Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery is designed to change the shape of your features or the appearance of your body. Whether to go ahead is your personal choice. A key decision you need to make when thinking about any form of cosmetic surgery is the selection of your surgeon. Only with the guidance of a qualified surgeon should you consider any form of treatment or surgery. The first step is to make sure that your surgeon is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Meeting your consultant is your first step towards achieving your goal. A consultation is an opportunity for both you and your surgeon to discuss your needs. Prepare for your consultation by making a checklist of questions or concerns you may have to ask the surgeon who will be performing the operation.

Successful cosmetic surgery begins with a thorough look at your health in addition to your reasons and goals for surgery. The surgeon will want to ask about your general health and past medical history, such as previous illnesses or operations, allergies, drugs you are taking and whether or not you smoke. It is handy to have this information with you. They will also ask you what changes you want to make and your reasons for making these changes. Feel free to go away and think about what you have discussed with your consultant. Ask more questions if you need to. It’s natural to have lots of questions as well as a few reservations. Don’t feel pressured into making any decisions. Cosmetic surgery is a giant step, but it’s a step that could make a huge difference to the way you feel as well as the way you look. Here are a few things to consider: • How do you want cosmetic surgery to make you feel?

This article was provided by The Nuffield Health Group www.nuffieldhealth.com/hospitals 04

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

A Sparkling Launch

for a New Look Wolverhampton Family Jewellers and the most pleasant shopping experience for our customers enabling a more browser friendly layout. “Our offering has evolved over recent years in line with consumer demands and now along with our high quality fine jewellery, we have secured for Wolverhampton some of the most successful fashion jewellery brands, to appeal to all generations and tastes. This contemporary new look reflects that.

Three generations of the Henn family (from left to right): Alan Henn, his wife Annabelle, their son John Henn and wife Magali, their daughter Amélie and the soon to be newest addition to the family

On Thursday 21st November 2013, T. A. Henn celebrated the next milestone in its storied history with an evening launch party for the newly refurbished store on Princess Street, Wolverhampton. The invitation-only launch party was attended by over 160 customers and numerous jewellery representatives brought their entire collection for a special viewing. The evening also marked the launch of the brand new T. A. Henn online store at www.tahenn.com. Now in its sixth generation, the family-owned company has grown and changed with the times since its inception in 1847 to give the best possible service to its customers. This recent refurbishment is no exception, with an investment of over £160,000 to regenerate the shop into a fresh, relaxing environment, complete with dedicated Wedding Ring/Fine Jewellery and Watch booths. The result is a beautifully lit, sophisticated showroom that would rival anything in central London, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere from the knowledgeable staff. Company Director John Henn is clearly pleased with the outcome: “This refurbishment was a logical, necessary step to take to provide a top quality environment

06

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

“The positive feedback from the launch was great to hear and it was lovely to see our customers enjoy the evening, complete with unique offers, complimentary gifts and refreshments. We will be learning from this event when planning for future ones so that many more of our clients have the chance to come along”. Hot on the heels of the launch evening, T. A. Henn also ran a special, one-day only event for the internationally popular Pandora Jewellery brand on Saturday 23rd November. A unique Pandora treasure tower, full of drawers concealing mystery Pandora gifts ranging from charms to bracelets. Each customer who spent over £75 on Pandora products was able to select one of these drawers and receive their free gift. The event saw hundreds of people come through the doors, with additional help from T. A. Henn promotional staff in Wolverhampton city centre guiding the way. In the lead up to Christmas, customers were able shop in the comfort of their own home on www.tahenn.com with free UK delivery on orders over £25, or a free ‘collect in store’ option. Customers can browse fashion jewellery, watch and giftware ranges, with new lines added weekly and fine jewellery ranges added in the early part of this year. John Henn commented: “The new website is an ongoing project. It is still in its infancy, as the weeks and months go on we will be adding more products, new brands and increasing our range to include our fine jewellery. In addition to regularly visiting our website, customers can keep up to date with the latest news and offers via our Facebook and Twitter accounts. “We recently received an award for outstanding achievement in the Portas Pilot Scheme and WV One Mystery Shopper Awards. To be recognised as one of the top ten retailers in Wolverhampton for customer service is a great achievement, and brings recognition for our continued efforts.”

Jack Moody Group Business Celebrates 50 Years in Back in the early 1960s, steelworker Jack Moody, a groundsman’s son, tired of his work in the foundries and wood mills. At the age of 17, he invested in a rake, a fork and a shovel, fastened the tools of his trade to his bicycle and pedalled off round the West Midlands to set up his own landscape construction business. Now 50 years on, Jack Moody Holdings PLC has a turnover of around £16million, a staff of over 250, and has won numerous awards and accreditations, having become leading experts in the construction and maintenance of living landscapes. His businesses now includes one of the UK’s largest independent garden centres, Hollybush Garden Centre, situated between Cannock and Wolverhampton, as well as the country’s leading purpose-built recycling facilities, and industry renowned Jack Moody Landscapes Limited. It’s a far cry from Jack’s first foray into the world of landscaping, which involved mostly domestic gardens, with him working alongside two assistants. One of them, Gordon Griffiths, is still with the company today as Contracts Director. Jack soon passed his driving test and bought his first van, a Morris Minor. A few years later he was able to buy his first business premises, in Brunswick Park Road, Wednesbury, where he doubled his workforce and bought his first pick-up. Wednesbury Fencing was formed as part of a practical expansion in 1976, and the company became a Limited Company the following year when it moved to its present site at Hollybush Farm. It was a natural progression that the site become a garden centre and, as its success grew, it expanded. 08

Today its numerous successes include subsidiary nurseries and aquatic centres, major recycling sites at Stafford, Telford, Berkswell near Solihull - the recycling businesses has steadily expanded and now has contracts with numerous local authorities to receive and process their green waste. It also works with some prestigious major house builders on showhome landscaping - including Barratt, Bovis, Persimmon, Redrow and Cala Homes.

Despite its success, it is still very much a family business - Jack’s wife June has worked alongside him for 45 years; son Robert and daughter Kate both work in the family business, Robert as Managing Director and Kate as Hollybush’s Business Development Manager. Many of the staff have worked there for over 20 years.

It has won several contracts and numerous awards including three separate medals from BBC Gardener’s World Live, and several BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) environmental awards.

A particular success is an aquarium and aquatics department which was directed by Tim Porter, who was with the company for 30 years. Tim died earlier this year after losing his battle with cancer, and a special tribute is in the process of being finalised which will involve setting up a Charity Trust Fund in his name which will go on to benefit the community in a very generous way.

