Why Wait ! e ic o h c r e th o n a is ” “Private

With ever-growing waiting lists on the NHS for many procedures, and in some cases the procedure no longer being available, getting treated privately may be more affordable than you think. Our services are available to everyone, whether you have private healthcare or are paying for yourself, so next time you visit your GP with a problem that needs to be seen quickly, efficiently and with clinical excellence, don’t hesitate to ask to be referred to your local private Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital for your consultation and treatment. There are 3 ways of paying for your treatment here at the Nuffield:

Pay via medical health insurance You may have medical health insurance that is provided by your employer or you may have your own private healthcare policy. We have arrangements with many insurance companies, BUPA, AXA PPP, Aviva Healthcare, PRU Health, Cigna Healthcare, to name but a few that will allow you to choose to have your treatment here. This treatment is then paid for through your private medical insurance. However, it’s important that you liaise closely with your insurance provider before and throughout your treatment.

Paying for yourself Self-pay provides the opportunity to get the diagnosis or treatment 04

you need without the wait. You can pay for your treatment as a one off tailored, fixed payment even if you don’t have private medical insurance.

Pay by medical loan In some circumstances you can arrange an interest-free* personal medical loan to pay for your treatment. First Medical Loans, our recommended finance provider, offers you a different way to cover the costs of your treatment. They will help you work out what the best options are, enabling you to go ahead with your treatment without a delay or worrying about payment. With an interest-free* loan there is no deposit required and you simply pay back the cost of your treatment with 6 or 10 equal monthly payments, completely interest free. For more information on loans please visit nuffieldhealth.com or call 0845 618 5375 to speak to an advisor. In some locations and for some procedures we have agreements in place with local NHS authorities to provide treatments in our hospitals. Ask your GP about the availability of these under the NHS choices scheme – www.chooseandbook.nhs.uk Choosing us for your treatment means you are selecting state-ofthe-art healthcare, in a spotlessly clean environment, with the most professional nurses and dedicated specialists. We have a dedicated and personable matron, who ensures the highest of standards throughout the hospital. Over the last 12 months the hospital, which is located in 6.5 acres of extensive mature grounds, has undergone a £1 million refresh

programme creating a modern, comfortable relaxed environment with the installation of the latest safety features – such as advanced nurse call systems and refreshing the operating theatres. The hospital also has an on-site pharmacy and pathology department and an imaging department capable of providing X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, ultrasound and the latest digital mammography equipment.

L-R: Ian Kershaw - TTA Chairman, Gavin Maiden - Tile Choice Director, Kevin Beasley - Tile Choice Managing Director & Kevin Field - Mapei Sales Director

Leading Midlands independent tile retail chain, Tile Choice, is celebrating after winning a prestigious award for the second year in a row at an industry awards at the weekend (20th April 2013). Tile Choice, with its head office in Wolverhampton and 15 stores across the central region covering West Midlands, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Northamptonshire, has won the ‘Excellent in Multiple Retailing Award’ from The Tile Association (TTA) Awards – the first time anyone has won this award for two consecutive years. This thriving company has celebrated an exciting 12 months of business with continued growth due to its successful business model – offering great value for money, high quality on trend products, coupled with excellent customer service to both domestic and trade customers. Testament to this is its staff training scheme which ensures high standards across all its stores. This is tested regularly by secret shopper visits to ensure all stores are performing above and beyond and regularly exceeding expectations for anyone who walks through the doors. Lee Rudkin, Marketing Director at Tile Choice, says: “After last year’s win, we were all delighted to finally be seen as a player in the industry. But to win this award for the second time is such an honour. We pride ourselves on offering 08

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2013

great service and superior products so to be acknowledged by our peers is a real boost to everyone here at Tile Choice. “The Midlands has some outstanding businesses that are performing well even in these times of recession and we want to continue to change perception that everything isn’t doom and gloom and the retail sector is alive and kicking. Exciting times are ahead for us and we are making a significant investment in digital marketing over the next few months to continue to grow the business and raise awareness of our offer. Here’s to another successful trading year.” Winning a TTA award is a statement of excellence, unparalleled in the wall and floor tiling industry. It is an achievement that provides a platform for success, elevating the winners’ standing within the industry and all awards are meticulously checked against strict financial, technical and service standards. An extra feel good factor about the TTA awards, hosted by Emma Jesson, were the kind donations of over £2,300 raised on the night for the Children Today Charitable Trust. This charity helps disabled children and young people up to the age of 25 to enjoy a better quality of life by providing them with the specialised equipment. Since 2010 the TTA Awards dinners have raised well over £20,000 for this worthwhile cause.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted

