Want to ensure your children receive an inheritance?

I have recently engaged with new clients whose priority was to ensure their children received an inheritance on their demise. Their initial thoughts were to just gift the children some money as they had set aside ÂŁ100,000 however the difficulty with this is that should one of them go into care in the future, it could be deemed self-depravation so they decided against this option. The fear now is that should one of them die and the remaining spouse goes into long term care, their savings and potentially the equity in their property could be eroded over time leaving the children with little or no inheritance. So how can you protect your hard earned estate to ensure that your

4

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2019

family receive what you believe is rightfully theirs on your demise? Firstly, and very easily you can protect 50% of your family residence by simply changing the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common with each spouse owning 50%. You then create a property trust in your will, leaving your share of the property in trust to the children with the surviving spouse having a lifetime interest. This ensures that following the first death, if the remaining spouse goes into care, then their share of the property is protected. Secondly, on this occasion as both parties are in good health and are aged 67 and 64 respectively, the money that they had earmarked for the children could be used in the following way: Invest ÂŁ100,000 into a discounted gift trust which, for estates in excess of the IHT allowance, gives an immediate reduction on the value of the estate. From this investment you take

a 4% income that is utilised to fund the premiums on a whole of life second death life assurance policy written in trust for your beneficiaries. This policy will, on second death depending on lifestyle, health, height and weight, pay out circa ÂŁ190,000 which would leave the children with the pay-out plus the residual fund from the initial investment. This method can work for any size investment and for anyone with an inheritance tax liability it is a sure fire way of immediately reducing your IHT liability.

Are you a higher rate tax payer nearing retirement? I meet with lots of new clients who are saving for retirement and for some reason they save into deposit accounts and cash or equity ISAs. This is all well and good however they are seriously missing out on

the tax savings you can make by contributing to a pension. To give you an idea of the potential benefits of saving into a pension, if someone is earning £80,000 per annum and saves £16,800 of their net salary, if they were to contribute the same amount into their pension by means of salary exchange, the gross amount paid into the pension would be £28,000. When they retire, assuming that they become basic rate tax payers, after tax the amount they would receive would be £23,800, an increase of £7,000 made purely by investing into a pension rather than taking as salary and paying the tax.

deemed tax free cash and the remainder falls within your personal allowance. This is also ideal for anyone nearing retirement who has little or no retirement provision. If any of the above ideas seem relevant to you or you would like to find out if there are ways to improve your financial situation please do not hesitate to contact us.

The initial meeting is at our expense and comes with no obligation.

You may think that you cannot afford to lose any of your salary however what I find is that most people have savings so you could utilise these to benefit from the tax uplift.

Basic rate tax payers retiring early If you are a basic rate tax payer and thinking of retiring early you can benefit in a similar way. If you have savings you are allowed to pay into a pension the full amount of earned income in a year so for someone earning £16,000 per annum, if they were to pay in £12,800 then HMRC would give a tax credit of £3,200 leaving you with £16,000 invested. Assuming you retire early and have no other income then the £16,000 would in effect be tax free as 25% is

Rugeley Model Boat Club We meet every Monday afternoon 2.00pm to about 4.00pm at the idyllic setting of Manor Park Sailing Club at Kings Bromley. We sail radio controlled yachts; ideal for all those retired exsailors who still want the thrill of sailing, yet from dry land, with adjacent toilets! We sail two types of yachts, traditionally the club has sailed the kit-built yacht class known as Victoria’s, but since end of 2018 we have expanded into sailing the rather superb DragonFlite 95’s. We have regular informal heats during the summer, competing for our RMBC annual trophies - great fun. See pictures of some our members with their Victorias. In calm weather we also sail our scale models, often built from scratch with fine details, often including “lights, smoke & horn!” We also have a couple of medium-fast electric model boats sailed. Make contact with us first, to arrange entry to the gated road, then come along and see for yourself. Members pay a small subscription to our club, 10

essentially to cover the required model boat insurance, but you need to join the main sailing club as category “radio sailor” first. A common question is “What’s the difference between the two model yacht clubs?” The MPRSC use more sophisticated and much more expensive yachts, enter and host both National and International competitions, and go by the strict MYA rule-book! At RMBC we are more laid back and just enjoy our sailing - so you touch boats near a buoy what’s the problem?

Find out more either by visiting www. rugeleymodelclub.org.uk or telephone Peter 01543 253853. So give us a ring to come along and try for yourself, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats

Jessica Beasley, Digital Marketing Manager at Tile Choice will be embarking on a cycle journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats in September in aid of The Prince’s Trust, aiming to raise £3,000. Having started cycling just over 18 months ago when I signed up to ride from London to Paris in 24 hours to raise money for Mind Charity. This was my first experience of an endurance cycling event, the camaraderie and support from others riders was invaluable as we all helped each other along the way, from fixing each other’s punctures to telling jokes to keep the spirits high when it got tough.

have also pledged to double the money I raise, so please do give generously to this fantastic charity. The Prince’s Trust is an ambitious and innovative organisation which believes that every young person should have the chance to embrace exciting opportunities. The Prince’s Trust help 11 to 30 year olds who are unemployed or struggling at school to transform their lives. Many of these people are in, or leaving, care, facing homelessness, have mental health issues or have been in trouble with the law. Over £1.4 billion has been returned to society through help for disadvantaged young people over the past 10 years. The free programmes for young people provide both the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives whilst developing key skills and boosting their confidence so they too can dream big. Over the next 10 years The Prince’s Trust plans to help one million more young people to transform their lives by providing them with skills to live, learn and earn. Ride Across Britain has been an iconic cycle challenge since before the Tour de France, it has and always will be a true test of both stamina and will, whilst passing through the most breath taking variety of scenery. Whilst there are shorter routes from end to end, the Deloitte RAB is carefully planned to allow riders to appreciate the contours of the country, despite adding some extra miles on each day.

Cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats is a trip that any keen cyclist will no doubt have on their bucket list. Covering 980 miles cycling through 27 different counties whilst passing through England, Wales and Scotland over 9 days. The challenge presented by the repeated days in the saddle, cycling over 100 miles each day and camping along the way sounded too good to resist so I have signed up to ride the Deloitte Ride Across Britain and chosen to support their partner charity The Prince’s Trust. From the rugged coastline of Cornwall, to the rolling hills and valleys in the North of England, right up to the barren majesty of the Scottish Highlands. We will be challenged by the diverse nature of the landscape but also treated to a range of moorland, green valleys, winding back lanes, stunning yet hilly coastal roads and many historic sites.

Of course it is vital to get the training miles in before such a big ride and I’m very lucky to have the support from Tile Choice who not only support me with my training regime but 16 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2019

I’m proud to be supporting the amazing initiatives which The Prince’s Trust provide, their fundraising efforts and donations help to support 50,000 young people into jobs, education or training. Anyone interested in supporting me – no matter how big or small – please head to my Virgin Money Giving page: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JessicaBeasley2 . Thank you to anyone who has supported me so far and to Tile Choice for being incredibly supportive.

the Town we were constantly recognising fellow W.I. ladies by their badges, lanyards and symbols of sunflowers (Calendar Girls) and daisies (The Unofficial W.I. Facebook Group)

The National Federation of Women’s Institute’s (NFWI) held their Annual Meeting this month in Bournemouth when Cannock, Penkridge and Heath Hayes W.I.’s Link Delegate Jill Gooch attended along with 4000 other W.I. representatives from around the country. The main item on the Agenda was to vote on two Resolutions proposed by members for adoption by the Programme Action section of the W.I. This year they were “A Call Against the Decline in Rural Bus Services”; and “Don’t Fear the Smear”. Following a debate where experts in their fields spoke for or against each resolution; and then a question/ answer opportunity; delegates were able to make an informed decision and voted 96% FOR for Resolution 1; and 97% FOR for Resolution 2.

Representatives will report back, and encourage members to embrace the aims of the W.I. in their national campaigns, and drive forward these issues at local level. Our W.I. meetings are on the second Thursday of the month 10.30am at St Luke’s Church Centre, Cannock. Visitors are always welcome to come and join us for refreshments and a chat. Cannock’s popular street market to be trialled for an extra day Cannock Chase Council is delighted to announce that the street market in Cannock Town Centre will be trialed on Tuesdays during the summer of 2019. Cannock’s regular street market usually takes place on a Friday, and following a Cabinet decision on 18 April, will now be trialled on Tuesdays as well. From Tuesday 11 June the market will be in Cannock Town Centre from 9am until 4pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. Councillor Gordon Alcott, Portfolio Leader for Town Centre Regeneration said “This is a good move for Cannock and will help to increase the footfall in the town centre. Sketts street market has been running for the last four years and they offer up to 25 stalls offering a wide variety of goods and produce.” Sketts were appointed as the new street operator in October 2015 and have successfully built up a quality and varied market that increases the footfall into the town centre.

Cheslyn Hay Community Choir Summer Concert Cheslyn Hay Community Choir was formed about 18 months ago with the objective of improving people’s’ physical and mental health and wellbeing through songs. Research has shown that singing helps to lower anxiety and relieve stress, lower blood pressure, improve breathing, release feel-good hormones and singing in a group amplifies these benefits. Many new friendships have been forged and the choir takes part in other social events - enjoying trips to concerts, the cinema and meals out together. Since the early days in January 2018, numbers have grown together with the confidence of the group who performed at the Armistice Day Centenary celebrations, sang with the Salvation Army band round the Christmas tree as part of the Christmas Concert in the village hall, and also took part in Wyrley’s Got Talent auditions. 26

Wasp Facts by Penkridge Pest Control Ltd The sting of a wasp should wear off within 24 hours but for a small minority of people the venom in their sting causes anaphylactic shock which can be fatal.

09

Penkridge Pest Control Ltd

Wasps can sting over and over again. Adult wasps mainly feed on nectar, but the majority of their time is taken up by foraging for food for their carnivorous young, mostly insects or spiders. This can be great for our gardens as they eat the garden pests.

PPC I Won’t sting you for price! FAST RESPONSE 7 DAYS A WEEK

Wasps make nests from paper. They chew up strips of bark and spit it out again to form a rough paper. Some wasps make nests in basements, sheds or dark, cool places. A queen starts a new colony each spring. She raises a few worker wasps first to make the nest larger and bring food. Then she starts laying eggs. A colony can grow to 50,000 wasps in one summer. In the winter all the wasps die except for a few new queens. The new queens spend the winter in an old log or burrow. In the spring, they make new colonies. If you need any treatment against wasps in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196. Wasp removal is just £40.00. We do not charge any extra for weekends or evenings.

Safety tips for your dog this summer We have had the wettest June on record! Fingers crossed that summer will make an appearance soon. We are all hoping for a repeat from summer 2018 which was phenomenal! Here are a few tips for your dogs, when the hot weather finally comes to the UK. Our dogs love summer just as much as we do! For many, it’s the best time of year to be out, about, and enjoying all that the summer has to offer. Read on to learn some important summer safety tips for your dogs.

