Pension Changes and the fallout
Following my feature in the last edition regarding the recent pension changes I have, over the course of the last 2 months, been contacted by several readers regarding their circumstances, so I feel it may be beneficial to explain further exactly how the changes have affected different sectors of the pension market.
and now prohibit cash equivalent transfer values (CETVs).
I will start by looking at public sector pensions that include the following employers:
The only exception to this is the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) as this is a funded scheme that means you are able to obtain a cash equivalent transfer value. On saying that, what we are finding is that the amount being offered as a CETV is way below the levels we would expect or indeed recommend for transferral, as they do not offer
Police, NHS, HMRC and Teachers. All of the above pension schemes are unfunded and therefore, following the pension freedom changes in April 2015, the Government changed their rules 4
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2017
What do we mean by unfunded? Well these are, in the main, government pensions where the pension payments are covered by income received in the form of tax and national insurance. The biggest exponent of this is the State Pension, which probably explains why the government keeps extending the State Pension age – and it is because of this that it has been mooted that the children of today will not receive their State Pension until they are in their mid-70s, which is a daunting thought for the kids of today.
fair value. Whilst we are on the subject of Local Government pensions at retirement, you now have the opportunity to exchange a larger amount of your pension to give you additional tax-free cash, however, the commutation factor used is 12 to 1. To put that in simple terms, it means that for every £1 of income you give up you receive £12 in tax-free cash. This is not generous and in many cases you will receive far better value for money over the medium to long term by not taking the maximum amount of tax-free cash. If in doubt, always consult with an Independent Financial Adviser.
While public sector pensions are very limited in their options most other funded final salary pension schemes are offering attractive transfer values that, depending on your circumstances, can be life changing as you will see from the action taken by the clients I met recently. CASE STUDY: Mr and Mrs R I met Mr and Mrs R after being introduced to them by Mrs R’s brother; he has been a client of mine for some time. They have both worked for Jaguar Land Rover Mrs R for 30 years and Mr R for 22 years. They had, prior to meeting with me, contacted the JLR Pension Scheme to request CETVs and the values quoted surprised them to say the least. Mrs R who is approaching her 58th birthday has accumulated a deferred pension of £23,017.70 per annum, payable on her 65th birthday; she was offered a transfer value of £668,776.94, should she decide to transfer away from the scheme. Mr R who is 62 in May has a deferred pension of £14,649.63 per annum payable on his
65th birthday; he was offered £400,319.32 should he decide to transfer away from the scheme.
take as for both of them “holidays” are the love of their lives.
Their personal circumstances are a little different as Mr R still enjoys work however Mrs R yearns to retire and would stop working immediately if financially viable which, dependent upon her needs and objectives, may well be viable. Once we had gone through an in-depth analysis of their circumstances it transpires that to live comfortably the household income required is £3,000 per month which means, whilst Mr R is working he contributes £2,000, Mrs R would need £1,000 per month initially.
I must highlight that we are able to utilise the tax free cash as part of an overall tax planning strategy as they have savings elsewhere although, at some stage in the future, they may well need to replenish them from their pension fund.
With Mrs R’s transfer value being in excess of £600,000 we could utilise the tax-free cash as part of an overall tax saving strategy, take £14,666 per annum with no liability to income tax thus giving a net monthly income of £1,222 - slightly more than required but worth having to fully utilise her personal allowance. This income would be drawing less than 2.3% from the overall fund which is below the investment returns that we have achieved for our clients over the medium to long term. Although at this stage I must point out that past returns are no guarantee of future returns. Mrs R decided there and then that her life was going to change and as soon as we could arrange to proceed with the transfer she would hand in her notice and retire immediately. Mr R on the other hand wants to continue working for another 12 months however a few days after our meeting he was reprimanded for the time he likes to take off for holidays over the Christmas period and he came out of that meeting with the mind-set that if they are not happy he may well bring his retirement forward and bow out gracefully. From an adviser’s point of view it is so refreshing to meet people and totally change their lives as, prior to our meeting, Mrs R accepted that she would have to work until her 65th birthday, whilst for 4 years her husband would be retired whereas now she is retiring before him and has already started planning the vacations they will
The main difference now is that Mr & Mrs R have total control of their future and whilst this suits their circumstances, for others it can be daunting as being able to just receive a yearly pension with no input that is 100% guaranteed for the rest of their life is more suitable. I see many clients with this dilemma and my advice has always been “if in doubt, don’t” - make sure that before taking any action you are 100% comfortable in what you are doing. Should you have a final salary pension and want to find out what options are available to you please do not hesitate to contact us and we will gladly advise you. Initial meetings are at our expense.