Among the more innovative contracts has been the installation of a roof garden at a Lichfield care home, the prestigious landscaping contract at the FA training ground at St George’s Park, Burton on Trent, and, for the first time ever in the UK, the setting up of courtyard landscaping using only edible plants, undertaken for Coventry University.

It’s been a long ‘bike ride to success for Jack from the steel foundries of the Midlands to its present success, but he has never lost sight of the things that really matter in life - and the result is a caring ethos which spills over into the community leading to the company having a much respected reputation.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not

just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock

and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

after 26 years l ea d ng hi is bl pu s re cu Hednesford author se Author Rosemary Craddock, aged 80, who was born in and lived all her life in Hednesford, Staffordshire has secured a publishing deal with her latest novel The Lovegrove Hermit, after a gap of 26 years. Rosemary’s first book (The Secret House) was published in 1979 and she then went on to have a book published nearly every year until 1986 when The Devil’s Folly was launched. She has been writing since childhood and has had several novels published full of mystery, romance and intrigue, most of them set in the nineteenth century.

decided to go ahead and publish it. I’m already working on the next one, so watch this space!” Gill Jackson, managing director of Robert Hale Ltd said “We’re delighted to have Rosemary back on board! With a story as good as The Lovegrove Hermit we were very pleased to be offered it, and to welcome Rosemary back to Hale.” The book was published on 31st October 2013 and is available to buy in Hednesford Library as well as via www.halebooks.com.

In 1987, after writing seventeen chapters of her work in progress, Rosemary decided that there was something missing so she put it to one side. She did not write again for many years. Two years ago, Rosemary watched a Tom Stoppard play called Arcadia and it was this play that inspired her to write a book where one of the characters was a hermit and the name The Lovegrove Hermit came to her immediately. All bundled up, with the synopsis and a covering letter, the manuscript was sent off to her previous publisher – Robert Hale Ltd and they almost immediately came back and offered her a publishing contract. Rosemary said “I’m delighted after all this time, that the same publisher enjoyed my book and

DESIGN • PLANNING • CONSTRUCTION

Buckley Loft Conversions have been established for over 20 years and is a family managed company based in Cannock Staffordshire, producing 1000’s of outstanding conversions and extensions all over the Midlands area, adding space, value and style with innovative designs and high quality construction. Whatever your budget or requirements a loft, garage conversion, or extension could be the ideal solution for your particular needs, without all the stress or financial considerations that a move can entail. With the added bonus of providing additional usable floor space, personal design input and the increase in value to your property, even in the current economic climate it still makes a wise financial decision. To help, we provide a Free Design and Quotation - We visit your property, discuss your needs and ideas and return, with hopefully a proposed design you will be delighted with. We are aware from experience that for many clients it is a stressful and confusing area. From the initial survey you will be given a fully inclusive quote. We will take care of the Architectural Plans, Building Regulations approvals and if necessary, any planning requirements through to completion. We will guide you through the process with the minimum of disruption, to achieve a first class finish that we are so proud of. For your peace of mind we are 14

members of Federation of Master Builders, Masterbond, Fairtrades and Staffordshire Trade Registered. We have our own in-house team of professionals, Surveyors, Architectural, Administrative and Construction personnel, which will design, plan and construct your project to suit your individual needs and budget. All our constructions are overseen by our Operations Manager, to help ensure minimal disruption, high quality workmanship and the necessary compliance with current Health & Safety legislation. How height, does the loft have to be? This is often one of the first questions we are asked. From the loft floor to the ceiling we advise around 2.3 metres. Anything below and it is not possible to construct a loft conversion, unless we are able to raise the roof to create the necessary additional height. This is an altogether a more complex and costly construction, but one we frequently undertake. If you are limited by height, you are still able to utilise the space, to provide a boarded storage area which provides useful storage, complete with a loft ladder for easy access.

Where loft height is limited, we have seen a substantial increase in the demand for Garage Conversions. We were approached recently by Real Homes Magazine to provide a case study of a recently completed Garage Conversion, which they featured in their September issue. The design was an instant hit with the magazine, it achieved a spacious kitchen - dining area, but also leaving a proportion of the garage as a useful storage area. We have extensive experience in all aspects of construction and a considerable amount of extensions are also built, sometimes concurrently whilst we are carrying out a loft or garage conversion. Our website www.loft-conversions.com shows a selection of these photographs that are reproduced with the kind permission of our clients. Please take a look for inspiration and to see the endless possibilities that can be developed to enhance your house and make it your perfect home. Our website only demonstrates out constructions, we do not use any studio, or Velux promotional literature, as we want our clients to see the quality of our work, although we have to give credit for the beautiful interiors to our clients.

SI Cannock and District’s latest speaker was Kara Bird who works as an embalmer within the Co-operative Funeral profession.

She was introduced by team President Lakhwinder Thompson and, despite this being a possibly difficult subject, gave an interesting and at times amusing talk. Kara has worked in the profession for 20 years and explained that the most rewarding part of the job for her is the reconstructive work she undertakes, thus giving

comfort to the bereaved when they see their loved ones at peace. She told club members that she has done reconstruction work with soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan and that a team of embalmers are set to fly out to the Philippines to work in the disaster areas. Kara feels it is important that work such as hers is ‘de-mystified’ so that it is not seen as something to be frightened of – indeed, she has told her own 4 year old daughter about her job. Soroptimist Ann Rotchell thanked Kara for her enlightening talk. President Lakhwinder reminded members of their collection of gifts to be given at Christmas to the women and children at Pathway, the refuge for victims of domestic violence and of the Quiz Night to be held in January 2014.

ite Story The Marm van der Does By Robert

Marmite, the world famous dark brown food paste produced from yeast extract, has its origins in 1902 in the Staffordshire town of Burton upon Trent. In the late nineteenth century the German scientist Justus von Liebig discovered that the yeast extracted from the brewing of beer could be concentrated, bottled and eaten. This gave the Gilmour family of Burton the idea a few years later of forming the Marmite Food Extract Company. With their yeast supplied by nearby Bass Brewery, the family set up a factory in their home town -where it remains to this day- and gave birth to what would soon become an

26

international phenomenon. Within five years they required a second factory in Camberwell Green, London. In 1990, following decades of growing popularity, Marmite became a subsidiary of Best Foods Inc. The Marmite trademark currently falls under the aegis of Anglo-Dutch multinational consumer goods company Unilever, who merged with Best Foods Inc. in 2000. It says much about Marmite’s unique taste and people’s familiarity with it that they are often unable to separate the product from the brand name. There are in fact other yeast-based food spreads with a similar taste found worldwide, perhaps most famously the Australian Vegemite, but they are rarely as strongly or distinctly flavoured as Marmite and in most cases were deliberately created with a slightly altered version of the original in mind. The official Marmite recipe is a secret, but ingredients aside from the glutamic acid-rich yeast extract include sodium

