Married Couple’s
Tax allowanCe
Are you eligible and if so are you claiming it? I am staggered at the number of people I see who have no idea that there is a married couple’s allowance, let alone claim it. The allowance was introduced on 6th April 2015 and it allows a couple to benefit if one is earning less than £11,500 and the other is earning between £11,500 and £45,000 in tax year 2017/18. The allowance means that the lower earner can transfer £1,150 (2017/18) to their husband, wife or civil partner which will save £230 in tax for this year. 4
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST 2017
You can also backdate any claim to 6th April 2015, so for anyone who is eligible it means you could be entitled to a combined tax rebate of £662. There are in the UK 4.2 million people eligible for this allowance however to date only 2.4 million couples have claimed it. How do you go about claiming? It is a simple process for anyone who is tech savvy, simply log on to https://www.gov.uk/applymarriage-allowance and at the bottom of the page hit “start now” For those of you who do not have access to a computer simply phone HMRC on 0300
200 3300, making sure that you have both of your national insurance numbers together and acceptable forms of ID. Please note that it must be the lower earner who contacts HMRC as it is they who are transferring part of their allowance. Pension contributions for higher rate tax payers close to retirement For anyone approaching retirement, making use of the tax relief available to you when investing in a pension is so beneficial that it just doesn’t make sense not to benefit. Take someone earning £55,000 per annum. The tax payable on
the top £10,000 of earnings is £4,000, meaning that after tax you would receive £6,000. Now, most people approaching retirement tend to have savings and can forgo what is in effect £500 per month from their net salary, and by doing this when you retire and become a basic rate taxpayer (as most people do), after tax you would receive £8,500 giving you a profit of £2,500 on what is in essence a £6,000 investment. I recently had someone contact me for advice regarding his potential retirement. He is 58 years old and wants to ideally retire when he is 60 however, because of the mortgage they have, he may be 65 before he is in a position to finish work and live comfortably. Whilst discussing his financial circumstances, in order to clear their mortgage he is overpaying by £600 per month which, over 2 years, would give him capital repayments of £14,400 or if he continued working until age 65 the overpayments would total £50,400. By redirecting these overpayments into his pension the benefits are considerable as, should he retire at age 60, instead of £14,400 he would have £20,400 and if he continued to work until his 65th birthday the £50,400 would be £71,400, providing he did not withdraw the full amount in one tax year as this would put him in the higher rate tax bracket. With the changes we have seen in pension legislation over the last few years there is, in my opinion, no better place to invest as you have total control of how and when you access your benefits once you reach your 55th birthday plus, in addition, pensions are outside of your estate for inheritance tax. Another happy client For those of you who read my article on a regular basis: in the last edition I told you about Mrs R who is 58 years old and is now retiring after transferring her preserved pension with Jaguar Land Rover. I have now just advised another JLR employee who, like Mrs R, is 58 years old and after 37 years
working for JLR requested figures should he decide to take early retirement within the scheme. His projected pension at age 65 is just in excess of £30,000 p.a. so when he was told if he retired early he would be entitled to £70,000 tax free cash plus a reduced pension of £13,500 p.a. he was to say the least crestfallen. Fortunately, he then contacted us and we approached JLR to request a transfer value which came back at £679,00. After all costs of transferring this give him tax free cash just in excess of £166,000 and a pension fund remaining of £500,000. As it happens, he does not need all his tax free cash so this will be staggered as and when required. The decision has been made that he will retire next March on his 59th birthday - to say he is looking forward to next year is an understatement. If you have a preserved pension and would like to explore your options please feel free to contact us and we can advise you accordingly.

One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see BRASSED OFF on Thursday 24 August at 7:30pm Based on a true story, BRASSED OFF starring Jeffrey Holland as Danny is a funny and life-affirming tale of community spirit and triumph in the face of adversity. For the first time in almost 40 years, Wolverhampton Grand Theatre is producing the production in-house at the venue and this production will be something unique for the people of Wolverhampton and the surrounding areas. It’s 1994; and Danny’s lifelong ambition to lead Grimley Colliery Band to the National Brass Band Competition at the Royal Albert Hall looks like it might finally happen. But as Grimley pit faces closure, the future looks bleak as the town is thrown into conflict. Flugelhorn player Gloria arrives in town bringing with her a renewed sense of hope and a touch of romance, but no-one knows who she’s really playing for...Adapted from the 1996 film starring Ewan McGregor, BRASSED OFF features a full brass band from the local area playing music including: William Tell Overture, Death and Glory, Danny Boy, Land of Hope and Glory and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.

