Help For Varicose Ve
Treatment for varicose veins is increasingly restricted on the NHS. We look at who’s likely to qualify and your options if you don’t. We’re all familiar with them – swollen, lumpy veins that are blue or purple and usually appear on the legs. In fact, varicose veins are very common, affecting around three in 10 adults and women more than men. They develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly. Normally the valves open to let blood through then close again to stop it flowing back, but if they become weak or damaged, the blood can flow backwards, collecting in the vein and causing that telltale bulging. Consultant vascular surgeons at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital, explain: “You’re more likely to develop varicose veins as you get older, especially if they run
in your family. You’ll also have an increased risk if you’re obese because excess weight puts more pressure on your veins, making the valves more inclined to leak. People who’ve had a deep vein thrombosis may be more likely to get them too.” Varicose veins can be painful or achy and the skin over the vein can be discoloured or inflamed. In the meantime, compression stockings, which encourage blood to flow up the leg, should help relieve pain but may not stop veins getting worse. The good news is that despite being unsightly, varicose veins don’t usually cause problems. The not so good news is that if they’re not causing problems, budget restrictions mean you probably can’t get them treated on the NHS. There are several techniques to treat varicose veins but not all are appropriate for every situation. Liquid sclerotherapy involves injecting a chemical into the affected veins, sealing them, but this is only suitable for very small veins. Foam sclerotherapy, which involves injection
under the guidance of an ultrasound scan, can treat larger veins but only as advised by your consultant. The traditional surgical treatment for bigger varicose veins is a technique called ligation and stripping, which involves tying off the vein in the affected leg and then removing it with a thin flexible wire. It requires a general anaesthetic but you’ll probably be able to go home the same day, though you may be off work for up to two to three weeks. A newer technique, VNUS Closure treatment removes varicose veins through ‘key-hole’ heating and closes the vein from the inside, using radiofrequency energy. Treating varicose veins this way is less invasive and painless than other treatments and has a much faster recovery time. If you would like further information about varicose vein treatments call us today for a swift consultation on 01902 793259 or visit our website at www.nuffieldhealth. com/wolverhamptonhospital Nuffield Health Group Awards • 2012 Laing and Buisson’s Independent Healthcare Award for Excellence in Risk Management • 2012 NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) level three • Winner of 2011 Health Investor Private Hospital Group of the Year • 2010 Laing and Buisson Award for Management Excellence • 2010 Health Investor Social Enterprise of the Year

Help for Heroes need
We need more volunteers to support us in your area. “It’s about the ‘blokes’, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It’s about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it’s about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It’s about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It’s about Ben, it’s about Steven and Andy and Mark, it’s about them all. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes.” When Help for Heroes (H4H) was launched in 2007, we just wanted to support those who had become injured while in the service of our country. This caught the public‘s imagination and became a focus for a huge demonstration of support by the public for the Armed Forces. The response the Charity received turned into a genuine national phenomenon and allowed us to grow from a single-mission charity whose sole aim was to provide a swimming pool at Headley Court to a service-delivery charity which is committed to providing 360° holistic support for life. Through a network of newly created Recovery Centres, Help for Heroes now acts as a central hub to those who have been wounded. We provide direct
services, or work with partner charities, to enable an individual to excel along their chosen life path. This is dramatically improving the longterm care for those who have been wounded and it is needed for life. Our challenge is to continue providing this support. The injuries won’t go away: Derek will always be a double amputee on prosthetic legs; Carl can now talk, but he will always be in pain; Richard is alive, but one day he may need a phone to talk to someone in the middle of the night about his experience. H4H supports veterans and serving personnel who have been wounded, injured, or become sick as a result of serving their country. Additionally we support their families and dependents as they care for their loved one, and adapt to the new challenges that they face. The money raised is used in all sorts of ways, from big projects like the H4H Rehabilitation Complex at Headley Court to the smaller provision of goodie bags for wounded personnel returning to the UK. Individuals and their families can receive financial aid from H4H to relieve some of the added stresses. Improvements to housing, paying for specialist equipment, travel expenses for family members visiting hospital and financial assistance for those forced into giving up work to care for loved ones are just some of the ways in which the Charity can and is helping our heroes.
Our holistic approach is all about ‘mind, body and soul’; providing a launch pad to life through education and employment; getting the wounded back to being fit and healthy through sport and activities; ensuring there is someone to turn to in difficult times or whenever encouragement is needed. H4H is taking the lead role in the delivery of the Recovery Centres in Catterick (Phoenix House), Colchester (Chavasse VC) and Tidworth (Tedworth House) and delivery of new facilities to enhance those already in existence in Plymouth. Our wonderful community of volunteers ensure as much of the money raised as possible goes directly to the ‘blokes’, the men and women of the Armed Forces. Our volunteers are very important to us – representing the public face of the Charity throughout the country and providing that personal link and support to the British public in their fundraising efforts. Volunteering with H4H is a hugely enjoyable and rewarding experience and by ‘doing your bit’ you really can make a difference.
If you are interested in volunteering with Help for Heroes please email Steve Parker, Central England Regional Coordinator at steve.parker@helpforheroes.org.uk or visit our web site at www.helpforheroes.org.uk/regional_team_coordinators 10

