Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not

just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock

and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

t 91 Local War hero dies a Just before the 100th anniversary of War War I and Remembrance Day, a war hero from Rugeley, Staffordshire passed away. David Samuel, who was aged 91, was the last surviving World War II Navy veteran in Staffordshire, to have participated in the North Atlantic Convoys, as well as numerous invasions and landings during the war, between 1939 and 1945. Among other campaigns, Mr. Samuel took part in the Anzio landings, North African Campaign, Crete and Malta Campaigns. He was awarded many honours and medals, including: the Atlantic Star, the Africa Star, the Italy Star and the 1939-1945 Star. He served on HMS the Delhi, among others, and throughout the war, he never returned home until 1946. He was captured by the Nazi’s, and was held as prisoner of war (POW) in1944, but released when the war ended. He was only 17 when he joined the Royal Navy at the start of the war. In 1942, his ship HMS Delhi was badly damaged when its Stern was blown by bombing from Italian Aircraft while in action in the Bay of Algiers, North Africa and many of the crew were killed but David survived. The ship was repaired and continued in action in the Mediterranean, including Operation Shingle which saw the Allied Landings in Anzio, Italy. David, who lived in Rugeley for the past 60 years, and whose parents lived in Armitage, is survived by his only Daughter, Karen Hegazy, who lives in Stafford with her husband.

One of his memories included meeting Actress Vivien Leigh when she was visiting the troops as part of the war effort.” Mr. Samuel’s father, David Samuel Sr., fought in the Great War, 1914-1918, and was awarded several medals for his part in the war. The family moved to Armitage after World War I, and lived in the Staffordshire area ever since. The funeral is being organised in conjunction with SSAFA charity in Stafford, and military honours will be presented.

Karen said: ”He never talked much about the war, but every now and then he would mention one of the places he visited as a sailor. He was proud to have been the Captain’s trusted hand on his ship, the Delhi. He had fond memories of the Mediterranean campaign. He

se of life a le ew n a en iv g e b ld u Vocational centre co A purpose-built vocational centre in Burntwood could be given a new lease of life after proposals have been put forward to transfer it to a local schools partnership. The Pathways Partnership, made up of Two Rivers High School, Chase Terrace Technology College, Hednesford Valley High School and Saxon Hill School, is looking to take on the running of the Lichfield and Burntwood Vocational Centre in Spring 2015. The news comes after the county council sought to secure a viable future for the centre after numbers using the centre reduced. Subject to the transfer, and dependent on funding from the Staffordshire County Council and central government, the centre could provide vocational learning for students 16 and over with special educational needs (SEN). This means young people with SEN will be able to develop valuable practical skills, with a view to increasing their independence and gaining employment in a skilled profession.

These proposals have been given the green light by the county council, but are still subject to the completion of further work on the proposal and tests of its viability. County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills said: “This is positive news for the Lichfield and Burntwood Vocational Centre. Obviously, this is just a proposal at this stage, but I am confident that the partnership will be able to develop a full proposal that benefits young people with SEN in Lichfield, Burntwood and the surrounding areas. This could also mean the individual schools themselves can create additional space to cater for the increased number of SEN students progressing to secondary school in the coming years. “As a county-and indeed nationally-we should be matching young people’s aspirations with their skills and giving them the best chance to secure the job that they want in an ever competitive market. If the proposal by the Pathway Partnership is sound, it means we will be giving more young people with special education needs access to skills and training they need to gain employment in their chosen sector.”

With Carvers, Cousins Furniture and NJB Sports & Physio already committed to their sponsorship for 2015, plans are already underway and next year the events will take place on Sunday 6th September. The cheque presentation taking place on December 1st will see the charities receive their share of the proceeds raised. The charities are Compton Hospice, West Park Stroke Cycle Group, Broadmeadow Special School and the Mayoral Charities. It is hoped that the amount raised will at least equal last year’s figure. The hunt is underway for charities for 2015 so if anyone knows of a local charity who would like to apply please write to Mary Harding C/O Carvers Building Supplies, Littles Lane, Wolverhampton WV1 1JY. Animal Healthcare S Hawkes Green Veterinary Centre has now been opened for year and a half! Within this short space of time we have gained some wonderful clients and due to business growing so much, we are now proceeding with opening our very own operating theatre. We have an extremely dedicated team here at Hawks Green, firstly consisting of our head veterinary surgeon Katherine Carder. She graduated from Bristol in 2009 and with an extensive background in working in the veterinary profession, we feel that she is the best candidate for the job. Sarah Jones RVN is our Head Veterinary Nurse, she graduated in 2009 from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London. Sharon Baggott, another one of our nurses, has recently joined the team. She’s been nursing for 23 years and we feel that she fits our team well.

Here at Hawkes Green we strive to provide our clients the best possible care. In doing so we’ve come up with what we call the Animal Healthcare Scheme. The Animal Health Care Scheme is an ideal way to provide your beloved pets with all their preventative treatment in one easy monthly direct debit. It’s easy, hassle-free and our dedicated nurses will guide you through the whole process. Ideal for new puppies and kittens, the scheme provides their primary vaccination course (consisting of two injections which is normally £25.90). However, it is also ideal for older pets as the scheme includes all yearly boosters, their microchip (Which is an illegal requirement for dogs come 2016), 10% off neutering, 10% off dentals, free nurses clinics and all their monthly flea and worming treatment.