up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when

we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Nuffield Health Wolverhampton removes timelimits on aftercare for patients, in unprecedented move for private healthcare. Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital is set to launch a unique service to local patients who require common surgical procedures. For the first time, patients choosing to have their care outside of the NHS will have no time limits placed on their aftercare following procedures like hip replacements or hernia repair. The Wolverhampton hospital, part of the Nuffield Health Charity, is launching the service in light of recent high profile concerns about patient care, both in the Independent sector and the NHS. Nuffield Health says it is simply making official its ethos of always putting patients first. However, the move is significant as currently providers of private healthcare offer only short term guarantees of up to 28 days to patients following surgical procedures. 12

Following the widely publicised problems caused by PIP breast implants where women were left stranded and unable to afford corrective surgery, and the recent Government review into bad practices in cosmetic surgery, Nuffield Health hopes the move will reassure patients who have lost faith in the healthcare system. The new initiative also provides assurance and guarantees about treatment and treatment prices, often hidden by clinics offering cut price healthcare, and who provide neither follow up nor assistance should anything go wrong. Tony Avery, Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton, said: “Our relationship with our patients does not end when they walk out of our hospital. Wherever possible, we will provide follow up advice, treatment and care for as long as our patients may need it. When it became apparent that PIP breast implants were potentially harmful, unlike many other hospitals, we took the immediate step of contacting our patients, offering assessment and removing and replacing implants in those where there was need. As we saw with PIP implants, the NHS does not

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2013

have the resources to mop up after the private sector when something goes wrong after a month or even a year. We are absolutely confident that the service we offer here in Wolverhampton is second to none and because of this we are able to make this guarantee to all patients having surgery in our hospital.” Patricia Lee, Chief Executive of Nuffield Health Hospitals, said: “We hope we are providing a product which will go some way to empowering patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare while removing some of the stress and uncertainty that visiting hospital naturally causes. People need to be reassured that if they need surgery that it is effective and safe and that the decisions they make are not going to trip them up further down the line because a hospital provider is more interested in taking their money than helping them get well.” The initiative is aimed at selffunding patients who are having traditional elective surgical procedures, including hip and knee replacements, weight loss surgery, cataract surgery and hernia removal.

paces Chase Arts In Public S Nearly 300 requests for named bricks have so far been received by the Committee of CHAPS since the most recent phase of the mining memorial in Hednesford was advertised. The memorial has been the focus of considerable attention and interest, both by those who had named bricks included and by many others who have an interest in the mining industry upon which our community was built since its dedication at a service led by the Bishop of Manchester just over one year ago. The mining memorial has the full backing and support of Hednesford Town Council and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust. Further bricks will be laid around the grass areas which surround the clock in front of Anglesey Lodge and will form part of the overall memorial which has a huge Davy Lamp as its focus. CHAPS propose that work on the project will commence in October 2013, therefore it is the Committee’s

decision that a closing date for receipt of completed applications will be August 31st 2013 after which no further requests will be accepted. Anyone wishing to obtain application forms for named bricks, which will cost of £20.00 each, should contact Sheila Harding, Secretary of CHAPS. Sheila’s address for written correspondence is 18, Pinfold Lane, Norton Canes, Cannock, WS11 9PH, her phone number is 01543 275013 or she can be contacted by email: ashinnorton@btinternet.com

The Committee wish to remind applicants that requests can include names of underground and above ground workers still living, they are not limited to those persons sadly deceased. It is hoped that the time scale will give all interested parties the opportunity to make written applications and thereby ensure a further successful phase of the Memorial.

a Nepal Trek For Gurkh Retired Major Rob Cross served with The Queen’s Gurkha Engineers in Hong Kong, and then in Kathmandu, where he and his wife, Margaret, lived for 3 years. On retiring to Staffordshire they began fundraising for the Gurkha Welfare Trust of which Rob is Chairman of the North Midlands Branch. The Gurkhas are famed throughout the world as brave and fiercely loyal soldiers who have served the British for almost 200 years, in many conflicts world wide including, of course, Afghanistan. The Trust supports approximately 8,000 ex-soldiers and their widows living in Nepal, with a welfare pension of about £41 per month. In a country with no state pension this is a life-line. 20

