Pension Changes and the fallout

was to transfer the benefits and then fully encash the pension to use towards the purchase of a buy to let property. On the surface this would seem a reasonable thing to do however when I enquired a little further, Mr P was employed earning over £50,000 a year making him a higher rate tax payer. I did point out to him that it would not be beneficial to encash his pension as he would incur a significant tax liability. At this point he told me that he had already encashed 3 personal pensions with an overall value of £126,000 and paid almost £40,000 in tax leaving him with just enough money to buy a one bedroomed flat for cash and he thought that he would have a better retirement with this property than he would with his pension.

Following the complete overhaul of pensions in 2015 we are now over a year on and have some idea of how pensions are being utilised.

of the estate for inheritance tax purposes so when assessing an overall estate where there is an IHT liability, it can often be more beneficial to spend cash or other investments before accessing to any great extent their pension fund.

In April 2015 pension rules were changed to allow policy holders to draw down as much or little of their pension fund at any one time.

The overwhelming reaction to these changes has been positively received however, like all changes in financial services, getting the message across to everyone is proving difficult.

This was a major and welcome change as it gave everyone with a money purchase pension total control of their finances together with the added benefit that, should they die before age 75, the residual fund was paid tax free to the nominated beneficiaries. Should someone die having attained their 75th birthday, the residual pension fund would be inherited again by their nominated beneficiaries however the difference being that, as money was drawn down from the fund, it would then be taxed at their marginal rate. This last change now makes it vitally important to seek advice from a fully qualified Financial Adviser as careful planning can either reduce or, in some cases, eliminate totally any tax liability. Another great advantage to a pension is the fact that it is outside

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2017

We have in the past year seen some really positive outcomes however there has been the isolated client who felt that they did not require the services of a Financial Adviser and dealt direct with the companies with whom they held pensions with alarming consequences as in example one below. Against that we have also had some really positive outcomes and the biggest increase in enquiries this year has been related to preserved final salary/defined benefits schemes as highlighted in examples two and three below. Example One I was contacted by Mr P regarding a preserved defined benefits pension scheme with a transfer value of £74,000 that he had with a former employer. His intention

Mr P arranged a meeting at which I assessed and informed him of the implications of the action he had taken together with the alternative options that were available to him. He regretted encashing his pensions and I am happy to report that he did not encash his other pension. In fact we did not transfer the benefits as the scheme was not offering fair value in the transfer value unlike my next example. The worrying part to this is that the 3 personal pension providers only looked at their own scheme and by trying to save money by not taking financial advice the only winner is HMRC. Example Two I was last month contacted by Mr T (not from the A-team) who had earlier this year celebrated his 65th birthday and had three final salary schemes that he had yet to take benefits from, two of them being preserved and the third with his employer, West Midlands Pension Scheme from whom he had just retired. The sad part to this story is that both Mr T and his wife have in the past 16 months been diagnosed with cancer and are undergoing treatment. Obviously this has made both of them aware of their mortality and concerned that the pension

benefits they have reduce by 50% on Mr T’s death and disappear completely when his wife dies. This has made him look into the possibility of transferring the benefits and this is where it got really interesting. By law, a final salary pension scheme has to offer a CETV (cash equivalent transfer value) but only until 12 months before scheme retirement age after which point it is at the discretion of the trustees and not surprisingly the local government scheme refused to offer a transfer value whereas the other two schemes did. The one scheme was offering a pension of £9,800 per annum and they came back with a transfer value of £329,000 which was amazing because ignoring the fact that they both had cancer, we could purchase a standard annuity that gave a starting income of £10,650 p.a. which, in all my time in financial services, was the first time I had ever seen this. Needless to say, the idea of buying an annuity is not something that Mr T wants to pursue. Instead he is going to use this together with the other scheme that offered £79,000 as a family legacy to leave to his daughter and son, free from inheritance tax. I must point out that he does have two other pensions in addition to his state pension and savings that he can utilise should the need arise although, at any time, the pension is accessible and should they both recover I am sure they will ensure they make the most of the time they have left together.

