I often get asked by my clients how the relatively new main residence nil rate band works and also the implications of gifting money or property to their children so I thought I would look at the consequences of both. Main Residence nil Rate Band This came into effect for anyone who died after 5th July 2015 who owned their home and is passing the property to a direct descendent. A direct descendant is defined as a child, grandchild or other lineal descendant (including a spouse or civil partner of a lineal descendant – including their widow, widower or surviving civil partner). A child will include step, adopted and foster 4

children and also a child where the individual was appointed as a guardian or special guardian for that child when they are under 18.

the maximum available amount of the RnRB will increase yearly and for deaths in the following tax years it will be:

Nephews, nieces, siblings and other relatives are not included.

• £125,000 in 2018/19

The home must be left to direct descendants so that it becomes part of the beneficiaries’ estate following the death. Where a home is left to beneficiaries who are a mixture of direct descendants and other individuals, the value of the home must be apportioned between all of them.

• £175,000 in 2020/21

An estate will also be entitled to the Residential Nil Rate Band (RNRB) when an individual has downsized to a less valuable home or sold / given away their home after 7th July 2015. Gifts with reservation will qualify as HMRC treats the home as being included in the estate. The RNRB may therefore be available for that home if it is given away to a direct descendant.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2018

• £150,000 in 2019/20 In later years, the maximum RNRB will increase in line with inflation (based on the Consumer Prices Index). For married couples and civil partners, any unused RNRB can be transferred when the surviving spouse or civil partner dies after 5th April 2017, regardless of when first death occurred GiftinG Money oR PRoPeRty to childRen New research from Direct Line has found that 6.9 million people (20 per cent) have given their children “their inheritance” early in order to avoid or reduce the amount of inheritance tax payable on their estate.

Whilst this is a sure fire way of reducing this tax burden, providing they survive for 7 years, it does come with drawbacks. Firstly, it means that they have lost control or access to that money or property and, should their circumstances change in the future, it could be that their standard of living is adversely affected. Secondly, with today’s society, we are seeing an increased number of divorces and once children have been gifted money or property it becomes part of their estate which is then taken into consideration when a divorce settlement is reached. Historically, the use of Flexible Trusts has been the method of source to try and protect what they have safely in the knowledge that if their children do get divorced or are made bankrupt, part or all of their inheritance is not lost however this does entail losing control of that capital. So what are the alternatives if they want to protect their estate but still retain control and more importantly access to capital if required? We have for many clients recommended products that qualify for Business Property Relief (BPR) as this gives two great benefits: 1. You have to survive for only 2 years and not 7 if gifting or investing in a trust. 2. You still retain control and access to your capital.

Should you wish to find out more about reducing your liability to Inheritance Tax please feel free to contact us.

Wrap up warm and make a trip to Shugborough Estate

This November, wrap up warm and make a trip to Shugborough Estate to enjoy the cooler weather in the great outdoors.

before you're 11¾ ’ booklet. At Shugborough you can fly a kite, jump in muddly puddles and play pooh sticks down at Essex Bridge.

The National Trust property in Staffordshire is the perfect place to get the most out of your day, with activities and adventures for all the family. Why not take in the beauty of Staffordshire and take part in one of the winter walks that will take you all over the estate? After you’ve soaked up this special part of Staffordshire’s heritage, treat yourself to a tasty cream tea from the cafes and do some of your Christmas shopping in the shops.

The Georgian Mansion is closed during November so that is can be thoroughly cleaned and conserved. During this time, beautiful festive decorations will be installed, so be sure to come back in December for some Christmastime delights. It is never too early to start thinking about Christmas, so put Shugborough at the top of your list for a festive visit. Come along to the carol evening on the 7th and the lantern parades on the 21st and 22nd December.

There is no better place to be than Shugborough when the seasons change. The Estate covers 900 acres of Grade 1 listed Parkland, full of a variety of tree species that will be starting to shed their fiery leaves with the cooler weather. For the more adventurous explorers, why not take your four legged friend on a walk? The National Trust looks after land as far as Great Haywood Cliffs and Stafford Plantation. Make sure you ask at visitor reception for one of the walks maps.

At this time of year, Shugborough’s gardening team will be working hard to make sure that the wonderful walled garden is prepared for the cold weather. Make sure to take snapshots of the formal gardens and blistery trees, as the winter sun shines through the bare branches. Shugborough’s working farm is preparing for the winter ahead. On your visit you may see their farm team out and about looking after the variety of rare and historic breeds on the estate. Shugborough’s farm cares for longhorn cows, southdown sheep, dorkin chickens and tamworth pigs. As a working farm, the animals are out grazing in the fields so make sure you say hello. If you’re bringing your little ones for some fun, be sure to head over to their play area ‘Explorer’s Wood’ and have a go on the zip wire, and try to complete you ’50 things to do 6

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2018

Staffordshire County Council gave back management of Shugborough Estate to the National Trust in November 2016, and the site has been open under the Trust since March 2017. This means that all members have to do is to scan their card for entrance to the entire Estate. The site is open year round, only closing on Christmas day. The National Trust is a charity, meaning that your memberships, visits and any money you spend whilst on site, all goes towards caring for Shugborough Estate. Buying a membership will also allow you entrance into over 500 other National Trust properties, including Wightwick Manor and Gardens in Wolverhampton, Biddulph Grange Garden near Stoke-on-Trent and Attingham Park near Shrewsbury.