There is no National Health Service in Nepal, and so the Trust also pays medical bills and sends doctors to run medical camps in the hills. At the medical camps anyone who attends will be treated, ex- Gurkha or not. The Trust also installs water projects, builds bridges and schools, and has built Nepal’s first retirement home. lies Carvers Building Supp 2012 was a tough old year for Carvers… After a devastating fire tore through the premises at the main site in Littles Lane, Wolverhampton on the 29th February, the future of the 116 year old company hung in the balance. The following day, MD Henry Carver released a statement vowing to ‘regroup and rebuild’ and in the twelve months following the fire, that’s just exactly what he’s done. Now, nearly eighteen months on the Company is very much looking forward to the future and has just recently launched their brand new Kitchen Design Studio. After operating for many months without a showroom of any description, the team is delighted to get back on their feet and reap all the rewards that a showroom can offer. Located underneath the existing Carver Cooker Centre, the Studio inhabits the former Carver boardroom in part of the old Carver building, undamaged by the fire. The studio is fully equipped and offers a wide variety of kitchen displays, featuring modern, contemporary and traditional designs along with a whole host of accessories including all the appliances you need to make your kitchen the real heart of your home from Neff to Smeg, Meile to Kitchen Aid, they have appliances for every need and budget. Kitchen Installations Manager, Phil Rowley is delighted with the results “Our new showroom features a great range of fitted kitchens. Here you can get a real feel for the different styles, colours, and textures that we can offer, to suit all budgets. Our professional designer can take your idea and turn it into the perfect kitchen. With just a few measurements and your selected kitchen style, we can produce drawings and even computer renders, so you can see what your kitchen will look like.“

The Kitchen Design Studio’s main aim is to create a perfect workable space and ease some of the stress and strains associated with work being undertaken within the home, through home visits, design, and installation and above all see the project management through to completion. The following months also see some other exciting developments, with the launch of the Trade Drive through Warehouse that will house a complete range of insulation, plasterboards, cement, timber and

joinery products, allowing trade customers to park next to the materials and can therefore be quickly picked and loaded, whilst all under cover. In addition, groundwork’s are due to commence in early August for the build of the final phase, the main showroom and builders village. All of which, will expand previous trading facilities and offer a fabulous state of the art new customer showroom.

Exciting times are ahead at Carvers…

The Dog & Doublet In

Comfortably nestling in the beautiful village of Sandon, Staffordshire, The Dog and Doublet Inn offers luxury accommodation and a traditional restaurant.

was in the archway of the restaurant with absolutely stunning views out of the huge window.

Perfectly situated with easy access from the M6 and A51 The Dog and Doublet is a charming Arts and Craft period Inn and welcomes anyone who loves character and has a healthy appetite for delicious food!

Making a choice from the menu was really hard as everything sounded so appetising.

This evening my partner and I had chosen to dine at The Dog and Doublet Inn as so many people had recommended the restaurant to us in the past and we felt this would be the perfect way to finish off a fantastic day we had spent exploring Staffordshire. Driving through the countryside on this sunny evening we approached The Dog and Doublet Inn and both agreed that this was a truly impressive building in such a great location. Once parked on the adjoining car park we couldn’t wait to go in. Walking past the large outdoor area with plenty of seating we debated whether to eat outside but both said it wasn’t quite warm enough yet. On entering the bar we were greeted by the Restaurant Manager Eleanor who guided us to our table which

30

The restaurants décor, we described as a traditional country feel but with a modern twist! We were given the evening dinner menu and also ordered two glasses of Sauvignon Blanc from the extensive wine list.

We started with the crayfish, prawn and crab salad with my partner choosing the sautéed chestnut mushrooms, shallot, garlic and parsley, brioche toast, poached egg and truffle hollandaise. Both starters were perfect before our hearty mains. For our main course we opted for the beer battered cod with crushed peas, hand cut chips, lemon and tartare sauce and the 8oz Staffordshire burger, toasted bap, hand cut chips, sweet corn relish and garlic mayonnaise. When our mains arrived they were beautifully presented and were full of flavour and most enjoyable. Surprisingly there was space for dessert so I chose the raspberry bakewell tart with vanilla ice cream and my partner having the banoffee pie with ice cream. The desserts were both delicious and refreshing and were a wonderful end to a wonderful meal.

