Don’t be a slave to Debt
anD higher rate tax payers nearing retirement: Don’t miss out!
I have in the past month been contacted by 3 new clients who are all higher rate tax payers nearing retirement. The one thing they all had in common was the fact that in recent years they have remortgaged and, because of their age, taken a repayment mortgage over a short period of time that has given rise to considerable monthly payments. I must stress at this point that every client I meet has different needs and objectives and the recommendation given to all 3 clients differed considerably to reflect this. The one fundamental parallel is that following our intervention they all felt a huge financial burden had been lifted from their shoulders.
It is important you clear your credit card balance on a monthly basis and if you do, this is a great way of making purchases with an underwritten guarantee from the credit card company that the goods meet the standards you would expect. But if you don’t, the minimum monthly payment merely covers the monthly interest and little else. Over the years I have met clients whose credit card debt has been static for a decade, paying interest rates approaching 20% per annum.
Can you have good debt?
Most unsecured debt, particularly credit cards, I would deem to be bad debt due to the high level of interest charged.
I would argue that currently with mortgage rates at an alltime low and lenders offering 5 year fixed rates below 2% for higher rate tax payers in particular, you can utilise money elsewhere rather than reduce the balance with overpayments.
You can get 0% interest balance transfers however what you find is that a considerable number who have this only make
An example of this is a client who contacted me as he is concerned with how he will manage financially once he retires. He currently earns

minimum payments and do not attempt to clear the balance at the end of the offer period.

a basic salary of £60,000 per annum and receives an annual bonus of £30,000 that he uses to reduce his mortgage balance. He has 3 years left to when he thinks he will retire so in effect he will, over the next 3 years, receive £90,000 in gross bonus which, after tax and national insurance, would give him £52,200 - yes you have read correctly, HMRC will retain £37,800 in tax and national insurance. If he takes the bonus in 3 years’ time he will in effect owe £52,200 less but what if he decided to exchange this bonus in lieu of a pension contribution, how would that work? Firstly he spoke to his employer who was willing to pass on any employers’ National Insurance (NI) saving to his employee. What most people forget is that in order for the employer to pay a bonus of £30,000, he would incur employers’ NI of 13.8% or £4,140. This means that the gross contribution into the pension is £34,140 which over 3
years would give a total contribution of £102,420. If, when he retires, he decides to withdraw this money over a 2 year period, presuming that he remains a basic rate tax payer, he would receive the following: Tax free cash of £25,605. Gross income taxable at 20% of £76,815 which would result in a tax payment of £15,363 leaving net income of £61,452.
Investment returns and interest rates of course have an impact on the illustrated figures and the value of any investment can go down as well as up. For the purposes of the above example I have assumed the pension monies are held in a cash fund and interest is calculated on a 5 year fixed rate mortgage.
Always seek professional advice.
When you add together the tax free cash and net income, the total amount received is £87,057 - compared to £52,200 if he took the bonus payment whilst being a higher rate tax payer. The additional amount received through this little tax exercise is £34,857 - all courtesy of HMRC. What I have not factored into the savings above is the fact that each year he would have reduced his mortgage debt thereby saving interest which, in the first year assuming a fixed rate of 2%, would have been £348 then £696 in year 2 and £1,044 in years 3 and 4 before clearing the balance. So taking this into consideration, the interest cost would have been £3,132, reducing the overall saving to £31,725. This little bit of tax planning for higher rate tax payers is simple and effective.