Care Of The Christmas A Christmas tree should be treated like any cut flower or plant being brought into a warm, dry atmosphere. Real Christmas Trees It is essential that cut trees should be fresh when purchased. The needles should not be dull and dried up. The branches should not be brittle. • If you are not putting up your Christmas tree immediately, store your tree in a cool, wind-sheltered spot • As soon as possible after this, stand the Christmas tree in plain water, not soil or sand, in a bucket or a water holding stand. • Try to place your Christmas tree in its water-holding stand away from any direct heat. Keep the Christmas tree stand topped up with water every day. Christmas trees may drink 2-3 pints of

water a day. It is essential to keep doing this as once the water drops below the trunk, sap will reseal pores in the tree’s bark and prevent the tree from taking up any more water. Potted Christmas trees these are Christmas trees that have been grown in the field and placed in pots especially for the Christmas period. These Christmas trees should be watered and cared for as for any house plant but do remember to place a tray under the pot to protect your carpet/floor. For all your real Christmas Trees this year call into Treeway Fencing.

at Value, Great re G s w o rr a H e h T
The Harrows opened its doors at the beginning of September after an extensive refurbishment throughout. Situated on the Stafford Road in Coven and with a new owner, The Harrows offers an excellent range of beers and wines, home cooked food and a very friendly atmosphere. With the night’s drawing in and the temperature dropping both my partner
and I said that we fancied some traditional home cooked English food, to which we both said “The Harrows” Upon entering we were greeted by Justine who was our wonderful waitress for the evening. We were shown to our table and given the menu with our drinks order also being taken. I was happy that they served my favourite “Peroni” on draught, so we both opted for this. The menu was exactly what we wanted and with starters priced from £3.85 -£4.50 and mains from £7.50 - £14.00 we both said what great value this was!! All food on the menu is locally sourced and all meat is from the well-established Roger Aston Butchers in Coven. Justine asked if we were ready to order to which we both nodded enthusiastically. For starters we