Degrees e re h T e h T r fo ts e ck ti Win tre, 12th February 2015

ales Thea at Cannock Prince Of W The Three Degrees – UK Tour 2015, celebrating 50 years in the business! Featured in the Guinness World Records as the longest-running female vocal group in history, The Three Degrees are pleased to announce their first extensive UK headline tour in four years, with twenty dates across the country, preforming at Prince of Wales Theatre, Cannock on Thursday 12th February. Celebrating an incredible 50 years in the business, the threesome has retained all three of their major qualities; their beauty, their sparkling choreography, and their precise vocal harmonies. Consisting of original members Helen Scott and Valerie Holiday along with Freddie Pool, The Three Degrees has become one of the most internationally popular and long lasting Soul groups in history. Formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1963, The Three Degrees were brought together by veteran writer and producer, Richard Barrett, who produced the band’s first hit Gee Baby, for Philly-based record label, Swan Records. With various changes in band personnel, Barrett began the process of molding the trio into a regional favourite, training them extensively and booking them at record shops and talent contests throughout the US. In 1970, they signed with the New York-based Roulette Records and had a top 5 hit with the remake of The Chantels song Maybe, with Valerie Holiday on lead vocals and her unforgettable rap. During this time, the trio made a cameo appearance in the movie The French Connection, portraying themselves, in a cabaret scene. In 1972, in a major career move, the trio signed with Gamble and Huff’s acclaimed label Philadelphia International Records. They made an immediate splash with the disco hit Dirty Ol’ Man before joining with MFSB (the Philadelphia International house band) to record the Soul Train theme tune, TSOP, which became a No.1 hit. The following year, they would record their signature song, the sophisticated ballad, one of the greatest songs ever to come from Philadelphia, and the group’s biggest international hit. 36

Releasing one album on Epic Records in 1976, two years later, they teamed up with Giorgio Moroder (of Donna Summer fame), on Ariola Records and a new string of hits helped the threesome to make some of their biggest strides with hits such as Giving Up, Giving In, The Runner, My Simple Heart, and the ballad Woman In Love. The trio were bigger than ever in the UK. Prince Charles would later proclaim The Three Degrees his favourite group and they were fondly labelled by the British Press as “Charlie’s Angels.” The trio was asked to perform for many charity events hosted by several members of The Royal Family and in 1978 they were asked to perform at the 30th birthday celebration for Prince Charles, at Buckingham Palace. In 1981, they were invited guests at the wedding reception of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. Ever since, The Three Degrees have constantly toured all over the world, occasionally recording but always

working. “For us, it is still exciting and we still enjoy our work,” says Holiday. “We are blessed with a wide age group appeal… from fifteen to sixty-five.” Scott goes on to add, “We have opened a lot of doors for other entertainers. In some cases, we may not have always succeeded but we have never given up. It still amazes me when we see teenagers singing along with our songs. And yet we still have the fans who have grown with us.” The influence and popularity of The Three Degrees has played an important role in bringing Soul music to the world and they continue to be considered around the globe as one of the most important ambassadors of American Soul Music, more than five decades after its birth and they show no signs of slowing down. For more information and a full schedule of the tour dates please visit www.thethreedegrees.com

Why not try our… Mini chicken and broccoli pies 7 ProPoints per serving, ProPoints value of 31 per recipe, 344 calories per serving, 10 minutes to prepare, 50 minutes to cook, Serves 4 Chicken thigh contains only
55 more calories per 100g (raw weight) than breast meat but it has much more flavour — it’s absolutely delicious in stews, bakes and pies. • Low fat cooking spray • 400g (14oz) skinless, boneless chicken thigh, cut into large chunks • 250g (9oz) shallots, halved if large
 • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
 • 2 tbsp chopped fresh thyme • 300ml (1/2 pint) light chicken stock • 125g(41/2oz) broccoli florets, cut into bite sized chunks
 • 2 tbsp cornflour mixed with 4 tbsp water • 150g (51/2oz) half fat crème fraîche • 100g (31/2oz) filo pastry 1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 6/ 200°C/180°C fan oven. Heat a large, nonstick frying pan, mist with low fat cooking spray and cook the chicken over a medium heat for 10 minutes or so, turning occasionally, until it’s well browned. Remove from the pan and set to one side. 2. Add the shallots to the same pan and cook for 5 minutes or until golden, adding a splash of water if it looks as if it might stick. Add the garlic and thyme and cook for a further 2 minutes. 3. Add the stock and broccoli and return the chicken to the pan. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in the cornflour paste and simmer for about a minute until thickened. Stir in the crème fraîche and season to taste.
 4. Spoon the pie filling into 4 x 200ml ovenproof dishes. Cut each of the
filo sheets into quarters. Scrunch
the pieces and use to top the pies. Mist with low fat spray, season and bake for 20 minutes or until golden and bubbling. Serve immediately with steamed vegetables. 38

Fancy some gravy? For an extra ProPoints value of 1 each, make up some gravy using 2 tsp lamb gravy granules per person. • 12 ProPoints per serving • 950g (2lb 2oz) leg or half leg of lamb on the bone, trimmed of all visible fat • 1 garlic clove, sliced thinly • 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly
 • 2 tbsp chopped fresh mint • 1 tsp Dijon mustard • 900g (2lb) new potatoes, halved if large 480g • (1lb 1oz) frozen peas 1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 5/190oC/fan 170oC. Return it to the oven for the remainder of the cooking time, then allow it to stand for 15 minutes before carving. 3. Meanwhile, cook the new potatoes until tender and steam the peas. Thinly slice the lamb and serve with the vegetables.