anal C e ir h rs e st e rc o W d n e a van der Does The StaffordshirBy Robert

The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, often abbreviated to the Staffs and Worcs (pronounced “Wusts”), is a 46 mile-long narrow canal that links the River Severn at Stourport in Worcestershire to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Haywood Junction. It is part of an intricate network making up the Waterways of Mainland Britain and provided one of the major routes of the canal age, when it supported a constant flow of coal boat traffic. Meandering through softly undulating Midlands countryside, the Staffs and Worcs skirts around the edges of Birmingham but never becomes truly urban. It connects at one end to the River Severn at the Stourport Basins, where the southern reaches run close to the River Stour-an important wetland habitat-before suddenly emerging into a stunning sandstone landscape at Kinver. At the northern end, in Staffordshire, it runs through the pine forest and open heathland of Cannock Chase. It passes the grounds of the Shugborough Estate, before merging with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Tixall Wide.

34

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2013

The Staffs and Worcs was a first generation ‘contour’ canal, opened in 1772 as part of engineer James Brindley’s idea to create a ‘Grand Cross’ of canals connecting the rivers Severn and Trent with the Mersey in the north and the Thames in the south. It suffered a decline in popularity with the advancement of more direct canals such as the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, which provided a more direct route between Birmingham and Bristol, in the early nineteenth century. However the company who had funded the canal’s construction, “The Company of Proprietors of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Navigation”, was able to remain competitive by increasing the hours when the locks could be used, before, in 1830, opening them 24 hours a day. Despite added competition from railways the company remained in business up until 1948 when British canals became nationalised via the Transport Act 1947. The canal had been run from the same Wolverhampton offices for over 170 years. Profits had though been steadily falling since the 1860s. In its later years the canal’s main trade had come from transporting coal from Cannock to a power station at Stourport. When this power station closed in 1949 the only commercial traffic came from a half-mile stretch between Autherley and Aldersley Junctions.

The Canal came very close to being closed by the British Transport Commission in 1959, but was saved by volunteer group the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Society. It was reclassified as a cruiseway nine years later and then declared a conservation area in 1969. The Severn and the Trent: two of Britain’s largest river catchments, are linked together by the Staffs and Worcs. The canal connects to several other canals along a northsouth route, creating a network. It links with the Trent and Mersey Canal and heads north to Stoke-on-Trent, Cheshire and Lancashire and east to the East Midlands. It merges with the BCN Main Line and the Stourbridge Canal in the Black Country and Birmingham, and meets the Shropshire Union Canal to carry on towards Chester and North Wales. Cutting a snake-like silhouette through twisting river valleys the Staffs and Worcs somehow maintains a serene atmosphere despite brushing up against the fringes of major towns and cities. During the week the canal can even feel somewhat neglected, adding to its charm and allowing opportunities for walkers to get close to nature. As well as being a popular residence for mallards, moorhens and herons, the waterways can also offer glimpses of far less frequently spotted species such as kingfishers and otters. To enjoy the full extent of the journey along the canal, narrowboat cruisers should allow four or five days for completing its 45 locks. Many hireboat companies advertise deals for seven day holidays which combine a cruise of the River Severn with the Staffs and Worcs. Alternatively the canal towpaths and adjacent fields and woodlands provide an enchanting and historical backdrop for cyclists and walkers to pass through and escape the traffic of the modern world.

A Child of Mine In September 2007 our family was complete, we were blessed with two beautiful children, Georgia, 4 and a new baby boy called Lewis, we were happy and very much looking forward to our future together. Sadly, 8 months later Lewis became ill. He was diagnosed with a disease we all dread, the word that sends shivers down our spines and that most of us have will have been touched by at some point in our lives. Lewis was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma,

an extremely aggressive childhood cancer; our world had fallen apart. We remained positive, our way of coping maybe. But we also prepared for a fight and we were definitely not going to give up on Lewis. The next two years certainly had their highs and lows, Lewis fought hard, took everything in his stride and always with a smile. Yet, despite such a strong and courageous fight, Lewis’ little body was weak, and he died peacefully in my arms on 3rd July 2010. A day that will remain embedded in our souls forever. In the months after Lewis’ death, we were aware of many gaps that existed in bereavement care. Like many families who have faced a challenging journey, they want to give something back and we were no different. Our vision was to create an information source, somewhere to include as much information as possible specifically to help anyone affected by the death of a child, regardless of their age, or circumstance and so A Child Of Mine was born. Initially we

established our website achildofmine. co.uk, which still remains to be a comprehensive resource centre for bereaved parents, with information and guidance on all aspects of losing a child, from the practicalities of when a child dies, to more sentimental ideas. But, we have come a long way in the last 18 months and now work with some of the leading healthcare professionals and children’s hospitals in the UK. We research and advise information required by either families or professionals and are now in a position to offer more direct services and financial assistance to families within Staffordshire. We also have an application pending with the Charities Commission to become a fully registered charity.