Don’t leave your dog in the car. Even if it is a relatively cool 22°c outside, the internal temperature of a car can reach 47°c within one hour. Even with the windows down, a dog can easily overheat if left in these conditions. Watch when you walk. Limit when and how much you do when it’s hot and humid. Take walks in the cooler part of the day, in the early morning and evening hours. Carry water too, enough for both of you. Check the pavement. Before you head out for a walk, touch the pavement. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paw pads. Walk on the grass and stay off the tarmac.

Take care of at-risk dogs. Be watchful if you have a snub-nosed pet like a pug or bulldog. Their smaller airways make it harder for them to release heat when they pant. It’s also easy for old and overweight dogs, or those with heart and breathing problems, to get heatstroke. Cooling your dog. Let your dog stand in a cool paddling pool. Aside from panting, dogs cool down through the sweat glands in their paws. Having them stand in a cool pool of water or giving them a quick foot soak can help lower their body temperature. It can also be helpful to put some cold water on your dog’s chest. Cooling dog pads or a cooling coat can also help.

Offer plenty of water and shade. Don’t leave your pooch alone outside for long. And when he is there, make sure he has shade and lots of fresh, cool water.

Make cool treats. Help your dog chill from the inside out. Frozen treats, such as flavoured ice cubes or Kongs filled with frozen food are a great way to keep dogs cool and entertained.

Keep an eye on the humidity, too. When the air is full of moisture, your dog may not be able to pant enough to cool off. That can raise his temperature, which can lead to heatstroke. Stay inside, and limit exercise too. 28

Bearded Irises – Chelsea Showstoppers Every year when I watch the Chelsea Flower Show on TV I am bewitched by the sheer flamboyance and beauty of the bearded irises on show. The large, showy blooms are in many colours and it’s a shame that we don’t have “smelly-vision” as most are sweetly scented. They are called “bearded” because of the line of “hairs” on the lower petals (the “falls”). These beards are often in a contrasting colour to the petal and act like runway lights to guide bees to the nectar and pollen. Iris is a large, varied family and it is one where you need to know exactly which type you are planting: some grow in water and some in deserts. Bearded irises are no exception and it is important to give them the right conditions if you want them to thrive and flower.

Baby (butterscotch and caramel, scented like lemon meringue pie). Next come the Intermediates (16in – 28” / 40-70cm) that flower from early May. My favourites are Red Zinger (deep red) and Light Cavalry (muted plum). The flowers on show at Chelsea are mainly the tall bearded types (28-48” / 70-120cm) and these have the showiest flowers. Among the old varieties I find Braithwaite (pale and dark blue), Black Tie Affair (blackpurple) and Kent Pride (brown and gold) to be really reliable. After flowering you can cut the flower stems off as close to the rhizome as possible using a sharp, sterile knife since leaving them on can cause rotting of the plants. Bearded irises are tough, drought tolerant plants very well suited to modern as well as traditional gardens looking equally as good as drifts or as single, statement plants and with so many heights and colours to choose from there’s no reason why every sunny garden shouldn’t have some.

They grow from a knobbly rhizome – a sort of modified root. These need to be planted so that they are not completely buried – maybe half way up their thickness. They like a sunny spot: this year’s sun makes next year’s flowers. When planted in the shade or with their rhizomes buried, they struggle to flower. The ground must be free draining as they will rot in claggy, soggy soils: add grit below the rhizomes if your soil is moist and forget about growing them if it’s boggy – there are plenty of other types of iris you can grow! You can plant pot-grown bearded iris at any time but often nurseries supply them bare rooted as they are difficult to keep nice in a pot. They are divided usually in August by lifting the entire plant and breaking off new rhizomes each with at least one fan of leaves. Shorten the leaves by about a half or two-thirds to prevent the plants from rocking in the wind until they are rooted. It is important to keep your knife or secateurs sterile to avoid transferring any diseases between plants. Once planted keep watered but not wet. There are many hundreds of varieties in a range of heights and colours to choose from. My favourites tend to be older varieties but any of the new ones currently available are just as good. The flowering season starts in late April with the very dwarf varieties. These are less than 16in or 40cm tall and best suited for a rockery. I love Green Spot (white with green) and Oriental 30

Cannock Chase MP welcomes new business to Cannock Chase Amanda Milling, Member of Parliament for Cannock Chase, has welcomed a new business to Hednesford’s Market Street. Gilbert and Day Independent Funeral Directors is the newest business to open its premises on the busy Market Street in Hednesford, after three generations of the same family started their own business. The business has been opened by mother and son team, Pauline Day and Craig Gilbert, and they are assisted by Pauline’s grandson, Joe. Having been a Funeral Director for many years, Craig wanted to open his own funeral directors and chose Hednesford as a location for the business. Bringing years of experience in the industry to Hednesford, the family pride themselves on offering a personal service and have completely refurbished the Market Street property to cater for the needs of bereaved families. The family is also joined by Alfie Gilbert who, at 13 years old, wants to be part of the family business.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2019

When Alfie was 10, he acted as a funeral director at his grandmother’s funeral. Since then, he has wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and take it up as a career. Amanda Milling, Member of Parliament for Cannock Chase, said: “I was delighted to visit the new business and see a new family business opening. I was especially pleased to meet Alfie, who at 13 years old is eager to join the family business.” She added: “I wish them every success with their new business and welcome them to Hednesford.”

On the Cross City North, four trains an hour will run to the end of the line at Lichfield Trent Valley throughout the day. There will be the introduction of a new 2340 departure from Birmingham New Street to Four Oaks on weekdays, and a 2325 departure on Saturdays.

WMR Investment West Midlands Railway is proud to be investing in our region. Whether you’re working or playing, an early riser or stay out later, West Midlands Railway will get you there and back safely with all the improvements taking place now and over the years to come.

