OVERCHARGE YOU!
I have recently been introduced to a new client who was looking for advice regarding his final salary pension.
4
who has worked for a bank all their adult life could be expected to know if the company he had his mortgage with is providing him with a competitive rate however, I was staggered to find that for the last few years he has been paying a standard variable rate of 5.49%.
Part of our advice process is “getting to know our client” and to do this we complete an in depth financial fact-find to ensure we know exactly where we are starting from and more importantly where we want to go.
When I questioned this rate, he was under the impression that he was in a fixed rate deal and would suffer redemption penalties if he moved, however, on reviewing the annual mortgage statement, it was indeed a variable rate with no tie-ins.
This particular client has been employed by one of the major banks for almost 40 years and is looking to retire early next year. Now you may think that someone
To put this into perspective the interest he was paying each month on a £134,500 mortgage was £615.34 per month or £7,384 per annum.
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH 2018
One of his main concerns is that when he retires he needs to repay the mortgage debt, however, the maximum tax free cash sum from his final salary scheme he would receive is £111,831 which would leave him with a shortfall. He has no other savings that he can use towards the shortfall. His options regarding his pension are to take a full pension of £24,230 p.a. which he feels he could survive on or, take the tax free cash together with a reduced pension of £16,777 p.a. which he feels he would struggle to live comfortably on as this income has got to support himself and his wife. We then discussed his options with one of them being to transfer
his pension benefits from the Final Salary Pension Scheme to a Personal Pension. The transfer value being offered by the bank is £762,766 however, if this route is taken, all guarantees are lost and he would be dependent on future investment returns. This decision is not one to be taken lightly and indeed it is financially the biggest decision he will ever make in his life – does he opt for a guarantee or take control and responsibility of his retirement fund. We then looked at what was important and the financial needs that would come into play if the pension was transferred. The following points were of significance: If transferred the pension fund of £762,766 would give a tax free cash facility of £190,691 which is more than enough to clear the outstanding mortgage balance and he would have money to spare. When he dies the full value of any residual pension fund is inherited by his wife or his children if she died first. If it passed to his wife then on her death it would pass to the children. If death occurred before his 75th birthday the whole pension pot is paid out tax free which would certainly become a family legacy. If transferred he would have the ability to take a greater income until the state pension kicks in on his 66th birthday. On this occasion the client felt that transferring would be perfect for him and as long as he is sensible and follows advice then I certainly agree. This then bought me on to the subject of his mortgage. He could take the tax free cash now and repay the outstanding balance or he could consider remortgaging to a 5 year fixed rate mortgage, a current deal available is 1.89%, leave the monies invested and then
review and in all likelihood repay in 5 years’ time. The benefit of this is that, provided the investment growth achieved is in excess of 1.89% net of charges, the amount of tax free cash available would be greater. This does bring me back to where I started because the interest payable for the year is only £2,542 or £211.84 per month. Compare this to what he is currently paying and the saving is over £5,000 a year in interest. Fortunately, we were in a position to save him this money but how many people out there are paying ridiculously high rates of interest to line the pockets of their bank or building society? The lesson here is regularly review your finances and make sure you have an Independent Financial Adviser check that what you have is appropriate for you.

Tettenhall College NEW BUS ROUTES FROM STAFFORDSHIRE!
Tettenhall College is a non-selective independent, day and boarding school for 2-18 year olds situated in the picturesque village of Tettenhall on the outskirts of Wolverhampton. It provides an exceptional pupil centred learning environment for boys and girls with both day pupils and boarders mixing in an inclusive, vibrant community. The emphasis is on an education that develops the whole person both in and beyond the classroom with exceptional extra-curricular opportunities that complement a rigorous academic environment. From September 2018 the School is launching a new bus service into Staffordshire offering an express route from key pick up points making the School much more accessible to pupils in the County. Life skills and preparation for life beyond school are important elements of the educational offering here and this permeates from Nursery through to Sixth Form. It is especially apparent in the new 6th Form Centre with dedicated facilities for independent study and recreation to support older pupils in the transition to higher education and employment. Academically, results are consistently high, especially for a non-selective school where there are children of all abilities. In 2017, over two thirds of sixth form pupils achieved top grades of A*, A or B while 50 per cent of the Year 11 pupils achieved 9 or more GCSE A* to C grades; 27% per cent of all grades were at the top level of A*or A. Pupils achieve beyond expectations both in the Preparatory School and the Senior School, and they leave as well-rounded, confident young adults ready to face the challenges ahead. Many continue their education at top universities including Oxbridge, Bath and Warwick as well as gaining places at specialised institutions such as RADA or prestigious industrial placements with successful businesses. The School runs an extensive extended day programme which challenges and stretches pupils in a wide range of opportunities thus giving them as broad and varied an education as possible. The wide variety of options and sports – from rock climbing to engineering, business enterprise to dance – ensures 6