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

chloride, vegetable extract, folic acid, niacin, thiamine and riboflavin. The official Marmite marketing slogan is “Love it or hate it”, which reflects the undeniable fact that Burton’s finest is among the most divisive of food products. While a huge number of people adore Marmite and cannot get enough of the stuff, there is a possibly equal-sized amount of consumers who are simply unable to tolerate it anywhere near their mouths. Very rare is it to come across a person who feels indifferent towards Marmite, which is a sure indication of how well-established the brand has become, especially in its home country: a British institution no less. Indeed nowadays it is common to hear the name Marmite used as an adjective, with people relating to it anything that polarises opinion. Even the bulbous-shaped glass jar is easily identifiable and has become, arguably, synonymous with Marmite. Likewise the logo, with its white lettering on a red banner set amid a yellow background has been a ubiquitous sight in food retailers

for nearly a century. In fact it is the image in the white space beneath the red banner that reveals how the product got its name. It depicts a large covered earthenware cooking pot, known in French as a ‘marmite’. It therefore follows that Marmite was originally sold in Britain in such pots, it was in the 1920s that the glass containers became the means of supply. Only as recently as 2006 was a variation in the form of a smaller, squeezy plastic jar introduced. As a note of caution to travellers to Australia or New Zealand, the Marmite found on sale in that part of the world is of a slightly altered

composition to the British original. The success early on of Marmite led to a sale of rights in 1908 to Sanitarium Health Food Company to distribute the product over there. As a result it has for many decades been manufactured in Christchurch, New Zealand but with different quantities of ingredients and with the adding of sugar and caramel. It has been described as having a notably “less tangy” taste than the British version and is also packaged in a very different container. While undoubtedly popular in Oceania – true Marmite cannot be found thereit is not what enthusiasts of the real Burton-based Marmite are used to.

Marmite owes much of its popularity to its versatility. It is a nutritious, savoury spread that can be enjoyed on sandwiches with or without butter, on toast, on crackers, or even when added to hot water in the same way as Bovril. It is also totally vegetarian and being yeast-based is an excellent source of vitamins, so much so that it was even issued to British troops in the First World War and was used to treat malnutrition during the 1934-5 Sri Lankan malaria epidemic.

Recipe Of The Month

Recipe provided by Wayne - Personal Chef Major Cuisine

Steamed Shin of Beef and Oxtail Pudding When you think of making a dish in these winter nights it’s hard to believe that cooking meat for hours in pastry would be such a warming delight that is hearty, full of flavour and inexpensive. In the early 17th

century after the invention of the pudding cloth the Brits went mad for puddings, when the men were toiling in fields it allowed their wives to do chores whilst the pudding was steaming away in

INGREDIENTS meat FILLING*

• Diced shin of beef 400g • Oxtail 600g • Diced carrot 50g • Diced onion 50g • Diced celery 25g • Quartered mushrooms 100g • Chopped garlic 1tsp • Chopped thyme 1tsp • Beef stock 1ltr • Red wine 100ml • Tomato paste 2tsp • Seasoned flour (paprika) 50g Sweet Pastry

• Flour S/R 300g • Suet 100g • Water 50ml • Chopped herbs 1tsp METHOD

1. Coat oxtail and beef with flour, place in a pan of hot oil and seal on all sides, place in a casserole dish. 28

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

Serves 4 their kitchens. The pudding would act as stodge, sweet or savoury it served its purpose by filling the hungriest of men. I have chosen to do a twist on the original pudding and use shin of beef and oxtail.

2. Fry all of the diced vegetables, garlic and thyme in the oil until soft, add mushrooms, red wine, tomato paste and stock, bring to the boil then pour over meat, cover with a lid and cook in the oven for 90 minutes (180). 3. Reduce sauce until it’s a sticky consistency leaving the beef, vegetables and mushrooms in it. 4. Remove the meat from the oxtail and add to the beef, chill for 30 minutes. 5. Combine all pastry ingredients ensuring not to over work (place in a refrigerator for 1 hour). Roll out 4 circles of pastry and place in pudding bowls, fill each bowl with equal amounts of filling and fold over the pastry until it is sealed, cover with foil and place in a steamer for 45 minutes. (If you do not have a steamer, make a water bath in a deep roasting tin and place in the oven for 60 minutes) SERVING Suggestions I recommend you serve them with garlic mash, braised red onions, sweet carrots and baby leeks. Happy cooking, Wayne Personal Chef Major Cuisine.

Indian Restaurants There is almost no High Street in the country that doesn’t have at least one Indian restaurant... They were probably the first of the ethnic eating places to appear in this country. And although they have now been joined by restaurants offering meals from almost every other country in the world, the Indian restaurant seems to hold a special place in our hearts when it comes to dining out. Of course, like many other purveyors of ethnic food, most Indian restaurants will take orders for eating at home or where you will. Orders may be telephoned in or given during a personal visit. The dishes will be individually packed in suitable dishes; together with all the necessary accompaniments ready to serve piping hot at your own, home table. An Indian take-away is a great way to entertain unexpected friends or cater for a large celebration or party without the hassle of hours of pre-party preparation. There are still people around who would probably enjoy an Indian meal but who find the thought to be frightening. They fear it may be too hot for them to cope with. Well there should be no need for fear. Curries come in great variety from sweet and mild to wildly volcanic and all stages in between. The heat or spiciness of Indian food depends very much on the region from which the chefs come. Generally speaking the northern parts favour the milder dishes and the further south they hail from, the hotter they are. However, even this rule is far from invariable. What diners will find is the waiting staff will be only too happy to advise customers on the degree of spiciness likely to be encountered in any of the dishes on their menu. And they can be trusted; it would never be in their interests to mislead their patrons. So what can you expect to find on the menu at your local Indian restaurant? Well starting with probably the mildest of dishes, there is the Korma, a mild, golden concoction fragrant with almond and coconut. The other end of the scale you may see Vindaloo, a classic hot dish with a rich dark sauce... Some Indian dishes contain meat, some are purely vegetarian. Some are based on potato, others on lentils or chick peas. The spices used include cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, chillies, peppercorns, cumin and mustard seed. Coriander seeds, finely ground are frequently used for thickening the sauces and turmeric provides the colour. You may also detect garlic, onion and tomato though with the best