Services calling at local stations to Wolverhampton will see an additional later train from Birmingham at 2338 from Monday to Saturday. Richard Brooks, customer experience director for West Midlands Railway said: “The timetable improvements that were introduced in May will bring a range of benefits to passengers, with more direct services to destinations across our network and improved capacity on some of our busiest services. The changes we are making across the West Midlands will open up new opportunities for passengers to travel by train for both work and leisure – with additional earlier, later and weekend services making rail travel a fantastic option for getting around the region. “However, this isn’t the whole story. We will also have a further timetable change in two years’ time, where passengers will see further benefits from the introduction of new trains onto the network, which when fully operational, will increase capacity by 25%.” West Midlands Railway is connecting the West Midlands, all the places that we love to visit, all the things we love to do, all the people we love to be with. We’re helping build the best possible West Midlands we can. We’re West Midlands Railway and we love it here.

Sunday 19th May saw a timetable change that will bring benefits across the network, with more trains, more seats and more options to choose from in various locations. What can you expect to see from this timetable change? Electric trains will be introduced on the Chase Line, following the £100m electrification of the route between Walsall and Rugeley Trent Valley. This means faster trains, with more carriages and extra seats. From local stations along the Chase Line, there will be an hourly service to London Euston and a half hourly service to Birmingham Airport from Monday to Saturday.

One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see DOVES at Birmingham Innercity Live taking place at Perry Park, Birmingham on Sunday 28th July 2019! One of British music’s rarest treasures, Doves’ reputation as a committed and consistent albums band is gilded by timeless singles including There Goes The Fear, Pounding and Black And White Town. The Manchester band’s four albums to date, the Mercury Prize-nominated brace of Lost Souls and The Last Broadcast, followed by Some Cities and Kingdom Of Rust stand as monuments of refined song writing craft. Each recalls the band’s broad span of musical reference points, from the glinting riches of golden age soul and gritty garage to the woody rhythms of folk. Beyond their dancefloor-friendly singles, Doves’ universe moved around emotive soundscapes and gently sparkling love letters. Demand for their sell-out live performances saw them routinely headlining festival stages, from repeated Glastonbury appearances to 2003’s Teenage Cancer Trust concerts and the BBC Electric Proms. Doves stepped off stage in 2010 and Jimi Goodwin, Andy and Jez Williams went their separate ways for an indefinite period. Yet the lines between them remained connected and their three-decade long friendship persisted as the hiatus drew on. In the absence of a plan, the next chapter began to fall into place and in 2018 they announced their longawaited return. The deafening response to the news that Doves would play their cherished songs again has set the optimistic course for what lies ahead. Doves promise a superb night of entertainment. Be sure to get your tickets for a perfect Summer’s evening, gigs not to be missed... Support for the Birmingham – Perry Park show includes Johnny Marr and The Coral plus more to be advised.

Rotary Club of Cannock Donation to Burntwood & Cannock Chase Community First Responders On Tuesday 23rd April 2019 the Rotary Club of Cannock made a donation of just over £5100 to the Burntwood & Cannock Chase Community First responders towards the purchase of a new emergency vehicle. The money was raised from the Rotary Clubs Christmas collection in Cannock and a substantial legacy left to the Cannock club Trust Fund by the late Dr Davasirvadam (David) Israel who had been an active Rotarian for over 30 years until he passed away in July 2018. The Cannock club members considered that by donating his legacy to this local medical emergency charity was very fitting seeing how Dr David Israel had himself served the local community of Cannock for so many years as a family doctor from his practice in Hednesford. Burntwood & Cannock Chase Community First Responders – Covering Burntwood, Cannock, Hednesford, and Heath Hayes was formed 8 years ago when the West Midlands Ambulance Service identified the need for a communitybased Emergency Response Service. The service is run by volunteers many working full time and responding in their spare time and on top of this, they regularly organise and support fundraising activities and provide free CPR and Defibrillator awareness sessions in their local communities including schools. 42

Pictured; Cannock Rotary Club President David Gardiner and club members presenting the cheque to volunteers from Burntwood & Cannock Chase Community First Responders The cost of a new vehicle together with the installation of Terrafix, the communication system used by WMAS to send job information and give navigational support, vehicle livery markings and the conversion of the vehicle to a Rapid Response Vehicle is £40,000 and this donation has now enabled the vehicle to be ordered and put into service in the near future. From April 2017 to April 2018 the First Responders attended 1350 emergency calls helping to save many lives in our community. This group is the busiest scheme within the West Midlands Ambulance Service region. In 2018 the Group’s activities were recognised when they were presented with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities When in service the new emergency vehicle will have both Dr David Israel name and the Rotary Rondal as part of this livery in recognition of the clubs donation.

CHOCOLATE TORTE serves 16

INGREDIENTS BISCUIT BASE

CHOCOLATE GANACHE

• 175g bourbon biscuits • 110g 70% dark chocolate • 1tbsp of Ovaltine • 225ml of double cream • 85g melted butter • 125g of icing sugar • Multiply by 1.5 if you want to push base up sides of ring. EQUIPMENT

CHOCOLATE TORTE

• 225g 70% dark chocolate • 160g ground almonds • 140g panko • 225g unsalted butter • 340g caster sugar • 6 free range eggs • 1 drop of vanilla

• Spatula • Food processor with blade attachment • Small milk pan • Medium size pan for simmering water.