ordered the seafood cocktail and the deep fried brie, and for our main course we chose the 8oz sirloin steak with chips, mushroom, onion rings and salad and the beer battered cod with chips and minted peas. Whilst waiting for our meals we both said how the refurbishment was to a very high standard, with light walls, oak beams and wooden flooring throughout we were very impressed! Our starters arrived and tasted and were presented beautifully, these were polished off very quickly, and when our main course came we could not wait to tuck in. The steak was presented on a board rather than a plate which looked and tasted divine! The beer battered cod was so light and the fish flakes so tasty and we both commented on how much we loved the homemade chips.
We were both feeling very full once our main courses were finished and we both said that we were not sure if we could fit a desert in, however, once we saw the deserts board that thought went straight out of the window! We ordered the lemon cheesecake and the bread and butter pudding with custard, again the presentation was beautiful and all homemade and very tasty! Once we had finished eating we met Brendan Wordley the new owner of The Harrows who explained that’s the pub still remains a traditional English pub but with a modern feel, and how they are getting busy with new and old customers every day. The bar area was busy and buzzing on this evening which I thought was great being a cold, dark Tuesday night! Being a family pub Brendan added that the children’s park area outside had been very popular. When mentioning how much we had both enjoyed our meal Brendan explained that the menu changes every two weeks and that they also serve a Sunday Lunch. My partner and I said that we would definitely be returning soon and that we will recommend The Harrows to all family and friends. Open for Food at lunch times, Bar food 5.00pm-8.30pm, Lounge 6.00pm - 9.00pm, Sunday Lunch is served 12.00 - 4.00pm For a 3D tour of The Harrows just type in “The Harrows Coven” on Google maps. Memorial War Do HednesfByoRord es bert van der
Photos courtesy of Cannock Chase Council
The Hednesford War Memorial and Gates are located within the confines of Cannock Chase District, on Rugeley Road. The memorial was originally conceived to commemorate the dead of Hednesford from the First World War and was unveiled in 1922. Since then a further stone plaque has been added to the base of the structure to also pay tribute to the fallen from the Second World War and the Korean War. Passing through the main entrance double gates, which are fixed to two strong white stone piers and bear the name Hednesford War Memorial, the monument itself can be seen in the short distance ahead of you at the end of a tree-lined avenue. The ornate granite structure is situated on a prominent hill top and comprises a square tapering column rising about eight and a half metres in height above a large square plinth standing on a triangular base. The column is crowned by a square capital featuring carved crosses on each of the four faces. On the front face of the shaft itself is an inverted bronze sword placed between sprays of olive and palm. Below this, immediately above the column base, are four bronze laurel wreaths upon which the First World War fields of action are listed: France, Belgium, Gallipoli, Jutland, Italy, Serbia, Palestine and Mesopotamia. On each face of the plinth are cast bronze plates with the names of the 234 men who lost their lives in the First World War (1914-18) inscribed on them. The men are listed by surname and forename, or in some cases initials, e.g. BALL ALBERT, or BYFORD W. 34
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012
The front face bears the following poignant inscription:
TO THE GLORIOUS AND IMMORTAL MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN OF HEDNESFORD AND DISTRICT WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE CAUSE OF LIBERTY 1914-1918 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE The plaque commemorating the dead from the Second World War (1939-45) and Korean War (1950-53) was later added at the foot of the plinth. The names are inscribed in surname and initial form, with rank detail also provided for the latter war. The Remembrance Book of Hednesford and District War Memorial, written by Mac Wright to coincide with the raising of the war memorial, gives a wonderful account of Hednesford’s dutiful contribution to the British war effort and provides a detailed insight into how the monument eventually came to be. Plans to acknowledge the war heroes by way of a memorial first arose soon after the Declaration of the Armistice in November 1918. A meeting was held at the Drill Hall in Victoria Street, Hednesford and a citizens’ committee was formed, headed by the chairman of the Urban District Council, Mr John Smithurst. There was much discussion as to what form the memorial might take, with a public hall and a monument seeming to be of equal favour. It was in
fact the lack of unanimity that caused plans to be postponed and over a year went by without anything being done. It wasn’t until 31 May 1920 that another meeting was convened with the aim of arranging plans for the provision of a war memorial. It took place in the Soldiers’ Institute, Anglesey Street and was instigated by Councillor M. Wright. A new committee which incorporated the old one was elected, with Walter Webster chosen as Chairman, J. W. Parker treasurer and Wright secretary. The raising of a monument on Hednesford Hills was again just one of a number of schemes that were discussed over a series of subsequent meetings as a means of paying tribute to the fallen heroes. Other potential options, such as the erection of a public hall or the
conversion of the Old Pool site into a lake or park with an adjoining monument, were eventually deemed to be economically unfeasible and on 7 June 1920 it was decided: “That a public memorial be erected by public subscription, and such memorial take the form of a monument surmounted by a cross, and that the Marquis of Anglesey be approached for the necessary land on the hills.” Three months later the Marquis agreed to donate two acres of land and at a cost of £1,215 plans were agreed with Messrs. W. F. Fraley & Sons Birmingham for the supplying and erecting of the grey, granite monument. The Duke of Westminster’s gardener was behind its design. The raising of the money proved to be a problem and delayed the monument’s construction. This was a result of a coal industry
stoppage in September 1921 and a bazaar was held in December of that year to make up for the shortage. In November 1922 the war memorial was finally unveiled and by Princess Alice, Countess of Althone, and her husband the Earl of Althone no less. Fast forward to almost a century later, to 2007, and the monument has become listed as a Grade Two building, with plans to conserve, restore and clean the structure put into place by Hednesford Town Council. It is clear that the Hednesford War Memorial still holds a strong cultural significance to the people of Hednesford and the surrounding area, many of whom are the relatives of the brave soldiers who gave their lives during wartime. A Remembrance Sunday service takes place annually at the memorial.

