Simple Tax Saving TipS
1. Help to buy ISA
2. Marriage Allowance
For any first time buyers this is a must and for any parents or grandparents who want to assist towards a first property purchase then this is a great way of doing so. These ISAs are cash-based and set up with most banks. You can start with an initial amount of £1,200 and save up to £200 per month up to a maximum of £12,000 and, if used towards a deposit on a first property purchase, your solicitor will claim back the tax which results in a 25% uplift.
For any married couples where one spouse does not fully utilise their personal allowance and the other is a basic rate tax payer, you can transfer 10% of the personal allowance which will save £250 in tax this tax year. It can also be backdated to 6th April 2015. 3. Auto-enrolment I am alarmed by the number of employees who have opted out of their employer’s pension scheme thinking that pensions are a waste of money. Where else can you double your money overnight and even after tax, for every £10 you invest you will receive a return of £17. For higher rate tax payers the savings are even greater.
Please note that to qualify there has to be a minimum amount of £1,600 saved in the ISA.
4. Nearing retirement, higher rate tax payer? Invest in a pension rather than an ISA For anyone nearing retirement, rather than saving into an ISA, invest your money into a pension and benefit from the tax credit. For higher rate tax payers, if you invest £60, HMRC pay £40 4
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2019
which gives a total contribution of £100. If on retirement you become a basic rate tax payer, after tax, this will return you £85. 5. Non taxpayers contribute to a pension For anyone over the age of 55 with little or no earnings, you can contribute £2,880 per annum into a pension which will attract a HMRC credit of £720, giving a total contribution of £3,600. You can then withdraw this in its entirety and providing your total income is less than your personal allowance, it will be tax free. 6. Thinking of retiring early? Make sure you utilise your personal allowance in retirement This is particularly appealing for anyone with savings who is still working, does not have any significant retirement provision and is looking to retire in the near future For an example of how this works, I have recently met with new clients where one has retired on his 60th birthday and his spouse is looking to retire in 3 years’ time on or before her
63rd birthday. She has very little in the way of pension provision and does not receive her state pension until she is 63 however they do have savings and she is currently earning £14,000 per annum. I have recommended that she contributes £11,200 into her pension from her savings which will attract a HMRC tax credit of £2,800 and I have suggested that she does this for 3 years. When she then retires she can withdraw this money completely tax free as she will not have any other taxable earnings which in effect gives her a 25% uplift on her savings and in these days of low interest rates, for a no risk return this is unbeatable. And finally, not tax related but please review your pensions regularly! One of my greatest bugbears in life is the number of people who have money saved in pensions and take no interest or can’t be bothered to look at the annual statements when they arrive. There are so many old style pension contracts still in existence that have expensive annual management charges, poor investment fund choice and offer no post retirement options. Looking at investment returns in isolation, there are some policies with Phoenix Life that have not paid any bonus since the turn of the century and many more companies have funds invested
in closed funds that are poorly invested giving mediocre returns. Treat your pensions like you would money in a bank as basically with the new rules that is exactly what it is. The number of new clients I meet who have, in some cases, over £100,000 invested in pensions with companies who are no longer active in the marketplace is staggering so please don’t fall into the trap of thinking your pension is not worth bothering with - do something today?

Shugborough Estate is the best place to be with family and friends this autumn Come and enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer during the autumn months at Shugborough Estate. The Staffordshire property, which has been open under the National Trust since March 2017, is the perfect place to enjoy an autumnal day out, with activities and adventures for all the family. The Estate covers 900 acres of Grade 1 listed Parkland, full of a variety of tree species that turn into a fiery spectacular in the cooler weather. Whether you’re strolling through the arboretum or exploring the walled garden, there is no shortage of things to see. In addition to the beautiful outdoors, there are plenty of inside spaces to enjoy during your visit to Shugborough. Visit the Georgian Mansion, and discover the treasures that were returned by George Anson. Don’t forget to grab a timed ticket to visit the apartment of the late Lord Lichfield, a royal photographer to the stars. After you’ve soaked up this special part of Staffordshire’s heritage, treat yourself to a delicious lunch in the refurbished Mansion Tea-room or a fresh cake and a cup of tea in Park Farm Café, which is dog friendly. Shugborough has a spectacular walled garden, full of tasty produce that is used in the tea rooms and can be bought in the plant centre for a small donation. As well as fruit and veg, Shugborough’s gardeners have been working hard planting colourful borders full of flowers for you to stroll through and enjoy. If you’re interested in this, you may enjoy one of the garden discovery tours that are happening on the 16th and 19th October, or perhaps the floristry session on the 24th October. During harvest time, Shugborough’s working farm is preparing for the winter ahead. On your visit you may see the tractors and bailers mowing and tedding the grass to prepare the feed for the variety of rare and historic breeds on the estate. There will be various opportunities for visitors to get involved with the essential autumn work that will be happening on the estate.