Need something to do during October half term? Shugborough will be hosting a series of trails all across the estate. Make sure you ask at visitor reception for one of the walks maps. This time of year is the time of the harvest. Shugborough has a spectacular walled garden, full of tasty produce that is used in the tea rooms and can be bought for a small donation. As well as fruit and veg, Shugborough’s gardeners have been working hard planting colourful borders full of flowers for you to stroll through and enjoy. Smell the lavender on the terraces and don’t forget to take photographs of the stunning dahlia glasshouse. During the harvest time, Shugborough’s working farm is preparing for the winter ahead. One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see Tony Christie on Saturday 3rd November at 7.30pm Musician, singer and actor Tony Christie returns to Wolverhampton Grand Theatre on Saturday 3rd November following his appearance in the theatre’s own production of Ladies’ Day in July. We have a pair of tickets to give away to the performance at the Grand Theatre. He is best known for his recording of Is This the Way to Amarillo, a double UK chart success. Having established himself on the working men’s club circuit - a school of hard knocks - Tony’s chart breakthrough came in 1971, when Las Vegas, a Mitch Murray and Peter Callander song made the UK Top 30. His follow up, in April, was another Murray and Callander song, I Did What I Did for Maria that steadily climbed the charts until it made No.2. Later in 1971 his next single was (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, written by American, Neil Sedaka and surprisingly, it only made the lower reaches of the Top 20 in the UK, but was hit all over the world. In 2005 however, it soared to the top of the UK charts, staying there for 7 weeks, after Peter Kay mimed to Tony’s record for the Comic Relief TV show. Over the course of his career, one that includes over forty albums, seventy singles and countless live performances Tony has sung thousands of songs.

SI Cannock & District Annual Summer celebration
Cannock Soroptimists together with family and friends - 80 in total - enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at Mitton Manor, Penkridge, for their annual Summer Celebration. President June Bould wanted somewhere quintessentially English where people could walk, chat, enjoy their surroundings and have a delicious afternoon tea; she was delighted when Elizabeth Gooch MBE, owner of Mitton Manor, agreed that the event could be held there. The gardens are within a 7-acre country garden that was started in 2001 and has been developed from an overgrown wilderness. They are now absolutely beautiful and contain a range of different styles, with formal box and topiary, natural woodland bordered by a stream and wonderful flower gardens with a number of water features and sculptures. The day of the Summer Celebration began with rain - the first we have had for weeks - but the day slowly cleared and everyone was able to enjoy the warmth of the sun as they wondered through the gardens before going into the open sided marquee which had been beautifully set up for afternoon tea. The china was ‘just like Grandma’s’, the jugs of flowers on the tables were so pretty and tea - what a fantastic array of finger sandwiches, scotch egg, pork pie, several other savouries, scones with cream and jam and tiny sweet treats with far too many varieties for anyone to sample them all! And the food just kept on coming, along with that truly traditional English drink, a good, hot cup of tea! Add to that the guitarist and singer Dom and all in all it was a perfect afternoon. President June thanked everyone for going along to make the afternoon so successful and happy, in particular she thanked 10

Soroptimist Jill Gooch [no relation to Elizabeth] who had done a lot of the organising for the event. She asked everyone to join her in thanking Elizabeth Gooch who had been so very accommodating and who had made the whole afternoon possible and presented her with flowers from the Club. So many had never been to Mitton Manor Gardens before but will be sure to visit again in future, information can be found on their website www.mittonmanor.co.uk