Mr M is 54 and the scheme retirement age is 60. His projected pension on his retirement is £22,120 p.a. The cash equivalent transfer value being offered by Barclays was in excess of £660,000 and in addition to this Mr M also had other pension funds totalling over £140,000 giving him a total pension fund of £800,000. Following a comprehensive review of Mr M’s outgoings he came to the conclusion that if he had a gross income from his pension of £40,000 utilising his tax free cash as part of a tax saving strategy after tax he would receive £3,035 per month paid into his bank which is only £200 less than what he currently receives on a salary of £60,000 per annum. Following our involvement Mr M is now retiring on his 55th birthday in May 2017 and he cannot wait. These are just a small selection to highlight the difference we have made in our clients lives so I would urge anyone with retirement provision to seek Independent Financial Advice and ensure that your financial aspirations and objectives are fully catered for.

John Webb

Example Three I was contacted by Mr M who works for a high street bank who back in 2010 stopped future accruals into their final salary pension and switched over to a money purchase pension scheme. For the next 5 years employees were unable to transfer their final salary benefits in isolation and as the bank was making significant contributions into the money purchase scheme it was not advisable to transfer. Recently however the bank has changed its stance and now allow the final salary element to be transferred in isolation so we had another look at the options.

Insurance broker in Stafford scoops award PROVIDE HIGHEST LEVEL OF CUSTOMER SERVICE An insurance broker in Stafford is celebrating after winning a major award. Fiveways Insurance, with offices in Stafford and Newport, took the honour in the Pride of Stafford Business Awards.

The awards are run by the Stafford Town Centre Partnership with Stafford Borough Council. The partnership works tirelessly to raise the profile of the town centre and promote its prowess as a place to visit, do business and invest in.

Managers at the firm said they were delighted to be recognised and paid tribute to the firm’s staff who provide the highest level of customer service.

One of its main aims is to highlight the importance of town centres and just how vital it is for people to take advantage of what is on offer or run the risk of losing shops and tradespeople for good.

The results were announced after customers were asked before Christmas to vote on town centre businesses who went the extra mile in providing exceptional customer service.

For more information on the services provided by Fiveways Insurance visit www.fivewaysinsurance.co.uk or contact the Stafford office on 01785 251790.

Nigel West, managing director of Fiveways Insurance, said: “We won the award in the Professional Services category and are delighted that customers in Stafford took the time to vote for us. “A huge congratulations to Nick, Alan, Pauline and Claire at our Stafford branch, who work so hard in maintaining such a high standard of customer care. Nick Anthony, branch manager of Fiveways in Stafford, added: “We are thrilled to be recognised in this award. “Our clients make us who we are and we strive to continue offering the best customer service to all our clients, old and new, whether you are an individual or a business.”

SI Cannock & District NATIONAL MEMORIAL ARBORETUM To celebrate International Women’s Day some members of SI Cannock & District visited the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. International Women’s Day (March 8th) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The National Memorial Arboretum is the UK’s year round centre of Remembrance. The 150 acre site is a living growing tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our county. The Arboretum has over 300 memorials and 30,000 maturing trees. The members were warmly greeted by Alan & Malcolm their guides for the day. The day began by attending ‘The Daily Act of Remembrance’ at 11am in the Millennium Chapel which included a two minute silence. The members were split into two groups joining their guides who drove them in buggies to visit the vast amount of memorials. During the morning session visits included the Far East Prisoners of War Memorial Building which is close to The Sumatra Railway memorial. After this the members stopped at numerous memorials on the tour, where guides explained the history in detail providing the group with a greater insight about the individual exhibits. 14

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2017

After a two course lunch members joined their guides to continue visiting several more memorials. The four which the members chose to visit were the Shot at Dawn Memorial, Soroptimist International Garden, The War Widows Rose Garden and their last stop was the iconic Armed Forces memorial. All members found the tour to be informative, thought provoking, at times emotional and an appropriate way to mark International Women’s Day. More information about Soroptimist International is available on the website www.sigbi.org and about Cannock Club on www.sigbi.org./cannock-and-district or on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SICannock If you would like to come along to one of our meetings t:07971 494510 or email s.i.cannock@outlook.com

DC ROOFING SERVICES Expert fitters of UPVC Fascias, Cladding, Gutter Systems and Dry Verge Systems Maintenance free gable Neat, attractive appearance No more cracked cement Brown or grey colours available Prevents rain entering, causing rotten spas

DRY VERGE

No strong wind blowing off tiles

British Standards state that no reliance should be placed on the shear strength of mortar used in the filling and bedding. Mortar will eventually crack, in contrast, Dry Verges are mechanically fixed and each unit individually screwed. With the next unit interlocking giving extra strength and hiding the screws. This offers the maximum protection against strong winds and water penetration, giving you long term protection with a neat, attractive appearance and with none of the ongoing costs associated with Mortar.

