utlook O e ir sh rd o ff ta S y a d Happy 3rd Birth Here at the Staffordshire Outlook we are celebrating our 3rd anniversary in April! We are very grateful to all of the clients who continue to advertise their business, and to the readers for contributing to the Staffordshire Outlook magazine’s popularity and success. When we launched in April 2012, we wanted to deliver the kind of magazine that the Staffordshire area was missing, this being a local, high quality, free magazine, super serving the area. The content that you, the readers have got involved in is phenomenal and we always feature great local stories and events in the area. Sales Director Sharon Caldwell says “I cannot believe how the last three years has flown by. I didn’t think when I started the magazine that it would be as successful as it has been to date. I have such great feedback from the readers of the magazine, and they comment on how local the content of the magazine is.
This was my main objective when I started the Staffordshire Outlook. I am extremely grateful to all of the companies for advertising their businesses in the Staffordshire Outlook magazine. The comments I receive every month off my clients is fantastic, and it makes me so proud that the Staffordshire Outlook is bringing new customers
“Since I started advertising La Minky & Salon La Mink in the Staffordshire Outlook in July 2013, the response and new customers that the magazine has brought me has been tremendous. I have used other publications in the past; however the Staffordshire Outlook is the one that has delivered the best results by far! I will continue to advertise in this great magazine for the foreseeable future, as every month Sharon comes to see me and we change the offers to keep my advertising fresh and up to date with the seasons. If you are looking for a magazine that gets results, I would recommend the Staffordshire Outlook, it has worked for us and I am sure it can work for you! Happy 3nd Birthday Staffordshire Outlook and I hope you have many more.” June Laing – La Minky &Salon La Mink
and increasing their profit. I want to thank you, the readers of the magazine and hopefully you will continue to support the Staffordshire Outlook.” Please see below a few client testimonials who are advertising their business in the magazine with great results.
Our customers always when coming to us from the Staffordshire Outlook magazine say where they found us from, each time the publication comes out from print and goes to door, I can tell the increased footfall and telephone conversations multiply, thanks to everything that you do, and congratulations on the Magazine’s 3rd birthday” Simon Edwards – Ralvern Ltd “Tech Alum Systems Ltd would like to say a big thank you to Sharon at the Staffordshire Outlook for her efforts in helping us put our adverts together. We have advertised in the magazine for the past 7 months and have found the response excellent. Our main objective has been to raise our profile in the Staffordshire area, and the Staffordshire Outlook magazine has certainly done this for us! A great local magazine packed with useful information.
“Here at Ralvern Ltd have been extremely pleased and very gratefully surprised at the localised advertising done in the Staffordshire Outlook Magazine. We have been advertising since 2013, and we go into every edition. Every time our advert is out in the areas that the Magazine covers we have numerous enquiries, with sales that out perform any other type of advertising that we do, our partnership that we have built up within the publication is simply fantastic.

cleway cy t or p ew N to d or ff ta S Cyclists gear up for new Cyclists and walkers are enjoying a new modern cycle path as the final stretch of a major cycleway project linking Stafford and Newport is complete. The £300k project completed by Staffordshire County Council in January followed a previous £1.1m investment on the popular route. The modern cycleway now takes cyclists and walkers through 14 miles of countryside along the former Stafford to Shrewsbury railway line. The picturesque route takes in the villages of Derrington, Haughton and Gnosall.
08
Cllr Mark Winnington and Sustrans Volunteer Ranger Paul Boston
the new cycleway will provide a welcome boost to our tourism and rural economies by encouraging more people to visit and cycle through our great county.
Local Staffordshire County Councillor and Cabinet Lead for Economy, Environment and Transport, Mark Winnington said:
“Cycling and walking are fun activities that not only help people lead healthier and happier lives but also help to reduce congestion on our busy roads which is one of our priorities.
“This has been an important project that we have been working on for many years now and it’s great news that the cycleway is finished.
The Stafford to Shrewsbury railway line ran via Newport from 1849 to 1966, and now the three-metre-wide cycleway gives people a 14-mile stretch to enjoy.
“The new route provides an excellent facility for local cyclists and walkers to enjoy, and I’m sure we will see many families and leisure cyclists, and people using the path to get to and from work. Attracting more visitors to Staffordshire is also something we want to see and
Staffordshire already has good access to the National Cycling Network (NCN) which connect with many local routes across the County. Local cycling maps for all districts are available from local libraries and you can find out more at www.staffordshire.gov.uk

Lighter evenings at The Lighting Warehouse Lighter evenings are here at last. This is the time of year when our gardens become an extension of our homes. Lazy evenings spent relaxing with family and friends at a BBQ perhaps. To create the perfect setting visit Paul at The Lighting Warehouse for advice on lighting for your decking or discrete lighting to highlight an ornamental feature or pond. How about a more functional lamppost for the drive way or indeed an outside lamp or a security light by the door or gateway? When the evening turns chilly, you can retreat into
the conservatory. The Lighting Warehouse has a large range of lamp bases and shades or decorative up lighters ideal for lighting up your conservatory. To add to your comfort why not install a fan to cool you down when the temperature rises. On the other hand if you prefer to make the most of the longer lighter evenings by decorating, call in at the Lighting Warehouse for some illuminating ideas. Remember, to ensure you achieve the effect you desire the home consultation is available all year round.