that everyone will find their niche and grow in confidence. You can’t help but feel the buzz around the College when you visit as development plans come to fruition. New multi-purpose sports pitches, squash courts and study facilities as well as refurbished boarding houses; there’s a great deal going on here and the children are clearly genuinely very happy and enjoy being part of this growing community. The School has come a long way since its foundation over 150 years ago by local industrialists originally with 15 boys and a cow (to supply the boys with milk). Yet the traditional values and the wonderful historic setting remain the same. This is a secure and happy environment and pupils and staff are clearly proud of their School, there is a warm welcome for visitors and their confidence not only in themselves but in what they offer is infectious. The School is welcoming prospective parents and pupils to its open morning for all year groups on 7th March 2018. Wolverhampton Marathon Events Call Print who sponsor the Walk in the park: Angel Springs for providing all the bottled water to keep the competitors hydrated whilst they take part; Greggs the Bakers who supplied the goody bags for the competitors. The atmosphere at the start and in the park was enhanced by Dicky Dodd and his team from Signal 107. We feel that this event also helps to strengthen community spirit within the City of Wolverhampton. The marathon events are all about encouraging activity for all ages and abilities and it was encouraging to see so many setting off in their different events.
On Monday 4th December the organisers of the 20th Carver Wolverhampton Marathon events joined together with the Mayor, Mayoress, sponsors and charity recipients for the finale of the events, the presentation of cheques to the chosen Charities.
This was another opportunity to thank all the sponsors and supporters, especially Carvers Building Supplies who as always give their full backing not only financially but also with staff volunteering their help on the event weekend. Banks’s who sponsor the Banks’s 10K: Cousins furniture who sponsor the Cousins 20K cycle event: NJB sports & Physio for their continued sponsorship and assistance with all injury and issues arising from taking part:
The organisers have listened to feedback and looked at competitor trends and have decided to remove the Marathon from the event list. Half Marathon and 10K are more popular distances and it is hoped to promote them even more. Also cycling is so popular now it was thought appropriate to concentrate resources into the 10K and 20K cycling events. Next year the date has been set for SUNDAY 2nd September 2018.
ÂŁ16,000 was shared between Compton Hospice, Sunnyside Kennels Coven, Wolverhampton Samaritans and The Mayoral Charity Fund. Chair Mary Harding reflected; it seems an age away when on September 3rd over 2000 people took to the streets of Wolverhampton, running and cycling in their chosen event and all helping to raise money for charity.

CHANCE TO MEET COSMETIC SURGEON
GUY STERNE JOINED THE TEAM AT NUFFIELD HEALTH Consultant plastic and cosmetic surgeon Mr Guy Sterne joined the team at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital recently to increase the provision of the full range of cosmetic services. He will be providing a free advisory evening at the hospital in mid March. A native of the Midlands, he qualified from Birmingham Medical School in 1988 and went on to undertake his specialist training in plastic surgery. This included two years of research for which he was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine and a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons. After 15 years with the NHS, Mr Sterne gave up his NHS work to focus purely on the private sector. Choosing cosmetic surgery as a career appealed very much to Mr Sterne’s eye for detail, he says, “Being a perfectionist, I enjoy the finesse required for plastic and cosmetic surgery. I like to take time to establish what exactly my patient is looking for and to present a realistic idea of what can be achieved. I very much enjoy surgery and get enormous job satisfaction from a good job well done.” Mr Sterne is fully trained and highly experienced in all plastic and cosmetic procedures and attends regular national meetings to keep on top of the latest advances in surgical techniques. Whilst safety

FORMER GOODYEAR WORKERS’ DONATION
to Compton Hospice to total £1.5 million that they wanted to do a project with Compton Hospice because Compton is part of Wolverhampton and the Black Country’s community. Compton has supported our members, and their families, over the years. This donation is all about creating a proud living legacy, and there is no greater place to do that than with Compton Hospice. The people who have lost their jobs feel a great sense of pride that they are supporting their local community.” Reacting to the news Compton Hospice CEO Claire Marshall commented: “This news is absolutely breath-taking; £1.5 million is a phenomenal amount of money! This donation means that we get the Community Coordination Centre of our dreams. It means we are able to transform our services going forward, and it means putting patients and families at the heart of everything we do.

