Do you Dream

of retiring?

I meet many clients, some new, some longstanding and apart from the few that live to work and never see themselves not working, the vast majority would love to be in a position to finish work and enjoy life. How do you know when you have enough money to retire? Most people, whilst they are working, are far too busy to work out how much money they need to live on and more importantly what they want to do with their lives. I have in the last week had two clients suffer adversity; one client who was 71 years of age and still working sadly passed away (he had been telling me for the last 6 years he was going to retire) and another who retired in December aged 60 has suffered a major stroke. Life is so short and I am constantly reminded of this which makes my

job so fulfilling when I can make a difference to someone’s life. A great example of this is another one of my clients who has just called to see me to review his finances. Keith first came to see me back in 2010 when he was 58 years old. At the time he was in remission from prostate cancer and wanted to ensure his retirement benefits were protected.

personal contribution of £12,000 meaning a grand total of £501,527 was paid into his pension. When considering transfers we also compare the benefits being given up with what it would cost to purchase an annuity on the open market as this then gives us an investment yield that needs to be achieved in order to match the benefits.

We carried out a full review and in total Keith had 4 pensions all with different providers although his main pension was a preserved final salary pension with Hansons.

In this case the yield required was 9.96% - way above what we would consider achievable. However, when looking at the benefits payable while in the scheme, on Keith’s death there was no spouse’s benefit which in effect meant the scheme died with him.

The pension he was entitled to on his 65th birthday was just in excess of £17,000 per annum and the transfer value was £219,000. In addition to this his other pensions gave him a total transfer value of £489,527. In 2015 Keith made a

Now throughout his working career Keith has always been in a senior managerial role and his wife who has supported him throughout means she is totally reliant upon Keith’s pension. If he were to die first she could not

I would like to share with you the journey he has been on.

afford to support herself without inheriting some form of pension.

– let’s hope that continues next year in the Premiership!

After careful consideration we transferred all his pension benefits into a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) which gave him control and peace of mind that should he die his wife will receive 100% of his pension benefits tax free.

For anyone with preserved final salary pension benefits: we are holding seminars throughout the year all over the Midlands if you are interested in attending. If you would like to attend just visit our website www.midlandifa.co.uk where you can find further details.

The reason I am telling you this is because when Keith came in to see me this morning he had finally set a retirement date of 22nd June this year and no-one is happier than me. Did he make the right decision transferring back in 2010? Keith thinks so as his pension is now worth £770,900 giving him an annualised return of 7.3% which, although less than what was required to purchase an annuity, Keith has no intention of doing that as he would prefer to control what benefits he takes and when he takes them. The other advantage he has is that he does not require all of his tax free cash so he has the flexibility to take what he wants when he needs it thus giving him freedom to spend his savings which are on deposit attracting very little interest, knowing that cash is accessible as and when required. This summer Keith will now spend his time with his 4 year old grandson giving him memories that will last a lifetime. It does also give him more time to follow his passion which is going to all the Wolves matches both home and away, which this year has been very enjoyable and successful

CANNOCK FRIENDS OF ST GILES LORD DIGBY JONES Lord Digby Jones was the speaker at a fundraising event for St Giles Hospice organised by the group Cannock Friends of St Giles. It was held at The George Hotel in Lichfield and was a huge success in every way! Lord Jones’ words were eagerly awaited by everyone supporting the event and no one was in any way disappointed. Lord Digby is a man passionate about his country and passionate about business and that came through very clearly as he took everyone with him on a journey that reflected his own childhood and education and through his working life as a lawyer. He also described his involvement with many and varied businesses in this country leading to both his position as DirectorGeneral of the Confederation of British Industry, the UK’s ‘Voice of Business’ and to Minister for Trade in Gordon Brown’s Government, a position he held whilst being affiliated to no political party. He now sits as a non-aligned cross bench peer in the House of Lords. He has long supported the Hospice movement, holding a ‘soft spot’ for St Giles, the Hospice which allowed a good friend of his to spend his last days in peace and dignity. He works hard to raise funds to enable them to continue the work they do.

His audience listened with rapt attention: they laughed, reflected, considered, applauded and cheered his honest and warm views, commenting on his wonderful common sense. The evening was, of course, to raise funds and it certainly did that. There were super prizes donated for the raffle and everyone was very generous in their participation. Digby had brought along his latest book ‘Fixing Business: making profitable business work for the good of all’ which he sold and signed, all of the monies raised were donated to Cannock Friends of St Giles - another example of this man’s generosity. All of this, together with some very generous donations resulted in over £3,600 being raised for the Hospicean absolutely magnificent sum which will help the Hospice continue to provide its wonderful services to our community.

During his talk, Lord Digby stressed the importance of business within our society as the wealth provider which enables education, healthcare, social services, policing to provide everything that we need to exist as a safe, civilised society. His inspiring talk emphasised his belief in socially inclusive wealth creation and he encouraged all businesses to be proud of the central role they play in our society. He is saddened that in Britain we do not proclaim our successes, even though, amongst many other things, we have the most productive car plant in the World and produce 50% of the components of every Airbus that takes to the skies: these and many other facts about Businesses in Britain are sadly little known. Digby spoke of Leadership, being an element he feels is lacking in Britain right now. He outlined the many facets of good leadership, amongst other things a good leader should lead by example, be more interested in the development and success of those around them than in themselves.