Tile Choice will now be working in partnership with George Clarke, architect, TV presenter, campaigner and educator. George is the voice of our new radio adverts and will be making an appearance at one of our stores very soon. George Clarke believes that architecture, art and design should be accessible to all and has the power to transform and enrich lives. George recognises and values the process that enables people to unlock the beauty of where they live. There is generally no place like home, this is the space which allows for creative form and expression that we can all embrace and manipulate. We all have the possibility of experimenting with our environment and in doing so improving the way we live and hopefully learn something new along the way. Some of George’s TV programmes include Old House New Home, Amazing Spaces and Restoration Man. George believes that “Home is the most powerful form of architecture that affects us all, and if you are lucky enough to have a warm and comfortable roof over your head, it is a very special place indeed”. 12
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2018
George aims to challenge the notion that great art and design is only accessible by the few and he tries to shine the spotlight on many disciplines including the more traditional spheres of architecture, art and design. Sharing skills and knowledge whether undertaking a brave restoration or a new build on a budget, he emphasises the value of a team which includes a combination of architect, designer, engineer, craftsman, artists, manufacturer and owner. His tastes and interests are wide-ranging – architecture, painting, photography, furniture, art, clothing, motorcycle and bike design. For him, the vital key is whether they have been designed with passion and integrity. For more information visit his website. With our ever expanding range of tiles which is frequently updated to fulfil not only the latest trends but also covering the classic, traditional styles. The Royal British Legion
Saying Thank You to Women of the War 2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and to commemorate this historic year, The Royal British Legion is leading the nation in saying Thank You to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world. Whilst most of the soldiers on the frontline were men, The Royal British Legion has produced a very special brooch to say Thank You for the massive contribution made by women in the war, and to those women who continue to be such an integral part of the Armed Forces family today. Women not only played a huge role in directly helping the war effort, from being nurses in field hospitals to working in dangerous munitions factories, but the war also helped change women’s place in society and demonstrated that they were the physical and intellectual equal of men. Edwardian women were expected to be mothers, carers and homemakers. But with men leaving to fight in the war, women had to take on the jobs of those who were serving. From 1914, millions took on jobs traditionally held More than 1.5 million women flooded into these industries and others to replace men away at the front. In 1914 just over 2 million worked in factories and by the end of the war it was nearly 3 million.
For the first time, large numbers of women worked in the civil service, business, banks, shops, transport and farming. Many women who had been in solitary occupations prior to the war, such as domestic service, revelled in the “sisterhood” of larger groups. Although when the war was over many women were forced to quit industrial jobs to make way for returning men, their role in the war had fundamentally changed how society regarded them and in 1918 around 8.5 million women first got the vote, following the actions of the suffragette movement. The Women of the War brooch is a stunning piece of jewellery. War, whose names are recognised by CWGC as women serving in the auxiliary units during the First World War. Each brooch comes with a certificate commemorating the life of one of these brave women and also acts as a way of saying thank you to all the women, who often have untold stories, who ultimately went on to change society and women’s place within it. With all profits raised from the sale of the brooches going directly to the Legion and their important work, they also help support the British Armed Forces family today.
The Women of the First World War brooch is available from The Royal British Legion’s official online shop www.poppyshop.org.uk for £29.99 .

We have years of experience, knowledge that can be applied throughout the many services we provide. From residential to commercial, our projects have no limitations and are planned to fit your requirements exactly.
We will be looking at carrying out various projects ranging from £25,000 domestic projects all the way up to £6m developments, with clients / contacts ranging from private individuals through to blue-chip industrial clients, architects and developers. What characterises our offer - whether your business is in private developments and refurbishments, small works or public and commercial new builds - is that our values will remain completely consistent. Our name relies upon the professionalism and attention to detail we exhibited in our own individual businesses. With every aspect of our work this quality assurance is something we take extremely seriously.
It is the policy of 1st Class Developments to provide all our customers and clients with a quality of service and a completed building or product which is value for money, satisfies both their expectations and requirements, and is completed within a reasonable timescale. Private housing extensions, as a key facet of construction in The Midlands, plays a significant role in our workload at 1st Class. For domestic projects we are just as happy to provide our own in-house Architectural designer and engineers as we are to proceed on a design and build basis with a clients’ preferred professionals, but whatever stage your scheme is at we are happy to advise you on the best way to proceed based on your budget and timescales. We firmly believe that keeping clients involved in the development and specification of the building as it proceeds, and as an integral part of the team, is the best way to ensure a successful outcome on completion. In our experience, the best results occur when we are brought in with the client and their appointed architect to discuss designs and layouts at an early stage. Our experience and acknowledged expertise in the design and build sector is of great benefit - both in identifying and resolving problems early and also in ensuring works can commence on site in the most efficient manner. Working in collaboration we can ensure efficient cost controls are maintained and ensure that agreed programmes of work are effectively carried out at every stage - without any nasty surprises. Our in house designer has been involved in the construction industry since 1987 and has been preparing drawings since 1996. When we offer a ‘Design and Build’ package, our designer who specialises in 3D design work will work closely with you our client through the whole process of the works from initial concept through to completion. We also have close contact with structural/consulting engineering practices with whom we have developed a close working relationship and understanding. We are also comfortable to develop a working relationship by teaming up with our clients’ preferred architects and engineers if required.