On Friday 15th December it was announced that a donation from former Goodyear workers to develop a state of the art Community Coordination Centre at Wolverhampton’s Compton Hospice, which aims to improve access to care for patients, will now total £1.5 million. Members of the Unite Union Goodyear branch visited Compton to make the announcement that the donation, funded by surplus 22 16 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH 2018
monies from the 5/344 Transport & General Workers Benevolent Fund, will now total £1.5 million. Chairman of the Unite Union Goodyear branch Cyril Barrett commented: “On behalf of the trustees and management committee of the 5/344 Transport and General Workers Union I am extremely proud to say we will be putting £1.5 million into Compton Hospice Community Coordination Centre project. “The project has created such a positive response and a real sense of pride from the workers and so we want to make sure that this project is up and running and that all costs are covered. Mr Barrett added: “The members of the Transport & General Workers Union were very clear
“What’s even more wonderful for me is that this donation has come from local people who are part of our community and who have been supporting Compton for decades. This project means that they are leaving a fantastic legacy and that they will continue to support their community for many more decades to come. It’s very exciting for all of us here and we can’t quite believe it. It is the best gift we could have received for Christmas.” The Compton Community Coordination Centre project will see the creation of a brand new building from which the hospice will coordinate referrals to its extensive range of services including inpatient care, care in the home, day care facilities and emotional spiritual and social care. With all services being coordinated from one central point the centre will create a single point of access making it easier for patients, families, carers and healthcare professionals to access support from Compton Hospice. The announcement follows news that planning permission for the Coordination Centre has been granted with work due to commence in 2018. wolverhampton west magazine

SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT CELEBRATE BURNS NIGHT President of SI Cannock, Val Jones, is proud of her Scottish heritage and invited members and friends to celebrate this with her at a Burns Night, celebrated all over the world, showing the on-going influence of Rabbie Burns. The evening was well attended with everyone making a particular effort to support Val by wearing something tartan – whether clothing, a sash or a ribbon; some even managed to locate white heather or the purple thistle! The tables were decorated with tartan ribbons to continue the celebration. President Val performed the Selkirk Grace and the “Address To The Haggis’ in true Scots style before everyone enjoyed a meal which included the choice of haggis, Scottish beef or Scottish salmon followed by traditional Scottish desserts, all prepared and served wonderfully by staff at the Barns Hotel. After the meal President Val ensured that everyone could toast the Queen with ‘a wee dram o’ whisky’; she then invited Soroptimist Trish Mellor to read one of Rabbie Burns’ most famous poems “A Red, Red Rose”, a very romantic poem written by Burns in 1794, just two years before his death, one that epitomized how much he loved women and loved “being in love.”
President Val then gave a short presentation on ‘A Woman’s view of Rabbie Burns’ in which she focused on Rabbie the man and his complex relationship with women. Despite his many lovers he has been viewed by some as one of the early feminists in that he promoted the rights and intrinsic worth of women in his poetry and generally in society as he became an influential poet. He died when only 37 – in that short life he had 13 children: 9 of them with his wife. President Val concluded the presentation with a scenario of what it might have been like if Rabbie Burns were alive today: probably not for him the boring position of Poet Laureate much more likely a Celebrity with lots of doting female fans!

Amanda Milling MP calls on residents to sign up for a free energy insulation offer. Amanda Milling, Member of Parliament for Cannock Chase, is encouraging residents to apply for free energy saving measures, with news that energy supplier, E.ON, is offering free cavity wall and loft insulation for homes across Britain. For a limited time, structurally eligible households across Britain can have free loft and cavity wall insulation installed for free by E.ON, regardless of whether E.ON is their current energy supplier. The insulation, which would usually cost around £775, is being offered to all homeowners, landlords or private tenants with their landlord's permission. A typical family home could save up to £285 per year on their heating bills by having such insulation. Michael Lewis, E.ON UK’s Chief Executive, said: “In recent years we’ve provided more than 1.2 million energy saving measures to homes across Britain, giving people the support they need to become more energy efficient and save money on their heating bills. We’ve offered free insulation to people on qualifying benefits for many years under government obligations and know this can be a crucial first step to making homes comfortable and cheaper to run. By opening up the offer up to everyone, no matter who supplies their energy or what their financial 26 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH 2018
circumstances are, we hope to benefit many more people. However, this offer won’t be available forever so we’d urge those interested to make contact now to avoid missing out.” Almost a third of all heat lost from the home escapes through the walls and a quarter through the roof in an uninsulated home. Amanda Milling MP said: “I have spoken many times in Parliament about the ways in which residents can bring down their energy bills, such as by switching energy supplier and the use of smart meters. Making sure your home is well insulated can have a significant difference on your heating bill, so I would encourage as many residents as possible to apply for this offer. This is a great opportunity to both save money on your heating bill and get the work carried out for free. I would also encourage anybody with elderly friends, neighbours and relatives to look into this free offer.”Anyone residents wanting to apply for E.ON’s free insulation offer can visit www.eoninstall.com or call E.ON on 0330 400 1083.

