Why Wait ! e ic o h c r e th o n a is ” “Private

With ever-growing waiting lists on the NHS for many procedures, and in some cases the procedure no longer being available, getting treated privately may be more affordable than you think. Our services are available to everyone, whether you have private healthcare or are paying for yourself, so next time you visit your GP with a problem that needs to be seen quickly, efficiently and with clinical excellence, don’t hesitate to ask to be referred to your local private Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital for your consultation and treatment. There are 3 ways of paying for your treatment here at the Nuffield:

Pay via medical health insurance You may have medical health insurance that is provided by your employer or you may have your own private healthcare policy. We have arrangements with many insurance companies, BUPA, AXA PPP, Aviva Healthcare, PRU Health, Cigna Healthcare, to name but a few that will allow you to choose to have your treatment here. This treatment is then paid for through your private medical insurance. However, it’s important that you liaise closely with your insurance provider before and throughout your treatment.

Paying for yourself Self-pay provides the opportunity to get the diagnosis or treatment 04

you need without the wait. You can pay for your treatment as a one off tailored, fixed payment even if you don’t have private medical insurance.

Pay by medical loan In some circumstances you can arrange an interest-free* personal medical loan to pay for your treatment. First Medical Loans, our recommended finance provider, offers you a different way to cover the costs of your treatment. They will help you work out what the best options are, enabling you to go ahead with your treatment without a delay or worrying about payment. With an interest-free* loan there is no deposit required and you simply pay back the cost of your treatment with 6 or 10 equal monthly payments, completely interest free. For more information on loans please visit nuffieldhealth.com or call 0845 618 5375 to speak to an advisor. In some locations and for some procedures we have agreements in place with local NHS authorities to provide treatments in our hospitals. Ask your GP about the availability of these under the NHS choices scheme – www.chooseandbook.nhs.uk Choosing us for your treatment means you are selecting state-ofthe-art healthcare, in a spotlessly clean environment, with the most professional nurses and dedicated specialists. We have a dedicated and personable matron, who ensures the highest of standards throughout the hospital. Over the last 12 months the hospital, which is located in 6.5 acres of extensive mature grounds, has undergone a £1 million refresh

programme creating a modern, comfortable relaxed environment with the installation of the latest safety features – such as advanced nurse call systems and refreshing the operating theatres. 2014 Calendar rd o ff ta S d n u ro A ls a Can t - A Cut Above The Res As well as the “Stafford and District Calendar” for 2014 Robert Cartwright has produced an additional calendar illustrated with his photographs of the local canal scene - “Canals Around Stafford”. For boat owners and those who enjoy a walk along “the cut” Stafford is well placed with the Trent and Mersey, the Staffs and Worcester and the Shropshire Union all within a few miles of the county town. Having photographed the canal scene for a number of years, Robert found it a difficult choice which scenes to include. From the twelve featured in the calendar he has selected three giving information about their location, along with one or two anecdotes…

The colourfull narrowboats

“For June I have selected a shot taken at a narrow boat rally held at Norbury Junction - a colourful line-up of boats showing off to good advantage the decoration characteristic of the traditional narrow boat, painted by artists who established their own unique style of design, with romantic scenes - “roses and castles” much to the fore and said to originate from Romany gypsies.

The lock picture at Great Haywood with the cafe in the background

“Great Haywood is another of my favourite locations. At the junction, the Staffs and Worcester branches off from the Trent and Mersey to pass under Brindley’s attractive roving bridge en route to Wolverhampton. The bridge is an ideal location for photography during the summer months, when holiday traffic is at its busiest. “A short distance from the bridge is Great Haywood Lock, which provides plenty of opportunity for good action shots. Such is the number of boats in both 08

The canal in the snow

directions that queues sometimes build up at the lock at busy times. My picture for the month of August shows a scene of much animation. In the background is the Lockhouse Restaurant and Café, a haven from where to watch the action, while enjoying some refreshment. “The third photograph from the calendar is called “Winter Moorings” - very appropriate for the month of December - a layer of ice and snow bringing a cold shiver, relieved only by the lingering Autumn tints that add a little warmth to the scene. It was taken from the iron bridge that spans the waterway at Great Haywood, looking in the Rugeley direction along the Trent and Mersey. On one occasion I was commissioned to photograph a traditional narrow boat is it came under the bridge. To ensure I captured the full side view of the boat I started to move back gradually - the end result being that I fell down into a ditch! The boat crew must have been as surprised as me - a very embarrassed cameraman! “June, August and December - a taster of the collection of photographs that will herald every month through 2014. I hope you will enjoy the scenes I have included, introducing you to familiar places and ones yet to be discovered.” Complementing the “Canals around Stafford” calendar is a collection of greeting cards illustrated with photographs of the canal scenes. All may be viewed on Robert’s website - www.ccstafford.co.uk - together with many designs of cards highlighting Stafford, Shugborough Hall, Doxey Nature Reserve, Cannock Chase and the surrounding countryside. The price of the calendar is £6.99

