Tettenhall College SWIMMING ACADEMY PROVES TO BE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL A dedicated swimming academy set up at Tettenhall College is going from strength to strength, with pupils proving successful in prestigious regional and national competitions. Over the last year, Prep School and Senior School Swimming Academies have been established under the expert training of instructor Tracy Bate, with coaching sessions held three times a week. Two mornings, before most people have even had their breakfast, young swimmers aged eight upwards at Tettenhall College are already enthusiastically starting their days with laps of the School’s pool.

The day was an huge success, with many Tettenhall College swimmers finishing in the top three places in their Heats. Most notably, Year 7 pupil Kate Woodman, is now heading for the ISA National finals after an outstanding freestyle race and will be representing the Midlands area in the individual freestyle and medley relay. In addition, Prep School Academy Swimmers took part in the ISA Midlands Area Junior Schools Swimming Championships and were a credit to the school. Special congratulations were given to the Year 4 boys’ freestyle relay team who were crowned Midland Champions after a nail biting race.

The pupils are dropped off at 7.15 am, dressed in an array of animal onesies with their swimwear underneath, ready to start their training with a splash, undertaking speciallydesigned individual programmes. After training, they enjoy a hearty breakfast with the School boarders. A third session is held at lunchtime on a different day.

Director of Sport, James Bullock, said: “All of our swimmers gave a fabulous account of themselves, more than holding their own in a top class field. The performances given by the swimmers, represents a year of hard work and effort put in during their Academy Training and we are very proud of them all.”

Their dedicated efforts are certainly paying off. Earlier this month, 22 swimmers from Years 7–13 represented Tettenhall College in the ISA Midlands Area Senior Schools Swimming Championship Gala, held at Walsall. There were another 15 participating schools from the Midlands area and, of the 52 events, TC swimmers competed in 38 heats.

He said the Academy was proving very successful and was part of a wider programme of swimming at the School.

Swimmers swam in Year Groups doing front crawl, backstroke, breast stroke, butterfly, Individual Medley and Medley Relays. Those who achieved fastest times in the heats were competing to swim at the National Finals being held in London, at the Olympic Park Arena.

“We are very lucky to have our own heated indoor pool at Tettenhall College and we ensure children take part in swimming lessons from pre-school upwards,” added Mr Bullock. “It’s a very important skill to learn and an essential part of our sports curriculum. Younger children enjoy lessons with their class teachers so it is a natural part of school life and they are made to feel safe and confident in the pool.”

Rotary Charity Quiz DONATED THEIR PRIZES BACK TO THE CHARITY The Rotary Club of Cannock held its annual charity Quiz at The Chase Golf Club on Thursday 17th November 2016. The Club was delighted to welcome teams from across the area to this light hearted general knowledge quiz in aid of Rotary Charities.

Christmas lunch for the elderly on 13th December 2016 and is providing funds to enable a number of disadvantaged local children to attend a special Rotary event ‘Kidsout’ a Christmas event at Drayton Manor theme park early in December.

The quiz master for the evening was Rotarian Mel Morgan and the event was organised by the community service committee who raise funds for local good courses and charities. The funds raised on the night were boosted by the generosity of the winning teams who all donated their prizes back to the charity and this together with the proceeds from the raffle resulted in over £550 being raised on the night. The Rotary Club of Cannock President Harold Bould thanked everyone for taking part and also gave a vote of thanks to the management team and staff at The Chase Golf Club who so generously gave the venue free of charge for this charity event. The Rotary Club of Cannock plans to use the money raised to benefit the local community and has already arranged a

Penn Singers OPEN EVENING

In October 1947 about 15 members of Penn Ratepayers Society met with the intention of forming a mixed voice choir. They were known as Penn Choral and later as the choir grew became Penn Singers. The choir sings a wide variety of music from challenging classical pieces, popular music and songs from the shows. We organise five major concerts a year mainly at Penn United Reformed Church as well as accepting invitations at other venues. Small groups from within the choir also sing at weddings, funerals and residential homes when invited. As well as supporting Compton Hospice we also aid other charities. This year our charity is Leonard Cheshire Home, Lloyd Hill. We have had great success in the last few years fundraising for our nominated charities. Our audiences show their appreciation with their amazing generosity. A total of £16,800 has been raised in the past four years.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY 2017

We are holding an Open Evening on the 16th January 2017 at Penn United reformed church. We welcome new members into our choir and if this of interest, please come along and join us.

Competition Anita and Me One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see Anita and Me on Sunday 14 Feb at 7:30pm.

Meera Syal’s much-loved novel bursts into life on a UK tour after a sell-out performance in 2015. The touring production will open and premiere in Wolverhampton at the Grand Theatre from 14 – 18 February 2017. This poignant coming-of-age tale follows Meena, a young girl growing up in the only Punjabi family in a 1970s Black Country mining village. Meena spends her days happily getting into scrapes with the other local children until one day the impossibly cool Anita enters her life. Suddenly Meena knows exactly who she wants to be but is Anita all that she seems? Soon Meena’s world is turned upside down as she is caught between two very different cultures. Anita And Me paints a comic, poignant, compassionate and colourful portrait of village life in the era of flares, power cuts, glam rock, decimalisation and Ted Heath. It has been adapted for the stage by the multi-awardwinning Tanika Gupta from the bestseling book by Meera Syal. Meera is an acclaimed comedian, actress and writer whose TV credits include the BBC comedy series Goodness, Gracious Me and The Kumars at No. 42. With Shobna Gulati (Coronation Street, dinnerladies) as Daljit. Meera Syal said “I’m delighted that Anita and Me is touring the UK. It is amazing to think of so many people engaging in this story - particularly young people, who like me as a child, may be wondering how they fit in!” Tickets for Anita and Me from 14 – 18 February 2017 are now on sale from the Grand Theatre Box Office, online at grandtheatre.co.uk or by calling 01902 42 92 12. 10 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY 2017

direct help to 37 women in the Cannock area alone. Kathy introduced a woman who has been a client of Pathway and who now works with them supporting other women. She told the audience her story and it was very powerful, enabling others to understand a little of the way a victim of DV can feel. She said that the bravest thing she ever did was to make that first step and call the help line - and although it has been a long process she has never looked back. Alison Jackson of the worldwide charity Look Good Feel Better for cancer patients spoke of the free beauty workshops provided locally at New Cross and Stafford Hospitals. Cosmetics are donated by some of the large beauty houses and each woman who goes along to a workshop not only receives help and advice but also a bag of beauty goods valued at around £200. about our diet. We need to maintain a balanced diet which includes carbohydrates, fats, fibre and protein - cutting anything out completely can bring its own problems. The evening gave the opportunity to talk to a colour analyst, nail technician, breast care specialist, podiatrist and staff from St Giles Hospice as well as the speakers. There was a free prize draw and one lucky woman won a basket packed with pamper goodies. There was a great ‘buzz’ with everyone finding the evening informative and interesting an added bonus for Cannock Soroptimists is that a number of the ladies are keen to come along to a meeting and find out more about the club and the organisation. More information can be found at www.facebook.com/SICannock or www.sigbi.org/cannock-and-district/

