INNOVATIVE DIGITAL BROADBAND MRI SCANNER OFFICIALLY OPENED BY WOLVERHAMPTON MAYOR The new £1.9 million Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Suite installed at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital, was officially opened by Wolverhampton City Mayor, Councillor Barry Findlay, with other VIP guests including the Mayoress and Wolves FC midfielder Lee Evans in attendance . The hospital in Tettenhall is the medical partner of Wolverhampton Wanderers and the club is pleased to have this facility “on their doorstep’’.

Pictured: Wolverhampton City Mayor, Councillor Barry Findlay officially opens the new MRI scanner with the Mayoress, Phoebe Cartwrigh, Radiology Manager and Karen Pattison Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital.
The 1.5 teslar Ingenia MRI scanner from Philips offers consistent high quality images, improved comfort for patients and gives the hospital a full range of diagnostic equipment on site, available six days a week. It is the only true digital MRI system currently on the market, providing a high purity signal from miniaturised electronics in the coil. These features reduce anxiety for patients as the examination time is reduced and the patient perceived acoustic noise levels are reduced by up to 80%.
Phil Hayward, Head of the Medical Department at Wolverhampton Wanderers commented, “The Wolves medical department is delighted to have set up an arrangement with Nuffield Health Wolverhampton which allows us 6-day a week access to the MRI services at the hospital. The excellent level of service and high degree of professionalism that Nuffield Health offers has streamlined our diagnostics, allowing us access to high quality imaging literally on our doorstep. “ The hospital on Wood Road, Tettenhall, is one of 31 hospitals nationwide which forms part of the not for profit Nuffield Health group. The new MRI suite at the Wolverhampton Hospital Radiology Department forms part of Nuffield Health’s national investment programme, to better meet the needs of patients.
Easy access allows hospital staff to diagnose illness sooner and the digital broadband MR scanner to exactly pinpoint injuries. Karen Pattison, Hospital Director, comments, “High quality imaging is so very important for our doctors and consultants to make decisions on treatment. The scanner will be used help diagnose a number of conditions, from strokes, heart conditions, arthritis and prostate cancer through to sports injuries.” Phoebe Cartwright, Radiology Manager at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton said, “Having the MR scanner onsite is great news for our patients. Before the scanner was installed, patients accessed MRI scans through a mobile service, which was available on certain days of the week. Now that we have our MRI scanner installed permanently on site, it can be used six days a week, giving patients much more flexibility when booking appointments and offer more complex scans in a shorter timeframe.”

Mill Green Designer Outlet Village In Cannock FULL PLANNING PERMISSION CONFIRMED
Pictured: Left-right Tony McGovern, Managing Director Cannock Chase Council, Amanda Milling, MP for Cannock Chase Cllr George Adamson, Leader of Cannock Chase Council, Richard Upton, Deputy CEO, U+I Giles Membrey, Rioja Developments’ Managing Director, Cllr Gordon Alcott, Deputy Leader and Economic Development and Planning Portfolio Leader at Cannock Chase Council
The development of a new premium outlet shopping destination for the West Midlands moved a step closer this week as development partners U+I and Rioja Developments confirmed receipt of full planning permission. The news follows on from Cannock Chase Council’s resolution to grant planning approval for a designer outlet village in December 2015 – a decision that was backed by Greg Clarke MP, the former Secretary of State for the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG). This is the biggest development of its kind in the West Midlands. It will inject much needed investment into the area, provide a huge economic boost and put the area firmly on the designer outlet map. The phased scheme will cost in excess of £110m and will create over 1,200 jobs. Nestled in a valley adjacent to a nature reserve the 26,505 sq m outlet village will provide up to 130 designer outlet stores, new restaurants and around 2,000 car parking spaces within easy access of the M6 and M6 Toll road. Richard Upton, Deputy CEO, U+I, said: “This is a major investment that could generate more than £500 million of socio-economic improvements over the next ten years and create in excess of a thousand jobs, benefitting Cannock and the wider region and putting this outlet in the top five outlet centres nationally. We intend to create a unique experience in factory outlet retailing which will complement the beautiful environment, including a real focus on sustainability.”