Prevents entry of birds and large insects

WE COVER ALL ROOFING INCLUDING: NEW ROOFS/ FLAT ROOFS - Rubberised one sheet flat roofs – one sheet – No joints - Half the time to install compared to traditional felt or tar – Comes with a 20 year guarantee. EAVES PROTECTION SYSTEM – We cut back the rotten felt and insert the PVC Eaves Protection System

RIDGEFAST Ridgefast can be used with all standard ridges, tiles and slates. Ridgefast is more capable of standing up to the worst that the British weather can throw at it.

IT’S FAST Ridgefast is the fast and easy way to install a ventilated dry ridge. This unique system is designed to simply attach along the ridge and is far quicker than Mortar bedding.

IT’S UNIVERSAL Thanks to a unique fixing system Ridgefast can be used with all standard ridges, tiles and slates. Ridgefast is easily moulded to the shape of any tile or slate and the grey colour of the side flashing replicates a mortar finish.

The new Dry Ridge System is 100% UPVC and has been British IT’S VENTILATED Standards tested against warping, Provides a minimum ventilated area of 5000 sq.mm. per discolouring and cracking linearmetre and is suitable for ventilating flat tiles. You can use Ridgefast with ridge and gas terminals.

IT’S MAINTENANCE FREE The dry fixing method offers considerable advantages, not only in the speed of installation, but also in longterm economy and safety.

SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT ANNUAL DINNER

At their 62nd annual Charter Dinner held at Chase Golf Club, 96 members and guests of SI Cannock & District were entertained by Gail Stuart, daughter of the late Eric Morecambe.

On display were Gail’s personal photographs of family and Eric’s friendship with many entertainment personalities such as The Beatles, Des O’Conner and Tom Jones. Soroptimist June Bould gave the vote of thanks to Gail.

President Carole Holdcroft welcomed everyone including Soroptimists from other clubs in the region. Pat Cross and Cherril Pritchard, Joint Regional Presidents gave a witty and amusing response to Soroptimist International while also outlining the charities and good causes SI Cannock has supported since April 2016. After an excellent meal, Gail Stuart gave a humorous and enlightening talk on what life was like growing up in the Morecambe household. She gave several insights into the special relationship that Eric and Ernie had with each other and how this was undoubtedly a major factor in the success of their comedy duo. Gail talked about her father’s early years and how he did not attend school regularly, he was often found entertaining in such places as building sites and town centres for pennies. The audience were amused at the many embarrassing situations she found herself in as the daughter of a comedy genius.

ALL SEASONS WINDOWS & CONSERVATORIES SPECIALISING IN CONSERVATORIES & ORANGERIES THROUGHOUT STAFFORDSHIRE Whatever your requirements we at All Seasons pride ourselves on being able to cater for all your needs. Whatever you need, whether it’s a new window or doors, or its double glazing or conservatories, our dedicated team are at hand to help. We really understand that if you’re looking for a conservatory or Orangery then you want to choose a company who can appreciate your vision for your new home. We come highly recommended.

The earliest Orangery was built in 1545 in Padua, Italy, originally designed to grow citrus fruits in cooler climates. Today, and for many years, the Orangery has become more of a feature and doubles as an extension of the house to the garden area, somewhere to sit and relax, eat or entertain, gone are the orange trees and in with the bespoke dining suites and comfortable loungers!

An orangery has a timeless feel and a sense of real quality. These are wonderfully light and airy spaces with their lantern roofs and when integrated with the house, they are never out of use. Each one is a custom-made creation that will be designed to your every need. If you wish for your orangery to simply appear as an 28

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2017

extension of the existing building this can be catered for with such a high level of construction quality that no obvious difference will be visible. Orangery’s are, as opposed to a Conservatory, part brick, part glass, in comparison to the mainly glass and PVC frame of a Conservatory. In previous years the Orangery was designed to be a warm room all year round, now, with the latest technology, the glass keeps the room warm in the winter, and cool in the summer! Therefore the room can be used all year round.