Webbs Cooking is for every family a daily activity and the kitchen is now very much at the heart of the home. The cooker is obviously an extremely important item which must function well and be reliable, and increasingly must enhance the look and feel of the kitchen. Most people only ever purchase five or fewer cookers so it’s important to make the right choice. Manufacturers now cater for every taste with gleaming stainless steel models giving a professional modern feel and there are a large number of retro styled farmhouse look cookers in a variety of colours. Many people would love to have a full size range cooker but have always been limited by the space available to them. Today, however, there are lots of mini ranges to choose from, styled just like the full size models. The cooker market is fuelled by technological advances and engineering excellence. Today’s models are far more energy efficient
Cookers are often easier to keep clean too with new materials used and removable glass door ‘windows’ making for easier cleaning. Much of the innovation seen in today’s freestanding models has been transferred from that found in built-in ovens and hobs where new technologies such as pyrolytic cleaning and induction heating are often first introduced. Again with built-in ovens style is now considered as crucial and lots of new exciting colours and finishes are available. bands, dressed floats, costume characters and much, much more.
Probably the most spectacular Christmas Light Switch-on Event in Staffordshire with a full day of entertainment and fun for all the family. The day starts at 11.00am with the popular Father Christmas Parade when Santa arrives in town with his real live reindeer and a carnival procession with marching
Singing, dancing, competitions and demonstrations take place between 12.30pm and 4.30pm when the excitement starts to build for the big switch-on.
Following the parade the activities focus on Market Square where a 40ft stage and big screen are erected.
At 5.00pm the Christmas Lights are turned on and this is followed by a spectacular firework display launched from the roof of the
Guildhall Shopping Centre. As this is a totally free event, it is extremely popular, so visitors are advised to arrive early (and please leave pushchairs and buggies at home!).
Featuring in this year’s Father Christmas Parade are: Jacks of Frost
Ostriches
Two frosted stilt-walking, glam-dancing elves that will interact and melt with the crowd.
These wacky ostriches with riders on their backs run amuck through town chasing and pecking at those who get in their way.

Following on from the Christmas Lights Switch on event, the Guildhall Shopping Centre has an exciting and entertaining programme of events – not to be missed!
Sir Ralph Luvvie
Saturday 1st December (30 minute performances at 10.30am/12.00noon and 1.30pm). Eye-rolling, camp comedy, in a motorised armchair - once met, never forgotten...
Vinny
Saturday 8th December (30 minute performances at 10.30am/12.00noon and 1.30pm) 38
A silent clown with a gentle style, combining physical comedy, balancing feats, an array of juggling skills and uninhibited audience participation. Vinny makes the straightforward seem impossible and the seemingly impossible look easy. Vinny is a simple fellow who is easily confused, he can’t tie a shoelace and has a memory like a sieve but with a little help from his friends in the audience he is somehow able to perform astonishing feats of balance and co-ordination.

