el Cancer
ts on Bow c fa e th t e G r a le C e B
Bowel Cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK, affecting almost 40,000 people each year. Both men and women are equally at risk and although it can affect people of any age, 95% of patients diagnosed with bowel cancer are over the age of 55. It is one of the most treatable cancers if caught quickly enough, and there is a high survival rate in patients diagnosed at an early stage. The main signs and symptoms of bowel cancer include blood in your stool, bleeding from your bottom and repeated loose bowel especially if lasting longer than three weeks. Other symptoms include a pain or lump in your stomach, weight loss for no obvious reason and feeling more tired than usual.
Some of these symptoms could be mistaken for other conditions such as haemorrhoids or IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) which is why seeing your doctor straight away is important. ‘People need to become more alert to the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer and to be aware of their own bowel habits, reporting anything abnormal’ say consultant surgeons and gastroenterologists at the Nuffield Wolverhampton. ‘Anyone who is worried about their bowels or experiences a change in their bowel habit lasting more than 4 - 6 weeks, or has rectal bleeding which is on-going should visit their GP for further investigations’. The NHS Bowel cancer screening programme began in July 2006 and currently screens all men and women between the ages of 60 and 69 every two years (www.cancerscreening.nhs. uk/bowel). The bowel screening test aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage which is when treatment will be more likely to be effective. The kit tests for hidden blood, the presence of which can indicate bowel cancer. All those eligible for screening will receive the kit by post. It is important that you take up this offer of screening and send the completed testing kit back. If you are over the age of 70 you can request a kit by calling 0800 707 6060. If blood is found in your sample, you’ll be asked to see your Doctor for further testing. If bowel cancer is found, treatment options will vary depending on the extent and stage of the cancer and could include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery or a combination of all three. When caught early, treatment for bowel cancer can be very successful. The 5 year survival rate of patients diagnosed with very early stage bowel cancer is over 90%, but if
04
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2013
diagnosis is delayed and the tumour has spread, it may fall to as low as 10%. If you’re invited in after screening or have noticed any symptoms, your Doctor will examine you and may arrange further tests or referral to a specialist consultant. You can also ask to be referred privately to the Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital where you can get an urgent appointment to see a consultant, usually within a few days. Here at the Nuffield we have recently invested in state-of-the-art equipment with the most advanced flexible scopes on the market. The high definition HD+ scopes are flexible cameras that are inserted into the bowel, stomach, digestive tract and bladder to help detect and diagnose cancer. We are also working towards JAG (Joint Advisory Group) accreditation on GI Endoscopy. The JAG ensures the quality and safety of patients care is paramount by defining and maintaining the standards by which endoscopy is practised in the UK (www.thejag.org.uk).
BE CLEAR! None of us want to talk about our bowels and many people understandably find it embarrassing, but awareness of the symptoms of cancer and making an appointment to see your Doctor if you’re worried, could end up saving your life. DESIGN • PLANNING • CONSTRUCTION
Buckley Loft Conversions have been established for over 20 years and is a family managed company based in Cannock Staffordshire, producing 1000’s of outstanding conversions and extensions all over the Midlands area, adding space, value and style with innovative designs and high quality construction. Whatever your budget or requirements a loft, garage conversion, or extension could be the ideal solution for your particular needs, without all the stress or financial considerations that a move can entail. With the added bonus of providing additional usable floor space, personal design input and the increase in value to your property, even in the current economic climate it still makes a wise financial decision. To help, we provide a Free Design and Quotation - We visit your property, discuss your needs and ideas and return, with hopefully a proposed design you will be delighted with. We are aware from experience that for many clients it is a stressful and confusing area. From the initial survey you will be given a fully inclusive quote. We will take care of the Architectural Plans, Building Regulations approvals and if necessary, any planning requirements through to completion. We will guide you through the process with the minimum of disruption, to achieve a first class finish that we are so proud of. For your peace of mind we are 08
members of Federation of Master Builders, Masterbond, Fairtrades and Staffordshire Trade Registered. We have our own in-house team of professionals, Surveyors, Architectural, Administrative and Construction personnel, which will design, plan and construct your project to suit your individual needs and budget. All our constructions are overseen by our Operations Manager, to help ensure minimal disruption, high quality workmanship and the necessary compliance with current Health & Safety legislation. How height, does the loft have to be? This is often one of the first questions we are asked. From the loft floor to the ceiling we advise around 2.3 metres. Anything below and it is not possible to construct a loft conversion, unless we are able to raise the roof to create the necessary additional height. This is an altogether a more complex and costly construction, but one we frequently undertake. If you are limited by height, you are still able to utilise the space, to provide a boarded storage area which provides useful storage, complete with a loft ladder for easy access.
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2013
Where loft height is limited, we have seen a substantial increase in the demand for Garage Conversions. We were approached recently by Real Homes Magazine to provide a case study of a recently completed Garage Conversion, which they featured in their September issue. The design was an instant hit with the magazine, it achieved a spacious kitchen - dining area, but also leaving a proportion of the garage as a useful storage area. We have extensive experience in all aspects of construction and a considerable amount of extensions are also built, sometimes concurrently whilst we are carrying out a loft or garage conversion. Our website www.loft-conversions.com shows a selection of these photographs that are reproduced with the kind permission of our clients. Please take a look for inspiration and to see the endless possibilities that can be developed to enhance your house and make it your perfect home. Our website only demonstrates out constructions, we do not use any studio, or Velux promotional literature, as we want our clients to see the quality of our work, although we have to give credit for the beautiful interiors to our clients.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted
up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when
we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the
personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