Winter Wonderland

nkincense and Myrrh ra F ith w e tim e kl ar It’s glitter and sp New Year is just around corner and what better reason do us girls need to unleash the glitter and get sparkling into a Winter Wonderland? The festive time paves the way for opulent glamour, a great time to dig out those smokey eye shadow pallets, the dazzling eyeliners and glistening nail polishes. To prepare for the big night out for your New Year celebrations, start early in the day with your preparation, follow our 3 step process for that perfect party look. STEP ONE Wash and cleanse your face and neck area thoroughly and generously apply Avena Brightening moisturising cream. This light moisturising cream has pearl elements within its formula and acts as an amazing illuminating base preparing and hydrating your skin for the forthcoming make up application. (£6.83) www. strellaskincare-fragrance.com) For legs and body exfoliate and apply Nourish Golden Glow Toning Body Shimmer (£25) which is infused with golden resins of Frankincense and Myrrh perfect for this time of year… a light glowing shimmer which takes the edge of winter skin

tones and leaves your skin soft and glowing.(nourishskinrange.com) STEP TWO Once you have applied your foundation its time to start to enhance the eye areas and lips. We love Peek a bright eyes by Benefit (£25.50) for illuminating the whole area. Keep eyes smokey with Burberry Complete eye shadow Palette Gold no. 25 (£40.00) or Clarins Ombre Matte Sparkle Grey and additionally work in a light dusting of glitter high on the cheek bones and brow bones for major impact. Shimmer blocks available by all main stream make up brands are perfect as a finishing touch to the main cheek area, brush also lightly across the forehead, tip of your nose and chin. STEP THREE There is such a vast array of lipsticks on the market from the sublime to the ridiculous in price, in every shade of the rainbow but the important element for New Year time isn’t the cost it’s the shimmer factor, that pout factor for under the mistletoe. Chose tones of red and apply neatly within your lip line and then smouther in a succulent gloss. We love Clarins colour quench lip Balms (£17) for that glossy yet not sticky finish. Finally we move on to nails and what a fabulous place to wrap up the sparkle. Nails should be bold and make your statement. They can be fun, they can be detailed but overall make sure they sparkle! We simply adore the winter wonderland collection by Ciaté which combine colour, loads of glitter and these polishes are scented – yes you read correctly these polishes have the scents of gingerbread through to New Year Trees…. Deborah Lippmann Fantastical nail collection also has perfect fun glittery tones for parties. Try Marrakesh Express ( £16) available from www. lookfantastic.com. Treat your nails too! We also LOVE Barry M who have a magnificent cost effective range of polishes available in all high streets. Think bold and GLITTER! Now the next step is for you to have a wonderful party and have a brilliant New Year!

erapy h T e v ti c A h it w in a p k Bac In this article I will discuss back pain which is reported to be the most prevalent musculoskeletal complaint globally and a condition which I treat on a daily basis. Approximately 25% of UK adults will report low back pain annually and 84% will experience low back pain at some point within their lifetime. The socio-economic costs of treating low back pain are estimated to be £10 billion per year in treatment, lost productivity and healthcare benefits. However there is good news! More than 90% of new cases will resolve in 6 weeks or sooner and very few represent serious disorders with only 10% of patients reporting persistent disability. Very few patients require invasive forms of treatment for low back pain such as injections or surgery. Approximately 80% of back pain observed would be described as NONSPECIFIC LOW BACK PAIN (NSLBP). This means there is no clear association between a specific pathology and the presenting symptoms.

2.

So here are 5 tips for managing low back pain: 1.

Understand your condition and the pain you are experiencing – All pain we encounter is an output of the brain and relates to how your brain perceives threat. Your brain will perceive pain as a threat but we can alter the way in which this is interpreted through patient education based upon the best available evidence. Respecting a patient’s preferred option of treatment is an important part of the treatment process. Patients can develop negative perceptions with regard to their back pain and emotions such as fear, stress and anxiety can ‘turn up the volume’ on pain levels. The spinal tissues are robust but at times become pain sensitive. Discs do not ‘crumble’or ‘slip’ and degeneration (commonly

42

cases can recur within 12 months from a pain free status. This is thought to be related to the body altering movement patterns or remaining intolerant of the loads we encounter on a daily basis. Assessment, treatment and exercise prescription from a healthcare professional can reduce this risk and regular exercise such as yoga or pilates can be effective. Don’t assume pain free=fully recovered.

referred to as ‘wear and tear’) is considered normal as we pass through life. Spinal joints don’t ‘slip out’ or ‘lock up’ and your pelvis or sacrum doesn’t ‘rotate’. Having ‘1 leg longer than the other’ isn’t significant in most cases. Most episodes of back pain do not require X-rays or MRI scans.

3.

4.