Emma bought sweets for Cannock Soroptimists were entertained at their us to try with rhubarb and meeting on Nov 22nd by Emma Barran-Scott custard a great success Fiona Ford, who founded Fresh Hair, a bespokebeing wig fitting who ran the sweet shop at the Back-to-back service for cancer patients and who is a pastold winner of SI while fashioned acid houses in Hurst Street, Birmingham for five drops were extremely acidic years. The title of her presentation was “Sweet and something of an acquired taste. She also introduced Heritage”: she told the group all about the almost all of us to throach drops which were made in history of sweet making in Birmingham and Birmingham and known by everyone in the city but almost the Black Country, from its beginnings in the unknown everywhere else. Only one member who’d grown up in Birmingham remembered these aniseed flavoured Victorian era through to the present day. Along boiled sweets, but we all enjoyed tasting them. the way we were reminded of almost forgotten Lilian Hyde echoed the thoughts of us all when she thanked sweets such as aniseed balls, sweet tobacco, Emma for a most entertaining and well researched talk which sherbet and kali crystals in a paper bag. had bought back childhood memories for us all.

It was a revelation to many of us that some of these sweets are still made locally while others such as Bluebird toffees, remembered with such fondness by members, are no longer made in Birmingham.

Please follow all of Cannock Soroptimists activities on their website: www.sigbi.org/cannock-and-district or on their face book page: www.facebook.com/SICannock

We also learned that herbal sweets were some of the earliest sweets to be mass produced, probably because the working conditions and polluted air in the industrial areas meant that workers needed help with their coughs and bronchitis and as a visit to the doctor cost money, two ounces of cough sweets were a cheaper and more pleasurable alternative.

BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION In October, to make way for new chairs and sofas, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital donated all the unwanted furniture in their patient reception areas to the British Heart Foundation. By recycling unwanted furniture, the hospital is playing its part in helping to fund vital heart research. In the first week of the donation over £300 was raised. Established over 50 years ago, the British Heart Foundation’s mission is to win the fight against cardiovascular disease and prevent people from dying prematurely or suffering from heart disease. Through the advances in science that donations have helped fund, the lives of millions of people with heart disease have been transformed. Many people are alive today thanks to research funded by the British Heart Foundation and even more have a better quality of life because of it. Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital Sales & Services Manager Sarah Hussain was delighted to find out about re-using the furniture by donating it to be sold in the British Heart Foundation shops, saying, ”We have been refurbishing all the public areas of the hospital and as a result had lots of furniture we are no longer able to use or need. I contacted the local office of the British Heart Foundation and they came by in a van and 14

collected the redundant furniture to take to the shops which need it. I would encourage other hospitals and offices to get involved if they have spare old furniture when they are refurbishing with new. It was really straightforward and, as a hospital, it is good to feel we are doing something worthwhile to help patients in other ways too”. Viv Harris, British Heart Foundation shop manager, said: “We’re so grateful for Nuffield Health’s generous donation.BHF shops completely rely on the support of the community to keep us running and it is only with their generous donations and custom to our shop, that we can provide essential funding towards our pioneering research into coronary heart disease, the UK’s single biggest killer”. The UK and Ireland tour has two different programmes of films to choose from, each lasting about 2 hours, with free prize giveaways at each screening. The full film programme will be announced in early January. Programme highlights will include:

Cannock resident receives Legion d’honneur medal LAST TO BE TAKEN OFF THE BEACH AT DUNKIRK Amanda Milling, Member of Parliament for Cannock Chase, has presented 96 year old Mr Frederick Donald Hall, of Cannock, with a Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur medal, for his efforts in the D-Day landings. Frederick, who was a member of the Royal Artillery Regiment, took part in D-Day on the 6th June 1944, storming Juno beach with Canadian forces. Frederick came out unhurt but was wounded five days later when a grenade was thrown into the back of Landover he was travelling in. Frederick received shrapnel wounds and was also shot in leg. He was repatriated back to a hospital ship in the English Channel. Before D-Day, at the start of the war, Frederick had been part of the forces delaying the German advance on the Dunkirk evacuation. At 19 years old Frederick’s efforts helped buy time for besieged forces in Dunkirk and he saw action laying traps from Belgium back to Dunkirk and engaging German forces in order to slow the German advance, efforts that saw him awarded the Belgium Medal. His unit was one of the last to be taken off the beach at Dunkirk and he was evacuated on a Thames Estuary pleasure cruiser.

Amanda Milling said: “It was my absolute honour to present the medal to Frederick. Frederick’s stories are amazing and I can only imagine the challenges and pressure he faced in Belgium and again on D-Day. He is a real hero and deserves our thanks and admiration.” The French Government is presenting Allied forces who took part in D-Day the Legion d’honneur medal as a way of thanking those who liberated them during the Second World War. Sylvie Bermann, the French Ambassador in London, wrote to Frederick saying: “As we contemplate this Europe of peace, we must never forget the heroes like you, who came from Britain and the Commonwealth, to begin the liberation of Europe by liberating France. We owe you our freedom and security to your dedication because you were ready to risk your life.” Amanda Milling presenting Mr Frederick Donald Hall his medal.

10,000 crocus bulbs donated to Hednesford Park THE ROTARY CLUBS MISSION IS TO RID THE WORLD OF POLIO Cannock Chase Council and local volunteers have started to plant the 10,000 bulbs donated to Hednesford Park and support the Rotary Club’s plight to eradicate polio.

Mike Mellor from The Rotary Club “The Rotary have been supporting the rid the polio campaign for over 30 years, we are delighted that Cannock Chase Council, volunteers and the Friends of Hednesford Park were able to support us and help raise awareness of the work we are doing.”

