash Large mixing bowl Sharp knife Chopping board Baking tray Preserving pan or heavy based pan Grater Large spoon Storage jars Serving board and small bowl for jam

Sausage Rolls INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •

1 roll of ready rolled puff pastry - 350g 454g/1lb of sausage meat A few pickings from the leg of the left over cooked turkey 1 tbsp of cranberry sauce 2 medium sized honey roast parsnips 1 egg 3 sprigs of thyme 1 tsp cracked black pepper A few oats and seeds

METHOD Lay the pastry out on your board and turn the board to portrait then cut into 2 halves left to right so you have 2 pieces top and bottom ready to wash and fill. Put the sausage meat into your bowl and sprinkle the thyme leaves and cracked black pepper, tear your turkey meat into the bowl, chop the parsnips and add to the bowl, add cranberry sauce and mix 32

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

gently - you don’t want to lose the cranberry sauce into the mix. Now egg wash your pastry and take half of the filling and roll out in the centre of the bottom piece then do the same for the top piece of pastry. Fold the pastry over filling, tuck in and egg wash the top, sprinkle with oats and seeds, cut into 4 then bake on 180oC for about 35 - 40 minutes.

Carrot And Cardamom Jam INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

500 grams of carrots, peeled and grated Zest of 2 and juice of 3 unwaxed lemons 1 small sized piece of ginger grated 1 onion fine diced Zest and juice of 1 large orange 1 tablespoon of cardamom seeds, (split open the green pods of the cardamom to find the seeds) • 500g granulated sugar METHOD Grate your carrots and blanch in boiling salted water for 30 seconds, strain and set aside. In a pan on a moderate heat soften the onion and ginger in olive oil and add the cardamom seeds. Now add the citrus zest, juice and sugar. Once the sugar has dissolved turn up the heat and allow to boil for about 6 minutes - keep your eye on it. To store the jam wash some old or new jars in hot soapy water, rinse in hot clean water and now dry in your oven on 100oC to sterelise. Pour in carefully and tighten lids on. As the heat of the jam reduces this helps to create a vacuum. SERVING SUGGESTION Serve your sausage rolls with any pickles that you find in your cupboard, your homemade carrot and cardamom jam, a lump of mature cheddar and a nice winter ruby slaw (see takefood.co.uk for recipe). www.instagram.com/mikewhitehurst_takefood www.takefood.co.uk mike@takefood.co.uk www.facebook.com/takefood! www.twitter.com/takefood

Looking for a Christm With Christmas just around the corner, are you looking for a Christmas gift that’s a little different? Why not treat your family or friends to a beautiful portrait of either their pet or child, with Pet Pics by Lyn Kelly. I have now been painting for 14 years. Many people began commenting on how good my work was, and encouraging me to start selling my work. I have now taken a massive step of turning my hobby into my career, and finally

living my childhood dream with my business, Pet Pics by Lyn. Having always painted pets, a colleague of mine asked if I could paint a portrait of her daughter which I did, and she was so happy, I then decided to add this to my services. I work in all kinds of medium but particularly pastels and acrylic. Pastels give a luminous and velvety feel to a painting, whereas acrylic can be vibrant and bold, but add texture. All I need is your favourite photograph and I can create a beautiful and unique hand painted portrait.

erapy h T e v ti c A h it w in a p k Bac In this article I will discuss back pain which is reported to be the most prevalent musculoskeletal complaint globally and a condition which I treat on a daily basis. Approximately 25% of UK adults will report low back pain annually and 84% will experience low back pain at some point within their lifetime. The socio-economic costs of treating low back pain are estimated to be £10 billion per year in treatment, lost productivity and healthcare benefits. However there is good news! More than 90% of new cases will resolve in 6 weeks or sooner and very few represent serious disorders with only 10% of patients reporting persistent disability. Very few patients require invasive forms of treatment for low back pain such as injections or surgery. Approximately 80% of back pain observed would be described as NONSPECIFIC LOW BACK PAIN (NSLBP). This means there is no clear association between a specific pathology and the presenting symptoms.

2.

So here are 5 tips for managing low back pain: 1.

