u! me tailored around yo m ra og pr ry ve co Re An enhanced Recovery Plus is Nuffield Health’s flagship recovery programme and embodies Nuffield Health’s complete end-to-end approach to healthcare. It is an optional enhanced recovery programme available free of charge to all of our private patients when appropriate. Recovery Plus starts after a patient has completed their post-operative physiotherapy and enables them to continue their recovery at one of our local Fitness & Wellbeing Centres at no additional cost. How Recovery Plus works Before undergoing surgery (see list of procedures below) you will be required to attend for a pre-assessment. At your pre-assessment you will be advised of Recovery Plus and your interest to join the programme will be registered. On discharge from your post-operative physiotherapy, if you are suitable and agree to go ahead with Recovery Plus, you will be referred to a recovery coach (a wellbeing Personal Trainer or Health Mentor) at one of our local Fitness & Wellbeing Centres where you will be given nutritional advice and undergo a comprehensive health assessment, including lifestyle and attitude to exercising. You will be given an individually tailored exercise plan in line with your Consultants and Physiotherapists advice. Included in the programme will be 4 expert sessions with a recovery coach, who is a trained exercise professional, to progress your exercises and discuss any queries you may have. At the end of your 3 month programme/membership, you will be given your second Health MOT to measure your progress. At the end of your Recovery Plus programme you will then be given the option of joining the Fitness and Wellbeing Centre for a 12 month membership, which is payable.

Human Rights Day Each year on Human Rights Day, December 10th, the Soroptimist International President launches her President’s Appeal, inviting Soroptimists worldwide to join efforts to support an initiative she feels is of the utmost importance to women and girls. International President Ann Garvie’s Appeal, “See Solar, Cook Solar” will raise money for projects that educate women about renewable energy, while empowering and enabling opportunities for them by providing solar lanterns and cookers. It has become a tradition at SI Cannock & District for members to support this appeal by making donations in lieu of sending Christmas cards to other club members and this year was no exception. At the December meeting, when members were entertained b club member Shirley Brown and were visited by Father Christmas, a sum of £145 was donated and has been sent to the appeal which has continued from December 2013 as it is proving so successful and of such enormous benefit to women and girls: girls can now study after sunset, women and children do not have to spend a large part of each day gathering firewood, meaning that they can take part in education in order to sustain themselves and their families.

Soroptimist Shirley Brown is joined by Father Christmas to entertain SI Cannock & District members

Cannock Soroptimists would like to wish everyone a peaceful and healthy New Year. More information can be found on the website: www.sigbi.org/cannockand-district, by emailing si.cannock@outlook. com or by phoning 07971 494510

orting p p su b lu C s n io L k c o n Can ulance the Midlands Air Amb

The Midlands Air Ambulance (MAA) is a Charitably Funded Service for which many people within the county of Staffordshire have reason to be grateful. Staffordshire includes many large rural areas, including Cannock Chase and The Roaches, to name but two. We have large farming and equestrian communities plus a busy motorway system which runs through the county. All of these have been well served by the MAA and we need them to continue helping us for years to come. I have no doubt you will have seen the Air Ambulance flying over the County and you probably know of somebody whose life has been saved by the rapid intervention of the MAA, especially in the more inaccessible areas of the county. You may even have reason to be indebted to them yourselves.

Operating from strategically located regional airbases, 90 per cent of the region is within reach within eight minutes. If a patient reaches hospital within the Golden Hour (60 minutes after their injury) their chances of survival are dramatically increased. That is why the rapid response of the Midlands Air Ambulance is so vital in an emergency situation. Cannock Lions are an active group of people from Cannock and surrounding district who have united to raise funds and provide assistance for those in our area who need help and support. Over the last few years we have provided equipment and support for young and old alike plus assisting in service projects. One of the organisations that we have chosen to support in 2015 is the Midlands Air Ambulance Later in the year we are holding an ‘Auction Evening’ at The Moat House in Acton Trussell ST17 0RJ on Thursday 23rd of April - St Georges Day. This is one of the premier hotels in the area with an outstanding reputation for quality.

The Midlands Air Ambulance has the largest operating region in the UK. Since 1991, the charity’s three aircraft have responded to more than 42,000 missions averaging 2,000 per year, making it one of the longest established and busiest air ambulance organisations in the UK. Each Midlands Air Ambulance mission costs £2,500 and in excess of £6.5 million is needed each year to keep its fleet operational, which is donated entirely by the public and local businesses. The charity’s three aircraft each carry a crew comprising pilot, two paramedics or flight doctors plus full life-support medical equipment. 14

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015

The evening will have a strong patriotic ‘St Georges’ theme with red and white everywhere! All proceeds from the auction will be donated to The Midland Air Ambulance. Tickets are £50 per head to include some ‘bubbly’ during the reception during which time you will be able to view items in the Silent Auction. There will follow a superb three course meal and then the live Auction. There will also be raffle tickets on sale throughout the evening with the draw being made at the end of the night. We would like to make an appeal for Main Auction lots – the sort of thing that ‘money can’t buy’; experiences, holidays, collectible items or the like. We are also holding a ‘silent auction’ and raffle for which we would be grateful of donations. We already have some excellent items for the auction but can always find room for more. If we find ourselves in the fortunate position of having more than we need for the evening we will make sure that everything is used to raise funds for the MAA If you have anything you would like to donate to this very worthwhile charity or would like to book your tickets please feel free to contact us. We do hope you and your friends would like to join us on this very special evening. To book or contact us email: cannocklionsclub@hotmail.com or ring 0845 8334967/07708 662652.

culties fi if d l a c si y h p d n a g Adults with learnin taffordshire University teach students at S Three ladies with learning difficulties helped to deliver a teaching session at Staffordshire University for students studying on a Clinical Psychology Doctorate.

this organisation focuses very much on individual needs. Keeping groups small and delivering in peoples local community means that service users get very individual attention.