Staffordshire Outlook Raising Money for French Bulldog Saviours On Sunday 3rd June 2018 Sharon Caldwell (Staffordshire Outlook Director) and Sister Michelle Caldwell will be taking part in their first triathlon, for their chosen charity French Bulldog Saviours (FBS). For the past few years Sharon & Michelle have pushed their limits and completed a full marathon and Tough Mudder, and for both events they have raised money for charities. This year’s event is their biggest challenge to date. The UK Ultimate 1/4 Triathlon which consists of a 0.6 mile swim, 28 mile cycle and 6.5 mile run.

as the charity is absolutely brilliant. Some of the rescues they have been involved in have been heart-breaking, but without such a great charity I dread to think what would have happened to the poor Frenchie’s. This is our biggest challenge and we are training hard now, which is tough, as we have never been on a road bike so it is proving a lot harder than we thought. We just keep reminding ourselves that this will be a massive achievement and we will be raising money for such a good cause.”

Sharon & Michelle have their own Frenchie Frankie, who is very spoilt and very cute! They have chosen this charity as they are both so passionate about FBS and everything they do to rescue French Bulldogs. Sharon says “We are both hoping to raise as much money as we can for FBS,

From hand, elbow & shoulder surgery through to hip & knee replacement surgery. Depending on your individual needs, you can select the consultant of your choice and the date for treatment. Why wait for your condition to get worse when you can see a specialist right away? The hospital assists the local community through the NHS work it carries out and by providing private healthcare with no waiting lists for those with insurance or who decide to pay for themselves. If you would like to find out more about Hip and Knee or Hand and Shoulder treatment options, throughout June consultants at the private hospital in Tettenhall are hosting free events that anyone is welcome to attend. Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Eric Isbister, who practices at the private hospital in Wolverhampton, specialises in hip and knee surgery explains that undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery is now much more comfortable and the stay in hospital is much shorter. “With newer enhanced recovery techniques, patients are up and walking on the same day as they have their surgery. Gone are the days that joint replacement was a really painful process. Work in Cannock Chase Recognised by Natural England Cannock Chase Council’s Countryside Services are celebrating after winning the first ever Natural England West Midlands Region Conservation Award. The award recognises the outstanding achievements in wildlife conservation; the service was commended for its outstanding work in achieving sustainable grazing and traditional hay making in an urban environment, along with successful land management for the endangered willow tit and rare insects plus much more.

they not only make a difference to the local environment but they also have a positive effect on enhancing the habitats for our wildlife. I am delighted that the team has received this award as recognition for all their hard work.” Natural England is the government advisor for the natural environment who are charged with helping to protect England’s nature and landscape for people to enjoy and the services they provide.

The Countryside Service for Cannock Chase Council is based at Deavalls Farm in Hawks Green and consists of just five members of staff. The team manage approximately 240 hectares of land within the District including Hednesford Hills, Mill Green and Hazelslade Nature Reserve, along with the award winning ancient monument at Castle Ring. On Wednesday 11th April members from the Rotary Club of Cannock and their guest were entertained by Joan Lockley from West Midlands Hedgehog Rescue Joan gave an informative and humorous talk about her work in saving hedgehogs’ which unfortunately are disappearing from our countryside at an alarming rate. She outlined the difficulties that face the hedgehog population and how everyone can help to make your own garden more hedgehog friendly. Joan also told members that over the last 12months she along with her team of volunteers rescued over 600 hedgehogs into their self-funded and purpose built ‘Hedgehog Hosprickal’ on the border of Staffordshire and the West Midlands. Many of these are babies called hoglets which need to be constantly observed and hand fed every two hours throughout the summer months until they are big enough to hibernate, clearly Joan does not get much sleep. If anyone sees a hedgehog in daylight it’s a sign that they are in distress and in need of help. She advised that if at all possible the hedgehog should be placed in a warm box and kept warm. You must never give a hedgehog milk as the

Attenshun!! Why you should insist on a retired Royal

Marines Commando to clean your carpets. Your home is your castle. You should keep it clean and safe by only allowing over your threshold, a tradesman that you can trust & has a background to be proud of. It is common knowledge that the Royal Marines, proud wearers of the coveted Green Berets, are a force to be reckoned with which means the days of dirty carpets and upholstery are numbered. The Commando ethos, held close to every Commando’s heart are; courage, determination, unselfishness, cheerfulness in the face of adversity. This means that you can call Zero Dry Time safe in the knowledge that the job will be done well, cost effectively and with the minimum of fuss. ‘I am rightly proud of my military background and I put to work the Commando ethos.’ said Ian 55 years from Barlaston near Stone.

Before

After

‘My work is second to none, and each time I take a job on, I’ll not leave until it can’t get any cleaner. ‘Continues Ian. ‘I am acutely aware of the notion of being in someone’s home and treat it accordingly. I focus on the job in hand until it is completed. My results are constant and exceptional with no drying time, it is walk dry almost immediately.’ Insists Ian So let the draw bridge down and call a carpet cleaner you can trust. Wasp Facts by The Pest Control Man

THE WASP & PEST

Wasps can sting over and over again. The sting of a wasp should wear off within 24

I Won’t sting you for price!

hours but for a small minority of people the venom in their sting causes anaphylactic shock which can be fatal.

Adult wasps mainly feed on nectar, but the majority of their time is taken up by foraging for food for their carnivorous young, mostly insects or spiders. This can be great for our gardens as they eat the garden pests.

CONTROL MAN

FAST RESPONSE 7 DAYS A WEEK

Wasps make nests from paper. They chew up strips of bark and spit it out again to form a rough paper. Some wasps make nests in basements, sheds or dark, cool places. A queen starts a new colony each spring. She raises a few worker wasps first to make the nest larger and bring food. Then she starts laying eggs. A colony can grow to 50,000 wasps in one summer. In the winter all the wasps die except for a few new queens. The new queens spend the winter in an old log or burrow. In the spring, they make new colonies. If you need any treatment against wasps in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196. Wasp removal is just £40.00. We do not charge any extra for weekends or evenings.