Understand your condition and the pain you are experiencing – All pain we encounter is an output of the brain and relates to how your brain perceives threat. Your brain will perceive pain as a threat but we can alter the way in which this is interpreted through patient education based upon the best available evidence. Respecting a patient’s preferred option of treatment is an important part of the treatment process. Patients can develop negative perceptions with regard to their back pain and emotions such as fear, stress and anxiety can ‘turn up the volume’ on pain levels. The spinal tissues are robust but at times become pain sensitive. Discs do not ‘crumble’or ‘slip’ and degeneration (commonly

38

cases can recur within 12 months from a pain free status. This is thought to be related to the body altering movement patterns or remaining intolerant of the loads we encounter on a daily basis. Assessment, treatment and exercise prescription from a healthcare professional can reduce this risk and regular exercise such as yoga or pilates can be effective. Don’t assume pain free=fully recovered.

referred to as ‘wear and tear’) is considered normal as we pass through life. Spinal joints don’t ‘slip out’ or ‘lock up’ and your pelvis or sacrum doesn’t ‘rotate’. Having ‘1 leg longer than the other’ isn’t significant in most cases. Most episodes of back pain do not require X-rays or MRI scans.

3.

4.

Remain active – Try to remain as active as possible as research indicates this assists early recovery and return to normal function. You are unlikely to cause damage or harm through gentle activity. Where possible aim to continue going to work. Pain up to 5/10 is acceptable (on a 0-10 score where 10 is highest pain level). Take short rests where required. Treat your pain – Take regular pain relief as required or prescribed by your GP. This will allow you to remain active and ease pain sensitive tissues. Be cautious with use of antiinflammatories as they can have side effects and are known to impair normal healing pathways. Acupuncture can help to reduce back pain in some patients. Cold therapy can provide transient pain relief and heat can ease soft tissue stiffness. Reduce risk of recurrence – Up to 50% of low back pain

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

5.

If required seek help – if your back pain is associated with high fever, unexplained weight loss, soft tissue swelling, unremitting back pain with no clear easing/aggravating pattern, altered sensation in both legs or the genital region, alteration of bowel/ bladder control, high level trauma then seek immediate assessment with your GP.

Splints in h S t: is tr ia d o P e th sk A Shin Splints is a common term for shin pain during exercise. It can be a misleading term and most medical professionals try to avoid using it. This is because shin pain and ‘Shin Splints’ can be due to several different conditions. One of the most common shin conditions that is frequently labelled ‘Shin Splints’ is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome. Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome has been reported to occur frequently in military recruits, distance runners, dancers, football (soccer) players and gymnasts. Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome has been classified into two distinct types, which affect specific tissues on the inside of the shin:

Type One This is characterised by a stress reaction on the inside border of the shin bone. A stress reaction is a preceding stage to a stress fracture.

Type Two This is characterised by irritation of the outer surface (periosteum) of the inside of the shin bone at the point where the Soleus and Tibialis Posterior muscles attach. Regardless of the type, Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is largely caused by

over-use, with those who run or walk regularly on hard or uneven surfaces being particularly affected. However, there are a number of factors, such as altered foot, knee and hip posture, which can make a person susceptible to the syndrome.

Shin Splints Treatment People suffering from Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome will feel pain on the inner border of the shin (medial Tibial border) during and following exercise. Most patients respond well to nonoperative treatment. This involves rest, strengthening and stretching exercises, followed by a gradual return to exercise after symptoms subside. In order to help prevent recurrence of the condition, a biomechanical analysis (an analysis of posture at rest and during walking and running) with a chiropodist/podiatrist can be very useful. This will pick up any factors that may be making a person susceptible to Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, so that they can be corrected before a return to activity. Muscle imbalance and leg length inequality are frequent causes of mal-alignment that can be picked up during an assessment. A common cause of Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is pes planus (flat feet) or

pronated foot position (a lowered arch). These would be identified during biomechanical analysis. Over pronation is the uncontrolled lowering of the arch of the foot during motion. This puts increased strain on the Tibialis Posterior muscle which pulls on the inside of the shin and can produce pain. Arch supporting Orthotics/insoles can be very effective in remedying this problem. Chiropodists/Podiatrists are often the first professionals to diagnose gout due to frequent patient contact.

orward F e c a F st e B r u o y g in Putt

Why striving to look and feel your best is nothing new.

a good disposition is a virtue in itself, and it is lasting; the burden of the years cannot depress it, and love that is founded on it endures to the end.

We are treated to airbrushed pictures of celebrities in a myriad of different publications on a daily basis. Many other areas of the media condemn the ‘modern obsession’ with looks.

The Greek Philosopher Plato was a little more abrupt when he was less than complimentary in referring to the transience of beauty:

But is it anything new? Had Facebook and Twitter, OK and HELLO magazines existed in Greek and Roman times what would they have said and promoted? A brief trip back in time reveals that many social commentators expressed similar opinions to those being voiced today.