Hospital Radio Stafford Gets the thumbs up For many people a day in hospital can be a daunting prospect so being able to switch on the radio and hear a friendly voice can make a world of difference. For Keith Hibberts being a hospital radio DJ is all about providing a personal service to help bring a smile to the faces of patients and give them a distraction from their illness. The 69-year old, from Cheslyn Hay, has been volunteering at Hospital Radio Stafford since he retired as a project manager for a communications company. The charity is currently recruiting more volunteers, and Keith says: “It was 12 years ago this year that I decided I wanted to go back into hospital radio presenting as I used to do a programme in the mid-1970s at DDHB (Dudley and District Hospital Broadcasting) but the daytime work got in the way. When retirement reared its head I thought this would be the best way to give something back into the community and I applied to Hospital Radio Stafford and got the post. I love visiting the wards and talking to the patients and getting requests. I meet some lovely people who want to chat and have a song played. I am always surprised by people, like for example one female patient at the age of 76,wants Meatloaf, and one little nine year old who wants a Beatle song,
That’s why I like this job. We must remember that the station is for the patients”. A free phone number is also available for listeners to ring in for requests and we will look in our vast library or in the attic. If we have it we will play it whether it be pop, classic or country and western’’. Keith enjoys playing a wide range of music but his favourite includes Motown and anything by the Electric Orchestra but especially Mr Blue Sky. Hospital Radio Stafford broadcasts to County Hospital, Stoke Hospital, Cannock Chase Hospital and also Katherine House. Anyone interested in volunteering can find out more by visiting www.hrstafford.org.uk or calling 01785 223456

Young brown rats face a wide variety of predators, including owls, foxes, weasels and domestic cats and dogs and most do not live for more than a year. Rats have well developed senses of smell taste and touch. They have an acute sense of hearing, frequently using ultrasound to communicate, and are particularly sensitive to any sudden noise. Rats need to gnaw to keep their constantly growing incisor teeth worn down. They damage woodwork, plastic, bricks and lead pipes, and will strip insulation from electrical cables. Fires can easily be started after a rat has gnawed a cable. Gas and water pipes are also at risk. If you need any treatment against rats in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196. 36

Asters: Stars of the Autumn Garden If one flower embodies the joy of the autumn garden then it must be the Aster, or Michaelmas Daisy to give it its common name. These brilliant bloomers come in a vast array of heights from low mounds for the front of the border to stately, towering giants for the back and in colours including violet, blue, crimson, pink and white. To cap it all there are even asters that bloom in spring! They do, unfairly, have a reputation for getting powdery mildew – white staining on the leaves. This is mainly due to poor growing conditions and only affects some, but not all types: there are mildew free ones that can cope with poor, dry soils as well.
The biggest range of colours and heights comes from the New York asters including low growing ones like the Red Robin, through to 5ft giants. These are the most prone to mildew and good growing conditions are essential. This includes: compost-rich, moist soil and a good dose of fertiliser in the spring. The clumps should be divided regularly in spring and the small sections should be planted around 9-12in / 22-30cm apart to ensure good air circulation. Cut the stems down after flowering and clear away dead leaves and mulch in late winter. The Heather-leaved Aster (Aster ericoides) has tiny leaves like a heather but grows into a 3ft / 90cm tall bushy plant and is covered with masses of tiny flowers in autumn. This one also needs good growing conditions. The New England asters like the tall pink Connie and the equally tall purple Helen Picton are generally free of problems and tolerate drier soils. Earlier to flower and always healthy in our garden is the 2ft 6in / 75cm, Monch with his large purple flowers from late July into October.
4030 STAFFORDSHIRE STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK OUTLOOK| |OCTOBER SEPTEMBER 2018 2018
The Italian Asters, like Violet Queen are low growing mounds of colour from mid-September and are generally trouble free although they do need dividing every three years. Asters aren’t just good for us to enjoy, they also provide a wonderful nectar source for butterflies like the Comma, Peacock, Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell that continue to feed well into October. To see a tall plant of Aster Daybreak (“Octendgloren” to give her the proper Dutch name) covered with butterflies on a sunny October day is such a thrilling sight. Some Asters give great value in the garden from their dark, almost black, glossy leaves and stems: Calliope is the best of these and looks great for months before the masses of small, lavender-blue flowers burst forth in October. She grows to about 4-5ft / 1.2-1.5m tall and spreads to form a sizable clump. The pale violet-flowered Vasterival is similar in habit.
There are some Asters that come from dry, woodlands and these are great low-growing plants for covering the soil under trees or against a north-facing wall or fence. Beware, they do spread! Good ones include Aster schreberi with white flowers and Aster Twilight with pale purple flowers. Asters look great planted with autumn flowering grasses or low growing Ice Plants (Sedums) or even planted on mass for a dazzling display of colour. Oh, and that spring-flowering one? It’s the Alpine Aster and you can grow this little plant from seed – look out for Aster alpinus. Martin Blow