Encaustic Tiles TILES WITH STYLE
When summer hits, our moods brighten, our excitement heightens and we’re more inclined to make changes and transform our homes. And the best way to do this is by introducing both colour and pattern – using encaustic tiles. They have enjoyed a rise in popularity in recent years, but their fundamental qualities remain the same; hardwearing tiles combined with impeccable designs. Encaustic tiles were first made in Europe in the late 19th century. They were used to decorate the floors of palaces in St. Petersburg, Gaudi’s distinctive houses in Barcelona, and grand hallways from Paris to Saigon. Today they are found in countless chic bars, restaurants and designer-homes in London, Paris and New York. Ca’ Pietra’s collection of hand-made decorative tiles are made using the ‘encaustic’ technique with cement where the pattern is inlaid into the body of the tile, so that the design and colour remain, even as the tile wears. These differ from ceramic tiles, where the surface pattern is the product of the finishing glaze printed on the surface.
Pattern is ideal for creating any style, from the modern to the classic – it is the fast track to a decorative element that doesn’t overwhelm. From modern lined form, zig-zags, art deco style and optically challenging tiles to the beautiful Moroccaninspired floral creation; pattern has the tendency to create a statement.
By being more creative and original with our décor, it can help to give a room a sense of individuality and we can reflect our personalities by introducing pattern. There is an abundance of different styles, designs and colours to choose from, so you can really go to town with pattern and bring an interior space alive.

SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR DOG THIS SUMMER Make cool treats. Help your dog chill from the inside out. Frozen treats, such as flavoured ice cubes or Kongs filled with frozen food are a great way to keep dogs cool and entertained. Keep an eye on the humidity, too. When the air is full of moisture, your dog may not be able to pant enough to cool himself off. That can raise his temperature, which can lead to heatstroke. Stay inside, and limit exercise, too.
Our dogs love summer just as much as we do! For many, it’s the best time of year to be out, about, and enjoying all that the summer has to offer. Read on to learn some important summer safety tips for your dogs. Don’t leave your dog in the car. Even if it is a relatively cool 22°c outside, the internal temperature of a car can reach 47°c within one hour. Even with the windows down, a dog can easily overheat if left in these conditions.
Take care of at-risk dogs. Be watchful if you have a snub-nosed pet like a pug or bulldog. Their smaller airways make it harder for them to release heat when they pant. It’s also easy for old and overweight dogs, or those with heart and breathing problems, to get heatstroke. Cooling your dog. Let your dog stand in a cool paddling pool. Aside from panting, dogs cool down through the sweat glands in their paws. Having them stand in a cool pool of water or giving them a quick foot soak can help lower their body temperature. It can also be helpful to put some cold water on your dog’s chest. Cooling dog pads or a cooling coat can also help.
Watch when you walk. Limit when and how much you do when it’s hot and humid. Take walks in the cooler part of the day, in the early morning and evening hours. Carry water too, enough for both of you. Check the pavement. Before you head out for a walk, touch the pavement. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paw pads. Walk on the grass and stay off the tarmac. Offer plenty of water and shade. Don’t leave your pooch alone outside for long. And when he is there, make sure he has shade and lots of fresh, cool water.
And as always, make sure you talk with your vet about any concerns you have about your pets in the summer weather.

Peppermill Interiors A FAMILY-RUN FURNITURE COMPANY WITH OVER TWO DECADES OF EXPERIENCE Peppermill Interiors is a family-run furniture company with over two decades of experience. Originally established as Peppermill Antiques, the company has changed focus in recent years to introduce more modern and contemporary pieces, with a unique emphasis on vintage and industrial inspired items.
Striving to meet demands for changing trends means there’s no shortage of variety at Peppermill Interiors. From luxury French inspired upholstered furniture to traditional kitchen chairs, industrial style copper and zinc top tables to original, one-off vintage finds – this company has everything you could possibly need, all under one roof. And, it isn’t just dining room furniture; you can also find a huge range of classic leather armchairs, Chesterfield sofas, bedroom furniture, sideboards and lighting, as well as a brand-new line of patio furniture.
Peppermill has had a gradual rebrand over the past 18 months, which included a name change to the more apt Peppermill Interiors. The company also relocated in early 2016, moving from Watling Street Business Park on the A5, to new premises in Burntwood.
In addition to the thousands of domestic customers the company has served over the years, Peppermill Interiors has also worked with a number of highprofile commercial clients all over the world, including Starbucks, Jamie’s Italian, Ted Baker and Lush cosmetics, as well as countless independent pubs, coffee shops and restaurants. So, if you’re a local business owner kitting out a cafe, bar or hotel, you can rest assured that Peppermill’s experienced and dedicated team can help you create a look to suit your style and budget. And, as most items are kept in stock, your establishment can be fully furnished in just a few days.