Remain active – Try to remain as active as possible as research indicates this assists early recovery and return to normal function. You are unlikely to cause damage or harm through gentle activity. Where possible aim to continue going to work. Pain up to 5/10 is acceptable (on a 0-10 score where 10 is highest pain level). Take short rests where required. Treat your pain – Take regular pain relief as required or prescribed by your GP. This will allow you to remain active and ease pain sensitive tissues. Be cautious with use of antiinflammatories as they can have side effects and are known to impair normal healing pathways. Acupuncture can help to reduce back pain in some patients. Cold therapy can provide transient pain relief and heat can ease soft tissue stiffness. Reduce risk of recurrence – Up to 50% of low back pain

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

5.

If required seek help – if your back pain is associated with high fever, unexplained weight loss, soft tissue swelling, unremitting back pain with no clear easing/aggravating pattern, altered sensation in both legs or the genital region, alteration of bowel/ bladder control, high level trauma then seek immediate assessment with your GP.

Splints in h S t: is tr ia d o P e th sk A Shin Splints is a common term for shin pain during exercise. It can be a misleading term and most medical professionals try to avoid using it. This is because shin pain and ‘Shin Splints’ can be due to several different conditions. One of the most common shin conditions that is frequently labelled ‘Shin Splints’ is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome. Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome has been reported to occur frequently in military recruits, distance runners, dancers, football (soccer) players and gymnasts. Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome has been classified into two distinct types, which affect specific tissues on the inside of the shin:

type one This is characterised by a stress reaction on the inside border of the shin bone. A stress reaction is a preceding stage to a stress fracture.

type two This is characterised by irritation of the outer surface (periosteum) of the inside of the shin bone at the point where the Soleus and Tibialis Posterior muscles attach. Regardless of the type, Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is largely caused by

over-use, with those who run or walk regularly on hard or uneven surfaces being particularly affected. However, there are a number of factors, such as altered foot, knee and hip posture, which can make a person susceptible to the syndrome.

Shin Splints treatment People suffering from Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome will feel pain on the inner border of the shin (medial Tibial border) during and following exercise. Most patients respond well to nonoperative treatment. This involves rest, strengthening and stretching exercises, followed by a gradual return to exercise after symptoms subside. In order to help prevent recurrence of the condition, a biomechanical analysis (an analysis of posture at rest and during walking and running) with a chiropodist/podiatrist can be very useful. This will pick up any factors that may be making a person susceptible to Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, so that they can be corrected before a return to activity. Muscle imbalance and leg length inequality are frequent causes of mal-alignment that can be picked up during an assessment. A common cause of Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is pes planus (flat feet) or

pronated foot position (a lowered arch). These would be identified during biomechanical analysis. Over pronation is the uncontrolled lowering of the arch of the foot during motion. This puts increased strain on the Tibialis Posterior muscle which pulls on the inside of the shin and can produce pain. Arch supporting Orthotics/insoles can be very effective in remedying this problem. Chiropodists/Podiatrists are often the first professionals to diagnose gout due to frequent patient contact.

ioxin N – k in M a L n lo a S to New WHY NIOXIN? SIMPLY PUT, BECAUSE MORE THAN 70% OF USERS NOTICE THICKER, DENSER-LOOKING HAIR IN JUST 4 WEEKS. The No1 stylist-recommended thinning-hair brand in the US, NIOXIN’s customised range of hair and scalp products is proven to deliver noticeably thicker, denser-looking hair. THERE IS NO SINGLE CAUSE OF THINNING HAIR; THERE ARE MANY Thinning hair affects men and women of all ages. The cause is often genetic, and can also be triggered by certain life stages. Hair cells reproduce at a faster rate than any other in our bodies, so they are also sensitive to changes in our health or environment. Addressing thinning begins with understanding what causes and contributes to it, and the early warning signs to look out for. DISCOVER THE SIX REASONS YOU MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING THINNING HAIR:

GENETICS A common family predisposition involves natural, age-related hormonal changes that can trigger hair loss. This is caused by the conversion of testosterone into the toxin Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and can be inherited from either your mother or your father.

HEALTH ISSUES Several underlying health issues can cause hair thinning, including a malfunctioning of the hormoneproducing thyroid gland and the natural hormonal changes women experience after pregnancy and during the menopause.

MEDICATION The hair follicle is incredibly sensitive to changes in the body. Any hormone therapy (including birth control) can contribute to hair thinning, as can steroids, specific chemotherapies, and medication for blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and acne. NIOXIN IN-SALON SERVICES AVAILABLE AT SALON LA MINK Hair without a healthy scalp is like a tree without firm roots – insecure, susceptible to breakage and unable to take in the nutrients it needs to grow properly. Research shows that a regular program of scalp maintenance is an important step towards attaining your full hair potential. Inspired by advanced skincare, each Therapy combines Nioxin’s 3 Step Cleanse, Optimise and Treat approach with a Rebalancing Massage to stimulate and nourish the scalp – helping you attain your full hair potential.

NUTRITION AND DIET What you eat can play a significant role in hair thinning. A high consumption of animal fats, rapid weight loss and liquid protein diets can result in a lack of amino acids, biotin, iron, protein and zinc all of which are essential for healthy-looking hair.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Air and water pollutants, chlorine, metals and minerals may be left on the scalp and hair as we wash with water every day, contributing to thinning. Pollutants such as pseudo-estrogens and toxins from within our bodies are also a factor.