The three are members of Aspire Stafford Limited, an organisation that provides daytime activities in Staffordshire for people who learn differently.

Preferring not to offer set courses but individual bespoke training plans. Aspire offers progression routes for people wanting to move on and gain new skills, find employment, live more independently or create new interests and friendship groups.

Latifa Gower, Julia Fletcher and Dawn Pritchard all attend sessions to develop independent living, work skills, literacy and numeracy.

Working in a variety of settings using innovative teaching methods Aspire offers opportunities to teach people who learn differently.

Developing communication, budgeting and organisational skills practically and involving a new experience makes learning fun.

Julie Sleight who set up Aspire, was asked by Dr Joanna Saddington a Consultant Clinical Psychologist to come along and describe the barriers to her students, that people with learning difficulties experience when they engage with health professionals. Julie explained that:

Learners are able to have a big say in the way their programme is delivered and choose from a very wide and ever expanding list of activities. Some of the activities being:

Trips and outings are regular events at Aspire with the organisation encouraging all learners to take part in the choosing and planning process.

Initially the girls were apprehensive but soon got used to the surroundings and really enjoyed meeting all the tutors and students. Joanna showed us around the campus and spent a lot of time before the session preparing them, so it wasn’t too daunting. By the time they got started they were really keen and spoke very well without any support from us. It was an amazing experience for us all. The activity gave a massive boost to their confidence, leaving them feeling ready for another challenge. They were presented with certificates which they have all proudly framed.

Healthy living, eating and exercise, cooking, budgeting, safety in the home and the community, being safe when accessing public transport, investigating and using community facilities, arts and crafts, music and movement, performing arts, needlecraft and home decoration, gardening and growing fresh produce on an allotment. When developing literacy, numeracy and IT skills, programmes are made very practical. Making these skills functional and relevant. Recently a small group organised a trip to Media City in Manchester arranging for the entire group to be part of The Countdown television audience.

The University students were very interested in what they had to say, the feedback was really positive with students telling the girls their comments would definitely remain with them and influence their practise when they qualify. In February Aspire will be visited by the first of these psychology students who will see good practise and learn more from our learners. Aspire Stafford Limited offers daytime opportunities for people with learning difficulties in Staffordshire. Set up two years ago and run by experienced and qualified tutors 26

ry’s The Friends of St Ma

Present…

Into the Shadows - The Sound of the Sixties The Shadows are possibly this country’s finest instrumental group of all time. Cliff Richard’s backing band, they had 5 number one singles, 16 Top Ten hits and 69 chart entries spanning 5 decades – illustrating their lasting appeal. 1960 was the age of the juke box and coffee bars. Coronation Street appeared on TV for the first time, Wolves won the FA cup and in July of that year The Shadows made Number One in the Charts for the first time with “Apache”.

Although not normally associated with the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, beneath their clean cut image lay tension, heartbreak and tragedy. Hear their story as told by guitarist, Chris Stratman, with live performances of many of their greatest hits.

At St Mary’s Church, Stafford on Saturday 28 February 2015 at 7:30pm. Tickets are £5 from Mews Music, opposite the church or by post from friendsofstmary@gmail.com Wine/beer/soft drinks and hot drinks available.

Date set for Poet Laureate Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy will be performing in Stafford in March. She has just been made a Dame in the New Year’s Honours list. Dame Carol Ann Duffy was the first female poet laureate. A former Stafford Girls High School pupil she enjoyed Rising Brook library as a child, describing it as “her favourite place in the world - a hushed Aladdin’s cave of adventures”. Her grandfather was an avid reader, who bought her a copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for her seventh birthday which inspired her love for books and reading. She will be joined by the George Galway quartet for an Evening of Poetry and Jazz. George is the brother of James Galway, the famous flautist. Often overshadowed by the huge international success of his famous brother James Galway, GEORGE GALWAY is guaranteed to be one of the most tasteful and melodic sax, flute and clarinet players you’ll ever hear. Not one for screeching and squawking,

George relies on nailing the most sensitive melodies and creating solos that you will remember. Very, very special and every ounce as good as his brother!

Carvers Building Supplies

Re-launch event December 2014

Carvers Building Supplies certainly put themselves well and truly back on the map with the Carvers 2: The Return VIP re-launch event on Saturday 6th December. The event, which was attended by over 250 guests including sports personalities, local MPs, media, suppliers and customers. Guests also included Hugh Porter MBE and Anita Lonsbrough MBE, Paul Uppal MP, Emma Reynolds MP, Councillor Roger Lawrence, Councillor Peter Bilson, Councillor Wendy Thompson and of course Dicky Dodd!

Guests enjoy the champagne reception

programme cataloguing details of how Carvers got back on its feet to now include a Drive through Trade Warehouse.

The event was held on site at Littles Lane, Wolverhampton in a grand marquee and marked the opening of the ‘Builders’ Village’, which now houses franchises, SJ Dixon, Tile Choice, Chandlers Roofing and Rayton Electrical, making Carvers a complete one stop shop for trade and retail customers alike.

There were a couple of surprises along the way as Directors, Neil Kendrick and Bryan Purslow were honoured for their exceptional service since the fire and perhaps the biggest surprise of all was saved for Henry Carver, who was honoured in a ‘This is your Life’ presentation and was greeted by children, Jack, George and Tilly, wife Libby and mother Sheila, who surprised him on the evening.

Carvers has been trading in Wolverhampton since 1896 and experienced a devastating fire, which destroyed much of the site back in February 2012.

The evening followed with live entertainment from Go West, who certainly got people on their feet and a disco ensured guests were dancing into the early hours.

The evening was hosted by Bob Warman and highlighted the tragedy of the fire and the exciting £6 million rebuild

Carvers promise that their new facility will stand them in good stead for the next 118 years... at least!

