DON’T LET BANKS
OR BUILDING SOCIETIES
OVERCHARGE YOU!
I have recently been introduced to a new client who was looking for advice regarding his final salary pension.
4
who has worked for a bank all their adult life could be expected to know if the company he had his mortgage with is providing him with a competitive rate however, I was staggered to find that for the last few years he has been paying a standard variable rate of 5.49%.
Part of our advice process is “getting to know our client” and to do this we complete an in depth financial fact-find to ensure we know exactly where we are starting from and more importantly where we want to go.
When I questioned this rate, he was under the impression that he was in a fixed rate deal and would suffer redemption penalties if he moved, however, on reviewing the annual mortgage statement, it was indeed a variable rate with no tie-ins.
This particular client has been employed by one of the major banks for almost 40 years and is looking to retire early next year. Now you may think that someone
To put this into perspective the interest he was paying each month on a £134,500 mortgage was £615.34 per month or £7,384 per annum.
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2018
One of his main concerns is that when he retires he needs to repay the mortgage debt, however, the maximum tax free cash sum from his final salary scheme he would receive is £111,831 which would leave him with a shortfall. He has no other savings that he can use towards the shortfall. His options regarding his pension are to take a full pension of £24,230 p.a. which he feels he could survive on or, take the tax free cash together with a reduced pension of £16,777 p.a. which he feels he would struggle to live comfortably on as this income has got to support himself and his wife. We then discussed his options with one of them being to transfer
his pension benefits from the Final Salary Pension Scheme to a Personal Pension. The transfer value being offered by the bank is £762,766 however, if this route is taken, all guarantees are lost and he would be dependent on future investment returns. This decision is not one to be taken lightly and indeed it is financially the biggest decision he will ever make in his life – does he opt for a guarantee or take control and responsibility of his retirement fund. We then looked at what was important and the financial needs that would come into play if the pension was transferred. The following points were of significance: If transferred the pension fund of £762,766 would give a tax free cash facility of £190,691 which is more than enough to clear the outstanding mortgage balance and he would have money to spare. When he dies the full value of any residual pension fund is inherited by his wife or his children if she died first. If it passed to his wife then on her death it would pass to the children. If death occurred before his 75th birthday the whole pension pot is paid out tax free which would certainly become a family legacy. If transferred he would have the ability to take a greater income until the state pension kicks in on his 66th birthday. On this occasion the client felt that transferring would be perfect for him and as long as he is sensible and follows advice then I certainly agree. This then bought me on to the subject of his mortgage. He could take the tax free cash now and repay the outstanding balance or he could consider remortgaging to a 5 year fixed rate mortgage, a current deal available is 1.89%, leave the monies invested and then
review and in all likelihood repay in 5 years’ time. The benefit of this is that, provided the investment growth achieved is in excess of 1.89% net of charges, the amount of tax free cash available would be greater. This does bring me back to where I started because the interest payable for the year is only £2,542 or £211.84 per month. Compare this to what he is currently paying and the saving is over £5,000 a year in interest. Fortunately, we were in a position to save him this money but how many people out there are paying ridiculously high rates of interest to line the pockets of their bank or building society? The lesson here is regularly review your finances and make sure you have an Independent Financial Adviser check that what you have is appropriate for you.

Tettenhall College THE VERY BEST START! Our youngest pupils are often the most inspirational and there is nothing more wonderful for us as a School when we can proudly boast at Prize Giving that our Head Boy started with us when he was just 2 years old in nursery.
Having an experienced and knowledgeable team behind our children who know where to take them next in their learning is paramount. Our Nursery and Pre-School pupils are very much part of our school family and start developing relationships with their future teachers and support staff from the age of two. They see their siblings around the school and watch them in school productions as well as taking part in many of their activities – our mini Olympics last summer was open to all from Nursery to Year 2 and supported by our older pupils! They see the excellent role models in our Preparatory and Senior School pupils as well as having the opportunity to interact with them and be part of a larger community that is our Tettenhall College family. They experience a range of extra-curricular activities from sports to music and drama all within hours that suit the needs of our parents; many of whom require care beyond normal school hours. They also have access to first class facilities including a stunning environmental setting; muddy puddle walks and teddy bear picnics are the first steps to our extended curriculum, learning beyond the classroom.
As teachers we have watched many of our pupils grow and flourish; from those very first steps accompanying not only them, but also their family, in their educational journey from curious infant to mature, confident young adult. It is a privilege for us as educational professionals to be involved from the very start. When children are young, they are learning sponges, eager to explore and absorb as much as they possibly can. Every new experience, every word they learn, every behaviour they adopt, is an investment in their future and their well-being. You can never have a greater impression on a person than when they are in their early childhood. To join a nursery that is part of an educational future in which you are confident ensures the very best start for your child. Many schools boast a family atmosphere, yet those with nurseries and pre-schools as part of their early years’ education will seriously be investing in this ethos. Unlike nurseries that are independent of the educational setting, our Nursery staff at Tettenhall College have the benefit and support of fully qualified teachers and subject specialists to guide our youngest pupils’ learning. Like the rest of our School, small class sizes and individual learning set us apart. Recognising and fulfilling potential is important to us and even with our youngest pupils as soon as they are ready, qualified teachers and subject specialists are able to guide learning and spot talents early on. 6
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2018
For our parents it is knowing that their child is starting their education early – and by this we mean not just phonics and numbers but also social skills. Early years education is so much more than playing. While the basic educational benefits of such as literacy and numeracy are tangible, the advances children achieve towards becoming well-rounded individuals are truly invaluable. Our approach is holistic and our pupils are “getting ahead” but not in a pushy way. Academic achievements are always encouraged but they are not the only expectation of pupils. We value politeness, team skills, sharing and caring for each other, accepting the individual and learning to grow together. They are developing key social skills and confidence that are key to their future development whilst learning within a secure and happy environment with teachers that are also investing in their future development and success as pupils at the School. It is truly the very best start in life. Yet to share this educational voyage with our parents and watch our pupils grow, the privilege is all ours.