Cliff and Elaine Whiteley
People interested in fostering are being asked to change a life in 2015 as part of a new fostering campaign. Every day in Staffordshire more than 700 children live with over 380 foster families because they are unable to live at home. Some of the children may have experienced neglect and abuse, or have witnessed domestic violence or substance misuse. Whatever their experiences, all of them will be suffering the trauma of being separated from their own families and will need love, support and stability. Staffordshire County Council’s Fostering Service is behind the latest drive to recruit a further 60 foster families over the next twelve months. Cllr Mike Lawrence, Cabinet Member for children at Staffordshire County council explained that foster carers can provide these children with what they need and often give them their first positive experience of family life. Mike said: “Staffordshire has a wonderful group of foster carers who do a fantastic job. But, with high numbers of children still in care, we need more people of all backgrounds to come forward and foster, especially 12
for teenagers, children with disabilities and groups of brothers and sisters. “We are looking for people who can offer children stability, consistency and a loving family home where they can develop and grow. All our carers receive a professional allowance, and we provide full training, ongoing support and access to a support network of other foster carers. “Foster carers do make a real difference to the lives of the children they look after so I would encourage people who have the desire to help and the love to give, to please get in touch.” Cliff and Elaine Whiteley are one Staffordshire family who have been fostering for 15 years. Cliff said, ”We foster children on a long-term basis and we’ve been fostering now for over 15 years. When we first started we didn’t really know what to expect but knew it was a great way of making a difference to a child’s life. Fostering is very rewarding but can also be challenging, even when the children are very young. “Sometimes it’s simple things like having somewhere that they can call
home or just being part of a loving family. We have fostered six children and even though some are in their twenties now they still keep in touch and call round when they need help.” Foster carers Sally and Andrew Hayward have been fostering for four years and look after sibling groups. Sally said: “Fostering a sibling group is hard work. You’ll need boundless energy but it’s very rewarding. Watching their individual personalities develop and seeing the progress they make so quickly is wonderful. Keeping brothers and sisters together and watching their bond develop is very special. Managing 3 at the same time when they all want your attention is interesting but I have great support from my friends and family which is very important.” Staffordshire’s Fostering Service is rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for the support it offers to foster carers. Most people are able to foster; there’s no upper age limit, you don’t need to have a job or own your own house and you don’t have to be in a relationship. People can also foster a child on a short or long-term basis; just at weekends or school holidays.
A series of information events with opportunities to meet real foster carers have been arranged as part of the latest campaign. People can find out more at www.staffordshire.gov.uk/fosteringandadoption , by calling 0800 169 2061 or Text ‘Foster’ to 60003 for a call back.

The Bolddog Lings FMX Team, which reached the finals of Britain’s Got Talent and have appeared on Top Gear, will attract thousands of people to the main ring at the Staffordshire County Showground on May 27 and 28. More than 60,000 people are expected to flood through the showground gates during the two day show on Weston Road in Stafford during the half term holiday event. It’s a nonstop show that will entertain everyone from off–road enthusiasts to the general public. “It’s a must see part of any festival and is continually growing in popularity as the awareness of freestyle motocross increases.” Other attractions includes an extensive food hall and cookery theatre, Woodfest for the children, a vintage machinery parade, Young Farmer’s floats, along with the country pursuits area with falconry, sheep show, sheepdog and duck display and horse shoeing. Youngsters can also enjoy the donkey rides and animal experience.
Richard Williams, chief executive of Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society which organises the two day show, said: “We are very excited to welcome Bolddog Lings back to our showground. “The crowds loved them when they performed two years ago and the riders themselves were eager to return which is fantastic for the thousands of people the show pulls in every year. “The level of entertainment the Bolddog Lings team offer is second to none and the information and excitement they provide between performances is also an added bonus. “The interactive stand where motorcycle fans can take a closer look at the bikes and meet the riders is really quite special. “The stunt show is a spectacular within itself and just shows Staffordshire County Show once again offers many shows within a show 26

tafford S in r e si a e ts e g l ve a tr All aboard - as bus Bus users in Stafford can look forward to easier bus travel in the town with the introduction of Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI). The new system provides passengers with live information on arrival times for buses and is available on electronic screens at 35 of the town’s busiest bus stops Cllr Mark Winnington, Cabinet Member for Economy, Environment and Transport at Staffordshire County Council said: “This is great news for bus users in Stafford. Knowing exactly what time the next bus will actually arrive will help people to plan their journey much better, allowing them to make better use of their time. Passengers will be able to get live information at the bus stops and soon they will be able to get this information on their smart phone too which will be a real bonus. 30
“This is an exciting project for us and a real boost for the thousands of bus passengers that use Stafford’s buses every week. The more reliable and attractive we can make public transport, the more likely we are to get people to use it and making it a realistic alternative to the private car” Real Time Passenger Information uses smart enabled ticket machines or on bus units to track where the bus is on its route which then predicts exactly what time it will arrive at each stop. The new system will also be made available on smart phones and tablets shortly, giving people the chance to check times while on the move. The initiative is being rolled out by Staffordshire County Council in partnership with local bus operators and supplier JMW LTD. The scheme is part of the wider £4m Inspiring New Travel Options (INTO) project which aims to provide access to schools, jobs and services in the town.

Cllr Mark Winnington and John Barlow from Arriva
One local bus user taking advantage of real time information is Michelle Blake from Meadowcroft Park in Stafford. Michelle said: “I use the bus to get around the town most days and the live information is fantastic. It makes me feel much more confident and assured about when my service will arrive or when to expect it. Being able to check real times on my smart phone will also be very handy and will help cut out unnecessary waiting around at bus stops.”