The new showroom is spread over two floors and also has an on-site warehouse, meaning there’s now more room to introduce new lines and many items can be kept in stock in large quantities ready to be taken away when you visit, or to be delivered to your door in a matter of days. Peppermill prides itself in being a little bit quirky and keeping ahead of the trend. Managing Director Scott Humphreys says the company is always looking for new styles and ideas to make sure customers have the best possible selection of products to choose from: “We’re constantly updating our product range, always trying to look forward to what’s going to be popular next season. Unlike most companies, we don’t just import our products; we are manufacturing some items here in the UK, enabling us to reduce lead times for our customers and have new products on the shelf in a matter of weeks.”
If you can’t see anything that quite suits your tastes, you can have many items made to order to your specifications, this includes a selection of dining tables, benches, sideboards and more. Scott says, “We pride ourselves in being able to meet the needs of our customer, our huge selection of items means that we can cater for most tastes, and our bespoke furniture making service allows us to offer the flexibility to customise certain items to best suit the customer’s individual needs.” You can visit Peppermill Interiors’ showroom in Burntwood six days a week; open Monday-Friday 9am-5:30pm and Saturday 10am-5pm. Or you can browse online at www.peppermillinteriors.com.

CHARITY ROAD RUN ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT
Penkridge car enthusiast David Pearce has organised another popular summer road run which took place on Sunday June 11. Owners of any Classic, Collectable, unusual or just old vehicles were encouraged to meet at The Bridgehouse car park, Penkridge at 9.30am onwards for refreshments. The array of cars left the hotel at 11.30am for the short journey to the rally field at Cawarden Reclamations, just outside Rugeley, where anyone interested was able to view the vehicles and talk to the owners about their prized possessions.
The vehicles on display included a 1967 Jaguar E-type, a Bedford van, a Morris 8 delivery van from 1953, a Singer Roadster 4A made in 1947 and a 684 UXM red Chevrolet. Local Business Celebrates Double Success… TWO VERY SPECIAL ANNIVERSARIES
Owners of Canalside Farm, near Stafford, will be celebrating the huge success of their Farm Shop and Café this month, as they mark two very special anniversaries.
The new Café was the second phase of the Farm’s development programme, following the build of the brand new Farm Shop which opened in 2011. Chris continued: “We had always had a Farm Shop on site, but the new, larger shop meant that we could stock so much more, enabling customers to do their weekly shop here. We were also able to introduce a new bakery, butchery and delicatessen, which have also proved very popular. The butchery in particular has been extremely successful, and we have a fantastic team of qualified butchers who make all of their own products here, including burgers, pork pies, faggots, meat balls and a staggering 15 different varieties of sausages!”
The Canalside Café celebrated its 3rd year anniversary on the 14th July, whilst the new Farm Shop has been opened for 6 years on the 1st August. In that time, the two businesses have gone from strength to strength, creating 40 new jobs and selling over 100,000 punnets of strawberries; 20,000 home-made sausage rolls and serving over 110,000 cups of coffee. The family-run Farm, which has been growing its own produce for over 30 years, has always had a Farm Shop on site, but the Café was a completely new venture for the owners when they opened it in 2014. Owners Chris and Wendy Barton said: “We had always wanted to run a catering outlet alongside the Farm Shop, with the aim of using high quality, local produce and freshly grown fruit and vegetables straight from the Farm. But we had never run a catering establishment before, so it was a huge learning curve and quite daunting at times. We are therefore absolutely thrilled by how successful it has been and delighted by the feedback and support we have received from our customers. We have even become a regular ‘stop off’ point for cyclists, walking groups and even the odd canoe!” The new Café has indeed been extremely busy from the moment it opened its doors, and is now turning over a third more than last year. Located on the side of the Trent and Mersey Canal, you can see why people love it so much, as they sit and watch the canal boats go by, whilst sampling some of the region’s finest produce. 38
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST 2017
The new Farm Shop has been so busy since it opened, the turnover has actually increased by five times that of the old shop! The owners are now hoping to expand the shop further and are looking at ways to increase the number of car parking spaces, in order to cope with the ever increasing demand. Chris concluded: “We are always looking at ways in which we can improve our offer to customers and would like to develop the site so that we can give people not just a fantastic food offering, but also a great family day out.” Canalside Farm Shop is located in Great Haywood, just 6 miles from Stafford. It is situated just off the A51, between Stone and Rugeley (postcode ST18 0RQ).