Competition One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see Heaven 17 and Lightning Seeds at Uttoxeter Racecourse on Saturday 19th May. VMS Live and Uttoxeter Racecourse are excited to announce an evening with Heaven 17 and Lightning Seeds, after the races for one night only taking place on Saturday 19th May! Heaven 17, please remember, were not even intended to be a group. In the beginning was the British Electric Foundation, or B.E.F., for short. Born out of the collapse of the original Human League, and the brainchild of Martyn Ware, that band’s leader, B.E.F. was less a record label, as a portfolio of future musical projects of which Heaven 17 would be just one. Ian Craig Marsh, co-founder of the Human League, would join Ware along with Glenn Gregory as lead vocalist the man who would have been the original Human League singer had he not been unavailable.
Following the success of their sold-out November & December – 2017 UK Tour, tickets will go quick! Lighting Seeds Ian Broudie originally emerged from the post punk Liverpool music scene of the late seventies, playing in the band “ Big in Japan” alongside fellow band members Bill Drummond (KLF), Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes To Hollywood), Budgie (The Slits/Souxie And The Banshees) and Jayne Casey (Pink Military). In 1996, Euro ‘96 was set to be the first major football tournament to be held in England since they had won the World Cup on home soil in 1966. The English Football Association asked Ian if he would write a song for the England team. He had the idea of collaborating with two comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, the hosts of popular TV show Fantasy Football. They then wrote and recorded the song 3 Lions ’96, which became a number one single on two occasions, selling over a million copies in the UK. Another version of the song, 3 Lions ’98, also topped the Chart two years later. Tickets for the Heaven 17 & Lightning Seeds – Uttoxeter Racecourse show taking place on Saturday 19th May also include a day at the races and are available from: Saturday 19th May 2018 UTTOXETER RACECOURSE Box Office No: 0844 249 1000 Website – http://www.vmstickets.co.uk/ Gates Open – 3.00pm / Last race – 8.35pm On Stage – 9.00pm (approx.) GUTTERPRO WEST MIDLANDS & SOUTH STAFFS
Owned and Operated by Jon Matthews WHEN DID YOU LAST HAVE YOUR GUTTERS CLEARED OUT?
Gutter health is an often-overlooked part of your home maintenance plan, but gutters perform an important function in protecting your home.
your guttering. The moss breaks down and provides a great medium for weeds & grass to germinate which will prevent water running freely to the drains.” GutterPRO are able to clear gutters from the ground using a powerful vacuum system and super-light carbon poles. Because of the length of the poles, GutterPRO can reach over your conservatory where it would be impossible to place a ladder safely. This means that not only is there less risk of falling off a ladder, there is less risk to your property too. Jon Matthews says “For your full peace of mind, we use a CCTV system that enables us to show you before and after photographs of the work we have completed for you. If your gutters are clear, then there is no call out charge. All our jobs are booked in for a timed appointment, so you know we are coming.”
AXA, the world leading insurance company, suggest that gutters require at least an internal inspection each year,
Recently, GutterPRO introduced a gutter washing service which removed black marks and dirt from uPVC gutters and fascia boards, giving homes a fresh new look and much improved kerbside appeal.
and clearing out if they are clogged up. Blocked gutters can lead to brick damage, wood rot and even damp on internal walls of your home.
Local GutterPRO expert Jon Matthews says “Contrary to popular belief, it’s moss not leaves are the major cause of gutter blockages. Competition WHAT’S NEW AT WEST MIDLAND SAFARI PARK IN 2018? Staff at West Midland Safari Park are preparing for their best year yet, as the attraction prepares to celebrate its 45th year. The busy schedule for 2018 includes celebrating the birthdays of animals born last year, an education partnership with art exhibit Worcester Stands Tall and the opening of their brand new prehistoric exhibit - Ice Age which is due to arrive in Spring. Continuing the journey from The Land of the Living Dinosaurs exhibit, the £1 million project will feature a huge volcano, ice cave and ferocious, life-sized animals, taking guests on an interactive exploration through time. Adventurers will be able to walk amongst a gigantic woolly mammoth, a fierce smilodon and an enormous paracatherium, to name just a few. As well as the brand new exhibit, the Park is also the official Education Partner for Worcester Stands Tall - a public art exhibition of decorated giraffe sculptures due to be dotted around the streets of Worcester during the summer of 2018. The event, facilitated by Wild In Art and brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice, will enable local schools and renowned artists to design and decorate the sculptures. Larger sculptures will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the hospice.
Celebrating their first birthdays, guests can see how much the gorgeous babies of 2017 have grown during the past year. Fennessy the Rothschild’s giraffe is now a staggering 10-feet-tall and is showing no signs of slowing down! Also on the Safari Drive-through is beautiful baby Fahari, the second southern white rhino born at the Park within two years. Full of confidence and charisma, the healthy youngsters have been a great success for the longevity of both species, whose numbers are dramatically dropping in the wild. West Midland Safari Park is open daily for its summer season from 10 February 2018. Standard admission charge is £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children aged 3-15 and £22.00 for concessions. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra.
Further information and tickets are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. You can find out more on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ WestMidSafari.
The Park has also teamed up with Award-winning studio Aardman for their prehistoric comedy movie, Early Man. Fans of the film will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of parts of the set used in the movie inside the ‘Early Man Secret Cave’, which will be at the Park until Easter.