We want to make the process of planning and installing a kitchen or bathroom as easy as possible, by offering a full bespoke service from the planning stage right through to fitting the final product. The old adage “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” is particularly true for kitchens and bathrooms. There are so many factors to consider, that if you don’t properly plan, then your dream kitchen or bathroom could become a nightmare, and your budget compromised. At Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms we offer a full design and measuring service, free of charge, where we take you through the process of thinking through;
What’s right for you? • Finding the right units/ suites at the right price • Accurate measures so everything fits • The whole package, fitting, tiling, appliances etc. • Special features • For kitchens 3D CAD examples so you can picture how it will look Making sure you get maximum value for money by being up front with; • cost of the goods • fitting costs • appliance costs • décor costs e.g. tiling There are no hidden costs and unwanted surprises. The overall budget takes into account the above points, if not you may have to cut corners leading to disappointment with the finished result. Kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most complex rooms in the house to renovate, for a perfect result you need to plan well.
Reality A well designed kitchen and bathroom plays a vital role in the selling of houses according to research and in the current economic climate potential house buyers are looking for these important features. Higher aspirations, a decreasing housing market and greater inspiration from design shows and the internet have made people more demanding and now both the kitchen and bathroom has become the stylish centre to the home. Tim Chilton, owner of Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms says “the best way to ensure a successful kitchen or bathroom design is to formulate a plan with a project planner who will be involved until completion. Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms offer a personalised design and planning service, combined with their own fitters to help you create the perfect kitchen or bathroom of your dreams.”

Buxton’s
Buxton’s continual growth is due in part to their main road location on the A34 between Cannock and Stafford , but also their belief in the traditional values of excellent customer service and good value for money .
In the current economic climate many local retailers are struggling and many long established names have gone out of business. It is nice to find one local company that is thriving. Buxton’s Ltd is a family firm that have been supplying lawnmowers and other garden machinery for 50 years. From their site on the edge of Cannock Chase the company has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the major suppliers of mowers in the midlands. In recognition of Buxton’s high service levels and exceptional showroom and workshop facilities the company has this year been appointed an authorised main dealer for both John Deere and Honda. This allows Buxtons to offer a wider range of top quality garden machinery at even better prices.

nT The Moat House, Acto
The Moat House Acton Trussell offers luxury accommodation, fine dining, function rooms for any occasion and is an exclusive wedding venue situated in Staffordshire. Set in the picturesque village of Acton Trussell, The Moat House is a family owned grade 2 listed manor house dating back to the 14th century. This evening my partner and I were delighted to be dining in the award winning Orangery Restaurant, as we had both heard such fantastic reviews. On arrival we were taken aback with the stunning surroundings and the beautiful hotel and restaurant which runs alongside the canal. On entering the bar area we were greeted by Andrew the Restaurant Manager who welcomed us to The Moat House and showed us to our table in the main restaurant. Walking through the bar area we both mentioned the focal point which is a roaring log burner with soft sofas, perfect for escaping the cold weather outside.