Giles Membrey, Rioja Developments’ Managing Director, added: “This is a key stage on our journey to make our vision for the Mill Green development become reality. It’s a unique location in terms of both the commercial opportunity and surrounding landscape. We can now finalise our plans for the scheme before we make a start on site next year.” The area will also benefit from considerable investment in off-site improvements, including the widening of Eastern Way and the addition of much-needed pedestrian crossings. Moreover, Cannock will benefit from a further investment of circa £150,000 for town centre improvements. Mill Green Designer Outlet Village will attract upmarket, premium fashion designer brands not normally found in local town centres and is expected to draw around three million visitors into the area each year. Phase one of the development could start by the autumn 2017, with an anticipated opening in spring 2019. Councillor George Adamson, Leader of Cannock Chase Council, commented: “It is fantastic news to hear that full planning permission has been granted for this development. It will provide a huge economic boost to Cannock Chase District, creating jobs and attracting private sector investment. It will significantly raise the profile of the District with an estimated 3 million people visiting the new Designer Outlet Village.” For further information, members of the public can visit www.millgreenoutletvillage.co.uk or call the Community Affairs team on Freephone 08000 355 872.

Sing for your Heart this Christmas – it’s good for you NATIONAL CHARITY HEART RESEARCH UK IS CALLING FOR CHOIRS
National charity Heart Research UK is calling for choirs, schools, bands, singers and pubs up and down the country to support its Sing for your Heart campaign this winter. Research has shown that singing is good for the heart and that is why Heart Research UK has chosen this as a fun idea for people to take on during the festive period and to raise money for the great work that they do. If you’re a choir, you could book a venue or sing in your local supermarket and donate a percentage of the tickets sales or pass around a collection bucket to raise money to Heart Research UK.
your area together during Christmas week to sing festive songs and pass round a collection bucket. You could host it in the pub, in the car park all wrapped up or on the village green. Heart Research UK doesn’t mind how you organise it or how you raise the money – the choice is yours. The charity just wants everyone singing for their hearts this Christmas and raising money to help fund the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease.
If you’re a school you could turn your annual nativity play into a Sing for your Heart event and ask parents to make a donation or sell tickets. If you’re an individual who loves singing or in a band, why not put on a gig and donate a percentage of the proceeds. If you work at a pub or you’re a regular at your local, why not advertise to host a sing-a-long and get everyone in 14
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2016
It’s so easy to get involved, all you need to do is contact Heart Research UK for your FREE Sing For Your Heart kit, set a date and venue to host your Sing, advertise for an audience with posters in the pack, nominate someone to go round with a collection bucket at the event and then send in the money to them. You can sign up online at www.heartresearch.org.uk/ sfyh or call 0113 234 7474 or email community@heartresearch.org.uk And don’t forget – all money raised locally is spent locally on helping hearts near you.

Cannock Friends of St Giles
25 YEARS OF VOLUNTARY SERVICE TO THE HOSPICE Two committee members of Cannock Friends of St Giles recently received certificates and badges to mark 25 years of voluntary service to the Hospice. Chairman Janette Arrowsmith - who has been involved with St Giles since it first opened 33 years ago - presented the certificates to secretary Lynda Williams and treasurer Trish Mellor at a concert organised by the Friends group. Lyn and Trish were both surprised and pleased to receive their badges - 25 years had passed by very quickly! During that time the small group has organised many events, raising much needed funds for the work of the Hospice and promoting St Giles in many ways. In November the group will decorate a tree at St Luke’s church in Cannock as part of the Christmas Tree Festival. Members of the public visit the church and are able to make donations for any of the groups represented there. On December 11th they will be holding the annual Light up a Life service at 6.00pm at St Luke’s. It is always a very emotional service when all those who wish to remember
the life of a loved one join in a service of celebration and light. This year the Book of Remembrance will be available for viewing in the Lady Chapel both prior to and after the service and Cannock Friends will serve refreshments which are offered free of charge - at the back of the church following the service. Everyone who wishes to join in with this service will be made very welcome. St Giles continues to offer a host of services: in-patient care, day patient and out-patient care, Hospice at Home, bereavement counselling - and so much more. The people of Cannock are always incredibly generous in their support of all that the local group of friends of St Giles does and that support is very much appreciated. Rotary Donates £3000 to Brain Tumour Charity and local Hospices On Wednesday 14th September the Rotary Club of Cannock handed over £3,000 from money raised at their annual golf day held in July. The donations were presented to three outstanding local charities. Club president Harold Bould told the meeting that funds from the golf day had also enabled earlier donations to Rotaries own charity Rotary Foundation and the End Polio Now campaign.
John congratulated the club on its fund raising and said he was impressed by the clubs plans for the rest of the year which includes a large number of interesting social and fund raising events. The evening concluded with John Sayer making a presentation to Club President Harold Bould who was this year’s winner of the clubs crown green bowling competition.
The clubs chosen charities who each received a cheque for £1,000 were: The Brain Tumour Charity, St Giles Hospice and Katharine House Hospice. The club was also delighted to welcome Rotaries District Governor John Sayer who gave an interesting talk to the club members and guests about the future of Rotary and ‘The End Polio Now’ campaign which is now in its 31st year. John outlined that before Rotary started the’ End Polio Now’ campaign some 1,000 cases per day of Polio were reported worldwide however, this year only 23 cases in total across the world have been recorded. He stated that a vaccination programme was ongoing in areas of the world were these 23 cases have been reported in a hope to eliminate the disease completely from the world’s population.