Gardening A Flavour of Geums The name Geum comes from ancient Greek meaning to “add flavour”; and even today they are still invaluable for adding colour to our spring and early summer borders. There are low growing ones that spread to form a mat of leaves and there are taller ones creating an arching leafed clump about 1ft / 30cm tall. All prefer a moisture retentive soil and the low growing ones can stand quite wet soils. They will tolerate dry conditions, but they will flag in the hot, dry conditions. Geums will set seed and some wild types can become a nuisance in damp gardens. On the whole the cultivated varieties are less plentiful of seed and seedlings. Their ability to cross and set seed means there is always the chance of spotting a good new form in your garden if you grow plenty of different types, but this also means that some won’t come true from seed.

These plants tend to have flowers that are small nodding bells on short stems in spring and sometimes again in autumn. “Barbra Lawton” is an improved form of the wild plant with far more of the peachy-pink nodding flowers. “Lemon Drops” is a very pale yellow which popped up as a chance seedling in Beth Chatto’s famous garden. “Snowflake” has large, pure white flowers. “Farmer John Cross” has primrose yellow flowers that are sometimes semidouble. Geum coccineum has upward-facing orange flowers and will stand drier soils. For the best show choose “Eos” which has bright yellow leaves in spring to set off the flowers. The best hybrids share this tendency for upward or outward facing flowers creating a more dramatic show, not to disparage the delicate beauty of the nodding types. “Abendsonne” has orange-yellow flowers, “Hannays” is a bit taller and has soft orange flowers. The well-known “Bell Bank” is silky pink. Of the new varieties coming along the Cocktail Series has some intoxicating colours. “Mai Tai” is pale peach and largeflowered, “Cosmopolitan” is a slightly deeper shade, “Tequila Sunrise” is red and yellow and “Banana Daquiri” is a lovely pale yellow. If promptly dead headed these Geums will bloom again later in the season, provided they have not been left too dry through the summer. I hope this has given you a flavour of the variety of geums available and a taste for these lovely flowers in your garden. Martin Blow

I have selected some of my favourite new and old varieties for you. I’ll start with the border types and the best loved is the semidouble scarlet flowered “Mrs. J. Bradshaw” who grows to about 1ft tall with longer arching flower stems. The apricot yellow “Lady Stratheden” is almost as famous, as is the orange “Dolly North”. This type flowers in late spring through to mid-summer and sometime beyond and the flowers are large and showy for a Geum. I find this type can tend to die out after 2 or 3 years unless divided after flowering and replanted as single rosettes. The low growing varieties are mainly descendants of the native water avens, Geum rivale, and ideally these want a moist soil, but they seem to do fine in my dry sandy soil.

This month we have teamed up with The Pet Show and five lucky winners will win a pair of tickets. The Pet Show, the UK’s largest indoor & outdoor multipet event returns to the Stafford County Showground on the 18th-19th August 2018! The Pet Show brings together all creatures great and small, and showcases the very best that the UK’s pet industry has to offer. Split into dedicated animal zones, each one teeming with experts, meet and greet areas, live demonstrations, exciting displays and trade stands brimming with goodies for pets. Whether a pet owner, pet professional or pet enthusiast, there’s something for everyone. The show is also dog friendly, so if you have a canine pal – bring them along! The show is broken down into seven different animal zones; The Kennels, The Cattery, The Hutch & Run, The Aviary, The Vivarium, The Aquarium and Animal Discovery. Each zone is full of adorable animals to meet and interactive features for the whole family. There will be the chance to meet and greet micro pigs, alpacas, miniature Shetland ponies, parrots, chinchillas, guinea pigs, tarantulas, pythons and so much more! Don’t forget that each zone also features trade stands from the best of British brands where you can find food, treats, toys and housing for your pets. The Pet Show 2018 will also see the return of one of the most popular features from previous years; The Dog Breed Village. This area lets you meet a huge range of different breeds from the massive Irish Wolfhound all the way down to the tiny Chinese Crested, and plenty in between! This is a great way to get to know a certain breed before adding one to your family, and each stand is manned by experts who will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. More of a cat lover? The Pet Show 2018 is extremely proud to present the LondonCats International Cat Show, in association with TICA. The cat show will present many different cat breeds, from household favourites such as the British Shorthair to more exotic breeds such as the Lykoi (better known as the Werewolf cat). There will also be the chance to quiz the experts and meet the gorgeous felines taking part in the show. The Pet Show 2018 also features two huge arenas with an ongoing set of timetabled displays throughout the weekend. Visitors will have the chance to see sheep, goat and duck racing, ‘dancing’ miniature ponies, exciting scurry races and even discover what it takes to look after a 30 stone giant tortoise! Additionally, the show offers horse-drawn carriage rides around the main arena – this is a great way to watch all the action in style. The extremely popular dog agility display will also be returning for 2018, showcasing their impressive training and tricks. What’s more, there will even be the chance to enter your own canine pal in our Fun Dog Show. Visitors and their dogs can compete for the title of ‘Best Crossbreed’, ‘Best Pedigree’, ‘Best Rescue Story’ and even the ‘Waggiest Tail’. There really is something for everyone at The Pet Show 2018; make sure you don’t miss out on this great day out for the British public and their pets! 3 Hammers Bar & Bistro by Geoff Hall