Composite Doors at Composite doors are the newest type of doors used in homes. Composite doors have been designed taking into consideration the common flaws experienced in singular material doors. Using a combination of materials which have been selected for their beneficial properties, composite doors allow for the old flaws to be effectively ‘designed out’. Composite doors are made up from a variety of materials, including PVC, wood, insulating foam and GRP (glass reinforced plastic). The combinations of materials result in a door that is very strong and secure. They have a high resistance to weathering and will not react to seasonal changes like a singular material door. They have a higher thermal resistance than wooden doors, due to the insulating foam core. They are designed to appear as a wooden door, with an attractive wood grain, but thanks to the materials used, it won’t fade, discolour or require any maintenance beyond wiping with a damp cloth if it gets dirty. Their superior quality sets a new high standard within the door industry, with a fantastic range of colours make sure your next door is a Composite door from Winterwarmth. We also sell a large range of products including Windows, Conservatories, Patio Doors, Bi-folding doors, and Fascia’s /Sofits. All of our products are A rated
and energy efficient. We also offer a glazing service, including mirrors, glass shelves, processed work, any size and style and replacement sealed units. Recipe of the month
Serves 4 people
A ‘healthier’ Spaghetti Bolognaise / Chilli Con Quorni EQUIPMENT • 2 large pans - 1 for boiling pasta and 1 for slow cooking sauce • 1 baking sheet / tray • A good cooks knife • Fine grater • Chopping board - I use a good solid thick wooden board - get one and a good knife, it will change your life. INGREDIENTS • 1 pack of Quorn 350g • 1 kilo of fresh vine tomatoes • 2 medium carrots • 2 medium onions • 4 cloves of garlic • Marmite • 1 jar of Sun dried tomato pesto • 1 tube of sun dried tomato paste / puree • Gravy granules (bisto) • Fresh thyme and rosemary • Sea salt • Black peppercorns • 2 measures of Wholewheat spaghetti • Rapeseed oil • Parmesan • Watercress • Balsamic syrup • Red kidney beans • Fresh red chilli • A pinch of cinnamon • 1 jar of roasted red peppers • 2 measures of brown rice INTRO Being as this is the one dish that almost everybody has in their repertoire I thought I would give you an alternative method and ingredient list for making it. If you have been thinking about taking red meat out of your diet or at least cutting right back then this is a great alternative. It is meat free, gluten free, high in protein and fibre and 36

low in calories. Sea salt has slightly lower levels of sodium too but I’m not making any claims - it’s hard enough to know whats good and bad for you these days. METHOD Lay the Quorn out on your baking tray and cook in the oven on 180oC for 15 minutes to brown. While this is happening dice your onions and garlic and soften in a dash of rapeseed oil on a medium heat in one of your pans with the carrots either diced finely or grated and the thyme leaves carefully picked off the stalks (or throw the stalks in and pick out later). Once your onions and carrots have softened dice up the tomatoes and throw in the pan - allow to cook off for about 20 minutes on low to medium heat until the tomatoes start to break down. (While the tomatoes are cooking down get the other pan on and cook the pasta and cool down in cold water, set aside until your sauce is ready). Add a tablespoon of marmite and season with salt and pepper. Add 2 tablespoons of tomato pesto and puree and pour in about 1 litre of water. The most important part of making a sauce is allowing plenty of time to simmer the pan until the water evaporates leaving the ingredients well softened with the flavours developed (keep adding more water and simmering if vegetables aren't soft enough) I only use bisto as an emergency if the sauce is just a little thin and needs a quick helping hand to thicken up at the last minute. You can rub equal amounts of flour and butter together to produce what is known as a beurre manie - this will thicken your sauce also. Once the sauce is ready put your pasta in your empty pan and spoon in enough Bolognese sauce to coat the pasta. Spoon onto your plates and grate some parmesan cheese over. Serve this with watercress and drizzle over some balsamic syrup. With the sauce you have left over put it back on the heat and add in the tin of kidney beans, pinch of cinnamon, sliced chilli and diced roasted peppers. Allow to cool and store in your fridge for up a few days then re-heat thoroughly to over 75˚C to serve with brown rice and soured cream.

Established in 1971, Padma Lounge Bar & Restaurant is a family run business originally founded by the Ali family. Padma Lounge was one of the first Indian restaurants in Cannock dating back to 1971 when they were situated in Walsall road. Having moved 4 years ago to their town centre location, Padma Lounge brings top quality, authentic Indian and Bangladeshi fine dining to Staffordshire.
before along with traditional dishes and they all sounded beautiful! Our waiter for the evening arrived to take our order and was very helpful with answering our questions on particular dishes. For starters we had poppadum’s with dips and the vegetable platter for 2 which included vegetable samosa, panir shashlick and onion bhajee. Our main courses were the Naga Murgi £7.95 (marinated chicken tikka in a hot and spicy naga Bengali chilli sauce and then cooked in a moist consistency with fresh garlic,
This evening my partner and I had booked a table at Padma Lounge after hearing so many good reviews, and we couldn’t wait to try their culinary delights. We arrived at Padma Lounge and parked on the car park adjacent to the restaurant which was free of charge after 18:30 hours. We were welcomed at the entrance by Tarak the owner who showed us to our table. We were given the menu to peruse and ordered two cobra beers whilst doing so. The food menu has lots of interesting dishes which we had not heard of 38

capsicum tomatoes and spring onions) and the Chicken Shashlick Masala with rice £9.95 (cooked with onions, tomatoes and capsicum in a clay oven, then cooked again with thick spicy sauce with finely chopped onions and tomatoes and garnished with coriander) we also ordered a peshwari nan bread to share. Once our order was taken we sat back and took in the surroundings. The décor in Padma is very clean, smart and contemporary with leather seats, shiny mahogany tables and perfect lighting, great for any occasion. We also commented
and once finished we couldn’t wait to try the main course. Shortly after, our mains were presented and they looked and tasted amazing. All of the dishes were fresh, beautifully presented and tasted divine! Once finished, our plates were taken and we were given the deserts menu, however we were too full and finished our brilliant evening with coffees.
on what a great idea the wireless call system is, where on each table you simply press a button when you wish to order more drinks, order food and even request your bill. We also noticed that Padma Lounge has recently been awarded a 5 star rating for food hygiene by the Staffordshire local authorities. Our starters arrived and were both delicious and full of flavour