The Sad lost of Local Historian
DAVID BATTERSBY The death has been announced of the well known local historian and author David Battersby, David passed away suddenly on Wednesday 31st January 2018 from a heart attack aged 84. David’s passion was the history of Cannock chase and he has written and contributed too many books about the area. These included The Story of Cannock ‘Town Centre Through The Ages’ first published 2004. David was a founder member of the Bridgtown and District Local History Society and he was known for his entertaining illustrated talks and lectures on ‘Cannock Old and New’. David kept any extensive archive of documents and photographs on Cannock Chase and these were often used by people who were undertaking historic research on local and social history. David was also a keen Beekeeper and was past chairman of the South Staffordshire Beekeepers Association. He was only to aware of the 12

Exploring Cannock Chase BY ROBERT VAN DER DOES
Cannock Chase is a mixture of natural deciduous woodland, coniferous plantations and open heathland set amid the remnants of Staffordshire’s coal mining past. It is largely confined within Cannock Chase Local Government District, which comprises the towns of Cannock, Hednesford and Rugeley. Main roads crossing over include the A460 and the A513. The Chase was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1958 and is the smallest area to be recognised as such in mainland Britain, covering a distance of 26 square miles. It means it is protected by law and carefully managed by the Forestry Commission to maintain its special character.
From Marquis Drive begin a number of colour-coded walks across the Chase, with each colour indicating a different duration and/or difficulty level. Another popular destination point to start a woodland walk from is Birches Valley Forest Centre, which is located on Lady Hill. The Route to Health walk is ideal for a gentle stroll, while longer walks are outlined alongside the picturesque Fairoak and Sherbrook valleys. Birches Valley is also an ideal starting point for adventure-seekers. Aside from an adventure play area, there’s now the recently opened Go Ape attraction. This high ropes course is open between February and November and offers 3 hours of treetop excitement. This part of the Chase also affords the premier mountain biking destination in the West Midlands, with the Follow the Dog and Monkey trails particularly well renowned.
Orienteering, fishing and horse riding are other popular recreational activities at Cannock Chase. From a starting location at Seven Springs car park, in the Rugeley area, walkers can undertake an easy, but lengthy, trek across the Staffordshire Way and up to the fringes of the Chase and the Shugborough Estate, which contains the most significant country house in Staffordshire, Shugborough Hall, a National Trust site. As well as forest and heathland, Cannock Chase encompasses areas of designed parkland, sand and gravel quarrying and mixed agriculture. The Cannock Chase AONB Management Plan has been put together by like-minded local people to help conserve and enhance the area in the face of amounting recreational and economical pressures.
Over 1.5 million people visit Cannock Chase each year. Considering its relatively small size the Chase is home to a wide diversity of flora and fauna, including an 800-strong herd of wild fallow deer. The deer enjoy roaming the still vast expanse of land the Chase offers, but are shy, secretive creatures and seldom spotted by casual visitors. They most likely descend from the original herd introduced for hunting during Norman times. Cannock Chase boasts the largest surviving area of lowland heathland in the Midlands. This seriously threatened wildlife habitat supports scarcely seen birds such as hobbies, stonechats and nightjars in the area around Sherbrook Valley. The more expansive pine forest and woodland habitat nests bird species such as turtle doves, lesser spotted woodpeckers and redpolls, as well as birds of prey like sparrowhawks and long-eared owls. For birdwatchers the feeding station at Marquis Drive is a must. It attracts bullfinches, yellowhammers and, in winter, large gatherings of bramblings and crossbills. 16
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2018
Cannock Chase has always been a working environment. It has a mining and military history that dates back several hundred years. The Museum of Cannock Chase is situated on the edge of Hednesford Hills and highlights the rich industrial heritage of the area. The importance of coal to the local region can be seen at the Coal Mining Gallery and an exciting interactive experience can be enjoyed in the History of Toys and Coal Face Gallery. Happy 6th Anniversary Staffordshire Outlook
Since I started advertising La Minky & Salon La Mink in the Staffordshire Outlook in July 2013, the response and new customers that the magazine has brought me has been tremendous.
Here at the Staffordshire Outlook, we are celebrating our 6th anniversary this month! We are so grateful to all of the clients who continue to advertise their business and to the readers for contributing to the Staffordshire Outlook Magazine’s popularity and success.
I have used other publications in the past, however the Staffordshire Outlook is the one that has delivered the best results by far! I will continue to advertise in this great magazine for the foreseeable future, as every month Sharon comes to see me and we change the offers to keep my advertising fresh and up to date with the seasons.
Sales Director Sharon Caldwell says “I cannot believe that we are now celebrating our sixth anniversary, time certainly flies when you’re having fun! I didn’t think when I started the magazine that it would be as successful as it has been to date. I have such great feedback from the readers of the magazine, and they comment on how local the content of the magazine is.This was my main objective when I started the Staffordshire Outlook. I go and see all of my clients every month and I have made many new friends on the way. The comments I receive every month off my clients is fantastic, and it makes me so proud that the Staffordshire Outlook is bringing new customers and increasing their profit. I want to thank you, the readers of the magazine and hopefully you will continue to support the Staffordshire Outlook.” Our aim at Staffordshire Outlook is to help local business’s achieve their full potential by reaching their local target market at a cost effective rate. Local people are using local businesses more now than ever. Please get in contact if you want your business to be featured in a local, quality magazine. Please see below a few client testimonials who are advertising their business in the magazine with great results:
The Kings Repose would like to say a big thank you to Sharon at the Staffordshire Outlook magazine for her efforts in helping us put our adverts together. We have advertised in the magazine since day one and have found the response excellent. We will definitely continue to advertise our restaurant in the magazine and would recommend using the magazine to advertise your business! Congratulations to all at the Staffordshire Outlook on your 6th anniversary and we hope you are around for many more years!
Monseur & Misbah at The Kings Repose
If you are looking for a magazine that gets results, I would recommend the Staffordshire Outlook, it has worked for us and I am sure it can work for you! Happy 6th Birthday Staffordshire Outlook and I hope you have many more.
June Laing – La Minky &Salon La Mink Here at Ralvern Ltd have been extremely pleased and very gratefully surprised at the localised advertising done in the Staffordshire Outlook Magazine. We have been advertising since 2013, and we go into every edition. Every time our advert is out in the areas that the Magazine covers we have numerous enquiries, with sales that out perform any other type of advertising that we do, our partnership that we have built up within the publication is simply fantastic. Our customers always when coming to us from the Staffordshire Outlook magazine say where they found us from, each time the publication comes out from print and goes to door, I can tell the increased footfall and telephone conversations multiply. Thanks to everything that you do, and congratulations on the magazine’s sixth anniversary.
Simon Edwards – Ralvern Ltd The Chase CACI Clinic is a fledgling business and as such advertising as vitally important. We were approached by many companies who offered differing advertising services. We tried several of them (most with limited success). We were then recommended to contact Sharon at Staffordshire Outlook by one of her many satisfied customers and since then have not looked back. The quality of the magazine is superb, it is distributed over a wide area and, as it is bi -monthly, people do not get fed up with it. The responses we have had via the magazine have far outstripped any other form of advertising and that is why we are sticking with it. Sharon is a delight to work with and so helpful. If we had only met Sharon first we would have saved a lot of money on ineffectual advertising.