Bathroom ideas and inspiration Whatever your style, whether you’re after a sleek, clutter free family space or a splash of hotel chic – if you’re planning to refresh your bathroom, we’ve got it covered! From statement baths to space-saving storage, Carvers are on hand with a host of inspiration! Refreshing a bathroom doesn’t always require a total overhaul, it can be as simple as swapping the basin, changing the taps or even looking at some new lighting.
definitely experiencing a renaissance now, but it’s important to set the right tone. Think gentle champagne and rose gold shades, rather than showy orangey tones. These can be incorporated through your choice of taps and showers, all finished in brass, chrome and nickel. Whatever option you choose, its often the tiles, flooring, accessories and other all-important finishing touches that really bring the dream to life. Flooring, paint and lighting solutions, which add unique touches to your bathroom project are all available from Carvers, along with the Tile Choice showroom in store, which stocks a wide range of floor and wall tiles and Dixons for all your decorating needs.
2019 has been marked by the return to the organic and natural, highlighting new and functional designs. So, when it comes to bathroom design, the trend sets to be super clean colours, seamless lines and a practical, yet simple arrangement of spaces. Natural materials and industrial fittings are another strong look for bathrooms this year and needn’t cost a fortune. Reclaimed materials work really nicely teamed with modern bathroom suites and fittings and would help to create a bathroom with real character. Continuity is key to seamless lines and one way to achieve this is the use of one single material for cladding the walls and floors, ensuring smooth flowing lines and textures and is a great way to create the feeling of space (.. if this is something that you are lacking). Clever bathroom lighting needs careful consideration and instead of one main light source, the use of multiple lighting devices highlighting separate areas visually increases the space available. Colour options for decorating purposes are undoubtedly ruled by white, however the classic decoration of black and white is set to be a hit, with the introduction of tones of grey for something a bit more unique. Showcase geo patterned tiles on both walls and floors in muted tones for a truly modern feel. For those who prefer brighter colours as an accent, opt for bold natural colours, such as lemon, emerald, turquoise, blue, indigo or amber, if you are wanting to make a statement and give your bathroom a bit of character. Blush pink is the colour of the moment and it offers a light-hearted contrast to the usual neutral pallet. Cheaper than tiling, wallpapering your bathroom can add stunning colour and take plain white tiles to a whole new level. Avoid papering directly behind a bath or basin (due to splashing) and try sealing the paper with a matt decorator’s varnish to create a longer lasting look. Chrome has been king for some time, with regards to accessories and brassware and recently there has been a definite trend for a more modern metallic finish. Gold is 12