All Seasons can help you arrange all your planning permissions for your build. Our qualified experts will be able to help you to draw out all the plans with you and keep you up to date during the whole project. If you need anything particular such as bi folding doors, patio doors, or just a traditional door we can arrange this all for you. We will prepare and install any necessary double glazing.

You can see our luxurious orangeries by visiting our showroom in Wolstanton. By viewing our range of previously built designs in person you can get a much better idea of what All Seasons can offer while you gain useful inspiration for your own creative orangery ideas. House mice are active all year round, which means you could find them invading your home or business at any time. These nibbling nuisances have a compulsive need to gnaw in order to keep their incisor teeth worn down to a constant length. Electric cables, water and gas pipes, packaging and woodwork may all be seriously damaged by mice - many instances of electrical fires and floods have been attributed to them. Mice have been known to spread some nasty diseases to humans such as Salmonella, Listeria, which can cause food poisoning.

It is important to get rid of mice quickly, as Mice are adaptable, highly mobile and breed rapidly - this combination can make mouse control a difficult task for the untrained individual.

Hearts, Minds and Souls NEW EDUCATION PROGRAMME WITH INDIVIDUALS IN MIND

With a long established reputation for developing well-rounded individuals, Tettenhall College Preparatory School continues to build on excellence with the upcoming launch of its exciting new Boat Programme. Designed with the individual in mind, the Boat Programme aims to deepen and widen the experiences open to all pupils from Years 3- 6 in its Preparatory School. New subjects include Latin, Mandarin, philosophy and engineering, to name a few, whilst extra support in reading, handwriting, mathematics and literacy is available for those who need it. This innovative offering has been developed by the enthusiastic staff team, who are keen to offer their pupils more individual and tailored routes to success. “With 45% of Key Stage 2 pupils achieving higher or significantly higher than expected results in English and 34% accomplishing the same in mathematics in 2016, the success of our pupils far exceeds the national expectation of 16%” Mr Simon Wrafter, the Head of the Prep school, explains. “However, we understand that developing our pupils as individuals and opening up opportunities to broaden their skills is as important as academic success – particularly since we are a non-selective school.” English, reading and mathematics are at the heart of the curriculum and are taught daily throughout the morning whilst our science classes, taught in the modern Prep School laboratory, now include an engineering focus. Despite the variety of opportunities available, core subjects continue to account for 60% of the curriculum at the School. The Boat Programme will focus on the heart and soul of the individual and thus, through a more tailored offering, every pupil will be able to more fully experience our three pillars of education – developing academic minds, active hearts and enriched souls. The Preparatory School is holding an Open Morning on Friday 5th May, where more information will be available about this exciting new offering as well as an opportunity to discuss your child’s future education with the team at the School. 40

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2017

Restaurant Review

Indian Cuisine Situated in the countryside in a beautiful barn conversion in Featherstone near Wolverhampton, The King’s Repose is a high quality and highly recommended Indian restaurant. With hosts Lee, Misbah and Monseur who have ran the successful restaurant since 1996, it is no wonder that they have many returning customers and new customers week in week out. In August 2016, The King’s Repose made it to the Grand Final of the Tiffin Cup, which was held at Bellamy’s Restaurant in the House of Commons. They were nominated by Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire. The Tiffin Cup is a competition which celebrates culinary diversity and is held each year to find the best South Asian restaurant in the country. The competition final was judged by Ainsley Harriot. The Kings Repose was one of the eleven national finalists in the competition. Unfortunately The King’s Repose didn’t place first, second or third in the finals, however they were named the best South Asian restaurant in the West Midlands! What a great achievement to shout about! Each dish at The King’s Repose has its own individual flavour and aroma from the herbs and spices specially prepared by the Master Chef Misbah. Using only the best ingredients with a wonderful combination of subtle flavours and tastes, blending fragrant and exotic spices from the Indian continent This evening my partner and I were delighted to be returning to the award winning, King’s Repose in Featherstone.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2017