Alison Jackson of the worldwide charity Look Good Feel Better for cancer patients spoke of the free beauty workshops provided locally at New Cross and Stafford Hospitals. There was a great ‘buzz’ with everyone finding the evening informative and interesting an added bonus for Cannock Soroptimists is that a number of the ladies are keen to come along to a meeting and find out more about the club and the organisation. Cannock Soroptimists are preparing for Christmas! But not just for themselves: as in previous years, club members do what they can to provide a better Christmas for some of those who may be in some sort of need this year. They provide Christmas gifts for the women and children who will be living in a refuge run by the Pathway Project for women victims of domestic violence over the festive period. They send along toys, games, clothing, books, toiletries, jewellery - the recipients of the gifts are alwaystouched that there are people thinking of them at this time. President Carole Holdcroft will coordinate the club’s preparation, cooking and serving of a Christmas Dinner in December for those who use the Soup Kitchen in Mill Street Cannock. They fund a large part of this meal too and usually serve over 50 meals, complete with all of the Christmas trimmings – again, this service to members of the community is always appreciated. In lieu of sending cards to each other at Christmas, Soroptimists make donations to their International President’s appeal, held to mark United Nations Day on December 10th. The appeal this year is Educate to Lead - Napal and will help victims of the earthquake in Napal. Our President’s Appeal addresses human rights issues that follow a disaster. The earthquakes in Nepal
were devastating – physically, geographically, psychologically, financially, and economically. The resulting poverty has left women and girls more vulnerable. Human traffickers prey on rural women and deceive them into losing their freedom and human rights. Many have lost their livelihoods and need to find a way to care for themselves and their families – the Soroptimist project aims to alleviate this problem. SI Cannock’s own Christmas Celebration will be held on December 6th at the Barns when they will be entertained by The Folkies, a small local group who provide good, fun music with plenty of audience participation. If anyone would like to donate a gift, funds towards the Soup Kitchen dinner or would like to know more about the Christmas Celebration, more information is available by emailing si.cannock@outlook.com

Cannock Chase ranked top 10 in the country for food hygiene scores SCHEME PROVIDES CONSUMERS INFORMATION ABOUT HYGIENE STANDARDS Cannock Chase is ranked in the top 10 Districts in the country, when it comes to the proportion of businesses that pass food hygiene inspections, according to a recent Guardian report.
The condition of the structure of the premises and the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
Cannock Chase Council, along with all other local authorities in England and Wales, participates in the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. This scheme provides consumers with information about hygiene standards in food premises, at the time they are inspected by local authority officers to check compliance with legal requirements.
How the business manages food safety and the inspector’s confidence that standards will be maintained in the future
A business can be given a rating from 0 up to 5 following a visit by an officer. This is based on how well the business is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law. In particular:How hygienically the food is handled - safe food preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage
18
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2016
Councillor Muriel Davis, Health and Wellbeing Portfolio Leader said “We are delighted to be ranked in the top 10 in the country for our food hygiene ratings; with 99% of the businesses we have inspected being rated at three or better. This is testament to the good work and efforts of our officers and the vast majority of responsible businesses who try hard to ensure the correct procedures are being followed and that all hygiene standards meet legal requirements. We encourage all residents to look out for the black and green rating sticker, which should be displayed in the window of all food businesses.” Ratings can be viewed by going online at www.ratemyplace.org.uk and http://ratings.food.gov.uk/