Mr Mellor added: “It’s fantastic that the project has finally gained approval. CHAPS will now engage in raising the appropriate funds to construct the memorial which will honour the contribution miners have made in service to their country. “We sincerely hope the public approve of our project, particularly those living in areas with a mining heritage, and that they feel able to donate to the project, which will be a fitting legacy to the miners.”
A national, permanent memorial to commemorate the men, women and children who worked in the mining industry and served or died for their country is to be installed at a cost of £100,000. And it is all thanks to a group of volunteers based in towns within the former Cannock Chase Coalfield. CHAPS (Chase Arts for Public Spaces) has been given the go-ahead to place the monument at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire, following numerous requests to the group to find a way of recognising the country’s mining heritage. The structure, which will stand at 5m long by 2m high and 1m wide, has the backing of the National Union of Mineworkers, MPs representing former mining constituencies and the Arboretum. A site has been identified and the monument is expected to be unveiled in June 2021. It has taken two years of detailed planning to get to this stage. CHAPS, set up in 2003, works to support and promote public works of art and to celebrate its area’s diverse heritage. The group is behind lasting tributes to the mining community of Cannock, Hednesford and Rugeley. President Mike Mellor said: “During research for these particular projects and from queries received from around the country it appeared many mining areas were without some form of recognition of their mining heritage.” From that point the idea was conceived and following discussions, a design was agreed upon with sculptor Andy de Comyn, whose work includes the Shot at Dawn memorial at the 150-acre Staffordshire site and a mining sculpture in Rugeley. Built in Derbyshire stone, the memorial will have a bronze frieze depicting the history of mining including recognising the colliers’ contribution to the two world wars. Research has discovered that 45 miners were awarded the Victoria Cross following the Great War. The number from the Second World War has yet to be established. Fundraising will now begin to enable the project to go ahead. 14

She said: “CHAPS have done amazing work creating mining memorials across Cannock Chase I am delighted that they have secured a Miners’ Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum. “With such a rich mining heritage in Cannock Chase it is fitting that CHAPS, a local group, have led this initiative. I would like to congratulate everyone who has been involved in getting us to this point in the process and I look forward to continuing to support this project.”

There are multiple benefits to choosing porcelain stoneware over natural stone, including resistance to chemical attacks and frost, ease of cleaning and satisfactory friction that translates into good slip resistance. All these features are nearly impossible to find in natural stone, unless we constantly use specific products, thus wasting valuable time and money. Two of its strengths are for sure resistance to stains and abrasion, which make this product perfect for laying in kitchens and public spaces. Porcelain tiles are the perfect option for busy modern day homes where time is limited. 28

Wasp Facts by Penkridge Pest Control Ltd The sting of a wasp should wear off within 24 hours but for a small minority of people the venom in their sting causes anaphylactic shock which can be fatal. Wasps can sting over and over again. Adult wasps mainly feed on nectar, but the majority of their time is taken up by foraging for food for their carnivorous young, mostly insects or spiders. This can be great for our gardens as they eat the garden pests.

Wasps make nests from paper. They chew up strips of bark and spit it out again to form a rough paper. Some wasps make nests in basements, sheds or dark, cool places. A queen starts a new colony each spring. She raises a few worker wasps first to make the nest larger and bring food. Then she starts laying eggs. A colony can grow to 50,000 wasps in one summer. In the winter all the wasps die except for a few new queens. The new queens spend the winter in an old log or burrow. In the spring, they make new colonies. If you need any treatment against wasps in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196. Wasp removal is just £40.00. We do not charge any extra for weekends or evenings.

Crocosmia – Stars of the Autumn Garden Crocosmia are better known as “Montbretia” in Britain and have often have a bad name as invasive, plants. However, there are lots of choice varieties that are less spreading and worthier of their other common name: “Falling Stars” after their cascade of brilliant, fiery, starry flowers. These plants come from Africa and were previously thought to be winter tender needing to be dug up in late autumn and laid out to dry so that the corms could be stored indoors in winter. This is still good practice if your soil is waterlogged in winter and it also serves to reduce the spread of the plants as well. I leave the corms in the soil over winter as my garden isn’t very wet or cold, except some of the very large-flowered varieties like “Emily Mackenzie” or “Star of the East”; I find these two often die out in frosty winters and these get dug up in October or November. The plants like a moisture retentive soil in summer and this will give bigger and more flowers. By choosing different varieties you can have flowers from July to early October and plants from 1ft / 30cm to 4ft / 120cm tall.
Perhaps the most popular, tallest and earliest to flower is the orange-red “Lucifer” with his pleated leaves and long cascades of flowers. He will start flowering in July through to the end of August. Some people suggest he needs staking, but I find that if feeding is kept to a minimum he is more stocky and self-supporting. Lucifer is wonderful for adding a touch of hot colour to a more subdued planting. In our garden we have him amongst regal lilies, rusty foxgloves and giant oats. “Hellfire” is a newer version of this old favourite and is a little shorter and later to flower and has luscious, deep, velvety red flowers. Other tall varieties flowering in late July and August are “Rowallene Yellow” and “Rowallene Orange”: these two have the largest heads of flowers and are around 3ft / 90cm tall. At the other end of the scale there are short varieties for the front of the border like the orange and yellow “Firejumper, red and yellow “Jackanapes” and red “Gloria”. These grow to 1ft / 30cm or slightly less and their bold colourways are the highlight lining my paths and patio in August and September. 30
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2019
For a softer effect, there are some lovely pale lemon flowered varieties. All are very alike: you might find “Citronella”, “Sulpherea” or “Morning Light”, there’s not much to choose between them. These are 1ft 6in / 45cm tall and flower in late August perhaps through to early October. I plant Crocosmia corms in spring about 3-5in / 7-12cm deep and about 6in / 15cm apart although it isn’t crucial to be exact in this. I plant pot-grown specimens at any time other than winter, although I would only plant the more tender types in late spring. Once the shoots show through in spring keep the plants on the moist side. If a late, hard frost is forecast after the shoots are showing, I cover with garden fleece or a mulch, although established clumps will recover quickly from any frost burn. In cold areas, you can leave the old leaves on the plant in winter to provide some protection and choose a mild spell in late winter to cut them off before growth starts. Although the seed heads look attractive on the plant, cut them off before the seeds fall as seedlings might be inferior. These bright plants are easy to grow and invaluable for brightening up the garden in late summer and autumn. Keep an eye out for Crocosmia at plant fairs and catch a falling star for your garden.