Hearts, Minds and Souls NEW EDUCATION PROGRAMME WITH INDIVIDUALS IN MIND
With a long established reputation for developing well-rounded individuals, Tettenhall College Preparatory School continues to build on excellence with the upcoming launch of its exciting new Boat Programme. Designed with the individual in mind, the Boat Programme aims to deepen and widen the experiences open to all pupils from Years 3- 6 in its Preparatory School. New subjects include Latin, Mandarin, philosophy and engineering, to name a few, whilst extra support in reading, handwriting, mathematics and literacy is available for those who need it. This innovative offering has been developed by the enthusiastic staff team, who are keen to offer their pupils more individual and tailored routes to success. “With 45% of Key Stage 2 pupils achieving higher or significantly higher than expected results in English and 34% accomplishing the same in mathematics in 2016, the success of our pupils far exceeds the national expectation of 16%” Mr Simon Wrafter, the Head of the Prep school, explains. “However, we understand that developing our pupils as individuals and opening up opportunities to broaden their skills is as important as academic success – particularly since we are a non-selective school.” English, reading and mathematics are at the heart of the curriculum and are taught daily throughout the morning whilst our science classes, taught in the modern Prep School laboratory, now include an engineering focus. Despite the variety of opportunities available, core subjects continue to account for 60% of the curriculum at the School. The Boat Programme will focus on the heart and soul of the individual and thus, through a more tailored offering, every pupil will be able to more fully experience our three pillars of education – developing academic minds, active hearts and enriched souls. The Preparatory School is holding an Open Morning on Friday 5th May, where more information will be available about this exciting new offering as well as an opportunity to discuss your child’s future education with the team at the School. 6
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2017
In other developments at the School, the go ahead has just been given for a brand new state of the art Sixth Form Centre, improved Library facilities and brand new squash courts which are all part of the School’s development plan for the next five years.

Competition
Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by Northern Ballet One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by Northern Ballet on Tuesday 30 May at 7:30pm. Northern Ballet was set up in 1969 and has since grown to become one of the best-loved dance companies in the world. They take inspiration from an eclectic mix of classical dance, theatre, popular culture, literature and opera to develop new and original productions and to create new interpretations of popular classical ballets. Divided by a barbed wire fence, Bruno doesn’t understand anything about where Shmuel lives, or who he is. To him, he’s just a new friend – a boy wearing a pair of striped pyjamas. As this unlikely friendship blossoms against the backdrop of the unthinkable events of World War II, Bruno’s childlike curiosity leads this poignant story to a devastating conclusion. The UK’s foremost narrative ballet company, Northern Ballet, present this heart-breaking story through dance for the very first time. Boy In The Striped Pyjamas runs from Tue 30 May - Wed 31 May and tickets can be bought in person at the Box Office, by calling 01902 42 92 12 or online at grandtheatre.co.uk.

SI Cannock & District NATIONAL MEMORIAL ARBORETUM To celebrate International Women’s Day some members of SI Cannock & District visited the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. International Women’s Day (March 8th) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The National Memorial Arboretum is the UK’s year round centre of Remembrance. The 150 acre site is a living growing tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our county. The Arboretum has over 300 memorials and 30,000 maturing trees. The members were warmly greeted by Alan & Malcolm their guides for the day. The day began by attending ‘The Daily Act of Remembrance’ at 11am in the Millennium Chapel which included a two minute silence. The members were split into two groups joining their guides who drove them in buggies to visit the vast amount of memorials. During the morning session visits included the Far East Prisoners of War Memorial Building which is close to The Sumatra Railway memorial. After this the members stopped at numerous memorials on the tour, where guides explained the history in detail providing the group with a greater insight about the individual exhibits.
After a two course lunch members joined their guides to continue visiting several more memorials. The four which the members chose to visit were the Shot at Dawn Memorial, Soroptimist International Garden, The War Widows Rose Garden and their last stop was the iconic Armed Forces memorial. All members found the tour to be informative, thought provoking, at times emotional and an appropriate way to mark International Women’s Day. More information about Soroptimist International is available on the website www.sigbi.org and about Cannock Club on www.sigbi.org./cannock-and-district or on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SICannock If you would like to come along to one of our meetings t:07971 494510 or email s.i.cannock@outlook.com

DRY VERGE
No strong wind blowing off tiles
British Standards state that no reliance should be placed on the shear strength of mortar used in the filling and bedding. Mortar will eventually crack, in contrast, Dry Verges are mechanically fixed and each unit individually screwed. With the next unit interlocking giving extra strength and hiding the screws. This offers the maximum protection against strong winds and water penetration, giving you long term protection with a neat, attractive appearance and with none of the ongoing costs associated with Mortar.
Prevents entry of birds and large insects
WE COVER ALL ROOFING INCLUDING: NEW ROOFS/ FLAT ROOFS - Rubberised one sheet flat roofs – one sheet – No joints - Half the time to install compared to traditional felt or tar – Comes with a 20 year guarantee. EAVES PROTECTION SYSTEM – We cut back the rotten felt and insert the PVC Eaves Protection System
RIDGEFAST Ridgefast can be used with all standard ridges, tiles and slates. Ridgefast is more capable of standing up to the worst that the British weather can throw at it.
IT’S FAST Ridgefast is the fast and easy way to install a ventilated dry ridge. This unique system is designed to simply attach along the ridge and is far quicker than Mortar bedding.
IT’S UNIVERSAL Thanks to a unique fixing system Ridgefast can be used with all standard ridges, tiles and slates. Ridgefast is easily moulded to the shape of any tile or slate and the grey colour of the side flashing replicates a mortar finish.
The new Dry Ridge System is 100% UPVC and has been British IT’S VENTILATED Standards tested against warping, Provides a minimum ventilated area of 5000 sq.mm. per discolouring and cracking linearmetre and is suitable for ventilating flat tiles. You can use Ridgefast with ridge and gas terminals.
IT’S MAINTENANCE FREE The dry fixing method offers considerable advantages, not only in the speed of installation, but also in longterm economy and safety.