Competition Tickets for Staffordshire County Show! Win a family ticket! Tickets for one of the most important event in the agricultural calendar are now on sale. People across Staffordshire and beyond will be able to pick up tickets for the Staffordshire County Show from April 1st. Richard Williams, Chief Executive of the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society, said it is an exciting time. He said: “We know a lot of people are planning on coming along as there has been excitement building on our Facebook page and enquiries to our office. Many people look forward to the first opportunity to get their tickets and it is fast approaching. April 1st tickets go on sale on the show website and from the Showground office - then from May 1 local shops and all the usual outlets will be stocked ready to sell them to anyone interested. This is no April fool’s joke, though there is a chance of a few white rabbits showing up at the show itself!” Attractions at the show on May 30 and 31 include an exciting line up in the main ring of the The JCB Dancing Diggers as well as dancing dogs when the Rockwood Dog display team from Caerphilly, Wales. The Dancing Diggers were born when the founder of JCB, the late Joseph Bamford, wanted to demonstrate the strength of the new breed of hydraulic machines to sceptical buyers. They have since curtsied for the Queen, pirouetted for TV and thrilled thousands all over the world with their spectacular show. The dog team, which has featured on national television shows such as That’s Life, The Wogan Show, TFI Friday, Rolf’s amazing animals and Dogs With Jobs, will put the dogs through their paces with a relay race to entertain the crowds. With some of the dogs being from rescued backgrounds, they aim to wow the crowds performing spectacular stunts like parallel bar walking and fire retrieving. There is also a vast array of animals for children to pet in the Country Pursuits Area including a return of the popular giant tortoises, which appeared for the first time last year.
This month we have teamed up with Staffordshire County Show for one lucky winner to win a Family Ticket for two adults and three children. The ticket, for one day of the two day, half term, show on May 30 and 31, will give you access to see many exciting attractions that both adults and children are sure to enjoy. One of them is the world famous JCB Dancing Diggers, which will put on a nail biting show in the main ring. To be in with a chance of winning this fabulous prize, simply answer the following question:
What is the name of the founder of the company JCB?
Email your answer to info@staffordshireoutlook.co.uk or on a postcard to 30 Swinburne Close, Sutton Heights, Telford, Shropshire TF7 4PZ. Please ensure that you send your name, address and telephone number. Entries to be received by the 30th April 2018
Terms and Conditions
Prize cannot be exchanged and no cash alternative prize available. Winner will be notified by telephone. Family ticket will be posted to winner.
Produce, trade stands and agriculture make up the backbone of the popular event at the showground in Weston Road.
He said: “We have some great new aspects at the 2018 show and it’s shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. I am very excited for the show already and final preparations are now being made as we are in to April.
Last year around 65,000 people attended to watch competitions judging cows to crumpets, pigs to potatoes and flowers to farriary - there’s certainly something that all members of the family can get involved with.
The real key is that there are so many different shows within this show and there really is something for all the family.”
Richard added that he is thrilled about the line-up for this year’s show.

SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME President Val Jones welcomed members to the final speaker meeting of her year in office. The speaker for the occasion was Graham White talking about the amazing transformation of his large garden plot into a stunning horticultural vision, which won him and his wife Judy a highly recommended place in the National Garden Scheme (NGS). With no previous experience he overcame the formidable obstacles of a steep embankment leading down into a swamp and small stream. He achieved this this with wife Judy – along with the muscle power of three teenage sons! They moved into their home in Uttoxeter 26 years ago and spent the first 17 years creating the garden which is now open to the public each year through the NGS. It was a fascinating and entertaining story which everyone thoroughly enjoyed – and the end result shown with some super photos , is simply magnificent! Seeing the garden now it’s hard to believe the plot of ground they started with all of those years ago. Graham used many ploys to enlist the help of their sons, including convincing them that laying the turf was for a putting green [they were keen golfers] not a lawn! In reference to this, Graham and Judy put a small golf flag on the lawn when their sons and their families visit. During his talk Graham explained that all proceeds from entry to the garden go to NGS – and all of their 32

money is donated each year to ‘caring’ charities – Hospice UK; MS Society; Macmillan Cancer Support being just three of them. In the 9 years they have opened as post of the scheme Graham and Judy have had 6,425 visitors to Woodleighton Grove. Private visits can be booked by phoning them on 01889 563930. Soroptimist Sue Cartlidge gave the vote of thanks, saying that she would love similar results in her own newly acquired garden!! She presented Graham with a cheque for the National Garden Scheme charities. President Val has ended each meeting with a quote. At this meeting she quoted Confucius, the Chinese philosopher When it is obvious the Goals cannot be reached, do not adjust the goals, change the action steps” For more information about SI Cannock please visit their website www.sigbi.org/ cannock-and-district or their Facebook page www.facebook. com/SICannock; Photo: Val Jones, President SI Cannock & District with Graham White, Woodleighton Grove Garden

Competition One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see Heaven 17 and Lightning Seeds at Uttoxeter Racecourse on Saturday 19th May. VMS Live and Uttoxeter Racecourse are excited to announce an evening with Heaven 17 and Lightning Seeds, after the races for one night only taking place on Saturday 19th May! Heaven 17, please remember, were not even intended to be a group. In the beginning was the British Electric Foundation, or B.E.F., for short. Born out of the collapse of the original Human League, and the brainchild of Martyn Ware, that band’s leader, B.E.F. was less a record label, as a portfolio of future musical projects of which Heaven 17 would be just one. Ian Craig Marsh, co-founder of the Human League, would join Ware along with Glenn Gregory as lead vocalist the man who would have been the original Human League singer had he not been unavailable.
Following the success of their sold-out November & December – 2017 UK Tour, tickets will go quick! Lighting Seeds Ian Broudie originally emerged from the post punk Liverpool music scene of the late seventies, playing in the band “ Big in Japan” alongside fellow band members Bill Drummond (KLF), Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes To Hollywood), Budgie (The Slits/Souxie And The Banshees) and Jayne Casey (Pink Military). In 1996, Euro ‘96 was set to be the first major football tournament to be held in England since they had won the World Cup on home soil in 1966. The English Football Association asked Ian if he would write a song for the England team. He had the idea of collaborating with two comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, the hosts of popular TV show Fantasy Football. They then wrote and recorded the song 3 Lions ’96, which became a number one single on two occasions, selling over a million copies in the UK. Another version of the song, 3 Lions ’98, also topped the Chart two years later. Tickets for the Heaven 17 & Lightning Seeds – Uttoxeter Racecourse show taking place on Saturday 19th May also include a day at the races and are available from: Saturday 19th May 2018 UTTOXETER RACECOURSE Box Office No: 0844 249 1000 Website – http://www.vmstickets.co.uk/ Gates Open – 3.00pm / Last race – 8.35pm On Stage – 9.00pm (approx.) Owned and Operated by Jon Matthews WHEN DID YOU LAST HAVE YOUR GUTTERS CLEARED OUT?
Gutter health is an often-overlooked part of your home maintenance plan, but gutters perform an important function in protecting your home.
your guttering. The moss breaks down and provides a great medium for weeds & grass to germinate which will prevent water running freely to the drains.” GutterPRO are able to clear gutters from the ground using a powerful vacuum system and super-light carbon poles. Because of the length of the poles, GutterPRO can reach over your conservatory where it would be impossible to place a ladder safely. This means that not only is there less risk of falling off a ladder, there is less risk to your property too. Jon Matthews says “For your full peace of mind, we use a CCTV system that enables us to show you before and after photographs of the work we have completed for you. If your gutters are clear, then there is no call out charge. All our jobs are booked in for a timed appointment, so you know we are coming.”
AXA, the world leading insurance company, suggest that gutters require at least an internal inspection each year,
Recently, GutterPRO introduced a gutter washing service which removed black marks and dirt from uPVC gutters and fascia boards, giving homes a fresh new look and much improved kerbside appeal.
and clearing out if they are clogged up. Blocked gutters can lead to brick damage, wood rot and even damp on internal walls of your home.
Local GutterPRO expert Jon Matthews says “Contrary to popular belief, it’s moss not leaves are the major cause of gutter blockages. So even if your property doesn’t have trees in the immediate area there may still be a problem building up. Moss does a great job of falling from your roof when it rains and then swelling up in
Jon Matthews continues “We are seeing people getting a clear and clean before putting their properties on the market. People don’t want to see grass growing from gutters, or dirty gutters on estate agent’s photos.” GutterPRO West Midlands & South Staffs has had many five-star Facebook reviews. My Best Friend Stafford is owned and operated by Louise Huckfield. I’m lucky to have been around dogs all my life. Growing up our family had dogs and as soon as I set up my own home the first thing I did was get my own. This has continued throughout my life, I currently live with my two Dalmatians, Millie, Lulu and Alfie the Bedlington Terrier. Dogs have always been my passion, so it made perfect sense to start up my own business with My Best Friend. I’m finally able to dedicate my days to making sure we all have happy, tired and stress free pooches, which is a dream come true. My services include Day care, Home boarding, Dog Walking, Pet Sitting and Puppy Visits. Me, (Millie, Lulu and Alfie) look forward to seeing you all soon.