After parking on the free secure car park to the front of the restaurant we stepped out of the car and could immediately smell the beautiful aromas. We were greeted at the entrance by Monsieur who remembered us from our previous visit, and were taken through to the bar area where we both ordered a Cobra beer each and began to peruse the menu. With so many tempting dishes to choose from we didn’t know where to begin. For our starters we decided on Sheek Kebab and Chingri Fry along with poppadums and dips. For our mains we opted for a Murgh Talibul- a thick sauce of Coriander, Chilli, Tomatoes & Chicken, lightly spiced & barbecued in the tandoor (£12.95) & Chamura Bengali- An outstanding dish, created by Master Chef, Misbah, & English Partner, Lee, famous Kings Repose King Prawns & succulent breast of chicken marinated in a special hot sauce (£17.95), to accompany our mains we also ordered pilau rice and a peshwari naan to share.

Our main courses were presented shortly after and looked delicious. We shared each of the dishes and both were beautifully cooked and generous in proportion. The famous Kings Repose King Prawns were huge and so tasty. Again these dishes were polished off in no time. We finished our evening with coffees and my partner and I both said how The King’s Repose fully deserved to be awarded The Best South Asian Restaurant in the West Midlands by the Tiffin Cup 2016. The food & service truly is award winning!

Canalside Farm - Stafford FARM SHOP FACELIFT Canalside Farm near Stafford, have announced today that they will be launching their newly refurbished Farm Shop. The shop, which opened just over 5 years ago, has been completely redecorated in a new contemporary design, as well as having a range of new and exciting products. The family-run Farm, which has been growing its own produce for over 30 years, has always had a Farm Shop during this time, but the new £1/2 million shop, allowed the owners to introduce a new bakery, butchery and delicatessen, meaning that most regular customers now do their weekly shop there.

Since the new Shop opened in August 2011, the owners have seen a significant growth, where the turnover has quadrupled and 12 new jobs have been created! It has also allowed the owners to launch a new side of the business and invest in building a brand new Canalside Café, which opened just over 2 years ago.

Anna Barton, Retail Manager at the Farm said: “It’s been five years since we opened the new Farm Shop and over time we have noticed a shift in what our customers want. We have seen a large increase in requests for foods which satisfy specific dietary needs, and because of this we decided to extend our range of choices from vegan to gluten free, lactose intolerant to sugar free.

The new Café, which has created 14 new jobs, has been extremely busy since it opened, serving a wide variety of locally sourced food, including fruit and vegetables fresh from the Farm and meat straight from their Butchery Counter.

The other main shift we have noticed is how busy our customers are and how little time they have. They love eating healthy and hearty meals but often struggle finding the time to prepare them. This has led us to introduce our own quick pop-in-the-oven ‘Kitchen Ready Collection’ - dishes homemade by our expert butchers 48

who believe traceability and local provenance is essential to quality and taste.”

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2017

South Staffordshire Cycling Scheme THERE IS NO AGE LIMIT! Have you heard of the South Staffordshire Cycling Scheme (SSCS)? It is a scheme that has been set up to encourage people to start cycling, to get back into it, or to provide an opportunity for those who already cycle to go out with a group of like minded people. It was established almost two years ago and it caters for people of all abilities as long as they are considered to be able to ride safely. There is no age limit and in the past there have been riders under the age of ten and over the age of eighty! The Rides are designed to build confidence, fitness, provide an opportunity for people to make new friends and explore the countryside. Each of the Rides is attended by two of the trained Ride Leaders, who before deciding upon a route for that day will discuss and assess the ability of those cycling. The routes used generally are along country lanes and main roads are avoided wherever possible. The lanes are used on regular occasions and assessments are made of any potential hazards and these are pointed out and explained before each Ride commences. The distance covered is again suited to those cycling that day and can range from a few miles at a gentle pace to something a little more energetic.