New to Salon La Mink OLAPLEX, THE HAIR TREATMENT THAT EVERYONE IS CURRENTLY TALKING ABOUT! Kim Kardashian is paid a lot to endorse beauty products, so when she recommends something just because she genuinely loves it, you know it's bound to be good. "When your hair is really damaged, if you sleep in that, it really works. I notice a huge difference," she said of the product that's making the rounds in beauty circles, Olaplex.
This is where some of the confusion around the hair treatment comes in – the Olaplex hair treatment is not a cure-all for dry or damaged hair. But it is a scientifically-developed treatment that works on hair condition from within, as opposed to a conditioner that improves only the superficial condition of damaged tresses. Here at Salon La Mink when you purchase the Olaplex System 3 we will add a complimentary colour bomb. We will mix the colour you have chosen for your hair for you carry out at home, this will give your colour longevity.
SALON LA MINK HAVE A NEW STYLIST! Salon La Mink would like to introduce our new senior stylist Catherine Russell as part of the hairstyling team.
Olaplex was founded by Dean Christal, who teamed up with scientist Dr Craid Hawker and Dr Eric Pressly to cook up a new molecule that works from inside the hair strands to strengthen and repair damaged locks where the structure has broken down. It maximises the strength of hair by reconnecting broken disulphide sulphur bonds in the hair, which gives hair a thicker look and feels healthier and stronger. The hair bonds break when hair is coloured and subject to regular heat and chemical treatments. It allows you to rebuild the strength, structure and integrity of hair and it is compatible with all hair types.
Olaplex comes in three forms, as a liquid that gets applied professionally as part of an intense salon treatment, as a mixer for salon hair dyes, and as a take-home cream for use as a weekly mask. When added to a dye, it stops the colourant or bleach from causing any damage to your hair follicle, and applied as a treatment, it works to rebuild the bridges between disulphide bonds (when broken, they become brittle – hence thinning and split ends). 50

Patient travels to Wolverhampton from Jersey SUPERB SHOULDER SURGERY ENABLES RETURN TO STITCHING Dr Jill Campbell, a retired dentist from Jersey suffered shoulder trouble for the last 40 years, until she saw Mr Richard Dias at Nuffield Health, who repaired a cuff tear and impingement, returning her to full working order. An excellent result of surgery combined with physiotherapy. During her working life, with a family of four children and a career as a dentist, Dr Campbell just got by as she didn’t want to risk either of these passions. She says she thinks the shoulder problem was caused simply by the wear and tear of everyday activity as a dentist and a working mum. Now 75, she loves to stitch and do quilting at her home on the island of Jersey. When her shoulder suddenly worsened in December 2016, she knew that something would have to be done, especially as sleeping became increasingly difficult. Fortunately through her sister-in-law, a retired radiographer from Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital, she was put in touch with shoulder specialist Mr Richard Dias and chose to undergo surgery in June. Dr Campbell says, “My treatment was simply superb! I count myself lucky to have been able to find the right person for the job, who was recommended through a family contact. I have private healthcare and relatives in the area, so Nuffield in Wolverhampton was ideal for me.
SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT PURPLE TEARDROP CAMPAIGN As part of their ongoing work within the issue of Violence Against Women, Cannock Soroptimists have launched a project which is part of The Purple Teardrop Campaign, initiated and run by SI Poole. They have produced bookmarks highlighting behaviours which are – or are not – appropriate within a relationship. One side of the bookmark shows what demonstrates that the other person ‘Loves Me’ whilst the opposite side shows things which indicate the person ‘Loves Me Not’. The aim is for the bookmarks to be given to young people – teenagers – as part of a project or within the curriculum to enable them to consider how they should be treated and how they should treat others. Young people in particular can easily become targets for the unscrupulous who see their vulnerability as a means to exploit them. The intention of providing the bookmarks is to question what makes an appropriate relationship. The Loves Me/Loves Me Not bookmarks are a positive step in allowing people to assess the quality of new or developing relationships and provide warning signs to look for if they become the focus of special attention. Loves Me/Loves Me Not bookmarks have been distributed to many groups and schools in Cannock and the surrounding area, including to teachers, librarians, social