The 10,000 purple crocus bulbs were donated by the Rotary Club in Cannock from money raised during various polio awareness fundraising events. The rotary clubs mission is to rid the world of polio, which still exists in parks of Northern Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The vibrant purple colour of the flowers represents the indelible purple dye that children dip their finger in to show they have been immunised. The bulbs are being planted around the park in various locations. Councillor Christine Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said “I am delighted that the Rotary Club has donated this huge amount of bulbs to Hednesford Park. I can’t wait to see the display of purple flowers in the spring and hopefully it will raise awareness of the Rotary Clubs ambition to rid the world of polio.” 28

DRY VERGE

No strong wind blowing off tiles

British Standards state that no reliance should be placed on the shear strength of mortar used in the filling and bedding. Mortar will eventually crack, in contrast, Dry Verges are mechanically fixed and each unit individually screwed. With the next unit interlocking giving extra strength and hiding the screws. This offers the maximum protection against strong winds and water penetration, giving you long term protection with a neat, attractive appearance and with none of the ongoing costs associated with Mortar.

Prevents entry of birds and large insects

WE COVER ALL ROOFING INCLUDING: NEW ROOFS/ FLAT ROOFS - Rubberised one sheet flat roofs – one sheet – No joints - Half the time to install compared to traditional felt or tar – Comes with a 20 year guarantee. EAVES PROTECTION SYSTEM – We cut back the rotten felt and insert the PVC Eaves Protection System

RIDGEFAST Ridgefast can be used with all standard ridges, tiles and slates. Ridgefast is more capable of standing up to the worst that the British weather can throw at it.

IT’S FAST Ridgefast is the fast and easy way to install a ventilated dry ridge. This unique system is designed to simply attach along the ridge and is far quicker than Mortar bedding.

IT’S UNIVERSAL Thanks to a unique fixing system Ridgefast can be used with all standard ridges, tiles and slates. Ridgefast is easily moulded to the shape of any tile or slate and the grey colour of the side flashing replicates a mortar finish.

The new Dry Ridge System is 100% UPVC and has been British IT’S VENTILATED Standards tested against warping, Provides a minimum ventilated area of 5000 sq.mm. per discolouring and cracking linearmetre and is suitable for ventilating flat tiles. You can use Ridgefast with ridge and gas terminals.

IT’S MAINTENANCE FREE The dry fixing method offers considerable advantages, not only in the speed of installation, but also in longterm economy and safety.

Dream Borders

IT WILL SOON BE TIME TO SHARPEN THE SPADE AND GET DIGGING The depth of winter is when I take time to dream about the summer and imagine how the garden is going to be when I’ve got it “just so”. Of course, the great thing about gardening is it’s never finished and there’s always one more tweak to be made. People tell me they dream of having a colourful herbaceous border but don’t know where to start.

Think of plants with lovely buds or young leaves to add interest early in the season. Oriental Poppies (Papaver) and Bearded Iris have short flowering season but the buds of the former and sword-shaped leaves of the latter start looking good weeks before the flowers. Giant Scabious (Cephalaria) have delightful buds as do Cornflowers (Centaurea). Cupid’s Dart (Catananche) is another with lovely, long lasting buds before the blue flowers open.

Firstly, the border will need some sun during the day or your choice of plants will be severely limited. You may be able to let more light in by pruning back or removing overlarge shrubs.

Traditional borders are planted with tall plants at the back and shorter ones at the front but also think about architecturally shaped plants that are taller than those around them. These add drama to a border. Good perennials for this are Veronicastrum, Bugbane (Actaea), Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia), Mullein (Verbascum) and Delphinium. The old adage was to “spend a penny on the plant and a pound on the hole”. Proper preparation is time well spent. Prepare the soil well by removing all weeds, digging deeply and adding compost or muck. I sprinkle a granular fertiliser every spring and top this up with bone meal in planting holes. Planting distances vary but a good rule of thumb is around 2ft / 60cm apart for large or very vigorous plants and 1ft-1ft 6in 30-45cm for others. You can of course plant more densely for a more rapid effect. Don’t forget to water plants even if it rains until the plants are growing strongly – don’t drown them though! Enough dreaming, it will soon be time to sharpen the spade and get digging for that dream border.

It’s a common “mistake” to dig a narrow border in a small garden. To my mind, it looks like the plants are cowering against the fence. Ideally make the border twice a deep as the tallest plant you’re going to put in it. My tip is to make it twice as deep as you first thought you would! I think the key is to choose one or two key colours for the border to repeat at intervals along the border. This repeating colour theme gives rhythm and visual structure to the planting and is probably more important than matching colour shades and tones within the planting.

Martin Blow

Pick some tough plants, that quickly bulk up, are easy to divide and flower again rapidly after planting as your repeating rhythm. I like Silk Flower (Sisyrinchium striatum) with its sword-shaped leaves and spikes of cream flowers. It is easy to divide and establishes a good clump quickly. Remember that reds shout out and look closer than they are. So, if you plant them at the far end of the border you’ll made the garden look shorter. Whereas blues are “receding” and have the opposite effect. The next consideration is season of interest. It would be lovely to have a border in full flower all through the season but this doesn’t happen with perennials. It’s tempting in spring or autumn to buy a selection of plants in flower and dot these around your garden to give you some colour everywhere. But this lacks impact, and grouping them together in a block or strip in the border or bed packs a real colour punch at lean times of year. 32

Rats have well developed senses of smell taste and touch. They have an acute sense of hearing, frequently using ultrasound to communicate, and are particularly sensitive to any sudden noise. Rats need to gnaw to keep their constantly growing incisor teeth worn down. They damage woodwork, plastic, bricks and lead pipes, and will strip insulation from electrical cables. Fires can easily be started after a rat has gnawed a cable. Gas and water pipes are also at risk. If you need any treatment against rats in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196

Kitchen flooring is important to think carefully about AFTER ALL, THE KITCHEN IS THE HEART OF THE HOME Kitchen flooring might need to be practical and hardwearing, but there’s no need for it to be dull. As kitchens often blend with dining areas into larger, open-plan spaces, the floor can be a great way of uniting different areas of the room, creating a cohesive finish. It’s a good idea to choose your flooring at the same time as your cabinetry, putting together a palette of colours and materials. You might opt for neutral tiles in large formats, or those with pattern and texture to add a burst of colour to your kitchen. If you love the look of wood but want the look without the practical drawbacks, why not opt for wood effect tiles? Advancements in digital imaging technology mean flooring which mimics the look of wood can be produced, offering a more hardwearing, affordable option.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY 2017

A natural material such as stone is always a popular choice and lends authenticity to a scheme. Natural stone ranges from beautifully veined marble to rustic travertine tiles, all of which have their own unique markings, pattern and texture.