“Evil is the vulgar lover who loves the body rather than the soul, inasmuch as he is not even stable, because he loves a thing which is in itself unstable, and therefore when the bloom of youth which he was desiring is over, he takes wing and flies away, in spite of all his words” and promises; whereas the love of the noble disposition is life-long, for it becomes one with the everlasting.”

The Roman Poet Ovid wrote in ‘The Art of Beauty’: Thus then let every woman strive to look her best. It matters not how love shall spread its lure. Tasteful simplicity no one can find fault with. There are women who, though buried in the country, are yet most careful about their hair. Even if rugged Athos should hide them from view, they would dress well-for Athos. They even take a pleasure in dressing to please themselves and every young girl loves to make the most of her attractions. Later when looking at the ageing process he wrote: Your first preoccupation, my dears, should be your manners. When a woman’s manners are good, she never fails to attract. Manners indeed are more than half the battle. Time will lay waste your beauty, and your pretty face will be lined with wrinkles. The day will come when you will be sorry you looked at yourself in the mirror, and regret for your vanished beauty will bring you still more wrinkles. But 44

This balanced view of ‘Beauty’ is evident in most societies throughout history. The huge technological and scientific advances that have been made over recent years help us (female and male) preserve our looks. Wrinkles can be reduced; the ravages of time and the ‘dirty’ modern world that we inhabit can be mitigated to a high degree. We spend huge amounts of money at gyms to make our bodies fit and healthy then cover them up for most of the year. Our faces are permanently on display; surely we should devote a little more time and effort to make them fit and healthy too? The Chase CACI Clinic has invested in the very latest equipment to help our clients take care of their faces: The CACI machine offers a range of different options from a jowl lift to a luxurious full face treatment

ic The Kate McGeary Holist I am very excited to be able to offer Reflexology treatments to my clients. Take some time to de-stress before the Festive Season begins. Christmas is a joyous time of year, but it can also be incredibly busy and stressful. Treating yourself, or a loved one, to a Reflexology treatment is a wonderful opportunity to relax and escape from the extra pressures this season can bring. What is Reflexology? Reflexology is a holistic, complementary therapy that has been around for thousands of years. The theory is that the whole body may benefit from the treatment because each individual section of the human body can be ‘mapped’ onto the feet. So, as the feet are massaged and gentle pressure is applied systematically to specific areas of the feet, each individual part of the body may be said to be ‘treated’.

A Reflexologist cannot claim to diagnose or cure a health condition, but a series of treatments can help clients to manage stress more effectively. Clients often experience a very tangible sense of wellbeing following a treatment. What should I expect from a Reflexology treatment? At your first session you will be asked to complete a client consultation form which will help me to understand your needs more thoroughly and to identify whether there is any reason why Reflexology wouldn’t be right for you at the present moment. As I will only be working on your feet and ankles, you don’t need to remove lots of clothes – just your shoes and socks or tights.

The treatment time lasts about 45 minutes, but you are usually with me for about an hour. What is the treatment room like? All treatments are provided in my beautiful purpose built therapy room based in Wimblebury, Cannock. The treatment room offers clients a calm and private space within which they can relax knowing they won’t be disturbed or rushed. To book an appointment or to find out more about Reflexology treatments, please call 07540 724701 or email: katemcgearyskincare@gmail.com

“In my opinion, Reflexology is THE most relaxing form of complementary therapy. Kate’s treatments are gorgeous and I especially love the hot mitts she uses at the beginning, they immediately relax you and let you know you are in for a very special treatment!” Alison, Wolverhampton

es Centre u q ti n A ill M ld O e h T t si 100,000 reasons to vi By Liz Roseblade

Last weekend I dragged my husband, Tom, shopping and we went to Bridgnorth where we discovered The Old Mill Antiques Centre in Low Town, by the river Severn. Here, we whiled away a very pleasant 3 hours or so and I can certainly say that the heading to this article probably understates the vast amount of choice of items on sale in this building! Even my husband found plenty to interest him whilst I was admiring the best array of

jewellery I have seen anywhere. I was in seventh heaven surrounded by diamonds, sapphires, rubies, pearls and some really eye-catching fashion jewellery – and the value for money was amazing! This is where I will be buying my Christmas presents. But this was only the beginning; The Old Mill is on four floors, all absolutely packed with everything imaginable. On the third floor we found a little art gallery with quality oil paintings, watercolours and a selection of prints (both framed and unframed) - I bought a pair of framed prints which I’m sure my sister will love! On this floor there is a mixture of antique and modern style furniture, table lamps, tiffany lamps, mirrors, photograph frames, and crystal glassware – the list is endless. “The Old Mill Sofa Company” occupies a section on this floor and here you can design your own sofa, settee or armchair and choose from either modern or traditional fabrics. And just when we felt we were losing our bearings in this vast building we discovered a truly unusual and inviting award winning tea rooms, just in time for a nice cup of tea and a snack and time to contemplate all we had