5* Kandolhu Island, Maldives from £2,079 pp. Save up to £684 per couple 19-27th June 2015
This part of the world is simply paradise. The Maldives is a desert-island dream where tiny islands are scattered like jewels across the ocean, each surrounded by a turquoise lagoon. The perfect honeymoon and diving destination, you’ll find resorts that exude romance and have a choice of luxurious villas, from retreats with a private stretch of beach to over-water hideaways with their own private infinity pool. In essence, this is the place for relaxation. Expect to lose all sense of time, what day it is and what’s going on elsewhere. This is the home of ‘no news, no shoes’ after all. Savour gourmet dining, spectacular diving and the most enchanting ocean sunsets. And if the stunning views aren’t enough, the activities and experiences on offer range from cultural homestays to desert island trips and a plethora of watersports. The underwater world here has been the subject of countless documentaries – the highlight perhaps being the chance 40
to drift alongside manta rays (best seen between June and October). We’ve been offering holidays to the Maldives for over 20 years, and there’s a reason that it’s our most popular destination. Evoking images of white sands, swaying palm trees and crystal blue waters, this is the quintessential picture-perfect holiday – with an added sprinkling of something special. Far-flung and exotic, it’s the ultimate luxury beach escape. Kandolhu is truly pictureperfect, with diverse dining and accommodation options that belie its tiny size. Beautiful Kandolhu presents the best of both worlds: a tiny, tranquil island with a lush green interior encircled by glorious white sands and pristine coral reefs, yet with a choice of restaurants and rooms more typical of a larger island. Each of the four à la carte restaurants are small and intimate – none more so than the Japanese restaurant, Banzai, with just six seats. The Market is the all-day dining restaurant; the elevated Olive offers Mediterranean classics;

and Sea Grill serves fresh seafood cooked to order. Kandolhu offers one of the Maldives’ most generous All Inclusive packages, including access to all restaurants, plus a large variety of drinks, including in the minibar and in-villa wine chiller. Considering just how much is included, it’s excellent value. The beautiful house reef can be reached from access points around the island, perfect for snorkelling – often amongst turtles – whilst numerous dive sites can be reached by boat in minutes from the dive centre. The elegant, Maldivian-style villas have modern interiors with wooden floors and high ceilings. Jacuzzi Beach Villas have huge open-air bathrooms with Jacuzzi bath. For a beach villa with pool, opt for a Pool Villa or one of the two-storey Duplex Pool Villas – rare to find in the Maldives. The Ocean Villas and Ocean Pool Villas are reached by an overwater jetty, with steps directly into the ocean. Salon La Mink Banish the Winter Blues with a natural sunkissed body If you are feeling low and need a quick pick me up or have a special event and want to look like you have just stepped off the “Red Carpet” why not try one of our St Tropez Spray Tans. St Tropez has been tanning the rich and famous for over 15 years. You can get that healthy just off the beach look without all the pesky sand, sun cream and not to mention potentially damaging UV rays in minutes. They are one of the most innovative and award winning self-tan manufacturers of current times with a wide range of products that work with your skin tone and are both suitable for men and women. There are a myriad of tanning options on the high street but we prefer St Tropez here at La Minky as it differs from other tans on the market in the following ways: • The products contain anti-ageing and anti-oxidant properties for added skin care benefits • Has Aromaguard innovative fragrance technology • The product develops to your natural skin tone • The combination of DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) tanning agent and specialist ingredients prevent an orange appearance • Helps to cover stretch marks, scars and disguise pigmentation conditions Why not try the new St Tropez revolutionary Spray Tan Express. ip Pledge sh e c ti n re p p A e ir sh rd Staffo Leading Stafford Businessman Ben Dellicompagni, Managing Director of Francesco Group, has brought together Staffordshire’s most influential business people in order to provide 500 apprenticeships for the future generation of the Stafford workforce. Ben, along with Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy, Chris Lewis of The Lewis Partnership, Apprentice Officer for Alstom, Garry Warrilow, David Frost MBE, Stafford County Council, Principal Stafford College, Beverley Smith, KMF Training Centre Manager, Jenny Conlon, Kate Ellis, Head of HR, Emma Bridgewater and many more, have come together as one unit to pledge to provide 500 apprenticeships to the youth of Staffordshire, to ensure that they receive the very best in vocational training, which will lead to skilled employment in their field and a career not just a job. In order to raise awareness of the opportunities presented to the young adults in Stafford who are making fundamental decisions about their future and to form strong working relationships with other bodies within the area, a breakfast meeting was held on Friday 6th March 2015 at The Swan, Stafford, where all parties came together to solidify the pledge of 500 apprenticeships within Staffordshire to ensure great awareness of the career choices for our young adults. All of the members of the businesses committed to the pledge believe that it is essential that business leaders are aware that it is their responsibility, as employers, to steer youngsters in the right direction, ensuring they complete their training as well rounded, presentable and confident skilled young professionals who will go on to secure professional, long term employment. Currently there is a 90% confirmed employment rate at the end of apprenticeships within Stafford and the aim of the 46
pledge is to increase this while creating more opportunities for the youth in the surrounding area. TESTIMONIALS FROM SUPPORTING PERSONAL
“I truly believe that apprenticeships provide the best way for aspiring young hairdressers to achieve their goal of fulltime employment. Anyone choosing a vocational path should consider an apprenticeship. Together with the other leading Stafford based businesses committed to the pledge, I hope that we can raise awareness of the opportunities that are available to young adults in Stafford.’” Ben Dellicompagni, Managing Director, Francesco Group “Apprenticeships are a vital part of building a skilled workforce for the future. Over the past few years I have seen that young people from all spheres of society can be enthused, encouraged and enhanced by the opportunity to work within an industry. Their energy and willingness to learn, mixed with new skills and onthe-job training, makes for a potent force, which is being felt in many firms in Stafford and surrounds who are feeling the benefits.” Jeremy Lefroy, MP, Staffordshire Consistency “Apprentices bring vitality, enthusiasm and energy to any business, be