Golf is a game that’s taken very seriously. Worldwide, players of all ages and abilities lovingly nurture their God given talent hoping they’ll one day make the perfect round; come in under par… beat their friends. I’m no different. For me, this Saturday is like so many others that have gone before it: up at the crack of dawn, eager to sneak in a crafty few holes before I begin my weekend routine. I leave the course vaguely satisfied – as anyone who has turned in yet another below par effort ever can be – but heavy with frustration; I could have performed better. If anything I’m keen to go straight back out there. It’s an itch every player feels and usually fails to scratch. Next Saturday, it seems, can never come soon enough. Happily however this Saturday I’m in luck because tonight I’m going

to 3 Hammers Golf Complex on the outskirts of Coven to check out the Bar & Bistro I’ve been hearing so much about. But don’t worry: you don’t need to be golfmad or even a member of the club in order to eat here – tonight I’m definitely going without golf clubs, with my partner Gisella. 3 Hammers Bar & Bistro is an independent restaurant situated at the heart of the award-winning golf complex. It is now under new management and is led by owner Shaun Timmins – an experienced food industry veteran who for

the last few years has worked at Miller & Carter Steakhouse in Penn – and Restaurant Manager Astrid Walker, who’s been working here for five years. We arrive and are greeted warmly by Astrid who asks us if we’d like drinks first. Of course we take her up on the offer. We sit in the vibrant bar area. I’m pleased to see some proper Real Ale up for grabs (not a guarantee in a lot of restaurants!) and go for a pint of Holden’s Golden Glow: a refreshing golden ale brewed using the finest English malts and choicest hops. The label on the pump reads ‘Black Country Born and Brewed’ – no wonder it appeals to me. Gisella drinks Bacardi and Coke. Not my cup of tea, but each to their own. A new menu has just been launched at the restaurant and it caters well for everyone – even vegetarians. It’s a very family-friendly and welcoming atmosphere, which can be enjoyed whether you’re a golfer or not. Looking at a lot of tonight’s crowd I’d say that the majority are among the latter. We reach the restaurant and find a superb conservatory and outdoor eating area and breathe in a mouth-watering aroma of freshly cooked traditional food.

3 Hammers Bar & Bistro sources all of its meat and chicken from a Wolverhampton-based butcher. Ahh, that explains a lot: you just can’t beat buying local. We both opt for steaks next. I order a ‘12oz rib-eye’ (£16.95) to be cooked ‘medium’ and Gisella plumps for an ‘8oz sirloin’ (£13.95), to be cooked ‘well done.’ Both steaks are tender, flavoursome and cooked to perfection. A fine advert for what can be achieved with solid raw ingredients and a flash of culinary flair from the 3 Hammers’ ace kitchen team. The tried and tested complement of grilled flat mushrooms, tomato, onion rings, salad and upgraded (£1) sweet potato fries sets things off delightfully. We choose a bottle of Malbec to further enhance the occasion. During our meal both Astrid and waitress Natalie visit to check if everything is going to plan. I resist the temptation to answer with “you’ll find out when I turn in my review” for fear of being labelled a bit silly. The service tonight is entirely excellent, we never feel rushed in between courses or wait too long. We’re too full to have a dessert each but fall victim to Natalie’s recommendation of ‘Lemony Delight’ (£5.45) – a light, refreshing note on which to end. We resolve to come back very soon – if not for the ever-popular non-carvery Sunday lunch (£9.95), and 33% off your food bill offer every Sunday & Monday night after 5pm.

The place is buzzing with diners: a mixture of large groups, families, and couples all contribute to a pleasant ambience. I order ‘Chicken and Chorizo Skewers with roasted pepper and smoky tomato dressing’ (£6.45) to start. Gisella goes for ‘Buffalo Chicken Wings glazed in BBQ sauce, served with blue cheese dip’ (£5.95). Neither are large enough to detract from the mains but ample unto themselves. The tomato dressing is sumptuous, lavishing a layer of exceptional flavour on to an already spicy dish. Gisella enjoys her choice very much. Both of us remark upon the quality of the poultry – definitely a cut above. It turns out that

Compton launches bold new strategy to address fear and revolutionise palliative care services • Compton Care is one of the first in the UK to remove ‘hospice’ from its name – challenging fear and misconceptions surrounding its services • Organisation is breaking down early care access barriers for patients and loved ones • Plans include a £2.5m investment in a Care Coordination Centre Wolverhampton-based care provider Compton Care, formerly known as Compton Hospice, launched a new strategy and identity on Wednesday 11th April aimed at revolutionising the way in which people with complex and incurable conditions are cared for, after research found that people are fearful of accessing its services. The charity carried out patient, staff and supporter and sector research which 50

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2018

found that a large number of people associate the word ‘hospice’ with being ‘a place you go to die’. In turn, this negative perception has contributed to people often becoming fearful of accessing care from Compton, as well as healthcare professionals making referrals only in the final weeks or days of a person’s life. Moving forward as Compton Care, the organisation’s new strategy, which includes a multi-million-pound investment in better coordination of patient care, will aim to ensure the care it provides is accessible to people much earlier and for longer. The move will bolster Compton’s service delivery at its sites and in the community for patients and their loved ones across Wolverhampton, the Black Country, Staffordshire and Shropshire. Claire Marshall, Chief Executive of Compton Care, said: “Our new clinical strategy and brand marks an exciting step for Compton – one that continues to put the patient at the heart of care delivery. Our research with patients,

families and supporters highlighted key challenges surrounding access to hospice care – namely fear about who we are and what being referred to us means. “We’re on a mission to remove this fear and break down barriers to service access to ensure more patients get referred to us earlier, so we can treat them sooner and help them live better lives.” The new strategy, which includes a £2.5m investment into its Care Coordination Centre – supported by £1.5m of funding from ex-Goodyear workers, is focused on ensuring that patients are referred into its care earlier on, allowing for better complex condition management and improved quality of life. Compton will achieve this by better integrating its own services, while adopting a partnership approach with the healthcare economy

and third sector to ensure that the patient is always at the centre of delivery. In-line with the new strategy Compton is also revealing its new name as Compton Care – a new identity to reflect its changing approach and future direction. It is one of the UK’s first to remove ‘hospice’ completely from its identity, with the aim of removing fear, challenging misconceptions and ensuring more patients and their relatives get the care needed to live better lives, earlier on.