Edmond Tahl
Saturday 8th December (30 minute performances at 11.00am/12.30pm and 2.00pm) Edmond accidentally finds himself trapped in a perpendicular world of absurdity, where the bizarre is always close on his heels. Amidst a reality of swarming bees, low flying helicopters, squeaky prams, spaghetti western gun fights, ringing telephones, improbably large monsters, crashing glass, James Bond scenarios, etc. etc… he attempts to keep his composure. The show combines music, sound effects and mime, into an improvisational high energy comedy performance. Not to be missed!

al PA The Virtues Of A Virtu Calling all business owners... Are your business support tasks taking up far too much of your time? Do you need someone to take on secretarial support activities; but you don’t have enough to warrant employing somebody full time? Do you keep hearing about “social media” but have neither the time nor knowledge to manage it? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then help is at hand. Tao Business Solutions, the Cannock-based Virtual Assistant and social media management service, which was started by Cheryl Turner, can help you. We recognise that everyone’s needs are different when it comes to business support. Many small businesses acknowledge the need for admin support but the cost and commitment of employing a member of staff or calling in an agency temp is often out of reach, financially. “I moved to Cannock in 2010, and after spending 18 months very unhappy with my job I decided to do something about it and became self-employed”
explained Cheryl. “There are so many fantastic small businesses in the area that it seemed a natural progression to offer my secretarial and PA skills on a pay-as-you-go basis. I’ve got to know so many great people through networking and things are going from strength to strength”. With a vast wealth of experience, we are happy to help. We have a range of options available and can assist with secretarial duties such as mail merge, database management, digital audio transcription and all “run of the mill” typing services – we’ll even save you time with our corporate Christmas card writing service. We can also take on event coordination, project research, proof reading and article writing/press releases.
media minefields of Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn amongst others. We will work with you, either on a start-up basis to get you on the map, or on a monthly on-going arrangement, taking care of your day to day social media accounts on your behalf. If you’ve never taken the plunge and outsourced before then now is the time to start: as business guru Raymond Aaron famously said “If you don’t have an assistant, you are one”.
And it doesn’t stop there! With so much buzz surrounding social media and its positive impact on business communications, Tao Business Solutions can guide you through the social

Rob Taylor XV Marks The Spot By
It’s safer than the womb, sure-footed like an Olympic gymnast and - happily - comes in all colours. Rob Taylor has the scoop on the new Subaru XV. There’s no way around it: it’s orange. Tango orange. Ford Focus ST orange. Terry’s Chocolate Orange orange. And I like it. In a world of monochrome, pseudo-sophisticated German - and German-lite - cross-over vehicles, this new Subaru XV stands out like a sunset in the Sahara. But don’t think that because it’s the colour of a crayon, it’s a cartoon car - it’s not. In fact, it’s a very serious car indeed. With a permanent four-wheel drive system, the XV is more stable and sure-footed in all weathers than a mountain goat; a five-star Euro NCAP rating makes it 46
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012
the safest car in its class too. Preferring function over fancy it has all the hallmarks of a classic Subaru. If you care about child safety, listen up: Subaru’s newest SUV scored the highest possible marks in child occupancy protection tests at Euro NCAP. And legendary Japanese build-quality means it’s capable of shrugging off the rigours of family life too. You might even say it’s more durable and robust than a child’s Tonka toy, hence the colour. The 2 litre diesel horizontally-opposed ‘Boxer’ engine is tractable at low-revs, gutsy if pushed, but sophisticated enough to waft you quietly around the city suburbs in style, on some of the funkiest alloys I’ve ever seen on an SUV. Not flashy, nor incongruous, they enliven the side-profile of the vehicle enormously. Of course, you may be loathe to take the XV off-road for fear of scratching them, but that’ll be the only thing stopping you, as with considerable ground-clearance, a Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and a Limited
Slip Differential, the XV has other off-roaders licked. In fact, a leisurely day spent off-roading is far less dangerous than wandering alone and unsupervised into the cavernous boot-space. Your family will be left filling out missing-person reports if you do.
Care Of (ETCo) scheme. Free with every new vehicle, this three-year deal offers cover for everything from dent and alloy wheel repairs to an accident management service and is worth £700 in itself. Never before has a trip to a car dealer promised to be so painless.
SE specification finds this model boasting dualzone air conditioning, a rear-view parking camera, iPod connectivity, leather seats, cruise control and privacy-glass in the rear. And this is on top of an already generous list of standard kit. Pretty good so far, so let’s crunch some numbers.
So the numbers add up and Subaru has a product and package which makes sense to the left - more logical - hemisphere of your brain, but, you’ll be thinking, can I love the XV? Is it a case of Subar-oooh or just not for you?
There’s 147 bhp to play with and 350 Nm of torque between 1,600 - 2,400 rpm; 0-60 mph arrives in 9.3 seconds, top speed is 120 mph; it’ll touch 50.4 mpg on the combined cycle and knocks out just 146 g/km of Co2. And prices start from £21,295 (model tested: £26,295).
Well, having spent a week with it, I’m happy to report that I’m very impressed. With striking looks and a regal driving position allied to serious overtaking punch and fine handling manners, the XV proves itself to be extremely versatile.
Subaru now offer one of the most comprehensive aftercare packages as well, with the Everything Taken
It appeals to both ‘XY’ and ‘XX’ buyers alike. And it doesn’t take a genius to work out that kids will love it too. Just look at the colour. 01952 321334 | WWW.STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK.CO.UK