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted

up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when

we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Nuffield Health Wolverhampton removes time-limits on aftercare for patients, in unprecedented move for private healthcare. Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital is set to launch a unique service to local patients who require common surgical procedures. For the first time, patients choosing to have their care outside of the NHS will have no time limits placed on their aftercare following procedures like hip replacements or hernia repair. The Wolverhampton hospital, part of the Nuffield Health Charity, is launching the service in light of recent high profile concerns about patient care, both in the Independent sector and the NHS. Nuffield Health says it is simply making official its ethos of always putting patients first. However, the move is significant as currently providers of private healthcare offer only short term guarantees of up to 28 days to patients following surgical procedures. Following the widely publicised problems caused by PIP breast implants where women were left stranded and unable to afford 20

corrective surgery, and the recent Government review into bad practices in cosmetic surgery, Nuffield Health hopes the move will reassure patients who have lost faith in the healthcare system. The new initiative also provides assurance and guarantees about treatment and treatment prices, often hidden by clinics offering cut price healthcare, and who provide neither follow up nor assistance should anything go wrong. Tony Avery, Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton, said: “Our relationship with our patients does not end when they walk out of our hospital. Wherever possible, we will provide follow up advice, treatment and care for as long as our patients may need it. When it became apparent that PIP breast implants were potentially harmful, unlike many other hospitals, we took the immediate step of contacting our patients, offering assessment and removing and replacing implants in those where there was need. As we saw with PIP implants, the NHS does not have the resources to mop up after the private sector when something goes wrong after a month or even a year. We are absolutely confident that the service we offer here in

Wolverhampton is second to none and because of this we are able to make this guarantee to all patients having surgery in our hospital.” Patricia Lee, Chief Executive of Nuffield Health Hospitals, said: “We hope we are providing a product which will go some way to empowering patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare while removing some of the stress and uncertainty that visiting hospital naturally causes. People need to be reassured that if they need surgery that it is effective and safe and that the decisions they make are not going to trip them up further down the line because a hospital provider is more interested in taking their money than helping them get well.” The initiative is aimed at selffunding patients who are having traditional elective surgical procedures, including hip and knee replacements, weight loss surgery, cataract surgery and hernia removal.

rotherapy! d y H ?… b u T ot H a y h W and muscles and creating a relaxing sensation of weightlessness.

Everyone can benefit from hydrotherapy. Soaking in the hot, swirling water of a hot tub leaves you feeling both mentally and physically relaxed. The spa experience can also provide great fun for you, your family and your friends. There are three factors at work in a hot tub – heat, buoyancy and massage: 1. Immersion in hot water raises the body temperature and causes the blood vessels to dilate resulting in increased circulation. 2. The buoyancy of the water reduces the body weight by approximately 90% relieving pressure on joints

3. Sending a mixture of air and water through jet nozzles creates a massaging action. This “energized” stream of water relaxes tight muscles and stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller. Tony Goodwin of Leisureline Spas says ‘In both Eastern and Western medicine, doctors, trainers and physical therapists routinely prescribe hydrotherapy to alleviate the symptoms of muscle strains, sprains and other injuries. It can accelerate the healing process and relieve the pain caused by some types of arthritis and short-term injuries.’

Tutti Non Invasive Lipo at Instant results for those “Difficult to shift! fatty areas. Perfect for stomachs, thighs, and baby bulge How does it work? When the laser paddles are placed on the skin, the cold red laser beams penetrate the skin just deep enough to reach the layers of fat. When the light hits the fat cells, a rapid chain of events takes place. Firstly, pores form on the fat cells causing them to spill out. The water, glycerol and fatty acids move into the interstitial space beneath the fatty layer in the skin. Then further water, fatty acids and glycerol spill out. The adipocyte cells are therefore reduced in size.