I was only in for a day but the hospital was perfect and the experience was very good indeed. I worked hard at my physiotherapy and I was careful not to overdo it with my shoulder until it was fully healed. I am an avid stitcher and now I have been discharged can really go for my needlework again!” Following the surgical repair to her rotator cuff and to treat impingement, Dr Campbell had physiotherapy back home in Jersey for five months. She had to wear a sling for six weeks and came back for three check-ups with Mr Dias at the Nuffield private hospital. Mr Dias is an orthopaedic trained upper limb and hand surgeon who specialises in shoulder, elbow and hand and wrist surgery in his private and NHS practice in Wolverhampton. We offer a complete jewellery restoration service for that item that has just been loved too much and is tired. For examples see before and after photographs on our gallery at www. djmbespokejewellery.co.uk I currently design and make jewellery for our retail jewellers Emporium 13, based in Sedgley, West Midlands. The shop has been established over 10 years and offers a diverse selection of jewellery not usually found on the high street.
We are a small independent jewellery design centre based in Cannock Staffordshire.
Contact me personally on 01543 328885 or email sales@djmbespokejewellery.co.uk for all your jewellery based questions I would be delighted to speak further with regards to any of our services.
I have worked in the Jewellery business for 18 years specialising in bespoke handmade designs providing that very personal approach from the outset by way of private consultation. This personal yet surprisingly affordable service enables the client’s involvement from concept to completion. I am proud to guarantee that every commission I make is a handmade, one off, unique design. We liaise with the client enabling them to translate their designs and thoughts and I can provide initial concept drawings where required. Over the years I have found that sentiment can often outweigh the intrinsic value of the specific piece of jewellery. In respect of this I regularly use clients old, or perhaps inherited unwearable pieces and remodel using original stones and precious metal in order to carry that sentiment through to something current, wearable and unique. A popular area with regards this service is the refashioning of inherited loved ones wedding bands and/or engagement ring which, I have found, regularly sit at the bottom of a drawer gathering dust. Clients are often surprised at the designs created from yesteryear pieces and are excited to discover that they could wear loved ones jewellery as a new exclusive designs. Clients are frequently surprised at the affordability of the service. As part of the design service photographs are taken before and during the melting process in order to provide provenance of use. However for extra reassurance, should you wish, we offer the option of you being present at the actual melt. In furtherance of this service it is intended that in the near future clients can actually become involved in the making of their piece. We provide a free inclusive care plan which includes three revisits to us over a period of 5 years during which your item will be checked for the setting of stones and re rhodium plated/polished where required. As this service extends to five years from the date of purchase it enables the item to remain looking ‘as new’.

SPRING WILL SOON BE UPON US. DOUBLE AWARD WINNING CLINIC We are now in March and Spring is fast approaching, the time is right to prepare our skin for spring and summer.
We all know that winter weather is not fun for skin. Cold weather and low humidity levels result in dry air, which then steals moisture away from the skin every second of every day. Central heating further robs the air of moisture, as do hot showers or baths and harsh cleansers. Your skin not only needs more moisture, but moisture immediately after you wash. Applying moisture to damp skin helps seal that dampness into the skin. Keep a bottle near the bath or shower. During the night, your skin is at its most receptive to the effects of good skincare, so make sure you load it with nourishment. We tend to drink less water in the winter because we turn to hot drinks like coffee and tea, but don’t forget that your skin needs hydration from the inside, out. A little warm water with lemon can be very refreshing and hydrating at the same time.
difference to the smoothness and resilience of the skin. We have promoted the benefits of regular exfoliation. This is something that, really, you should be doing all year round to give yourself a better chance of a clear, radiant skin. Exfoliation becomes even more important in the colder winter months. Whilst exfoliation won’t rid you of all your winter skin problems, it will certainly help skin absorb moisture and alleviate the negative effects of too many dead skin cells. Most people are aware of all these facts, to a greater or lesser extent, but perhaps not so aware of the wide range of treatments and products available to counteract the potential damage that may occur in the winter. Here at the Chase CACI Clinic we have a number of treatments and products that can help you look after your skin and keep it in tip – top condition all year round. The CACI Ultimate Special Occasion Facial is a perfect example of what we have to offer. It makes use of Microdermabrasion and a hydrating mask to prepare and nourish the skin. The CACI Ultimate Hand Treatment performs a similar task for the hands. We also stock a range of superb products that will both feed and protect your skin. These include the World renowned ‘Heaven’ products by Deborah Mitchell and the vegan friendly range of Tropic Skin Care products. Finally, a quote from one of our client after a CACI Ultimate Special Occasion Facial: ‘Just wanted to let you know my face felt and looked so good yesterday from the facial. What products did you use on my face? It hasn’t looked that good in years.’ Every month we have a range of special offers to introduce new clients to what we can do with our CACI machines, other superb equipment and top of the range products and say ‘thank you’ to our many regular clients for their support.
The skin is composed of three layers: epidermis (top), dermis (middle) and hypodermis (lower). The epidermis takes most of the direct forces of nature and benefits from being moisturised as a protective layer. However, the dermis also benefits from moisturising. We often forget to help the skin cast dead cells in the winter, particularly on our hands. Moisture can’t get in if there are too many dead cells. An exfoliating mask used on your face followed immediately with a moisturiser will truly make a 56