Competition WHAT’S NEW AT WEST MIDLAND SAFARI PARK IN 2018? Staff at West Midland Safari Park are preparing for their best year yet, as the attraction prepares to celebrate its 45th year. The busy schedule for 2018 includes celebrating the birthdays of animals born last year, an education partnership with art exhibit Worcester Stands Tall and the opening of their brand new prehistoric exhibit - Ice Age which is due to arrive in Spring. Continuing the journey from The Land of the Living Dinosaurs exhibit, the £1 million project will feature a huge volcano, ice cave and ferocious, life-sized animals, taking guests on an interactive exploration through time. Adventurers will be able to walk amongst a gigantic woolly mammoth, a fierce smilodon and an enormous paracatherium, to name just a few. As well as the brand new exhibit, the Park is also the official Education Partner for Worcester Stands Tall - a public art exhibition of decorated giraffe sculptures due to be dotted around the streets of Worcester during the summer of 2018. The event, facilitated by Wild In Art and brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice, will enable local schools and renowned artists to design and decorate the sculptures. Larger sculptures will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the hospice.
Celebrating their first birthdays, guests can see how much the gorgeous babies of 2017 have grown during the past year. Fennessy the Rothschild’s giraffe is now a staggering 10-feet-tall and is showing no signs of slowing down! Also on the Safari Drive-through is beautiful baby Fahari, the second southern white rhino born at the Park within two years. Full of confidence and charisma, the healthy youngsters have been a great success for the longevity of both species, whose numbers are dramatically dropping in the wild. West Midland Safari Park is open daily for its summer season from 10 February 2018. Standard admission charge is £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children aged 3-15 and £22.00 for concessions. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra.
Further information and tickets are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. You can find out more on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ WestMidSafari.