These effects do not affect the neighbouring structures such as the skin, blood vessels or nerves. Clinically proven Independent clincal studies have shown non invasive lipo to be, in some cases, comparable to results achieved by liposuction. Ultrasound imagery shows up to 30% reduction in the fat layer depth after just one treatment. Additional treatments improve results further. Results can be seen immediately after each treatment as the fat cell contents are released. Light exercise post treatment can accelerate the removal of the released fat Safe and Painless Non invasive lipo is a low level laser diode system and therefore is painless and completely safe. It can be used on all skin types and body areas and you can return to normal activity immediately after treatment. Immediate results Results can be seen immediately after treatment. Typically a 2-4cm loss in abdomen circumference can be achieved with every treatment.

The Swan, Stafford

The Swan is a former 18th Century coaching inn which has been part of Stafford’s history for over 300 years. Situated in the heart of the historic town of Stafford, The Swan has recently undergone a stylish refurbishment inside and out, including new signage which has seen the hanging sign being reinstated after many years. The Swan offers accommodation of 31 en-suite bedrooms, an award winning brasserie/restaurant, two popular bars, a coffee shop and a beautiful Eco garden. The most recent award being the best restaurant and best coffee shop by the Pride in Stafford Business Awards 2013. On this wonderful sunny evening my partner and I had chosen to visit The Swan Brasserie in Stafford, and we were more than looking forward to eating great food, drinking and relaxing. Arriving at The Swan we were greeted by the Brasserie Manager Aiona who showed us to our table which was perfectly positioned in front of the huge bay window overlooking the town. The interior is simple and beautifully designed and there was a relaxing ambience throughout. Once seated and settled we were given the menu along with the wine list from which we ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio – San Antonio Italy to accompany our meal.

30

We began to browse the menu and both said we were spoilt for choice. We started with a sharing board of Fish platter as it looked too good to ignore, this consisted of potted mackerel, prawn toast, beer battered mussels, coley goujons, tartar sauce and rustic bread. Everything was fresh and tasty and got our taste buds working right away! For our main course my partner chose The Swan chicken Kiev served with lemon and black pepper wedges, griddled corn and watercress salad and I decided on 8oz sirloin steak served with roasted tomato, roasted field mushrooms, onion rings, chips and watercress and a serving of peppercorn sauce. When our main course arrived we both commented on the beautiful presentation. My steak was rich, juicy and cooked exactly how I liked it. My partner thoroughly enjoyed her chicken Kiev stating that the chicken was succulent. We both agreed that we would be having a dessert as the starter and main were so delicious. My partner was delighted as the dessert menu offers mini desserts, so she got to try two of her favourites being the lemon posset topped with vanilla cream and the seasonal berry Eton mess. I opted for the classic tart au citron finished with lemon sorbet. Again the presentation was spot on and the dessert was so good we were tempted to order another! The food we had this evening was great, the standards high, and we would gladly do it again!

The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, often abbreviated to the Staffs and Worcs (pronounced “Wusts”), is a 46 mile-long narrow canal that links the River Severn at Stourport in Worcestershire to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Haywood Junction. It is part of an intricate network making up the Waterways of Mainland Britain and provided one of the major routes of the canal age, when it supported a constant flow of coal boat traffic. Meandering through softly undulating Midlands countryside, the Staffs and Worcs skirts around the edges of Birmingham but never becomes truly urban. It connects at one end to the River Severn at the Stourport Basins, where the southern reaches run close to the River Stour-an important wetland habitat-before suddenly emerging into a stunning sandstone landscape at Kinver. At the northern end, in Staffordshire, it runs through the pine forest and open heathland of Cannock Chase. It passes the grounds of the Shugborough Estate, before merging with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Tixall Wide.

34

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

The Staffs and Worcs was a first generation ‘contour’ canal, opened in 1772 as part of engineer James Brindley’s idea to create a ‘Grand Cross’ of canals connecting the rivers Severn and Trent with the Mersey in the north and the Thames in the south. It suffered a decline in popularity with the advancement of more direct canals such as the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, which provided a more direct route between Birmingham and Bristol, in the early nineteenth century. However the company who had funded the canal’s construction, “The Company of Proprietors of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Navigation”, was able to remain competitive by increasing the hours when the locks could be used, before, in 1830, opening them 24 hours a day. Despite added competition from railways the company remained in business up until 1948 when British canals became nationalised via the Transport Act 1947. The canal had been run from the same Wolverhampton offices for over 170 years. Profits had though been steadily falling since the 1860s. In its later years the canal’s main trade had come from transporting coal from Cannock to a power station at Stourport. When this power station closed in 1949 the only commercial traffic came from a half-mile stretch between Autherley and Aldersley Junctions.