We were thrilled with the intimate table we were offered as my partner and I had weeks of news to catch up on. The décor, in natural tones, is complemented by comfortably upholstered chairs and well-spaced tables with fine napery and beautiful chandeliers which was the perfect setting for our evening. Once seated and comfortable we began to peruse the menus. We both ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio from the extensive wine list whilst deciding which of the mouth-watering dishes we were going to choose. As all of the dishes sounded so tasteful we both decided that we would opt for the 3 courses with coffee from the Dinner menu which is available Sunday – Friday from 19:30 to 21:30 and priced at £30 per person. For starters we ordered the risotto of beetroot, parsley puree, crispy goats cheese and my partner choosing the ballontine of pork shoulder, green beans, fried quails egg, artichoke & sauce ravigote. Our main courses were slow braised “steak & kidney”, mushy pea puree, potato croquettes, pastry crust and the poached then roasted chicken breast, smoked chicken tortellini, cepe puree, red wine & tarragon jus.
For desserts we chose carrot cake with walnut praline and cream cheese ice cream and the chocolate torte with almond milk ice cream and florentine biscuit. Whilst we relaxed and waited for our courses to arrive we both commented on how pleasant, attentive and informative the service was and how all of the team in the restaurant had a clear pride in their role. Before our starters we were presented with an Amuse Bouche which certainly stimulated our appetite and left us anticipating great things to come. Our starters arrived shortly after and the presentation was beautiful, both cooked to perfection and very delectable. The starters certainly set the bar high – and thankfully our main courses didn’t disappoint. My steak and kidney was divine, the pastry crisp and the potatoes and vegetables plentiful. My partners dish was also a real hit, the chicken she said tasted sublime! Once our mains were finished and our desserts arrived we couldn’t wait to try them. Again the presentation was splendid and the flavours heavenly.
We were served coffee afterwards and whilst commenting on the excellent food we had enjoyed we were informed that the dinner menu changes every three weeks to take advantage of the best seasonal produce as The Moat House’s emphasis is firmly on locally produced ingredients. Our evening at the Orangery Restaurant was wonderful and the food is second to none and I would recommend to all. The Moat House is part of the Lewis Partnership who also have other establishments in the Staffordshire area, these being, The Swan and The Bear Grill in Stafford and also The Dog and Doublet in Sandon.
Our award-winning Orangery Restaurant offers an unforgettable dining experience; the magnificence of our location coupled with the temptations of our menu. Whether you choose from our tantilising A La Carte Menu or indulge with the Tasting Menu paired with wines, you can be sure there is something to suit any taste.

Castle rd o ff ta S f o ry to is H The es By Robert van der Do All images Courtsey of Steve Crampton www.electric-image.co.uk
Stafford Castle situated two miles west of the town of Stafford and just off the A518 Stafford to Newport Road, has towered over the local landscape for over 900 years. Built upon a mound that the Normans recognised as a prominent vantage point from which to survey all around them, it can be seen from the M6 motorway. It originated in the wake of the Norman invasion of England in 1066, when William the Conqueror issued an order for defences to be built against the rebellious, hostile native community. Robert de Toeni, who would later be known as Robert of Stafford, constructed a motte and bailey fortress in 1090. This was the typical castle design and structure that the Normans replicated across England during the 11th and 12th centuries, except that Stafford Castle included two baileys. The motte was simply the grassy earth mound, up to ten metres high, upon which a wood-stone tower was built. The baileys were timber courtyards, each protected by a ditch and palisade and with an entrance gate connected to a drawbridge. The outline of the castle’s defences can still be seen today. The castle’s fortunes and those of its owners the Stafford family fluctuated wildly during the medieval period. One such member, Ralph, a founder member of the Order of the Garter, oversaw the first stone construction- the keep on top of the motte- in 1348 and was then permitted a licence to crenellate and so 34