AFR Security PROTECT YOUR HOME You’re less likely to become a victim of burglary if you have a well-fitted and maintained burglar alarm system. The best type of alarm for your home depends on your personal preferences, your budget, where you live, what your home is like and what level of protection you need. A key consideration is what you would prefer to happen when your alarm goes off. Bells-only alarms make a noise, but don’t contact anyone (such as the police or the homeowner). A speech dialler system meanwhile, automatically contacts you or other nominated friends and family when the alarm is triggered. Alternatively, you could get a monitoring contract, whereby you would pay a company monthly or annually to take action or call the police if the alarm goes off. Costs vary between the different alarm types; you can call AFR Security on burglar alarm costs to find out more about pricing and getting the best deal. Contact Neil at AFR Security now for a free no obligation quote on 01543 277909 or 07971 172212.

Fleas can feed for up to three hours from one site, and can drink up to 140 per cent of their own body weight in blood. Eggs, larvae and pupae can also be carried around the house on the soles of our shoes. Fleas can cause very serious health problems. They are one of the most common causes of distressing skin problems in dogs and cats, and in severe cases smaller animals, particularly kittens can die from anaemia due to blood loss from the feeding fleas. When the heating is turned up or an unused room is disturbed dormant fleas can be activated. Human bedding and clothing does not need to be specially treated; a warm wash will kill eggs and larvae. If you need treatments against Fleas in your home please contact Tim on 07519 613196.

A few tips for your furry friend this festive season WISHING YOU A SAFE DOGGY CHRISTMAS
The festive season can be a strange time for our dogs. Their usual home environment is filled with trees, flowers and other decorations and there are odd noises such as crackers and fireworks. Your routine is likely to change and there may be unfamiliar visitors coming to the house.
and dogs tend to eat tinsel a little like spaghetti - often consuming an entire ribbon of tinsel in one go! Again these are often not especially toxic (even if not particularly nutritious either) but can bunch up and cause blockages or, more worryingly start to work their way through the guts whilst some is still in the stomach, this effectively runs a thread through the intestines and causes a linear foreign body which can be extremely serious! Your dog may also get a nasty shock if they chew through the electrical cable for your Christmas lights!
We have tried to give you a few of the most common Christmas dangers around the home for your dog below. It goes without saying, if in doubt about your pet’s health contact your vet and they will be able to advise you. Food hazards Chocolate, onions, nuts, blue cheese, fruit cakes, puddings and mince pies can all be toxic to dogs. Watch out for turkey bones as these can cause choking, constipation or cause damage to your dog’s intestines.
Christmas trees Most species are low toxicity but may cause a mild gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and/or diarrhoea) if chewed. Pine needles in themselves can get stuck in paws and cause irritation as well as potentially causing irritation or perforation of the intestines if eaten. Vacuum daily and ideally keep plenty of water in the bucket to help reduce the number of fallen needles. Decorations Christmas decorations are designed to look attractive and beautiful; unfortunately this usually means they are also tempting to your furry friends. Whilst not often toxic in their own right they can still cause significant problems if ingested. Baubles will tend to splinter or smash into shards which can cause irritation, perforation or blockages 36
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2016
Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia All of these pretty types of festive foliage are mildly toxic if ingested and can cause vomiting, drooling, diarrhoea to name a few, so should be avoided or kept well out of reach. Batteries Ingestion of batteries is more common at this time of year. If the battery is chewed and pierced it can cause chemical burns and heavy metal poisoning. If they are swallowed whole it is possible they will cause an obstruction. All batteries are potentially toxic so if you suspect your dog has chewed or swallowed a battery speak to your local vet. Presents One area where people can come unstuck is with Christmas presents. We put a lot of effort in hiding away potential problems but then wrap up auntie Flo’s big box of chocolates to place under the tree. Although we can no longer tell what it is... our dogs can! Apart from the irritation of having them unwrap someone else’s present and having diarrhoea in the living room on Christmas day, there is likely to be an emergency trip to the vets needed. Make sure any tasty or tempting presents are placed high enough out of the way so that your dog can’t help themselves.