CHOOSE YOUR MATERIAL Porcelain tiles are the most hardwearing and they are waterproof, stain resistant and scratchproof, as well as easy to maintain. Natural stone will last a lifetime if properly installed, but it’s porous so you must make sure it’s sealed. Wood-effect tiles are warm and offer character, they also provide durability and most beneficial of all, they don’t require maintenance like real wood

THINK ABOUT PATTERN The latest trend in flooring is patterned tiles as they can be used to create a feature floor, or to 'zone' an area, such as underneath a dining table. The key to using them in a kitchen is to keep the rest of your space monochromatic. Plain walls and simple furniture shapes will showcase them at their best.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING Generally, porcelain, ceramic and natural stone tiles are perfect for use with underfloor heating. If you are considering using underfloor heating with wood, ensure the correct mat is purchased. If you are unsure, don’t hesitate to contact us for assistance. If you are struggling for inspiration, pop into one of our stores, take a look around and meet the team who will be on hand to help develop your project.

Gent's Hairdresser Understands Importance of Good Customer Service Les Pickerill, who runs a popular gents’ salon in Cheslyn Hay, underwent surgery for a total knee replacement under the care of Mr Shreeram Deshpande in June 2016 and was back in the salon the following week. In his 53 year career as a gentleman’s hairstylist, Les has picked up a thing or two about what makes customers happy and that was exactly how he felt after his experience at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital. Les has always had a keen sense of style and is always extremely well presented which he says puts his customers at ease. He adds one of the main skills in providing a good service is the art of listening to others. His loyal clients range in age from infants up to men in their 90s and include some who even travel from abroad just to get their hair cut. It was as a result of conversations with clients that Les Pickering decided to search out the recommended consultant in the hope he would provide him with a new knee.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Deshpande, practising at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton, says, “With newer techniques, patients are up and walking the same day after knee replacement surgery, making their hospital stay much more comfortable and shorter, averaging 2.5 days. Patient motivation, which Mr Pickerill certainly has, is a key aspect in getting back rapidly to full mobility. The enhanced recovery method has significantly improved the patient experience.” A season ticket holder at Wolves, where Nuffield Health Wolverhampton is the Official Medical Partner, Les Pickering has sponsored the Man of the Match cut glass trophy for the last 10 years for The JW Hunt Cup Final. All monies raised from this amateur cup competition at the Molineux stadium are donated to The Beacon Centre for the Blind, which was presented with £12,000 last year and over the last 90 years has raised over £320,000. Patient Les Pickerill, with his wife Julie, in the MRI Suite at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital.

Les Pickering says, “The service at Nuffield Health was extremely slick and professional. The hospital in Wolverhampton is like a top quality hotel environment where all the staff thinks of your every need and provide for it straightaway. The auxiliary nurse who helped me shower and the physio Charlotte Lewis, who put me through my paces, were just first class and my consultant was A1 too.”

Rotary 10k Road Race More than 170 athletes braved the winter weather to take part in The Rotary Club of Cannock annual 10k Road Race on Cannock Chase.

A date has already been set for next year’s 10k race on the same demanding course November 19th 2017.

This is the 7th year that Rotary has held this event. Cannock Chase MP Amanda Milling, who has run in the race in previous years, signalled the start of this year’s race with an air horn at Cannock Chase Visitors Centre in Marquis Drive on Sunday 20th November. Most of competitors who were running for their own charities or to represent their athletic clubs, made their way around this challenging course with smiles on their faces despite the bad weather conditions. Winner of the race was Paul Thacker from Cannock and Stafford Athletics club in a time of 38.53 while first across the line for the women was Louise Booker from Aldridge in a time of 44.26.

L-R Cannock Chase MP Amanda Milling, Men’s winner Paul Thacker, Winning lady Louise Booker, Club President Harold Bould, Rotary District Governor John Sayer and Assistant Governor Margret Clewley.

The President of the Rotary Club of Cannock Harold Bould thanked the organisers and race marshals for their hard work which ensured the race was a success again this year. Money raised from the event will be used to support Rotary local and International good causes.

St. Valentine's Day - A Mystery of Love

As a nation we are not particularly prone to celebrating saints’ days. We don’t do as many parts of Europe do, hold fun-filled festivals to celebrate this or that saint’s memory. Few of us celebrate a saint’s day dedicated to ourselves as they do in France say. Indeed if you asked the average personin-the-street to name any saint and the day he or she is celebrated, St.Valentine’s Day would probably be the only one they could name with any certainty. Stranger still is the fact that this particular saint is no longer included on the Vatican’s ‘official’ list of saints. So who was this extraordinarily persistent saint, when did he live? Where did he come from? And why for goodness’ sake, does he represent everlasting and passionate love? There are several candidates. Some say he was a bishop from Terni who met a martyr’s death in Rome either during the time of Claudius the Second or perhaps Aurelian. If during the latter’s period of influence, then the date has been set at AD 271 with the event actually occurring on February 14th. Then there was a Roman priest martyred for his faith in AD 269, an Umbrian bishop executed in AD 273 and any of a series of nameless centurions who followed their Christian loved ones into the arena when they were condemned to martyrdom for their beliefs. Trying to relate the dates of these martyrs to February 14th is hardly possible because the calendar has been changed radically since those ancient times. February 15th saw the start of the Roman festival of Lupercalia which was a favourite time for Roman emperors to stage mass executions for the edification of the Roman people.