Fundraisers ‘Carry the Load’ for Compton Care A group of friends have been raising funds for a Wolverhampton charity which provides care and support for people living with incurable conditions in a unique way by ‘carrying’ two members of the charity’s staff from Swansea to Wolverhampton without their feet touching the ground.
“We know the staff at Compton carry a load for so many people at their most stressful and sad times, which can be really difficult, so on this occasion we wanted to ‘Carry the Load’ for them. “I am just keeping my Dad’s memory alive in a positive way, whilst at the same time helping out a really caring and important charity.
The challenge saw the group transport Nurse Specialist Debbie Smith and Marketing Manager Grace Lee from Compton Care (formerly Compton Hospice) a total of 140 miles on the back of a tandem, on a stretcher and in a canoe. The Lord Bilston Big Challenge: Carry the Load event was the third in a series of fundraising challenges organised by Brendon Turner to honour the memory of his late father Lord Bilston Dennis Turner who was cared for by Compton when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. Brendon Turner said: “We were really impressed with Compton and the care and dedication they showed to my dad. Six months after he passed away we decided to do a fundraiser, just as a way of saying thank you, and since then we’ve completed three, with the latest being our biggest challenge yet. “We did a cycle ride starting from Swansea, which included taking two members of Compton Care staff in a trailer attached to the back of a tandem, followed by an eight mile hike when we carried them on a stretcher, back on the tandem, and then in a canoe down the River Wye. Then it was back on the bikes at Hay-on-Wye for the final journey back to Wolverhampton.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2018
The group aim to raise £16,000 from the challenge, which would fund the equivalent of 77 visits by Compton Care nurses to patients in their own home, and are still receiving sponsorship money. Compton Care Marketing Manager Grace Lee, added: “I have never met a more determined and inspirational team as the Lord Bilston Challenge team. They pushed themselves to the absolute physical and mental limits, and then some! At times things got really tough, but they refused to give in and their dedication to the challenge never faltered. “The team quite literally carried Debs and I through, and so now because of them, Compton Care will be able to carry even more people through the tough moments. They all did Dennis proud.” To contribute to this year’s challenge, please visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/team-lordbilston1

Brick chair sculpture unveiled in Hednesford Park
A brick chair sculpture has been unveiled in Hednesford Park, nearly 20 years after it was originally donated to Cannock Chase Council. The chair will be a significant addition to the Story Walk events and activities held in the park lead by the Community and Education team throughout the year and will encourage local schools to use it to promote story telling sessions as part of the school curriculum. The sculpture was made by Rosemary Cripps in 1999 whilst she was studying for a degree in Ceramics and Sculpture at Wolverhampton University. Rosemary’s idea was to create a large sculpture for displaying in a public space that could be used by all ages. The chair was made from large raw clay bricks, which were carved into the chair design. Rosemary then had to dismantle the chair piece by piece, hollowing out each brick so that they would not fracture in the high-temperature kiln, then mark them with a unique code and drawing plan, so it could be reassembled once it had been fired. The project was sponsored by Ibstocks Bricks of Aldridge in Walsall, who fired the clay bricks in their kiln and transported them to Cannock Chase Council for storage. Earlier this summer a special foundation was prepared and the sculpture was built using Rosemary’s numbering system and detailed plan in Hednesford Park. The chair unveiling was held on Friday 7th September in conjunction with the libraries ‘Mischief Makers Summer