CHARITY CHALLENGE TEAM RAISE £13,500

The Lord Bilston Team celebrate raising 13,500 for Compton Care - Image credit Paul Berry

In July 2018 a group of eighteen friends took on their most extreme fundraising challenge to date. The Lord Bilston Big Challenge team ‘Carried the Load’ as they transported 2 members of staff from Wolverhampton charity Compton Care a total of 140 miles. The group carried Compton Care Nurse Specialist Debbie Smith and Marketing Manager Grace Lee from Swansea to Wolverhampton on the back of a tandem bike, in a stretcher and in a canoe in a gruelling challenge that lasted 25.5 hours. Group leader Brendon Turner was inspired to take on the challenge in honour of his late father, Lord Bilston Dennis Turner, who received support from Compton Care following his cancer diagnosis in 2014. Mr Turner commented: “We know the staff at Compton do fantastic work caring for people who have been diagnosed with an incurable illness. They carry a load for so many people at their most stressful and sad times, which can be really difficult, so on this occasion we wanted to ‘Carry the Load’ for them.

He added: “I am just keeping my Dad’s memory alive in a positive way, whilst at the same time helping out a really caring and important charity.” In a special celebration event held on Saturday 29th September Mr Turner announced the total raised from the Carry the Load challenge to be over £13,500. Compton Care Marketing Manager, and one of the staff members who was carried as part of this year’s challenge, Grace Lee commented: “This is a truly incredible amount which will change the lives of so many local people. This amount will fund the equivalent of 119 patients receiving personal care and support in their own homes. Since starting their fundraising journey in 2014 the dedicated group have raised over £77,000 for Compton. Ms Lee added: “We cannot thank the challenge team enough for what they have done for Compton. We simply would not exist were it not for groups of people like this who choose to give up their time and their money to ensure that local people who are living with incurable conditions are able to access the care and support they need and deserve.” For more pictures and videos from the Carry the Load challenge please visit twitter.com/lordbilston

The Royal British Legion

Saying Thank You to Women of the War 2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and to commemorate this historic year, The Royal British Legion is leading the nation in saying Thank You to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world. Whilst most of the soldiers on the frontline were men, The Royal British Legion has produced a very special brooch to say Thank You for the massive contribution made by women in the war, and to those women who continue to be such an integral part of the Armed Forces family today. Women not only played a huge role in directly helping the war effort, from being nurses in field hospitals to working in dangerous munitions factories, but the war also helped change women’s place in society and demonstrated that they were the physical and intellectual equal of men. Edwardian women were expected to be mothers, carers and homemakers. But with men leaving to fight in the war, women had to take on the jobs of those who were serving. From 1914, millions took on jobs traditionally held More than 1.5 million women flooded into these industries and others to replace men away at the front. In 1914 just over 2 million worked in factories and by the end of the war it was nearly 3 million.

For the first time, large numbers of women worked in the civil service, business, banks, shops, transport and farming. Many women who had been in solitary occupations prior to the war, such as domestic service, revelled in the “sisterhood” of larger groups. Although when the war was over many women were forced to quit industrial jobs to make way for returning men, their role in the war had fundamentally changed how society regarded them and in 1918 around 8.5 million women first got the vote, following the actions of the suffragette movement. The Women of the War brooch is a stunning piece of jewellery. Plated with a gold tone and hand finished with brilliant baguette crystals, the poppy brooches are dedicated to the memory of the courageous women who served and lost their lives as a direct result of the First World 16

War, whose names are recognised by CWGC as women serving in the auxiliary units during the First World War. Each brooch comes with a certificate commemorating the life of one of these brave women and also acts as a way of saying thank you to all the women, who often have untold stories, who ultimately went on to change society and women’s place within it. Tile Choice will now be working in partnership with George Clarke, architect, TV presenter, campaigner and educator. George is the voice of our new radio adverts and will be making an appearance at one of our stores very soon. George Clarke believes that architecture, art and design should be accessible to all and has the power to transform and enrich lives. George recognises and values the process that enables people to unlock the beauty of where they live. There is generally no place like home, this is the space which allows for creative form and expression that we can all embrace and manipulate. We all have the possibility of experimenting with our environment and in doing so improving the way we live and hopefully learn something new along the way. Some of George’s TV programmes include Old House New Home, Amazing Spaces and Restoration Man. George believes that “Home is the most powerful form of architecture that affects us all, and if you are lucky enough to have a warm and comfortable roof over your head, it is a very special place indeed”. 28 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2018

George aims to challenge the notion that great art and design is only accessible by the few and he tries to shine the spotlight on many disciplines including the more traditional spheres of architecture, art and design. Sharing skills and knowledge whether undertaking a brave restoration or a new build on a budget, he emphasises the value of a team which includes a combination of architect, designer, engineer, craftsman, artists, manufacturer and owner. His tastes and interests are wide-ranging – architecture, painting, photography, furniture, art, clothing, motorcycle and bike design. For him, the vital key is whether they have been designed with passion and integrity. For more information visit his website. With our ever expanding range of tiles which is frequently updated to fulfil not only the latest trends but also covering the classic, traditional styles. Here at Tile Choice we believe style can be achieved no matter what the budget is, why not pop in to store or give us a call to speak with one of our friendly, knowledgeable members of staff for design ideas to create an amazing space and a free, no obligation quote so you are ready to transform your home.