Helenium Collection PRETTY IN PINK My garden is so often full of the blazing hot colours of my helenium collection that at times it’s lovely to sit and relax surrounded by softer, calmer coloured flowers and what is more calming than pink. There are so many shades of pink flower to choose, from the palest blush through to luxurious lipstick pink. Pink is an easy colour to combine – just avoid orange unless you like jarring clashes. Here are some of my summertime favourite pink flowers. For early summer the pink drumsticks of the bistort (Persicaria bistorta Superba) are easy to grow in most soil types and look great paired with violet cranesbills. Later in the summer another Persicaria, Rosea, puts on a stunning show of tall stems covered with pale pink flowers over many months. Veronica Pink Damask creates a similar effect but on a far smaller scale. Another plant with upright stems and pink flowers is Lobelia Compton Pink. These perennial lobelias are nothing like the half-hardy bedding plants and they come back year after year to grace a sunny spot in the garden. There are many lovely pink hardy geraniums to choose from. The low growing, sun loving “Elke” and “Striatum” are particularly tough and make a lovely edging against a patio or path. “Sherwood” is taller and has intriguing, rolled up petals. Scent in the garden is very important and the border pink “Devon Wizard” has a spellbinding fragrance and bold, bright flowers that are also great for cutting. If you keep him deadheaded he will weave his magic right to the end of autumn For a moist or even wet soil, perhaps by a pond or stream then candelabra primulas are a good choice. One of the best pink flowered one is Beesiana because it isn’t too tall and floppy and it will grow in drier (but not too dry!) soils as well.
One of the most impressive pink flowers in my garden are the large, thistle-like, fuchsia-pink heads of the Stemmacantha that erupt from ping-pong ball sized silver buds in June and July. Once the flowers have finished the seed heads give prolonged interest and feed finches in winter. Another striking looking flower is that of the Japanese Burnet (Sanguisorba Lilac Squirrel), affectionately known as the Barbara Cartland flower in our garden as the long, feathery, candy pink flowers look just like the one of the feather boas that might have graced the great lady’s outfits. Echinacea (Coneflower) have become very popular over the last few years, but some of the new, exotically coloured varieties aren’t very hardy. I stick to the old, pink-flowered favourites like Ruby Star with its large pink daisy flowers and prickly, honey-scented cones. A must for bees and butterflies! With so many lovely flowers and shades to choose from there’s no reason why your garden shouldn’t be pretty in pink the whole summer long! Imagine spending a late summer evening on the sweeping lawn of an historic country house listening to music some of the UK’s finest musical talent. Sandon Hall’s two-night musical spectacular will offer visitors just that. On Friday evening the UK’s favourite musical theatre concert tour – Beyond the Barricade – will take the stage to recreate original West End and Broadway musical hit songs with amazing authenticity. With a cast made up of past principal performers from Les Miserables, this two hour show is a must-see for fans of musical theatre. Saturday evening, meanwhile, will see Gordon Giltrap - widely regarded as one of the best acoustic guitar players in the world - draw on a career spanning 5 decades and a wide range of genres including of classical, soaring prog rock and folk guitar pieces - to entertain the crowds. The evening will then take a more classical tone as Access All Arias, the hugely talented three-part harmony group featuring Sarah Ryan, Helen Hobson and Sarah Eyden, presents a classical repertoire with trademark humour and personality. Sandon Hall, lying off the A51 between Stafford and Stone lends the perfect backdrop to this celebration of sublime music. With the imposing neo-Jacobean house forming a backdrop to performances, the audience can relax in the 50 acre formal garden’s late summer glory. Tettenhall College REDEVELOPMENT WORK TO START AT HISTORIC WOLVERHAMPTON SCHOOL
Work is now under way on a 3 million pound redevelopment project at Tettenhall College.
for Sixth Form places in September 2017 and is open to applicants with immediate effect.
The historic independent school, which has seen a recent rise in pupil numbers, recently unveiled their designs of how some of the new developments will look.
The School’s Boarding Houses will also be refurbished with a modern and welcoming new look as well as stylish ensuite bathrooms.
Plans include a striking new sixth form centre, a modernised library, upgraded boarding houses and additional sporting facilities. The stunning new sixth form centre at the heart of the School will provide the best of both worlds for pupils with a mezzanine ICT and study area. A brand new contemporary sixth form common room is also planned and is due to be completed by Autumn 2017. Headmaster David Williams said: “We are very pleased that work will begin on these exciting redevelopments at Tettenhall College. We are already proud of our educational offering to pupils and the proposed upgrades will strengthen this further. “The work undertaken will blend the contemporary with the historic, which supports our drive to maintain traditional values while moving forward with the times.”
Sport will be given a boost with the installation of two multi-purpose games areas, for tennis, netball and football. In addition, the School’s squash courts have been given a refurbishment thanks to a former pupil’s generous legacy. Graham Aston a keen squash player and former Head Boy, left a £400,000 legacy to the School to develop the sport at the School. As a result of this funding, the School is able to offer several academic scholarships available for students looking

As part of the works, renovation of The Towers, one of Wolverhampton’s few Grade II* listed buildings, will be undertaken. The ‘Towers’ were added in 1866 by eccentric owner and inventor Colonel Thomas Thorneycroft but now houses the School’s theatre which regularly hosts local community theatre groups. Work has already commenced on the project and will be completed over the summer holidays.