After After After After
They’re not all surrendered due to medical or behavioural problems, a change in circumstance is just as likely and also just as heart-breaking.
French Bulldog Saviours (FBS) started in 2013 when Lindsey Scanlon, the founder, saw a very badly abused and neglected French Bulldog for sale on one of the many websites that allow the sale of dogs with no real regard for their welfare. Lindsey paid for the dog (Dolly) herself so that she could take her far away from a life of hell and stop anything else untoward happening to her. It was Lindsey’s mission to love her, nurture her and mend her. She set up a Facebook page to ask the public to help raise funds for Dolly’s huge medical needs and was absolutely blown away by their generosity. Fuelled with a passion to help other French Bulldogs in need, Lindsey made the decision to set up a charity, Dolly’s Angels. With the help of the public she raised funds to rescue other Frenchie’s from a life of misery and neglect. In 2015 French Bulldog Saviours as it was then known was awarded charity status. This has elevated our ability to inform, educate and spread the word about the current crisis and dangers faced by this gorgeous breed. FBS is run entirely by volunteers who work tirelessly to make an impact on the lives of French Bulldogs in need, but also to educate people so that they can make informed decisions about who and where they’re buying their dogs from. As a rescue charity we never judge people for surrendering their dogs. 52
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2018
Once a dog is surrendered to us it’s taken immediately into foster care. Frenchie’s don’t deal well with being on their own so providing kennels simply isn’t as option. Instead, we have a network of incredibly generous foster carers who accept the dog into their home to assess its needs. This can be anything from two weeks onwards. Once we know exactly what the dog needs we can work on rehabilitating or repairing it before we put it up for adoption to find its forever home. It takes a fantastic network of volunteers to make this happen. Once foster homes and potential forever homes come forward a home check has to be carried out to ensure that the home and garden provide a safe environment and to make sure the families are clued up about the breed and what to expect from them. We often rely on people to transport dogs around the country and we also rely heavily on donations and fundraising. We’re incredibly lucky to be supported by national brands such as Pets at Home and Zooplus, people can raise money for us each time they shop online via EasyFundraisisng or you can even make a difference by saving your stamps and unwanted items such as ink cartridges and sweet wrappers! Each week we host an auction on our Facebook page which is where the main source of our income comes from. If it wasn’t for our supporters and kind-hearted brands donating items and also buying them we wouldn’t be able to do what we do today. Repairing and rehabilitating French Bulldogs isn’t cheap so our vet bills are astronomical. But no cost is too big for our beloved Frenchie’s. We will always do whatever we can to give the dogs a better chance at life. We’re always looking for new supporters and volunteers as well as new ideas so we’d love for you to become more involved. 2018 will see us touring events across the UK so check out our website for more info and pop along to say hi

We offer a complete jewellery restoration service for that item that has just been loved too much and is tired. For examples see before and after photographs on our gallery at www. djmbespokejewellery.co.uk I currently design and make jewellery for our retail jewellers Emporium 13, based in Sedgley, West Midlands. The shop has been established over 10 years and offers a diverse selection of jewellery not usually found on the high street.
We are a small independent jewellery design centre based in Cannock Staffordshire.
Contact me personally on 01543 328885 or email sales@djmbespokejewellery.co.uk for all your jewellery based questions I would be delighted to speak further with regards to any of our services.
I have worked in the Jewellery business for 18 years specialising in bespoke handmade designs providing that very personal approach from the outset by way of private consultation. This personal yet surprisingly affordable service enables the client’s involvement from concept to completion. I am proud to guarantee that every commission I make is a handmade, one off, unique design. We liaise with the client enabling them to translate their designs and thoughts and I can provide initial concept drawings where required. Over the years I have found that sentiment can often outweigh the intrinsic value of the specific piece of jewellery. In respect of this I regularly use clients old, or perhaps inherited unwearable pieces and remodel using original stones and precious metal in order to carry that sentiment through to something current, wearable and unique. A popular area with regards this service is the refashioning of inherited loved ones wedding bands and/or engagement ring which, I have found, regularly sit at the bottom of a drawer gathering dust. Clients are often surprised at the designs created from yesteryear pieces and are excited to discover that they could wear loved ones jewellery as a new exclusive designs. Clients are frequently surprised at the affordability of the service. In furtherance of this service it is intended that in the near future clients can actually become involved in the making of their piece. We provide a free inclusive care plan which includes three revisits to us over a period of 5 years during which your item will be checked for the setting of stones and re rhodium plated/polished where required. As this service extends to five years from the date of purchase it enables the item to remain looking ‘as new’.

Staffordshire Outlook RAISING MONEY FOR FRENCH BULLDOG SAVIOURS On Sunday 3rd June 2018 Sharon Caldwell (Staffordshire Outlook Director) and Sister Michelle Caldwell will be taking part in their first triathlon, for their chosen charity French Bulldog Saviours (FBS). For the past few years Sharon & Michelle have pushed their limits and completed a full marathon and Tough Mudder, and for both events they have raised money for charities. This year’s event is their biggest challenge to date. The UK Ultimate 1/4 Triathlon which consists of a 0.6 mile swim, 28 mile cycle and 6.5 mile run. Sharon & Michelle have their own Frenchie Frankie, who is very spoilt and very cute! They have chosen this charity as they are both so passionate about FBS and everything they do to rescue French Bulldogs.
Sharon says “We are both hoping to raise as much money as we can for FBS, as the charity is absolutely brilliant. Some of the rescues they have been involved in have been heartbreaking, but without such a great charity I dread to think what would have happened to the poor Frenchie’s. This is our biggest challenge and we are training hard now, which is tough, as we have never been on a road bike so it is proving a lot harder than we thought. We just keep reminding ourselves that this will be a massive achievement and we will be raising money for such a good cause.”
If you would like to sponsor Sharon & Michelle then please visit their just giving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ Michellesharoncaldwell
SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT SPECIAL NEEDS ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND Cannock Soroptimists held a very successful coffee morning to raise funds for Cannock’s Special Needs Adventure Playgound – SNAP – located on the Pye Green Road. It is the only facility of its kind in the area, families come from all over the County and beyond to use it. Soroptimists have had an involvement with SNAP over many years and they were delighted to host this event for them. Nearly 50 people went along to the coffee morning held at the home of Soroptimist Trish Mellor; members and their friends and families were incredibly generous by donating cakes, raffle prizes and items for the bring and buy stall. As well as enjoying a morning of friendship everyone who went along was equally generous with the raffle and the bring and buy. A fabulous sum of £510.00 was raised!! Bob Heighway, Chair of SNAP, came along to meet everyone and to talk a little of the history of the way we provide for children with special needs and of some of the wonderful facilities SNAP offers to children and their families. Although we are now able to offer so 54