NEW DEMENTIA SCULPTURE IN HEDNESFORD PARK THE SCULPTURE SITS ALONG THE ROUTE OF THE `FORGET-ME-NOT WALK People living in Cannock Chase District will be able to view a new woodland sculpture as part of a local dementia friendly initiative in Hednesford Park. The new sculpture is being created by Robot Cossey, an artist from Wolverhampton who is well known for his timber sculptural works and the artist who created the recent woodland sculptures in the park. The design includes a collection of forget me not flowers with a ladybird and is situated at the park entrance off Victoria Road. The forget me not flower is the recognised emblem for dementia friendly communities and hospitals, and the symbol provides one of the many ways of identifying patients which may require extra support. The sculpture sits along the route of the `Forget-me-not walk` which involves a short walk around the park. Dementia friendly walks take place every Monday between 11am and 1pm – meeting at the park Pavilion. The project has received funding from the Cannock Chase Dementia Action Alliance. The Alliance, part of the Staffordshire Dementia Alliance was established in July 2016. Its aim is to create an improved and safe environment for those living with dementia, their families and carers. Further initiatives are also taking place in Hednesford Park between 14 - 20 May as part of this year`s Dementia Awareness Week. As part of this week, the Alzheimer’s Society is asking everyone across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to unite against dementia. The first of the Dementia Friend Training Treasure Hunts will be on Sunday 14 May and Monday 15 May. Volunteers from Upper Moreton Farm have already made willow forget me not flowers which will be used to decorate the route during Dementia Awareness Week. Over the next few weeks, the Friends of Hednesford Park will be making more willow forget me not flowers with the Trinity Church`s dementia pop-in group and the local Girls Venture CORPS Air Cadets. Councillor Muriel Davis, Cabinet Leader for Health & Wellbeing, said: “Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer. In Cannock Chase alone, there are approximately 1,184 people living with dementia and this figure is expected to increase to just over 2000 by 2030. “That`s why, it`s great to see the dementia friendly work being delivered in Hednesford Park. By raising awareness of dementia it will offer help and understanding for those people living with dementia. 26
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2017
“There are plenty of ways you can support the Dementia Awareness Week by either joining a Dementia Friends session or taking part in an event near you”. Councillor Christine Mitchell, Leader for Culture and Sport, said: “This sculpture is a great addition to the park and compliments the recent woodland sculptures that have already been created. It is positioned at a lower height to the others so that people in wheelchairs and on mobility scooters will have the opportunity to enjoy it too. It`s great to see our parks being used to support people living with dementia and I hope people enjoy the walk”. County Councillor Alan White, Cabinet Member for Health, Care and Wellbeing said: “Dementia is one of the biggest challenges facing the county, so it is good to see so many activities taking place and the community coming together to help support people and raise awareness of the condition. “As a county council we are committed to ensuring residents have access to the support they need to lead as fulfilled and independent lives for as long as possible. This is why we are doing everything we can to ensure people can get access to the support they need in their local community.” Andy Williams, Committee Member for The Friends of Hednesford Park explained “The Friends of Hednesford Park have been registered with the Dementia Action Alliance since 2014 and started our weekly Monday Dementia Walks in July 2015. This year we aim to raise awareness with our young people and will be doing lots of Dementia Friend Training Treasure Hunts. All of those who take part and pledge support to raise dementia awareness will get a free Alzheimer’s badge and forgetme-not windmill.” For more information about the dementia work taking place in Hednesford Park, contact Lynn Evans on 07855 099353. To find out more about the dementia friendly work being delivered across the District, contact the Council’s Partnerships Team on 01543 464635 or email communications@cannockchasedc.gov.uk