Rat Facts by Penkridge Pest Control Ltd The main species of rats in the UK, which are commonly known as the Brown Rat or Common Rat. The brown rat commonly lives close to humans, often occupying buildings, farmland, sewers and rubbish tips. Female brown rats can become pregnant again soon after giving birth, and can raise as many as 12 or 13 litters a year. The brown rat can reach sexual maturity at just two to three months old, further contributing to this species’ rapid reproductive rate

Young brown rats face a wide variety of predators, including owls, foxes, weasels and domestic cats and dogs and most do not live for more than a year. Rats have well developed senses of smell taste and touch. They have an acute sense of hearing, frequently using ultrasound to communicate, and are particularly sensitive to any sudden noise. Rats need to gnaw to keep their constantly growing incisor teeth worn down. They damage woodwork, plastic, bricks and lead pipes, and will strip insulation from electrical cables. Fires can easily be started after a rat has gnawed a cable. Gas and water pipes are also at risk. If you need any treatment against rats in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196. 30 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2018

We have the expert knowledge to restore your surface to its former glory. First impressions count and with the great British weather driveways can quickly gather moss, ingrained dirt and lichen. Over the last 10 years, many people have had a lovely patio or hard standing areas to gain more space and to keep maintenance to a minimum. However while these look exceptional when they are firstly completed they can without the proper upkeep soon become quite abandoned looking, this is where we can come to your rescue and get your surface gleaming again. A man is as only as good as his tools, this statement is very true and this is why Clearstone Driveway Cleaning have invested in the very latest High Pressure Rotary surface cleaner, with the correct tools. If you are thinking about Driveway or Patio cleaning in Staffordshire, then Clearstone Driveway Cleaning are the answer! What Our Customers Say: My driveway had accumulated a vast amount of foreign bodies, from grass growing in between the blocks to a rather nasty cover off moss. Clearstone cleaned it all off and left me with a pristine driveway again, I won’t leave it years before I call them again. Mr R.Ward Walsall Initially I just wanted my patio cleaning as it was looking very tired, but after Clearstone made such a good job of it, my husband had them do the car parks of both his businesses. I can’t believe what a difference it makes. Mrs E Edwards Stafford Please contact us for your free no obligation quote. Dark Flowers It’s the brightly coloured flowers in the garden that first catch our eyes but sometimes it’s the dark, smouldering beauty of the deep reds and purples that catch our hearts. There’s something beguiling about these dark beauties that makes us look again, their velvety colour urges us to touch them. I for one have become beguiled by them and always seek them out at the nursery or plant fair.

The brilliant thing is, some of our favourite and easiest to grow garden plants have varieties in these deep, smouldering colours as well as some more exotic species you can try. Here’s some of my favourites. For the cottage garden Aquilegia Black Barlow is the deepest red, nearly black with spiky double flowers. The Black Hollyhock (Alcea rosea Nigra) with its large dark red flowers with silky petals is great grown against a wall or fence to add height.

There’s a hardy geranium for every situation in the garden and it’s no surprise that there are some lovely dark flowered ones as well. “Lily Lovell”, “Samobor” and “Our Pat” are great for a shady spot. There are several dark flowered cornflowers. The best is the maroon coloured “Jordy” who reblooms from May to October if cut back hard each time flowering stops. The variety “Black Sprite” is smaller and in my experience weaker growing. Penstemons are long flowering favourites that we used to treat as tender, but these days they survive all but the coldest winters. The varieties “Raven” and “Blackbird” both have flowers the colour of port wine.

Less hardy is the Chocolate Cosmos, so called because of the chocolate scent and the deep dark brown-red of the flowers. These grow from tubers like a dahlia and are probably best dug up and kept in a greenhouse over winter. They will survive most winters outdoors, but they will be very late to come into leaf and even later to flower. Speaking of Dahlias, these have perhaps the biggest choice of dark flowers going. I love “Nuit D’ete” (“Summer Night”) and “Dark Spirit” especially.

Another plant to add height in the garden is Angelica gigas which has large heads of beetroot red flowers in summer. Angelicas are called “monocarpic” by botanists meaning they die after flowering. Not to worry though as they are easily replaced by seed which should be collected as soon as it starts to fall from the plant and sown immediately. The seedlings will pop up in spring.

Definitely not hardy is Aeonium Schwartzkopf which is a branching succulent with almost black petals. It can’t stand any frost, so I bed it out in June and pot it up again in October to be kept in a greenhouse or light windowsill over winter. There is also an Arum Lily (Zantedeshia) named Schwartzkopf with lovely, waxy black flowers. These are also not quite hardy and are best kept in a greenhouse over winter.