Composite Doors at Composite doors are the newest type of doors used in homes. Composite doors have been designed taking into consideration the common flaws experienced in singular material doors. Using a combination of materials which have been selected for their beneficial properties, composite doors allow for the old flaws to be effectively ‘designed out’. Composite doors are made up from a variety of materials, including PVC, wood, insulating foam and GRP (glass reinforced plastic). The combinations of materials result in a door that is very strong and secure. They have a high resistance to weathering and will not react to seasonal changes like a singular material door. They have a higher thermal resistance than wooden doors, due to the insulating foam core. They are designed to appear as a wooden door, with an attractive wood grain, but thanks to the materials used, it won’t fade, discolour or require any maintenance beyond wiping with a damp cloth if it gets dirty. Their superior quality sets a new high standard within the door industry, with a fantastic range of colours make sure your next door is a Composite door from Winterwarmth. We also sell a large range of products including Windows, Conservatories, Patio Doors, Bi-folding doors, and Fascia’s /Sofits. All of our products are A rated

and energy efficient. We also offer a glazing service, including mirrors, glass shelves, processed work, any size and style and replacement sealed units. At any one point in time, Compton Hospice is tending to over 500 patients. Whilst some patients visit our dedicated hospice building, the vast majority of patients receive care in the comfort of their own homes. We aim to provide the very best level of care for patients and families at home, which includes: Community Nurse Specialists: Our team of highly skilled and specialist nurses (who operate very similarly to Macmillan Nurses) visit patients in the home to monitor pain and symptoms, and can even prescribe medication.

formance clinic er p lf o g t lis ia ec sp y p Active Thera Golf is a popular leisure activity enjoyed by approximately 60 million men, women and juniors globally and unlike some sports can be played throughout life. People who play golf are reported to reduce their risk of death (mortality) by 40% due to the beneficial effects upon lifestyle which golf brings. A round of golf can take between 2-6 hours and within this time golfers walk approximately 6 miles using 13,000 steps and delivering multiple powerful strikes to the golf ball. If golfers carry their clubs (approximate weight 10-15kg) then the demands upon the body are further increased. Modern professional golfers are athletes who play golf and regularly engage in fitness training to improve performance and reduce their injury risk. However even recreational amateur golfers can achieve these same aims through engagement in regular golf specific physical training. This can be adapted to the individual aims of each golfer as not everyone wishes or requires to train like Rory McIlroy! Irrespective of your reason for playing golf if you improve the quality of your movement during your golf swing then you are likely to observe an improved golf game especially if you receive some concurrent coaching from a PGA qualified golf coach. So with this in mind here are 5 tips which can help you toward a better golf game! Better body=Better golf. It is the body which moves the golf club! 1. Get coaching – irrespective of your aims book a session (or ideally group of sessions) with a PGA qualified golf coach. Getting into poor habits when you start playing golf can have a significant impact upon how you improve and incorrect habitual movements are harder to change after sometime. Also there could be movements you are making within your golf swing which could contribute toward injury. 42

2. Warm up – This doesn’t mean just hit some golf balls before playing. Perform a dynamic warm up for 10-15 mins prior to practice, lessons and play and before hitting any shots. Research has shown that up to 80% of golfers don’t warm up! You are 45 times LESS likely to get injured and your clubhead speed and accuracy improve through correct warm up. It’s a complete no brainer – IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND REDUCED INJURY RISK! 3. Posture – we all spend lots of time sitting and this negatively affects our posture and in many reduces flexibility. Having rounded shoulder posture when addressing the golf ball will impair your ability to rotate correctly and reduce your capacity to produce a controlled and powerful golf swing. Aim to perform regular mobility work in the ankles, hips and thoracic regions to improve your posture over the ball! 4. Train for golf – aim to walk 5-6 miles x3 per week. Do this gradually and increase no more than 10-20% per week. This will allow you to cover the walk distance required during a round of golf. Also most golfers benefit from improved flexibility (in particular rotation of their hips and thoracic spine regions), strength and single leg balance.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015

Training to improve these areas will increase your distance and improve accuracy. Try to ensure this training is specific to the movements required for golf and seek advice on this from a specialist golf health & fitness professional if you are unsure! 5. Footwear – consider your selection of golf shoe carefully. Your feet are the only point of contact with the floor throughout the whole of the golf swing and you will be walking up to 6 miles in your golf shoes each round! Aim for shoes which assist foot function – lighter, flexible, adequate traction control features. AVOID shoes which have narrow, shallow toe boxes which taper into a point and golf shoes with very stiff, hard plastic outsoles unless you have been specifically told to opt for this style of shoe by a health professional. The foot provides very important information to our brain during the golf swing and the more efficiently we can sense ground reaction forces then this will aid is in better movement in the golf swing!}}} Active Therapy is a specialist golf performance clinic working with golfers of all standards and ages to improve golf performance. betes Ask the Podiatrist: Dia What is Diabetes Mellitus? This is a condition where you have raised blood glucose levels (called hyperglycaemia) due to a metabolic disorder. There are two main types of diabetes: TYPE I – (Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients control their diabetes with insulin TYPE II – (Non Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients may control their diabetes through diet, tablets or sometimes insulin. Both of these types of diabetes can be harmful to feet. It is essential that everyone with diabetes of either type visit a Podiatrist regularly for a 6 – 12 monthly check up and whenever they have foot problems. Your podiatrist may recommend a much more frequent visit. Why should diabetics see a Podiatrist? Diabetes is directly linked with profound changes to your feet. The circulation to and around your feet can deteriorate meaning you are more

susceptible to infection, less likely to heal quickly and your skin quality reduces meaning it is easier to damage. The sense of feeling in your feet can also reduce so that it is possible to damage your feet and not know about it. It is important we monitor your feet regularly so that we can detect these changes early on. Even some seemingly simple problem like corns, callus or toenail cutting could cause much bigger problems like ulcers, infection, gangrene, and at worst amputation if not treated properly. Basic Guidelines for Diabetics • Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly – especially between the toes, and file nails. • Apply an aqueous cream such as E45 to your feet daily but not between your toes. • Check your feet daily for anything unusual – colour changes, breaks in the skin, swelling, discharge etc. • Always wear shoes or house slippers on your feet to protect them.