48

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

just seen. On leaving the tea rooms we stopped to look at a section with handmade baby clothes, lace table linen, bedspreads, cushions and many other items all beautifully displayed. Back on the ground floor which is truly a “treasure trove” we found hallmarked silver items, china, porcelain including some beautiful royal worcester and coalport hand painted vases, books, collectables of all types and many most unusual items! After a very enjoyable 3 hours or so, we strolled back to the car which was 20 yards away (as the Old Mill has their own free car park). We had spent a most relaxing afternoon shopping – completely hassle free! This Christmas I know where I am buying my Christmas presents, even Tom said: “Why can’t we always do our shopping this way”?

Since then our laser practitioners have removed or faded many thousands of black and multi-coloured tattoos utilising three purpose made, single task lasers, designed, built and maintained to the highest ‘medical grade’ standards. Our Our other Medical Aesthetic Treatments Include… treatments include: • Acne & acne scarring • Anti-ageing • Birth marks • Botox • Chloasma • Dermal fillers • Electrolysis • Laser hair removal • Hyperhidrosis • Tattoo removal • Medical peels • Melasma • Microdermabrasion • Non-surgical face lifts • Pain relief • Photo-rejuvenation • Pigmentation • Pigmented lesions/Liver spots /Sun spots/Age spots • Port wine stains • Rosacea • Scarring • Skin rejuvenation • Skin tags • Smoking cessation • Sports injury • Stretch marks • Sun damage • Telangiectasia • Thread vein removal • Verruca removal • Wart removal • Wrinkle reduction injections

Q-Switched Ruby Laser, (one of only eight in the UK, two of which are in hospitals and used for research) uses the highest power output currently available worldwide, providing the most effective removal. A Q-Switched Nd-yag laser and a Q-Switched KTP laser are also available.

Highly experienced laser practitioners and nurses bring many years of combined expertise to bear, therefore providing the quickest most efficient tattoo removal. Additionally the Surgery is at the forefront of developing and introducing supplementary treatments to aid this process. The recent influx of cheap, far-east lasers, mean that some individuals now offer ‘low cost’ treatments. Inevitably the lasers used are underpowered and remove little or no ink at each sitting. The very best of them produce poor results and many recurring treatments are needed to have any significant effect. Two further factors relating to laser technology should be considered. Firstly, most of the inferior lasers claim to be Q-Switched, but in fact use a cheaper electronic version of Q-Switching, and can be as much as 10 to 20 times less powerful. Secondly, within the last couple of years, it has been discovered that these weaker lasers, by not having the required power to shatter the tattoo ink, instead can melt it, unfortunately changing the

nature of the ink, & making it unshatterable by ANY laser. Beware. Compare these to the type of lasers used at The Cottage Surgery and you will realise that overall, these ‘cheaper treatments’ will eventually cost much more. Add to this, increased travel costs as well as time wasted and you will realise ‘cheap tattoo removal’ is not a realistic option and those individuals that offer it, are being less than honest regarding their success. Ask us about THE LASERASE PROMISE, it can make the difference! Beware also of other non-laser tattoo removal methods being offered, often on the internet. Some will definitely not work, others can do you real long term harm. We are happy to provide independent, confidential information. Whilst confidently offering superior outcomes for Laser Tattoo Removal, The Cottage Surgery believe in providing these at competitive rates in a confidential and caring environment. If you want safe, successful and cost effective treatment, there simply is no one else in the region to provide a better service. To arrange a confidential, friendly consultation that is totally free and without obligation, or to receive a Patient Guide, fully explaining the process, please contact us on 01384 940498 or visit www.cottage-surgery.co.uk

Principles of saving

Do not be Over-Loyal No savings provider can offer the best savings account at all times! In reality, providers only offer savings accounts with good rates of interest when they are in need of capital. They will then maintain that rate of interest, until the offer expires. At expiry, the rate of interest is then reduced as quickly as possible. Staying with any single provider therefore costs the saver money!

It is important to understand your immediate 12 month financial requirements, first and foremost, and to place this amount of money in the best instant access account. This account could then be linked to your current account to satisfy your instant access requirements. Any additional savings could be spread over longer term accounts to achieve better rates of interest.