it Accountancy, PR, engineering, creative and digital or hairdressing, apprentices will make a difference to your business from day one.” John Myers Head of Employer Services in Staffordshire for the National Apprenticeship Service “The Lewis Partnership aims to showcase Hospitality as a worthwhile vocational career choice here in Staffordshire. The company currently offers level different level 2 and 4 apprenticeships across the business, covering everything from reception, coffee shop, kitchen, restaurant and bar work. Last year the hospitality industry generated 8& of all net new jobs, 70% of them being 18-25 year olds. From an employers point of view, apprenticeships have to be the way forward. By the end of the apprenticeship we have well trained staff, confident and skilled in the roles and tasks they are required to perform and who also have an understanding of company standards and ethos.” Chris Lewis, Managing Partner, The Lewis Partnership “At Emma Bridgewater Ltd we recognise the importance of developing and retaining skills for the future of the ceramics industry and are using Apprenticeships to support our succession and manpower planning initiatives”. 2015 Aesthetic treatments in
was that, according to the report, 41% of girls aged seven to 10 and 63% aged 11 to 16 said they felt some pressure to look the way celebrities do. The review wants tougher controls over “highly misleading” advertising and marketing practices, warning that “before and after” pictures can be digitally enhanced. This places a burden on the shoulders of all Aesthetic Practitioners to act responsibly and ethically, which I am sure we all agree is essential.
Health and beautification rituals are being taken much more seriously and many people now seek professional treatments to help them look their best. This concentration on our appearance is hardly anything new as the beauty industry has been expanding and growing since recorded history began. There appears to be two fairly distinct approaches to Aesthetics/Beauty; to change how one looks, or to maintain ones features for longevity. The former can result is some very radical changes in an effort to reach the desired result. The latter is a more measured way of preserving looks whilst ageing gracefully. Neither is the ‘right approach’ every individual has the right to choose which is appropriate for them. People may be unhappy with aspects of their appearance but not ready to opt for a more invasive cosmetic treatment, a vast array of treatment options exists to help them put their best face forward. With an undeniable pressure to look better and younger for longer, there is no surprise that more and more people continue to embrace aesthetic treatments for personal improvement. Their motivation may be a job promotion, to appear their best on social media websites or merely to feel more confident. Programmes such as ‘Ten Years Younger’ have alerted people to what is achievable and also added credibility and made treatments more socially acceptable. 48
Society is now becoming more tolerant of people choosing to undertake not only cosmetic surgery but also non - invasive aesthetic treatments. These treatments can be administered by Doctors, Nurses and other suitably qualified therapists. There are over 4,000 nurses who administer aesthetic treatments. To ensure that the highest standards are maintained to protect clients the Keogh Report (2013) looked into cosmetic treatments (in particular Botox and Fillers) to regulate their administration and ensure better procedures and thus safety. One interesting fact to emerge
The improvements in equipment, knowledge and standards over the last few years have all contributed to the world of Aesthetic treatments becoming a safer place to visit. The Chase CACI Clinic is firmly committed to providing the highest level of care and standards of treatment using the very latest technology and knowledge allied with the finest products. This commitment, in conjunction with the personalised treatment plan which each client discusses with their practitioner combine to ensure positive outcomes.

ndrome y S l e n n u T l a rs a T : p ti Tom’s Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is well-known, Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome not so? What is the tarsal tunnel? The tarsal tunnel is a space in the foot formed between bones and overlying fibrous tissue. Within the tarsal tunnel lies a nerve called the posterior tibial nerve. The tarsal tunnel is walled on one side by sturdy bones, and on the other by tough fibrous tissue. What is tarsal tunnel syndrome? Tarsal tunnel syndrome results when the posterior tibial nerve is compressed within the tarsal tunnel. This condition is very similar, in mechanism, to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist. Both of these conditions result when a nerve is pinched within a confined space. The tarsal tunnel, as mentioned previously, has little room to give. When the space becomes tight, the tibial nerve is pinched. What are the symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome? When the posterior tibial nerve is compressed in the tarsal tunnel, patients commonly complain 52
of numbness over the bottom of the foot, as well as complaints of pain, burning, and tingling over the base of the foot and heel. Occasionally, tarsal tunnel syndrome is confused with plantar fasciitis, or heel spurs. What is the cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome? The cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome is unknown in most cases, but can be the result of fractures, bone spurs, ganglions and other benign tumors, muscle impingement, foot deformities. One of the commonest causes is from excessive pronation (rolling in of the foot). What is the treatment of tarsal tunnel syndrome? Treatment begins with anti-inflammatory medications, orthotics/ insoles and changes in footwear may also help to relieve the symptoms, and possibly an injection of cortisone into the area around the nerve may release it. If none of these measures helps, then a procedure called a ‘tarsal tunnel release’ may be necessary. This is a surgical procedure performed in the
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2015
operating room and it lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. When a tarsal tunnel release is performed, an incision is made to open up the tarsal tunnel and decrease pressure on the posterior tibial nerve. This surgery is also very similar to a carpal tunnel release in the wrist. See a Podiatrist for an assessment if you think you have this condition.