set about constructing the battlements. Three years later Ralph was named as the first Earl of Stafford. For two hundred years the castle and its occupants enjoyed a period of prosperity, highlighted by Humphrey Stafford becoming the Duke of Buckingham in 1444. Unfortunately it was not to last, with Britain during the Tudor years being a turbulent place and its rulers often brutally volatile and unsympathetic. Edward Stafford,
the son of Henry Stafford, the second Duke of Buckingham, was seen as a threat to Henry VIII on account of his royal blood and in 1521 was executed under the latter’s orders. There followed a short period where Stafford Castle and its three deer parks were in the hands of the crown. The castle was returned along with a small piece of land but it was not able to regain its former wealth. During the early part of the English Civil War the castle was defended by the Gallant Lady Isabel, a staunch Royalist, but the Parliamentarians won control in 1643 and its condition had worsened to such an extent that after a few months of abandonment they ordered its demolition. Throughout the subsequent century and beyond the site remained empty, until 1813 when it was rebuilt on its medieval foundations in the Gothic Revival Style. Sadly, it eventually fell back into disrepair until the Jeningham family restored it to a four storey keep. Although work was never completed on the castle, the keep remained lived in until 1949. The Stafford family moved back in originally and then in the twentieth century caretakers Mr and Mrs Stokes took residence. The Stokes’ used to provide tours of the site and served cups of tea and cakes to visitors. By 1949 much of the woodland surrounding the castle had been
felled and as a result the keep was exposed to strong winds, causing large pieces of masonry to fall from the towers. The castle was judged to be unsafe and vacated once again. In 1961 Lord Stafford gave the castle to the local authority and shortly afterwards a young boy was killed when the South Front collapsed. A year later all the walls had been reduced to the height of the North Front to considerably increase safety. Following significant excavation and restoration work in the 1980s, the castle is now listed as a Grade II building and considered one of the best surviving examples of Norman earthworks in the country.
The 26-acre Stafford Castle site is open to the public. It includes the keep, inner and outer bailey, a visitor centre, carpark and woodland surrounding a restored medieval herb garden. Introduced following an inventory taken in 1537, the aromatic herb garden contains herbs relating to specific illnesses and serves as a reminder of the faith once placed in herbs and the importance they still hold today. Stafford Castle is also well noted in the local region for providing special events, including an annual Shakespeare production as part of the Stafford Festival.

Built in appliances form an integral part of many kitchens and today there are many exciting designs to chose from to enhance your home. Webbs as a leading Euronics member are proud to stock the exclusive range of Blomberg built in products. Blomberg products are only on sale in the UK through quality Euronics dealers. They have over 125 years worth of experience in manufacturing and produced their first washing machine in 1949, in Germany. Quality of construction, design excellence and outstanding economy in use are all clearly evident in the new Blomberg range which covers cooking, washing, and refrigeration. All Blomberg products are covered by a comprehensive three year parts and labour warranty to give absolute peace of mind to purchasers. Mark Tranter, built in specialist at Webbs, says “we really like the Blomberg products, they look fantastic, work well and the prices represent great value for money. Our customers really love the three year parts and labour guarantee too. This really shows the faith that Blomberg have in the quality of their products. It represents a great saving for our customers too because if they had to pay for that sort of warranty it would add a big cost to the price they would have to pay”. “As well as functionality, design is really important to a customer purchasing built in appliances for their kitchen. This is both in terms of really looking great, but practically too. The Blomberg products have a neat modern styling without being outlandish so they will suit nearly every taste. Just as importantly the company have put great thought into how people will have to live with them. They have been made very easy to use, a great comfort when youre trying out a new recipe”. Mark says “we find customers come to us for friendly help and advice, they’re often caught between kitchen fitters who really want to sell them a kitchen and the big sheds who more or less leave them to select products themselves. What we do is to talk to customers to really find out what they both need and want and to show them the most appropriate products for them. What we want is a happy customer who gets a product that exactly fits their requirements”. This level of service extends to after the sale too. Mark says “We offer a really comprehensive fitting service, because with built in products there can be snags for customers. So what we basically do is to take away any worry, fit the product to a very high standard, and make sure they are happy”. You can find out more about Blomberg and both the built in and freestanding ranges of appliances by visiting our website at www.webbs.tv. We look forward to seeing you soon. 36

Compton Hospice
Caring Together
Charity Reg No: 512387
The hospice cares for people living in Wolverhampton, Cannock, Dudley, South Staffordshire, Staffordshire, East Shropshire and parts of Sandwell. Staff at Compton Hospice are committed to providing the best care possible to the people of the Black Country. Services include in-patient care, day care, home care nursing and hospice at home, medical outpatient care and home visits, social work support, physiotherapy, lymphoedema treatment, bereavement support, complementary therapies and spiritual support, all of which are available free-of-charge to a catchment area of 1.3 million people.
These services combined cost around £6 million annually to provide, two thirds of which, is raised through the hospice’s fundraising initiatives, charity shops, local lottery and the tremendous support of the local community we serve. The hospice is very proud of the fact that over 83p in every pound raised goes directly to patient care Our support can not only make real improvements to a patient’s quality of life, it is aimed at families as well, so they can make the most of their time together, have an input into the care of their loved one, and feel better prepared for the future. To quote just two of the many patient comments we receive about the care we provide:
“All my fears just melted away”, the hospice makes you “feel better about yourself and makes you feel better too!” (Ann). “So much more positive than I ever thought possible.” (Jackie referring to the care provided for her Mum, Mary).