Heleniums MY FAVOURITE PLANT The great garden writer Christopher Lloyd, when asked what his favourite flower was, replied: “the one I’m looking at now”. It’s that way with me with Heleniums; all are beautiful in their own right, all are equally easy to grow and all do a great job in the border, be it a 15inch (38cm) edger to a 6-footer (180cm) at the back. Heleniums come in all shades and variations of Yellow, Orange and Red. The only thing to remember is that Heleniums need good sunlight to obtain the best colours. Yellow varieties will perform in some shade, but the reds need 3 or 4 hours of good sunlight to colour up properly. Left in the shade they will be pale orange and yellow.
best is the 2ft (60cm) tall Mardi Gras with its jolly masses of flower and a strong constitution. Also, highly recommended is the bright red Red Army and Fata Morgana a lovely variety with upswept petals in apricot with orange undersides making a beautiful two-toned effect in the garden. Mid height Heleniums (3ft / 60cm tall) are great for the middle or back of borders (depending on the size of border). The most popular is Sahin’s Early Flowerer but a better choice is the magnificent El Dorado with very large golden yellow flowers. Hot Lava is a brand new one that is later to flower but very bushy.
The common name, “Sneezeweed”, comes from the use of dried and powdered leaves as medicinal snuff to cure colds and bronchitis. Don’t try this at home! Heleniums are toxic and harmful if ingested. In Germany, they are called “Sonnenbraut” – “Sun Brides”; far more romantic! All Heleniums are a great source of nectar for bees and butterflies which will flock to the flowers with glee.
Gardeners often think of Heleniums as late-flowering, adding colour to the August and September garden, but with careful selection of varieties and regular dead heading and watering, you can have Heleniums in bloom from mid-June until the beginning of November without having to resort to forcing plants in a greenhouse. The short varieties are usually earlier to flower and with dead heading will go on longest. Probably the 30
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2017
Tall varieties (4-6ft / 120-180cm) might need a stake in an exposed site but I rarely need to resort to this as the stems are very thick and strong. Amber is the best of newer varieties with masses of flower on upright plants. You can’t go wrong with the 4-5ft old variety Kanaria with its canary yellow flowers. For something showier the picotee-edged flowers of Fiesta stand out well at the back of the border. Heleniums mix well with lots of garden plants. I particularly like them with grasses in late summer – short moor grasses (Molinia) or taller Silver Grass (Miscanthus) and Feather Grass (Pennisetum). Monarda (Bergamot) and Phlox make great companions as all require similar growing conditions. There are a few simple rules to follow to get the best out of heleniums: water whenever dry even in spring or autumn; deadhead short varieties regularly; cut down the stems to just above the ground in winter and only divide or move them in spring not autumn. Follow these and heleniums should come back each year to brighten up your summer and autumn garden. An estimated 20,000 species of ants exist in the world. All ants live in colonies and have a structured social system, with different castes, worker, soldier, queen and drone - all of which carry out specific tasks for the colony.

Only the queen and the males she mates with on her maiden flight will reproduce. All the workers and soldiers are sterile females. Queen ants are the largest ants. They have wings and their purpose is to lay eggs. The queens can live up to 30 years. Black garden ants are the most commonly seen ants in Britain, building nests under garden stones and paving slabs, as well as occasionally turning up in our houses in the summer. However, they are probably most famous for their mating flights, when swarms of winged queens and reproductive males take to the skies during the hot and humid summer weather. The males subsequently die but the queens go on to establish new colonies. Ants can lift 20 times their own body weight. Ants don’t have ears. Ants “hear” by feeling vibrations in the ground through their feet. If you need any treatment against ants in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196.

Tile Choice sponsor Celebrity Football match at Walsall HELP RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHARITIES
Tile Choice is proud to be sponsoring a Celebrity Football match at Walsall Football Club on Saturday 13th May 2017. We are going to help raise money for Compton Hospice which wishes to celebrate its 35th anniversary and another local charity, Smile for Joel. A Black Country mother, Suzy Richards, whose son, brother and father were killed in the Tunisia terror attack, has set up Smile for Joel with her surviving son Owen to support other victims of mass atrocities. Joel, the son that was killed, had strong links with Walsall Football Club.
Rotary Horse Race Night The spring is an important time of the year for followers of Steeplechase Horse racing with The Cheltenham Festival in early March and The Aintree Grand National on 8th April. The Rotary Club of Cannock thought they should join by hosting something local and organised a ‘Race Night’ at The Barns restaurant.
Essentially, Sellebrity Soccer organise two full celebrity teams for the game, typically well known Soap and Reality Show stars such as Katie Price, Shayne Ward, EastEnders actor Jake Wood, Callum Best, Joe Calzaghe & Wayne Bridge have already been confirmed. Others include call centre boss Nev Wilshire, Soccer AM Franky Fryer and X Factor singer Nicholas McDonald. Tickets, which are on sale now are just £10 for adults and £5 for children, which can be purchased from Banks’s Stadium Ticket Office on 01922 651416 or by visiting www.eticketing.co.uk/walsallfc We are welcoming everyone to attend and help support our team and cause in raising money for this worthwhile charity, which has touched so many lives.
from France and Germany for a fellowship weekend in Liverpool, the year ends with a themed Garden Party. If you wish to find out more about the Rotary Club of Cannock, please email secretary@cannockrotary.co.uk or visit the club’s web site at www.cannockrotary.co.uk
Each race was sponsored and on the night Rotarians and their guests had the opportunity to be a race horse owner, albeit only for the night by purchasing a race horse for just £5. There was also the Rotary Tote for those who wished to place a bet on the races. There were some 8 races on the night, the entry cost also included a meal. This charity event which was held on Thursday 23rd March raised over £550 which will now be used to support local Charities and good causes. The Rotary Club of Cannock has a number of events planned for the rest of the Rotary year which ends in July, these include a Ladies Night at Brocton Hall Golf Club, a charity golf day at The Chase Golf Club and in May some 40 members and partners are meeting up with fellow Rotarian friends