The Canal came very close to being closed by the British Transport Commission in 1959, but was saved by volunteer group the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Society. It was reclassified as a cruiseway nine years later and then declared a conservation area in 1969. The Severn and the Trent: two of Britain’s largest river catchments, are linked together by the Staffs and Worcs. The canal connects to several other canals along a northsouth route, creating a network. It links with the Trent and Mersey Canal and heads north to Stoke-on-Trent, Cheshire and Lancashire and east to the East Midlands. It merges with the BCN Main Line and the Stourbridge Canal in the Black Country and Birmingham, and meets the Shropshire Union Canal to carry on towards Chester and North Wales. Cutting a snake-like silhouette through twisting river valleys the Staffs and Worcs somehow maintains a serene atmosphere despite brushing up against the fringes of major towns and cities. During the week the canal can even feel somewhat neglected, adding to its charm and allowing opportunities for walkers to get close to nature. As well as being a popular residence for mallards, moorhens and herons, the waterways can also offer glimpses of far less frequently spotted species such as kingfishers and otters. To enjoy the full extent of the journey along the canal, narrowboat cruisers should allow four or five days for completing its 45 locks. Many hireboat companies advertise deals for seven day holidays which combine a cruise of the River Severn with the Staffs and Worcs. Alternatively the canal towpaths and adjacent fields and woodlands provide an enchanting and historical backdrop for cyclists and walkers to pass through and escape the traffic of the modern world.

paces Chase Arts In Public S Nearly 300 requests for named bricks have so far been received by the Committee of CHAPS since the most recent phase of the mining memorial in Hednesford was advertised. The memorial has been the focus of considerable attention and interest, both by those who had named bricks included and by many others who have an interest in the mining industry upon which our community was built since its dedication at a service led by the Bishop of Manchester just over one year ago. The mining memorial has the full backing and support of Hednesford Town Council and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust. Further bricks will be laid around the grass areas which surround the clock in front of Anglesey Lodge and will form part of the overall memorial which has a huge Davy Lamp as its focus.

CHAPS propose that work on the project will commence in October 2013, therefore it is the Committee’s decision that a closing date for receipt of completed applications will be August 31st 2013 after which no further requests will be accepted.

It is hoped that the time scale will give all interested parties the opportunity to make written applications and thereby ensure a further successful phase of the Memorial.

Anyone wishing to obtain application forms for named bricks, which will cost of £20.00 each, should contact Sheila Harding, Secretary of CHAPS. Sheila’s address for written correspondence is 18, Pinfold Lane, Norton Canes, Cannock, WS11 9PH, her phone number is 01543 275013 or she can be contacted by email: ashinnorton@btinternet.com

l-r: Mike Mellor, Mining Memorial Project Manager & Treasurer, CHAPS; Alan Pearson, Chairman, Hednesford Town Council; Derek Davis, Hednesford Town Council spokesperson on Heritage at the mining memorial in Hednesford.

The Committee wish to remind applicants that requests can include names of underground and above ground workers still living, they are not limited to those persons sadly deceased.

imited C Should You Form A L Recent tax changes have made it even more important to consider carefully, when running a business, whether it is best to trade as a Sole Trader or a Limited Company. As business advisors to many small local businesses this is the one of the most frequent questions we are asked. The reality is that there is no easy answer. Each situation has to be judged individually. As well as the obvious issues of tax and national insurance contributions (NICs), there are many other potentially relevant factors. In the early years of a business, the privacy and fewer administrative obligations of operating as a sole trader or partnership may be attractive. Business funds can be used with fewer restrictions than in an incorporated environment. This guide looks at some of the advantages and disadvantages of trading as a limited company. It is important to discuss your specific situation with us.

Possible advantages of incorporation • Incorporation normally provides limited liability. If a shareholder has paid fully for his or her shares, he or she cannot normally be required to invest any more in the company. .

40

• NICs) but strict company law formalities must be observed. • The national minimum wage does not apply to directors (as they are office holders) unless they have a statement of terms and conditions of employment. • Growing businesses can re-invest profits after a corporation tax charge of 20% (if profits are below £300,000), compared with 40% • for higher rate or 45% for additional rate tax paying sole traders and partners together with a 2% class 4 national insurance charge on profits over £41,450. • Corporate status is sometimes thought to add to the credibility or commercial respectability of the business. • The liability of executors acting for deceased shareholders, or of trustees, is clearly defined.

Potential disadvantages of incorporation • Formation of a company incurs legal and administrative costs, which may include new accounting records and possibly systems, new PAYE system, new business tax reference, new VAT registration, requirement to file a corporation tax return, new stationery etc. • Customers, suppliers and service providers must be informed of a change to limited company status. • A company’s accounts must be filed on public view with the Registrar of Companies.