Protect Your Capital

Review the Whole of Market

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme is a protection scheme of last resort. It provides a level of security on the first £85,000 saved with each individually protected savings provider. This means that having an account in joint name offers £170,000 of FSCS protection, or if one person has £170,000 saved with 2 different account providers (each with their own licence), the same applies.

You can only ever be sure of identifying the best rates of interest if you review the offering of every suitable account provider.

Terms and Conditions apply! It is therefore important to obtain professional advice and to consider this when choosing your savings account provider(s).

Make a Financial Decision Every Year All introductory savings account offers have specific offers over specific timescales, currently ranging from 1 month to 7 years (at the time of writing). Most Instant Access and Notice Accounts maintain the introductory rate of interest for 12 months (remember that these are still variable rate accounts). Beyond this, Fixed Term Accounts offer fixed rates of interest for longer periods of time and should therefore be considered for larger amounts held on deposit.

Have a Plan Having a ‘plan’ provides the structure to choose the most suitable accounts and to manage them most effectively.

With over 100 account providers available, offering the protection of the UK FSCS, there are many to review. Some of these are overseas national banks, which some people may deem unsuitable. These include banks such as; Bank of Cyprus, National Bank of Greece, First National Bank (Nigeria), etc. We have defined the most suitable savings account market, for our clients, to include any savings provider with a commercial or retail trading presence within the UK. We do not consider accounts offered by overseas national banks to fall into our suitability category. We will therefore review all of these providers every time you require a savings solution, to ensure we identify the best accounts for you within our selection of circa 75 providers!

Be Pro-Active You will only maximise your savings returns by being pro-active. Take the control and initiative to identify and implement the best savings accounts that are available. However, we understand how difficult this is, which is why we are now here to help.

Why Should I Make A

Will?

After all, everyone knows that when a spouse dies, everything passes to the surviving spouse!

If you fit into any of these categories, you should make a Will.

Not necessarily! The law does not actually say that.

• Do you have a wife, husband, Civil Partner or partner?

If you do not have a Will, your estate will be distributed in accordance with a set of laws written in the 1920s, The Laws of Intestacy. If you do not make your own decisions your estate may well pass to people who you would not wish to receive the bequest. It is quite possible that your loved ones could receive nothing.

• Have you been divorced?

• Do you own property? • Do you have other financial assets?

• Do you have children? Minor children? • Do you wish to give gifts to Charities, Friends, distant family members? Make your own decisions, it is that simple. Talk to Goodwills Legal Services for advice.

There is one small job that you have been meaning to do for years…

ellbeing Local Success and W Local Success and Wellbeing Expert Kate Young has launched a new company in a bid to help women reach their full potential in their work and home lives.

“For instance, I recently worked with a client who had just come out of a long term relationship and felt very lost, hurt, confused and lonely. I helped her find her independence again, get her zest for life back and feel confident about her future.”

Despite representing 51% of the population, a BBC study has found that women occupy less than a third of the UK’s most influential jobs. Kate said “Of course, the reasons for this are complex and varied, although I have found that many people are held back by limited self-belief and self-esteem. I have set up Kate Young Coaching to help women overcome such limitations.”

Life coaching is a rapidly growing industry in the UK; popular with politicians, business leaders and celebrities alike. It empowers people to make, meet and exceed personal and professional goals.

Kate is professionally qualified and has 10 years coaching experience. She now offers life coaching programmes specifically designed for women to help them make improvements in all areas of their lives. She says: “This isn’t just about professional goals. I help people manage stress, sleep better, make life decisions, improve their health and overcome crippling fears to name but a few.”

Kate said “I am really excited about the launch of Kate Young Coaching. This is the perfect time for women to ditch the guilt, self-doubt and negative thinking. It’s time to thrive!”

dependent in e e fr a r e d si n o c I Should my child? f o t n e m ss e ss a sh li g En

Knowing where your child is exactly at school is so important. It is so important to be proactive and know where your child is so that, if there are any weaknesses, you can help them to target them and improve before it is too late.