le People
up For Sing ro G ip sh d en ri F rt ta Fresh S Fresh Start has been in the Cannock and Tamworth area for the past 3 years and has reached many single people over 50 looking to kick start their social life after bereavement or divorce. We meet weekly for a social event and organise a variety of events from weekends away to theatre trips, dancing, National Trust Visits, parties and BBQ’s, Ten Pin Bowling, Miniature Golf, Indoor Bowls, walking, canal trips and much, much more, including a Dinner Club for the more discerning diners. We are a not for profit group which has been fortunate to obtain two grants in the past year, one from Staffordshire County Council and one from Heath Hayes and Wimblebury Council which have been used for the good of the group.
We meet every Monday at the Barns Hotel, Huntington and the Lea Marston Hotel, Kingsbury on a Thursday night and have a growing membership. One of our members said about the group: “I have been a member of Fresh Start Friendship Group for single people over 50 for just over 15 months. My husband died leaving me a widow over 4 years ago and I struggled to come to terms with his loss even though my two children were very helpful. I had retired from work so had no other social outlet. We had been man and wife for 34 years and we did everything together. After his loss I found it difficult to find what to do with my life, my children were really good to me and I was invited out with friends and their husbands but always felt that I was the odd one out and going out became difficult. I happened to see an advert
for the group and I thought it may give me an outlet and a way to get involved in something different and meet new friends. I went down for the first week and found a very friendly group of people who seemed to have gone through similar experiences to me and soon became a regular member and attended many events. I can’t thank the committee enough for their hard work and dedication to making sure that everyone in the group gets to benefit from being a member.”

onth: M e th f o ip T p o T ’s m o T Bunion (Bunionette) Tailors
however this condition is commonly thought to be due to shoe fashion. Wearing narrow-toed shoes and high heels may accelerate the formation of the tailor’s bunion due to the extra pressure put on the outside of the foot.
A tailor’s bunion (little toe bunion) is very similar to a bunion of the big toe joint. s the name suggests this condition was named because a tailor would sit with their legs crossed allowing the outside of the foot to rub against the floor causing irritation and inflammation (swelling). The incidence of a tailor’s bunion is much higher in women than in men. There are genetic factors and biomechanical factors involved,
Conservative treatment includes using anti-inflammatory oral medications or an injection of medication and local anaesthetic to reduce this swelling. The podiatrist may request x-rays but in most cases you can diagnose the condition by a visual examination. The podiatrist may remove any corns or calluses that develop due to the tailor’s bunion. It is common to have a corn on the outer aspect of the tailor’s bunion due to friction pressure.
Slip on Orthotics/insoles will help to correct any underlying biomechanical problem to and prevent the condition from progressing. Footwear should be changed to broad fitting shoes with a
minimum heel. An elastic gel sleeve can be applied for pain relief. The 1st or 5th toes should not be placed under undue stress in footwear. There are tailor’s bunion alignment splints you can use to correct the condition although this product was initially designed to be used after tailor’s bunion surgery; however, gently stretching the soft tissues around the small toe joint helps prevent the need for surgery. Surgical correction is the final option available. See a Podiatrist/chiropodist for an assessment & treatment if you’re desperate, or call Tom Casey on 07828 613615