• A company enjoys legal continuity - it can own property, sue and be sued.

• An Annual Return must also be submitted to the Registrar of Companies together with a filing fee of £40 (£13 if filed online).

• Shareholders can be paid in dividends (currently free of

• There is a severe penalty regime in force for failure to file on time.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

• The company will be taxed on its profits of each accounting period, as opposed to the income tax ‘current year’ basis for sole trader and partnerships. A company must file a corporation tax return. • Funds withdrawn from a company normally give rise to tax liabilities, whereas owners of unincorporated businesses can generally introduce and withdraw cash without tax implications. • Remuneration for directors is subject to both employee’s and employer’s National Insurance liabilities - currently up to 25.8%. • For example on a remuneration of £30,000 there is a NI liability of £5,754.43. Both the company and its directors are liable to NIC on many benefits in kind and a form P11D must be prepared for each director, whatever the level of earnings. • This can lead to extra work in filing a tax claim for reimbursed expenses etc. for which individual tax relief is available. • The ‘IR35’ legislation relating to personal service companies could be relevant, especially for IT contractors and other service providers who work for only one customer. • An individual has greater flexibility in dealing with trading losses. • A company director is more at risk of criminal or civil penalty proceedings, e.g. for late filing of accounts or for breaching the insolvency rules. There can be no substitute for a detailed analysis, and we are happy to help you in any way we can. If you require further information on the above issues or any other query you may have please do not hesitate to get in touch.

All Change! Last year was one of momentous change for us at Chase Grammar School. Starting with the name change itself. Having deliberated at great length over what our new name should be, once the decision was made, things moved really quickly and overnight we became Chase Grammar School. The logo took a little longer with many ideas thrown into the mix. What eventually emerged was our desire for something simple and timeless. With the design sorted we then moved on to precision colours for the various formats which modern technology requires. Finally we were in a position to start replacing all the old logos including those on the uniform. It has been a steady and evolving process and it was only when the new badges were on the blazers that we realised that we needed a new tie to go with the new logo. Alongside these changes our landscaping projects have been progressing and our new planting is now flourishing and blossoming. We are starting to look beautiful and we can see that it will only get better. However, aesthetics aside we are a school. Our job is to educate; to teach our children to learn. Our academic results show how well we do this. These have not changed in the last few years. They are consistently good and we are regularly top of the tables in Staffordshire. We may have a lovely family friendly atmosphere here but we are serious about education. Our expectations are high with a strong focus on basic skills. Without strong foundations a building cannot be secure; without being firmly rooted a tree cannot grow. The same applies to students. If they do not have the basics they cannot properly develop their understanding. Likewise the classroom environment is important. It is this that makes the difference. Our small class sizes ensure all children are known we pay particular attention to the individual and the curriculum is personalised to suit their needs. 50

Many parents may never have considered independent education as an option. Our parents are ordinary people who want the best for their child. They want them to have choices in life and these are best provided through a good education. Of course it is easy to get good results when you select the very best students to fill your places. We do not cream the top off each cohort of students. Not all our students are geniuses. However, we provide them with the best environment possible where those who wish to learn are able to do so. We encourage students to aim high and many achieve more than they could have imagined. Our high flyers this year will be those who have worked hard. Students like Ben who has an average IQ but is predicted to achieve the highest grades. He will not mind me telling you of the conversation we had in January when he wanted to drop a subject because he was feeling the pressure. I suspect that even the charming Ben resorted to some less than flattering comments about my unwillingness to allow him to do this. It was the first time that he had come across a real academic challenge and rather than allow him to give in I suggested he persevere and just keep going for the time being. In the end he produced some excellent work which will give him four top grade A Levels which will set him

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

apart from those who only have three. Behind what was probably seen as a harsh refusal was the fact that I know Ben and I had faith in his abilities. We have seen many students reach this point where the work suddenly gets difficult. Our job is to keep them going through that. I hope that one day Ben will recognise that it was the right decision. Then we have Katie; almost the perfect student. She is hard working and sets herself the challenges. A well behaved girl who gets stuck into everything. She is sensible, mature and one could not ask for much more from a young girl. She pushes to get the top grades and she will achieve some excellent results which will get her into the university of her choice. Again, Katie has average ability. It is the environment and the personal attention that has allowed her to find out just what is required to make her work better. The other day we took a phone call from a parent of a former student. She was one of those average ability students. She was a lovely young lady but she was determined and undoubtedly a hard worker. The call was to tell us that she had just achieved a First Class Honours degree in Law. Now that is not average and I cannot tell you how pleased we are for her.