ry Risk! ju In r u o Y e c u d e R … rs Runne (Lopes et al 2012). Most of these issues are cumulative onset injuries caused by training errors and can be avoided with the correct advice.
Running is one of the most accessible forms of fitness training to ensure you attain an adequate amount of exercise each week. In fact if you run regularly then your relative risk of death can decrease by up to 63%. Exercise is medicine! However there is also a risk of injury from running and each year between 30-80% of runners suffer injury from running (Van Gent et al 2007). This statistic hasn’t significantly reduced in over 30 years! The biggest risk factor for recurrent injury is previous injury (Saragiotto et al 2014). The 5 most frequently reported injuries in runners are Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (aka shin splints), Achilles & Patella Tendonopathy, Plantar Heel Pain (aka Plantar Faciitis), Ankle Sprain and ITB Syndrome
If we progressively adapt our tissues to the loads encountered when running then we get stronger and faster rather than becoming injured. It’s a question of balancing appropriate training load with adequate recovery! We can optimise this response to training through being aware of some important information 1. Warm up – Progressively prepare your body for running with dynamic movement such as light jog, walking lunges, hopping, knee lifts 2 DON’T statically stretch before running– research suggests you will impair performance and increased your injury risk (Shrier et al 2004). 3. Take shorter, lighter, quicker steps – Most runners run with reduced cadence (typically around
160 foot strikes per minute). Try aiming for 3 foot strikes per second (Schubert et al 2014) 4. Train often – Running 4-5 times per week for shorter distances achieves better adaptation especially for the beginner. Progress training volume by approximately 10% per week. 5. Recover - Sleep, Diet, Hydration are all important aspects of recovery which optimise adaptation to training. Consider following the basic advice outlined above and you will already be well on your way to better running with a reduced injury risk. Active Therapy is a specialist running clinic and provides treatment, rehabilitation, gait analysis and shoe selection advice for runners of all standards.

four in five (82 per cent) of the Nuffield Health surgeons saying they have noticed a rise in men seeking cosmetic surgery in the form of nose jobs, eyelid lifts and ‘man boob’ removal. Almost all surgeons (95 per cent) also reported a rise in the number of previously overweight or obese patients looking for surgery following weight loss. The Nuffield Health plastic surgeons believe the reasons behind the trend among the ‘baby boomer’ generation to be a direct result of people living longer, healthier lives and wanting to ‘look well’ too. For men, surgery has increasingly become ‘the norm’ in recent years, and the trend looks set to stay, with men accounting for one in ten of all UK cosmetic procedures.* Mr Darren Lewis, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital said: “We’ve seen a definite increase in cosmetic surgery for men over the last few years. 10 – 15 years ago cosmetic surgery for men was less common, now about one in ten procedures we do are on men. It has become much more socially acceptable and there has been a big change in the way men view health and fitness in recent years, with the media, consumer magazines and celebrities all having played a role. As well as keeping fit and active, we are seeing men place much more emphasis on looking well too.” Mr Darren Lewis
The over 65s and men are leading a surge in cosmetic surgery in Wolverhampton. This trend is mirrored across the UK, as Nuffield Health’s first annual Plastic Surgery insight survey reveals emerging trends in the market.
Almost two thirds (64 per cent) of Nuffield Health surgeons, who between them carry out 1 in 10 cosmetic procedures in the UK, reported an increase in older people seeking surgery. Nuffield Health’s patient figures paint the same picture, with patients over 65 up by 49% in 2014 from 2007. Men are also continuing to drive the cosmetic surgery market, with

These new groups of customers join the traditional customer set, such as mums wishing to restore their pre pregnancy bodies, women in their 20s seeking breast augmentation and women in their fifties asking for face lifts. Many surgeons (95 per cent) have also noted an increase in people looking for surgery after weight loss as the procedure is increasingly difficult to get on the NHS. 82 per cent of the surgeons said that they are seeing uplift across all customer types as people
are starting to feel the benefits of coming out of a recession. Despite this, figures released last week by the plastic surgery body - BAAPS – reveal a slight decline overall for UK cosmetic surgery procedures. While some surgeons confessed to having been asked for penis extensions, ear lobe reductions, buttock implants and even a forked tongue, mostly patients are seeking a natural look. The plastic surgeons said they are seeing a definite move away from people looking to copy celebrities – for 75% of surgeons it was very rare to be asked to replicate a celebrity look – with people in favour of a natural looking result (100 per cent), something non-surgical (55 per cent) and to rejuvenate rather than enlarge (57 per cent). In terms of what motivates people to consider surgery, the research highlighted that the choice is not down to peer pressure, pressure from a partner, or the need to look good at work, but the desire to improve self-confidence - which 100% of
the surgeons agreed was a key motivator for most of their patients. The surgeons, based at 31 Nuffield Health hospitals across the UK were also asked to share their predictions for the future. The majority agreed that they would continue to see an increase in men (95 per cent) and older people (82 per cent) amongst their patients and most thought that plastic surgery would increasingly become the norm – indeed many view it as the norm already in most parts of the UK. Face transplants, light weight breast implants and mid face lifts (which lift the middle segment of the face) were highlighted as the new and innovative techniques that will become more commonplace over the coming years in the world of cosmetic or reconstructive surgery following accidents or injury. Mr Darren Lewis, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital said: “The pioneering areas are really in reconstructive surgery where Plastic Surgeons in the UK are really pushing boundaries, particularly in their
work with burns and major trauma. There are also incredible things happening with tissue engineering”. For further information please contact Louise Clarke on 01902 793259 or Louise. Clarke@nuffieldhealth.com