• Ensure your shoes are the correct fit and are adjustable – 2 cm heel, laced shoes are the best. Warning Signs Redness, Swelling, Pus, Discharge, Pain. Diabetes health care is a key part of a podiatrists job role.

ioxin N – k in M a L n lo a S to New WHY NIOXIN? SIMPLY PUT, BECAUSE MORE THAN 70% OF USERS NOTICE THICKER, DENSER-LOOKING HAIR IN JUST 4 WEEKS. The No1 stylist-recommended thinning-hair brand in the US, NIOXIN’s customised range of hair and scalp products is proven to deliver noticeably thicker, denser-looking hair. THERE IS NO SINGLE CAUSE OF THINNING HAIR; THERE ARE MANY Thinning hair affects men and women of all ages. The cause is often genetic, and can also be triggered by certain life stages. Hair cells reproduce at a faster rate than any other in our bodies, so they are also sensitive to changes in our health or environment. Addressing thinning begins with understanding what causes and contributes to it, and the early warning signs to look out for. DISCOVER THE SIX REASONS YOU MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING THINNING HAIR:

GENETICS A common family predisposition involves natural, age-related hormonal changes that can trigger hair loss. This is caused by the conversion of testosterone into the toxin Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and can be inherited from either your mother or your father.

HEALTH ISSUES Several underlying health issues can cause hair thinning, including a malfunctioning of the hormoneproducing thyroid gland and the natural hormonal changes women experience after pregnancy and during the menopause.

MEDICATION The hair follicle is incredibly sensitive to changes in the body. Any hormone therapy (including birth control) can contribute to hair thinning, as can steroids, specific chemotherapies, and medication for blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and acne. NIOXIN IN-SALON SERVICES AVAILABLE AT SALON LA MINK Hair without a healthy scalp is like a tree without firm roots – insecure, susceptible to breakage and unable to take in the nutrients it needs to grow properly. Research shows that a regular program of scalp maintenance is an important step towards attaining your full hair potential. Inspired by advanced skincare, each Therapy combines Nioxin’s 3 Step Cleanse, Optimise and Treat approach with a Rebalancing Massage to stimulate and nourish the scalp – helping you attain your full hair potential.

NUTRITION AND DIET What you eat can play a significant role in hair thinning. A high consumption of animal fats, rapid weight loss and liquid protein diets can result in a lack of amino acids, biotin, iron, protein and zinc all of which are essential for healthy-looking hair.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Air and water pollutants, chlorine, metals and minerals may be left on the scalp and hair as we wash with water every day, contributing to thinning. Pollutants such as pseudo-estrogens and toxins from within our bodies are also a factor.

STRESS AND TRAUMA Stress can produce increased levels of testosterone, which converts to DHTand interrupts the hair’s growth cycle. Stress also constricts blood supply through the capillaries, restricting oxygen and nutrient uptake and vitamins to the hair follicle. 44

Dieters turn to 'fat freezing' to lose Christmas love handles Thousands of people in the Midlands are freezing their fat off after Christmas, rather than burning it off at the gym, after signing up for a new treatment at UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton that uses extreme cold to blast away love handles, muffin tops and spare tyres. The procedure, which can be done during a lunch hour, is proving particularly popular with men and women who do not want surgery or liposuction. Those seeking a pre-emptive strike against the festive bulge are hooked up to a machine that uses vacuum pressure and deep cooling to target fat below the skin, freezing unwanted fat cells in the waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms and back. Patients can answer emails and telephone calls, read a book or watch a film while having the Cryolipolysis LipoFreeze treatment. It is used for small areas of fat Before

that refuse to budge with diet and exercise alone and is done without anaesthetic or medication. Because the procedure is totally non-invasive, clients can return to normal activities directly after treatments. According to Hanna McCormac at UltraSlim Clinics, it is best for those who are moderately overweight and removes up to 40 per cent of fat in the targeted area, with the results showing gradually over a period of weeks after the procedure.

At UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton, which has so far performed 100’s of the procedure throughout December and the New Year, Hanna McCormac, says: "I had my love handles done myself. The fat dies, the skin tightens, it's incredibly easy and it only takes about an hour. The beauty is, it's permanent. If you eat a lot you'll gain weight in other places, so you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but the fat that we freeze doesn't come back."

which gives elasticity to the skin. The radio frequencies cause water molecules in the deeper layers of skin to vibrate, this in turn creates friction which causes the heating effect. When heat is applied to collagen fibres, they shrink and tighten up, and over time following the treatment, new collagen also forms. Whilst the deeper skin layers are being heated, the top layers are kept cool.

We see adverts for machines that work wonders on our faces and bodies but how do they work? Two of the more widely known pieces of equipment are the CACI machine and the Apilus machine, there are also Radio and Light Frequency machines and many more. Let’s take a brief look at some of them; what they do and how they do it. The ‘CACI’ (Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument) Microcurrent treatment has been available in the U.K. for cosmetic purposes since the early 1990s. Tiny micro-currents of electricity are used to stimulate facial or other muscles in the body. The stimulation at this level is known as sub-sensory, meaning that you feel very little, if anything at all, and there is no sign of any visible muscle contraction. The muscles are gently exercised, leading to an increase in the production of protein. This tightens and firms up the muscles, reduces slackness and restores a firmer shape and tone to the face or area treated. The ‘Apilus’ electrolysis machine has revolutionised permanent hair removal. This computerised electrolysis machine 48

limits the level of destruction within the hair follicle, targeting only germ cells. Consequently protecting the skin and preventing new hair growth. Since 1875, electrolysis has been and remains the only 100% permanent hair removal method recognized by government regulatory agencies. Indeed, electrolysis permanently destroys germ cells responsible for hair growth by way of insertion of a fine probe in the hair follicle and the application of a current adjusted to each hair type and treatment area. The result is a pain free way of permanently removing unwanted hair. This versatile machine can also remove skin tags and deal with thread veins. The latest Apilus xCell Pur machine utilises a more effective frequency for treatment which makes it efficient, rapid and comfortable. Radio frequency machines provide a non-invasive treatment, using radio waves directed through a probe head which rests on the skin. The radio waves are an energy, directed at the skin to produce a heating effect. This treatment has been used for many decades for a variety of medical applications. The beam of radio frequency targets deeper layers of skin, heating them up. This creates stimulation of the skin and in particular, the collagen, a substance