Kind Regards Mr Laurence Dalton BA in English Literature, PGCE

Independently assessing you child can give a fresh insight into exactly what needs to be done to improve and provide clarity for all involved. With an honest, transparent and thorough assessment you can then put a workable and appropriate plan of action into place where you can all work towards your intended goal. This is why I am offering a free independent assessment to any parent who wants to know for sure where their child stands grade wise. The assessment will come in the form of a very detailed report, after I have marked the test, suggesting bespoke areas that your child needs to target on so that they can improve. It could be that your child is aiming to get an A* and you want to check that they are on track. It could be that a grade C is of absolute paramount importance for that all important place at college. It could be that your child is just starting their GCSE journey and you want to see the position they are in. I would be an absolute pleasure to offer this assessment to give you peace of mind and so that you know exactly where you stand as a family. My experience as a current grammar school teacher, GCSE exam marker and Head of English will, I am sure, offer you the comfort that the guidance that you receive will be fair, correct and, most importantly, honest.

at Webbs s ie g lo o n ch te n o si vi le New te Two new television technologies are completely changing TV for the better – right now. As you’d probably expect Samsung are at the forefront of both with some amazing new products. Curved TV is now possible and its led to some gorgeous designs; these new Samsung curved LED televisions really do look as good switched off as they do with your favourite show on. But it’s far from being all about stunning good looks. There are performance advantages to the new curved screens. The first advantage is a vastly improved sense of depth and realism thanks to Samsungs Auto Depth Enhancer which makes you feel as if you’re actually there. It analyses different parts of the screen and applies contrast enhancements to each to provide a superior sense of depth. Secondly the curved screen naturally produces a wider field of view and more natural viewing angles.

56

These important benefits allow you to see clear detail even in the corners of the screen. No matter where you sit, you’ll enjoy the best possible viewing experience. The third benefit is improved contrast levels for a clearer picture. On a curved screen, unlike a flat one, light naturally travels towards the viewer, so no matter what angle you sit at to watch, you’ll see a crisp detailed picture. A great delivery and installation service is important too, we’ll even go out to our customers home to advise on the best screen size and where to site the new TV. We deliver promptly and install to a professional standard whether on the wall or on furniture. The second major leap in television technology is all about picture quality. It is of course 4K Ultra High Definition. With astonishingly high detail levels the picture is so life like and realistic it’s amazing. Samsung UHD televisions deliver 3840x2160 pixel resolution levels. The picture shows up to four times the level of detail of even the best high definition sets currently available.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

Mark says “If you’re looking to replace your TV, you want something better than you’ve already got, or else why change? 4K UHD is much, much better and it means you can sit closer to a bigger screen without any problems. We’re seeing lots of customers trading up to Ultra High Definition, but also to bigger screen sizes. With ultra slim frameless designs people can get them in without dominating their living rooms and they’re delighted with the quality”. Coupled with the fact that Samsung have now started a Christmas promotion push with fantastic savings such as: • reward schemes where you can claim up to £300.00 cash back on selected models • package savings involving soundbars • 5 year warranty on selected tvs Now really is the best time to invest in a state of the art tv. So if you are in the market for a new TV you really should check out the all new Samsung curved Ultra High Definition range. All you need then is a top quality retailer – so visit Webbs.

Carver Wolverhampton Marathon Sponsors, charity recipients and the planning committee of Carver Wolverhampton Marathon Events met for a debrief after another successful event on September 7th. Chair Mary Harding thanked all the sponsors and committee members who have supported the events and helped to make them successful again. Mary gave a special thank you to the Public Health Department at Wolverhampton Council. They kindly agreed to pay for the hire of West Park and it is hoped that stronger links will be formed between the Marathon Events and Public Health Department. the park whilst the marathon and other events are taking place and Mary hopes that more people, especially families will come and take a stroll. With Carvers, Cousins Furniture and NJB Sports & Physio already committed to their sponsorship for 2015, plans are already underway and next year the events will take place on Sunday 6th September. The cheque presentation taking place on December 1st will see the charities receive their share of the proceeds raised. The charities are Compton Hospice, West Park Stroke Cycle Group, Broadmeadow Special School and the Mayoral Charities. It is hoped that the amount raised will at least equal last year’s figure. The hunt is underway for charities for 2015 so if anyone knows of a local charity who would like to apply please write to Mary Harding C/O Carvers Building Supplies, Littles Lane, Wolverhampton WV1 1JY. Use headed paper and tell us a bit about the charity you wish to nominate. The committee will meet early January to make their decision. The wait is nearly ov The wait is nearly over: the Nissan Juke NISMO RS is set to storm into showrooms across Europe in December and priced from £21,650 OTR. The arrival of the new RS model marks the start of a second exciting chapter in the history of the Juke NISMO and further expands Nissan’s growing NISMO road car line-up. First previewed at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the Juke NISMO RS has undergone a thorough NISMO development programme, and follows hot in the wheel-tracks of the flagship Nissan GT-R NISMO. Confirming Nissan’s reputation for delivering excitement and motorsport-developed technologies to the broadest possible audience, the new Juke NISMO RS features a host of enhancements over the standard NISMO model. With more performance, a sharper chassis setup, more powerful brakes and extra equipment, the new RS is an even more extreme and focussed version of Nissan’s acclaimed compact crossover. Like every NISMO model, the RS is infused with motorsportinspired design, aerodynamics and maverick engineering to deliver thrilling performance and handling in a road car. “With Nissan Juke NISMO already accounting for a growing number of all Juke sales in Europe, the enthusiasts’ desire for more performance is clearly there. The new NISMO RS version offers just that and cements NISMO’s reputation as creators of digital age performance,” said Guillaume Cartier, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Nissan in Europe. Benefiting from NISMO’s extensive global motorsport experience, the NISMO RS’s advanced 1.6-litre DIG-T engine has been reworked to boost power to 218PS (160kW) from 200PS (147kW) while torque in two-wheel drive/manual transmission versions is increased from an already impressive 250Nm to 280Nm. To ensure the chassis can successfully transfer the extra torque to the road, 2WD models also benefit from the addition of a mechanical Limited Slip 60

