Don’t be a slave to Debt

anD higher rate tax payers nearing retirement: Don’t miss out!

I have in the past month been contacted by 3 new clients who are all higher rate tax payers nearing retirement. The one thing they all had in common was the fact that in recent years they have remortgaged and, because of their age, taken a repayment mortgage over a short period of time that has given rise to considerable monthly payments. I must stress at this point that every client I meet has different needs and objectives and the recommendation given to all 3 clients differed considerably to reflect this. The one fundamental parallel is that following our intervention they all felt a huge financial burden had been lifted from their shoulders.

It is important you clear your credit card balance on a monthly basis and if you do, this is a great way of making purchases with an underwritten guarantee from the credit card company that the goods meet the standards you would expect. But if you don’t, the minimum monthly payment merely covers the monthly interest and little else. Over the years I have met clients whose credit card debt has been static for a decade, paying interest rates approaching 20% per annum.

Can you have good debt?

Most unsecured debt, particularly credit cards, I would deem to be bad debt due to the high level of interest charged.

I would argue that currently with mortgage rates at an alltime low and lenders offering 5 year fixed rates below 2% for higher rate tax payers in particular, you can utilise money elsewhere rather than reduce the balance with overpayments.

You can get 0% interest balance transfers however what you find is that a considerable number who have this only make

An example of this is a client who contacted me as he is concerned with how he will manage financially once he retires. He currently earns

minimum payments and do not attempt to clear the balance at the end of the offer period.

a basic salary of £60,000 per annum and receives an annual bonus of £30,000 that he uses to reduce his mortgage balance. He has 3 years left to when he thinks he will retire so in effect he will, over the next 3 years, receive £90,000 in gross bonus which, after tax and national insurance, would give him £52,200 - yes you have read correctly, HMRC will retain £37,800 in tax and national insurance. If he takes the bonus in 3 years’ time he will in effect owe £52,200 less but what if he decided to exchange this bonus in lieu of a pension contribution, how would that work? Firstly he spoke to his employer who was willing to pass on any employers’ National Insurance (NI) saving to his employee. What most people forget is that in order for the employer to pay a bonus of £30,000, he would incur employers’ NI of 13.8% or £4,140. This means that the gross contribution into the pension is £34,140 which over 3

years would give a total contribution of £102,420. If, when he retires, he decides to withdraw this money over a 2 year period, presuming that he remains a basic rate tax payer, he would receive the following: Tax free cash of £25,605. Gross income taxable at 20% of £76,815 which would result in a tax payment of £15,363 leaving net income of £61,452.

Investment returns and interest rates of course have an impact on the illustrated figures and the value of any investment can go down as well as up. For the purposes of the above example I have assumed the pension monies are held in a cash fund and interest is calculated on a 5 year fixed rate mortgage.

Always seek professional advice.

When you add together the tax free cash and net income, the total amount received is £87,057 - compared to £52,200 if he took the bonus payment whilst being a higher rate tax payer. The additional amount received through this little tax exercise is £34,857 - all courtesy of HMRC. What I have not factored into the savings above is the fact that each year he would have reduced his mortgage debt thereby saving interest which, in the first year assuming a fixed rate of 2%, would have been £348 then £696 in year 2 and £1,044 in years 3 and 4 before clearing the balance. So taking this into consideration, the interest cost would have been £3,132, reducing the overall saving to £31,725. This little bit of tax planning for higher rate tax payers is simple and effective.

What’s on trend? At first glance it may seem that the bathroom is the dullest and not the most fashionable room within the home, due to its size and functional purpose. However, it is one of the places where we spend an awful lot of our time.. so why not let your creative juices flow free and turn the smallest room in the house into a sanctuary. Planning a new bathroom is an exciting task, so it is well worth knowing some of the basic principles and tips on how to get the right space for you and a bathroom you will love for years to come.

indigo or amber if you are wanting to make a statement and give your bathroom a bit of character. Feature wallpaper and larger format mosaic tiles in cool white can provide the perfect background for that splash of colour ! If space is key, then ultra-modern, high-gloss modular furniture can give any bathroom a light and spacious look, if it’s falling a bit short of square footage ! Opting for wall-hung units achieves a feeling of openness, as more of the floor is visible, the eye is tricked into selling the space as both bigger and lighter. Slimline wall cabinets are perfect for a narrow room – match them with a compact basin unit for even more storage for your lotions and potions.

This season is set to be marked by the return to the organic and natural, highlighting new and functional designs. So when it comes to bathroom design, the trend sets to be super clean colours, seamless lines and a practical, yet simple arrangement of spaces. Continuity is key to seamless lines and one way to achieve this is the use of one single material for cladding the walls and floors, ensuring smooth flowing lines and textures and is a great way to create the feeling of space (.. if this is something that you are lacking). On the other end of the spectrum and something also to consider is the use of a combination of textures. Being bold is not for the faint hearted, but the juxtaposition of wood and stone is a clever way to incorporate many variations of design. Ceramics, glass and natural stone can also be factored in to the décor to give a truly amazing effect. Clever bathroom lighting needs careful consideration and instead of one main light source, the use of multiple lighting devices highlighting separate areas visually increases the space available. Colour options for decorating purposes are undoubtedly ruled by white, however the classic decoration of black and white is set to be a hit, with the introduction of tones of grey for something a bit more unique. For those who prefer brighter colours as an accent it is better to choose one of the bold natural colours; lemon, emerald, turquoise, blue, 642 STAFFORDSHIRE STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK OUTLOOK || SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER2018 2018