SENIOR SCHOOL’S REFRESHING APPROACH DELIVERS EXCEPTIONAL OUTCOMES Hidden away in Cannock town centre is a thriving independent, co-educational boarding and day school, where pupils think for themselves, discover their passion for learning and thrive in a happy and friendly environment.
makes this the school of choice for many parents. As part of its preparation to Higher Education, all pupils receive one-to-one support through the application process to their acceptance. Thorough careers guidance, trips to Universities and visits from university admissions tutors are all part of their programme. As well as taking pupils from across the county, the school also welcomes pupils from around the world and there is a vibrant boarding community. Local pupils are all members of one of our three Houses (named after inspirational local people: education minister Jennie Lee; inventor and chess master Vernon Parton; and physician Frank Tylecote) and are invited to take part in the wealth of after-school and weekend activities and clubs. Boarding opportunities are afforded to every pupil in preparation for independent living at university and beyond.
Founded in 1879, Chase Grammar School has been delivering exceptional outcomes for pupils from all backgrounds for the last two centuries and combines high academic standards with holistic and pastoral care. The school’s mission is to develop its pupils into wellrounded, self-assured adults, capable of navigating complex social and cultural environments with confidence. We wish to enable them to learn how to persevere and make appropriate decisions in a range of situations, developing into life-long learners, who can lead and take responsibility for themselves and others within their community. Senior school life at Chase Grammar is varied, vibrant and fun. Encouragement, expertise and guidance is ever-present in the pursuit of academic excellence. A wide and varied curriculum offers choice for our pupils and the pastoral care and holistic approach combines to provide an unrivalled nurturing environment for pupils preparing for their GCSEs, A Levels and entry pathways to universities and apprenticeships. The school is highly ranked for academic results (100% A*-C at GCSE; 80% A*-B at A Level), showing that our approach to learning, in which we focus upon the development of character as much as knowledge, really works. “Pupils of all ages are happy and confident individuals who feel well supported by their teachers” (ISI Inspection Report 2017) Under the stewardship of Principal, Dr Paul Silverwood, Chase Grammar School teachers are united in their vision to engage the minds and enrich the lives of their pupils with innovative and varied learning programmes. The expectation is that every pupil will capture a deep understanding of, and a keen interest in, their academic subjects. Parents and carers play an important role in their child’s development and at Chase Grammar there are many ways they can get involved with the school. Through detailed reports which are sent home five times each year, parents evenings and regular communication, each pupils’ academic progress and attitude to learning is recorded and analysed enabling individual needs to be identified and addressed in a professional and caring manner. Chase Grammar is an independent fee-paying school, however, due to the support from the Achieve Education Group, it can offer significant scholarships and bursaries to pupils that clearly demonstrate a desire to learn and achieve. The pupils benefit from small class sizes, a broad academic curriculum, opportunities to study a range of modern and classical languages, a full programme of enrichment activities, one-to-one support from tutors who help them to set targets and meet with them as individuals, and an international environment where different cultures are celebrated and pupils become global citizens who will want to give back to their own communities. Above all, Chase Grammar School endeavours to educate well-rounded, accountable individuals with the compassion, courage and confidence to engage and excel in any walk of life.

HAPPY NHS PATIENTS AT PRIVATE HOSPITAL Based in Tettenhall, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital offers NHS Choose & Book clinics in medical practices at Brewood and Northgate, Bridgnorth. If more convenient, NHS patients can ask their GP to refer them to these local clinics. Should a surgical procedure be required, this will be provided at the well appointed hospital in Wood Road. One of the patients on the NHS Choose & Book scheme, Mr Robert Pickering of Wednesfield, was referred on the NHS to Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital. At the end of March, he underwent a total hip replacement with consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr Eric Isbister. A consultant for 23 years, who in addition to his work with Nuffield Health, works at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, Mr Isbister is a senior arthroplasty surgeon specialising in hip and knee replacement surgery. Happy hip replacement patient Mr Pickering turns 75 this year and says, “The whole experience was far better than I expected. I have had no pain at all. I was in hospital for less than 3 days and I am extremely grateful for the care I received. I would like to express my thanks to all the staff involved with the operation and for looking after me from pre-op to discharge.”
For the last two years, the hospital has been named as a top performer in the NHS Partners Network Report on independent sector providers caring for NHS patients. In April 2017, the Care Quality Commission rated the hospital as ‘good’ for all patients, whether insured, self pay or NHS. Since 2016 the private hospital has been the medical services supplier to Wolverhampton Wanderers. In the last 18 months, a £1.9 million imaging suite was installed which is open six days a week, providing rapid access and no waiting lists. Rotary Club of Cannock Charity Golf Day On one of the warmest days this year Wednesday 14th June the Rotary Club of Cannock held its annual golf day at The Chase Golf Club. This year the Rotary club had a tremendous support with some 20 teams taking part in event from across the region. The Rotary Club also received sponsorship from 30 local companies which made a significant contribution to ensuring the day was a success. The day included a virtual par three competition on the Chase Golf Clubs golf simulator a putting competition and Stableford team event on the magnificent parkland course. There was also a free barbecue and drinks at the halfway house.