Helpful hints for your pets this Bonfire night FRIGHTENING TIME FOR ALL OUR PETS
This is a fun time of year for many, but Bonfire night can be a distressing and frightening time for all our pets, not just dogs. Cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and birds can all be affected, and you can really help your pet by ensuring you make them as calm and comfortable as possible.
Walk dogs during daylight hours to avoid them being outside when fireworks might go off, and keep cats indoors at night when possible.
•
Close windows and curtains at night, and put on music or the TV to mask the sound of fireworks.
•
If your pet looks scared, ignore their behaviour unless they are likely to harm themselves. Punishing them or giving them fuss will only make things worse in the long run.
As well as the obvious dangers from fireworks and bonfires, please be aware that some pets can get scared and run off. This can result in your pet suffering serious injuries or getting lost. The law now states that all pets should be microchipped and wear a collar and tag. If the unfortunate does happen then your pet will hopefully get traced back to you.
Small pets and wildlife
According to the RSPCA, 45% of dogs show real fear when they hear fireworks and the noises can be just as traumatising for cats and other animals.
Make sure hutches and cages contain hiding places and secure areas where they can go to feel safe, with plenty of bedding, this will help keep noise out and provide a hiding place.
Help soothe their stress levels, by following these top tips: •
•
38
•
Make sure your pet has somewhere to hide, such as under furniture or in a cupboard, and ensure he or she has access to this place at all times. If your pet goes to hide, don’t try to tempt them out as this can make them more stressed.
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2016
Ideally, bring the hutch inside. If this is not possible, partly cover hutches and other outside cages with blankets so that they have some soundproofing.
If you are having your own bonfire ensure it is nowhere near any pets. Always check underneath a bonfire before lighting as hedgehogs may be hibernating there! Please contact Hednesford Animal Hospital on 01543 878625 for advice or treatment if you are worried about your pet’s health this bonfire night.

JB’s 6 a Side Tournament IN MEMORY OF JOHN BROTHERTON Harrisons Sports & Social Club were greatly saddened when member John Brotherton sadly passed away on the 1st September. John was a fantastic Father, Husband and Grandad and a friend to many, he will be greatly missed by all. John was the Harrison’s FC Groundsmen and was a huge part of the club over the past 10 years. John’s son, Tom organised “JB’s 6 a side tournament”. The tournament was held on Saturday 8th October at Great Wyrley in John’s memory. The day was a huge success with the sun shining, and lots of John’s family and friends attending. All 10 teams played superbly and there were lots of aching legs afterwards.
Everyone went to Harrisons after the game for food and a few hard earned drinks. To Tom’s amazement he has raised a phenomenal £3500 for Cancer Research. Tom said “I cannot believe how many people have donated, I’m still so overwhelmed with the generosity from everyone and I can’t thank you all enough. JB’s 6 a side tournament is going to be a yearly event in memory of my father John if the lads can hack it!”
Chase Arts for Public Places [CHAPS] CHAPS ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED WITH RESPONSE CHAPS has been absolutely delighted with the response for applications for named bricks in Phase 4 - the final phase - of the Mining Memorial located in Hednesford. It was far greater than expected and requests for 501 bricks have been received. This means that it will take longer than anticipated for the bricks to be produced and so CHAPS won’t be in a position to lay them until mid November at the earliest– and that, of course, will depend on the weather conditions. The original plan was to hold a small, private service of dedication early in December but again, the wonderful response has led the committee to review that idea and it is now intended to hold a dedication service similar to those for phases 1, 2 and 3. The date has been confirmed as Saturday 22nd April 2017 at 2.00pm.
40
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2016
A new insert listing the names of all those included within phase 4 will be produced which will fit inside the book “A Lasting Tribute”. Everyone who has purchased a brick will receive a copy of the insert, free of charge. Those who have ordered a copy of the book will receive their phase 4 insert with the book; for everyone else, they will be available at the Dedication Service. The pre-ordered books, containing inserts for phases 3 and 4, will be available for collection on Friday and Saturday 25th and 26th November 2016 from Bella’s Café, Market Street, Hednesford between 10.00am and 3.00pm when members of CHAPS will be present. Mike Mellor, President of CHAPS said “Our thanks go to owners Sarah and Mark Walker for allowing us to use their premises”. Information will be available on the website: www.chaseartsforpublicspaces.co.uk For further information please contact: Mike Mellor, President, CHAPS, 01543 578095 or 07583 655199