NEW YEAR, NEW LEGS, NEW YOU If you have varicose veins and want great looking legs for the summer, now is the time to act. Having these assessed and treated has never been easier. The Vein Clinic, led by Mr Simon Hobbs, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, treats the vast majority of varicose veins as walk-in, walk-out procedures, under local anaesthetic, with greatly enhanced recovery compared to traditional surgical treatments. The clinic, situated in the Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital, uses the latest in medical technology to diagnose and treat the veins that are the underlying cause of unsightly and symptomatic varicose veins. Mr Hobbs is the only surgeon in the West Midlands currently offering the VenaSeal Closure system, alongside other popular treatments such as Radiofrequency ablation, enabling people to have their veins treated with minimal discomfort.
VenaSeal uses a medical grade super glue to seal off the damaged veins and as it involves fewer injections in the leg this treatment means that you can be quickly back to full activity enjoying the benefits of healthy feeling and great looking legs.
If veins are left untreated, they can lead to bleeding, eczema, phlebitis, brown skin discolouration and potentially leg ulcers, which take a long time to heal. During a consultation, an ultra sound scan will be performed to detect the source of the problem and from the size and position, indicate the required treatment.
Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves in the veins which causes blood to pool and result in painful and unsightly bulges at the skin’s surface. Symptoms include aching, itching, swelling, throbbing and restless legs at night, with both men and women being affected equally.
Recognised by all major Medical Insurers. For self-paying patients, the consultation fee is £150 and an ultrasound of both legs is £99. For further information visit www.simonhobbsveins.co.uk

“Ash, I came to see you after I had Rhinoplasty 10 years ago, abroad. I was very unhappy with the results. But when you performed the nonsurgical Rhinoplasty on my nose, it was an amazing result which has changed my nose on the outside to my desired shape, and gave me all the confidence and reassurance from the inside as well! I thank you so much for the revolutionary treatment.” Chris

Kia Rio
BY ROB TAYLOR
LARGEST AND MOST SPACIOUS RIO TO DATE
Kia lovingly refers to its new Rio as a ‘little Titan’. At first I was flummoxed by this incidental reference, buried deep within Kia’s publicity material, but now, I think I get it. The new Rio is the Korean brand’s best seller globally – this is a titanic feat. It is the largest and most spacious Rio to date so, like Saturn’s moon, it is bigger than you’d ever imagine it to be – especially since it still belongs to the super-mini class.
languid when you want it to be. Motorways are not its downfall.
New suspension and steering provides ‘a more grown-up feel on the road’ and because this is the fourth incarnation of the loveable hatchback it is no upstart either: it has pedigree, in fact you might say it’s wise and mature beyond its 17 year history, like one of the Titans from Greek mythology.
It may cost so much more (£16,295) but it’s so very worth it: 16” alloys, automatic airconditioning with a defogging system, faux-leather upholstery, 7” display screen, heated front seats and steering wheel and satellite navigation are features which really stand out on the now fivedoor only model. The Rio ‘3’ also boasts Autonomous Emergency Braking as standard, as well as a Lane Departure Warning system to keep the inattentive safe – it’ll even auto-apply the brakes if an errant pedestrian stumbles in front of it. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much safety and security at work in this little hatchback that I’m surprised Kia found room for all the cabling inside its modest chassis.
Of course to be a titan one must be powerful as well as sizeable. So bringing power to the mix is a seven-strong power-train lineup, led by the 1 litre 99bhp T-GDi engine I have here. It certainly won’t impress the speed freaks among you but for anyone looking for a sensible, plucky little motor, which is pared down and puckered up ready to pack a punch, this is just the job. It feels sprightly when out on the road, and yet it can be 62
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH 2018
Shorn of all optional add-ons, you can buy a Rio at an eye-wateringly attractive £12,135. But don’t expect full-on Trappist monk guise for this price because Kia is hugely generous with equipment at every spec level, even entry-level ‘1’ supplies air-conditioning and Bluetooth. However, I’d still urge you to push the boat out further until you arrive at this, the ‘3’ variant.
Better looking than the outing model with its ‘tiger-nose’ grille, it has a longer wheelbase, bonnet and front overhang. This in no way affects how wieldy the Rio is to manoeuvre and park: visibility is unadulterated and steering is light and precise. The driving position is well matched to drivers of all sizes through much steering wheel and seat adjustment. Passengers benefit also from best-in-class leg, shoulder and headroom, despite a lower roofline. They can also enjoy another first in class: USB ports both front and rear. Small, underpowered engines that make use of turbo-charging to deliver power can often suffer with throttle lag, which detracts from the driving experience. However, this T-GDi engine is a real star in that it delivers its torque fairly and evenly across the rev range, providing a smooth outpouring of 171Nm. This helps with fuel economy to give a score of 62.8mpg combined – not bad for a small hatchback, in fact until only quite recently such total performance in all categories would have been the preserve of much larger vehicles. I really am struggling to find fault. Except for its ‘little Titan’ nickname, perhaps: but then that’s only because I’ve run out of similies.
Land Rover Discovery
BY ROB TAYLOR
A CLASS OF ITS OWN
For a long time choosing to buy a Land Rover Discovery was a no-brainer. Peerless as the ultimate Swiss Army knife of motoring, it was in a class of its own – but that’s no longer the case. Today it is merely one of many options available to buyers looking to own the ‘complete’ car. The market is awash with competition: from BMW there is the X5, from Volvo the XC90 and from Audi the Q7. At least this is the case on paper, however if you get out and drive these colossal lumps of metal the story is quite different. The Discovery has soul where the others have none. It doesn’t pretend to be sporty or stylish; it isn’t pretentious and most of all it’s unapologetically British. Quirkiness trumps uniformity any day of the week. The Discovery really is a rare example of form following function. Take a look at it from the rear and you’ll notice just how pragmatic its design really is – more imposing than the white cliffs of Dover, squared-off and angular simply to make a real
seven-seater which allows for unwieldy loads to be posted easily through the boot. No feminine lines or nods to style, it is a brute designed to go above and beyond everything life can throw at it. The Land Rover’s off-road capabilities are legendary but few will use this vehicle for much more than traversing the occasional muddy lane or frostcovered driveway. I used it to drive around Wolverhampton and surrounding areas during a spell of unseasonable warmth and in so doing gave the Discovery its truest test, because traditionally this is the domain in which it has struggled most against its rivals. However I’m thrilled to say that this new Disco – or more specifically this £64,195 254bhp 3.0-litre TDI HSE variant – eclipses all other pretenders where it really matters: on the road. OK, so the price will cause more than just a little squeak of shock in some of you readers – especially when I tell you that with options it costs nearly £70,000 – but if you elect to cheapen this ride, you’ll regret it. Only with a small moon-moving 443lb ft of torque on tap from the delightful V6 turbo-
diesel engine will you fully feel the majesty available beneath your right foot, through the seamless eight-speed auto gearbox. As mentioned, you won’t really need the permanent four-wheel drive (nor the ensuing premium at the fuel pumps) or Land Rover’s latest All-Terrain Response 2 system but, like insurance, it’s nice to have just in case. A new monocoque construction saves masses of weight and unburdens the Discovery from the usual criticism relating to handling. I found it to be hugely impressive in this department, considering it weighs over 2 tonnes. Get it on the motorway and the miles just drop off with consummate ease. The upmarket cabin is a genuinely enjoyable and relaxing place to be and it has me imaging a future where self-driving cars make us buy based almost entirely upon the luxury available inside. On this basis there can be no better place in which to sit. Drive the Discovery and let all that ails you on the roads of modern Britain melt away.