Astrantias (Masterwort) are esteemed for their long flowering period and tough constitutions. There are lots of deep ruby red varieties available; all are equally good; look out for “Gill Richardson” and “Hadspen Blood” particularly. Astrantias will self-seed but these will be a mixture of dark red, pink or white flowered seedlings. Those with dark red or black coloration on their fresh leaves are most likely to have dark red flowers.

Dark flowers can be grown on masse, but this can look a little sombre, so I liven them up with touches of white, cream, yellow or bright orange flower in the border. Good plants for this are Sisyrhynchium striatum, anthemis, tulip or achillea.

Irises are one of the glories of the late spring and early summer border and always the stars of the Chelsea Flower Show. There are some really dark flowered ones available among the scented bearded Iris. My favourites are the midheight “Black Tie Affair” and “Deep Black” both of which have deep, inky violet flowers unfurling from black buds. Bearded Iris need a sunny spot and good drainage in winter. The knobbly rhizomes they grow from must be planted with their tops out of the soil and exposed to the sun. 32 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2018

Brick chair sculpture unveiled in Hednesford Park

A brick chair sculpture has been unveiled in Hednesford Park, nearly 20 years after it was originally donated to Cannock Chase Council. The chair will be a significant addition to the Story Walk events and activities held in the park lead by the Community and Education team throughout the year and will encourage local schools to use it to promote story telling sessions as part of the school curriculum. The sculpture was made by Rosemary Cripps in 1999 whilst she was studying for a degree in Ceramics and Sculpture at Wolverhampton University. Rosemary’s idea was to create a large sculpture for displaying in a public space that could be used by all ages. The chair was made from large raw clay bricks, which were carved into the chair design. Rosemary then had to dismantle the chair piece by piece, hollowing out each brick so that they would not fracture in the high-temperature kiln, then mark them with a unique code and drawing plan, so it could be reassembled once it had been fired. The project was sponsored by Ibstocks Bricks of Aldridge in Walsall, who fired the clay bricks in their kiln and transported them to Cannock Chase Council for storage. Earlier this summer a special foundation was prepared and the sculpture was built using Rosemary’s numbering system and detailed plan in Hednesford Park. The chair unveiling was held on Friday 7th September in conjunction with the libraries ‘Mischief Makers Summer

Reading Challenge’ where children had to complete reading 6 books of their choice during the 6 week holidays. The event included a ‘pie face challenge’ for those who had completed the challenge along with fun craft activities in the library and storytelling of mischief stories in Rosemary’s chair. Councillor Christine Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said “I am so pleased that the chair has been built in Hednesford Park. It will be a great addition to the story telling activities which take place in the park each year. We thank Rosemary for donating the sculpture to the Council.” Rosemary Cripps added “As part of my project in 1999, I wanted to create a large sculpture for display in a public space. I am delighted that my vision is now a reality and that the chair will be used by the local community in conjunction with Hednesford Library. I hope it will give pleasure to visitors to the park for many years to come. I am grateful to have been invited to the event, to see the chair in place and meet and thank some of the people who have been involved in reassembling my chair in the park, almost 20 years since it was created.”

A idea to retain, protect and develop this unique site and landscape for use as public open space and leisure purposes, for the creation of a community sport and recreation hub that can be used by everyone both young and old providing lasting benefits for the whole community now and into the future. I am delighted to see the children enjoying the areas created and hope that they continue to do so.” Councillor Christine Mitchell said “This site and its development is important to the Council and more significantly our residents and I have followed this project with great interest from the outset, as have my fellow cabinet members in ensuring that this development was delivered. I am delighted that phase one has completed and its lovely to see people enjoying the site, which with the help of Joe from the Friends group The Stadium has a great future.” The Stadium offers many opportunities in the future with thanks to our leisure provider Inspiring healthy lifestyles, who will be organising regular walking and running groups, an inclusive cycling hub, with adapted cycles for all abilities and helping residents make the most of the community allotments with regular allotment days.

The £1.3m site now boasts an adventure play area, BMX pump track, footpaths, with running routes, green gym equipment, new entrance gates and fencing, CCTV cameras and community allotments with allotment building. CHRISTMAS RECIPES

SAVOURY - CANAPES

Sweet potato scones with roquefort, fig jam, walnuts and roast duck breast. Serve this before lunch if you’re having drinks first - goes well with red wine. Serves 8 - Prep and cooking time Approx 1.5 hours

INGREDIENTS

2 sweet potato 200g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tablespoon natural yoghurt Pinch of Maldon sea salt Cold butter diced 2 Duck breast 4 Figs 50g caster sugar 8 Walnuts 100g Roquefort

METHOD

Bake the sweet potatoes until very soft then cut in half whilst they are still warm and scoop out the flesh. Mix flour salt cold butter chunks to make breadcrumbs - mix in the sweet potato once cold and add in baking powder and yoghurt then mix well into a dough - roll out dough and cut into shapes. Egg wash the tops and bake for 12 minutes. Whilst the scones are baking slice the figs and mix with the sugar in the small pan and gently warm until the figs break down. Add a little water to help the sugar dissolve. Season and dry fry the duck breasts skin side down pouring the fat off into a jar. Now roast the breasts for about 15 minutes in the oven on 180oC - allow to rest for 10 minutes. Once your scones are out the oven and cooled slice them in half and fill them with your fig jam, roquefort, walnuts and then slice of duck breast -- serve immediately. Serve before your Christmas lunch with a nice red wine - for advice on using this recipe email mike@takefood.co.uk