Should there be any punctures or mechanical breakdown, then the Ride Leaders are on hand to either assist with any repairs or to ensure that people get home safely. So why not come and join one of the Rides, all you have to provide is a roadworthy bicycle, helmet and essential spares? Although, it is also a good idea to bring a small amount of money as all of the daytime rides include a cafe stop for a drink, chat and rest. It is all completely free thanks to funding from the South Staffordshire Strategic Partnership, Sport England, the Wrekin Housing Trust and Staffordshire Local Community Fund. For more information please look at the cycling page of The Goodlife in South Staffordshire website under Health and Wellbeing, on the South Staffordshire Cycling Scheme Facebook page, the SSCyclingScheme Twitter Feed or email project co-ordinators April Lewis on aprilsscs.com or Neil Postins on neilsscs@gmail.com

THE INAUGURAL CHILLINGTON HALL HALF MARATHON

NEWEST HALF MARATHAN COMES TO CHILLINGTON HALL Staffordshire’s newest half marathon comes to the stunning grounds of Chillington Hall in Brewood, where hundreds of runners of all abilities are taking up the challenge. side of the grand family home, flowing through the grounds and then off into the surrounding woodlands and fields.”

Private home of the Giffard family for 29 generations, this Grade 1 listed manor house sits proud atop its rising grounds and forms the starting point for the race. This is the first time these grounds have been opened up for such an event, so runners are looking forward to the variety of beautiful terrain and landscapes.

Mark goes on to say, “The grounds and ornate lake of Chillington Hall were designed by none other than Capability Brown himself, hailed as England’s greatest landscape architect. We plan to take advantage of showing runners every inch of this wonderful estate, and with 75% of places already gone it looks like people are just as keen as we are to get exploring.”

The event is being hosted by Mash Running, a group of likeminded running fanatics who host fun and friendly annual events in and around Staffordshire. It comes on the back of their success with last year’s Cannock Chase Half Marathon which saw over 600 runners signing up.

Mash Running are keen to promote the friendly and fun side of running, which is reflected in their everyone is welcome attitude. Runners of all abilities are encouraged to lace up and get going at any of their events where first timers line up next to established club runners.

Mark Mundy, Mash Running joint race organiser, is busy making final preparations to ensure participants get the most from the event. “We are so excited to be given this opportunity to take advantage of what Chillington Hall has to offer. It’s a real varied course, starting from the

With a custom made medal for each runner and trophies for the winners there’s plenty of motivation for you getting to the finish.

Wolgarston High School TAKING PART IN FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT Wolgarston High School has been taking part in Fairtrade Fortnight. The students have been able to take part in activities from signing the school’s Fairtrade Pledge to learning about the positive impact Fairtrade has to people and the environment. Wolgarston High school has been awarded the status of a Fair Active School. This award is given to schools who takes action for Fairtrade within their school and their communities. On Thursday 2nd March the school’s Library held a Fairtrade Bake sale in which Fairtrade cakes and cookies were sold. On Tuesday the 7th March students held another event focusing on promoting Fairtrade Bananas and Fairtrade ice cream milkshakes. “It was great having Ben and Jerry’s milkshakes, I did not realise it was Fairtrade,” said Beth Wright (Year 11 student),

“It is a great excuse to buy ice cream, knowing that your money makes a difference to people who are less fortunate than ourselves.” During both events students Alex Lavender (Year 11), George Brown (Year 12) Charlotte Addison (Year 11) all worked together with Miss Roberts to run both events. “I think it is brilliant we have these events in school,” said Ellie Pearce (Year 11 student), “They are fun and you get to learn about different things and how our choices affect others.” “As always I would like to thank our Fairtrade Group Members for their help and support on these events, they always do our school proud,” said Miss Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator).

Stafford Sports and Performance Academy SCHOOLS GOTTA SING SHOW

The annual Stafford Sports and Performance Academy ‘Schools Gotta Sing’ show recently took place at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre across 4 evenings during the week of Monday 27th February 2017. Many new and returning acts made up of local school choirs and talented soloists took to the stage to showcase their talents and entertained the packed out audiences of friends and family each evening. This year saw approximately 35 acts, in the region of 700 young people from both local primary and secondary schools, taking to the stage alongside their music teachers. Each school gave the audience something to smile about as a variety of musical pieces were performed by the children who have been practicing weekly since September. The shows also included fabulous solo performances from an array of local, talented singers including Sam Hollyman and Ryan Wakelam who both reached the live stages of The Voice. The quality of the show again this year just shows that dedication

and hard work does pay off, as feedback from children, parents and teachers alike was that these were the best set of shows yet, and so many of the children left inspired about performing again at next year’s shows. As always thanks must go to all the staff at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre for their contribution in making the event run as smoothly as possible from the front of house staff, to the technical and backstage staff through to the box office staff, whilst thanks is also due to GCG Photography for capturing the event so well. As the shows continue to gain momentum plans have already been made regarding next year’s showcase. The shows will commence the week of Monday 26th February 2018 and all schools and community choirs are welcome to participate. Steve Glover, organiser, said, “We were thrilled with the four evenings of entertainment. All the schools and pupils were outstanding. Thanks also to the audience who raised an incredible £1600 for Katherine House hospice with donations.”