Stafford Castle Golf C
The Clubhouse hosts a variety of social events such as Candlelit Dinners, Dances, Murder Mystery Nights and is also available for private hire for parties, Weddings, Christenings, Funerals etc. Our proximity to Stafford Town and having our own car park makes us an ideal venue for any special occasion and our staff will ensure that all visitors are looked after and enjoy their special occasions. Anyone booking a wedding here will love the location of the Clubhouse as the garden area borders the golf course, an ideal setting for photographs. We also have links with local business, who will offer discounts to anyone booking their special occasion here. Visitors are welcome to play the course on payment of a green fee and are advised to contact the club for information on diary restrictions. Golfing societies are also welcome and we are happy to tailor society days to suit your golfing preference and your budget.
The excellent course that is Stafford Castle Golf Club stretches for 6383 yards over 18 holes. Although the course is only 9 holes, the land has been cleverly used to provide 18 different tees, which provide a different game the second way around. The picturesque parkland course offers undulating fairways and excellent greens, and the tall trees and strategically planted bushes make for an interesting round of golf. From certain areas of the course you can see Stafford Castle itself which adds to the character of the course. In the near future the plans to extend to 18 holes will wrap the course around 3 sides of the Castle which will give the perfect backdrop to Stafford Castle Golf Club and will also protect the Castle lands. The Club has invested heavily in the course maintenance and the upkeep of the Clubhouse for the benefit of members and visitors to the Club. Through this investment the course and in particular the greens, have played exceptionally well throughout the year, especially considering the weather conditions. One of the members’ favourite holes is the 5th, the punchbowl so called because of the steep sides around the green which make it look like an amphitheatre. The punchbowl is 273 yards in length and has a huge bunker named Jaws, stretching across the whole fairway, just before the green! Our mature tree lined fairways make it difficult to believe you are just 1 mile from the town centre and this makes our course the perfect location for those who want to escape with a game of golf before or after work. Members can play social or competitive golf and those with handicaps have plenty of opportunity to play in our medal competitions. There is a warm camaraderie within the membership, and members will mark cards for those new members who would like to gain a handicap. Members can play at any time around the diary without the need to book a tee and can sign in a guest at special guest rates. All guests and visitors are welcome to enjoy the hospitality of the Clubhouse and have a drink at the bar and a bar snack provided by our Caterer. The restaurant is also available for pre ordered meals.
Membership is available at Stafford Castle Golf Club, so why not join one of the friendliest clubs in the area? I popped into the Old Mill Antique Centre by the river in Bridgnorth the other day and to my surprise I found some very modern and unusually designed furniture, not what I expected at all. I had not seen that type of furniture here during my many previous visits. I sought out one of the owners Denis Ridgway to ask about it and he explained. “When we opened our Antique Centre in Vancouver over 10 years ago the man we employed

He sent me some pictures, and the price was very attractive so we bought it. The photos on this page give a flavour of the furniture on offer, but if you are interested you will have to move fast as there is only one of everything, and for the quality they are very well priced.