foods; the individual ingredients are seldom detectable, being incorporated into a deliciously fragrant whole. Much of the attraction of an Indian meal comes from the accompaniments and side dishes, which add so much to the whole eating experience. But don’t forget the drinks. These days lager is favourite, Kingfisher or Cobra are the Indian versions and very refreshing they are too, especially after a very spicy dish. However, wine is beginning to be accepted, especially the semi-sparkling varieties. Nonalcoholic drinks include Lassi, a yoghurt based drink similar to buttermilk and of course, tea, hot or iced. There can be few in these islands that have not enjoyed the delights of an Indian meal. There are some however. If you are one of them, well don’t you think it’s time you did? cooks up his or yl Ta ’ er ow P e h ‘T il h P World dart’s champ y school er ok co n ia d In ew n l ca lo own tasty takeaway at At a time when many of us are feeling the tight pinch of the economy and unwillingly having to sacrifice some of our favourite indulgences, internationally renowned darts player Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor has stepped up to champion a new business that gives local people a cheap and delicious alternative to their costly take-out curries and restaurant meals. A family-run school of Indian cookery running affordable classes in a variety of venues, iCookIndian has been set up to inspire people with the confidence and skills to cook authentic, home-style Indian food for themselves and their friends and families, no matter their budget or experience. After learning about the Harrar family’s enterprise, Stoke-on-Trent celebrity Phil Taylor joined the school as a student for the first official day of classes on Saturday, hosted at South Staffordshire College’s

Rodbaston Campus in Penkridge. Entertaining fellow students with his enthusiasm and singing as he cooked, Taylor got stuck in to the hands-on class, learning to prepare a range of dishes, even sizzling up his own aromatic vindaloo and naan bread. Using cheap ingredients and spices available from local supermarkets, Taylor was amazed at how easy it was to make his own Indian ‘takeaway’ and found out how cooking the food himself gave well-known dishes a freshness, subtly and flavour often

missing from pre-prepared restaurant fare. ‘I don’t like my curries really spicy,’ remarked Taylor as he followed founder and tutor Amarpal Harrar’s guidance on how he could alter his own blend of chilli and spice in a dish to suit his taste. ‘I’d never have thought I’d like a vindaloo but this is spot on… You’re giving people confidence to have a go,’ Taylor said. Cleaning up after a busy day of lessons, Harrar shared his delight over the success of the day. ‘It was an absolute joy to see everyone have fun, gain confidence and cook fresh, colourful dishes to be proud of,’ he commented. iCookIndian’s founder Amarpal Harrar spent his childhood in Punjab, India, and had his love of good food stirred by watching his mother cook. He still remembers excitedly the exotic sights and tastes of his village foodvendors and now helps his students recreate many of the foods that shaped his early experiences. Indian cooking remained a huge part of his family life as he and his wife raised their three children in Coppenhall, near Stafford, and his children, now grown, cook alongside their father as part of this new family initiative.

Operating as a ‘pop-up’ school, touring venues in Staffordshire, classes are held at community centres, colleges, festivals and places of business. Prospective students are encouraged to get in contact with iCookIndian via their website at www.icookindian.co.uk to find details of the next available course or to see if a class can be arranged in your local area. 01952 321334 | WWW.STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK.CO.UK

Blue Ginger

On this cold winter evening after too much turkey we both decided to pay another visit to Blue Ginger, Cannock. We parked on the large free car park which is situated to the front of the restaurant and made our way inside. As we walked through the doors we were greeted by a warm inviting large modern bar area with large comfy leather sofas, which was great for the customers who were ordering a take away.

This is the highest award given by the MBA, and you need to have received at least two awards before being considered for the Curry Cup, and must have consistent good food and first class service”. fantastic award winning 2013 which will hopefully continue for 2014. We were shown to our window view table, and given the menus. Aziz the waiter asked if we would like to order drinks, we both opted for one of our favourites, a Kingfisher lager which is served on draught. Whilst browsing through the menu Aziz explained that all of the main dishes were 2 for 1 (Mon – Thurs when dining in the restaurant.) We both agreed that this was such a fantastic offer as this applied not only to the traditional Indian dishes, but also for the specials section of the menu which I must say sounded very tasty and with some dishes that I had never heard of. We were now very spoilt for choice!

Traditional starters are priced at £2.95 - £5.95 and fusion appetizers from £3.50 - £10.95. Main courses start at £5.95 - £10.95. Aziz returned to our table with popadoms and we both commented how different these were, they were not traditionally round shaped, but a smaller oval shape and the selection of pickles and chutney to accomplish them really got our taste buds going. Aziz was very helpful and asked what our preferences were and then recommended dishes to us. For starters I chose Korahi Kebab with my partner going for the Tandoori King prawn.

For our main courses I wanted to try a different dish, rather than a traditional, so off the specials I went for the chicken silsila which is chicken, onions, peppers and tomatoes, toasted in a clay oven and served with mushrooms and spiced with green herbs and served on a bed of noodles. My partner chose Muncharian Chicken which is lightly spiced strips of chicken breast, fried then cooked in a special hot sweet and tangy sauce We ordered a couple more Kingfishers, whilst our food was being prepared and we both mentioned how much we liked the décor which is very modern, spacious and contemporary. The tables are positioned perfectly so you are not too close to other diners, and the table we were sat on felt like our own private booth. There is a very relaxed feel and the staff are very polite, helpful and professional. Our starters arrived and they looked and tasted scrumptious!

We were both looking forward to our main dishes and when they came we were very impressed. Both dishes were beautifully presented and we couldn’t wait to tuck in! The chicken in both dishes was cooked to perfection and if we had to describe it in one word it would be ‘delicious!’ Once finished we both said that was quite possibly one of the best Indian meals we had been for. We were too full for deserts this time but finished our great evening with freshly ground coffee and mints. Blue Ginger is a fully licensed restaurant and caters for 120 diners.