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015

Light frequency treatments can help with various skin problems probably the best known is ‘Blue Light’ therapy to help deal with acne. The blue light kills P. acnes, the bacteria which cause acne on the skin. Killing the bacteria prevents acne from spreading and prevents new pimples from emerging. Blue light therapy is generally not effective if only done once; it needs to be done repeatedly in a series of treatments. Unlike some other high-frequency acne treatments, blue light therapy is painless, though it may cause a slight red coloration to the skin after each treatment. Other colours used in light therapy can help with different problems. The Chase CACI has all of this equipment including the very latest Apilus xCell Pur machine – only the third in the country and the first outside the South of England, plus the World renowned ‘Heaven’ range of skin treatments and offers a range of services tailored to your needs. We don’t want it to be obvious that you have ‘had something done’ we aim for subtlety; giving you that radiant, firm skin we all desire. Why wait? St. Valentine’s Day Or you could just plump for a piece of fine china, crystal or pottery from one of Britain’s famous factories, Having got the gift sorted out, how about making a real day of it? Celebrate in style by booking in to one of the many St. Valentine’s Day balls, dances, discos and dinners you see advertised around. Go to a fancy dress party in roaring twenties costume, to revive the memory of the grisly Valentine’s Day massacre in Chicago. Restaurants, pubs, clubs and hotels will all have something special going on.

St. Valentine’s Day is one of those odd days on the calendar that provides no real basis for celebration in this day and age. Yet, it is faithfully remembered, year after year, by people who don’t even have an appreciation of any vestiges of religious significance that may remain attached to it. St. Valentine’s day is basically one of the early Christian ‘transplants’. Early Christians sought, by changing the names of ancient and certainly pagan celebrations, to more easily convert the unbelievers of those dark ages. Perhaps it is because the day itself does have such an ancient history that it refuses to lie down and be forgotten? Perhaps it stirs some primeval race memory in us all, to make merry, celebrate the coming of spring and the plentiful promise of an awakening season? Whatever it does, however it affects you, the fact remains, it is a day that is becoming increasingly important and popular in our social calendar. Woe betide the husband, boyfriend or lover, who neglects to give some token to the love of his life. Shame on the loved one who doesn’t make some effort to send a card at least. 52

There will certainly be no shortage of things to send and give. The shops are crammed full of super gifts, in prices to suit all pockets, that will say, “you are the one“, or simply just “I love you!” Flowers are always popular and it’s worth remembering, men appreciate them as well as women. We are probably the only country in the world where men are supposed not to appreciate flowers. If you feel a bunch or spray is going too far however, choose one of the many beautiful pot plants available from your florist. Chocolates are favourite for men and women. To Hades with that diet. There is simply nothing better than an imaginative and mouth-watering selection of beautiful chocolates, in an equally beautiful box. On the other hand, if you’ve an eye to the future, think of jewellery. It suits both sexes. It will appreciate in value and it will be a constant keepsake of your affection. If none of those excite you, how about a fine wine? Or think about an article of clothing like a pair of gloves, once, in Regency times, a traditional St. Valentine’s gift. Or you could send a framed photo portrait of yourself. On the other hand, an original work of art may not go amiss and it will certainly be quite unique.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015

You could head for the theatre for a really special outing. Do it in style with dinner first and a supper dance to follow. Or look for a cinema with those double courting seats at the back. If the film doesn’t do a thing for you, there could be other things on your mind. Take time off and take your beloved for a day in the country, by the sea or into town. You could hire a chauffeur driven limousine, a Rolls for the day, or an ordinary car. Alternatively, wandering round the shops, seeing the sights and wining and dining at the end, can be a wonderfully romantic way to spend the day together. For those about to get married, a tour round available houses is no bad idea. There’s something about the spring that puts one in mind of new beginnings. If she (or he) seems reluctant to name the date, the potential of an empty house could tip the scale. You will find in spring, lots of people start to think about moving and there should be a wonderful selection of just the right sort of properties for you. Somehow, in spite of our worldly wise sophistication, we still respond to those primitive urgings the seasons generate. If you don’t feel it in spring however, you’ve just no soul. If you do, you’ll know quite instinctively, St. Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate for all the right reasons, few if any of which, will be at all religious.

g vehicle The new estate plannin The latest amendments to the Taxation of Pensions Bill position flexible pensions as the new estate planning vehicle of choice, allowing pension wealth to cascade down the generations, creating a truly tax-efficient wealth management and inheritance plan with few peers.

of choice?

Crystallised or uncrystallised what’s the difference?

Below are some key advice points for those interested in passing on their accumulated pension wealth.

Previously, those concerned with passing on their pension wealth to future generations would delay crystallising benefits to avoid a potential 55% tax charge should they die before age 75. This is no longer the case as both crystallised and uncrystallised benefits will have the same death benefit options and tax charges.