SPINAL S E R VI CE S S N OW BA L L Two New Nuffield Spinal Surgeons Appointed
Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital
Consultant spinal surgeons Mr Panteleimon Papanikolaou and Mr Khalid Saeed have recently joined the spinal team at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital, with a snowball effect of boosting spinal services for private patients, bringing the number of spinal consultants to five. Originally Panteleimon Papanikolaou comes from Greece, where he attended school, then qualified in Rome and completed his specialty training in Athens. His neurosurgery fellowships were at the Walton Centre, Liverpool and in Newcastle upon Tyne. He is fluent in three languages, these being English, Greek and Italian. His NHS consultant practice is split between Royal Wolverhampton Hospital and University Hospital of North Midlands, Stoke on Trent, where he has been based for the last four years.
Khalid Saeed was born in Lahore, Pakistan where he undertook his medical education and junior doctor roles, gaining two merit scholarships there. In 1990, he moved to Ireland and obtained Higher Surgical qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and moved to the UK in 1995. His spinal fellowships were at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham and the Walton Centre, Liverpool as well as completing a visiting fellowship in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition to English, he is fluent in Punjabi and Urdu. He has experience of working in hospitals in the North West, Southampton and Swansea and his NHS consultant post is New Cross Hospital, where he has worked for the last seven years. The spinal disorders service at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital extends from advice and joint injections through to treatment with keyhole surgery and major open surgery to reconstruct the spine. Both Mr Saeed and Papanikolaou’s specialist areas are degenerative disease of the spine, including sciatica, leg pain, slipped disc and spinal stenosis, neck and arm pain, spondylolisthesis and sponylolysis. Mr Papanikolaou has specific expertise in spine trauma

and spinal tumours. Mr Saeed is experienced in treating spinal pain with vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty for osteoporotic fractures and various injection techniques. Explaining that the results of spinal surgery are now far better than people realise, Mr Papanikolaou says “Sometimes the assessment will show that generalised back pain is a result of wear and tear and, following tests, the patient can be reassured that the problem isn’t anything more serious. Over time, we are seeing more conditions related to age, such as spinal stenosis, a complaint caused by pressure on the nerves in the lower back – this causes pain when walking. “ Mr Saeed adds, “Spinal surgery has improved over the last 10 years and many procedures such as those for trapped nerves have a 90% success rate. Patients with sciatica typically go to their GP with severe leg pain and possible numbness. The most common cause is a herniated disc pressing against the nerves in the back. Where surgery is necessary, this involves a very small incision and a small part of the disc is shaved away, giving the patient instant pain relief.” For a taste of what’s available, there are regular free events at the hospital in Tettenhall. On the evening of Thursday 1 March 2018, there will be a presentation on Spinal Problems with specialist consultant Mr Papanikolaou. To book early for this, or to find out about other patient-focused events, please ring 01902 793269.