f Staffordshire O e tr en C rt fo m o C le Cast rt – A Legend In Comfo ‘Once a doctor always a doctor’ was the title of an autobiography (by Heinz Harman, a JewishGerman physician). Yet the founder of one of the UK’s leading mobility products companies, Castle Comfort, whose head office is in Staffordshire, discovered that this claim is indeed a very valid one. Keith Simpson, who had already formed a quickly growing business providing special chairs and stairlifts, learnt that his own doctor, at the age of 76 – had chosen a deserved retirement. It was felt that Dr Neil Stirling MB ChB, who had earned an unrivalled reputation throughout a career spanning six decades – should be invited to join the Castle Comfort Group. The invitation was accepted. Neil, who apart from being an NHS GP and later in private practise, had served as Staffordshire Police Doctor, and as Chairman of the British Red Cross Medical Association. He was now to enter a new phase in a long and distinguished career. Dr Stirling’s status and reputation - along with a remarkable spirit and enthusiasm to ‘work forever’ - was to become a huge advantage to an already fast-expanding business. The soon to evolve ‘Stairlifts Doctor’ website makes fascinating reading. Indeed – once a doctor always a doctor. These days, at the age of 87, Dr Stirling still arrives punctually and with amazing regularity at Castle’s office based in Wolstanton, Staffordshire, driving from his home in Cheshire. His vast experience of people’s health and mobility problems means that folk considering the acquisition of a simple gadget or indeed a luxury product to make life more comfortable, can, after

a chat with Neil, feel reassured and confident over the decision. Since Castle Comfort rekindled their promotional presence at Stoke on Trent indoor markets, literally scores of former patients from all over Staffordshire have been keen to call in and meet him again. Tales of how Dr Stirling could assist and go that extra mile to ensure proper treatment, remind all at Castle Comfort of a time when a family doctor was indeed just that – rather than a member of a health ‘referral bureaucracy’ which is sadly, these days, not always serving us well. The very origins of the Castle Comfort Group make a fascinating story. Keith Simpson the current hands-on MD had taken early retirement but became involved in the study of mobility products such as chairs beds and stairlifts when his own aging mother was in need. It was discovered that either these items had to be obtained from national ‘hard sell’ organisations – or the local furniture shop who often knew little about them nor could provide a proper 24 hour service – guaranteeing quick delivery, removal of old items and immediate personal attention if things go wrong. So Castle Comfort was born at what had been a branch of the National Westminster Bank in Newcastle under Lyme. Keith acquired the abandoned magnificent building, still known locally as ‘The Bank’ containing the area’s main medical practise. Keith proudly states his best asset from this acquisition was

not the bricks and mortar – but his own business bank manager, Ann Bruce. Ann was persuaded to join Keith in the new venture, and within a short space of time became a director, to be joined some years later by her brother, Malcolm. So indeed, a formidable team awaits you should you decide to look into the world of mobility or ‘homecare’ (as it is preferred to call them) products.

Here is a water colour by former Stoke on Trent Lord Mayor, Richard Leigh. It is of Bank House, Castle Comfort’s head offices and used annually on the company’s Christmas card. Richard and his wife Leila were ever-grateful clients of Keith and Ann, and they decided to draw and present this lovely work to them.

And a nice story continues… When Leila, decided to move into residential care, she asked us to remove a wooden bench from her house that was a retirement present for the late Richard. It was restored, and had a small tribute plaque to them both placed on it. It is now in the garden of the care home.

Entries to be received by Saturday 25th January 2014.

Salon La Mink Have you overspent over the festive season? Salon La Mink can make you look and feel fabulous for 2014 with an amazing offer! For January only we are offering 15% off any Colour service that’s taken with a cut and blowdry. Average colour usually £70.00 with discount £56.00 saving £14.00! This offer is available Monday to Friday only, please mention Staffordshire Outlook at time of booking.

In this edition Salon La Mink and the very talented hairdresser Russell Hickinbotham is going to be advising and answering a few hair questions, Russell says “I am going to share with you, through my experience and knowledge of hairdressing, my recommended product of the month and answering a few questions I have recently been asked by my clients. If you want any questions answered please get in touch! Here at Salon Mink we use Wella products, and my recommendation is the New Wella Professional’s Oil Reflections”. This new technology instantly conditions and protects hair for incredible smoothness and shine, without all the weight. Its unique formula has Macadamia Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, and Vitamin E, which is known for its natural antioxidant properties. This Oil instantly reveals the beautiful reflections of your hair colour, conditions the hair, and smoothens it to make it feel incredibly light and supple. This product can be used on damp hair for an instant lightweight smoothening effect, on wet hair before your blow dry for additional protection, or on dry hair after styling to give hair extra shine and to intensify colour reflection. Please call the salon to ask any further questions or to purchase this product. Sharon from the Staffordshire Outlook recently visited Salon La Mink. Sharon said ”I had visited the salon a few times on business and was so impressed with the surroundings of the beautiful barn conversion, that I would now book an appointment for a new hair-do. I was bored with my shoulder length hair so after a great consultation with Russell we both decided that I was going to have a sleek, chin length bob. The cut was amazing and exactly what I wanted, I left the salon looking and feeling a million dollars! I am not the best at styling my own hair; however Russell has shown me how to style my new bob and recommended the products to use, which has certainly made my hair look and feel great over the busy festive season. I will definitely be returning to Russell at Salon La Mink, and would recommend to anyone who wants a great hairdresser, in a gorgeous salon to visit.” 36

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

Ask Russell the expert Q - I want to change my hair colour from dark brown to blonde, can I buy an off the shelf product to strip cover? A - Yes you can buy an off the shelf, BUT I would strongly advise you to seek professional help. It is not just a case of putting the colour eraser onto your hair, as that alone will not give you the desired colour/look. Worst case scenario it could permanently damage the structure of hair. Call me and book a consultation and I can advise you and hopefully transform the colour you desire! Q - Why is it important to get your hair cut by a professional? A - I can advise and help you choose the right style, that suits your face shape and lifestyle. Take into consideration the texture, the weight of your hair, how it falls and understanding the natural growth patterns. I can also advise products that will change the texture/appearance of your hair, if your hair is flat and lank, I can use products to make it big and bouncy. I can also recommend how to keep your style looking fabulous between appointments.

UltraSlim Clinics UltraSlim Clinics have introduced a new fat reduction and cellulite treatment and clients have been queuing out the door to avail of the new treatment after the many recent reviews from celebs including a recent article in the Daily Mail about The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton on speculation of how Kate managed her new flat tummy so soon after childbirth. The new UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ treatment uses Cryolipolysis technology which is a new noninvasive alternative to invasive Liposuction. Cryolipolysis is a slimming technique that uses controlled freezing or cooling to reduce fat bulges such as love handles and tummy fat with permanent results and promises a reduction of the treated area by up to 30% in a single session. The treatment is clinically proven and FDA approved. With their exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ machine, UltraSlim Clinics can now provide the same quality treatments as London’s Harley Street Clinics only at a fraction of the cost. Hanna McCormac from UltraSlim Clinics explains how. “Our exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device uses 4 hand pieces, unlike most other clinics including the top clinics in London which only use 1 hand piece, therefore we are able to treat larger or 4 different areas simultaneously which means you receive more value for money in addition to reducing the need to return for more treatments.”