Mind the Gap By Martin
The spring bulbs are putting on a great show in the garden but when they finish there is sometimes a lull before the summer blooms kick in. Fortunately there is a good range of easy to grow perennials to fill the gap with flower. These are some of my favourites. All are suitable for the smaller garden as well. Geum (“Avens”) are one of the most reliable and adaptable perennials for late spring and early summer. They form low-growing mats of tough leaves and have bell-shaped flowers on wiry stems in a range of colours. Some like “Lemon Drops” have nodding single flowers, whereas a lot of modern types have larger, outward-facing semi-double flowers. One of the best is “Hannays” [picture 1] with lots of showy orange flowers on 1ft tall plants. Great for the front of the border. The perennial Cornflowers (Centaurea) ae invaluable for their great show of bee-pleasing flowers in April, May
and June. The montana types are ideal for front to mid-border although these do spread once established. “Purple Heart” [picture 2] is one of best with her amethyst-centred white flowers. There are also pink, blue and purple varieties to choose from. “Jordy” [picture 5] is a new form; more upright in growth and with masses of burgundy red flowers on and off from early May right through to October. Iris are one of the glories of late spring. The bearded types have the showiest flowers and need a sunny, well-drained soil. My favourites however are the Siberian Irises [picture 3] – these will grow just about anywhere except dark shade and thrive in wet or dry soils. The wild ones are blue but for the garden you can find white, yellow, pink and combinations of these colours. Hardy Geraniums (“Cranesbill”) are out of fashion somewhat at the moment and often ignore because a few varieties spread and seed to excess. There are some really good, well-behaved ones for the front to mid-border though. Geranium macrorrhizum is a mouthful of a name but this is a really good doer, growing in sun
Blow
or deep shade and always free flowering. There are magenta, pink and white varieties available. The Bloody Cranesbills (Geranium sanguineum) – so called because of their red roots – are brilliant, weed smothering plants for the edge of a warm, sunny border. They flower their hearts out in May and June. I give them a good haircut in July and they reward this attention by flowering again in August and September. The best varieties are “Elke” [picture 4], “Elsbeth”, “Album” and “Max Frei”. There are lots more great perennials to bridge the gap between spring and summer, if you want to get inspired get out to a National Garden Scheme garden in April or May and see what’s in flower. Better yet come along to one of our Plant Hunters’ Fairs and get some great flowers to fill the gaps in your garden. Janet & I run SpecialPerennials, a small garden nursery in Hankelow Cheshire where we hold two National Plant Collections and grow a large range of plants for a nature friendly garden. Our garden was featured on BBC Gardener’s World in 2014. Our website www.specialperennials.com is full of colour photos and growing tips. We sell by mail order and at Plant Hunters’ Fairs throughout the season. We will be at Weston Park on May 3 & 4, the National Memorial Arboretum on May 23 and Hodnet Hall on May 30 & 31. We are happy to bring orders to plant fairs for you to collect.

Black NoneBymRoob re Taylor There’s a kind of magic to this Honda Civic Black Edition. Some might say Black Magic but I won’t; preferring instead to leave all attendant dark arts allusion aside and sit safely beside the fireside, eating Nestle’s most coveted confectionary and listening to Queen, while ruminating upon Honda’s newest take on its most popular model. However, there’s still something of the night about this most stylish and individualistic Civic; not since the Batmobile has there been such devout stylistic adherence to monochrome. Crystal Black Pearlescent paint coats every inch of its enhanced bodywork, which boasts glossy front and side skirts, a black fuel lid cover, rear bumper garnish and spoiler. Gunpowder black 17” alloys complete the look. This car demands attention as it cuts a swath through today’s roadscape of dreary grey mobile metal boxes.
62
And it does it all without in anyway compromising the very reason why Civics have always sold so well: they are thoroughly well-engineered and well-made cars. In a world where flashy gimmicks seduce only the idiotic, Honda’s cornerstones of reliability, practicality and individuality are more essential and appealing now than ever and this ninth-gen iteration demonstrates this beautifully. Its blackness, of course, is just a veneer; a super-cool cachet that indicates a leaning towards the dark side without ever betraying its noble underpinnings. For despite all this attention grabbing visual stimuli the devil’s still in the detail: a litany of safety, comfort and convenience features which include Bluetooth hands-free, Climate Control, Hill Start Assist, Guide Me Home Headlights to name but a few. They all make you sit up and take notice. And I haven’t got to the best bit yet: the Magic Seats. In a fantastically simple yet brilliant piece of engineering Honda has come up with rear seats that can flip-up, cinema-style, to help accommodate larger loads when bootspace is insufficient. But - wait - before you turf out your backseat passengers and deploy them, check again in the boot because all is not what it seems. A secret luggage
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2015
repository hides beneath a false-floor, where the spare tyre used to live. I told you it was magic. This car can also completely disappear if you park it out in the country late at night, but that’s something else entirely. There’s also under the bonnet one of the best all-round diesel engines I’ve driven in quite some time: the 120 bhp 1.6 litre I-DTEC, which is capable of 78.5 mpg (I averaged 60.2 mpg) and running all the way up to 129 mph. It is very refined and torquey for its size and makes the Civic a competent cruiser on long motorway journeys; it’s equally at home in the city with comfy ride and responsive steering. It may be black but low emissions of 94 g/km of Co2 make it popular with people who like to be green and a price of just £22,460 is more than enough to keep buyers keen. Moreover there’s build quality that is second-to-none, famed reliability and a robustness to the interior which is reassuring, as well as pleasant to use. Not to mention a quirkiness of styling and design that is faintly left-field and just about defiantly iconoclastic enough to make you feel special and not one of the herd. Drive this brilliant little hatchback and I guarantee it’ll put a spell on you.
s better g le o tw , d o o g s g le r Fou By Rob Taylor To not be firing on all cylinders is an idiom that has obvious etymology in internal combustion. All ensuing metaphorical use is firmly focussed upon underscoring any given person or things’ inability to work at optimum performance. Indeed you might even say - as my editor did that I now embody said expression of underperformance by choosing this very opening to my roadtest for the brand new Seat Leon or, for the sake of pedants everywhere: Seat Leon SC FR 1.4 TSI ACT 150PS. But, please, do bear with me. The car made me do it. Now let me explain: I know this defence is probably unfamiliar to you unless you have very young children, but it’s perfectly valid in the case of this third generation Leon because of its cylinder shutdown system, Active Cylinder Technology (ACT), which sees this four-pot run on just two cylinders whenever opportunity presents. This car is a rule breaker that is hell-bent on challenging the status quo and leaving truisms lying in its wake. Obviously there is good, sound reasoning behind this: fuel savings and emissions reduction to name but two. This is borne out in the stats:
54.3 mpg and 119 g/km Co2 in a car that can hit 60 mph in 8.1 seconds, before topping out at 131 mph. These numbers were unthinkable when I first started driving some 15 years ago - just five years ago it was stretching things. Today such a harmonious marriage of parsimony and power is intoxicating. So too is the way this thing looks.
automatically applying the brakes; Tiredness Recognition, which quite literally analyses drivers to detect tiredness; Lane Assist, which applies a small amount of torque to the steering wheel to encourage corrective steering action when drifting out of lane; XDS, electronic limited slip differential, and an omniscient Optical Park System.
Flanked with optional full-LED lights, the Leon’s arrow-head prow and sexy coupe lines (you can have this Leon as a regular hatch or estate ST as well) not only spear swiftly through time and space, but they fire Cupid’s bow straight at your heart. Or it does in my case anyway. Whether or not that had to do with it being delivered to me in mid-February is anyone’s guess.
The Leon in FR spec is chock full of as-standard lovelies like 17-inch alloy wheels, LED tail lights, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, tinted rear windows, electric folding mirrors, an eight-speaker stereo and front sports seats. The cabin has a distinctive sporting bent and feels incredibly well built. The infotainment systems are user-friendly and intuitively designed. What’s more the seats are supportive and comfortable over long distance, as is the ride. Limitations of grip will seldom be found in normal conditions and there’s real fun to be had behind the wheel, as the driver-focus of the Formula Racing (FR) badge really comes to the fore when things get twisty.
Sitting on a slightly shorter wheelbase than the hatch, the SC loses very little in the way of practically to its five-door brother: bootspace is the same at 380 litres and reduced head and legroom is negligible. And did I mention how good it looks? What’s far less subjective however is the level of kit on offer for your £19,265. And what’s most impressive among the copious cavalcade of features is the clever stuff designed to keep you safe: as well as the prognosticating headlights there’s Multi-Collision Brake, which prevents further collisions in the aftermath of an accident by
Make no mistake this car can really perform at its zenith, but whenever modern driving conditions mitigate this the Leon will kick back and chill out to save you money. It’s the car for every occasion.