Chrome has been king for some time, with regards to accessories and brassware and recently there has been a definite trend for a more modern metallic finish. Gold is definitely experiencing a renaissance now, but it’s important to set the right tone. Think gentle champagne and rose gold shades, rather than showy orangey tones. Its also important to use metallics sparingly, but with purpose. A border of gold or copper mosaics surrounding classic white tiles behind a basin or bath, or in a shower cubicle, will give the feeling of glamour without veering into tackiness. Whatever option you choose, it’s often the tiles, flooring, accessories and other all-important finishing touches that really bring the dream to life. Carvers stock a wide range of tiles, flooring, paint and lighting solutions which will add unique touches to your bathroom project. Their unique design centre studios have a complete range of modern, contemporary and traditional bathrooms with accessories to suit every budget. The design team can fully manage the project and offer a complete design and installation service, should you require. Finance packages are also available.

After an acclaimed run in London’s West End, Tom Kempinski’s multi award winning play DUET FOR ONE now tours the UK – starring Belinda Lang (2point4 Children, Second Thoughts) and Jonathan Coy (Downton Abbey, Rumpole, Collateral and Endeavour). In this powerful, deeply moving and poignantly funny play, Stephanie Abrahams, a brilliant concert violinist who seemingly has it all, is forced to re-evaluate her life when struck down by an unforeseen tragedy. Faced with a truth too difficult to comprehend she consults psychiatrist Dr Feldmann and through a series of highly charged encounters is led to examine her deepest emotions and finally to consider a future without music. Tom Kempinski’s dazzling play emerges as a gripping, witty and ultimately life-enhancing tribute to the human spirit. SI Cannock & District Annual Summer celebration

Cannock Soroptimists together with family and friends - 80 in total - enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at Mitton Manor, Penkridge, for their annual Summer Celebration. President June Bould wanted somewhere quintessentially English where people could walk, chat, enjoy their surroundings and have a delicious afternoon tea; she was delighted when Elizabeth Gooch MBE, owner of Mitton Manor, agreed that the event could be held there. The gardens are within a 7-acre country garden that was started in 2001 and has been developed from an overgrown wilderness. They are now absolutely beautiful and contain a range of different styles, with formal box and topiary, natural woodland bordered by a stream and wonderful flower gardens with a number of water features and sculptures. The day of the Summer Celebration began with rain - the first we have had for weeks - but the day slowly cleared and everyone was able to enjoy the warmth of the sun as they wondered through the gardens before going into the open sided marquee which had been beautifully set up for afternoon tea. The china was ‘just like Grandma’s’, the jugs of flowers on the tables were so pretty and tea - what a fantastic array of finger sandwiches, scotch egg, pork pie, several other savouries, scones with cream and jam and tiny sweet treats with far too many varieties for anyone to sample them all! And the food just kept on coming, along with that truly traditional English drink, a good, hot cup of tea! Add to that the guitarist and singer Dom and all in all it was a perfect afternoon. President June thanked everyone for going along to make the afternoon so successful and happy, in particular she thanked 10 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2018

Soroptimist Jill Gooch [no relation to Elizabeth] who had done a lot of the organising for the event. She asked everyone to join her in thanking Elizabeth Gooch who had been so very accommodating and who had made the whole afternoon possible and presented her with flowers from the Club. So many had never been to Mitton Manor Gardens before but will be sure to visit again in future, information can be found on their website www.mittonmanor.co.uk

Staffordshire Outlook Raises £915.00 for French Bulldog Saviours We are happy to announce that Sharon Caldwell (Staffordshire Outlook Director) and Michelle Caldwell, completed their first triathlon and lived to tell the story! On the 3rd June 2018 on a very warm Sunday morning we travelled to Alderford Lake, Whitchurch. We both cannot believe after months of hard training that we completed the triathlon which consisted of a 0.6 mile open water swim, 28 mile cycle and 6.5 mile run, and got the medal! The only thing that kept us going was the fact that we were doing this event for a great charity, The French Bulldog Saviours. We are very proud to of raised £915.00! Sharon says “We are so happy to have raised this amount for such a great charity and this was a massive achievement for us both”. We want to personally thank some of the businesses and individuals who have generously sponsored us, and helped us to raise this amount, without you we wouldn’t be as proud as we both are!

1st Class Developments Here at 1st Class Developments we aim to tackle problems better than anyone else. We have years of experience, knowledge that can be applied throughout the many services we provide. From residential to commercial, our projects have no limitations and are planned to fit your requirements exactly.

We will be looking at carrying out various projects ranging from £25,000 domestic projects all the way up to £6m developments, with clients / contacts ranging from private individuals through to blue-chip industrial clients, architects and developers. What characterises our offer - whether your business is in private developments and refurbishments, small works or public and commercial new builds - is that our values will remain completely consistent. Our name relies upon the professionalism and attention to detail we exhibited in our own individual businesses. With every aspect of our work this quality assurance is something we take extremely seriously.