This Golf day which is now an established event in the Rotary calendar raised over £5000 and this year The Cannock Friends of St Giles Hospice and The Stafford & Cannock League Friends are among the charities that will benefit. The Rotary Club of Cannock are already starting to plan next year’s event which will be held in June 2018 at The Chase Golf Club. If you wish to find out more about the Rotary Club of Cannock, please email secretary@cannockrotary.co.uk or visit the club’s web site at www.cannockrotary.co.uk
The day concluded with a 3 course meal and prize presentations with guest being entertained by Denny Waters a comedian from Liverpool. This year’s winning team were Bardsley Construction, Midland Building Products came a close second losing out by just 2 points, the team from Mossvale finished 3rd just 4 points behind the winning team. Leading the Way in Varicose Vein Treatment First in the West Midlands. The Vein Clinic, lead by Mr Simon Hobbs, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, is the first in the West Midlands to offer the latest in technology for treating varicose veins. The clinic, situated in the Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital, has introduced the VenaSeal Closure system as a minimally invasive treatment option for visible varicose veins, which enables people to have their veins treated with less discomfort. The VenaSeal Closure system uses a medical grade super glue to seal off the damaged veins responsible for causing unsightly, bulging varicose veins in the legs. This treatment is performed as a walkin, walk-out procedure under local anaesthetic, with greatly enhanced recovery compared to traditional varicose vein treatments. Compared to other minimally invasive treatments such as laser or radiofrequency ablation, the VenaSeal Closure system involves many fewer injections in the leg and there is often no need to wear compression stockings
afterwards. This treatment takes the discomfort out of having your veins treated and means that you can be quickly back to full activity enjoying the benefits of healthy feeling and great looking legs.
affected equally. If veins are left untreated, they can lead to bleeding, eczema, phlebitis, brown skin discolouration and potentially leg ulcers, which take a long time to heal.
Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves in the veins. When the vein valves fail, pooled blood can cause painful and unsightly bulges at the skin’s surface.
During a consultation, an ultra sound scan will be performed to detect the source of the problem and from the size and position, indicate the optimum treatment. Recognised by all major Medical Insurers. For self-paying patients, the consultation fee is £150 and an ultrasound of both legs is £99. For more information visit www.simonhobbsveins.co.uk
Symptoms include aching and itching, swelling and restless legs at night and the sensation of throbbing over the vein, with both men and women being

SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC
We are continuing the theme of looking at the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac; for September exploring Leo and Virgo. Being born on the first or last day of a sign, in astrological terms, means being born on a cusp. Thus, there is a benefit from reading that sign and that following or preceding.
Leo - The Lion July 23rd August 22nd
Element: Fire Ruling planet: The Sun Symbol: The Lion Stone: Peridot Life Pursuit: To lead the way Vibration: Radiant Energy Leo’s Secret Desire: To be a star More Astrology Traits and Personality Charismatic and Stylish: Leos are born fortunate; charismatic and positive-thinking they attract an abundance of 58

friends and opportunities. Their ruling planet is the Sun, and this is often reflected in their sunny and happy nature. Loyal and Devoted: Once a Lion is committed to a relationship, they are totally devoted and faithful. For a Leo, when a relationship is over it is over for good. Soul evolution of Leo: There are three levels of soulevolution of the Leos. The highest is represented by the Sphinx; wise beyond their years and great teachers to others. Proud and Born to Lead: No matter what level they have attained, all Leos are trendsetters, leaders and adventurers. Their weakness is their pride. This is one sign where the saying “flattery will get you everything” applies.
Element: Earth Ruling Planet: Mercury Symbol: The Virgin Stone: Sapphire Life Pursuit: To do the right thing Vibration: Compassionate and caring Secret Desire: To love and be loved in return More Astrology Traits and Personality Ethical with High Standards: An in-tune Virgo is a treat to meet. They are efficient, have strong ethics and need to see the practical worth of any undertaking. Self-sacrificing and considerate: One of the most magical characteristics of the Virgo is no matter how many times life or romance turns sour on them, they still manage to maintain faith in others, refusing to become cynical. Creative and Sensitive: Shy, they are happy to allow others to take centre-stage and often generate their time and energy into making those they love happy or successful.
Virgo - The Virgin August 23rd - September 22nd
Reliable and Understanding: Virgos understand human frailties better than most, because they are so deep and reflective themselves.