STRESS AND TRAUMA Stress can produce increased levels of testosterone, which converts to DHTand interrupts the hair’s growth cycle. Stress also constricts blood supply through the capillaries, restricting oxygen and nutrient uptake and vitamins to the hair follicle. 44

Dieters turn to 'fat freezing' to lose Christmas love handles Thousands of people in the Midlands are freezing their fat off after Christmas, rather than burning it off at the gym, after signing up for a new treatment at UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton that uses extreme cold to blast away love handles, muffin tops and spare tyres. The procedure, which can be done during a lunch hour, is proving particularly popular with men and women who do not want surgery or liposuction. Those seeking a pre-emptive strike against the festive bulge are hooked up to a machine that uses vacuum pressure and deep cooling to target fat below the skin, freezing unwanted fat cells in the waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms and back. Patients can answer emails and telephone calls, read a book or watch a film while having the Cryolipolysis LipoFreeze treatment. It is used for small areas of fat Before

that refuse to budge with diet and exercise alone and is done without anaesthetic or medication. Because the procedure is totally non-invasive, clients can return to normal activities directly after treatments. According to Hanna McCormac at UltraSlim Clinics, it is best for those who are moderately overweight and removes up to 40 per cent of fat in the targeted area, with the results showing gradually over a period of weeks after the procedure.

At UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton, which has so far performed 100’s of the procedure throughout December and the New Year, Hanna McCormac, says: "I had my love handles done myself. The fat dies, the skin tightens, it's incredibly easy and it only takes about an hour. The beauty is, it's permanent. If you eat a lot you'll gain weight in other places, so you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but the fat that we freeze doesn't come back."

Why striving to look and feel your best is nothing new.

a good disposition is a virtue in itself, and it is lasting; the burden of the years cannot depress it, and love that is founded on it endures to the end.

We are treated to airbrushed pictures of celebrities in a myriad of different publications on a daily basis. Many other areas of the media condemn the ‘modern obsession’ with looks.

The Greek Philosopher Plato was a little more abrupt when he was less than complimentary in referring to the transience of beauty:

But is it anything new? Had Facebook and Twitter, OK and HELLO magazines existed in Greek and Roman times what would they have said and promoted? A brief trip back in time reveals that many social commentators expressed similar opinions to those being voiced today.

“Evil is the vulgar lover who loves the body rather than the soul, inasmuch as he is not even stable, because he loves a thing which is in itself unstable, and therefore when the bloom of youth which he was desiring is over, he takes wing and flies away, in spite of all his words” and promises; whereas the love of the noble disposition is life-long, for it becomes one with the everlasting.”

The Roman Poet Ovid wrote in ‘The Art of Beauty’: Thus then let every woman strive to look her best. It matters not how love shall spread its lure. Tasteful simplicity no one can find fault with. There are women who, though buried in the country, are yet most careful about their hair. Even if rugged Athos should hide them from view, they would dress well-for Athos. They even take a pleasure in dressing to please themselves and every young girl loves to make the most of her attractions. Later when looking at the ageing process he wrote: Your first preoccupation, my dears, should be your manners. When a woman’s manners are good, she never fails to attract. Manners indeed are more than half the battle. Time will lay waste your beauty, and your pretty face will be lined with wrinkles. The day will come when you will be sorry you looked at yourself in the mirror, and regret for your vanished beauty will bring you still more wrinkles. But 50

This balanced view of ‘Beauty’ is evident in most societies throughout history. The huge technological and scientific advances that have been made over recent years help us (female and male) preserve our looks. Wrinkles can be reduced; the ravages of time and the ‘dirty’ modern world that we inhabit can be mitigated to a high degree. We spend huge amounts of money at gyms to make our bodies fit and healthy then cover them up for most of the year. Our faces are permanently on display; surely we should devote a little more time and effort to make them fit and healthy too? Whether complete removal is required, or just sufficient fading to allow for new tattoo art to be placed on top of old, all leading plastic surgeons and dermatologists regard Laser Tattoo Removal as the most superior and safest method currently available. Opened in 1992, The Cottage Surgery is the third longest established tattoo removal clinic in the UK. Since then our laser practitioners have removed or faded many thousands of black and multi-coloured tattoos utilising three purpose made, single task lasers, designed, built and maintained to the highest ‘medical grade’ standards. Our Our other Medical Aesthetic Treatments Include… treatments include: • Acne & acne scarring • Anti-ageing • Birth marks • Botox • Chloasma • Dermal fillers • Electrolysis • Laser hair removal • Hyperhidrosis • Tattoo removal • Medical peels • Melasma • Microdermabrasion • Non-surgical face lifts • Pain relief • Photo-rejuvenation • Pigmentation • Pigmented lesions/Liver spots /Sun spots/Age spots • Port wine stains • Rosacea • Scarring • Skin rejuvenation • Skin tags • Smoking cessation • Sports injury • Stretch marks • Sun damage • Telangiectasia • Thread vein removal • Verruca removal • Wart removal • Wrinkle reduction injections

Q-Switched Ruby Laser, (one of only eight in the UK, two of which are in hospitals and used for research) uses the highest power output currently available worldwide, providing the most effective removal. A Q-Switched Nd-yag laser and a Q-Switched KTP laser are also available.