• 12 inch ring • Flat baking tray • Parchment paper • Kitchen aid mixer with K beater attachment • Metal skewer • Magi-mix with blade attachment

METHOD BISCUIT BASE

Start by melting the butter in a small pan over a medium heat or in a bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, depends on the power of your microwave. pulsing the bourbon biscuits in the magi-mix until they resemble fine crumbs. Mix the cocoa into the biscuit crumbs and pour over the melted butter. Use a metal spoon to thoroughly mix the butter and biscuits together to create a cement like texture. Place a piece of parchment paper on the baking tray making sure it is wide enough to fit the metal ring on it. Empty the biscuit and butter mix into the ring and evenly squash the base down and push up against the sides if using more mix. This doesn’t have to be neat. Place this in the fridge and start the torte.

CHOCOLATE TORTE

Melt the chocolate in a heat proof bowl over lightly simmering water and add in the ground almonds and panko crumbs. Stir this mix until fully combined. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and then beat in the eggs one at a time. Now add the chocolate mix to the butter and eggs and beat vigorously until combined. Take the biscuit base out of the fridge and pour over the chocolate mix. Bake for 55 minutes at 160oC 44

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2019

CHOCOLATE GANACHE

Bring the cream and icing sugar to the boil and then break the chocolate up into it. Stir until the chocolate has melted and the mix is smooth. When the torte is cooled from the oven spread the ganache all over evenly. Allow the ganache to set and then slice and serve with thick double cream and raspberries.

SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT

AGM 2019 SI Cannock & District held its AGM at The Barns on 23rd April. The meeting marked the end of a busy year with President June Bould at the helm. President June said: “Just a year ago I said although we would be busy with Programme Action, our service work, it’s important to remember we are a voluntary organisation and must enjoy ourselves too. I believe we have achieved both during the year. Improving the lives of women and girls has been at the centre of our programme action projects. We have also had fun and friendship at events held during the year”. The year had seen some special events: a visit from Lesley Smith as Peggy Knight; an Open Garden weekend at the homes of the President and another Club member, a summer celebration lunch at Mitton Manor and Christmas celebrations at The Barns as well as many very interesting speakers. During the year club members have continued to support Pathway and Staffordshire Women’s Aid by providing sanitary items; toiletries and Christmas gifts; helped to provide and prepare a Christmas meal at the Soup Kitchen in Mill Street; raised funds for international projects such as Women, Water & Leadership; for the Meru Garden Project and for the organisation’s Emergency Fund, enabling Soroptimists to send funds to any disaster area in the world as soon as needed. A Beetle Drive was one of the events held to raise funds for President June’s chosen charity, the Phoenix Project, a bereavement service for children and young people offered to all who need it by St Giles Hospice. President June was overwhelmed to learn that £1,300 has been raised for this project – a magnificent sum! The Club has worked to raise the profile of Period Poverty: work undertaken by many groups throughout the country has resulted in the Government announcing that sanitary products will be available free of charge in schools and colleges from September 2019 – excellent news! 50 54

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK OUTLOOK || JUNE JULY 2019 STAFFORDSHIRE 2019

Pictured: Left to Right; June Bould, President SI Cannock & District with incoming President Trish Smith The club has also continued its work raising awareness around the issue of healthy relationships. President June said that she particularly wanted to mention the new project ‘Your body Your Rules’: “As President I have been on a journey with this project starting with the training day last July, meeting the ambassadors and staff from five local schools, and during the year attending the workshops. What a honour it was for me as President to attend my first Federation conference and for our Club to be announced winners for the good practice Award for Education for this wonderful project - how proud I am to be a Soroptimist of SI Cannock.” June thanked everyone who had worked to make this project – and all others - such a success. Information about Cannock Soroptimists can be found on their website: www.sigbi.org/cannockand-district; on their face book page: www.facebook.com/SICannock; or the twitter account @sicannock

The Youth Endeavour Award is given to a young person between the ages of 11 and 18 who lives in the District and has made an outstanding contribution to their community, shown great bravery, or helped others in some way. Paije was nominated by Miss Jinks, Director of Year 11 at Cannock Chase High School who described her as “an amazing young lady, who always puts others before herself.” Whilst working part time in a shop Paije recognised that an elderly lady was struggling with her shopping bag and offered to help carry her shopping home, this soon became a regular thing. The school has received emails from the ladies daughter outlining the kindness Paije demonstrates.

them when they are struggling. She volunteers at a local care home by taking the residents to the in-house café, spending time talking to them and accompanies her auntie who works at the care home to take residents into Cannock in their wheelchairs. Outgoing Chairman Councillor Paul Witton said “Paije is really an incredible young lady. I am proud to give this award to such a humble individual, who doesn’t see any of her actions as special. She is a real credit to our District and a perfect role model to her peers.” Photo Caption: Paije receives her award from outgoing Chairman Cllr Paul Witton

Paije has supported many charities by organising various dance events and a sponsored walk, she has also donated some of her wages from her part time job. Paije is a Senior Prefect in Year 11 at Cannock Chase High School and demonstrates an extremely caring nature towards other students of all ages and abilities. This includes supporting others with revision and helping

Horses put on their dancing shoes for Wild West Hoedown Boots and Stetson hats were the order of the day when Cannock Chase Trekking Centre, near Penkridge, staged their first ever evening event.

“I think the horses enjoyed that as much as we did,” said Miss Gregory. “They got very excited! “The whole evening was a great success and I think we will have to start planning a new musical ride to do it all over again later in the summer.” Photographs credit of Firefoot Photography.