SWEET - PUDDING

Banana bread pudding with spiced rum whipped cream Something different for pudding this year? Serves 8 - Prep and cooking time Approx 1.5 hours

INGREDIENTS

Banana bread 120 g of unsalted butter 240g caster sugar 1 beaten egg 3 bashed up ripe bananas 240g plain flour 2 tsp of baking powder 1 pinch of ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp of fresh grated nutmeg Pinch of salt 120g of milk 2 tsp of vanilla (optional) 40g of raisins Spiced cream Bottle of spiced rum 50g of caster sugar 300ml of double cream

METHOD

For the banana bread cream the butter and sugar together in the food mixer with the paddle or K beater until light and fluffy. Then add in all the other ingredients and beat on high for about 20 seconds or until well combined. Grease the loaf tin and line with parchment paper, pour in the batter and bake for 1 hour at 170oC Whisk the double cream, sugar and rum together until thick and then serve with your banana bread whilst its still warm. If you really like rum you can poke lots of holes into the top pf the bread and pour over some rum for the bread to soak up whilst cooling - not too much though as it will be soggy. Serve with a glass of spiced rum or advocaat - for advice on using this recipe email mike@takefood.co.uk

Gabriela’s charity chop for Little Princess Trust Gabriela Holland never had short hair and only ever had a trim, but she decided to get her hair cut off to shoulder length so that she can donate it to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides wigs to children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses. When a couple of years ago Gabriela found out she could cut off her lovely blond hair to make wigs for children affected by cancer she jumped at the idea. Gabriela’s mom said: “It is very inspiring that a 7 year old girl wants to do this. She had been asking me for ages, so I agreed to it just over three months ago and it has gone from there. We are so very proud of Gabriela and hope it will help some little child whose hair can’t grow back like hers will.” Gabriela had 12 inches cut off on the 7th September at VIP Hair in Cheslyn Hay. She has also raised £500 to date, which will also be sent to the children’s 52

We offer a complete jewellery restoration service for that item that has just been loved too much and is tired. For examples see before and after photographs on our gallery at www. djmbespokejewellery.co.uk I currently design and make jewellery for our retail jewellers Emporium 13, based in Sedgley, West Midlands. The shop has been established over 10 years and offers a diverse selection of jewellery not usually found on the high street.

We are a small independent jewellery design centre based in Cannock Staffordshire.

Contact me personally on 01543 328885 or email sales@djmbespokejewellery.co.uk for all your jewellery based questions I would be delighted to speak further with regards to any of our services.

I have worked in the Jewellery business for 18 years specialising in bespoke handmade designs providing that very personal approach from the outset by way of private consultation. This personal yet surprisingly affordable service enables the client’s involvement from concept to completion. I am proud to guarantee that every commission I make is a handmade, one off, unique design. We liaise with the client enabling them to translate their designs and thoughts and I can provide initial concept drawings where required. Over the years I have found that sentiment can often outweigh the intrinsic value of the specific piece of jewellery. In respect of this I regularly use clients old, or perhaps inherited unwearable pieces and remodel using original stones and precious metal in order to carry that sentiment through to something current, wearable and unique. A popular area with regards this service is the refashioning of inherited loved ones wedding bands and/or engagement ring which, I have found, regularly sit at the bottom of a drawer gathering dust. Clients are often surprised at the designs created from yesteryear pieces and are excited to discover that they could wear loved ones jewellery as a new exclusive designs. Clients are frequently surprised at the affordability of the service. Hospital Radio Stafford

Gets the thumbs up

For many people a day in hospital can be a daunting prospect so being able to switch on the radio and hear a friendly voice can make a world of difference. For Keith Hibberts being a hospital radio DJ is all about providing a personal service to help bring a smile to the faces of patients and give them a distraction from their illness. The 69-year old, from Cheslyn Hay, has been volunteering at Hospital Radio Stafford since he retired as a project manager for a communications company. The charity is currently recruiting more volunteers, and Keith says: “It was 12 years ago this year that I decided I wanted to go back into hospital radio presenting as I used to do a programme in the mid-1970s at DDHB (Dudley and District Hospital Broadcasting) but the daytime work got in the way. When retirement reared its head I thought this would be the best way to give something back into the community and I applied to Hospital Radio Stafford and got the post. I love visiting the wards and talking to the patients and getting requests. I meet some lovely people who want to chat and have a song played. I am always surprised by people, like for example one female patient at the age of 76,wants Meatloaf, and one little nine year old who wants a Beatle song,

That’s why I like this job. We must remember that the station is for the patients”. A free phone number is also available for listeners to ring in for requests and we will look in our vast library or in the attic. If we have it we will play it whether it be pop, classic or country and western’’. Keith enjoys playing a wide range of music but his favourite includes Motown and anything by the Electric Orchestra but especially Mr Blue Sky. Hospital Radio Stafford broadcasts to County Hospital, Stoke Hospital, Cannock Chase Hospital and also Katherine House. Anyone interested in volunteering can find out more by visiting www.hrstafford.org.uk or calling 01785 223456