40

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY 2017

The Lupercalia was also a festival dedicated to the celebration of fertility and indirectly love. Young men roamed the streets dressed in the skins of sacrificial animals, in pursuit of any woman or girl they could catch. Any female touched by one of these young men was assured of her fertility in the coming year - for one reason or another! The river god Pan was also said to roam abroad at this time and could be encountered in the reeds by rivers and streams. Doubtless many an encounter took place but whether Pan was responsible for the result is an open question! The Romans brought the Lupercalia to Britain but it is pretty certain that a similar festival pre-dated its arrival. The Romans as usual, simply mixed and matched both religions and festivals and added them to their own extensive pantheon of gods and list of celebratory events. It is an interesting fact that only in Britain is this festival still observed. A similar custom once observed in France on the 1st day in Lent and dedicated to Pan and Juno is long defunct. When trying to trace the shadowy figure behind the legend, the fact that Roman soldiers were the main celebrants of the day does indicate a connection with that unfortunate centurion, though whether he died voluntarily for love, was executed for some misdemeanour or was killed accidentally while shepherding his prisoners into the arena, will probably never be known. The truth is the day is probably a composite of several Pagan festivals, Christianised at some time by missionaries in the way they did at the time and given the name of some unfortunate martyr who just happened to meet his death at around the appropriate date. The Lupercalia itself was eventually superseded by the Feast of Candlemass, and St.Valentine, whoever he was, was left on the calendar of saints because there was simply no one else to claim the day. One thing is certain, if he did indeed exist as a person, he would have been amazed to know how long his sacrifice would be remembered.

New Year NEW THEME

Welcome to 2017, in 2016 we looked at some quite interesting facts surrounding the name and history of each month. This year we thought it would be equally as interesting to look at the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac; exploring the traits attributed to each. Being born on the first or last day of a sign, in astrological terms, means being born on a cusp. Thus, there is a benefit from reading that sign and the sign that follows or precedes. Each month is ‘home’ to two Signs of the Zodiac, for January these are Capricorn and Aquarius.

Capricorn The Goat December 22nd – January 19th Element: Earth Ruling planet: Saturn Symbol: The Goat Stone: Garnet Life Pursuit: To be proud of their achievements Vibration: Powerful resilient energy Secret Desire: to be admired by their family and friends and the world at large

More Astrology Traits and Personality The Mountain Goat and Garden Goat: The sign of the high roller, Capricorns are regarded as the zodiac’s top, but also quiet, life and business achievers.

Ambitious, Cautious and Conservative: The one thing a Capricorn must always try to do is balance work with play; otherwise they can become too one-sided and work can replace true personal emotional fulfilment.

Responsible and Reliable: The rulership of Saturn - the planet representing responsibility, structure and hard work - ensures that Capricorns in their truest of expression, are ambitious, practical and superb organizers. As a friend, Capricorns can be relied upon to provide the strongest and most sympathetic pair of shoulders in the zodiac.

Aquarius - The Water Bearer January 20 - February 18 Element: Air Ruling planet: Uranus Symbol: The Water Bearer Stone: Amethyst Life Pursuit: To understand life's mysteries

Vibration: High frequency Secret Desire: To be unique and original

More Astrology Traits and Personality Trendsetters of the Future: At the Dawn of the Age of Aquarius, at this time, ready or not, your sign is regarded as the zodiac's leader. You are the trendsetter for the future.

Intellectual and Innovative: Those born under the sign of Aquarius not only march to a different drummer, they make up new music as they go along. They are 'mind oriented' individuals who relate on an intellectual level and their outlook is much more innovative and experimental than traditional.

Humanitarian and Objective: In everyday terms, most Aquarians are extremely humanitarian and often involved in social programs that assist others.

Socially aware: Aquarians are the zodiac's most mysterious and unusual people - and no two are anything alike. Those born under this sign - ruled by innovative and non-conformist Uranus. Aquarians are happiest when they have "something" to believe in and nurture. Competition Win tickets to see world’s largest gathering of Shire horses This month we’ve teamed up with the Shire Horse Society to give away tickets to the world’s largest gathering of Shire horses. Last year, the charity staged its national show at Staffordshire County Showground for the first time in its long history. And on 17th to 19th March, the show will trot back into the county – creating a colourful spectacle for all the family. It’s the perfect place to see the gentle giants of the horse world in all their finery, and to support the campaign to Save our Shires. Featuring stalls and children’s entertainment, as well as the all-important showing classes when pedigree Shires will be put through their paces in hand, in harness and ridden, the show is the flagship event for the Shire Horse Society. It’s also the first qualifier of 2017 for the heavy horse classes of the prestigious Horse of the Year Show, which attracts the very best of the breed and is held in October at Birmingham’s NEC. The Shire Horse Society campaigns to save the iconic Shire breed – a breed that was in danger of dying out just a few decades ago. Even now, fewer than 500 new foals are registered every year. “Our national show is the ideal day out for people who love horses and those who have a soft spot for the magnificent Shire horses. These animals have played such an important role in our history and fortunately they are now experiencing a resurgence in popularity thanks to the dedication of Shire horse owners and breeders,” said Shire Horse Society secretary Victoria Clayton. “We had great feedback from our members and also from the public after staging our show at Bingley Hall at Staffordshire County Showground for the first time in 2016, and we are delighted to be returning with a full three-day event in 2017." Tickets are now on sale via www.shire-horse.org.uk – discounted if bought in advance. Gates open on Friday 17th March at 8.30am and at 7am on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th March. For more details and ticket information about the show, visit www.shire-horse.org.uk or follow @saveourshires on Twitter or at www.facebook.com/shirehorsesociety Tickets to the show at Bingley Hall, Staffordshire County Showground, Weston Road, Stafford ST18 0BD, cost £10 in advance for adults and those aged 14 and over, and £8 in advance for children aged five to 13. These are £12 and £10 respectively on the gate. Tickets are valid for one day only. 52

Staffordshire’s first statue to regimental mascot

TO BE PLACED IN TAMWORTH

A public campaign has been launched to build a life-size bronze statue of Sgt Watchman V to honour all the mascots and handlers that have served the Staffordshire Regiment, as well as all the servicemen of the Regiment itself. The statue, to be located in Tamworth, would be the first statue in Staffordshire of the regiment’s mascot and serve as the newest memorial to the Staffordshire Regiment and the wider regimental family. Watchman is a familiar face to many people in Tamworth and a much loved mascot. Recently crowned the "Westminster Dog of the Year", all Watchman have attracted much public attention and love, over the many decades of service to the Regiment. Cllr Robert Pritchard said: “We can think of no more fitting tribute to the Regiment than a bronze statue of Sgt Watchman V. Watchman and their handlers carry out their duties on a voluntary basis and give up much of their time to carry out this important duty. We believe they deserve a statue to Watchman and his predecessors in a public place, to thank them for their selfless service to the Regiment and County.“ WO2 Greg Hedges, handler of Sgt Watchman V, said: “We are very humbled by this project, it was great to meet so many people who wanted to honour Watchman and the Regiment in such a public way.”