The centre turned on the ranch style for a Wild West hoedown with dancing to the band BringBackSummer. Even the horses had their dancing shoes on with owner Lisa Gregory and seven of her staff showing their skills with a musical ride to the voice of country star Shania Twain. Their encore was a display of high speed barrel racing, a popular sport in rodeo. 52 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2019

Welcome to Perfectly Polished Nails by Laura… After completing a comprehensive nail technician’s course during 2012, I worked in salons at weekends enhancing my knowledge and skills, whilst having regular sessions looking after friends and family nails. I then operated mobile for several years on evenings and weekends, gaining valuable experience, and always keeping up to date with the latest trends and techniques. Earlier this year following additional training, the self-belief and confidence in my own ability was where I wanted it to be. Therefore, I was now ready to listen to what people had been encouraging me to do for quite some time, and Perfectly Polished was born.

In addition to my business being salon based, I am now able to invite clients to my home for appointments in Norton Canes, where I have a room set up solely for this purpose.

Clients will often sit down and say ‘surprise me’ or B A Y R ‘please do whatever you L A U like’ or they’ll look at my current set (which I also do myself) and ask for something like them. Others will come in with an idea, or have seen pictures of a set they like, or will come to me for inspiration with a colour scheme in mind. So, if you’re looking at something special for that big girl’s night out, office party, date night or simply your everyday nails, then look no further. I pride myself in using top quality products, genuine Swarovski crystals, and most of all I feel so fortunate to be doing something that I love for a living, and listening to the feedback I get from my clients is a great feeling. My social media pages have many examples of my work, and showcase a wide range of styles and techniques, so please feel free to visit or like and follow at the below links.

Do you, or perhaps a friend or relative wear dentures? Do you carry a spare and how do you know when your dentures are worn? Dentures may not be a natural part of your body but they are an important part of you. Just think how many essential functions they have, allowing you to smile, eat and speak! Yet they are probably one of the least likely items that you will actually speak about to anyone but your closest friends. Our job at Smilecrafters Denture Clinic is to make you feel comfortable and relaxed to ask any Denture related questions you may have. In the last issue, we talked about what to do if your dentures become loose and the modern treatments that are available to help you. Ranging from relining the dentures with new plastic to improve their fit through to new dentures held in place by dental implants. This time as we are in holiday season we are going to discuss some of the sensible precautions for denture wearers on their travels. We will also briefly look at some of the tell-tale signs when dentures are worn and ready for replacement. This is the time of year when many people look forward to a break or holiday, perhaps overseas or even closer to home. Regardless of which, it is a time when you may eat different foods or perhaps even participate in adventurous activities that you would never dream of at home. For that reason, it is always sensible to pack a spare denture in your suitcase. In fact, to encourage you to travel prepared Smilecrafters offer a full range of protective denture boxes and even lower cost ‘spare dentures’ for patients having new dentures. Prior to travel, it may be worth getting your denture checked over and professionally cleaned before you leave. Stubborn stains can be removed, improving the feel and appearance of your denture. Whilst any small cracks can be identified and repaired before they have 10

a chance to develop into full fractures. Something very simple that can really make a beneficial difference if you are going away or even attending a special occasion. It also provides the opportunity to assess the wear of the dentures. When dentures are worn, they often no longer meet evenly as you bite together which can make them less stable and feel loose. A tell-tale sign of this is the chewing surfaces of the back teeth on the dentures becoming very smooth and rounded. Other signs can include the front denture teeth becoming chipped as the back teeth no longer meet properly. Also, if a denture repeatedly fractures this may well be related to wear. The process of wear is gradual and patients are often surprised how long they have actually had their dentures for when they give the matter some thought. There is no set time for how long a set of dentures will last as there are many influencing factors. This includes diet, how they are looked after and the type of material that they are constructed from. So, if you have any denture questions why not book a FREE 20 minute initial consultation. Smilecrafters is a private denture clinic and dental laboratory in Burntwood offering a full range of denture services. CARVERS WOLVERHAMPTON

Half Marathon Events

The Carvers Wolverhampton Half Marathon Events are set to take place on SUNDAY 1st SEPTEMBER this year. The organisers are pleased to announce an additional sponsor and a change of events for our existing sponsors. Within the event programme there is the Carvers Half Marathon and The Banks’s 10K. The Cycle and Wheelchair Event which has both a 20k and 10k distance is sponsored by Estate Agents Berriman Eaton and The Children’s Mini Marathon is now sponsored by The Grand Theatre.

If anyone would like to help with any of the jobs, marshalling or water stations please make it known through the enquiry website www.info@ carverwolverhamptonhalfmarathonevents.co.uk. The charities we are supporting this year are Compton Care, PDSA Wolverhampton, Wolves East District Scouts Bilston and Wulfrun Hospital Radio. You can enter any of the events online or download the entry form and enter at Carvers in Littles Lane.

This year the organising committee decided to include a Half Marathon Relay into the programme. It is hoped to encourage more people out to participate, who may not be able to complete the half marathon distance. Teams of four people can enter, each running approx. 3K. Paycare have kindly sponsored the relay this year. The organisers are busy behind the scenes, working with The City of Wolverhampton Council and Traffic Management to ensure that the courses are ready for the 1st September. There are some new volunteers this year who will help with signage around the course and running up to race weekend doing final checks before the competitors take to the streets.

Four Seasons: Creating a Home From Home Growing old, needing help to care for ourselves and keeping our independence are concerns we’ll all face at some point in our lives. For many, this can mean moving home to find that level of care and support. At Tudor and Windsor House, we know that moving home is an emotional and challenging time at any age, even more so in later life. Our ‘Home to Home Promise’ helps makes this transition as easy and comforting as possible. Before a resident moves in, we get to know what and who are important to them and their needs. Their favourite foods, activities, hobbies they wish to continue and new things they want to try. So their care is focussed on them from the moment they arrive. Our homes are situated in the communities our residents grew up in. They run activities ensuring residents stay young at heart, keeping in touch with the community they have always been a part of.