SI Cannock & District Information Day

Cannock Soroptimists held a successful day in Cannock Town Centre recently when many members of the public paid them a visit to donate items of sanitary wear and also toiletries. They had responded to articles in the press and to posters in both Cannock and Hednesford. Amongst those to donate was Tesco store in Hednesford – they had displayed a poster and were very keen to help those women and girls who are unable to afford sanitary wear on a month by month basis. Research has shown there are a large number of families who struggle financially with mothers often having to make choices which are unreasonable – whether to buy food or whether to buy sanitary wear for themselves or their daughters. The items donated will be distributed via Pathway and Staffordshire Women’s Aid to women in Cannock who are in need of this help. Should anyone else wish to donate, Food Banks are regularly asked for sanitary wear and so donations can be made to them – also, members of SI Cannock will always accept donated items.

Four Seasons: Creating a Home From Home Growing old, needing help to care for ourselves and keeping our independence are concerns we’ll all face at some point in our lives. For many, this can mean moving home to find that level of care and support. At Tudor and Windsor House, we know that moving home is an emotional and challenging time at any age, even more so in later life. Our ‘Home to Home Promise’ helps makes this transition as easy and comforting as possible. Before a resident moves in, we get to know what and who are important to them and their needs. Their favourite foods, activities, hobbies they wish to continue and new things they want to try. So their care is focussed on them from the moment they arrive. Our homes are situated in the communities our residents grew up in. They run activities ensuring residents stay young at heart, keeping in touch with the community they have always been a part of.

Jacky Reed, Managing Director said: “Understanding our residents’ needs is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that quality care is about more than supporting a person’s physical needs but knowing and making sure a person is enjoying experiences that are special to them. “Our Quality of Life Programme allows us to log and act almost immediately upon every comment from residents, relatives, carers and professional visitors about the experience and care we provide. It’s all linked to our quality assurance programme giving you peace of mind.” Visit www.fshc.co.uk for more information.

Come and meet the team that care at Tudor House and Windsor House Be sure to discover how our unique technology is setting a new standard in consistently delivering special experiences for the residents of our care homes here. To find out more please call or pop in for a chat

SI Cannock & District Your Body, Your Rules

The Your Body, Your Rules anti-sexting project has been officially launched in four local schools: Cannock Chase High, Cardinal Griffin College, Chase Terrace Technology College and Staffordshire University Academy with the launch at Kingsmead High School due in the next few weeks. Ambassadors and members of staff met with Soroptimists Jackie Prince, June Bould (President) and Trish Mellor and the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Arnold. Each school presented their plans for implementation of the project within their own school. Plans varied from year group assemblies when scenarios about sexting - taking and sending photos of nudes - will be acted out, to presentations to tutor groups giving some hard hitting facts about the issue to safe email or anonymous question boxes which can be used for students to ask for advice. In all cases, students’ knowledge about the issue will be ascertained at the start of the project and again as the project develops.

It is illegal for anyone to be asked to take or send a nude photo of themselves or for anyone to actually take and send such a photo; it is also illegal to receive or store such a photograph. The aim of the project in schools, spearheaded by Cannock Soroptimists, is for students to understand what is appropriate, to know who to go to should they have concerns and to have the confidence to say ‘no’ if ever the need arises. Sue Arnold, DPCC, and June Bould, President of SI Cannock and District, presented each Ambassador with a YBYR badge ad a certificate which will be used within their CV portfolios. The Ambassadors were very excited about the project and keen to ensure its success, they had all put a lot of work into their research and development of their presentations, ensuring they will be appropriate to the age groups within High School. The project will be monitored by staff members and Soroptimists with regular meetings and reports throughout the year. Cannock Soroptimists and the DPCC are very proud of the students and keen to watch progress.

Learn More 4 A - Laurence Dalton English: Why it is more like Science and Maths than most students realise. As a private English tutor I very frequently start working with students who are much better at Maths and Science than English. This is because the brain either typically prefers Maths and Science (or logical, black and white thinking) or English (which leans more towards artistic and creative thinking). When I explain to the students that there are solid rules that they can follow, and actually the way they write in English can actually become very logical, students become a lot more confident. For example, when writing an article or a letter, there are certainly procedures or ‘rules’ to follow. If students consciously try to add these rules into their work at all times it is incredibly difficult for them to not be successful. I often say that students should try and put four of the following in each paragraph when they are writing to persuade: • • • • • • • •

Triples Rhetorical Question Statistics Reliable Quotation Anecdotes Emotive Vocabulary Repetition Personal Pronouns

"Good afternoon Laurence, Just a quick email to let you know that Josh Banner picked up his GCSE results this morning and managed to attain a 4 in English Language and a 5 in literature, which he was really happy with. Many thanks for your help again with Josh without which I think results would have been considerably lower."