Wealth transfer vehicle

Reviewing nominations

Retaining pension wealth within the pension fund and passing it down to future generations is an extremely tax efficient estate planning solution, combining IHT free inheritance with tax free investment returns and, potentially for some beneficiaries, tax free withdrawals. The new rules will allow DC scheme members to nominate an individual to inherit the remaining pension fund as a ‘nominee’s flexi-access drawdown account’. This can be anyone at any age and is no longer restricted to your client’s ‘dependants’. If the original member dies after age 75, any withdrawals will be taxed at the beneficiary’s marginal rate. But if death occurs before age 75, the nominated beneficiary has a pot of money they can access at any time completely tax free. In either case, the funds are outside the beneficiary’s estate for IHT while they remain within the drawdown account and will continue to enjoy tax free growth.

And it goes on and on... The ability to pass on and on pension wealth doesn’t stop there. The nominated beneficiary can nominate their own successor who will take over the drawdown fund following their death - unlike the current rules where lump sum death benefits are the only option for non-dependants.

The new death benefit rules have changed the dynamics for those looking to pass on any remaining pension fund on death. This means revisiting existing death benefit nominations to ensure they continue to meet client’s needs and objectives. It’s also worth discussing whether their existing scheme will even allow their preferred solution. And under the new rules, the scheme administrator cannot nominate someone for nominee’s drawdown if there’s an existing dependant or an existing nomination in place.

Bypass Trust - when you still might want one It’s worth remembering that each time pension fund is inherited it’s the new owner that has control over the eventual destination of those funds. Not only can they nominate who benefits on their death but, under the new flexibility, they could withdraw the whole fund themselves leaving nothing left to pass on. This may be an issue where there are children from previous marriages or concerns about a beneficiary’s ability to manage their own financial affairs, either through a lack of capacity or their own reckless spending habits. Where control is an issue, there are two potential solutions: •

Nominate a split share of the pension fund, for example, 50% to the spouse with the remaining 50% split equally among the children. This gives all parties their own fund which they can manage themselves and when it’s gone, it’s gone.

Pay a lump sum death benefit to a Trust which will put the control into the hands of the member’s chosen trustees. The trustees can determine when and how much to distribute to beneficiaries. Choosing this option means only a lump sum can be paid to the trustees there’s no option for them to be a drawdown holder.

This will allow accumulated pension wealth to cascade down the generations, whilst continuing to enjoy the tax freedoms that the pension wrapper will provide.

Tax rate determined by age at last death Each time a pension fund is inherited by a nominee or successor, the tax rate will be reset by the age at death of the last drawdown account holder. For example Joe, a widower, dies age 82 and nominated his son John to receive his flexi-access drawdown fund. As Joe died after age 75, John is taxable at his marginal rate on any income withdrawals. John sadly dies age 70 and leaves the remaining fund to his daughter Jenny. Jenny can take withdrawals from her successor’s drawdown account tax free as John died before 75.

Should I take my tax free cash? There’s no longer any reason to delay taking tax free cash if it can be gifted and outside the estate after seven years. But if the tax free cash remains in the estate and suffers IHT at 40%, it may be better to leave the cash within the pension fund if the beneficiary is able to draw on it at basic rate or less.

One Stop Stores Christmas came early for Colwich Playgroup this year in the form of a generous donation by One Stop Stores. Aaron Steadmans from the One Stop Support Centre, together with local Rugeley Store Manager Katie Jeromes visited the playgroup on Friday 28th November 2014 to present the staff and children with a cheque for £1,000.

The money has been awarded from the One Stop Community Fund, which offers grants to community groups of up to £1,000. The money will be used to fund a new play house and role play equipment. The One Stop colleagues enjoyed seeing the group in operation, participating in a morning welcome and helping the children make things out of play dough. Mr Steadmans has a child who attends the community playgroup and was keen to assist with its fundraising efforts. Playgroup Manager Louise Lewis said “We are extremely grateful to One Stop for their generous donation to update our resources and delighted Aaron

and Katie were able to make the time to visit and see at first-hand how valuable this help is to us.” The children also presented Aaron and Katie with a special Thank You Card for the donation, and for choosing the playgroup as one of the many charitable organisations they wished to help. Colwich Playgroup is a community pre-school playgroup which accepts children aged 2-4. It operates during term time from Colwich Community Hall and is Ofsted rated ‘Good’. Zoe completed the dive with her two brothers Ben (22) and John (20) to mark the 10 year anniversary of their father’s death. The siblings named their campaign ‘Jump for John Ten Years On’ in memory of their father, John Roberts Snr, who was transported to hospital in the air ambulance following a fatal motorbike accident. “It was a truly amazing experience to jump out of the plane, and I had to go first which was really scary! I am delighted with the money we raised and that we were able to mark the anniversary of our fathers’ passing with such a big event. We were really touched by the level of support we got from so many people.” said Zoe. 56

b – Fre Creative Thinkers’ Clu

As active teachers who have worked as Head of Departments, amongst other positions, Kathryn and I are always aware of two things: just how creative students can be if given the right encouragement and also, sadly, just how ‘out of the loop’ parents can feel with regards to their children’s education.

To enrol your child (and yourself) into this club, for free, please email learnmore4a@hotmail.co.uk We look forward to you joining us. Laurence and Kathryn

Our ‘Creative Thinkers’ Club’, which is totally free to join, has been set up to focus on these two key factors. Kathryn and I are always delighted to see just how much creativity, energy and fun students can have in school and when taking part in competitions. This club is for those students: who want to be innovative. Who want to challenge their minds. The ‘Creative Thinkers’ Club’ will look to challenge and inspire children (between 8-16) by running poetry competitions, creative writing competitions, Maths competitions, sending weekly puzzles, hosting chess competitions days, lego building competitions and much more. Parents will be sent information on key examination changes, 11+ information, revision strategies and how to motivate your child to work at home and revise. Spelling tips, reading strategies, booklists and recommendations for educational days out will also be emailed to parents as part of this combined package designed to help motivate students and inform parents. The first competition students will be invited to take part in will be a creative writing competition, where the best response will be rewarded with a mini ipad as a prize.

gborough Visit Shuva n der Does By Robert

The Shugborough Estate, nestled amid acres upon acres of dense foliage on the fringes of Cannock Chase, is one of the jewels of Staffordshire. Located in Great Haywood, four miles from Stafford, it comprises the magnificent, world-famous three-storey mansion house and its surrounding eight acres of land, which includes a working model farm. The National Trust took ownership of the estate in 1960

58

following the death of Thomas Edward Anson, the fourth Earl of Lichfield, and, acting on his intentions, they opened the house and grounds to the public in 1966. Today Shugborough pulls in approximately a quarter of a million visitors per year, making it one of central England’s top tourist attractions. People continue to be captivated by the grandeur of the house, which includes both Georgian and

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015

Neo-Classical elements, beautiful rococo plasterwork and a porcelain collection brought back from the voyages of Lord of the Admiralty, George Anson, in the 1740s.