st Anniversary ir F s It s te ra eb el C k Staffordshire Outloo The launch of a new business when the country is deemed as being in a recession was a big risk for the team at the Staffordshire Outlook magazine, now one year on the successful family run business is going from strength to strength. Sales Manager Sharon Caldwell who has over 15 years’ worth of experience in radio and newspaper advertising, decided to start a new venture, being a local quality magazine. Sharon says “I wanted to make a proper local magazine that made light easy reading, and not just a directory of advertisers. I felt that we could really contribute to the local community by offering something that could please both readers and local businesses. We have succeeded and 12 months down the line we have the Staffordshire Outlook which is now enjoyed by over 20,000 selected homes and businesses in the Staffordshire area and also an online digital version.”
Sales Manager Sharon Caldwell
Keeping it in the family are Sharon’s Father and Editor Mal Caldwell, and Administrator Myrna Caldwell (Mother). Mal says “We have had such great feedback from both readers and businesses and we feel that the Staffordshire Outlook will be around for the foreseeable future.” Professional graphic designer Ed Wilde from Studio 28 Design & Print is responsible for the design of the magazine. This family business not only put together this great magazine but with the help of other family members including Sharon, Mal and Myrna they hand deliver the magazine’s every month to homes and businesses, whatever the weather! Across are a few local businesses who have advertised their business in the Staffordshire Outlook with great results! 44
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2013
“Here at Ralvern Ltd we have been extremely pleased and very gratefully surprised at the localised advertising done in the Staffordshire Outlook Magazine. “Every time our advert is out in the areas that the magazine covers we have numerous enquiries, with sales that out perform any other type of advertising that we do, our partnership that we have built up within the publication is simply fantastic. “I think it’s all down to the way they hand deliver all their copy’s their self, giving a larger number of viewing of our adverts. “Our customers when coming to us from the Staffordshire outlook say where they found us from, each time the publication comes out from print and goes to door, I can tell the increased footfall and telephone conversations multiply. Thanks to everything that you do, and congratulations on the Magazine’s birthday.” Simon Edwards, Ralvern Ltd “Being a new business no one knew about us, so advertising in the Staffordshire Outlook magazine has given us a huge boost generating approx. 90% of our new business. All of these new customers have
told us they have contacted Hyde’s Key Locker after seeing our advert in the Staffordshire Outlook. I want to wish Sharon and the team a Happy 1st birthday and look forward to advertising for the next 12 months.” Tom Hyde, Hyde’s Key Locker “Having advertised in the Staffordshire Outlook we have noticed that we have lots of new customers from the Staffordshire area, who have eaten at the restaurant, and we have retained their repeat custom. The magazine is also very popular with our customers as Sharon always leaves copies of the Staffordshire Outlook at the restaurant.” Lee Hickens, The Kings Repose “All of the team would like to express their thanks to all at the Staffordshire Outlook magazine, within the first week of our first advertisement we had orders placed from customers whom had walked into the showroom with the magazine in their hands! We have found that the more selective distribution of this magazine targets the right areas for us and feels like a more personal introduction to our company rather than mass distributed advertisements.” Emma Clark, Fireside Factory
uantity Q t o N ty li a u Q : n io is Rev Hi Parents/Students, Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Laurence Dalton, and I am a local private English tutor. My CV, I would like to think, offers a great degree of authority in my advice that I will offer you in this magazine, in every publication. I have been Head of Department, GCSE Manager, Monitoring and Assessment Manager, a GCSE Exam marker, an A Level exam marker and I am also consistently classified as ‘Outstanding’ according to Ofsted requirements. I will look forward to sharing my knowledge with you and hope that it helps. With all kinds of examinations approaching, parents and students alike often consider the most productive way to revise. Let me share with you my thoughts. Revision is all too often overdone, leaving students feeling tired and ambivalent towards their examinations: even the most energetic students can simply burn out at the key time. I would certainly advise revision being completed in very small chunks of time. Thirty minutes maximum. Research has suggested that our brain works at its optimum level only for fifteen minutes before it starts to tire, so thirty minutes would be a maximum. I would then suggest a small break (exercise being the best break as it helps to re activate the mind) and then another half an hour. I would repeat this process for no longer than three hours in the evening (six hours at the weekend).
promised. Makes learning interesting and obviously committed, enjoying his work. Highly recommended! Parent in Stafford Thanks you so much for the fantastic work that you have put in with my daughter for her GCSE English. The progress she has made is quite unbelievable! I would recommend you to anyone thinking of having tuition, you have given my daughter so much knowledge and confidence in the time you have spent with us. Thank you so much. Parent in Cannock I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Dalton as a personal tutor, he has spent six months after school helping my son to get better exam results and grades. I have found his attitude professional and courteous. The decision to get a personal tutor for a few hours each month was the best money I have ever spent on my sons education, although Tom attends a good school having a personal tuition plan focused on his specific needs and weaknesses, has made a difference to his prospects and confidence. Mr Dalton has great patience and has taken care to explain everything carefully I have been very impressed, Tom has even missed his football practice to attend a special seminar without any complaints! Parent in Norton Canes
It is also well known that revision is best ‘digested’ in unfamiliar circumstances or places, using unfamiliar resources. Going for a brisk walk whilst listening to an audio recording of your notes is fantastic, as is placing key notes on a post it note and placing them in slightly strange places (like in your toothbrush bag, or in your lunchbox to look at as your open up your lunch). The key to effective revision is completing it in a manner that contradicts normality: so you remember it! Why not try making a podcast of revision notes, a power point presentation to deliver to friends or even creating a rap to sing to remember key factors in each exam? Silly? Who cares! If it works and gets the grades, go for it! I hope this advice helps. Happy revising!