Dawn

"We wanted to say a big thank-you for your help in getting Jennifer passes in her GCSE English Language and Literature. We did not give you much time, from February to May! But your structured methodology and positive detailed feedback was exactly what she needed to get her confidence to the point of a pass. The fact that she passed both English Language and Literature (the latter of which her school had advised her to drop as they did not think she would pass it!) shows how effective your help was. We would not hesitate to recommend you to others and would be happy to give a testimonial. We are just so very pleased you took Jennifer through to a pass first time round."

Anna & Richard

In ensuring that these are consistently present in their work students can make sure, when they are writing to persuade, that they are writing in the correct genre. This is, of course, what the examiner is looking for.

I hope that this helps.

Testimonials: "Hi, I thought you’d be pleased to know that Hewd was awarded a 7 in his GCSE English Language - a result we’re delighted with. I am sure he was in line for a 4 or 5 before he came to you for tutoring and for him to achieve a 7 is wonderful. All credit to your tutoring system, which provided detailed feedback at every step and always pushed him to try harder and keep improving."

How to keep your dog safe and happy this Christmas The season of joy and goodwill is nearly upon us. Christmas is a very exciting and busy time for us all, but it’s important we don’t forget about our four-legged friends in the midst of all the excitement! Their usual home environment is filled with trees, flowers and other decorations and there are odd noises such as crackers and fireworks. Your routine is likely to change and there may be unfamiliar visitors coming to the house. Here are a few top tips to keeping dogs safe and happy this festive season.

The Christmas Tree

Purchasing and decorating a Christmas tree in your home is a big part of celebrating this wonderful time of year. However, did you know that real trees can cause your dog irritation due to the mildly toxic oils contained within them?

stomach, this effectively runs a thread through the intestines and causes a linear foreign body which can be extremely serious! Your dog may also get a nasty shock if they chew through the electrical cable for your Christmas lights!

Festive Foods

To avoid this becoming a problem for your pet, you can purchase a smaller tree and raise it off the floor, or alternatively opt for a fake tree.

We all love to tuck into a tasty meal, treats and sweets during Christmas, but remember that certain foods aren’t good for your dog to consume.

If you’re leaving the house, don’t forget to keep your dog out of the room where your tree is located to avoid injury while you’re away.

Foods such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, sultanas, onion and alcohol can be damaging to your pet’s health, so keep these away from your dog at all times.

Most species are low toxicity but may cause a mild gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and/or diarrhoea) if chewed. Pine needles in themselves can get stuck in paws and cause irritation as well as potentially causing irritation or perforation of the intestines if eaten.

Be cautious of food that’s left on kitchen surfaces or food that falls from your plate whilst you’re eating. Cover up any leftovers on work surfaces and push them towards the back of the worktop so that they’re well out of reach. Remember you can always feed your pet their normal dinner or some dog treats of their own if you’re feeling extra festive.

Vacuum daily and ideally keep plenty of water in the bucket to help reduce the number of fallen needles.

Decorations

Dogs love to chew on all sorts of items around the home and your Christmas decorations are no exception. Place lightweight and delicate baubles out of reach, high up on the tree, so that your dog can’t bite through them and damage their mouth and teeth. Christmas decorations are designed to look attractive and beautiful; unfortunately this usually means they are also tempting to your furry friends. Whilst not often toxic in their own right they can still cause significant problems if ingested. Baubles will tend to splinter or smash into shards which can cause irritation, perforation or blockages and dogs tend to eat tinsel a little like spaghetti - often consuming an entire ribbon of tinsel in one go! Again these are often not especially toxic (even if not particularly nutritious either) but can bunch up and cause blockages or, more worryingly start to work their way through the guts whilst some is still in the 60

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2018

Presents

One area where people can come unstuck is with Christmas presents. We put a lot of effort in hiding away potential problems but then wrap up auntie Flo’s big box of chocolates to place under the tree. Although we can no longer tell what it is... our dogs can! Apart from the irritation of having them unwrap someone else’s present and having diarrhoea in the living room on Christmas day, there is likely to be an emergency trip to the vets needed. Make sure any tasty or tempting presents are placed high enough out of the way so that your dog can’t help themselves.

Lexus LS

NEW EXTERIOR DESIGN

The Lexus LS has always been somewhat of a rarity on UK roads. Ever since it was launched back in 1989 the flagship saloon has nonetheless tirelessly gone about its business for Lexus, quietly refining principle values, quietly laying down the gauntlet. Despite being up against the superlative Mercedes S Class it has stuck to its guns and refused to copy the far more financially successful formula laid down by the Germans. At a time when options for enthusiastic car buyers are dwindling fast, it remains, as ever, a towering example of how and why you need not and should not copy your neighbours. Assuming, of course, that you just happen to live in one of the more affluent areas of Wolverhampton – and are, perhaps, regularly driven to work by a chauffeur – and that your neighbour is in that same boat as well. I include this because a well-spec’d LS costs nigh on £100,000. And that’s why Lexus UK expects to sell only 100 each year. This is a staggeringly low-volume vehicle (compared to the Mercedes S Class: 2500 per year) and thus makes driving it – and being driven in it – all the more exciting. OK, I haven’t actually 62