Jacky Reed, Managing Director said: “Understanding our residents’ needs is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that quality care is about more than supporting a person’s physical needs but knowing and making sure a person is enjoying experiences that are special to them. “Our Quality of Life Programme allows us to log and act almost immediately upon every comment from residents, relatives, carers and professional visitors about the experience and care we provide. It’s all linked to our quality assurance programme giving you peace of mind.” Visit www.fshc.co.uk for more information.

ESTABLISHED CLINICAL THERAPIST It is estimated that 1 in 6 adults in the last week have experienced a common mental health problem. Mixed anxiety and depression accounts for one fifth of sick days in the UK. And what cannot be measured, is the emotional impact on the individual plus their family and friends. The range of support is increasing but still massively under resourced. In 2017, the Government produced a green paper highlighting the importance of tackling mental health in the UK. Recognising that from an early age, people suffer needlessly, without realising that support is available. Many schools and universities recognise mental health challenges and encourage parents to identify this in their child’s development. Sue Starr is often recommended by local schools to parents whose children struggle with mental health.

relationships with local schools, GP’s and Dental Practices and seen a real shift in positivity towards the use of talking therapies”. She adds “we work with our clients to provide the therapy they need; be that hypnotherapy, NLP or CBT. Whichever is best suited to how the client would like to proceed and whichever gets the best outcome”. Sue has experience with a vast range of personal challenges and symptoms that people have been struggling with, sometimes for years. Her youngest client was 6 and oldest 84 showing that talking therapies really can be of benefit to anyone. www.suestarr-hypnotherapy.co.uk www.teenageemotionalstresstherapy.co.uk

The NHS uses a range of talking therapies including hypnotherapy, CBT and others. But the resource is very limited, waiting times are weeks and quality of support varied. Sue Starr has been an established therapist since 2012 and has consistently worked with clients of all ages, backgrounds and conditions. Sue says “we have strengthened our

DETECTING OSTEOPOROSIS REDUCES RISK New state-of- the-art bone density scanning facilities at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital can quickly and easily detect early signs of osteoporosis, which can make people susceptible to broken bones. More than three million people in the UK already have fragile bones from osteoporosis. A DEXA scan to measure bone density is fast, simple and completely painless and the whole procedure takes less than 20 minutes. Knowing that you have the condition means you can take steps to avoid fractures and conserve bone health. Osteoporosis, osteopenia, brittle bone disease or osteomalacia are conditions where the bones are essentially weakened and are therefore more likely to break as the result of a minor fall. Whilst there are no outward symptoms, often the first sign of osteoporosis is when a fracture occurs and this is most frequently in the hip, spine or wrist. Denser bones are less likely to fracture easily. Bone tissue naturally declines from the age of 35, which merits the importance of maintaining good bone health. Specialist Radiographer Annisa Mulla explains about the risks and what can be done for a more bone-friendly lifestyle , “Both genders and all ages are at risk, although older and post-menopausal women over age 50 are at a particular risk. Currently, every minute in the UK someone has a broken bone caused by osteoporosis and one in five women who have broken a bone, will break three or more before being diagnosed. To combat the reduction in bone density as you age, be active every day with activities such as brisk walking or cycling for 30 minutes at least five times a week,

eat a healthy, balanced diet, get some sunlight, don’t smoke and reduce the amount of alcohol you consume. The private Nuffield Health hospital in Tettenhall is fortunate in having both a highly trained, specialist team and the latest DEXA scanning technology to diagnose or assess the risk of metabolic bone disease, which includes osteoporosis. The amount of radiation used is so low that the radiographer can remain in the scanning room with the patient. If you are over 50 and have one just one of the many risk factors, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital has a self-referral route for a bone density DEXA scan but talking to your GP is a good first step. SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT Iron Man June 2019 Once again Cannock Soroptimists volunteered, both as bag packers and as race marshals, at the annual Staffordshire Ironman 70.3 race. Two days before the event, June Bould, Trish Mellor and Jackie Prince spent a day bag packing; they worked hard to ensure that all 2,500 competitors and those who marshal on the day of the event had everything they needed. They learned a lot about the hard work and complex planning that goes on behind the scenes to prepare for an international event of this scale. Early on Sunday 9th June, 4 other members of Cannock Soroptimists: Val Jones, Jill Gooch, Dawn Pope and Olivia Lyons were in position near to Chasewater to marshal the first part of the bike ride section of the race. Competitors had already completed the 1.2 mile swim when they began the 56 mile bike ride on their way to Shugborough where they then ran a half marathon! A lovely sunny morning ensured the race started on time. Soroptimist marshals were in awe of Lucy Charles-Barclay who swam the 1.2 mile in 15 degree water temperature with fastest overall swim. She continued her lead in the cycle section matching the speed of the promen; and was the fastest women’s runner, becoming overall women’s winner. All of the marshals thought it was a great experience being part of such an event, directing the riders and cheering them on. The competitors were so appreciative of the job all of the volunteer marshals do, shouting out 60

their thanks and often sharing a joke about the day and the weather. Ironman donates monies to charities in lieu of the help given by volunteers. Donations to the club this year will help towards SI Cannock’s President Trish Smith’s charity this year which is Staffordshire Women’s Aid. Ford Ka+ Active