It is the policy of 1st Class Developments to provide all our customers and clients with a quality of service and a completed building or product which is value for money, satisfies both their expectations and requirements, and is completed within a reasonable timescale. Private housing extensions, as a key facet of construction in The Midlands, plays a significant role in our workload at 1st Class. For domestic projects we are just as happy to provide our own in-house Architectural designer and engineers as we are to proceed on a design and build basis with a clients’ preferred professionals, but whatever stage your scheme is at we are happy to advise you on the best way to proceed based on your budget and timescales. We firmly believe that keeping clients involved in the development and specification of the building as it proceeds, and as an integral part of the team, is the best way to ensure a successful outcome on completion. In our experience, the best results occur when we are brought in with the client and their appointed architect to discuss designs and layouts at an early stage. Our experience and acknowledged expertise in the design and build sector is of great benefit - both in identifying and resolving problems early and also in ensuring works can commence on site in the most efficient manner. Working in collaboration we can ensure efficient cost controls are maintained and ensure that agreed programmes of work are effectively carried out at every stage - without any nasty surprises. Our in house designer has been involved in the construction industry since 1987 and has been preparing drawings since 1996. When we offer a ‘Design and Build’ package, our designer who specialises in 3D design work will work closely with you our client through the whole process of the works from initial concept through to completion. We also have close contact with structural/consulting engineering practices with whom we have developed a close working relationship and understanding. We are also comfortable to develop a working relationship by teaming up with our clients’ preferred architects and engineers if required.

District scoops six prestigious Green Flag Awards for the second year Cannock Chase Council has retained its top performing District Council status in the West Midlands, after scooping Six Green Flag awards for the second year running. Green Flag Award winners were revealed on 17 July 2018 nationwide, and Cannock Park, Elmore Park, Ravenhill Park, Castle Ring, Stile Cop Cemetery and Hednesford Park all exceeded the strict criteria required to be the best public open spaces in the UK.

This award is testament to the hard work put in by the Council’s parks officers, staff, community groups and volunteers keeping the parks and green spaces clean, tidy and well maintained has always been appreciated, but to win six awards alongside that for a second year is excellent.”

The Districts parks were six of 1650 parks and green spaces that received a prestigious Green Flag Award which is the mark of a quality park or green space, and put Cannock Chase as the top performing District in the West Midlands. This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. Councillor Christine Mitchell Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded six green flags for our parks and green spaces in Cannock Chase, for the second year in a row.

Rugeley Fireplaces & Stoves Established since 1989

Rugeley Fireplaces & Stoves have been established since 1989 so we believe we are now the longest trading fireplace retailer in Lichfield, Cannock, Burntwood & Rugeley. Emma Chadbourne runs Rugeley Fireplaces & Stoves with Husband Darren. Julie and Kath also work in the showroom. Kath is our longest serving team member - she has been with us since 1989! We have between us nearly 100 years’ experience of Real fires and their restoration to the most up to date technology offering efficiencies of almost 100% (gas) almost 90% (Wood). In fact the most efficient fires to date in the world are on display here, at Rugeley Fireplaces & Stoves. We specialise in clean burning stoves. All styles catered for from inset minimalist designs that fit in the wall, freestanding stoves to sit in and opened up chimney - to the ultra-modern wood stoves which are pieces of furniture in their own right. All fuels too... gas, wood, electric and smokeless coal.

Built-in fan system (optional) If desired Unica-2 can be fitted with a powerful ventilator in order to accelerate the distribution of convected heat throughout the room. Setting of the ventilator, ambient lighting and naturally flame pattern are all easy to adjust with the remote control supplied.

We have a little bit of everything in the showroom, hole in the wall, inglenook freestanding, budget packages, freestanding convectors for kitchen diners for example and the best(in our view) quality cast iron stoves which have a huge 25 year warranty.

Ambient lightning effect (optional) A revolutionary feature is the integrated ambient lighting under the burner bed that creates an extra glow effect (optional). Remotely controlled light intensity can be adjusted in accordance with your wishes and gives the fire an extra feature.

Darren is a Gas Safe installer and we also have four more teams who have been vetted by Darren, who we recommend. Fitters are recommended on merit.

We don’t just have stoves though. Fireplaces and fires are on show too. We selected a small handful of British gas, electric and real fire manufacturers whom we trust for their quality and longevity to showcase. We also employ marble / stonemasons and a couple of cabinet makers for our exclusive made to measure fireplaces. We know who makes the best quality fires, or the best ‘value for money, Stone that doesn’t arrive full of chips, or which supplier is willing to alter sizes etc, we are the experts! We are proud to unveil the new Unica 2-90 by Bellfires. These inset gas fires were specially developed for fast and simple modernisation of existing fireplaces. The integrated ambient lighting for an extra glow effect is an innovation. The minimal built-in depth of just 35 cm allows Unica-2 gas fire to fit into almost any situation. If desired, this gas fire can be fitted with a black ceramic back wall, which gives it a more intense look. 26

Asters: Stars of the Autumn Garden If one flower embodies the joy of the autumn garden then it must be the Aster, or Michaelmas Daisy to give it its common name. These brilliant bloomers come in a vast array of heights from low mounds for the front of the border to stately, towering giants for the back and in colours including violet, blue, crimson, pink and white. To cap it all there are even asters that bloom in spring! They do, unfairly, have a reputation for getting powdery mildew – white staining on the leaves. This is mainly due to poor growing conditions and only affects some, but not all types: there are mildew free ones that can cope with poor, dry soils as well.