Differential (LSD) on the driven front wheels. Four-wheel drive models feature Nissan’s advanced Torque Vectoring System as standard, along with Nissan’s Xtronic transmission and 250Nm of torque. Xtronic transmission models also feature standard-fit steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts to control the eight-speed manual mode. The NISMO RS’s performance gains are matched by a sportier soundtrack courtesy of a retuned exhaust system with a large diameter silencer. Other improvements linked to the increased engine performance include strategic body strengthening to increase torsional stiffness still further, and a braking system that has been enhanced for even better resistance to fade under repeated hard use. Front disc size has increased from 296mm to 320mm, while the rear discs are now ventilated. Revised spring and damper settings complete the chassis changes. The Juke NISMO RS is set apart with red brake callipers and discreet ‘RS’ badging on the front and rear. Inside, the RS logo appears in the rev counter while a distinctive suede wrap covers the instrument binnacle. The final finishing touch inside is an eye-catching water print finish on the shift knob/paddle shifters and the central cluster. Options on the RS version include special Recaro sports “bucket” seats and the Safety Pack that includes the

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

following: Xenon headlamps, Nissan’s Around View Monitor and Safety Shield, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning and Moving Object Detection giving visual and audible warnings to avoid potential collisions. The new Juke NISMO RS is available in a choice of three exterior colours - Storm White, Pearl Black and Blade Silver - with a single bespoke interior treatment. The NISMO RS’s aerodynamicallyoptimised exterior has lower front and rear bumpers, wider wings and sill side skirts, plus a dark chrome V-motion grille - complete with Nissan’s new brand signature - and tailgate spoiler to better control airflow. Developed using experience gained on the racetrack, the aerodynamic upgrades reduce front and rear lift without increasing drag. NISMO exterior design cues include red door mirror caps and a red pinstripe that encircles the bottom of the car. The picture is completed with new LED daytime running lights set within the lower air intake grilles at the front of the car, while eye-catching 18-inch alloy wheels accentuate the new Juke’s bold stance.

becomes UK’s er d n a tl u O i h is b su it M -in hybrid most successful plug Figures released by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) confirm the new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is now the country’s best selling plug-in hybrid vehicle. Lance Bradley, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said: “The new Outlander PHEV has quickly established its credentials. We have reached a defining moment in vehicle drivetrain technology which challenges conventional wisdom. Few would have predicted that a family-sized 4 x 4 sports utility vehicle could become the UK’s best-selling plug-in hybrid based on economy, on and off road performance and practicality”. The Outlander PHEV uses both electric and petrol power. Unlike non plug-in hybrid vehicles, the Outlander PHEV can travel substantially further on battery power – 32.5 miles - more than enough to accommodate most daily average journey distances. As such it rarely needs to visit a petrol pump. The impressive electric range gives the vehicle significant environmental credentials. It emits just 44g/km of CO2 and the official combined fuel consumption figure is 148mpg. The vehicle is exempt from road tax, London

62

Congestion Charge and qualifies for the Government’s £5,000 Plug-in Car Grant. For company car drivers Outlander PHEV attracts just 5% taxable benefit in kind, saving £8,216 over three years compared to a similar size 4x4 SUV. The sales success of The Outlander PHEV is having a positive effect on other Mitsubishi models. The company’s passenger car sales are up 164% in August and 36% year to date. The award winning Mitsubishi L200 is the best-selling pick-up range in August. The Mitsubishi ASX (active sports cross-over) and Mitsubishi Shogun are both out performing YTD.