Eating out over the Festive Season PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS THIS CHRISTMAS There’s something very special about a perfectly prepared meal, served with panache in beautiful and comfortable surroundings. It can help celebrate in a very unique way, any special time of year. Christmas is of course the most special time of the whole calendar, and eating out over the season, a perfect and traditional way to enjoy the festival with all your family and friends. Caterers, no matter how excellent at other times of the year, still pull out all the stops at Christmas. Special menus are devised. Special meals are created. Restaurants, whether standing alone, or part of pubs, clubs and hotels, are decorated in the traditional, seasonal way. Party bookings are particularly welcome, and special entertainments are put on, to help the party mood go with a swing. There are several good gastronomic ways of marking the coming of this very gastronomic season. You can have a traditional Christmas lunch, most restaurants put these on daily for several weeks before Christmas actually arrives. The menu usually comprises Christmas fare with all the trimmings, with thoughtful additions for those who might just prefer something else. This provides an ideal opportunity to entertain business colleagues, clients, customers, friends or relatives, with an intimate, festive repast. Then there are the evenings. Party bookings enable groups of colleagues, entire departments, whole firms, complete family groups, associations, club members, or just good friends, to gather together and enjoy a memorable evening out. Special menus, seasonal trimmings, discos, bands and groups, are laid on by caterers to please their guests and keep them happy the whole evening through. Party bookings of this sort are usually tremendous bargains and can be about the best value for money in dining out, it is possible to find.
Of course, the very best value for money is wining and dining out on Christmas Day. This is becoming more popular with every passing year. It offers several very real advantages. It relieves at least one member of the family of all the work. It doesn’t require clearing up afterwards. It allows the lonely the opportunity of enjoying this festive meal in company. And because it is prepared by professionals, it is always a meal worthy of the occasion and a joy to eat in itself. Christmas Day menus are well worth the booking. Normally several courses of mouth-watering traditional foods are offered, with one or two luxury alternatives for those with special dietary needs or simply a requirement to have something a little different for once. Diners can be sure too that the wines ordered to accompany the food will be of excellent quality and served at just the perfect temperature. Of course all this costs a little bit more. However, when you think of the service that is provided, not to mention the cooking and clearing away, really the Christmas Day meal is probably the ultimate bargain of all. This year, try a festive meal or two at your favourite restaurant, at some time during the hectic weeks leading up to The Day. Gather a group of friends or colleagues together and book a party meal and entertainment. And if you really want to give mum the very best present of all, book a Christmas Day meal for all the family. That way you can be really sure, everyone you know and love, will have the very best Christmas ever!

November
KEEP YOUR SKIN MOISTURISED WHEN THE LEAVES DRY UP November is the eleventh and penultimate month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of four months with 30 days. November was the ninth month of the ancient Roman calendar, it retained its name (from the Latin novem meaning “nine”) when January and February were added to the Roman calendar. November’s birthstones are the topaz (particularly, yellow) which symbolizes friendship and the citrine, its birth flower is the chrysanthemum. The zodiac signs for the month of November are Scorpio (until November 21) and Sagittarius (November 22 onwards). Some Quite Interesting facts about November •
The Anglo-Saxons called November ‘Blotmonath’ after the blood of slaughtered cattle.
•

•
More domestic burglaries take place in November than any other month.
•

•

•
The push button telephone was invented by the Bell Telephone Company in November 1963.
•
The Leonids meteor shower typically reaches its peak around November 17.
•
“November is the most disagreeable month in the whole year,” (Louisa M Alcott, Little Women).
• November is the month when leaves dry up, change colour and get blown from the trees; the same cold and windy days can also cause your skin to dry and make it prone to damage. Here at The Chase CACI Clinic we are well equipped to help prevent that damage happening. The superb equipment and excellent products we use are all producing outstanding results for our clients.