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2018

been driven in it yet, but maybe one day… The original Lexus LS arrived after 1,400 engineers toiled for six solid years in an effort to build a luxury car that would rival the best in the world. Today, almost nothing has changed. Since then parent company Toyota may have become synonymous with superefficient automation on an industrial scale but in making the LS Lexus has taken a softer, more artisan approach to many facets of both design and execution. The oft-referred to ‘Takumi craftsmanship’ combines the best traditions of Japanese culture and aesthetics with modern design and technology and speaks loudest of this. Indeed, there have been many, many human hands all over this vehicle. I’m immediately impressed by the radical new exterior design: lower, wider and longer than the last, this coupe-like silhouette has nonetheless all the spaciousness of a prestige saloon inside – it is the very best of both worlds. And, looking closely inside, you’ll find a fit and finish that is nigh on otherworldly. The design of the new LS’s interior combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with advanced manufacturing techniques, and it’s reflected in elements such as the soft ambient lighting that makes the armrests appear to float next to the door panels. The driver-focused cockpit wraps you up in a sea of the

finest elements: fine leather, detailed metal and wood accents all add to a welcoming ambience. It is a thoroughly luxurious and modern space even when not in top-of-the-range fourwheel-drive ‘Premier’ spec. There are four trim levels to choose from, but even entry-level cars get a full-bodied suite of safety equipment, dual-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, 20” alloy wheels, an infotainment system complete with a 12.3” display, a host of concierge services and a 360-degree camera system as standard. And this is what this car is all about: the experience, the theatre of driving the sum total of everything that Lexus has to offer us right now. Sit in this car and you know you are sitting on the cutting edge of what’s possible. The ride quality on air suspension (standard except on entry-level models) is peerless and guaranteed to astonish. The 295bhp 3.5 litre V6 has no turbocharger but is boosted by a hybrid system to produce a ‘total system output’ of 354bhp. It powers either the rear or all four wheels and is more than able to hustle what is a decidedly heavy vehicle. Despite its bulk however the LS is accurate and quite composed in long corners. It’s a truly remarkable car. The LS is literally staggering to behold. If only I was one of the 100…

Honda Jazz

THE NEW FUNKY ONE

I can’t remember a Honda Jazz ever looking as funky as this new one. Old as the hills and traditionally a conservative dresser beloved by older demographics, the Jazz nonetheless finds itself well and truly jazzed up in its latest 2018 incarnation. And while it would be overegging it to say that its unveiling at the Frankfurt Motorshow last year created waves throughout the industry, there have been minor ripples felt as far away as Norfolk. It is now Honda’s best-selling car in the UK and I can see why: priced at a come-and-buy-me £14,115 for the entry level S grade vehicle, the Jazz ticks all the boxes for many. The range tops out at £17,155 for the new Sport edition, which features the new 128bhp 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine, and spec is high across the range with base-grade S models fitted as standard with air conditioning, cruise control with speed limiter and dusk sensing auto lights. Mild-mannered it may be but this vehicle is not short on things to shout about – especially in the case of the Sport version I have here.

With a peppy, revvable nonturbocharged engine put through a silky six-speed gearbox, the Jazz Sport makes decent progress both in terms of changing preconceptions and getting you from A to B. Based on the SE grade – which adds front and rear parking sensors, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and 15” alloy wheels – the Sport boasts a thinner front splitter beneath the lower grille, and triplestrake diffuser to the rear bumper – both finished with a sporty red accent line similar to the Civic Type R, LED headlights, front fog lamps, side sill skirts, a tailgate spoiler and gloss-black 16” alloy wheels. The interior features a unique pinstripe pattern on the upholstery and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, all of which are enhanced by orange stitching. Fans of the Civic Type R will be disappointed but, conversely, anyone caught thinking the Jazz is dull will be in for a wake-up call. 0-60mph comes up in 8.7 seconds and that’s not too shabby, but you’re wrong if you get too carried away with the ‘sportiness’ of the Jazz. This is after all but one of its many selling points.

boot and comfortable seats which fold every which way, allowing you to carry tall items. There’s loads of room inside its cabin; it comes in all colours – including the new Skyride Blue Metallic option; it is built (in Britain no less!) more robustly than the average nuclear bunker and has been engineered to within an inch of its life by the finest brains at one of the world’s foremost car producers. Get it out on the motorway and it will perform; drop it into the urban jungle and enjoy the helpful parking tech, the light-steering and ask it to run and run without complaint or problem – and deliver real-world economy of around 50mpg – and it will gladly pay you back tenfold, even at an as-tested price of £17,890. In short, this little car is a joy – even the seven-inch infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use and so is the £600 add-on Sat-nav system– and I’m a near neo-Luddite. Drive it today to re-discover a solid companion with newly added je ne sais quoi. If only I could improve so much with age...

It is instead more importantly still a Honda Jazz: an incredibly versatile and practical car with a 354-litre

New DXA scans. Before our consultants recommend a course of treatment for any of our patients, it is usual to undergo a diagnostic scan. Our hospital in Tettenhall offers the latest state-of-the-art technology in imaging equipment that ensures we provide our patients with a faster, more efficient service. The latest addition to our imaging department is a DXA ( Dual-energy X-Ray Absorptiometry ) - a special X-Ray procedure that measures the density of your bones. A DXA scan can help you find out if you have osteoporosis or are at risk of developing it.