creating a more muscular stance. The ‘wing’ graphic design features when the rear lights are switched on. There’s also a large pallet of 15 exterior colours. New for this model are Summit White and Limelight Green, and metallics Shiny Rock, Emerald Green, Darksea Blue and Peppermint Green. While the basic dimensions of the New Corsa’s cabin remain largely the same, almost everything that sits in it has been re-designed.
Still one the UK’s top-selling and best-loved cars, the current model continues to garner affection from its owners thanks to its perfect combination of compact exterior dimensions and clever use of cabin space – major considerations when the new car was conceived. As a result, the new, Fourth-Generation Corsa is near-identical in length to the current model and retains its enviable space utilisation for occupants. But almost every other element of its design and engineering has changed, significantly improving the car’s driveability, efficiency, connectivity and overall ownership experience. All of the car’s body panels are new, and provide greater definition between the ‘sporty’ look of the three-door and the ‘premium’ five-door models. For the first time on a Corsa the car’s striking profile has been overlaid with Brit Mark Adams’ sculptural design, including elements such as the ‘blade’ running across the lower door-sections. Almost every element of the Corsa’s generous cabin is completely new, including a completely re-designed instrument panel and dashboard, and greatly improved levels of functionality, highlighted by Vauxhall’s sophisticated IntelliLink system – its first use in a high-volume application.
‘That also goes for the interior with its high-quality materials, excellent craftsmanship and leading-edge infotainment. It targets customers who do not invest a fortune in a car but demand quality at the highest level.’ From the front, the Corsa is immediately recognisable as the latest addition to the Vauxhall range. The bold face is clearly recognisable thanks to its ‘eagle eye’-shaped headlights, incorporating Vauxhall’s signature ‘wing’ LED daytime running lights and the low sporty trapezoidal grille, with a chrome bar supporting the Vauxhall Griffin. The front fog lights are embedded in two low, outward laying air inlets with chrome trim that make the car appear wider and lower. The side view of the three- and five-door bodies is very different. In the three-door model, the upper window line drops to the rear which makes the car look coupe-like. In the five-door variant, the belt line extends upwards creating a dynamic connection with the roof spoiler. The sculptured body sides feature Vauxhall’s flowing ‘blade’ signature. The rear view of the Corsa is also completely new. Wide horizontal split tail lights help widen the car and flow through to the rear shoulders
‘The new Corsa interprets our design philosophy perfectly,’ said Mark Adams, Vice President Design for Vauxhall/Opel. ‘The smoothly sculpted body, taught dynamic lines, including our signature “blade” body side and the sophisticated surfacing make the Corsa a sporty-looking small car with an elegant design. 64

High quality materials – like those used for the soft IP top-pad, or the decor elements dressed in rich satin chrome, are all worthy of vehicles from much higher segments. New Corsa’s interior also introduces an industryfirst seat fabric printing technology. A new driver control centre takes pride of place within the newly-designed instrument panel, which is themed around horizontal lines. There’s also a re-designed steering wheel that’s more ergonomic than before along with switches and chrono-styled instruments that are all finished in chrome. The interior is practical too with the front doors featuring a compartment large enough for a 1.5-litre bottle as well as three cup holders in the centre console. There’s also a flexible cup holder located in front of the gear lever. Corsa is the first high-volume Vauxhall to be available with IntelliLink, the innovative communications system which has already been seen in the ADAM model. The state-of-the-art IntelliLink infotainment system is fully customisable, and designed with ease of use in mind. The system is surrounded by high gloss décor, with supporting switches accented in satin chrome. Why not come and see the New Fourth Generation Corsa at Brindley Vauxhall, Cannock.