“For example, unlike traditional machines we can treat both upper and lower tummy during a single session or both ‘love handles’ and ‘bingo wings’ together, therefore you would only be charged a single fee for these areas rather than the need to return to have your left side completed then right side, which most clinics will charge an additional treatment fee for each treatment area for around £300-£800 per area. It also allows us to treat family members or couples together having up to 2 areas treated each simultaneously therefore reducing time and money for everyone involved. It’s because of this technology and capability that we can offer the most cost effective Cryolipolysis treatments in the Midlands. In addition, our clients can also benefit from having our UltraSlim Lipo™ Cavitation & Radio Frequency treatments at the very same time, which provides instant results to target other areas of unwanted excess fat.” After a very successful launch of the new treatment Hanna continues, “We have seen a phenomenal increase in bookings in the run up to Christmas with December fully booked within a week of launching the new fat freezing treatment and we have already taking bookings well into the New Year, as our regular clients know only too well this can be our peak period after we all over indulge during the festive season. Booking well in advance is strongly advised especially with the new fat freezing procedure as the demand grows daily for the Cryolipolysis treatments following the many recent articles in the media from celebrities who have had the treatments.”

o Botox or T s; n o ti c je In g in x la e Muscle R question? e th t a th Is – x to o B Not to The subject of Medical Aesthetics usually brings a plethora of opinions to the fore, so we thought at The Cottage Surgery, that having some of the science and history behind one common treatment fully explained, could lead to a more informed discussion taking place. Firstly we should recognise that there are two quite different injectable treatments available. This piece will focus on the muscle relaxing process using Botox. However, we should make it clear that we often advise a prospective patient who has come in asking for Botox, that in fact Dermal Fillers would suit their needs and satisfy their expectations more thoroughly, or indeed vice versa. To add a little further complication to this initial explanation, we should also say that more than 40% of our patients actually make use of both treatments. Perhaps now is the time to begin our delve into the science and history of Botox, that once more fully understood, will assist anyone considering this treatment to make a more informed choice. The injection of Botulinum toxin type A, or ‘Botox’, is the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed in the in the world. Even with its popularity, there are still many myths and misinformation about this procedure. The most common of these myths, and often perpetuated by elements

of the media, is that a patient using Botox is being injected with botulism, but this is NOT true. Scientific hats on, here is the background: In the UK, it has only been licenced for fully medical purposes, such as for Hyperhidrosis, (Excessive Sweating) and gained its first UK licenced for spasaming (non-medical term) specifically for children. Interestingly it has since been found to assist with some forms of migraine, & is now licenced for this. Clearly, as Botox has UK licences for the above, the lack of licensing for ‘aesthetic’ purposes in the UK, is not due any risk, perceived or otherwise, but due to the UK medical authorities general resistance to licencing drugs for use in the Medical Aesthetics’ field. So how does it actually work? When Botox is injected into a muscle that causes a wrinkle in the overlying skin when it contracts, paralysis of that muscle prevents the wrinkle from forming. The effects of Botox are most noticeable in dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that are only present when the muscle is able to contract. As we get older and lose elasticity in the skin, a permanent crease can form leaving a wrinkle that is noticeable even without muscle contraction. Botox does not get rid of these wrinkles, but may help soften them. It’s vital that we convey the world of difference between the original medical product produced by Allergan, and some the cheaper alternatives. These lower cost versions are often to be found in use at what the media like to call ‘Botox Parties’, or some lower priced unregulated places offering injections. Simply

put, the effect they produce will last less long, and to compound this shortening of effect, some unscrupulous provider’s also ‘water down’ the product injected into the unsuspecting patient, thus even further reducing the value gained from this supposedly ‘cheaper’ treatment. So, BEWARE, many individuals or companies offering cut-price Botox treatments inject smaller amounts, inferior products and at higher dilutions. This will substantially lower their costs, as well as reduce the overall effect and will reduce the time between treatments. Finally, for true peace of mind, seek out a company offering injections who also include a free two week review after each previous full treatment, so the doctor can assess the effect, and where required, can top-up or extend the treatment area to ensure the best possible outcomes for their patients. Next: The Cottage Surgery has chosen to join forces with the West Midland’s Premier ‘Injectable Specialist’ and plan to bring you details of his development of an amazing process of Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty, or commonly known as ‘Nose Jobs’ in everyday parlance . The benefit of the ‘Non Invasive’ procedure is that it will allow a patient to have the Rhinoplasty performed, and then not suffer the usual 3 to 5 weeks away from work or social life, by removing the need to suffer from very apparent swelling, bruising and bandages. Look out for a full and detailed explanation of this ‘game changing’ use of Dermal Fillers accompanying our next clinic announcement in the next edition of the Staffordshire Outlook. To arrange a friendly confidential consultation that is totally free and without obligation or to receive a Patient Guide about the treatment that interests you please call 01384 940498 or via www.cottage-surgery.co.uk

with different genres such as Jazz, Disney, Motown and Rock. They are a very friendly, mixed age group who enjoy singing and socialising at their weekly rehearsals. They perform each year at The Prince of Wales Theatre in Cannock as well as other shows throughout the year at a variety of events, from churches to weddings and larger concert venues.

Cannock’s unique four part harmony singing group, Chase Harmony, are on the lookout for new ‘harmonisers’ to join their ranks, in particular they are keen to encourage male vocalists to join the Tenor and Bass sections now, ready for their next show in March 2014.

The show is called ‘Musical Memories’ and includes well known, feel good, favourites such as songs from Calamity Jane, West side Story, Grease and Fiddler on the Roof to name but a few. Chase Harmony are very diverse and while their speciality is music from the shows, they do challenge themselves

The group meets on a Monday evening, 7.30 until 10 pm at Mill Street Methodist Church in Cannock. You can find out about us on our web site (chaseharmony@ weebly.com). So all you budding harmonisers interested in finding out more or in joining us please contact either Ann on 07989 362980 or Maggie on 07971 968424.

iabetes D t: is tr ia d o P e h T sk A What is Diabetes Mellitus? This is a condition where you have raised blood glucose levels (called hyperglycaemia) due to a metabolic disorder.

There are two main types of diabetes: TYPE I – (Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients control their diabetes with insulin TYPE II – (Non Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients may control their diabetes through diet, tablets or sometimes insulin. Both of these types of diabetes can be harmful to feet. It is essential that everyone with diabetes of either type visit a Podiatrist regularly for a 6 – 12 monthly check up and whenever they have foot problems. Your podiatrist may recommend a much more frequent visit.

Why should diabetics see a Podiatrist? Diabetes is directly linked with profound changes to your feet. The circulation to 44

and around your feet can deteriorate meaning you are more susceptible to infection, less likely to heal quickly and your skin quality reduces meaning it is easier to damage. The sense of feeling in your feet can also reduce so that it is possible to damage your feet and not know about it. It is important we monitor your feet regularly so that we can detect these changes early on. Even some seemingly simple problem like corns, callus or toenail cutting could cause much bigger problems like ulcers, infection, gangrene, and at worst amputation if not treated properly.