Compton, launched more than 35 years ago, has supported almost 16,000 patients since 2000 alone. For more information visit comptoncare.org.uk

One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see OCEAN COLOUR SCENE at Wolverhampton Racecourse racing on Friday 31st August 2018! Ocean Colour Scene are back this Summer for an action packed day out performing at Wolverhampton – Racecourse on Friday 31st August after the racing. Why don’t you pop along for a day at the races before dancing into the evening with the fabulous Ocean Colour Scene in concert for an action packed day out! This is a gig not to be missed. In this 23-year existence, Ocean Colour Scene have notched up nine albums, three of which went Top 5 – 1996’s Moseley Shoals, 1997’s Marchin’ Already and 1999’s One From The Modern – and a run of nine successive Top 20 hit singles commencing with 1996’s The Riverboat Song. THE CHASE CACI CLINIC THE SUN IS HERE – PROTECT YOUR SKIN! We are now in June; the sun is upon us (we hope) - now is the time to take extra care of your skin! The sun’s rays make us feel and look well, but it’s not all good news. We often associate a glowing complexion with good health, but skin colour obtained from being in the sun, or in a tanning booth, actually accelerates the effects of ageing. Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of ageing. Skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching. Whilst sun damage to the skin may not be apparent when you’re young, it will definitely show in later life. Please take care or your skin now – it is far easier than trying to repair the damage later! The use of a good quality sunscreen is essential (we recommend the Tropic SPF 50) but you also need the take special care of your skin when it comes to keeping it hydrated. Our CACI Hydratone (and Super Hydratone) facial is ideal to help keep your skin hydrated.

Two of the other ‘Crystal Clear’ treatments on offer are:

THE 10 MINUTE GLOW

This amazing peel off mask leaves your skin radiant in just 10 minutes flat! Using active ingredients that tackle problem zones and deeply cleanse, whilst hydrating skin and minimising pores – leaving you glowing and revived. Use to target problem areas or just to give your skin a fast, invigorating boost. The science behind this product includes such key ingredients as (deep breath): Nordihydroguaiaretic(NDGA). This is a potent antioxidant that has recently been identified as being effective in dealing with acne.

THE REWIND 10

Crystal Clear Rewind10 Super Sonic Neck firm and Lift Duo is an anti-ageing neck moisturiser with sonic applicator designed specifically to lift, firm and restore the neck and décolletage area. The system uses clinical level, high-grade active ingredients to target the dramatic effects ageing can have on your neck area. The moisturiser works tirelessly with the sonic vibrations to deeply penetrate the skin. The Sonic Neck Wand takes sonic energy to lift and firm the skin, making a real impact on your neck and décolletage. Sonic vibrations help the moisturiser penetrate the skin leaving it feeling lifted, firm and toned. Skin is visibly younger looking, smoother and plumped. Every month we have a range of special offers to introduce new clients to what we can do with our CACI machines, other superb equipment and top of the range products and say ‘thank you’ to our many regular clients for their support.

The ‘Crystal Clear’ Oxygen treatments, as the name suggests, use Oxygen which provides life and energy to every living cell. When oxygen levels become low the immune system is weakened. The ageing process is associated with a drop in available oxygen in the skin cells. Oxygen helps rebuild the skin, smoothes lines and wrinkles and increases skin firmness. It is ideal for damaged skin; providing an energising and healing effect to the skin cells This is especially true for acne prone skin due to the anti-bacterial effects of oxygen. The deep penetration of active skin care ingredients into the skin layers is enhanced by the use of oxygen thereby plumping and smoothing lines and wrinkles. The treatments are also very beneficial when it comes to replacing lost moisture

SI Cannock & District PERIOD POVERTY Cannock Soroptimists have become aware of a growing problem in this country - families who cannot afford to buy sanitary wear needed each month. A survey found that more than 137,700 girls have missed school in the last year because they couldn’t afford sanitary products. 6 per cent of parents admit they have been so desperate to equip their daughters with sanitary protection they have resorted to stealing on the occasions they couldn’t afford to buy them, whilst more than a fifth of parents said they had gone without something themselves so they had enough money to meet their daughter’s needs. Women’s Aid is aware of the issue as are food banks throughout the country. Many food banks distribute sanitary products and there are some specialist distribution centres already set up. Cannock Soroptimists made an initial collection of products to give to Staffordshire Women’s Aid to be donated to women in the Cannock area who use their outreach services and are unable to afford the monthly protection they need. They are looking into ways of setting up collection and distribution on a more regular basis. Obviously this needs more help than a local collection can provide and so SI Cannock and District has set up a petition on the Government Petitions page. 10,000 signatures will elicit a response from Government, 100,000 will bring a debate in Parliament. Cannock Soroptimists ask everyone who reads this, if they agree that the issue needs to be addressed, to please sign the petition and then to send it on to all of their family, friends and colleagues