The biggest range of colours and heights comes from the New York asters including low growing ones like the Red Robin, through to 5ft giants. These are the most prone to mildew and good growing conditions are essential. This includes: compost-rich, moist soil and a good dose of fertiliser in the spring. The clumps should be divided regularly in spring and the small sections should be planted around 9-12in / 22-30cm apart to ensure good air circulation. Cut the stems down after flowering and clear away dead leaves and mulch in late winter. The Heather-leaved Aster (Aster ericoides) has tiny leaves like a heather but grows into a 3ft / 90cm tall bushy plant and is covered with masses of tiny flowers in autumn. This one also needs good growing conditions. The New England asters like the tall pink Connie and the equally tall purple Helen Picton are generally free of problems and tolerate drier soils. Earlier to flower and always healthy in our garden is the 2ft 6in / 75cm, Monch with his large purple flowers from late July into October.

30 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2018

The Italian Asters, like Violet Queen are low growing mounds of colour from mid-September and are generally trouble free although they do need dividing every three years. Asters aren’t just good for us to enjoy, they also provide a wonderful nectar source for butterflies like the Comma, Peacock, Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell that continue to feed well into October. To see a tall plant of Aster Daybreak (“Octendgloren” to give her the proper Dutch name) covered with butterflies on a sunny October day is such a thrilling sight. Some Asters give great value in the garden from their dark, almost black, glossy leaves and stems: Calliope is the best of these and looks great for months before the masses of small, lavender-blue flowers burst forth in October. She grows to about 4-5ft / 1.2-1.5m tall and spreads to form a sizable clump. The pale violet-flowered Vasterival is similar in habit.

There are some Asters that come from dry, woodlands and these are great low-growing plants for covering the soil under trees or against a north-facing wall or fence. Beware, they do spread! Good ones include Aster schreberi with white flowers and Aster Twilight with pale purple flowers. Asters look great planted with autumn flowering grasses or low growing Ice Plants (Sedums) or even planted on mass for a dazzling display of colour. Oh, and that spring-flowering one? It’s the Alpine Aster and you can grow this little plant from seed – look out for Aster alpinus. Children Take Over Market… Penkridge Market will be allowing children to have the ‘run of the show’ on Sunday the 30th September, when they host a fantastic Children’s Market. The new event, which was held for the first time in April 2017, proved so popular with the public, the owners of the market have now decided to hold it as a bi-annual event. The new Market will be entirely dedicated to children, with over 60 stall holders anticipated, selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes to toys and handmade crafts. The majority of stalls will also be undercover in the indoor market, making it a great day out whatever the weather.

on. Thousands of people attended and both the parents and children seemed to really enjoy it. Not only could parents find great products at amazing prices, but there was plenty to keep the children entertained as well, so it felt more like a fun day out, rather than dragging the kids around the shops. I think anything that makes parents lives easier is much appreciated.” And Kate has certainly thought of everything to keep the children amused. There will be a children’s entertainer on hand to ensure the children are constantly captivated, with his magic tricks, balloon modelling and Punch and Judy shows.

There will be plenty of activities to keep the children amused, including a petting farm, fire engine, donkey rides and a fun fair.

Roger Dennis will be bringing his model land rover along and if the children still have lots of energy to burn, there will be a bouncy castle, slide and fun fair.

The event will run from 10am to 3pm, and with free admission for children and only £2 for adults, it’s a fantastic value day out for all the family.

If you prefer a more calming activity, the ‘Farm on Wheels’ will be there with lots of animals to meet and rabbits to cuddle.

Kate Kingsley, who was the brain child behind the event said:

There will be a free craft area, where children can have a go at making paper flowers and their own puppets to use in the Market’s very own puppet theatre.

“We were delighted by the response we had to the event last year, so have decided to hold it twice a year from now

Wasp Facts by Penkridge Pest Control Ltd The sting of a wasp should wear off within 24 hours but for a small minority of people the venom in their sting causes anaphylactic shock which can be fatal. Wasps can sting over and over again. Adult wasps mainly feed on nectar, but the majority of their time is taken up by foraging for food for their carnivorous young, mostly insects or spiders. This can be great for our gardens as they eat the garden pests.

Wasps make nests from paper. They chew up strips of bark and spit it out again to form a rough paper. Some wasps make nests in basements, sheds or dark, cool places. A queen starts a new colony each spring. She raises a few worker wasps first to make the nest larger and bring food. Then she starts laying eggs. A colony can grow to 50,000 wasps in one summer. In the winter all the wasps die except for a few new queens. The new queens spend the winter in an old log or burrow. In the spring, they make new colonies. If you need any treatment against wasps in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196. Wasp removal is just £40.00. We do not charge any extra for weekends or evenings. 32 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2018

Brewood 10KM (aka Woggle) is back for a 5th successive year!

The month of September is the month when runners get back into serious training and competition mode after their summer break: so, what better than to enter the Brewood 10km race? Now in its fifth year, it has been transformed from a fun run attracting around 50 runners from the local community to a fully marshalled, timed and measured race with over 200 participants. This doesn’t mean that the race has lost its family feel and atmosphere, there are still homemade cakes at the end for the hungry runners and great support from locals on the route.

However there is a serious side to the run as it forms part of the Brewood Scout’s fundraising campaign to build a new Scout Hut. The old hut has been earmarked for demolition and is lacking in modern facilities. The Brewood 10km together with its sister event – The Brewood Cycle Challenge have now become established events on the fundraising calendar. Event organiser – Beccy Jones-Reading, herself a London Marathon runner, commented: “The success of the Brewood 10km has been a major contributor to our fundraising calendar and we are very pleased with the growth in runner numbers

each year. We are very thankful that we have some fantastic volunteers who tirelessly work to make the event run as smoothly as possible”. The run takes place on Sunday 23rd September, starting from St Dominic’s Grammar School in Brewood. There are children’s races at 9am for under 8’s and under 12’s with the main event starting at 10am. Entries are open via Run Britain: contact: www.brewoodwoggle.com or our Facebook page for more information. We are also looking for marshals, if you can help, please let us know.