A life size bronze statue has now been commissioned and campaigners need to raise the funds. The estimated cost is £10k and they have already received £2k towards their goal. Tamworth MP Christopher Pincher said: “I am delighted to support the project and help Tamworth be the first town in the county to have a statue of Watchman as a symbol of our local military history. As Remembrance Sunday approaches it is an important time to honour and reflect on the sacrifices made by the men and women who protect our country. Sensory Garden to be introduced at St Luke’s Church Centre AN OASIS FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES Following a successful award of £12,000 from the Tesco’s Bags of Help campaign, Inspiring healthy lifestyles and Cannock Chase District Council confirm that the redevelopment of land behind St Luke’s Church Centre. The land which has recently been a hub for anti-social behaviour will be transformed into a sensory garden that reflects the outstanding natural beauty of Cannock Chase in an urban setting. Offering support for residents of Cannock looking to increase their levels of physical activity via green exercise, the project will also provide an oasis for those with disabilities and long term health needs.

Councillor Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport at Cannock Chase Council said: “I am delighted that we have been successful with the funding for the Chase Fit Sensory Garden. “This project will not only transform an overgrown piece of land it will also create a haven for those people with long term health issues.” The garden is expected to be completed by spring 2017. Could you help to create and maintain the gardens or perhaps or support the project by donating materials? We are looking to engage volunteers and local businesses to support the project and create an urban green gem for the community of Cannock.

Managing Director of Inspiring healthy lifestyles, Pete Burt said: “We are really grateful to Tesco for supporting this project. Seeing this garden come to life is a really exciting prospect for Inspiring healthy lifestyles and the local community. “We hope local residents will get involved and help us to look after this special place for future generations.” Plans for the garden include an informal section with trees and wild flowers and a more formal garden, which will include raised beds at varying heights to engage different users. A footpath will also be introduced connecting the underground to the town centre. Redevelopment of the land will also include a series of tree works, with removal of several trees for health and safety reasons and to allow the remaining trees to thrive. This will increase the amount of light in to the site, deter anti-social behaviour and open up the

Best Retailers of Cannock Chase Competition 2016 CANNOCK CHASE MP ANNOUNCES WINNERS Amanda Milling, Member of Parliament for Cannock Chase, has announced the eight local businesses who have been crowned Cannock Chase’s best independent retailers for 2016. In its third year, the Cannock Chase Best Local Shops & Market Stalls competition asked people to vote for their favourite independent retailers in Cannock, Rugeley and Hednesford. There were 8 awards up for grabs – with best local shops, best market stalls and a new category this year best café/restaurant. Voting closed on December 1st and the winners were announced on 3rd December as part of Small Business Saturday.

Only three businesses managed to defend a title from 2015. Bella’s Coffee House (Hednesford) and The Rug Stall (Cannock Market Stall) held on to titles from 2015 and Meat to Please You in Rugeley Market has now been voted the best market stall in Rugeley for three consecutive years.

Amanda visited each of the winners and presented them with the certificates to display to their customers.

Amanda said: “I would like to congratulate each of the winners in this year’s competition. I hope each of the winners enjoyed their early Christmas present. Part of Small Business Saturday, the competition is a great way of letting our local retailers know just how much their customers support them. Each of the winners asked me to thank their customers for voting for them. It was great to see some businesses defend titles as well as newcomers to our high streets claim prizes. Commiserations to the businesses who didn’t win this year, but as always, the competition was well fought by local businesses and we have eight very worthy winners.” For more information please contact Amanda Milling on 01543 877142 or e-mail amanda.milling.mp@parliament.uk. Attached are pictures of Amanda Milling MP with the winners in each category. For more information please contact Amanda Milling on 01543 877142 or e-mail amanda.milling.mp@parliament.uk.

Congratulations to Lotus Flower Consultancy who have been announced as the winner of the Best Management Consultancy Boutique UK, at the UK Corporate Excellence Awards 2016 Wendyanne Shapiro runs Lotus Flower Consultancy, a Midlands based management consultancy firm. In this engaging interview, Wendyanne’s enthusiasm and passion is evident throughout. Lotus Flower Consultancy specialises in organisational design, leadership and management development. The company’s services vary from consultancy, design and delivery of training interventions and bespoke solutions. In addition, they provide mentoring and coaching for individuals and teams. They get invited into small and medium sized businesses as a trusted partner, in various industries and sectors – both private and public, including financial services, healthcare, professional services, education, utility and manufacturing. Working predominately in the UK, the company is now stepping out into European and worldwide markets. Wendyanne explains the firm’s overall mission and what steps they take to achieve this. “Our primary aims are to drive cultural change and to increase performance and efficiency, through the engagement and enablement of employees. Ultimately, we work with people within a business regardless of role or title and our alignment remains on corporate objectives, performance outputs and outcomes. We operate using a tripartite model, where we look at the individual, the team and the organisation and how to maximise the relationships between the three. An important factor for us is to work with individuals and encourage them to be the best that they can be, here success and results happen as a by-product.” Whilst legislation can affect business this has not deterred Wendyanne from continuing to help clients as she explains. “Access to funding, support from local authorities and a general lack of skill, experience and resources are just some of the changes and challenges affecting our business. It is the ‘people strategy’ that is being most affected across the corporate landscape. We are being asked more often to help with maximising efficiencies and running costs for businesses, and as most people know – training and development is usually the first thing to disappear when finances get tight. We remain steadfast that our service is a long-term investment and that the true value will be realised when businesses have a multi-skilled workforce that is not only compliant and competent but also futureproofed.” Approximately 90% of Lotus’s business is coming to them direct from client recommendations, therefore the company’s reputation speaks for itself. Wendyanne discusses how Lotus stands out from their competitors. “We help people to look at their business through a different lens. We are invited in to provide another perspective, to offer the eyes and ears of a critical friend. We want to develop positive busines s relationships for the long term and become accepted as a part of the team. Rather than listing a portfolio of products we can provide we prefer to get to know and understand our clients - part of this involves orientation days and chemistry meetings. This enables us to offer bespoke advice and recommendations.”