An International Experience in Cannock A SCHOOL WHERE STUDENTS FIND THEIR PASSION FOR LEARNING Hidden away in Cannock town centre is an international school, where students think for themselves, discover their passion for learning and thrive in a happy and friendly environment where each individual is valued. Chase Grammar School has been educating children of all backgrounds since 1879 and combines high academic standards with the development of personal character. Children from ages 2 – 11 enrol as day students at Lyncroft House Prep School, which shares the grounds and specialist facilities with Chase Grammar School. Classes are small and the children receive specialist art, music, dance, drama and sport lessons each week alongside a traditional primary education. Students learn French from age 5, Mandarin from age 7 and add German and Latin from age 11. In the senior school we prepare students for GCSEs, A Levels and entry pathways to universities and apprenticeships. Chase Grammar is highly ranked for academic results (100% A*-C at GCSE; 80% A*-B at A Level), showing that our approach to learning, in which we focus upon the development of character as much as knowledge, really works. As well as taking students from across the county, the school also welcomes students from around the world and there is a thriving boarding community. Local students are all members
of one of our three Houses (named after inspirational local people: education minister Jennie Lee; inventor and chess master Vernon Parton; and physician Frank Tylecote) and are invited to take part in the wealth of after-school and weekend activities and clubs, as well as have the opportunity to try boarding, to prepare them for independent living at university and beyond.
Chase Grammar is an independent fee-paying school, but because we are supported by the Achieve Education Group, we are able to offer significant scholarships and bursaries to talented students. The students benefit from small class sizes, a broad academic curriculum, opportunities to study a range of modern and classical languages, a full programme of enrichment activities, the support from tutors who help them to set targets and meet with them as individuals, and an international environment where cultural differences are celebrated and students become global citizens who will want to give back to their own communities. The school aims to educate well-rounded individuals who have an international outlook and the compassion, courage and confidence to excel in any walk of life. Why not visit the school to see how your child might thrive?

Restaurant Review
Indian Cuisine Situated in the countryside in a beautiful barn conversion in Featherstone near Wolverhampton, The King’s Repose is a high quality and highly recommended Indian restaurant. With hosts Lee, Misbah and Monseur who have ran the successful restaurant since 1996, it is no wonder that they have many returning customers and new customers week in week out. In August 2016, The King’s Repose made it to the Grand Final of the Tiffin Cup, which was held at Bellamy’s Restaurant in the House of Commons. They were nominated by Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire. The Tiffin Cup is a competition which celebrates culinary diversity and is held each year to find the best South Asian restaurant in the country. The competition final was judged by Ainsley Harriot. The Kings Repose was one of the eleven national finalists in the competition. Unfortunately The King’s Repose didn’t place first, second or third in the finals, however they were named the best South Asian restaurant in the West Midlands! What a great achievement to shout about! Each dish at The King’s Repose has its own individual flavour and aroma from the herbs and spices specially prepared by the Master Chef Misbah. Using only the best ingredients with a wonderful combination of subtle flavours and tastes, blending fragrant and exotic spices from the Indian continent This evening my partner and I were delighted to be returning to the award winning, King’s Repose in Featherstone.

After parking on the free secure car park to the front of the restaurant we stepped out of the car and could immediately smell the beautiful aromas. We were greeted at the entrance by Monsieur who remembered us from our previous visit, and were taken through to the bar area where we both ordered a Cobra beer each and began to peruse the menu. With so many tempting dishes to choose from we didn’t know where to begin. For our starters we decided on Sheek Kebab and Chingri Fry along with poppadums and dips. For our mains we opted for a Murgh Talibul- a thick sauce of Coriander, Chilli, Tomatoes & Chicken, lightly spiced & barbecued in the tandoor (£12.95) & Chamura Bengali- An outstanding dish, created by Master Chef, Misbah, & English Partner, Lee, famous Kings Repose King Prawns & succulent breast of chicken marinated in a special hot sauce (£17.95), to accompany our mains we also ordered pilau rice and a peshwari naan to share.
Our main courses were presented shortly after and looked delicious. We shared each of the dishes and both were beautifully cooked and generous in proportion. The famous Kings Repose King Prawns were huge and so tasty. Again these dishes were polished off in no time. We finished our evening with coffees and my partner and I both said how The King’s Repose fully deserved to be awarded The Best South Asian Restaurant in the West Midlands by the Tiffin Cup 2016. The food & service truly is award winning!