Competition 3 DIVAS TRIBUTE One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see 3 DIVAS TRIBUTE (Madonna, Cher & Tina Turner) in a spectacular live show at the Robin 2, Bilston, Wolverhampton on Friday 25th November 2016. This dazzling live production celebrates the phenomenal success of three iconic female superstars: Madonna, Tina Turner and Cher. Each extremely unique, these ladies have dominated the world of music, fashion, film and celebrity for over four decades. With powerful live vocalists, gorgeous dancers and a stunning band, the 3Divas show takes us on a nostalgic journey through the careers of these legendary ladies, paying tribute to the songs, the looks and the performances that have earned them recognition throughout the world. First to take to the stage is Cher, played by remarkable impersonator Elly Jarmain. Performing Cher’s greatest hits including the classic “Turn Back Time” and Grammy Award winning “Believe”, the cast of the 3Divas show draw their audience into Cher’s crazy world of enormous hair and flamboyant costumes, all topped off with that distinctive deep voice and dry wit. We then welcome West End performer Karin Bello, who throws herself heart and soul into her role as the incredible ball of energy that is Tina Turner. With the voice, the legs and the dynamic stage presence of Tina herself, Karin leads her dancers across the stage with a strut, a shimmy and a shake to hits such as Simply the Best, River Deep Mountain High and Proud Mary. Finally the 3Divas show reveals their uncanny copycat to the Material Girl herself, Madonna. This final section of the show is based around the Queen of Pop’s sell out tours, with striking choreography and couture costumes based on originals by Gaultier and Givenchy. With hits including Vogue, Like a Prayer and Hung Up, the climax of the 3Divas show reminds us all why Madonna is the biggest selling female artist of all time.

As an example, a recent report in the Daily Express demonstrated how for one client, hypnotherapy helped for their sugar addiction. The report quotes the NHS as advising “Hypnosis is widely promoted as a treatment for various long-term conditions and for breaking certain habits”and continues “hypnosis does seem to have an effect, though scientists disagree about how it works”.

Audi A1
BY ROB TAYLOR
EVERYTHING’S A-OK
Since time immemorial car manufacturers have tailored small hatchbacks to be cheap and cheerful, reserving their premium quality goods for larger models in the range: until now. The newly revised Audi A1 perfects and takes to the masses an idea that has been flourishing for some time: a small car that’s big on quality. BMW has been doing this for over fifteen years with its Mini and for a while other manufacturers have been running to catch up – even Audi. Yet this idea refuses to go away. And, in an ever changing motoring climate, where fuel economy figures, low tax bandings and insurance groupings are considered of paramount importance, the notion of dressing up a little hatchback in a smart suit and bowtie seems more appealing than ever. This 97g/km of Co2 emitting petrol version of the three or five-door premium motor absolutely nails the winning formula and boasts a new three-cylinder engine which promises 67mpg fuel economy, allied to nippy performance and fine road manners.
60
Synonymous with the very best in Teutonic craftsmanship and engineering and now available for a relatively low starting price of £14,315, the Audi A1 is better equipped than most to pull off a conjuring trick that would elude both illusionists and hypnotists alike: to make a small car seem like a big car. But can an A3 ever be distilled down to make an A1 or are its qualities - and those of still larger sibling models - indivisible?
In SE spec there’s alloy wheels, remote central locking, air conditioning, electric front windows and mirrors and a sixspeaker single CD audio system with auxiliary iPod connection linked to a 6.5-inch retractable display. A Sport variant is available if you like more in the way of tech and gadgets and, as ever with Audi, you can spend nearly the basic price again if you tick all the options.
The exterior front-end certainly looks like every other Audi in today’s line-up, displaying soft and simple styling lines that appear crisp and effortlessly contemporary.
There is also the small matter of how well the A1 drives to consider - a task the little super-mini carries off with some aplomb, managing as it does to serve up a ride that does nothing to disgrace its larger brethren. Everything A-OK here, then? Well, yes, assuming you are prepared to drive it like you stole it and rev it until the pistons dance on the dashboard. Out on the road its smooth and responsive 1.0 litre TFSI engine is not particularly torquey, but it’s eager enough when revved and can reach a top speed of 116 mph.
Climb in, sit down and close the door. An everyday and perfunctory operation in most small cars but in the A1, even this is rewarding: the door clasps itself to the bodyshell with a subdued and deftly cushioned ‘thud’. This is the sound of pound notes insulating you from common or garden hatchback penny-pinching. The theme of defying convention continues inside. This is not a small car; there is ample room even when fully loaded; shapely seats, a comfortable driving position, a big boot and fine all-round visibility.
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2016
But the A1 is still a strong performer all-round with direct and precise steering, responsive handling and an image that speaks of refinement, class and taste.