Major Boost for Stafford Riverway Link The Stafford Riverway Link project that is aiming to restore the 18th Century waterway link between the Staffs and Worcestershire Canal at Baswich and the town centre has received a major boost. The Finney family who own the land at Baswich, where the original canal Basin and towpath is currently being rebuilt, have generously agreed to release the land to the SRL Community Interest Company, which was set up by an enthusiastic group of local volunteers in 2009. The Finney family are well known in the area as it farmed there for many years and had a retail milk business in Stafford. Ivor Hind Chairman for Stafford Riverway Link said: “This is a significant development for us and we’re grateful for the generosity and support of the Finney family as well as the increasing number of local businesses and organisations who are sponsoring and supporting us. It has always been and remains to be our aim to restore the historic river and canal waterway that links the county town of Stafford to the national waterways network for the benefit of the community and all interested groups”. The landowner, Eunice Finney and her family have followed her late husband Bill’s wishes to lease the land, on a nominal Peppercorn Rent, to the Stafford Riverway Link. Eunice Finney ARAgS commented, “We are pleased to see this project progressing and proud that we can hand over the lease for the land to the Stafford Riverway Link in return for a yearly Peppercorn rent. My late husband strongly believed that the project would benefit many Stafford residents and the wider community, these plans will start to re-write the history books for Stafford. “ To celebrate this excellent news, a Public Open Weekend is being held from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September 2019 to which everyone is welcome to attend along with invited selected guests. The lease for the land will be officially signed and handed over around 11:15am on the Saturday. This will be an opportunity to rediscover a lost part of Stafford’s heritage, meet the volunteers who have made the Stafford Riverway Link project possible and see the progress made so far and how they are working to bring boats back up the River Sow into the centre of Stafford, as was the case in the 1800s and 1900s.
36
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2019
There will be a display of the history of the Link, progress of the work carried out so far, along with competitions, prizes and games for children to play. This will be an opportunity for people in Stafford to visit the site and inspect the work done so far. There will also be boat trips available for visitors on the canal during the weekend. Anyone interested in becoming either a volunteer to help with the project or a member of SRL, please come along.