Competition Staffordshire County Show Win a family ticket! Youngsters visiting Staffordshire County Show during half term will have a very messy time in the woodland area at this year’s event. A mud kitchen will be running for youngsters who aren’t too bothered about whether or not they stay clean and tidy at the show, which will be held at the Showground on Weston Road on May 31 and June 1. The show is one of the area’s major events on the calendar and is expected to attract more than 65,000 visitors. A huge part of its appeal is the large number of activities on offer across the huge showground and surrounding areas. As well as main ring entertainment over the two days, the Country Pursuits Area and Woodfest always prove popular with visitors. Show Secretary Holly Hobson said the mud kitchen in the woodland area proved very successful last year and is back again in 2017 by popular request. “Not surprisingly the youngsters loved this last year and the mud kitchen produced some great scenes and photo opportunities. It is an ideal adventure for those of a certain age to indulge in interactive messy play,” she said. “Visitors will also be able to make their own willow wands and see spoon carving demonstrations.
information on the developments to the new environmental education centre at Hilton Green and the activities that are on offer there.” Woodfest, run by Forest of Mercia, takes place in Berryhill, an oak wood at the Stafford end of the Showground. The twoday show is an ideal opportunity to see how this beautiful scenic feature is being restored. There is also the chance to wander through the woodland trail and take a breather in the wonderful picnic area. Visitors also get the chance to see a professional logger and his horse team in action. Other attractions in this area over the two days include besom broom, clog and basket making. Richard Williams, Chief Executive of the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society, which runs the Showground, said: “Visitors can see how these traditional crafts from a bygone era are been kept alive by experts. “There will also be cleaving and post and rail fence demonstrations, a great opportunity to view this precision art at work.

La Minky The Smooth Operators BARE TO BE DIFFERENT
One area we surpass in is our waxing treatments. We are specialists in all areas of waxing with particular knowledge in intimate hair removal. Our in house specialist June Laing (salon owner) has been a beauty therapist and owned her own business for over 10 years. During her career June branched out and made a move into the intimate waxing field and initially trained with Hive in Brazilian Bikini waxing and then in London with Kim Lawless waxer to the stars.
high quality wax. The range includes hypoallergenic waxes, moisturising natural waxes, strip and non-strip waxes, scented and unscented. The waxes are perfect for both male and female waxing treatments including intimate waxing. We use non-strip waxing in the salon specifically for intimate hair removal as the waxes literally shrink wrap the hair, removing the entire hair with its roots from the follicle, leaving the skin undamaged. Since the wax sticks to the hair and not the skin it takes the smack like sting out of the process you get with strip waxing hair removal. We have found regular waxing with this method weakens and slows down hair regrowth and produces results that last longer.
With years of experience under her belt June has mastered technique and client comfort during waxing of all parts of the body. Much care has been put into the choice of products used for hair removal within the salon. In 2012 June registered with the Perrin Rigot Expert Network and has been using these waxes ever since. With 30 years of innovation Perron Rigot is a renowned French creator of
Due to the sensitive nature of intimate waxing we offer a free consultation prior to treatment and advice on any area of waxing you are concerned about. If you do decide to try intimate waxing we recommend you exfoliate gently 3 days prior to hair removal and allow the hairs to grow for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to treatment. alcohol cleanser especially recommended for delicate areas and sensitive skin, before adding a few drops of Jasmine Oil to ensure the wax clings to the hairs and not the skin. After treatment the waxed area is to be kept clean, avoiding heat and friction for 24-48 hours. We advise that you do not apply any deodorants, body sprays, make-up, perfume or lotions to the waxed area during that period. However we do recommend the use of Lemon Myrtle multi-purpose liquid soap (sold in salon) to tackle possible ingrowing hairs and post waxing irritation. It is made from all natural ingredients, suitable for sensitive skin, contains Lemon Myrtle essential oils, has 30% more antibacterial properties than T-tree oil and can be used as an invigorating body wash that cleanses and protects the skin. Finally a few days after your appointment gently exfoliate up to 3 times a week, moisturise every day to keep skin soft and smooth.

‘MARVELLOUS MAY’ THE BULL AND THE TWINS Spring is well and truly upon us as some recent sunny days has shown. This is the time of year to sow the seeds for a happy summer. Later, we can all reap the rewards. We are continuing the theme of looking at the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac; for May and June exploring Taurus and Gemini. Being born on the first or last day of a sign, in astrological terms, means being born on a cusp. Thus, there is a benefit from reading that sign and that following or preceding. Taurus - The Bull April 20th - May 20th Element: Earth Ruling Planets Venus Symbol: The Bull Stone: Emerald Life Pursuit: Emotional and financial security Vibration: Determined energy Secret Desire: To have a secure, happy and wealthy life.
More Astrology Traits and Personality Cool, detached and obstinate Underneath their cool, calm and collected exterior are determined individuals. They will let others get close, but only so close as they want them; there is no such thing as an open-book Taurean.
Reserved and withdrawn Their feelings, fears and desires often run far deeper than anyone around them would guess. That's why Taureans are sometimes regarded as snobby, withdrawn, boring, or even sulky.
Love of Luxury Most Taureans like their creature comforts and hate change because it takes them out of their automatic pilot condition of separating themselves from the world around them. Sensual, devoted and kind They deal well with the personal, physical senses and consequently all the pleasures associated with them, often being nature and pet lovers,
Gemini - The Twins May 21st - June 20th Element: Air Ruling Planet: Mercury Symbol: The Twins Stone: Aquamarine Life Pursuit: Explore a little bit of everything. 54