Shugborough is also the UK’s only Complete Working Historic Estate. The sight of costumed guides working in the kitchens, dairy, brewhouse, water mill and farm - which includes rare farm animalshelps to preserve the tradition of the estate and brings an added appeal to visitors. The servants’ quarters house the Staffordshire County Museum, which contains England’s only log-fired brewery that still produces beer commercially. It has been a working exibit since 2007 through Titanic brewery. It was George’s grandfather, William, a local lawyer, who acquired the Shugborough Estate in 1624 for the sum of £1,000. In 1693 William’s grandson, also called William, demolished the manor house and built in its place the threestoried block which forms the centre of the house today. It became the complete Georgian mansion in 1748, after William had commissioned esteemed architect Thomas Wright to add the two-tier pavilions either side

of the house. It was George, who became Lord Anson in 1747, who funded the alterations. On one of his voyages George captured a Spanish treasure galleon worth around £400,000, one of the largest fortunes ever taken by an English captain at sea. The money was used to further develop Shugborough later on in the century and acquire more land. On George’s death his brother Thomas inherited the fortune and it was his taste for Greek classical art that led to a shift in Shugborough’s stylistic direction in the late 18th century. The change culminated in the addition of the eight huge ionic columns that form the distinctive grand portico at the entrance of the house. Thomas’s close friend James “Athenian” Stuart also created follies and monuments in

the grounds, including the Chinese Pagoda house, the Triumphal Arch, the Doric temple and, perhaps of most relevance today, the Shepherd’s Monument. A book published in 1982, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, drew attention to a mysterious inscription on the monument which is the subject of much conjecture. Its meaning has allegedly eluded the likes of Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens and has been linked to UFOs and even the whereabouts of the Holy Grail. A few generations down the line the Anson family were becoming viscounts and then lords of Lichfield. Up until his death in 2005, the fifth Earl of Lichfield, Patrick, commonly referred to as Lord Lichfield, had leased private apartments within the house from the county council. A keen photographer, the house showcases a large collection of his work. Patrick’s son Thomas is the current Earl of Lichfield but has not taken residence in the house since 2010. With the Anson family’s long association with Shugborough ending, the apartments became open to the public in 2011.

t Cannock Friends of S This year’s Light up a Life service held by St Giles Hospice and the Cannock Friends’ of St Giles at St Luke’s Church in Cannock was as well attended as ever and the Church was full. People were greeted by Cannock Friends of St Giles and members of the Rotary and Soroptimist International clubs of Cannock with orders of service and a candle to remember the life of a loved one. The service this year was again enhanced by singers Bel Canto who added their harmonies to the carols and performed two special items; these and the readings from Jayne Tooth, Senior Staff Nurse and Manager of St Giles Day Hospice and Trish Mellor of Cannock Friends added to the atmosphere and mood of the evening. As always the most poignant time in the service was when the lights were turned off

Giles

before the Christmas tree lights were switched on, leaving the church lit by the lights from the candles and allowing everyone the opportunity for quiet and private thought and reflection. During this time a soloist from Bel Canto sang ‘Sleep Holy Child’; this was followed by the congregation joining with Silent Night whilst the lights in the church were slowly reinstated. Following the service, led by Rev Peter Hart, Helen Relihan from St Giles invited everyone into the Church Centre for refreshments which were provided by Cannock Friends and also to see the book of Remembrance where names of all those being remembered are recorded. A copy of the book will be available at St Luke’s until the end of January. Many congregants first hung their candle on the Christmas tree in Church and as they left, each person was given a book mark which carried the poem read during the service: “Time”.

People who attend the service are always very generous with their contributions to the work of the Hospice and this year proved to be no exception: over £600 was donated on the evening. Cannock Friends of St Giles continue to raise funds for the Hospice, accept donations from local people and attend functions to represent the hospice.

Colwich Community G Community groups in Colwich joined forces to give a group of local elderly residents a Christmas day out to remember. Staffordshire based support in the home company ‘Help at Hand Home Support Services’ provide help to people of all ages, including the elderly, many of whom are alone or find it difficult to get out and about. Partners Tracy Amos and Jackie Falconer decided to organise a special Christmas lunch and entertainment with a little help from their friends. In her spare time, Tracy is also Secretary for the Colwich Community Hall Association and when the group heard about the plans, the troops were rallied to assist! The committee and helpers agreed to fund the meal, provide transport, volunteer for the day, as well as organising bingo as part of the general entertainment. Tracy and Jackie also received many offers of help from family and local businesses including Foregate Motor Services and Haywood Village Supplies. During group sessions, the young guides had also helped to make table decorations and party favours containing small gifts which were distributed on the day. After the three course festive meal cooked by Tracy, Jackie and their team of willing helpers, the guests enjoyed a game of bingo followed by carols and songs provided by Second Time Around, Age UK choir. Tracy said “This has been a wonderful day. It was great to see so many people joining forces to make it a special time for those who don’t have so much help or support close to home. Both adults and young people alike have given a lot of their time, and those we are providing it for have had a brilliant day out.” Jackie added “We’d like to extend our thanks to all those who helped in so many ways to make this event such a success.”

ethos behind the GT86 sportscar or not, this latest version is a pleasure to helm from its towering driving position.