Basic Guidelines for Diabetics • Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly – especially between the toes, and file nails. • Apply an aqueous cream such as E45 to your feet daily but not between your toes. • Check your feet daily for anything unusual – colour changes, breaks in the skin, swelling, discharge etc.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

• Always wear shoes or house slippers on your feet to protect them. • Ensure your shoes are the correct fit and are adjustable – 2 cm heel, laced shoes are the best.

Warning Signs Redness, Swelling, Pus, Discharge, Pain. Diabetes health care is a key part of a podiatrists job role.

Made To Measure How pleased would you be if you could provide made to measure education for your child? Or on the other hand, how much would you appreciate it if your child was able to measure up to the standards of any higher educational institutions or workplaces? With so many restrictions on what we can and can’t do in schools it is refreshing that as an independent school we can still adapt the curriculum to provide the best fit for your child. We regularly throw in an extra GCSE where there is a particular skill. Like Meghan who has recently joined the school in year 8 after a year in France. She will take her GCSE this year after a few lessons to polish her writing skills. Or Charlotte who has decided that she would like to take Music GCSE in a year just for fun. We have been known to add an extra A Level where someone want to study more than the usual four. Similarly we occasionally reduce the number of GCSE for example when a child is struggling with Dyslexia. We can offer unusual combinations and we tailor your child’s curriculum to get

what we know are the best results for them. In short we have the experience to know what the right decision when it comes to subjects. In a school where the children are known by all and are treated as individuals they cannot hide at the back of a class nor evade the issue if they are not working hard. However the focus is not just on education. Our children become well rounded young adults who expect to do their best at all times. They have ambitions to do the best that they can. Some have very specific aims like Felicia who wants to be a vet. She was almost written

off as a failure at her previous school and was told she would never pass maths GCSE. Now she is studying five A levels including Maths and only last week received her first offer of a university place to become a vet. She, like many others will take their experience here at Chase Grammar and will measure up well to the needs of the wider world as they take their next steps in life. So how do we raise expectations and make sure that children achieve their full potential? It may seem odd but we make the work easy. We start with the very basic skills and we work at these until they are secure. We create secure foundations for all the future knowledge that will sit upon these foundations. This builds confidence and develops the right skills for the future. higher up the school we encourage students to try. Universities may say that they only require three A levels for entry to the courses but if you aim at four or even five, you are more likely to get what you need and if you get more, then it will only impress employers more. In a way it is like the old adage “If you want something doing, ask a busy person”. We like our students to be kept busy. Those who achieve more are those who aim high and try to accomplish more.

Testimonials Dear Mr Dalton, Many thanks for the work below. Please use the following reference: ”Our son, Sandeep was with Mr Dalton for a short time, during which his English improved significantly. His descriptive writing skills developed to such an extent that he secured an A* in his mock exam. Mr Dalton teaches in an engaging and committed manner. He values his students as individuals and genuinely helps them improve their English skills. I would recommend him as a tutor to anyone.” Regards, Sub Dear Mr Dalton,

Having worked as Head of English, GCSE exam marker and Head of English GCSE’s I have a wealth of experience teaching in schools. I am now working as a consultant for an ‘Outstanding’ School and I am rated as an ‘Outstanding’ teacher according to Ofsted requirements. I now specialise in freelancing for GCSE students (or those preparing for starting the GCSE years) only. This is my area of authority and an area that I know I can make students shine.

Based on sheer enthusiasm and tremendous progress of my other children: Joanna and Greg, I would like to ask whether it would be possible to start KS-3 tuition for my youngest daughter Alinka. She is in year 8 at the very same school of St. Thomas Aquinas. Hoping for the favourable response, Mrs Torlinski I received my results for the Romeo and Juliet and Midsummer Nights Dream, my mark was 37/40 which i am very happy with. remember us in their will or make regular donations through their workplace; the many customers who year on year visit our shops either as customers or donating items to sell; and of course the many volunteers who offer their time free of charge so that we can provide the very best level of care to hundreds of families across the Black Country. Compton Hospice would not be able to carry out the incredible work it does were it not for your support. Without your kindness, generosity and support we would not receive such heart-warming feedback as this from the people for whom we care: “If I’ve needed Compton, they have been there for me.” “Knowing that you are getting the right help, from professionals that will take you on the right path – I couldn’t ask for anything more than that.” “It’s just a lovely place to be, and without it I wouldn’t be as positive as I am now about my condition.” “Compton Hospice has given me the help, support and care that I needed at a very troubled time in my life. Without it I don’t know what I would have done.”

Over the last year Compton Hospice has supported in excess of 2000 patients and families affected by life limiting illnesses. As an organisation we have worked hard to maintain an excellent level of care for our patients and making a difference to people’s lives at a very difficult time. We do this by treating people, not conditions, whether their needs are physical, psychological, social or spiritual. Each year we provide our care and support to patients and families free of charge. The cost of delivering such care amounts to just under £6 million per year of which we only receive a third from government. This means we need to raise approximately £4 million ever year in order for us to be able to keep our services running. Although this may seem an incredible amount of money, people forget that the hospice not only cares for people in the inpatient unit (ward), but also in our Woods Therapy Day Centre as well as out in the community. Our Community Nurse Specialists and Hospice at Home team made over 6,500 visits to patients in their homes this year. We are therefore incredibly grateful to everyone who contributes to raising much needed funds on our behalf in order to keep our services running. We are always delighted to hear of the different ways people have gone about fundraising and our eternal thanks and gratitude go to all of you – from those who take part in our various events or choose to organise their own fundraising activities; the many businesses and company’s who adopt us as their charity partners; the trusts and grant making bodies who offer their support to the hospice; those who chose to 50

Development g n si u o H d n A a re A New Play urnout T l a y o R A h it W d e h c Laun Representatives from Cannock Chase Council and partners were joined by royalty for the community fun day which accompanied the opening of the children’s play area at the newly-completed Monach Park housing development at Elizabeth Road in Cannock. The guests included royal lookalikes for the Queen and Prince William, who joined residents to mark the completion of 150 new homes which have transformed an estate originally built 60 years ago and named to honour the Queen’s coronation. The £17 million housing redevelopment is the result of a successful partnership between Cannock Chase Council, Waterloo Housing Group and house builder Lovell, which has replaced worn-out concrete houses with 150 stylish and spacious new family homes.

L/R: Cllr Gordon Alcott, Cllr Dennis Dixon, ‘Prince William’, ‘Her Majesty the Queen’, Cllr Frank Allen, Cllr George Adamson.