Avon Business & Leisure 50th Anniversary Fete to Support Dog A.I.D. As part of their 50th anniversary celebrations, Avon Business and Leisure Ltd will be holding a fete on Saturday 23 June 2018 in Cannock. The event will be opened by Bev Bevan founder member of Electric Light Orchestra and all proceeds will go to Dog A.I.D., who this year celebrate their 25th anniversary. Taking place on site at the Avon Business & Leisure Centre, the family event opens at 11am and will feature a range of stalls, demonstrations, food and drink plus much more.

asking them to sign. That in itself will raise the issue throughout the country. The petition can be accessed on either the Government petition site or on the petitions page of the SIGBI site: www.sigbi.org. The formal wording of the petition is as follows: Cannock & District Soroptimists are asking the government to provide free sanitary products to young women receiving free school meals. Recent media reports have highlighted issues relating to what is being described as period poverty. 137,700 UK girls miss school each year in addition to putting their health at risk trying to manage without these essential items. Cannock Soroptimists believe funding is needed to end period poverty. Please sign and share our petition. Petition: Provide free sanitary products to young women receiving free school meals Cannock Soroptimist activities can be followed on their website: www.sigbi.org/cannock-and-district, on their face book page: www.facebook.com/SICannock or on twitter @ sicannock

Dog A.I.D. is this year celebrating its 25th anniversary and there are currently 74 fully qualified dogs throughout the country. Training takes from 18 months to two years with both dog and owner receiving specialist education from a network of trainers. Once trained, the new Assistance Dogs will be able to support their owner to live a more independent life. Assisting with a variety of tasks from emptying the washing machine and finding the telephone, to turning the lights on. These dogs are often their owners’ lifeline, supporting them emotionally as well as physically and helping them join in with in their local community. Admission costs £1 per adult and children get in free. There are stalls available to hire at a cost of £25 for charities and £35 for non-charities. For further information please contact 01543 503163/468507 or visit www.avonbusinessleisure.co.uk For further information about fundraising, volunteering or supporting Dog A.I.D. please visit www.dogaid.org.uk.

One of the event organisers is Anita Castellina from Lancashire, who has been a trustee at Avon Business & Leisure for 30 years. She has recently received a British Empire Medal from Lord Shuttleworth for outstanding service and will be off to Buckingham Palace in the summer. Four years ago her Assistance Dog George was awarded an OBE from the PDSA, the first Dog A.I.D. trainee to receive such an accolade. Anita comments, “It feels strange for me to receive an award for doing something I have loved for 30 years. It means I got to choose who we supported with the fete, so it was obvious for me to pick Dog A.I.D. who helped me train my Assistance Dog George. He does so much for me as a wheelchair user, including picking up dropped items, opening doors and fetching help in an emergency.”

Sue Starr

ESTABLISHED CLINICAL THERAPIST With a background in corporate coaching and development; Sue Starr has been an established clinical therapist for nearly 6 years and has seen many clients with a range of different issues. Developing strong links with GP’s and schools, Sue has experience with a vast range of personal challenges and symptoms that people have been struggling with, sometimes for years. As an example, a recent report in the Daily Express demonstrated how for one client, hypnotherapy helped for their sugar addiction. The report quotes the NHS as advising “Hypnosis is widely promoted as a treatment for various long-term conditions and for breaking certain habits”and continues “hypnosis does seem to have an effect, though scientists disagree about how it works”.

cases of my clients. It helps them know they are not alone in their feelings and that there are ways to help make positive change”. Through her work with schools, Sue has built a range of tools and techniques specifically to support younger clients from age 6 upwards. These techniques along with a natural affinity, connection and passion for supporting young people, has meant many parents now go to Sue to help improve the welfare of their children. www.suestarr-hypnotherapy.co.uk www.teenageemotionalstresstherapy.co.uk

The range of success stories cannot be denied, Sue adds “testimonials I have received demonstrate that through commitment from the client, genuine life enhancing changes can take place”. Many people believe they are alone in how they feel and behave in certain situations and that there is no help for them. Sue adds “whilst individual circumstances may vary, there is more commonality than differences in many of the

Wolgarston High school We are the champions On Monday 30th April Wolgarston High School held the final round of the Stafford District Cup on its state of the art 3G facilities. The final round was played as a round robin tournament rather than just a semi-final/ final. This layout enabled all of the teams taking part to play more games giving them more experience on the pitch. Wolgarston, Walton High (Stafford), King Edward VI High (Stafford) and Alleynes High School (Stone) all took part in the final round. Wolgarston’s Team have been together for three years now. Last year the girls won the District Cup last year too, so it is an amazing achievement for them to win the title again this year. “I was really pleased with the attitude of the girls involved, after we went 1-0 down in the final game the team could have easily given up but they didn’t and we won 2-1,” said Mrs Sally Stanton (Head of PE), “I am so proud of the girls, they have shown us all how you can achieve anything when we work together.” Wolgarston High School’s Year 11 boys football team have won the District Cup for the third successive year thanks to a hard fought 3.0 victory over Blessed William Howard (Stafford). This result means that the Wolgarston team have been unbeaten in this competition for the entire duration of time

they have been at Wolgarston. This is an achievement we are not sure has ever been done before. The first half was very tight with neither team being able to create lots of clear cut chances. The sides went in level 0.0 at half time. Wolgarston started the second half brighter and it was Wolgarston who broke the deadlock 0.0 score, thanks to a Sam Athrell goal from an Ethan Woodman corner. Blessed William Howard then had a good chance saved by Sam Edmunds. Shortly after Alex Farmer doubled our lead thanks to a well taken goal from close range. Alex Wingfield wrapped up the victory for the team with a fine strike from the edge of the area. “The entire Year 11 squad has represented the school to a fantastic level and each team member has shown superb commitment to the team throughout their 3 years at Wolgarston,” said Mr Matt Skinner (House Leader of Pyrenees and Teacher of PE), “I am so proud of our team.”