sents Lyra re p ’s ry a M t S f o s d n The Frie The Friends of St Mary’s began a programme of concerts last year. It is the first time we have booked an international group, and it is very exciting to have visitors from Russia. Lyra, a choral ensemble from St. Petersburg, Russia, will present a concert of Russian Choral music at St. Mary’s Church, Stafford on Thursday May 23. This is a unique opportunity to share the enormous Russian musical heritage and enjoy the sounds of Russia as interpreted by real Russians. Tickets are £7.50 available from the Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford or from friendsofstmary@gmail.com Lyra is a Russian acappella vocal ensemble from St. Petersburg, consisting of 4 members (2 female
and 2 male) trained at St. Petersburg Conservatory. They will perform in Stafford as part of a UK tour. They are led by Andrei Sysoev, tenor, who has been with Lyra since 1998. Andrey Sysoev was born in St.Petersburg in 1970. He studied in St. Petersburg Conservatory of music (graduated in 1993). In 1995, he was honoured with an Audience by POPE John Paul II as a winner of the International competition of Sacred Music in Rome. Now, he is choir master in St. Peter’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg. Their main goal is popularizing Russian choir music. Through their performances, they want to introduce the enormous musical heritage of the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as traditions of Russian folk music to all people who are interested in Russia, its history and culture.
They perform examples of Russian sacred music, starting from ancient songs of the Orthodox Church to works of little-known, but remarkable composers of the XVIII-XX centuries, as well as famous masters such as Tchaikovsky, Tchesnokov, Rakhmaninov, Stravinsky and others. These solemn, meditative chants have an urgent spiritual intensity which will transport us to a world of golden domes.
ts Tom’s Tip: Shin Splin Shin Splints is a common term for shin pain during exercise. It can be a misleading term and most medical professionals try to avoid using it. This is because shin pain and ‘Shin Splints’ can be due to several different conditions. One of the most common shin conditions that is frequently labelled ‘Shin Splints’ is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome. Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome has been reported to occur frequently in military recruits, distance runners, dancers, football (soccer) players and gymnasts. Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome has been classified into two distinct types, which affect specific tissues on the inside of the shin:
Type One
This is characterised by a stress reaction on the inside border of the shin bone. A stress reaction is a preceding stage to a stress fracture.
Type Two
This is characterised by irritation of the outer surface (periosteum) of the inside of the shin bone at the point where the Soleus and Tibialis Posterior muscles attach. 48
Regardless of the type, Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is largely caused by over-use, with those who run or walk regularly on hard or uneven surfaces being particularly affected. However, there are a number of factors, such as altered foot, knee and hip posture, which can make a person susceptible to the syndrome.
Shin Splints Treatment People suffering from Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome will feel pain on the inner border of the shin (medial Tibial border) during and following exercise. Most patients respond well to nonoperative treatment. This involves rest, strengthening and stretching exercises, followed by a gradual return to exercise after symptoms subside. In order to help prevent recurrence of the condition, a bio-mechanical analysis (an analysis of posture at rest and during walking and running) with a chiropodist/ podiatrist can be very useful. This will pick up any factors that may be making a person susceptible to Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, so that they can be corrected before a return to activity. Muscle imbalance and leg length inequality are frequent causes of mal-

alignment that can be picked up during an assessment. A common cause of Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is pes planus (flat feet) or pronated foot position (a lowered arch). These would be identified during bio-mechanical analysis. Over pronation is the uncontrolled lowering of the arch of the foot during motion. This puts increased strain on the Tibialis Posterior muscle which pulls on the inside of the shin and can produce pain. Arch supporting Orthotics/insoles can be very effective in remedying this problem.