Councillor Frank Allen, Portfolio Leader for Housing said “I am absolutely delighted with the transformation. The 2-year housing regeneration project has created homes which residents can be proud of and is to the betterment of the area. The community event marks the successful partnership working of all agencies involved and is the way forward in the future.”

The redevelopment has also provided attractive public open space, a children’s play area and a newly laid road through the estate. The community fun day was organised by Waterloo Housing Group with support from Lovell and local community groups and offered residents a host of information and free activities.

The penalty is £100. You’ll still have to pay this even if: • Your return is just a day late. • You have no tax to pay. • You pay all the tax you owe before 31 January 2014.

HMRC are reminding taxpayers that the deadline for filing self-assessment tax returns is fast approaching. According to their website: ‘You must send your online tax return by midnight on Friday 31 January 2014. If your online tax return is late, you’ll have to pay a penalty. This applies

even if you have no tax to pay or if you pay all the tax you owe on time.’

The longer you delay, the more you’ll have to pay. If your tax return is three months late, you’ll have to pay a penalty for each additional day it is late. If it’s six months late, you’ll have to pay a further penalty and another final penalty if it’s 12 months late. Together these could add up to a penalty of £1,600 or more.

What happens if you miss the deadline?

Don’t send a paper tax return now the deadline was 31 October 2013. You’ll have to pay a £100 penalty straight away if you do and the daily penalties above will start even earlier. Send it online instead.

raddock C n h o J h it W s re y T r Winte Winter tyres, or cold weather tyres as they are also known, will be the key to keeping Britain moving over the coming months. This is thanks to their specialist compound and tread design which provides drivers with superior grip and control in wet and dry conditions once the temperature dips below 7˚C. The cold weather conditions from two years ago look set to return with Forecasters predicting moderate to heavy snowfalls in parts of the UK. This follows Met office data showing that the average temperature levels last year remained at below 7 °C for six months making cold weather tyres suitable for use from October – March. With demand for cold weather tyres expected to be high, we recommend pre-ordering your set of winter tyres from John Craddock to avoid any delays in getting your tyres fitted and remaining safe on the roads. Do I have to drive more slowly with winter tyres? Tyres are rated for the maximum amount of speed and weight they should carry. Typically winter tyres have a lower speed rating than the summer tyre for your car. However, even an H rated tyre has a maximum speed of 131mph so in winter conditions – this should not compromise your driving. Regardless of the stated maximum speed, please observe the speed limit at all times. Do winter tyres wear out quickly? Winter tyres last as long as summer tyres and perform better in winter conditions. Depending on your mileage, they may last

for 2 or 3 winters and so save on the wear on your summer tyres – postponing their replacement. Why should I buy 4 tyres in a set? Due to superior grip from winter tyres, cars should be fitted with 4 winter tyres or 4 summer tyres, of the same speed rating and the same load index. We will not undertake any requests to fit tyres where the total number of winter or summers tyres, upon completion, would be less than 4. Do I need to change over my tyres when it’s above 7˚C? We recommend that come March when it should be averaging nearer 7 degrees in the morning, you change back to summer tyres. We will contact you to arrange the “swap” back the following season. Are winter tyres really for when it snows? They are designed for optimal safety in the cold, wet, ice and snow conditions below 7 degrees. Do I need to inform my insurance company that I have winter tyres? Some insurance companies require notification that winter tyres are fitted to a car or van. Please contact your insurer for more information. Please contact John Craddock on 01543 577207 for your winter Tyres.

ss Country ro C 0 4 V o lv o V : d er H e Not of th by Rob Taylor

Rob Taylor gets behind the wheel of the new Volvo V40 Cross Country for an education in how the Swedes succeed where others fail. History has not been kind to the big old Volvos of the late eighties and early nineties: those designed with a ruler and set square, driven almost exclusively by Geography teachers and beloved by Fido for boot-space alone. Stronger than Hercules and packing more metal than Metallica, they were at all times - not just during a thunderstorm - the safest place to be on the road, but never the coolest. Yet today’s Volvo is a different matter. Today anyone behind a wheel emblazoned with the now Chinese-owned Swedish marque’s logo can consider themselves cooler than a snow-topped Scandinavian pine tree. Buying a Volvo is demonstrably intelligent and left-field and implicitly shows taste and discerning, as opposed to pack-following. Though not quite a Swedish sex-bomb, the new Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country SE Lux Nav AWD is a handsome machine which perfectly captures the zeitgeist. But with a Scandinavian twist. And the best thing is, sensible-shoes car buyers still have all of the very latest crash and safety technology to protect them, because Volvo still leads the field in this arena. The latest addition to the V40 line-up, the Cross Country is, in effect, a £1,000 cosmetic pack which tacks a roof rack, chunky plastic bumpers, side-skirts and skid-plates onto the standard model, giving it a rugged, automotive Country Casuals look. But it’s not all lip-service to off-road pretension. When allied to the range-topping £33,875 T5 model, the V40 is all-wheel-drive and commands the road with unerring levels of grip. Stable in all weather and with a supple and absorbent suspension set-up which is more than able to keep every pothole and road gremlin out of the cabin, this leviathan can hit 60 mph from zero in six seconds and reach 146 mph, courtesy of the same 254 bhp, 265lb ft torque 2.5 litre turbo petrol engine made famous by the old Ford Focus ST. Heavier than a normal V40, the Cross Country also rides 40mm higher and it is from this lofty and regal throne that you survey the symphony of ergonomic genius at work inside. Everything is precisely where it ought to be. Like the very best kind of butler, the V40 keeps a very well organised and logically 62

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

laid-out cabin. Every switch is exquisitely tactile and within easy reach; everything is well lit and intelligently set up; everything is beautifully crafted and of the highest quality. Thank you, Jeeves. You may not buy this car with your heart but for your head, it’s a no-brainer - that is, if you are loathe to mix it with the enfeebled dullards who covet anything German just because Mr and Mrs Next-Door own one. Admittedly this particular T5 model will not be for everyone: it may offer a respectable combined fuel economy figure of 34 mpg, produce just 194 g/km of Co2 and be packed with gizmos like Hill Descent Control et al, but with added options it’s easy to nudge the price-tag up to around £40,000. And despite its considerable power plant and five-cylinder burble, it’s not a sporty vehicle - even with its clever six-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox - and will thus be judged on cost alone. However, choose the 1.6 litre D2 and - though shorn of all-wheel-drive - you have a compelling package, with the V40 range starting at £22,595. Like Swedish actress Greta Garbo who always did it her way and desired only to be “left alone” - the Volvo V40 is the individualist’s choice.