Brexit and the impact on the economy is a concern for many businesses. However, at Lotus they believe that Brexit could be positive. “In general, the lack of clarity and uncertainty about what exiting means is having an adverse effect on the businesses we work with. Particularly as any change in legislation is likely to affect existing business relationships and will need to be considered for new markets. We are actively working with clients building their business readiness for pending changes, this includes focusing on commerciality, sustaining a competitive advantage, professionalising services and collaborating across differing environments.” As well as Brexit, Wendyanne discusses the other challenges that Lotus is facing. “A common challenge for us is ensuring we understand exactly what businesses need,” says Wendyanne. “Our role is to act consciously and critically, considering broader aspects of the ever-changing world such as, discrimination, diversity and equality as well as highlighting new generation approaches and thinking. We will consult and challenge to clarify expectations and requirements then design and deliver around that.” Lotus is looking to grow their portfolio in the future, as well as looking at how they can diversify as an organisation. As Wendyanne says herself, the firm want to remain “big enough to cope yet small enough to care.” With work in the UK and Europe, the firm also has work lined up in the United States and Singapore. Wendyanne is thrilled to have won this award as she tells us how being recognised in the industry is fulfilling. “We are delighted to have been nominated and recognised for this award. We’ve worked incredibly hard to get our name out there and to be acknowledged in such a highly competitive industry is amazing. The heart of our business has been based across the Midlands so this is a great way of confirming our acceptance in that space. We have always considered that we have a privileged role and honestly love what we do, this award has provided the endorsement we are doing it right.”

Top Winter Weather Tips for Pets REMEMBER THESE TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE THIS WINTER Know your dog’s limits! Some dogs are more susceptible to the cold than others. Shortcoated, thin, elderly, or very young dogs get cold more quickly – so adjust the amount of time they stay outside! If your dog enjoys being outdoors and you will be outside longer than a few minutes, consider outfitting it with a sweater or coat to keep it warm. Hypothermia and frostbite pose major risks to dogs in winter, so remember, if it is too cold for you, it is probably too cold for your dog!

Wipe their paws! During winter walks, your dog’s paws can pick up all kinds of chemicals including salt, antifreeze, or de-icers. Be sure to wipe off your dog’s paws when you return from walks to prevent him from licking it off and becoming sick. Purchase pet-safe de-icers for your home for an extra level of safety. And when wiping off your dog’s paws, remember to check for signs of injury, such as cracked or bleeding paws. Keep them on a lead! More pets become lost in the winter than any other season because snow can disguise recognisable scents that would normally help them find their way home. Prevent your pets from becoming lost by keeping dogs on leads and just in case you are separated from your pets, make sure their collars have up-to-date contact information and they are www.greatplainsspca.org/ veterinary-care/microchipping-services/”or“Microchipping Services” microchipped, which is now a legal requirement. Check your car! Cats often sleep in the wheel wells of cars during the winter months to keep warm. If you start your car and a cat is sleeping on your tire, it can be severely hurt or even killed by moving engine parts. Prevent injuries by banging loudly on your bonnet or beeping the horn before starting your car. This will wake up the cat and give it a chance to escape before starting the car. Avoid the ice! When walking your dog, be sure to avoid frozen lakes and ponds. Your dog could be seriously hurt or even killed if the ice breaks.

58

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY 2017

Leave them at home! Just as hot cars are dangerous for pets in the summer, cold cars pose a threat as well! Only take your pets in the car if it is necessary, and never leave them unattended. Be seen! Due to daylight savings, many of us are relegated to walking our dogs in the dark. Keep yourself and your dog safe by wearing reflective gear (clothing, lead, collar, etc) and keeping your dog close when walking on the street. Give them shelter! Ideally, all pets should live inside. If your pets live outdoors primarily, bring them indoors during subzero temperatures. For the rest of the winter, provide them with a dry, draft-free shelter that is large enough to allow them to sit and lay down comfortably, but small enough to conserve body heat. The floor should be raised a few inches off the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. Turn the shelter so it faces away from the wind and cover the doorway with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic. Also, pets that spend a lot of time outside need more food to replace energy lost from trying to stay warm. Use plastic food and water dishes instead of metal when the temperature is low enough, your pets’ tongue can become stuck to metal. Avoid spills! Antifreeze attracts cats and dogs because it is very sweet to taste, but it is extremely poisonous and can cause serious illness or death when ingested. Be sure to clean up any antifreeze that spills in your garage, and keep the bottle somewhere your pets cannot access.

Be prepared! Winter brings extreme weather that can cause power outages. Have an emergency plan and make sure they include your pets! Have an emergency kit with enough food, water, and medication to last your pets at least five days. Most likely you will never need it, but if you do, you will be thankful you planned ahead!

AUDI A3

BY ROB TAYLOR

A CLASS ACT

If you choose to buy an Audi A3 over a Volkswagen Golf then you make a conscious decision to pay more: more for style, more for badge, more for image. They are after all basically the same car underneath: both are made by the same company and are both brilliantly engineered but Audi is – purely in terms of marketing at least – the Taste the Difference range. And this newly face-lifted A3 is very tasty indeed. Driving an Audi – any Audi – is a demonstrable show of wealth, not stealth. Like ardent fashionfollowers who shop outside of the High Street and enthusiast wristwatch collectors who pay thousands of pounds to tell the time, Audi appeals to our sense of wanting what’s best, even if that doesn’t always make sense. Driven here in what will surely become a best-selling incarnation – the 1.6 litre 110 bhp TDI Sport – this A3 is as ever a student of evolution, forgoing the temptation to ‘reinvent’ its exterior styling; instead just the merest nip and tuck to a fold here, a crease there, has been attended to. Put it beside the last-gen version and I’m convinced that everyone will be able to tell which is the more modern of the two, but they will be equally unable to pin-down exactly what makes it so, because the changes are almost infinitesimal. Anyway aesthetic appeal is best left for photographers to describe, but 60

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY 2017

suffice it to say that it’s among the most eye-wateringly stylish family hatchbacks on the market. And yet this car is really all about the interior and it now has a spectacular party-piece: the optional virtual cockpit. As part of Audi’s £1345 Advanced Technology package this slick and incredibly cool display supplants conventional dials for seamless graphics and myriad integrated gizmos, which are displayed in high resolution on a 12.3 inch diagonal TFT screen. Drivers can switch between two views: in classic mode, the instruments appear as normal. In infotainment mode, however, a central window allows more space for the navigation map or shows lists for telephone, radio and audio; the rev counter and speedometer then appear as small round clocks. It’s well worth the money just to see the sat-nav system at work. Interior quality is unsurprisingly unsurpassed: soft-touch, tactile materials, well-damped switchgear and cool-as-ice metallic surfaces leave you in no doubt as to where your money (prices start at around £24,000) goes – because although it drives, rides and steers well, it’s no BMW when it comes to rewarding its driver. Be sure to keep suspension settings at their comfiest and don’t go too wild with massive alloys because on roads as Third World as the UK’s are right now, you may live to regret it.