Highly experienced laser practitioners and nurses bring many years of combined expertise to bear, therefore providing the quickest most efficient tattoo removal. Additionally the Surgery is at the forefront of developing and introducing supplementary treatments to aid this process. The recent influx of cheap, far-east lasers, mean that some individuals now offer ‘low cost’ treatments. Inevitably the lasers used are underpowered and remove little or no ink at each sitting. The very best of them produce poor results and many recurring treatments are needed to have any significant effect. Two further factors relating to laser technology should be considered. Firstly, most of the inferior lasers claim to be Q-Switched, but in fact use a cheaper electronic version of Q-Switching, and can be as much as 10 to 20 times less powerful. Secondly, within the last couple of years, it has been discovered that these weaker lasers, by not having the required power to shatter the tattoo ink, instead can melt it, unfortunately changing the

nature of the ink, & making it unshatterable by ANY laser. Beware. Compare these to the type of lasers used at The Cottage Surgery and you will realise that overall, these ‘cheaper treatments’ will eventually cost much more. Add to this, increased travel costs as well as time wasted and you will realise ‘cheap tattoo removal’ is not a realistic option and those individuals that offer it, are being less than honest regarding their success. Ask us about THE LASERASE PROMISE, it can make the difference! Beware also of other non-laser tattoo removal methods being offered, often on the internet. Some will definitely not work, others can do you real long term harm. We are happy to provide independent, confidential information. Whilst confidently offering superior outcomes for Laser Tattoo Removal, The Cottage Surgery believe in providing these at competitive rates in a confidential and caring environment. If you want safe, successful and cost effective treatment, there simply is no one else in the region to provide a better service. Principles of saving

Do not be Over-Loyal No savings provider can offer the best savings account at all times! In reality, providers only offer savings accounts with good rates of interest when they are in need of capital. They will then maintain that rate of interest, until the offer expires. At expiry, the rate of interest is then reduced as quickly as possible. Staying with any single provider therefore costs the saver money!

It is important to understand your immediate 12 month financial requirements, first and foremost, and to place this amount of money in the best instant access account. This account could then be linked to your current account to satisfy your instant access requirements. Any additional savings could be spread over longer term accounts to achieve better rates of interest.

Protect Your Capital

Review the Whole of Market

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme is a protection scheme of last resort. It provides a level of security on the first £85,000 saved with each individually protected savings provider. This means that having an account in joint name offers £170,000 of FSCS protection, or if one person has £170,000 saved with 2 different account providers (each with their own licence), the same applies.

You can only ever be sure of identifying the best rates of interest if you review the offering of every suitable account provider.

Terms and Conditions apply! It is therefore important to obtain professional advice and to consider this when choosing your savings account provider(s).

Make a Financial Decision Every Year All introductory savings account offers have specific offers over specific timescales, currently ranging from 1 month to 7 years (at the time of writing). Most Instant Access and Notice Accounts maintain the introductory rate of interest for 12 months (remember that these are still variable rate accounts). Beyond this, Fixed Term Accounts offer fixed rates of interest for longer periods of time and should therefore be considered for larger amounts held on deposit.

Have a Plan Having a ‘plan’ provides the structure to choose the most suitable accounts and to manage them most effectively.

With over 100 account providers available, offering the protection of the UK FSCS, there are many to review. Some of these are overseas national banks, which some people may deem unsuitable. These include banks such as; Bank of Cyprus, National Bank of Greece, First National Bank (Nigeria), etc. We have defined the most suitable savings account market, for our clients, to include any savings provider with a commercial or retail trading presence within the UK. We do not consider accounts offered by overseas national banks to fall into our suitability category. We will therefore review all of these providers every time you require a savings solution, to ensure we identify the best accounts for you within our selection of circa 75 providers!

Be Pro-Active You will only maximise your savings returns by being pro-active. Take the control and initiative to identify and implement the best savings accounts that are available. However, we understand how difficult this is, which is why we are now here to help.

Why Should I Make A

Will?

After all, everyone knows that when a spouse dies, everything passes to the surviving spouse!

If you fit into any of these categories, you should make a Will.

Not necessarily! The law does not actually say that.

• Do you have a wife, husband, Civil Partner or partner?

If you do not have a Will, your estate will be distributed in accordance with a set of laws written in the 1920s, The Laws of Intestacy. If you do not make your own decisions your estate may well pass to people who you would not wish to receive the bequest. It is quite possible that your loved ones could receive nothing.

• Have you been divorced?

• Do you own property? • Do you have other financial assets?

• Do you have children? Minor children? • Do you wish to give gifts to Charities, Friends, distant family members? Make your own decisions, it is that simple. Talk to Goodwills Legal Services for advice.

There is one small job that you have been meaning to do for years…

Kate Young Coaching Local Success and Wellbeing Expert Kate Young has launched a new company in a bid to help women reach their full potential in their work and home lives. Despite representing 51% of the population, a BBC study has found that women occupy less than a third of the UK’s most influential jobs. Kate said “Of course, the reasons for this are complex and varied, although I have found that many people are held back by limited self-belief and self-esteem. I have set up Kate Young Coaching to help women overcome such limitations.”