My Dear Kia…
BY ROB TAYLOR
YOU’RE CHISELLED AND VOLUMINOUS
It struck me strongly while enjoying majestic coastal views from the A1, north of Berwick upon Tweed, just how incredibly good the latest Kia Sportage really is. Unsurprisingly I was driving said Sportage at that precise moment, and had been for some time – north of Berwick is for me very northerly indeed, because I’m a Black Country lad who was brought up to believe Manchester was where the map ran out, when ‘up north’ – but until that moment I think I’d only known it in an theoretical sense, and not yet discovered it directly for myself – empirically. I’ve longed held the view that to truly understand a car you have to spend many, many miles at the wheel. The notion that you can decide which vehicle is right for you after a quick test-drive, with the petrol warning light lit, at your local dealership is nonsense. To truly know whether you and a car are compatible takes much, much more: like relationships, you both need to get under each other’s skin; to discover not just petty annoyances but how to forgive them; to flush out pride and aggrandisement and learn to accept it; to uncover deeper qualities, not written about on the surface, which can make all the difference. But since these abstract experiences are really too intangible to express and because 62
this “ode to car” is starting to read more and more uncomfortably like a romance, I’ll skip back to the facts, which can rightly sell the Sportage better than anything else. Kia’s best-selling model in the UK is now in its fourth incarnation. This all-new Sportage now boasts four engines, which have each seen major advancements in fuel economy and emissions: I have here the one most people will buy, the 1.7 litre 114 bhp diesel, which returns 61.4 mpg and releases 119 g/km Co2. Because an engine is at the heart of every car; nothing defines character better. And in this case this Kia benefits enormously from its torquey power-plant – at impressively low revs this four-pot is tractable. Equally it is quiet and refined, requiring only minimal encouragement to get it up to speed, and more it’s more than happy to cruise, so it makes for a very useable motorway tool. It is more than able in urban environments also. The Sportage has always been a wieldy crossover vehicle, owing to a sensible footprint and good visibility. Improvements have been made despite this, by lowering the position of the door mirrors and reducing the thickness of both A- and C-pillars still further. Dimensions remain unchanged on this new model, except for a small almost imperceptible increase in wheelbase – which rear passengers will be grateful for.
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | NOVEMBER 2016
Extras on this Eco ‘2’ model – which costs just £22,050 – gift to you enlarged 17” alloy wheels and a parking camera, to help you avoid scraping them, and the Sportage’s new – according to Kia – “chiselled and voluminous” rear-end. See, I’m not the first to eulogise about this car. I also think its rather handsome from the front as well… [that’s enough car-love – Ed] Inside the cabin there’s significant improvements in quality – and Kia has been outstanding at this for some years, so this is improvement upon already established quality: to my eyes everything fits snugly, every surface feels beautifully tactile and serviceable for every one of the 100,000 miles (or seven years) Kia’s warranty covers for. And as is so often the case nowadays, there’s just too much technology to mention here so here’s my abridged version: you and yours will be kept very safe indeed; very well entertained, in total comfort. The Sportage is just the sort of car to make travelling considerable miles considerably easy: but don’t take my word for it. Pack it to the rafters (bootspace is 491 litres/ 1480 litres with the seats dropped), select a comfy seat setting (there are many), connect your every gadget and widget (buzz acronyms of the moment include: USB, AUX, DAB, LED) and set out to discover one of your as-yet-undiscovered new frontiers. I’m sure if you ask nicely you can persuade your local dealer to trust you with one of his demonstrators.