WOLGARSTON HIGH SCHOOL PROM On Wednesday 21st June Wolgarston High School held its annual Year 11 prom at The Moat House in Acton Trussell. The event was organised by Mrs Wynn (Family-Links Coordinator). “It was a really amazing evening, we all had so much fun,” said Kiera Hope (Year 11 Student), “It is something we will never forget.” Parents and other students arrived at The Moat House for six o’clock to see the students making their entrances. This year there was a variety of different transportation used. They ranged from Ferraris, Lamborghinis, VW Camper vans, classic Minis to tractors. Students were greeted with custom made nonalcoholic cocktails and were seated at their tables in the main function room, where all of the students dined together on an exclusive three course menu. All of the students were given forms to vote for their Prom King and Queen. Once all of the votes had been counted up, the winners were announced. This year’s Prom King and Queen were Alex Lavender and Emily Harvey-Stephens. “As always it has been a pleasure to organise prom for our students and see them enjoying themselves after working so hard this year at school,” said Mrs Wynn, “They have all done Wolgarston proud”.

Fiat Fan
BY ROB TAYLOR
BRILLIANT VALUE FOR A FAMILY ESTATE
I’ve always been a fan of Fiat. The romantic in me says it’s because my first car was a Punto and now that I’m fast approaching middleage, nostalgia is beginning to take me over completely. However, I’m sure there is more to it than this. Fiat is a manufacturer that is much admired by sensible shoppers like me; people who see for themselves and who, when it comes to advertising at least, always choose to swallow the Matrix’s red pill. I respect that Fiat is still largely unconcerned by ‘brand’ nonsense and remains committed to delivering big on its ethos of manufacturing masses of unfussy, practical motors allied closely to some halo-model fun stuff. Fiat calls the disparity within its range ‘poles’. And I see what the marketing bods are getting at: a Doblo is certainly poles apart from a 124 Spider. So now with the omnipresent 500 leading the charge, here comes the newest addition to the Fiat stable: the Tipo. The one I have here to test is the Station Wagon variant, but you can have it as a hatchback and most buyers will. After all, you might be thinking, why pay more money for a few extra centimetres of headroom in the back and a bigger boot? Generally I’d agree but in this case I’d argue that the extra spend will be repaid tenfold, assuming you have a family and a dog, because the Tipo is just such 62
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST 2017
staggeringly good value to begin with – what’s another £1000? The Station Wagon range starts at around £14,485 - brilliant value for a proper family estate. Some of you may be looking sideways at that number, sizing it up with suspicion, but there’s no need to be on your guard because I’m pleased to report that the Tipo is more than just good value for money, it punches far above its price-point. Let’s go back to the boot: it is 550 litres, has a double floor, and the rear seats fold properly – the cushions tip and the backrests flip. There are load hooks, and a roller blind that’s easy to remove and which fits under the floor. This is proper design work at work. Moving forwards, the rear gladly accommodates fully-grown adults and keeps them content with soft suspension and comfy seats, making for a far more comfortable interior than can be found in some competitors. Up front there’s surprisingly expensive and agreeably tactile trim, enlivened with myriad gadgets and comfort aids. The main functions are intuitive and easy to reach. Visibility is good, and parking sensors on a vehicle this long are a gift from the gods. This Lounge spec version also boasts climate control, alloy wheels, a integrated Tom Tom sat nav, rear view camera,
automatic lights and wipers, and a lane-keeping and blind spot warning system. When at the wheel Fiat’s Tipo has a relaxed feel to it, as it’s a simple car to drive. The steering is light and direct (‘City mode’ makes it still lighter and is most handy when in tight parking jams) and with a 120 bhp 1.6 Multijet diesel under the bonnet, progress is pleasingly swift. 0-60 mph is done and dusted in around 10 seconds and 320Nm of torque low down in the rev range makes the Tipo decidedly – if incongruously – quick, especially in-gear, at motorway speeds. Of course because you don’t have to rev the engine too hard, official fuel economy is more than respectable at 76.3 mpg – so too are emissions of 99g/km Co2. I averaged around 55 mpg. Taking make-up tips from Fiat’s flagship 124 Spider, the Tipo more than looks the part too, with a wide grille, chromed vents and raked windscreen – which all contribute to a look that is far sportier than the average station wagon. I’m told that as you get older you’re supposed to find racy little two seaters, just like the 124 Spider, ever more alluring but that’s just not the case with me. All in all, it’s the Tipo that’s stolen my heart. I must be Fiat ‘through and through’.