Kate is professionally qualified and has 10 years coaching experience. She now offers life coaching programmes specifically designed for women to help them make improvements in all areas of their lives. She says: “This isn’t just about professional goals. I help people manage stress, sleep better, make life decisions, improve their health and overcome crippling fears to name but a few.” “For instance, I recently worked with a client who had just come out of a long term relationship and felt very lost, hurt, confused and lonely. I helped her find her independence again, get her zest for life back and feel confident about her future.” Life coaching is a rapidly growing industry in the UK; popular with politicians, business leaders and

celebrities alike. It empowers people to make, meet and exceed personal and professional goals. Kate said “I am really excited about the launch of Kate Young Coaching. This is the perfect time for women to ditch the guilt, self-doubt and negative thinking. It’s time to thrive!”

Kate Young Bio Kate is a Success and Wellbeing coach and owner of Kate Young Coaching. She specialises in helping busy professional women feel more confident, happy and energised. She gives her clients quality time to refocus on what they want from life and she works with them every step of the way to achieve it. She shows clients how to ditch their inner critic, negative thinking and self-doubt so they can be free to live a life they truly love and deserve. She has experience of helping people overcome a range of issues such as unhealthy habits, low confidence, fears and phobias, fatigue, and anxiety. Kate offers coaching packages and support both online and offline to suit an individual’s personal needs. Kate also specialises in prenatal support and runs a one day Hypnobirthing class to help expectant parents feel calm and confident about childbirth. It has been shown that hypnobirth techniques can reduce labour pain, labour time, and also the chances of intervention. Knowing where your child is exactly at school is so important. It is so important to be proactive and know where your child is so that, if there are any weaknesses, you can help them to target them and improve before it is too late.

Kind Regards Mr Laurence Dalton BA in English Literature, PGCE

Independently assessing you child can give a fresh insight into exactly what needs to be done to improve and provide clarity for all involved. With an honest, transparent and thorough assessment you can then put a workable and appropriate plan of action into place where you can all work towards your intended goal. This is why I am offering a free independent assessment to any parent who wants to know for sure where their child stands grade wise. The assessment will come in the form of a very detailed report, after I have marked the test, suggesting bespoke areas that your child needs to target on so that they can improve. It could be that your child is aiming to get an A* and you want to check that they are on track. It could be that a grade C is of absolute paramount importance for that all important place at college. It could be that your child is just starting their GCSE journey and you want to see the position they are in. I would be an absolute pleasure to offer this assessment to give you peace of mind and so that you know exactly where you stand as a family. My experience as a current grammar school teacher, GCSE exam marker and Head of English will, I am sure, offer you the comfort that the guidance that you receive will be fair, correct and, most importantly, honest.

at Webbs s ie g lo o n ch te n o si vi le New te Two new television technologies are completely changing TV for the better – right now. As you’d probably expect Samsung are at the forefront of both with some amazing new products. Curved TV is now possible and its led to some gorgeous designs; these new Samsung curved LED televisions really do look as good switched off as they do with your favourite show on. But it’s far from being all about stunning good looks. There are performance advantages to the new curved screens. The first advantage is a vastly improved sense of depth and realism thanks to Samsungs Auto Depth Enhancer which makes you feel as if you’re actually there. It analyses different parts of the screen and applies contrast enhancements to each to provide a superior sense of depth.

58

Secondly the curved screen naturally produces a wider field of view and more natural viewing angles. These important benefits allow you to see clear detail even in the corners of the screen. No matter where you sit, you’ll enjoy the best possible viewing experience. The third benefit is improved contrast levels for a clearer picture. On a curved screen, unlike a flat one, light naturally travels towards the viewer, so no matter what angle you sit at to watch, you’ll see a crisp detailed picture. A great delivery and installation service is important too, we’ll even go out to our customers home to advise on the best screen size and where to site the new TV. We deliver promptly and install to a professional standard whether on the wall or on furniture. The second major leap in television technology is all about picture quality. It is of course 4K Ultra High Definition. With astonishingly high detail levels the picture is so life like and realistic it’s amazing.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

Samsung UHD televisions deliver 3840x2160 pixel resolution levels. The picture shows up to four times the level of detail of even the best high definition sets currently available. Mark says “If you’re looking to replace your TV, you want something better than you’ve already got, or else why change? 4K UHD is much, much better and it means you can sit closer to a bigger screen without any problems. We’re seeing lots of customers trading up to Ultra High Definition, but also to bigger screen sizes. With ultra slim frameless designs people can get them in without dominating their living rooms and they’re delighted with the quality”. Now really is the best time to invest in a state of the art tv. So if you are in the market for a new TV you really should check out the all new Samsung curved Ultra High Definition range. All you need then is a top quality retailer – so visit Webbs.

nd

e High Grou Taking th By Rob Taylor They say pride comes before a fall.

ethos behind the GT86 sportscar or not, this latest version is a pleasure to helm from its towering driving position.

Al Gore was fined when the inconvenient truth that he’d been speeding in his Toyota Prius emerged. Colonel Pierpoint installed the very first roundabout in this country so that he could safely navigate the crossing-point to his club in St James’s, London. Soon after, while glancing around to admire his creation, he was knocked down by a taxi cab.

Although far from being sporty, the RAV4’s 2 litre D-4D diesel powerplant happily pulls its weight about town and on longer motorway cruises, where it has a generous surfeit of 310 Nm of torque on hand. This version - the two-wheel drive Active RAV4 - controls its large body mass very well when things get twisty and it steers with precision, always coping admirably in normal conditions without four wheel drive. Although 4x4 is an option for other range variants.