St John’s Catholic Primary School, Great Haywood New Head joins the team Mrs Marie Therese Cornes has joined St John’s Catholic Primary School in Great Haywood, part of the Holy Trinity Catholic Multi Academy Company (HTCMAC), as the new Headteacher. Formerly serving 5 years as both Deputy Headteacher and Class 6 teacher at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, Marie Therese is also a staff representative on the Board of Directors for HTCMAC, where she is instrumental in helping to set the strategic objectives for all eight member schools within the multi-academy company. Marie began her career in education as a parent helper in 1992, progressing to a teaching assistant and welfare officer at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary in 1993. In 2007 she gained fully qualified teacher status and joined St Joseph’s Primary teaching team. Joining education via this route has meant that she has experienced all angles of working in primary education, giving her a wealth of varied experience to draw upon. Also joining Marie is Mrs Jo Shaw who takes up her role as Office Manager and who shares Marie’s vision for the future of St John’s Primary School. Having already given the main school reception area a makeover during the Easter break to create a more welcoming atmosphere, Marie is also currently developing 58

a new school website and working on building strong relationships with the parents, Parish and the local community. “I believe that the home / school partnership is what matters most to a school’s success. I want parents to feel that I am here for them as much as the children and want to encourage good two-way communication. I hope to develop a strong and supportive school family within which all our children thrive and meet their full potential.” commented Marie Therese.

White House Guardianships (WHG)

FAMILY-RUN COMPANY LOOKS AFTER INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FOR PAST 25 YEARS White House Guardianships (WHG) is a familyrun company based in Bournemouth with subsidiary offices throughout the UK that for 25 years has been caring for international students aged 7-18 studying at schools across the UK. We offer a range of programmes that allow students to attend a choice of schools with tailored guardianship services to give international students a chance to experience life and education in the UK. Last year, WHG was guardian to students from 44 different countries who stayed for varying lengths of time, from one week to full academic years. We are accredited by AEGIS (The Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students). Host families form a large part of the guardianship service we offer our students. A spokesperson said: ‘A big part of a student’s experience is living with a British host family’. We are constantly recruiting families who would like to host our international students to offer them a home away from home. The majority of our students across Staffordshire are in

boarding schools and require host families for exeat week ends and half terms in October, February and May. Together with our partners abroad, we prepare students for their stay in the UK thus ensuring a happy experience and a long-lasting friendship between families and students. Our Local guardians are the student’s guardian while they are in the UK, they are responsible for their welfare and safety. They recruit host families in their area and give support where needed. They organise the placement of students into host families and are the main contact for the local schools, students and host families. Host families are required to complete an online application with information about their family, home and pets and photographs. This forms an electronic host family profile that can be sent to students and their parents to see before a student stays with the family. We would be delighted to hear from you if you would like to know more about becoming a WHG host family and welcoming our students in to your home. Huntington Kickboxing Club Kickboxers’ Slick Move! Local Huntington Kickboxing Club, as a result of increased membership, have moved to better and larger premises at Image Business Park, Hednesford. The Club is run on a not-for-profit basis by a group of dedicated volunteers under the leadership of Shaun Preece, a veteran World Kickboxing title holder and Hall of Fame Kickboxing recipient. The re-location and much of the refurbishment has been undertaken by parents and friends of the youngsters who belong to the Club and has been helped by a grant of £500.00 received from Staffordshire County Councillors Phil Hewitt and Bryan Jones through the Community Fund. They have both been very impressed that the Club provides opportunities for local communities, in particular that it offers school age children, adults and families a safe environment in which to train, gain confidence and maturity, learn life skills and maintain fitness, an important facet given the pressures of today’s lifestyle. Phil and Bryan visited the Club recently and both said they are delighted to be supporting a group that welcomes both sexes of all abilities and ages at such a fantastic venue. County Councillor Bryan Jones added “This is a very vibrant Kickboxing club and we all recognise that physical activity is vital to emotional well being, fitness and general health,

New Year, New Legs, New You

GREAT LOOKING LEGS FOR THE SUMMER If you have varicose veins and want great looking legs for the summer, now is the time to act. Having these assessed and treated has never been easier. The Vein Clinic, led by Mr Simon Hobbs, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, treats the vast majority of varicose veins as walk-in, walk-out procedures, under local anaesthetic, with greatly enhanced recovery compared to traditional surgical treatments. The clinic, situated in the Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital, uses the latest in medical technology to diagnose and treat the veins that are the underlying cause of unsightly and symptomatic varicose veins. Mr Hobbs is the only surgeon in the West Midlands currently offering the VenaSeal Closure system, alongside other popular treatments such as Radiofrequency ablation, enabling people to have their veins treated with minimal discomfort.

VenaSeal uses a medical grade super glue to seal off the damaged veins and as it involves fewer injections in the leg this treatment means that you can be quickly back to full activity enjoying the benefits of healthy feeling and great looking legs.

If veins are left untreated, they can lead to bleeding, eczema, phlebitis, brown skin discolouration and potentially leg ulcers, which take a long time to heal. During a consultation, an ultra sound scan will be performed to detect the source of the problem and from the size and position, indicate the required treatment.

Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves in the veins which causes blood to pool and result in painful and unsightly bulges at the skin’s surface. Symptoms include aching, itching, swelling, throbbing and restless legs at night, with both men and women being affected equally.