The route takes you through the beautiful countryside around Chillington Hall before weaving towards the village centre via the killer Dean Street hill. The race attracts serious runners and newcomers alike as the route is mainly flat and fast and the finish attracts a carnival type atmosphere with runners finishing to applause by onlookers in the village square. 40 24 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2018

Fundraisers ‘Carry the Load’ for Compton Care A group of friends have been raising funds for a Wolverhampton charity which provides care and support for people living with incurable conditions in a unique way by ‘carrying’ two members of the charity’s staff from Swansea to Wolverhampton without their feet touching the ground.

“We know the staff at Compton carry a load for so many people at their most stressful and sad times, which can be really difficult, so on this occasion we wanted to ‘Carry the Load’ for them. “I am just keeping my Dad’s memory alive in a positive way, whilst at the same time helping out a really caring and important charity.

The challenge saw the group transport Nurse Specialist Debbie Smith and Marketing Manager Grace Lee from Compton Care (formerly Compton Hospice) a total of 140 miles on the back of a tandem, on a stretcher and in a canoe. The Lord Bilston Big Challenge: Carry the Load event was the third in a series of fundraising challenges organised by Brendon Turner to honour the memory of his late father Lord Bilston Dennis Turner who was cared for by Compton when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. Brendon Turner said: “We were really impressed with Compton and the care and dedication they showed to my dad. Six months after he passed away we decided to do a fundraiser, just as a way of saying thank you, and since then we’ve completed three, with the latest being our biggest challenge yet. “We did a cycle ride starting from Swansea, which included taking two members of Compton Care staff in a trailer attached to the back of a tandem, followed by an eight mile hike when we carried them on a stretcher, back on the tandem, and then in a canoe down the River Wye. Then it was back on the bikes at Hay-on-Wye for the final journey back to Wolverhampton.

42 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2018

The group aim to raise £16,000 from the challenge, which would fund the equivalent of 77 visits by Compton Care nurses to patients in their own home, and are still receiving sponsorship money. Compton Care Marketing Manager Grace Lee, added: “I have never met a more determined and inspirational team as the Lord Bilston Challenge team. They pushed themselves to the absolute physical and mental limits, and then some! At times things got really tough, but they refused to give in and their dedication to the challenge never faltered. “The team quite literally carried Debs and I through, and so now because of them, Compton Care will be able to carry even more people through the tough moments. They all did Dennis proud.” To contribute to this year’s challenge, please visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/team-lordbilston1

Tettenhall College Take a Closer Look Tettenhall College is an independent day and boarding school for 2-18 year olds situated in the picturesque village of Tettenhall on the Staffordshire/Shropshire border. We provide an exceptional learning environment with the focus on individual potential in an inclusive, vibrant community. The emphasis is on an education that develops the whole person both in and beyond the classroom with exceptional extra-curricular opportunities that complement rigorous academic standards. Academically, results are consistently high and the School was placed 365th in the Times Good Schools Guide in 2017, over two thirds of sixth form pupils achieved top grades of A*, A or B while 50 per cent of the Year 11 pupils achieved 9 or more GCSE A*-C grades; 27% per cent of all grades were at the top level of A*or A. Life skills and preparation for life beyond school are important elements of the educational offering here and this permeates from Nursery through to Sixth Form. It is especially apparent in the new 6th Form Centre with dedicated facilities for independent study and recreation to support older pupils in the transition to higher education and employment. Pupils consistently achieve beyond expectations, leaving as well-rounded, confident young adults ready to face the challenges ahead. Many continue their education at top universities, with alumni at such places as Oxford, Cambridge, Bath and Warwick. Others have earned places at specialised institutions including RADA, or prestigious industrial placements with renowned businesses. The School runs an extended day programme which challenges and stretches pupils in a wide range of opportunities, giving them as broad and varied an education as possible. The wide array of extra-curricular options and sports – from rock climbing to engineering, business enterprise to dance – ensures that everyone will find their niche and grow in confidence. A proud tradition and ethos coupled with a forward thinking modernity sets Tettenhall College apart. Time honoured, listed buildings standing alongside contemporary architecture provides an apt visual representation of the school personality. 44

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2018

The School has come a long way since its foundation over 150 years ago by local industrialists originally with 15 boys and a cow (to supply the boys with milk). Yet the traditional values and the wonderful historic setting remain the same. This is a secure, happy environment and pupils and staff are staunchly proud of their School. For potential newcomers this is an exciting time to join us as development plans come to fruition. New multi-purpose sports pitches, squash courts and study facilities as well as refurbished boarding houses signal a new chapter in our history. Our Open Days are a perfect way to come and see the School and our facilities as well as meet our staff and pupils. You will be shown around the school by one of our pupils and there is plenty of opportunity for you and your child to interact with members of staff and find out more about everything that we offer. Our next whole school open morning will be held on the 29th September 2018. We will be conducting tours of the School starting at various times between 10.00 and 12.30. Depending on the age of your child, your tour will take place in either Preparatory School or Senior School. We also hold Experience Afternoons for children. Our next Experience Afternoon for Years 5 and 6, will be held on 10th October 2018 from 2pm until 4pm and will be based around Science. This is an opportunity for current Year 5 and 6 pupils who are moving to Year 7 to experience an afternoon in Senior School. It is open to all pupils in these year groups who are looking at the next step in their education and is designed to make senior school a less daunting prospect for your child.