Vibration: Intense mental energy Secret Desire: Be ahead of the crowd
More Astrology Traits and Personality. Multi-talented Geminis are multi-faceted souls who enjoy knowing a little bit of everything but generally not too much about one particular subject. It’s just that variety is the spice of their lives! And no one is better at multitasking than the quixotic Gemini.
Communicators: Geminis have also gained the reputation of being the incessant talkers of the zodiac. Those that don’t have the ‘gift of the gab’ are usually talented writers or have a special interest in foreign languages.
Adventurous and full of fun: Another reason Geminis evoke so much interest is many born under this sign are multi-dimensionally talented. Here at the ‘Double Award Winning’ Chase CACI Clinic we are also cool and calm but determined to ensure that everyone who visits us has a rewarding experience. We pride ourselves in being good communicators with a wide range of skills to use our machines and products to their full potential. We are CACI specialists and have two of their top machines: The Ultimate and The Quantum. Both can do the mainstream CACI facials and additional unique treatments. The CACI facial treatments are the only ones that regularly score ’10 out of 10’ when tested by both Consumer and Trade publications. The Crystal-Clear Oxygen machine infuses oxygen into the skin which helps to restore elasticity and firmness, Radio Frequency stimulates collagen and elastin in the skin. The ‘Heaven’ products we use also have a regenerative effect. Sue Starr
ESTABLISHED CLINICAL THERAPIST With a background in corporate coaching and development; Sue Starr has been an established clinical therapist for nearly 6 years and has seen many clients with a range of different issues. Developing strong links with GP’s and schools, Sue has experience with a vast range of personal challenges and symptoms that people have been struggling with, sometimes for years.
many of the cases of my clients. It helps them know they are not alone in their feelings and that there are ways to help make positive change”.
As an example, a recent report in the Daily Express demonstrated how for one client, hypnotherapy helped for their sugar addiction. The report quotes the NHS as advising “Hypnosis is widely promoted as a treatment for various long-term conditions and for breaking certain habits”and continues “hypnosis does seem to have an effect, though scientists disagree about how it works”.

Through her work with schools, Sue has built a range of tools and techniques specifically to support younger clients from age 6 upwards. These techniques along with a natural affinity, connection and passion for supporting young people, has meant many parents now go to Sue to help improve the welfare of their children.
The range of success stories cannot be denied, Sue adds “testimonials I have received demonstrate that through commitment from the client, genuine life enhancing changes can take place”. Many people believe they are alone in how they feel and behave in certain situations and that there is no help for them. Sue adds “whilst individual circumstances may vary, there is more commonality than differences in

South Staffordshire Cycling Scheme THERE IS NO AGE LIMIT! Have you heard of the South Staffordshire Cycling Scheme (SSCS)? It is a scheme that has been set up to encourage people to start cycling, to get back into it, or to provide an opportunity for those who already cycle to go out with a group of like minded people. It was established almost two years ago and it caters for people of all abilities as long as they are considered to be able to ride safely. There is no age limit and in the past there have been riders under the age of ten and over the age of eighty! The Rides are designed to build confidence, fitness, provide an opportunity for people to make new friends and explore the countryside. Each of the Rides is attended by two of the trained Ride Leaders, who before deciding upon a route for that day will discuss and assess the ability of those cycling. The routes used generally are along country lanes and main roads are avoided wherever possible. The lanes are used on regular occasions and assessments are made of any potential hazards and these are pointed out and explained before each Ride commences. The distance covered is again suited to those cycling that day and can range from a few miles at a gentle pace to something a little more energetic.
Should there be any punctures or mechanical breakdown, then the Ride Leaders are on hand to either assist with any repairs or to ensure that people get home safely. So why not come and join one of the Rides, all you have to provide is a roadworthy bicycle, helmet and essential spares? Although, it is also a good idea to bring a small amount of money as all of the daytime rides include a cafe stop for a drink, chat and rest. It is all completely free thanks to funding from the South Staffordshire Strategic Partnership, Sport England, the Wrekin Housing Trust and Staffordshire Local Community Fund. For more information please look at the cycling page of The Goodlife in South Staffordshire website under Health and Wellbeing, on the South Staffordshire Cycling Scheme Facebook page, the SSCyclingScheme Twitter Feed or email project co-ordinators April Lewis on aprilsscs.com or Neil Postins on neilsscs@gmail.com
Roundabouts are to be repaired NEW POTHOLE PATROL CAMPAIGN Amanda Milling MP has spoken of her delight that problem pothole sites in Cannock Chase which include Five Ways Island and Hill Top in Hednesford are to be repaired by Staffordshire County Council. The Cannock Chase MP has been an avid pothole campaigner and has been running a “Pothole Patrol” campaign for several years. Recently she met County Councillor Mark Deaville, the Highways portfolio holder on Staffordshire County Council and took him on a tour of the constituency to see some of the problem potholes in Cannock Chase. They visited problem sites like Five Ways Island in Heath Hayes and Hill Top in Hednesford and Amanda raised numerous other complaints that members of the public have brought to her attention. They also visited Church Road in Norton Canes where highways engineers were repairing potholes that the MP has raised with Staffordshire County Council. Amanda Milling said: “I receive numerous complaints about the state of the roads in the Cannock Chase area and have been running my Pothole Patrol campaign for the last few years. I have reported all the defects to Staffordshire County Council and sometimes I have reported the same defects several times over. There are some parts of the 58