Recognised by all major Medical Insurers. For self-paying patients, the consultation fee is £150 and an ultrasound of both legs is £99. For further information visit www.simonhobbsveins.co.uk

Mini Magic

BY ROB TAYLOR

NEW TECHNOLOGY

First of all let’s take care of the elephant in the room: the Union Jack taillights. Love them or hate them, you’re going to notice them. Is the idea kitsch and inadvertently flagging up well-worn stereotypes about Germany’s sense of humour (or lack thereof) or instead is it another piece of Cool Britannia? Frankly, who cares? Especially about what French buyers will think. The new Mini is a car first and foremost. It has taillights that glow red because British law dictates it must. Whether they flash our national anthem via Morse code on the stroke of hour to the accompaniment of Big Ben-like tolling doesn’t interest me and neither should it you. Here’s what you really want to know about the 2018 Swindon stalwart: The mark III Mini Hatch and Hatch Convertible in three and five-door configurations have been given a mid-life upgrade. New technology, cutting-edge connectivity, standard-fit front and rear (!) LED lights across the range and a dual62

clutch automatic gearbox are just some of the standout features in the newly launched range.

price hike, which now sees the range start at just over £14,500 will do nothing to dull the brand.

The changes are focused on driver appeal and core new technologies, including MINI Connected Concierge services, wireless smartphone charging, as well as first-in-class options such as new anti-dazzle adaptive Matrix headlights that in effect allow drivers to use always high-beam without bothering other road users.

Again, apart from a new badge, three additional paint options, alloy wheel designs and exterior upgrades everything is quite evolutionary and not in the least bit revolutionary. Inside the car, a 6.5-inch touchscreen has been fitted as standard along with USB and Bluetooth connectivity and a multifunction steering wheel. This touchscreen comes with MINI Navigation with Apple Car Play and MINI Connected Services with Real Time Traffic Information. A wireless smartphone charger also makes an appearance and there is an extended range of leather trim, new interior backlit surfaces and colour lines. Select the new interior style ‘Piano Black’ cabin and buyers can have an illuminated Union Jack on the passenger-side dashboard, too.

Available also is some astonishing personalisation options. As part of the extensive Mini Yours customisation service, buyers can have individual parts inside and out, showing their favourite designs or even their name. But consider the residuals, youngsters (and, believe me, it will be young people who will enjoy this novelty most): go for this and you’ll only ever be able to sell your car on to a British bloke called ‘Barry’. Very little has changed mechanically and I can see why: because there really is no pressing need. The range seems already capable of selling itself so clearly now with added trinkets, this facelift will only improve upon the Mini appeal and cars will still be flying out of showrooms nationwide. Even an incremental

For me it’s all getting a bit too personal at Mini these days. The range boasts outstanding class and peerless brand snobbery and the raft of new changes will undoubtedly only serve to reaffirm it as the premium small car to own. But, to paraphrase Basil Fawlty: don’t mention the taillights. I mentioned them once but I think I got away with it.

Trendy Twingo

BY ROB TAYLOR

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

Forget all you know about the outgoing model because the new Renault Twingo is a breath of fresh air, a fantastically clever piece of packaging for the city car segment. It’s been dazzling drivers in its class for some time now. Unlike its many rivals, the new Twingo is only available as a fivedoor hatchback, with its engine located under the boot floor, driving the rear wheels.

Curiously that’s about the price of the diametrically opposed entry level Mini One, a car which is today about as far from what it used to be as possible.

Reminiscent of the original 1960s Mini in its cleverness (the groundbreaking use of a transverse engine was solely so you could get four adults and some luggage into the tiniest footprint possible), the Twingo does exactly what it says on the tin: it makes mincemeat of urban motoring maladies.

Outside, there’s a fabric folding sunroof, exclusive 16-inch alloy wheels, crosshatched ‘Iconic’ side decals and electrically folding door mirrors. In terms of tech there’s Renault’s intuitive R-LINK satellite navigation, climate control, automatic headlights and wipers, electric heated mirrors, DAB radio, Bluetooth, and cruise control.

And now Renault has launched the ‘Iconic Special Edition’ with new interior and exterior upgrades. Capturing the zeitgeist for trendy young things looking to roll into the tightest shopping mall parking spots with maximum aplomb, this chic and cosmopolitan variant is positioned at the top of the range, at a premium price: £14,595.

The Twingo I have here boasts a hugely efficient TCe 90 turbocharged petrol engine with a silky manual, but you can get it with a clever EDC (efficient dualclutch) automatic transmission. However, this fabulous little unit offers low CO2 emissions of 99g/km and returns up to

The ‘Iconic’ receives £2,825 of extra equipment above the ‘Dynamique Nav’ spec, providing buyers with a saving of £740. It comes in Mint Green, Diamond Black or Crystal White to set it apart from the rest of the range. Helping with this also is the exclusive crosshatch-patterned part-leather upholstery, floor mats with a Mint Green Twingo motif and other colourful hints around the cabin.

65.7mpg on the official combined cycle, although due to its feisty character, I rarely saw above 50mpg. 0-62mph comes up in a very respectable 10.8 seconds, and goes some way to explain the former statistic: fruity engine equals punishment at the pumps. Putting aside all the “special-ness” for a second though, for me this car is all about the multi-awardwinning concept: its rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout means that interior space is maximised and it is embarrassingly easy to park. Pop a U-turn and watch the jaws of your mates’ drop. Inside, the car is stylish as hell: every button is tactile, well-made and easy to fathom and, as with all new Renault models, this Twingo is covered by Renault4+ – a four-year warranty that offers unlimited-mileage cover in the first two years and then two further years of protection up to 100,000 miles. It also includes four years of comprehensive Renault Assistance. European cover is also included for the first three years. And that makes a lot of sense because the Twingo is very European in its design ethos and execution. It’s stylish, funky, practical and very French – in all the best ways.