Cannock Chase Council

Good Junior Citizen awarded to local school children Three children from Gorsemoor Primary School in Heath Hayes have received a Good Junior Citizen award from Cannock Chase Council. The award was presented at the school assembly last month to Elle Meeson, Keeley Warren and Travis Greensill for their litter picking in Hednesford Park after school. Dallas Greensill (Travis’ older brother) also received an award. The Good Junior Citizen Award aims to recognise the positive contributions that children aged 11 and younger are making to their local community.

The Good Junior Citizen Award recognises the positive contributions young people (aged 11 years and younger) are making to their local community. We are looking for individuals or groups of young people that are demonstrating a high degree of commitment, dedication and/or initiative to work or projects, both inside and outside school - making improvements to the environment and the community they live in. Find out more about nominating a person/group for a Good Junior Citizen Award here: https://www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/residents/ environmental-health/good-junior-citizen-award

Councillor John Preece, Portfolio Leader for Environment at Cannock Chase Council, said “I was delighted to award these children for picking up litter in Hednesford Park. Litter is an eyesore to everyone, young or old. It costs taxpayers in England and Wales over £450 million to clear up more than 30 million tonnes of litter. As well as having a big impact on the environment.

These children are a shining example of Good Junior Citizens who have taken pride in where they live and made a positive contribution to the community. They should be very, very proud of themselves.”

Orient Express

Chairman Sheila welcomed new members Angela Movius, Sue Friend and Val Beale; and Bill Devitt our speaker who bid us to jump on board for a tour on the Orient Express! In 1825, Pullman, an American engineer, entered a steam engine competition and designed a train carriage with convertible seats which became beds at night, and could be used for workmen to sleep on the job! Following the use of one of his carriages to carry President Lincoln’s coffin to its resting place over 1065 miles away, and the subsequent publicity, Pullman became much sought after and his carriages were used for the Paris to Constantinople railways. As airlines started to affect the viability of train travel some of these carriages and routes became inoperative. Bill was engaged by James Sherwood in the 1980’s to reconstruct and renovate carriages for the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express; the original budget being £450,000: but it eventually running to 16 million! The train now runs regularly from Paris to Venice, and a connecting train from London to Folkestone. Bill shared memorabilia from his trips on the Orient Express that included slippers, menu cards, a leather stationary wallet, and toiletries, all with the embossed logo. Membership secretary Barbara Bowman proceeded to explain how the Data Protection Act would affect the Club; and asked members to agree by email to the Club keeping 54 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2018

their records and using their photographs purely for associated use. Pauline Parlane was thanked for hosting a very enjoyable Strawberry Tea at her home promoting friendship, and the opportunity to chat in the sunshine. Chrissy invited members and guests to Tutbury Castle on 2nd October for afternoon tea and audience with Curator Lesley Smith. Meetings are held at The Chase Golf and Country Club on the first Thursday of the month at 12 noon. Guests and prospective new members are welcome.

Four Seasons: Creating a Home From Home Growing old, needing help to care for ourselves and keeping our independence are concerns we’ll all face at some point in our lives. For many, this can mean moving home to find that level of care and support. At Tudor and Windsor House, we know that moving home is an emotional and challenging time at any age, even more so in later life. Our ‘Home to Home Promise’ helps makes this transition as easy and comforting as possible. Before a resident moves in, we get to know what and who are important to them and their needs. Their favourite foods, activities, hobbies they wish to continue and new things they want to try. So their care is focussed on them from the moment they arrive. Our homes are situated in the communities our residents grew up in. They run activities ensuring residents stay young at heart, keeping in touch with the community they have always been a part of.

Jacky Reed, Managing Director said: “Understanding our residents’ needs is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that quality care is about more than supporting a person’s physical needs but knowing and making sure a person is enjoying experiences that are special to them. “Our Quality of Life Programme allows us to log and act almost immediately upon every comment from residents, relatives, carers and professional visitors about the experience and care we provide. It’s all linked to our quality assurance programme giving you peace of mind.” Visit www.fshc.co.uk for more information.

SI Cannock & District Your Body, Your Rules

Cannock Soroptimists are helping local schools to address the issue of sexting: the sending and receiving of nude pictures and sexually explicit text messages, something which is increasingly becoming normal among teenagers. Often, the youngsters don’t realise they may be acting illegally and that they could face police action. Soroptimists have provided training for pupils and staff of 5 High schools - Cardinal Griffin Catholic College, Staffordshire University Academy, Cannock Chase High School, Kingsmead School and Chase Terrace Technology College - on the risks, both legal and emotional, of sending naked or near naked images. The male and female students, who will be Y12 and Y13 from September, will take on the role of Ambassador within their schools for the project known as ‘Your Body, Your Rules’. Soroptimist Jackie Prince who organised & facilitated the training said “Media reports regarding the increase in young people sending indecent images of themselves using their mobile phones are very concerning. As an organisation we wanted to develop a training programme where we could provide knowledge to young people who would become ambassadors in their schools, offering help & support to their peers. The ambassadors proved to be inspirational young people who were enthusiastic and innovative in their ideas of how to deliver this message.” The training workshop was held at Cannock Chase Civic Centre and was supported by local community police and the Deputy Police Crime Commissioner. As well as hearing from professionals about the legalities of sexting, the students discussed ways of taking the issue back to their school and