Al Gore was fined when the inconvenient truth that he’d been speeding in his Toyota Prius emerged. Colonel Pierpoint installed the very first roundabout in this country so that he could safely navigate the crossing-point to his club in St James’s, London. Soon after, while glancing around to admire his creation, he was knocked down by a taxi cab.

Although far from being sporty, the RAV4’s 2 litre D-4D diesel powerplant happily pulls its weight about town and on longer motorway cruises, where it has a generous surfeit of 310 Nm of torque on hand. This version - the two-wheel drive Active RAV4 - controls its large body mass very well when things get twisty and it steers with precision, always coping admirably in normal conditions without four wheel drive. Although 4x4 is an option for other range variants.

Like the Oxford city centre cyclist who, unlit at 11pm, meanders into traffic and in front of my wheel with nothing more than a cloak of self-righteousness for protection, these people are just inviting trouble. However, woe-inducing though it may be, I understand their smugness and sense of superiority now that I’m driving the latest Toyota RAV4, because I think I’ve happened upon one of the best SUVs on the market. I’ll now explain why, with as little self-satisfaction as possible, so as to forestall the wrath of the universe. Every since the original in 1994 every previous RAV4 has been built to last for millennia, but only recently has it started to make drivers - as well as owners and occupants - happy on their way into infinity. But whichever version you choose you’ll still enjoy supreme cabin comforts. A well-suspended ride that insulates driver and family from everyday tarmac tragedies is chief among them. The sensible front-drive set-up keeps fuel costs down - the official number is 57.6 mpg; I achieved 51.8 mpg and Co2 emissions low: 127 g/km. Furthermore the slick manual gearbox on this model is a helpful and willing partner that never detracts from the journey and the ergonomically-savvy cabin bestows all of today’s modern tech - air-conditioning, Bluetooth etc - without impacting upon aesthetics.

Another area which is a marked improvement over the previous incarnation is the vehicle’s overall size. Or more specifically how its considerable heft is noticeable only inside and not outside. Subtle exterior design tricks no doubt in part account for this, but what’s harder to fathom is the way I’m able to easily thread this substantial SUV through Oxford’s labyrinthine cobbled streets, fearing only the arrival of a kamikaze cyclist. There’s room for all the family and half of your next door neighbours’ too. All of whom will enjoy ample head and rear legroom and supportive seating. Fido will be happy as well, because boot space is officially measured at 547 litres, which is code for “absolutely massive.” And there’s a easy-to-load entry and egress aspect to the boot, which will help you earn extra cash on the side if you choose to let the RAV4 become part of Pickfords house removal fleet. I used to think parking in the RAV4 was a cinch too, until I pulled a nonchalant parallel manoeuvre and scuffed a virgin 17” alloy wheel. Oh well. We all knew something bad was going to happen. I’m just grateful that no cyclists were harmed in the making of this article.

Call of the Wild Rob Taylor takes a trip into the urban jungle in the latest Fiat Panda 4x4 Road Test Writing 101: playfully and permissively play upon puns to engage and excite both reviewer and reader alike. I know the cliché all too well - it’s the kind of linguistic mechanism which brings a Eureka moment initially at the point of creation, then an enormous collective groan when re-reading. And you know where this is going, because the Fiat Panda 4x4 is just asking for it and I’m in no mood to resist, so here goes: The Fiat Panda 4x4 is a rare and endangered animal - a genuinely capable off-roader which has, ever since it emerged from a jungle clearing some thirty odd years ago, lived a solitary life in its very own market niche of pintsized paw-by-paws [You’re fired if you go any further - Ed]. Well, that’s pretty black and white then, so I’ll get to the matter in hand. And it’s green. Not “bamboo green” of course, but Tuscany Green; and it’s a refreshingly dainty but durable proposition, which is just what’s needed to inject a little

fun onto - and off, as the case may be - Britain’s dull, grey roads. Packing a gutsy 75 bhp 1.3 litre diesel power plant, the Panda 4x4 feels nippy about town; its direct steering and pinpoint gearbox combine to provide a rewarding experience which is nuanced enough to make you befriend this adorable stalwart of the Fiat family. 190 Nm of torque at low revs make performance more than adequate at speed and so the Panda is a competent cruiser, producing little wind noise and tyre roar on its way to a faintly endearing top speed of 99 mph.

watchword when choosing a Panda, because it has far more than just a cute face and winning smile going for it, there’s a host of sensible stuff too: Fiat’s favourite friend costs from £15,145 (as-tested £17,010); does 60.1 mpg on the combined cycle; emits just 125 g/km; comes with Bluetooth, USB, stop/start and air conditioning as standard; but more importantly it’s a pleasure to drive, park and live with, owing to its infectious ‘can-do’ approach to every motoring malady.

It also has a fine onboard ride which is never jarring and supple enough to win compliments from even the most car-insensitive passengers. Leg and head room is another boon which the Panda’s microscopic footprint belies - it really does feel spacious inside. Quite how Fiat has managed this, I don’t know. It certainly is not achieved by illusory gimmicks, like adding a massive sunroof.

It looks great too, with no-nonsense styling, raised suspension, big black bumpers and funky, smoked 15” ‘Off-road’ alloys. And this is not just lip-service to off-roading capability: the Panda has proven itself happy to bloody the noses of bigger (offroad) playground bullies, being as it is a proper off-roader with fourwheel drive, a rear differential and protective underfloor steel plates.

The cabin itself is a comfortable place in which to spend time. The seats are nourishing and - thanks to the £250 Winter Pack fitted to this version - heated in front; the plastics are nice to touch; the switchgear and ergonomics organised with intelligence. Intelligence is the

If you want all of the tough addenda but not the talent to go with it, you can opt for the £1,500 cheaper Panda Trekking. Personally I’d keep it exactly as it is, because I love it. It’s my new favourite animal.