Cllr Bob Todd and Lacey Stevens

A Hednesford student who raised money for Katharine House Hospice has been awarded Cannock Chase Council’s Youth Endeavour Award for 2013. Lacey Stevens was nominated by Mr. Broomhall of Kingsmead Technology College, for her fundraising efforts for Katharine House Hospice, who provide a range of services offering help, care and support for people with advanced life-limiting conditions across mid-Staffordshire. Over the last two years Lacey has taken part in the ‘Winter Walk’ an annual event organised by the Hospice which is a five mile walk that starts and ends at Milford Common, and goes through the Shugborough Estate. In participating in this event Lacey has raised over £700, all in her own time. The Council’s Youth Endeavour Award is given to a young person between the ages of 11 and 18 living in the Cannock Chase District who has made an outstanding contribution to the community, shown great bravery, or helped others in some way. We believe such people should be recognised and encouraged, and be proud of their achievements. 40

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2013

Lacey received her award from outgoing Chairman of Cannock Chase Council, Cllr Bob Todd, at a meeting of Full Council on Wednesday 22nd May. Cllr Bob Todd said “Most stories about young people today are negative, our Youth Endeavour Award gives us the opportunity to recognise and reward the positive achievements made to our community by our young people. It was a pleasure to meet Lacey and present her with the award, she is a worthy winner.”

KING EAR EAR EAR EAR RAE RAE

ucational d E n A s: y a d li o H er The Summ It is nearly here! The sun is shining. The sense of positivity within us all comes rushing back, as we no longer have to cope with rain, coldness and darkness (for at least a day or two!). It is a time that students, especially, look forward to. No school. No teachers. No learning. Laughter rings through playing fields. Footballs are over used and a good time is had by all. But then comes the return to school. Throughout my years of teaching, I have lost count of the amount of times that teachers have said to me how much the six week holiday period damages the learning of children. There is often an alarming drop of retained learning when students return, tanned and rather sad that their lovely break is over. Students simply forget what they have learnt, and regress alarmingly. What can be done about this? Students will not thank me for suggesting this, but a small but sustained amount of learning should be maintained. I, for example, have created a personalised independent learning project for my students over the holidays, that encourages them to put into place all of the skills that they have learnt over the year with me, and use their own initiative in researching for the project that I give them. I would be happy to talk to any parent about this cost effective but productive project.

Nightmare

A few testimonials from parents who children have been taught by Mr Laurence Dalton: I have been quite staggered at the pace of improvement in my sons work, he has stated that he has learnt more in three sessions with his tutor then he has in nearly four years at secondary school. Good mix of internet based and home visits, tutor obviously organised setting and marking work on time as promised. Makes learning interesting and obviously committed, enjoying his work. Highly recommended! Parent in Stafford Thanks you so much for the fantastic work that you have put in with my daughter for her GCSE English. The progress she has made is quite unbelievable! I would recommend you to anyone thinking of having tuition, you have given my daughter so much knowledge and confidence in the time you have spent with us. Thank you so much. Parent in Cannock I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Dalton as a personal tutor, he has spent six months after school helping my son to get better exam results and grades. I have found his attitude professional and courteous. The decision to get a personal tutor for a few hours each month was the best money I have ever spent on my sons education, although Tom attends a good school having a personal tuition plan focused on his specific needs and weaknesses, has made a difference to his prospects and confidence. Mr Dalton has great patience and has taken care to explain everything carefully I have been very impressed, Tom has even missed his football practice to attend a special seminar without any complaints! Parent in Norton Canes

Failing this, reading is key. Reading showcases all of the skills that students need to be aware of: spelling, vocabulary, sentence structures and imagination. Purchasing a book that revises all of the skills that should be used in English is always a good idea, and then asking your children to write imaginary letters, speeches, reviews and stories, baring these skills in mind, is a really good way of practising these skills (I have just finished writing a book, which will soon be on Amazon, called ‘Seven ways to be successful in your English exams’. I will happily send you over a copy if you send me an email with your details). Another idea that I use with my students is that I encourage them to read a good Broadsheet newspaper, daily. Not only is vocabulary significantly enhanced by being exposed to this kind of material, but commentaries and articles in this newspaper use all of the essential skills that English teaches should be trying to teach their students (repetition, triples, complex sentences and so on). This is a really effective use of time, and will have a considerable impact on many dimensions of your child’s educational development. I really hope this helps to guide you through what is potentially educationally tricky time. Enjoy the summer! Kind Regards,