58

facilitating the sharing of information. It was funded by a grant from Midland Chase Region Soroptimists. Cannock & District S I President June Bould said: ‘The training day was fabulous. The students all had a thirst for knowledge and now feel empowered to make a difference in their own schools. We are really pleased that so many schools saw the importance of this training and wanted to be involved. I was proud of all members of the club who pulled together to ensure the success of the day - their refreshments proved a big hit with everyone there!’ Part of the training was delivered by Gareth Cheesman of Acet UK who worked with Soroptimist Jackie to plan the day. He was really impressed by the maturity and positive attitude of the group who made real headway into planning how the project would be delivered within their own schools. The ideas the young people had for this were varied and creative and included an internal email set up for pupils to request information, a ‘hot desk’ where pupils could go to talk, role play presentations in assemblies - and so much more. There will be a further training morning in September when plans for project delivery within the schools will be finalised; the Ambassadors will continue to gain any support needed from school staff and Soroptimists as the project is monitored over the next academic year. More information about the work of the Cannock club, along with dates for meetings for the coming year can be found on their website: www.sigbi.org/cannockand-district; on their Facebook page at www.facebook. com/SICannock; or on their twitter account @sicannock

Learn More 4 A - Laurence Dalton Introducing me: My name is Laurence Dalton and I am a private English tutor working locally. I have worked as a qualified English teacher, Head of English, Head of English GCSE’s and a GCSE examiner - so the experience I offer my students is very productive indeed. I hope that my advice that I will provide in these editions will help your child in their educational journey. Attention All Secondary School Students: Know Your Commas! Using commas accurately in all work across subjects is so important as commas allow you to demonstrate to the examiner that you can construct a sentence accurately. As an English teacher, I am very aware of the problem that students have with commas. It is such a shame as this really does have a tremendous impact on the level that the student will gain in assessments and GCSE examinations.

Testimonials: "Hi Laurence, We definitely feel you played a big part in her success so thank you. It’s such a great service you provide and we may well be requiring your services again in a couple of years for our son."

Jo and Keith

"Laurence, I’m super impressed with Lydia today! We’re very proud parents and we wanted to thank you for all of the hard work you put in. We know you go above and beyond and it shows!"

Kelly and Andrew

" Hi Laurence, You have managed a minor miracle turning Alice round from a D grade student to an A grade student."

Steve

The most typical problem that students struggle with is ‘comma splicing’. Comma splicing is when a comma is used incorrectly in a sentence. For example: ‘I had such a lovely day today, we must do this again some time’. This is incorrect because a comma is being used here in between two clauses that could actually make sense by themselves as independent sentences. DOUBLE STRIPES IN BLACK AND WHITE West Midland Safari Park is celebrating the arrival of its second ever baby Grévy’s zebra born within a month of the first and this time, it’s a boy! After 13 months of pregnancy, the stripy youngster was born during the early hours of Sunday morning and keepers were delighted to find the adorable foal already steady on his feet within an hour. Born to first-time mum Montana and now second-time dad Quigley, the foal spent his first day on the Safari getting used to his surroundings and meeting some of the other residents, including a very inquisitive giraffe! The male foal joins his half-sister Grace, who was born less than three weeks ago on 26 July to mum Akuna and dad Quigley. Although she is only 17 days older, the young female has already made an impression at the Bewdley attraction and has been busy showing her younger brother the ropes. Lauren Goodman, African Ungulates Keeper, said: “We were delighted to discover that we had another addition to the Grévy’s zebra family over the weekend. He joins his half-sister, Grace, on the African Reserve and both are full of energy whilst exploring their new home. First-time mum, Montana, who came from Poland Zoo, had been looking very uncomfortable over the past few days, but she foaled with no problems at all.” She continued: “This is not only great news for the Park, but also for the Grévy zebra as a species. With only approximately 3,000 left in the wild, they are classified as ‘endangered’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. We will take great pride in watching both of our new additions grow up over the coming months.” Although the newborn is yet to be named, keepers will be choosing a name beginning with ‘G’, as all babies born at the Park in 2018 will begin with this letter.

The herd of Grévy’s zebra can be seen in the four-mile Safari Drive-through included in the standard admission charge of £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children aged 3-15 and £22.00 for concessions. Children under the age of three years are admitted free of charge. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. Further information and discounted tickets are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. Nissan Leaf

BY ROB TAYLOR

QUIET & COMFORTABLE

Let’s be honest, if you had to compile a list of the most exciting and memorable car names from history the Nissan Leaf wouldn’t be on it. Arresting examples like Cobra, Mustang and Stingray live long in memory, effortlessly conjuring up super-cool images of sexy metal. Even when you move away from sports cars, towards more run-of-the-mill everyday boxes, you can do better. However, none of this really matters once you pass a certain point in your life: a time when necessity creeps in and you realise what really matters. First and foremost and for all of us I’m sure, this has to do with our ability to sustain life. For too long motorists have viewed the cost of motoring as being limited to the price they pay at the pumps, but there’s a greater cost looming. So, as responsible citizens of Mother Earth, shouldn’t we, when technology makes itself ready and affordable, mitigate our carbon footprint a little? Let’s not kid ourselves: it’s not the principle that stops most of the 30-odd million motorists in this country from buying an electric 62