District scoops six prestigious Green Flag Awards for the third year
Cannock Chase Council has scooped six green flag awards and has retained its top performing District Council status in the West Midlands in a ceremony last week. Green Flag Award winners were revealed on 18 July 2019 nationwide, and Cannock Park, Elmore Park, Ravenhill Park, Castle Ring, Stile Cop Cemetery and Hednesford Park are among the record breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world. This international award is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. Councillor Christine Mitchell Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said: “We are absolutely delighted to have retained the six green flags for our parks and green spaces in Cannock Chase for the third year in a row. “We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining the green spaces in the Cannock Chase District.”
Stafford Coastal Cruising Club
Round GB Yacht Skipper to Teach In Stone Three years ago Michael Goodwin, 63, sailed around Great Britain in his yacht Blue Star, raising £30,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Now Stafford Coastal Cruising Club have contracted Michael, a former university academic, to teach the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Day Skipper theory course on their behalf. The course will be delivered on Saturday mornings at a venue in Stone and is aimed at all aspiring yacht skippers planning to sail off into the sunset aboard their own boat. Michael explained ‘This is the first step to fulfilling your dream of captaining your own boat, whether it be for your new lifestyle or simply to charter a boat for next year’s holiday. No previous experience is needed to study on the course. Successful completion of the follow-on practical course then equips you to take command of a yacht with more confidence.’
38 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2019
Michael, himself a member of Stafford Coastal Cruising Club, recently led both a club sailing week in Corfu, and the club’s entry in the Round The Island Race around the Isle of Wight. The club facilitates members getting together to organise sailing weeks, and over the winter months hosts regular presentations on sailing matters. You do not have to sail in order to be a member of the club however - many members simply enjoy the social programme. Whilst membership of the club is encouraged, it is not required for enrolment on the Day Skipper course.
Anyone who is interested in joining the RYA Day Skipper course, which starts in November, should contact Michael via the Stafford Coastal Cruising Club website, or email training@ staffordcoastalcruising.org, or tel: 07817122491
Work gets underway on Compton Care’s Coordination Centre
Photo taken by Express & Star
Following months of planning and preliminary work, construction work is now underway at the much-anticipated Compton Care Coordination Centre. The building, funded in part by a £1.6 million donation from members of the Transport & General Workers Union of the former Goodyear Tyre Plant, will be constructed on the charity’s Compton Hall Headquarters site on Compton Road West. The Coordination Centre, which is estimated to take 12 months to complete, will see the charity be able to coordinate care and support services for local people diagnosed with incurable illnesses from one central location. Compton Care CEO Claire Marshal commented: “This is an incredibly exciting phase of our Compton Care journey with the new build helping us to provide extraordinary care to our patients and families. “The Centre will enable us to coordinate our services from one central point creating a more responsive service for our patients and their families eventually providing 24/7 advice and support for patients, carers and referrers.” “None of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of the members of the Transport & General Workers Union Benevolent Fund. They are funding so much more than a building, they are funding the opportunity for local people who have been diagnosed with an incurable illness to access the extraordinary care, encouragement and support they need in order to live their best life possible. Words cannot express how grateful and appreciative we all are.”
commented: “The Trustees and management committee are absolutely delighted, to see the start of our corner stone project, creating a proud living legacy to all of the ex-members of the fund. “This is the people’s project, supporting Compton Care has been championed by all members since day one. We hope all of the members and their families will feel a sense of pride over the next. 12 months as our dream will become a reality. “The Coordination Centre will leave a long and lasting positive legacy, supporting the people of Wolverhampton and the Black Country. Friendly Rivalry between two Clubs The Rotary Club of Cannock and the Rotary Club of Burntwood get together every year at Hammerwich Cricket Club for a games challenge. The games include table football, table skittles, golf ball chipping, darts, croquet etc. In addition to a little friendly rivalry this is also an opportunity to renew old friendships and of course some good-natured ribbing!
Above: Rotarians Michelle Davies-Rounds and Paul Smith watched by Dennis Robins
The two Clubs also have joint charity projects together and also assist in each other’s events so this is also an opportunity for informal discussion and idea sharing. Burntwood Rotarian Chris Starkey had a very successful night and so this year Burntwood came out on top. Cannock Rotarian Jacko Page organised the evening again this year and presented prizes of chocolate to the individual event winners. This was followed by a fish and chip supper and a couple of beers. A very enjoyable evening. If you wish to find out more about the Rotary Club of Cannock please visit the Club’s website at www.cannockrotary.co.uk 40 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2019