Like the Oxford city centre cyclist who, unlit at 11pm, meanders into traffic and in front of my wheel with nothing more than a cloak of self-righteousness for protection, these people are just inviting trouble. However, woe-inducing though it may be, I understand their smugness and sense of superiority now that I’m driving the latest Toyota RAV4, because I think I’ve happened upon one of the best SUVs on the market. I’ll now explain why, with as little self-satisfaction as possible, so as to forestall the wrath of the universe. Every since the original in 1994 every previous RAV4 has been built to last for millennia, but only recently has it started to make drivers - as well as owners and occupants - happy on their way into infinity. Whether it’s overspill from the

62

But whichever version you choose you’ll still enjoy supreme cabin comforts. A well-suspended ride that insulates driver and family from everyday tarmac tragedies is chief among them. The sensible front-drive set-up keeps fuel costs down - the official number is 57.6 mpg; I achieved 51.8 mpg and Co2 emissions low: 127 g/km. Furthermore the slick manual gearbox on this model is a helpful and willing partner that never detracts from the journey and the ergonomically-savvy cabin bestows all of today’s modern tech - air-conditioning, Bluetooth etc - without impacting upon aesthetics.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

Another area which is a marked improvement over the previous incarnation is the vehicle’s overall size. Or more specifically how its considerable heft is noticeable only inside and not outside. Subtle exterior design tricks no doubt in part account for this, but what’s harder to fathom is the way I’m able to easily thread this substantial SUV through Oxford’s labyrinthine cobbled streets, fearing only the arrival of a kamikaze cyclist. There’s room for all the family and half of your next door neighbours’ too. All of whom will enjoy ample head and rear legroom and supportive seating. Fido will be happy as well, because boot space is officially measured at 547 litres, which is code for “absolutely massive.” And there’s a easy-to-load entry and egress aspect to the boot, which will help you earn extra cash on the side if you choose to let the RAV4 become part of Pickfords house removal fleet. I used to think parking in the RAV4 was a cinch too, until I pulled a nonchalant parallel manoeuvre and scuffed a virgin 17” alloy wheel. Oh well. We all knew something bad was going to happen. I’m just grateful that no cyclists were harmed in the making of this article.

Call of the Wild Rob Taylor takes a trip into the urban jungle in the latest Fiat Panda 4x4 Road Test Writing 101: playfully and permissively play upon puns to engage and excite both reviewer and reader alike. I know the cliché all too well - it’s the kind of linguistic mechanism which brings a Eureka moment initially at the point of creation, then an enormous collective groan when re-reading. And you know where this is going, because the Fiat Panda 4x4 is just asking for it and I’m in no mood to resist, so here goes: The Fiat Panda 4x4 is a rare and endangered animal - a genuinely capable off-roader which has, ever since it emerged from a jungle clearing some thirty odd years ago, lived a solitary life in its very own market niche of pintsized paw-by-paws [You’re fired if you go any further - Ed]. Well, that’s pretty black and white then, so I’ll get to the matter in hand. And it’s green. Not “bamboo green” of course, but Tuscany Green; and it’s a refreshingly dainty but durable proposition, which is just what’s needed to inject a little

fun onto - and off, as the case may be - Britain’s dull, grey roads. Packing a gutsy 75 bhp 1.3 litre diesel power plant, the Panda 4x4 feels nippy about town; its direct steering and pinpoint gearbox combine to provide a rewarding experience which is nuanced enough to make you befriend this adorable stalwart of the Fiat family. 190 Nm of torque at low revs make performance more than adequate at speed and so the Panda is a competent cruiser, producing little wind noise and tyre roar on its way to a faintly endearing top speed of 99 mph.

watchword when choosing a Panda, because it has far more than just a cute face and winning smile going for it, there’s a host of sensible stuff too: Fiat’s favourite friend costs from £15,145 (as-tested £17,010); does 60.1 mpg on the combined cycle; emits just 125 g/km; comes with Bluetooth, USB, stop/start and air conditioning as standard; but more importantly it’s a pleasure to drive, park and live with, owing to its infectious ‘can-do’ approach to every motoring malady.

It also has a fine onboard ride which is never jarring and supple enough to win compliments from even the most car-insensitive passengers. Leg and head room is another boon which the Panda’s microscopic footprint belies - it really does feel spacious inside. Quite how Fiat has managed this, I don’t know. It certainly is not achieved by illusory gimmicks, like adding a massive sunroof.

It looks great too, with no-nonsense styling, raised suspension, big black bumpers and funky, smoked 15” ‘Off-road’ alloys. And this is not just lip-service to off-roading capability: the Panda has proven itself happy to bloody the noses of bigger (offroad) playground bullies, being as it is a proper off-roader with fourwheel drive, a rear differential and protective underfloor steel plates.

The cabin itself is a comfortable place in which to spend time. The seats are nourishing and - thanks to the £250 Winter Pack fitted to this version - heated in front; the plastics are nice to touch; the switchgear and ergonomics organised with intelligence. Intelligence is the

If you want all of the tough addenda but not the talent to go with it, you can opt for the £1,500 cheaper Panda Trekking. Personally I’d keep it exactly as it is, because I love it. It’s my new favourite animal.