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2018

vehicle, it’s the prohibitive cost and realities of day-to-day EV usability. Once Science cracks this they’ll be Leaves everywhere. So I’m happy to report that in the new Nissan Leaf much improvement has been made, to the point where EV ownership will soon be really tempting. Obviously the Leaf is 100% electric and produces zero emissions. Nissan is a pioneer in the EV world and in the Leaf can boast the world’s best-selling, mass-market electric vehicle. The Mark 1 Leaf was a best seller too, taking home a 50 per cent EV market share. OK, so the whole sector was just 13,500 vehicles last year – out of 2.5 million new cars sold – but kudos all the same. Entry-grade Visia models are available from just £21,990 (including a £4,500 Government grant) and then options rise to almost £28,000 (including grant) for range-topping Tekna versions, like the one here. Based on official stats, the Leaf will give you 168 miles on the combined cycle or up to 258 miles in city conditions, on a single charge. From what I experienced, I have no reason to doubt that. Unsurprisingly, the Leaf is quiet, smooth and has a comfortable suspension set-up. More surprisingly, it’s not slow: 0 to 60

mph in 7.9 seconds. In terms of practicality the Leaf is just as good as everything else comparable: most versions get decent spec, including climate control and heated steering wheel and seats. It looks good too: the old one certainly didn’t. Take your friends out in it and you can discuss the clever “e-pedal”. Press the button and your normal accelerator becomes part brake pedal so, to slow down to a stop, you need only lift off the throttle and the car will decelerate firmly. This saves on conventional braking and is good for range. Charging time from low to 80 per cent is around 40 to 60 minutes (if you can find a quick-charging station), while it’s around 7.5 hours from low to 100 per cent with a typical 7Kw domestic box. In reality you really do need a box at home. Drive this car and know you’re getting cutting-edge engineering while doing your bit to keep the planet alive. And I can guarantee, from time to time, you’ll catch a smug smile playing across your lips when you are out in it – a smile that is infinitely more satisfying than the badge buzz I mentioned earlier. But nonetheless, for anyone who is interested: apparently “Leaf” stands for Leading Environmentally Friendly Affordable Family Car.

Audi RS4 Avant

BY ROB TAYLOR

DEVILISHLY STYLISH

I don’t generally find estate cars as attractive as their saloon cousins. There are occasional exceptions to this rule – stand up the Volvo V50 just before it was canned in 2012 – but fast Audi estates consistently trounce their less practical counterparts. Take the latest: the new Audi RS4 Avant. Now tell me you don’t want one. Even when you wipe the tears from your eyes after discovering its starting price – £61,625 – it’s still devilishly stylish, staggeringly brutal and distinctly appealing. That is, even though no one buys estate cars anymore. Still… the latest bearer of the RS badge combines tremendous everyday usability with exceptional performance from its 2.9 litre 444bhp TFSI engine. Even on patchy UK roads it zings like a missile from point to point, unleashing 443lb ft (which is nighon sustained between 1900rpm and 5000rpm) as it goes. Drive this car and you may well make overtaking fashionable again. The sprint to 62mph takes about 4.1 seconds and the standard Quattro drive does nothing to bog it down at launch.

The fourth generation RS 4 Avant takes much of its design inspiration from the Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO and I can see it: massive air inlets and a wide, flat Singleframe grille define the front end. The optional Matrix LED headlights display tinted bezels. Compared to the Audi A4 Avant, the wheel arches are 30 millimetres wider and contain 19” standard alloys (though if you want 20” Audi will sell them to you) giving added muscularity; it sits lower too and at the rear the oval tailpipes of the RS exhaust system and the roof edge spoiler make for a distinctly aggressive look. Spec it in pearl effect Nogaro blue to recall the first generation of the high-performance Avant from 1999.

everyone buy crossover vehicles? The RS4 Avant is able to return up to 32.1mpg (199 grams of CO2), the biturbo is mated to a permanent all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox, which is silky-smooth. The interior is achingly stylish and gloriously modern, fitted with sophisticated materials and a digital racingstyle cockpit. The predominantly black interior is ripe for hours of customisation and houses highlights that include RS sport seats and a flat-bottomed RS leather sport steering wheel. Plus there’s the legendary Audi virtual cockpit, which is standard in the UK, which features RS-specific displays, indicating g-forces and torque.

Top speed is capped at 155mph unless you pay Audi £1450 to have it extended to 174mph. And I can’t quite decide if you’d be mad to or mad not to. This brings me neatly to Audi’s formidably dense option list: too long to mention here but your main concerns will be whether to go for dynamic steering (£950) and sports suspension (£2000). You might also consider the sports exhaust (£1200), because it sounds so damn funky.

If all that seems faintly infantile, there’s much practicality as well: you still get 505 litres of boot space, which is more than anything available from BMW or Mercedes-Benz and rear head room is generous too. Usefully, the rear bench also splits 40/20/40. Audi’s brilliant 8.3” infotainment system and 12.3” digital instrument set-up come as standard too.

Anyway… does this 1.7-tonne premium estate stack up in the real world: oh, of course it does. And it makes me think: why does

Keeping an open mind, it’s very hard to find much to moan about at all. All I’d suggest is that you take it out on some sweeping A-roads and enjoy the supercarbaiting performance. I know I did.