NEW YEAR, NEW LEGS, NEW YOU
GREAT LOOKING LEGS FOR THE SUMMER If you have varicose veins and want great looking legs for the summer, now is the time to act. Having these assessed and treated has never been easier. The Vein Clinic, led by Mr Simon Hobbs, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, treats the vast majority of varicose veins as walk-in, walk-out procedures, under local anaesthetic, with greatly enhanced recovery compared to traditional surgical treatments. The clinic, situated in the Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital, uses the latest in medical technology to diagnose and treat the veins that are the underlying cause of unsightly and symptomatic varicose veins. Mr Hobbs is the only surgeon in the West Midlands currently offering the VenaSeal Closure system, alongside other popular treatments such as Radiofrequency ablation, enabling people to have their veins treated with minimal discomfort.
VenaSeal uses a medical grade super glue to seal off the damaged veins and as it involves fewer injections in the leg this treatment means that you can be quickly back to full activity enjoying the benefits of healthy feeling and great looking legs.
If veins are left untreated, they can lead to bleeding, eczema, phlebitis, brown skin discolouration and potentially leg ulcers, which take a long time to heal. During a consultation, an ultra sound scan will be performed to detect the source of the problem and from the size and position, indicate the required treatment.
Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves in the veins which causes blood to pool and result in painful and unsightly bulges at the skin’s surface. Symptoms include aching, itching, swelling, throbbing and restless legs at night, with both men and women being affected equally.
Recognised by all major Medical Insurers. For self-paying patients, the consultation fee is £150 and an ultrasound of both legs is £99. For further information visit www.simonhobbsveins.co.uk

“Ash, I came to see you after I had Rhinoplasty 10 years ago, abroad. I was very unhappy with the results. But when you performed the nonsurgical Rhinoplasty on my nose, it was an amazing result which has changed my nose on the outside to my desired shape, and gave me all the confidence and reassurance from the inside as well! I thank you so much for the revolutionary treatment.” Chris