Mr Laurence Dalton. BA in English Literature, PGCE

Complete on si en xt E b lu C ll ba ot Fo Cannock Rugby Union Cannock Rugby Union Football Club on Stafford Road, Huntington now have some of the best facilities in the County. Our 4 changing rooms, 2 officials rooms, a physio room and a full suite of washrooms are completed on schedule. This achievement shows the determination of the Club’s committee and members to grow their membership and provide an excellent venue for use by the local community. Our Men’s Senior squad have started training in preparation for our annual 7’s competition on the 13th July. We have a full day of rugby and other activities planned which will showcase our new building to all. Teams are being invited from all over Staffordshire to participate in this successful event. We are also hopeful that our Women’s team can arrange a friendly match with one of our neighbours and that we can arrange a four team Mini and Youth Tag Tournament on the same day. We currently field 3 Senior Men’s teams each week but are aiming to have a fourth team out this season so are always looking for new members no matter of age or capabilities. We train ever Wednesday at our Morgan’s Ground from 7.15pm so anyone interested should come along. Our First Fifteen have committed to gaining promotion this

season having narrowly missed this past year. Our Seconds won their Merit League and are adamant they will retain the trophy. Our Third’s also missed out on the Silverware but will not do so this time around. We are also programmed to have a number of Vet’s games this season which will help maintain the Spirit of Rugby in the Club. Our newly formed Women’s team have now almost 30 members and are keen to improve on that number before the start of the season. Training is in full swing every Monday at 7.00. The Aim of the Women’s team is obviously to win games but they are just as keen of becoming fit and having a sparkling social time. Just the same aims as all Rugby players. Qualified coaches are on hand to ensure that training is fun

whilst still passing on the knowledge of the game. All interested please come along or contact Rhiannon Greenaway on 07813 637418. Our newly restructured Mini and Youth Section is showing very encouraging signs of being well received by local schools and the community in general. We have provided after school sessions to 5 local primary schools which culminated in a Tournament at our Club for 12 teams of years 3 to 4. Coaching for years 3 to 6 started on Sunday the 30th June at 10.15 am and will lead to games from the start of the season in September. We shall continue our schools connection by offering our services to other primary’s in the area. We are hosting a 3 day Summer Camp from the 5th August which will be supported by Rugby Union Coaches. This will be a fantastic opportunity for all children in years 3 to 6 to gain an insight into the marvellous game of Rugby Union. There will be a charge for the camp but attendance for the 3 days will give free membership to Cannock RUFC. We at Cannock are now offering qualified rugby coaching for all immaterial of gender or experience. In addition we have facilities which are available for Community use. Whatever your needs please contact us on our website, facebook or by phone.

Tom’s Tip: Heel Pain? Heel pain is also known as ‘policeman’s heel’. The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis which is commonly referred to as a heel spur. The plantar fascia is a broad band of fibrous tissue which runs along the bottom surface of the foot, from the heel to the toes. Plantar fasciitis is a condition in which the plantar fascia is inflamed. This condition can be very painful and cause considerable amount of suffering. Symptoms include a dull ache which is felt most of the time with episodes of a sharp pain in the centre of the heel or on the inside margin of the heel. Often the pain is worse on first rising in the morning and after rest and is aggravated by prolonged weight bearing & thin soled shoes.

Type One • Biomechanical problems (walking abnormalities) are a major cause of plantar fasciitis. 48

• Tight plantar fascia (this is often caused by tight calf muscles). • Excessive flattening of the arch on weight bearing. • Excessive pronation (rolling in of the foot too much) • Obesity is a major cause of plantar fasciitis. Which is why this condition is common in middle aged and over weight adults. • A sudden increase in weight, such as pregnancy can also lead to plantar fasciitis. • A sudden increase in walking or a sporting activity can also be a contributing factor. • Standing for long periods at work. There are several conditions which may cause pain under the heel. Osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, fractured heel bone, bursitis, neuritis, oedema, circulatory issues, poly and fibromyalgia are but a few.