One Size Fits All
BY ROB TAYLOR
OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE
Making a car suitable for every world market is a big challenge – a challenge that has been left unanswered by car makers for decades – until now. Now there is Ford’s new EcoSport, which is trumpeted as the first massmarket vehicle fit to be called a true ‘world car’. From the moment I first read the press release I was sceptical; the images of the EcoSport left me cold and so did the concept. Cars should be answers to questions posed by the unique challenges faced by people on different continents, not one-sizefits-all compromises. Of course, there’s no such problem when it comes to sports or luxury cars, because here making a single model and then selling it in as many worldwide markets as possible is de rigueur – but that’s not the case when it comes to the mass car market, where Ford firmly plies its trade. Ford is the marque of the everyman, the blue-collar worker from the brand with the blue oval. Its attempt to unify differences between cars of the same size across different regions, to reflect differing tastes, sounds like a shortcut to bankruptcy to me. The EcoSport does a very good job of being a scaled-down facsimile of
every other mini-SUV on the roads today. It is really small in real life – much more petite than in photos. The distinctive chrome-barred grill almost looks too large for its overall form. You can bet that this sizeable ‘mouth’ isn’t entirely essential to the performance of the 90 bhp 1.5 litre diesel engine, which, while well matched to the 5-speed manual gearbox, requires considerable patience in order to elicit optimum performance.
plain and simple. Entry-level Zetec versions offer up 16” alloys, LED daytime running lights, air-con, electric windows, Bluetooth and USB functionality. Mid-spec Titanium models come with partleather upholstery, larger alloys, automatic lights and wipers, keyless entry and go, climate control and cruise control. Go beyond this spec and woe betide you when it comes to residuals.
However it’s fair to say that despite vehicle development being overseen by designers and engineers from 16 countries, none of them had performance down as a priority. Even the usually involving dynamics that have been Ford’s trademark for so many years seem to have been dialled down in the interests of uniformity. I suspect windy, undulating B-roads don’t exist elsewhere on the globe. And I imagine the EcoSport’s price tag of around £15,000 sounds pretty pricey in certain corners of the world as well - especially in Brazil (where it is designed) and India (where it is built).
The EcoSport’s driving position is good; steering wheel and seat adjustments allow for modest comfort but, again, this is a small vehicle, essentially a hatchback wearing high heels. And it’s the cabin’s lack of width which most people will take issue with – especially if you enjoy visiting McDonald’s Drive-Thru on a regular basis. Understandably overall space and practicality is fairly limited, although I was able to accommodate two adult passengers in the back with relative ease. Boot space is surprisingly limited, however. Economy is up at around 50 mpg, which is commendable, and Co2 emissions are pretty good also.
Inside there are three trim levels and all arrive with a decent amount of equipment. In vogue LED day-running lights stand out among other style flourishes, but the EcoSport largely keeps things
In short there’s just too much compromise and not enough clarity. It strikes me that too many cooks really do spoil the broth…

HIGH SCORES FROM SURVEYS FOR WOLVERHAMPTON PRIVATE HOSPITAL
The health sector regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), has given a rating of ‘Good’ for Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital. This recent report followed an inspection in late 2016. The results from the March 2017 Nuffield Health patient satisfaction survey also back up these findings, where the Wolverhampton Hospital recently came joint 2nd for overall satisfaction at 97%, out of 31 Nuffield Health hospitals in the UK. The CQC inspection report gave a rating of good overall and specifically for effectiveness, safety, caring and responsiveness. Several areas of good practice were highlighted including the induction process for new staff and positive incident reporting culture with good quality reports. The medicine management system and safety checklists were good and there are supportive managers at all levels and staff told the inspectors that managers were visible and approachable. The protected swipecard access in areas of the diagnostic imaging department was commended. Every month Nuffield Health collects patient feedback data for each of the 31 hospitals in the group. This information is used as a benchmark to highlight areas for improvement and to share good practice. Looking at the service areas, the Wolverhampton private hospital scored 100% for gynaecology, oncology (cancer treatment) and cosmetic surgery and 98% for orthopaedics, general surgery, ophthalmology and urology. The overall quality of catering was rated 95% and 98% for housekeeping and pharmacy. There were very high scores of 99% for confidence in consultants, nurses and physiotherapists. Equally 99% score was achieved for patients being treated with dignity and respect. For all patients, whether insured, self pay or NHS, 100% said they would recommend the hospital to friends and family. 66
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST 2017
Hospital Director Karen Pattison commented, “I am delighted with the results of the Autumn inspection undertaken by the Care Quality Commission and our own monthly survey, both of which we welcome. We like to know where improvements can be made so we can deliver even higher patient satisfaction. I would like to thank and congratulate the whole team on these fantastic achievements which clearly demonstrates that we are working together to do things right for patients.” Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital provides a range of clinical services for both private and NHS patients. The private hospital in Tettenhall has two operating theatres of which one has a laminar flow system, to control air and reduce infection during operations.