BMW X3
BY ROB TAYLOR
THE BEST ONE YET
This class of car is certainly not short on talent – nor is it lacking in popularity. There are very strong premium contenders: the Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, Mercedes GLC, Porsche Macan and new Range Rover Velar all present compelling arguments for SUV buyers. Splitting them is harder than splitting the atom in a school science lab, so I won’t bother. Instead I’m going to tell you about the BMW X3 and why the latest one is the best one yet – and perhaps better than all its rivals. After a slightly inauspicious start back in 2003 (back then the SUV formula was in its infancy) the X3 has gathered momentum through its subsequent evolutions and garnered much acclaim. Perfecting a formula takes a long time in car development but now the German brand has it completely sussed, so much so that it has three more new SUVs in the pipeline, featuring more X’s than you can shake a stick at, no doubt. Despite now standing at roughly the same size as the original X5, the new X3 has matured into a handsome beast – even with 62
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2018
its gurning, oversized grille. It definitely looks and feels big, but it’s a size that sells well, despite the fact that most of these vehicles seem to be used exclusively in our overcrowded towns and cities. Out goes the entry-level two-wheel drive variant, to leave every new X3 with all-wheel drive, which is handy in snow but less so at the pumps. There is now a choice of two petrol and two turbo-diesel engines, including a new 360 bhp 3 litre: the first ever M Performance X3. And while this might grab all the attention it’s the two turbodiesels – in 2 and 3 litre forms – that will account for most of the sales. I have here the relatively modest X3 X-drive 187 bhp 2.0d X-line and first impressions are very positive. The X3’s chassis is just about as fun through the corners as physics will allow; it’s supple over bumps and offers up supreme comfort. Admittedly this model has fitted optional adaptive dampers (which add between £460 to £750, depending on model) so it’s hard to know just how much is addedon refinement and how much is standard: however, anyone who is keen to spend around £40,000 on an SUV probably won’t quibble about the added cost.
The engine and gearbox is a joy to use, delivering decent fuel economy at around 40 mpg. But don’t take my word for it, Amazon’s Echo Alexa voice control allows drivers to check fuel level, change heating and ventilation, and lock the vehicle, all via a smartphone. Look out for a few semi-autonomous driving functions too: active cruise control can brake and accelerate in lowspeed, stop-go traffic, steering lane control assist and auto city braking is good to have as well. Get inside the X3 and you’re whisked away into a world of sybaritic luxury. Materials and build quality are first class. Seats are comfortable and supportive, the cabin is spacious and well protected against road noise, plus there’s a big boot. The optional head-up display is clear and useable; and the optional gesture control is great for impressing your mates. I also enjoyed the small spotlights behind the front wheels that illuminate entry and exit at night. It’s the little things that make the X3 stand out from the herd. For me, it’s still at the top of the SUV tree.
Jaguar F-Pace
BY ROB TAYLOR
FRESH OUT OF THE BOX
Jaguar has managed to nail the SUV formula on its very first attempt. This is no mean feat as only rarely can a manufacturer drop a new model without it falling short in some way – big or small. As with smartphones, there’s always an update or two before we see a bona fide contender, ready to take on the established order. And because car development takes place so painfully slowly in this super-quick-fast digital age we’re usually left waiting for years before we can buy the product we’ve wanted all along. Yet here’s Jaguar’s F-Pace, fresh out of the box, and already a big hit. To put it into perspective, BMW has been tinkering with its X5 for nearly 20 years and it’s still not as good. Even Volvo’s XC90 needs to watch out. I’m sure sister company Land Rover has helped Jaguar a lot, after all this rough and tumble division has been giving us high-riding 4x4s for millennia. However, they definitely haven’t helped out with the styling of the F-Pace or with the interior. The Jaguar is hugely good looking, boasts a classy cabin, and goes a
long way to prove that you don’t need to buy BMW to get driving excitement from your familyfriendly crossover. Unsurprisingly the F-Pace is rearwheel-drive for most of the time (unless you want a four-wheeldrive set-up, and even then it’ll operate only on a part-time basis) and that explains the fun factor. It won’t win any drag races, nor will it take corners like a Premiership footballer but it will impress with how – even with the most limpwristed lump beneath the bonnet – it moves its 1.7 tonnes of bulk around towns and cities. You can get into one of these for just over £35,000; then go all the way north of £70,000. Engines range from this, the most sensible – and popular – choice for UK roads, the 237 bhp 2.0 litre diesel, up to a fruity supercharged 375 bhp V6 petrol. Pulling power is ample across all options although diesel still does it best in most cases due to some hefty torque numbers and this, when allied to the real-world prospect of getting over 35 mpg at the pumps, should prove persuasive despite growing anti-diesel sentiment.
The interior is largely faultless. Classy materials and easy-tooperate buttons are mated with a bright, airy cabin that can comfortably carry five adults. The cutting edge InControl Pro infotainment system can be optioned with a large 10” touchscreen which functions much like an iPad. It’s intuitive and pretty responsive, and with its ‘dual-view screen’, driver and passenger can each watch different functions at the same time (sat-nav for one, TV for the other). Big on boot space as well – bigger even than Jaguar’s XF Sportbrake – the F-Pace is an enormously practical and stylish modern day tool. It looks vaguely hostile from the front with its big grille; its coupe-like side profile and F-Typeinspired tail-lights set it apart from Germanic ubiquity. With seats this comfy, and a Cathedral-quiet ride, you’ll almost never feel fatigued at the wheel, nor ever will you ever wonder if you made the right decision by buying British. Overall it’s a winner – and first time out of the gate too. Already its rivals are struggling to keep pace.

ONE STOP BREAST CARE CLINIC A same day self referral breast clinic is now available privately twice a week at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital. People who notice changes can be referred to the One Stop Breast Clinic to have the results from both a specialist consultation and imaging on the same day. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK, with 31% of all cancers diagnosed in women being breast cancer. Survival from the disease has been improving over time as a result of both early detection and improvements in treatment. Now approximately three out of four women diagnosed with breast cancer are alive 10 years later. However about 12,000 women in the UK still die from breast cancer every year. A ‘One-Stop’ integrated breast clinic is now available at the Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital. Private patients can be seen for a specialist consultation, which includes a mammogram and an ultrasound for a package price of £495. Usually the results of the imaging and consultation are all explained at one visit. Using the latest Full Field Digital Mammography unit, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital offers the One Stop Breast Clinic twice a week with consultant oncoplastic

surgeons Mrs Pilar Matey and, recently joined, Mr Tapan Sircar and consultant radiologist Dr Marie Metelko. Other consultant colleagues include Mr Brian Isgar and Mr Seni Mylvaganam and specialist nursing, haematology and imaging staff. All tests and assessments are carried out in accordance with the latest National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. The results are discussed with the patient and time is taken for any queries to be explained. Radiology Manager, Lucy Willcox, explains,”We’re really excited to launch this new One-Stop breast clinic. Patients who are concerned about changes in their breasts can see a specialist breast consultant, have the appropriate imaging done and in most cases receive their results on the same day.” Breast cancer starts when the cells in the breast begin to grow in an uncontrolled way and build
up to form a lump, also known as a tumour. As the cancer grows, cells can spread to other parts of the body and this can then become life-threatening. The one stop service at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital follows the most recent guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). If you have any changes to your breast, you should make an appointment to see your GP straight away. You may not have cancer but if you do, being diagnosed and treated at an early stage may mean that you are more likely to survive breast cancer. Being breast aware is about being conscious of how your breasts normally look and feel at different times of the month and checking them regularly. For more information or to make an appointment with the One Stop Breast Clinic direct, please ring: 01902 793269 In 2018, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital celebrates 40 years in Tettenhall. Over the same period, since 1978, Cancer Research UK has helped double cancer survival rates.