SUV MAKEOVER

My first impressions of this car are dead wrong and I’m not embarrassed to admit it. When this Ford Ka+ first came trundling up my driveway I saw it as yet another city car that thinks it’s an SUV. And – as I see it at least – this sort of identity crisis is at the root of what’s wrong with current car trends. Everyone, it seems, now wants to drive at a height which allows them to see over hedgerows and out into the great blue yonder – even if they want to spend just over £13,000 on a city car. Up until recently I’ve never understood this fully, but the Ka+ has taught me a thing or two. Firstly: the ride. It rides beautifully, thanks no doubt to the ‘Rough Road’ suspension set-up, which makes it one of the best in its segment (‘city car crossover’ is what I suppose its segment is). A very high percentage of potholes are forbidden from intruding upon driving enjoyment

62

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY 2019

and this is all down to the Ka+’s “SUV-ness”. A regular city car won’t give you this. Nor will it give you room to wear a very large hat when onboard. Get it out on the open road and you’ll find it to be a willing companion, even on motorways – it may be unashamedly built for urban centres (there’s no all-wheel drive, no lowrange box – but then you’d be pretty stupid to think there would be) yet it’s a relatively competent cruiser (engine noise is surprisingly muted). There’s some body roll in corners but mostly you’ll find the Ka+ skips through every everyday challenge, its skinny tyres making it agile like a mountain goat. I’ve really enjoyed driving the Ka+ and I’m beginning to see its charms, even the rubberised floor mats make me smile – presumably the logic is that “active” people buy Active vehicles and lead ‘active’ lives, while wearing wellies and walking dogs, so who wants to clean carpet? And that brings me to my next point, it’s really practical too. Yes, a lot of what you see is garnish – Active trim brings with it a lot of styling aids to help you differentiate it: body cladding on the wheel

arches, silver roof rails, 15” alloys and a unique grille design – but this vehicle is taller, wider and longer than normal. It has a near-classleading boot space (270 litres or “as big as a Fiesta’s”), loads of leg room for rear passengers, enormous amounts of storage and two USB ports. Adding to this is Ford’s very useable SYNC 3 infotainment system, which comes with Apple CarPlay and Android as standard, plus cruise control and air-con. The steering is well-weighted, providing feel and confidence and the five-speed manual gearbox has a shift that’s rewarding to use. And you really will have to use it if you go for this 85bhp 1.2 petrol variant. There’s a decent amount of torque, but there’s more pleasure to be had from putting the plucky three-cylinder through the wringer in every gear. Do that and you’ll still see entirely reasonable fuel economy numbers around 40 mpg. I realise now that there’s been sound logic behind giving a fun, affordable small car an SUV makeover all along. I just had to drive the new Ka+ in order to see it.

Ford Fiesta ST

LESS IS MORE

‘Less is more’ is a popular idiom these days. And it’s a phrase well suited to Ford’s third generation ST. Where other manufacturers endlessly add, Ford has taken away. This time its fastest supermini is down a cylinder and without the five doors of many of its ‘hot’ rivals. It now has only a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol motor instead of its predecessor’s 1.6 and it’s lighter as well. But it’s outside quantifiable data where this car shines. As ever, when evaluating cars on paper, data deceives. Empirical research is key, so I’ll get on with the business of trying to put you in the driving seat – the heated, Alacantara and leather Recaro driving seat, which is for my portly bodyshape, too figure-hugging. The ST is so much fun to drive that once you hit a sinuous B-road you’ll forget you need to hit the gym. Get all three cylinders firing, with the turbo on song, and this engine puts out a punchy 197bhp, which keeps performance very much the order of the day. Equally though when you want to settle into a languid cruise it answers your every wish: cylinder deactivation technology kicks in to run just two cylinders to save fuel (less again!) and Ford has made ride comfort a priority as well. Hearing this may be a shock

to your system, but bear with me, it’s all about “shocks.” Clever damping is provided by frequency-selective shocks which switch between softer and firmer settings depending on the profile of the bump they respond to. Of course, what makes this car so much fun in the first place is that there will be bumps – you just won’t care about them. The ST is so wieldy and easy to position, its performance so useable – now more than ever before because of a broader band of peak torque from the all-new, all-aluminium 197bhp, 214lb ft (236lb on ‘overboost’) engine – that you’ll still be able to wrap the ST around any and every bend you care to throw it at with an unerring sense of heroic driving skill: yes, it still rewards you in singularly, smile-widening fashion. Piped into the well-appointed and stylish cabin is a muscular soundtrack courtesy of a “Sound Symposer”. These systems can be hit or miss but this is a good one and, frankly, it has to be because a three-cylinder engine in an ST is traditionally absurd. Attaching it to a lowly eco-box from much further down the range is OK, but on a performance-orientated £20k thrill-seeker that has a ‘Track’ mode? But the ST makes a really good fist of it, with attendant pops and cracks from the sports exhaust delivering the sound effects with real panache.

Standard is a six-speed manual gearbox, which has a short, snappy change that’s great to use. ESP can all be turned off if you so wish but I rarely mess about with such features, figuring few people will be bothered to do so either. Much more important for some of you will be how pleasantly tactile the dash is; how good the visibility is; how intuitivelylocated the driving position is; how surprisingly quiet it is on a motorway and how economical the 40.2mpg I averaged really is on a car that’s almost shockingly quick: 0-60mph is over in 6.5 seconds, if you’re using launch control (from the optional Performance Pack). Of equal import is that you have to jump to top-spec, ST-3 specification to get a car that features sat-nav. Entry-level cars get a 6.5” touchscreen infotainment system (which features sharp graphics, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, DAB radio and Bluetooth) and mid-level vehicles up to ST-3 get an 8.0” screen. However, by now you should all be familiar with the Fiesta’s mass-market appeal, it is, after all, the number one best-selling car in the UK, every year. And now, thanks to this new ST version, the best just got even better. Drive this and you really will get more for less.