Reading Challenge’ where children had to complete reading 6 books of their choice during the 6 week holidays. The event included a ‘pie face challenge’ for those who had completed the challenge along with fun craft activities in the library and storytelling of mischief stories in Rosemary’s chair. Councillor Christine Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said “I am so pleased that the chair has been built in Hednesford Park. It will be a great addition to the story telling activities which take place in the park each year. We thank Rosemary for donating the sculpture to the Council.” Rosemary Cripps added “As part of my project in 1999, I wanted to create a large sculpture for display in a public space. I am delighted that my vision is now a reality and that the chair will be used by the local community in conjunction with Hednesford Library. I hope it will give pleasure to visitors to the park for many years to come. I am grateful to have been invited to the event, to see the chair in place and meet and thank some of the people who have been involved in reassembling my chair in the park, almost 20 years since it was created.”
Learn More 4 A - Laurence Dalton English: Why it is more like Science and Maths than most students realise. As a private English tutor I very frequently start working with students who are much better at Maths and Science than English. This is because the brain either typically prefers Maths and Science (or logical, black and white thinking) or English (which leans more towards artistic and creative thinking). When I explain to the students that there are solid rules that they can follow, and actually the way they write in English can actually become very logical, students become a lot more confident. For example, when writing an article or a letter, there are certainly procedures or ‘rules’ to follow. If students consciously try to add these rules into their work at all times it is incredibly difficult for them to not be successful. I often say that students should try and put four of the following in each paragraph when they are writing to persuade: • • • • • • • •
Triples Rhetorical Question Statistics Reliable Quotation Anecdotes Emotive Vocabulary Repetition Personal Pronouns
"Good afternoon Laurence, Just a quick email to let you know that Josh Banner picked up his GCSE results this morning and managed to attain a 4 in English Language and a 5 in literature, which he was really happy with. Many thanks for your help again with Josh without which I think results would have been considerably lower."
Dawn
"We wanted to say a big thank-you for your help in getting Jennifer passes in her GCSE English Language and Literature. We did not give you much time, from February to May! But your structured methodology and positive detailed feedback was exactly what she needed to get her confidence to the point of a pass. The fact that she passed both English Language and Literature (the latter of which her school had advised her to drop as they did not think she would pass it!) shows how effective your help was. We would not hesitate to recommend you to others and would be happy to give a testimonial. We are just so very pleased you took Jennifer through to a pass first time round."
Anna & Richard
In ensuring that these are consistently present in their work students can make sure, when they are writing to persuade, that they are writing in the correct genre. This is, of course, what the examiner is looking for.
I hope that this helps.

Testimonials: "Hi, I thought you’d be pleased to know that Hewd was awarded a 7 in his GCSE English Language - a result we’re delighted with. I am sure he was in line for a 4 or 5 before he came to you for tutoring and for him to achieve a 7 is wonderful. All credit to your tutoring system, which provided detailed feedback at every step and always pushed him to try harder and keep improving."

Lexus LS
NEW EXTERIOR DESIGN
The Lexus LS has always been somewhat of a rarity on UK roads. Ever since it was launched back in 1989 the flagship saloon has nonetheless tirelessly gone about its business for Lexus, quietly refining principle values, quietly laying down the gauntlet. Despite being up against the superlative Mercedes S Class it has stuck to its guns and refused to copy the far more financially successful formula laid down by the Germans. At a time when options for enthusiastic car buyers are dwindling fast, it remains, as ever, a towering example of how and why you need not and should not copy your neighbours. Assuming, of course, that you just happen to live in one of the more affluent areas of Wolverhampton – and are, perhaps, regularly driven to work by a chauffeur – and that your neighbour is in that same boat as well. I include this because a well-spec’d LS costs nigh on £100,000. And that’s why Lexus UK expects to sell only 100 each year. This is a staggeringly low-volume vehicle (compared to the Mercedes S Class: 2500 per year) and thus makes driving it – and being driven in it – all the more exciting. OK, I haven’t actually 62
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2018
been driven in it yet, but maybe one day… The original Lexus LS arrived after 1,400 engineers toiled for six solid years in an effort to build a luxury car that would rival the best in the world. Today, almost nothing has changed. Since then parent company Toyota may have become synonymous with superefficient automation on an industrial scale but in making the LS Lexus has taken a softer, more artisan approach to many facets of both design and execution. The oft-referred to ‘Takumi craftsmanship’ combines the best traditions of Japanese culture and aesthetics with modern design and technology and speaks loudest of this. Indeed, there have been many, many human hands all over this vehicle. I’m immediately impressed by the radical new exterior design: lower, wider and longer than the last, this coupe-like silhouette has nonetheless all the spaciousness of a prestige saloon inside – it is the very best of both worlds. And, looking closely inside, you’ll find a fit and finish that is nigh on otherworldly. The design of the new LS’s interior combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with advanced manufacturing techniques, and it’s reflected in elements such as the soft ambient lighting that makes the armrests appear to float next to the door panels. The driver-focused cockpit wraps you up in a sea of the
finest elements: fine leather, detailed metal and wood accents all add to a welcoming ambience. It is a thoroughly luxurious and modern space even when not in top-of-the-range fourwheel-drive ‘Premier’ spec. There are four trim levels to choose from, but even entry-level cars get a full-bodied suite of safety equipment, dual-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, 20” alloy wheels, an infotainment system complete with a 12.3” display, a host of concierge services and a 360-degree camera system as standard. And this is what this car is all about: the experience, the theatre of driving the sum total of everything that Lexus has to offer us right now. Sit in this car and you know you are sitting on the cutting edge of what’s possible. The ride quality on air suspension (standard except on entry-level models) is peerless and guaranteed to astonish. The 295bhp 3.5 litre V6 has no turbocharger but is boosted by a hybrid system to produce a ‘total system output’ of 354bhp. It powers either the rear or all four wheels and is more than able to hustle what is a decidedly heavy vehicle. Despite its bulk however the LS is accurate and quite composed in long corners. It’s a truly remarkable car. The LS is literally staggering to behold. If only I was one of the 100…