Volkswagen Tiguan

BY ROB TAYLOR

PERFECT FOR FAMILY LIFE

Hurrying to keep pace with an increasingly crowded compact SUV market comes the latest, all-new Volkswagen Tiguan. And let’s not beat about the bush: this car segment is Nissan Qashqai Country and, like some gnarly, tobacco-chewing sheriff from a Spaghetti Western, it doesn’t appreciate strangers causing a commotion in its hometown, the UK. Here today nothing outsells the allconquering Nissan, but you can’t fault VW for trying to get a piece of the pie. The Tiguan is, according to its manufacturer, “designed and engineered to redefine the segment by introducing class-leading levels of interior space, practicality and safety while also debuting cuttingedge technology and connectivity.” Everything certainly feels fresh and, as ever with VW, there’s a level of quality and class that helps justify starting prices of around £23,000. Sitting atop the fabled MQB platform for the first time, the Tiguan boasts a lot of safety gizmos such as City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring; Active Info Display and Head-Up Display. This combined with a slight shuffling of proportions to make the vehicle appear lower and 62

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2017

sleeker helps the Tiguan to be a real contender among its peers. And there’s more. In the cabin the wide centre console is paired with a new 4MOTION Active Control rotary switch, which, with ambient lighting and the optional panoramic roof – standard from SEL trim upwards – creates a premium feel. There’s also more head-room and knee-room than in the previous model, and a lower load sill improves ease of use still further. An entry-level Tiguan S comes with alloy wheels, air conditioning, automatic headlights and wipers, a large colour touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity and a digital radio tuner. However, I’d recommend plumping for SE Navigation spec to grab satnav, climate control, cruise control and parking sensors. Top of the range spec is the R-Line, but with a sportier body-kit, stiffer suspension and big alloy wheels, it’s largely surplus spending. The 2litre TDI SE 2WD auto (priced at: £28,910) I have here is a good all-rounder. Ninety-five per cent of all Tiguans sold in the UK are diesels and over half of those are bought with four-wheel drive, although quite why I don’t know – bragging rights maybe? I certainly have never seen a Tiguan doing duty

on a farm or taking part in the strange recreational hobby of “green laning.” This model with its 150bhp and promise of 58.9mpg is expected to be the best-seller in the range and on paper it looks impressive. In reality it’s a meaty, ample powerplant that boasts oodles of torque and, when allied to this intelligent auto gearbox, makes the Tiguan an effortless cruiser – happy to return decent fuel economy into the low 50s, in the real world. Although substantial wind noise at high speeds may drive you to be very grateful for the radio indeed. Even at this kerbweight, the handling is always safe and entirely predictable, which is paramount with SUVs, after all nobody buys them to take bends wearing a smile. Like its predecessor, the Tiguan has a comfortable, welljudged ride that doesn’t crash over bumps in the road and offers a steering set-up that is nicelyweighted too, if lacking some feedback. Overall this second-generation model is refined, spacious and well-sorted for family life. However, the new kid on the block still falls someway short of supplanting the Qashqai.