It’s testament also to Audi’s interior design alchemy that I’m compelled to praise the newly redesigned air-vents – I promise you, these otherwise perfunctory tools are works of art in the A3. Furthermore there’s ample room in the front and rear of this five-door model to accommodate fully-grown adults in total comfort; seats are comfy and enrobed in fine fabrics too. Fit this 1.6 litre engine with Audi’s smooth and intuitive automatic gearbox and 16” alloys and you’ll creep underneath the fabled 100 g/km Co2 mark. Fuel economy is commendable (I managed nearly 55 mpg), however this engine still lacks some refinement when under-load and when driven briskly, on its way from zero to 60 mph (which it will cover in 10.7 seconds), and its handling through twisty sections of road leaves a lot to be desired – but does that really matter when all is said and done nowadays? More often than not we sit in traffic jams, with scant opportunity to ever find space enough to push our cars close to what they are capable of delivering. It’s much more sensible to concentrate upon the part of the car that’s available all of the time. That’s where Audi delivers big: stylish appearance allied to interior comfort and quality. And that’s what’s worth paying for.

FABULOUS SPECIAL EDITION

Special editions are just fabulous aren’t they? They are for collectors. They are for enthusiasts. They drip appeal and exclusivity. Get the right one and you have on your hands a future classic. And this new Jeep Wrangler 75th Anniversary Edition looks set to be just that. Just 85 will hit UK shores. Celebrating the iconic 4x4 brand’s 75th birthday and looking to the untrained eye like every other Wrangler ever produced – that is to say like an extra from Saving Private Ryan and therefore unlike everything else on UK roads – the Wrangler is a chunky piece of fantastic fun; rugged and muscular but with just the right (token) level of refinement. After all, few will ever take their Jeep – or any other heavy-duty 4x4 x (sic) that matter – to truly forge a path, over mountains and into the wilderness. However it’s nice to know that if civilisation should be destroyed and you are flung into an episode of The Walking Dead, you’ll have things covered, unless of course you go for the two-wheel drive variant that I’m testing; specifically 62

the 2.8 litre CRD auto, which is firmly built with the real world in mind. But don’t worry, like Bigfoot, there’s a pukka 4x4 version out there to be caught and driven too. Based on the Overland model, but with several key differences, including unique exterior styling and part-leather interiors, it’s priced keenly, considering its rarity, at just £36,435. Designed and developed in the USA, the Renegade offers buyers a little bit of individually for not a lot of compromise. No loutish ‘yee-hawwing’ is to be found anywhere, outside or in; it’s all strictly sensible business as usual for the resurgent Jeep brand. The exterior styling, while admittedly “Marmite”, is unquestionably different; it’s in equal parts tough and jovial, like a nightclub bouncer. Always keen to please, Jeep offers a decent cabin. Inside, the Wrangler 75th Anniversary gets ‘1941’ embossed leather heated seats in black or saddle brown and tangerine (leather with fabric inserts), bronze accents on air vents and grab handles, Sat-nav with an Alpine premium sound system and deep tinted glass.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JANUARY 2017

Get it out on the open road and you’ll appreciate its torquey and tractable character; with sympathetic driving only occasionally will the Wrangler demand for you to do much more than just enjoy the ride. You’ll be looking good while you cruise as well because the exterior features boast a bronze-finished front grille and 18-inch alloy wheels, bodycoloured dual top, Mopar slush mats, unique bronze and orange Jeep badges, and a dedicated 75th Anniversary badge. What you’ll also notice is a sensibly balanced steering set-up, a cabin with just the right amount of driver adjustments to keep you comfy and a ride that is well matched to UK roads. The cabin is pretty spacious, well-made and comfortable like a warm pillow. Immediately your eyes will point towards the ‘75th Anniversary’ badge and your heart will sing because you are driving something incredibly rare and demonstrably left-field. Put this on old Top Gear’s Cool Wall and it’ll be ‘Sub-Zero’.

A New Year - A New You!

Recent years have seen an explosion in demand for and acceptance of cosmetic procedures, both surgical and non-surgical. In a world where people are living longer and remaining active, more people want to keep looking fresh, to make sure they enjoy life; at ease with the way they look. More than ever, it is important that a thorough consultation takes place so that treatments are based on the needs of the individual, making sure that their aspirations can be matched by surgical interventions, fully informed of the limitation and possible complications. Identifying where and who should perform your surgery is essential. This is not a commodity that can be returned with a full refund or swapped for a different model. A well established provider of private healthcare in the West Midlands, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital is proud to offer patients the highest standards of consultation, safe treatment and aftercare, at affordable prices. Our hospital, based in Tettenhall for almost 40 years, is also the medical supplier to Wolves. Cosmetic and reconstructive surgery at our hospital on Wood Road is conducted in ultra-clean environments by a dedicated team of experienced cosmetic surgeons. All our cosmetic surgeons are highly qualified and hold all the relevant professional health accreditations – being part of the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, where their details can be found on www.baaps.org.uk and the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons. Procedures available include breast augmentation, uplift and reduction, body contouring, tummy tucks and liposuction, dermal fillers, face and neck lifts, brow uplifts, 66

eye, nose, ear and chin reshaping, mole removal and varicose vein treatments. For the last two years, we have been named twice as a top performing hospital, and the first Nuffield Health hospital, of 31 in the UK, to be awarded JAG accreditation for the highest clinical standards and best practice in Endoscopy. Most recently in a patient satisfaction survey when asked at the end of their treatment, “How likely is it that you would recommend this service to friends and family?” an impressive 100% of all the Wolverhampton patients surveyed said yes they would. Remember the training and experience of your surgeon makes the difference to your treatment outcome. With proper counselling and careful treatment, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery can have a powerful, positive impact on your life. To help you make the right choice, on 30th January we are holding a free mini consultation event for patients considering cosmetic surgery with Mr Naiem Moiemen, who has worked with Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital for the last 15 years. To book your place at our free cosmetic surgery event, or for more information please call 01902 793 269.