constituency that seem particularly in need of repair, such as Five Ways Island and the double roundabouts at Hill Top in Hednesford. After visiting these sites with Cllr Mark Deaville, he has confirmed that these sites will now be repaired and works are being scheduled. This is fantastic news and long overdue.” Amanda Milling added: “I am hopeful that we are finally beginning to make some progress over getting the potholes repaired, but I will continue to pursue this campaign vigorously until all our roads are maintained to an acceptable standard.” Residents can let the Cannock Chase MP know about potholes by emailing her on amanda.milling.mp@ parliament.uk or calling 01543 877142, or reporting via her website at www.amandamilling.com/ campaigns/pothole-patrol. She will take them up with the County Council.

High and Mighty HR-V WITH UNIQUE FLEXIBILITY
Stilt-walkers used to be sideshow circus attractions – but nowadays, when it comes to cars at least, they’re everywhere. Here’s Honda’s HR-V. The name stands for High Riding Vehicle. In reality it is a Honda Jazz in drag, wearing stilettos. Ever since the Nissan Juke became a best-seller people have being crying out for ever more jacked-up versions of familiar hatchbacks. Compact SUVs definitely look better, I’ll give you that, but do they justify their place in our nation’s affections? Let’s find out. If you care about safety, listen up: the HR-V scored five stars in Euro NCAP’s crash tests. All models have six airbags and an automatic city emergency braking system that applies the brakes to prevent you crashing into the car in front at low speeds. Upgrading from the base S model to SE adds Honda’s Driver Assistance Safety Pack, which includes lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and adaptive cruise control. It’s a system better at nannying than your last babysitter: pop your kid inside and they’ll be safer than in the womb. There’s also legendary Japanese build-quality to consider as well. This Honda is more than capable of shrugging off the rigours of family life. You might even say it’s more durable and robust than a child’s Tonka toy. The 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel is tractable at low-revs, gutsy if 62

pushed, but sophisticated enough to waft you quietly around the city suburbs in style, on some of the funkiest alloys I’ve seen in a while. There is a new 128bhp 1.5 litre i-VTEC petrol, which is quiet and smooth, but as ever, unless you only potter to the local shops and back, diesel does it best. 118bhp means it’s not hugely quick – and it can be noisy at times – but the promise of figures like 68.9mpg and £20 road tax should make you feel better. There’s only a front-wheel drive set-up available in the UK market, which makes sense since I’m sure nobody ever uses such any offroad facility in a vehicle like this. Although a leisurely day spent offroading is far less dangerous than wandering alone and unsupervised into the cavernous bootspace. Your family will be left filling out missing person reports if you do. The HR-V has one of the biggest boots in its class, almost matching the Renault Captur. A squared-off opening and low lip make dragging heavy items in and out easy. Furthermore, the rear seats fold completely flat and there’s unique flexibility offered by the HR-V’s USP: ‘Magic Seats’, which flip-up, cinema-style, to create storage for tall objects. You can buy the HR-V in four different trims, ranging from the entry level S, through to the SE, SE Navi and EX. All of them are well equipped and feature climate and cruise control, auto headlamps and

Bluetooth. Pretty good so far, so but how does it drive? In truth, pretty well. The HR-V is easy to drive, with good forward visibility thanks to the – you guessed it – raised driving position. Riding higher than you ordinarily would injects a hitherto unknown confidence into driving around the urban jungle; you feel ever-so-slightly omniscient. The steering is light but accurate and the ride feels especially fluid when at speed and cruising. The city stuff is a cinch too - thanks to dainty dimensions and minimal overhangs – meaning you can place and park it with consummate ease. So it’s almost small enough for you to be able to park it in your pocket and it won’t see you out of pocket either with comparably low running costs – emissions run at 108g/km – and a tempting price of around £23,000. So the numbers add up and Honda has made a good fist of producing a product package which makes sense to the left - more logical hemisphere of your brain, even though, you’ll be thinking, can I just get away with a much cheaper Jazz? Sacrifice style over substance. Is the trendy HR-V really worth more? Well, having spent a week with it, I’m happy to report that I’m very impressed. With striking looks, a regal driving position allied to serious overtaking punch and fine handling manners, the HR-V is temptation itself.

A member of the British Menopause Society, Uma Bathula, who specialises in menstrual irregularities, explains, “Heavy periods means menstrual blood loss that is more than normal. It differs from one woman to the next, so I ask my patients to tell me what their normal loss is and how this is greater or longer than the usual 2-5 days or if it is associated with clots or flooding. Where heavy periods are affecting a woman’s quality of life and she reports certain symptoms, we will investigate and then treat her for these problems, using evidence-based treatment.” Once the cause is ascertained, a specific treatment is decided upon, based on the woman’s age and future fertility plans. Medical, rather than surgical, treatments are usually 66