Mitsubishi plug-in Outlander wins judges’ award for innovation at Towcar of the Year 2015 The Caravan Club, formed in 1907 and now representing over 375,000 members, has honoured Mitsubishi Motors with its ‘Award for Innovation’ for the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). The award was made at The Caravan Club’s Towcar of the Year presentation at the Royal Automobile Club, London. Stewart Mckee, Mitsubishi Motor’s General Manager for Press, Public Affairs and Events received the award

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

from Nick Lomas, Director General of the Caravan Club. Stewart said: ‘We are very grateful to the Caravan Club for recognising the plug-in Outlander with its special award for innovation.’ The annual Towcar of the Year Competition tells members which is the best towcar to buy in 2015. The judging is carried out by caravan journalists, national motoring journalists and Caravan Club members at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire and attracted 39 entries this year. Vehicles are evaluated using the same criteria; acceleration, braking, reversing, ergonomics, hill-starting, visibility, traction and the suitability of the gear box. The Outlander PHEV is a fullsized family 4x4 SUV. It uses both electric and petrol power to propel itself. Unlike many other traditional hybrid vehicles, the Outlander PHEV can travel a long way without using any petrol, 32.5 miles in fact. Such an impressive electric range gives the vehicle phenomenal environmental credentials. It emits just 44g/km of CO2 and the official combined fuel consumption figure is 148mpg.

Fuel your desires by Rob

I’m doing 76 on the motorway, but I’m not speeding. The dashboard display is showing mpg, not mph. Yes, you read that correctly: 76 mpg. And it’s still climbing. I know what you’re thinking: I must be taking part in some geeky RAC fuel consumption study; hypermiling in a fashion to cause tailbacks longer than those inflicted by an asthmatic pit-pony pulling a gypsy cart, or maybe that I’m some state-sponsored boffin on a simulator in a laboratory in Brussels, responsible for producing vehicles’ ‘official fuel consumption figures.’ But I’m not, honestly. I’m driving in the real world, as I normally do, in the latest Renault Clio. And I’m getting numbers which are tantamount to a motorist’s wet dream. Coming at a time when drivers are more suspicious than ever of manufacturers’ claimed fuel consumption figures, this particular version of Renault’s fourth generation Clio is just what’s needed to restore confidence in what have become spurious statistics at best. At the heart of the matter is a 1.5 litre diesel engine which manages to do a lot more than just achieve its attentiongrabbing promise of 78.5 mpg on the combined cycle. The little 90 bhp four cylinder can more than pull its own weight, being as it is both refined and tractable at low revs, so it never requires a great deal of effort to keep pace with traffic. Which is, of course, great for driving down costs. And if you want to go one better, there’s even the option of deploying the ECO button - which is standard on this Dynamique S MediaNav iteration - to

make savings of a further 12%. Plus, you won’t have to pay road tax due to admirably low emissions of 90g/km. But if you really have a burning hatred for fuelling stations and want to turn the knobs all the way up to 11, spec the ECO pack, which fits low-rolling resistance tyres and boosts savings up to a titanic class-leading 88.3 mpg. And I for one believe such numbers. Yet not everything is for purposes of pleasing parsimonious Papa, so what about Nicole? Never before has a Clio looked this good; its sleek, sexy lines embody the very style and verve which has made the French marque famous. A set of the most stunning 16” alloy wheels I’ve ever seen maintain the effect, as does the optional Flame Red metallic paint. And it’s loaded with high-tech systems - like Renault’s brilliantly intelligible R-Link multimedia system with Bluetooth and USB function - to keep you entertained while you’re looking good. Refusing to allow five door practicality to corrupt its design purity, the little Renault confuses many car-savvy passengers with its disguised rear-door handles; just as it boggles their minds when they experience a comfortable and refined ride atypical of most cars in this class - especially when considering the as-tested model costs only £17,625. Similarly, the Clio is chock-full of creatures comforts, unlike most of its competitors: satellite navigation, cruise-control, air-conditioning, auto-windscreen wipers and parking sensors all feature. All of which complement a driving experience which is in itself thoroughly rewarding; the steering is direct; the visibility, good; the handling, composed. Oh, and the fuel economy. Did I mention the fuel economy? 01952 321334 | WWW.STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK.CO.UK