Honda Jazz
THE NEW FUNKY ONE
I can’t remember a Honda Jazz ever looking as funky as this new one. Old as the hills and traditionally a conservative dresser beloved by older demographics, the Jazz nonetheless finds itself well and truly jazzed up in its latest 2018 incarnation. And while it would be overegging it to say that its unveiling at the Frankfurt Motorshow last year created waves throughout the industry, there have been minor ripples felt as far away as Norfolk. It is now Honda’s best-selling car in the UK and I can see why: priced at a come-and-buy-me £14,115 for the entry level S grade vehicle, the Jazz ticks all the boxes for many. The range tops out at £17,155 for the new Sport edition, which features the new 128bhp 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine, and spec is high across the range with base-grade S models fitted as standard with air conditioning, cruise control with speed limiter and dusk sensing auto lights. Mild-mannered it may be but this vehicle is not short on things to shout about – especially in the case of the Sport version I have here.
With a peppy, revvable nonturbocharged engine put through a silky six-speed gearbox, the Jazz Sport makes decent progress both in terms of changing preconceptions and getting you from A to B. Based on the SE grade – which adds front and rear parking sensors, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and 15” alloy wheels – the Sport boasts a thinner front splitter beneath the lower grille, and triplestrake diffuser to the rear bumper – both finished with a sporty red accent line similar to the Civic Type R, LED headlights, front fog lamps, side sill skirts, a tailgate spoiler and gloss-black 16” alloy wheels. The interior features a unique pinstripe pattern on the upholstery and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, all of which are enhanced by orange stitching. Fans of the Civic Type R will be disappointed but, conversely, anyone caught thinking the Jazz is dull will be in for a wake-up call. 0-60mph comes up in 8.7 seconds and that’s not too shabby, but you’re wrong if you get too carried away with the ‘sportiness’ of the Jazz. This is after all but one of its many selling points.
boot and comfortable seats which fold every which way, allowing you to carry tall items. There’s loads of room inside its cabin; it comes in all colours – including the new Skyride Blue Metallic option; it is built (in Britain no less!) more robustly than the average nuclear bunker and has been engineered to within an inch of its life by the finest brains at one of the world’s foremost car producers. Get it out on the motorway and it will perform; drop it into the urban jungle and enjoy the helpful parking tech, the light-steering and ask it to run and run without complaint or problem – and deliver real-world economy of around 50mpg – and it will gladly pay you back tenfold, even at an as-tested price of £17,890. In short, this little car is a joy – even the seven-inch infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use and so is the £600 add-on Sat-nav system– and I’m a near neo-Luddite. Drive it today to re-discover a solid companion with newly added je ne sais quoi. If only I could improve so much with age...
It is instead more importantly still a Honda Jazz: an incredibly versatile and practical car with a 354-litre 01952 321334 | WWW.STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK.CO.UK 63