MINI Cooper S Seven Edition

BY ROB TAYLOR

EXCLUSIVE TWO TONE DESIGN

Looking back in order to move forward is nothing new. Everything ‘retro’ has taken on a life of its own lately because consumers seem to want nothing more than a well-packaged product that peeks into the past. Nothing sums this up better than a modern MINI. And the latest one, the Seven, goes even further. Any MINI has to walk a fine line between pastiche and progress, and referencing the very first Mini, the 1959 Austin Seven, is a bold move indeed. Although the odds have been keenly weighed and I’m sure parent company BMW is prepared to gamble that few to zero potential MINI buyers have even heard of the Austin Seven, let alone ever seen one. According to BMW this car has been “developed to showcase both the distinctive style inspired by the original Mini and the current modern values of the brand.” All I take from this is that this is another special edition vehicle from a brand that can do no wrong. Buy one, look after it and it may even one day appreciate into a future classic – especially if you opt for the Cooper S I have here. The Seven joins the current hatchback range in 5-door or

3-door form and boasts specially designed exterior and interior looks. Most notable is its striking as-standard Lapisluxury Blue paint finish; there’s also ‘Melting Silver’ roof and exterior mirror caps; MINI Seven door sill finishers and side scuttles with the Seven logo, as well as 17-inch alloy wheels in exclusive Seven Spoke two-tone design. But don’t worry if the colour blue is unlucky for you, three other body finishes are available: Pepper White, Midnight Black and British Racing Green. And as ever there are myriad customising options, including bonnet stripes. Inside, the eye-catching design cues continue with much asstandard kit and many Seven logos: sports seats in fabric/leather, ‘Visual Boost’ 6.5’’ colour display screen with Bluetooth and USB audio and automatic dual-zone air conditioning. Like your MINI hotter still? Add the Seven’s Chili pack to nab LED headlights, cruise control and more. Got 30k to burn? Then you can spec it into infinity with stuff like the popular panoramic glass roof, front driver and passenger heated seats, a Harmon Kardon hi-fi speaker system, as well as MINI’s Navigation System.

I’d caution against such sybaritic luxury however, and instead just get on with enjoying the rorty character of the 189bhp fourcylinder engine, which offers plenty of low-end torque when conditions become tedious, as well as plenty of top-end fun when it’s time to play. It’ll do 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds which is no mean feat for a car with this much refinement. Yes, the Cooper S still hasn’t lost its trademark go-kart handling, but it’s definitely more grown-up than it’s ever been. Thankfully despite its ever-growing middle-age spread (compare this version to the original BMW MINI of 2001!) it still feels small and nimble thanks to the accurate, well-weighted steering and light body shell. And with economy numbers of just 49.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 133g/km, this car is a seriously impressive all-rounder. Pricing is unsurprisingly steep - a 3-door Seven costs from £18,545 and £19,145 for a 5-door - but it feels like money well spent as this car provides a great balance between driving fizz and everyday practicality. And that’s definitely something that didn’t exist in 1959.

Self Referral Breast Care Service

At the private Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital we offer a self-referral breast screening mammogram service. We recognise that 1 in 5 cases of breast cancer diagnosed in women are under the age of 50. Our selfreferral services are open to all women aged 40 and over, are symptom free and have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months. For all ages, we advise women to be breast aware and to seek advice from their GP who, if necessary, can refer them for a digital mammogram or to one of our breast clinics to see one of our highly experienced breast consultants, Mr Brian Isgar and Mrs Pilar Matey, and our specialist Radiologists. This team will provide you with individual care throughout your screening and for any treatment that may be required. In the UK, 31% of all cancers diagnosed in women is breast cancer, making it the most common. There is a 1 in 8 lifetime risk of a woman developing this disease. However, with an early diagnosis along with improving treatments the outcomes from a diagnosis can significantly improve. Phoebe Cartwright, Radiology Manager at Nuffield Health explains, “Because of varying female hormones, women’s breasts change continuously. Being conscious of how your breasts normally look and feel at different times of the month and regularly checking them is an important part of being breast cancer aware. There are a range of changes and symptoms to check for, such as the shape or size or firmness of breast. Having a screening mammogram can also help detect significant breast changes for an early diagnosis. If you notice a change that is not normal for you, make an appointment to see your GP. A referral can be made by your GP to a designated centre. Here, a Breast Consultant Specialist and support team will carry out a more detailed assessment. This entails a clinical examination, with the possibility of undergoing a mammogram or ultrasound or 66

both. A guided biopsy and MRI scan may also be performed, if required. In accordance with the latest NICE Guidance, the assessment and tests can be privately arranged at the pleasantly situated Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital and are provided at the consultation in a safe and timely manner.” Alternatively, self referral services are open to all women aged 40 and over, are symptom free and have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months.