Children’s Market…
If you’ve spent a fortune trying to keep the kids amused this summer, then we’ve got the perfect solution for you. Penkridge Market are holding a fantastic event on the 15th September that will not only make you money, but keep the kids entertained as well. The Children’s Market, will give you the opportunity to sell all of your unwanted items; find fantastic bargains, plus give the kids a great day out at the same time. The Market, will feature stalls selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes to toys and handmade crafts. There will also be plenty of activities to keep the children entertained, with a petting farm, donkey rides, Diddi Dance & Toddler Sense taster sessions, magic show, free craft area, as well as a special guest appearance from everyone’s favourite pig!
The event will run from 10am to 3pm, and with free admission for children and only £2 for adults, it makes it an affordable day out for the whole family. Over 60 stall holders are expected, selling a variety of goods from clothes, toys and books to handmade wooden toys, knitted items and personalised gifts. The majority of stalls will be undercover in the indoor market, making it a fun day out whatever the weather. Mother of two and brain child behind the event, Kate Kingsley, said: “I wanted to create an event that not only catered for the needs of parents but also the children themselves. The Children’s Market gives parents the opportunity to buy and sell nearly new items, as well as new products such as handmade crafts, whilst the kids are having fun. They can hire a stall for as little as £12 and hopefully make a great profit too.”
If you would like to book a stall at the event, please contact Kate by e-mailing kate@ penkridgemarket.co.uk

Marinate 24 hours Grill time 12 minutes Course BBQ / Dinner
Chopping board Skewers BBQ or Ribbed skillet pan
METHOD Dice the pork loin into 1 inch dice, slice the red onions into 16 wedges the courgette into 8 chunks and slice the chorizo into 16 chunks. In a small pan add the honey, balsamic, thyme and garlic cloves, gently warm and pour over the meat and vegetables then sprinkle over the paprika. Get your hands in the bowl and give everything a good mix then leave until the next day in the fridge. When you’re ready to cook the brochettes take them out of the fridge and evenly share the pieces between the amount of skewers you have. Place the sweet potato on a baking tray in the oven for about an hour (depends on size). If you’re using wooden skewers soak them in water over night so they don’t burn up quickly on the grill. Season and grill the brochettes on all sides until thoroughly cooked through and serve immediately. If you don’t have a barbecue you can cook them on the shelf in the oven on 200oC with a tray underneath to catch the juices. Use the juices afterwards to brush the brochettes giving them a nice shiny glaze. Season again with salt and cracked black pepper. Slice the gem lettuce in half and take out the stalk then wash thoroughly with the spinach and shake in a colander to dry off. Thinly slice the radish and red

Golf Day rises over £5000 On Tuesday 9th July the Rotary Club of Cannock held its annual golf day at The Chase Golf Club. This even is the clubs biggest single fund raising event and all funds raised on the day go to support Rotary Charities and good causes. Unfortunately due to the unpredictable British weather the club was forced to cancel the event in June, thanks to the tremendous support of the teams and The Chase Golf Club who supports this event every year the Rotary club was able to rearrange the event with a very short period of time.
The Rotary Club of Cannock is already starting to plan next year’s event which will be held in June 2020 at The Chase Golf Club. If you wish to take part in next year’s event more information will be available on the Rotary Club of Cannock web site. If you wish to find out more about the Rotary Club of Cannock, please email secretary@cannockrotary.co.uk or visit the club’s web site at www.cannockrotary.co.uk Photograph L-R Rotarian Harold Bould & Tony Chew from Brindley Honda Cannock.
The Rotary Club also received very generous sponsorship from number local companies which made a significant contribution to ensuring the day was a success. The day concluded with a splendid evening meal and prize presentations raffle and charity auction which raised over £5000 for charity. The Rotary President Geoff Clegg thanked all involved with the organising the event and assured the guests that ALL money raised would be used to support those in need in the local area. This year’s winning team was Mossvale on 103 points. There were also prizes for the longest drive and a special prize for nearest the Pin on the 9th Donated by Brindley Honda.
Become a magistrate in Staffordshire Staffordshire and West Mercia Advisory Committee is seeking applications from those interested in becoming a magistrate on the Staffordshire Bench where new magistrates are needed in the adult criminal court. These are voluntary positions; you do not need legal training or formal qualifications to become a magistrate and we are looking for applications from across the county and from all sections of the community. Magistrates are not paid (although some allowances can be claimed), and those who are successful in being appointed must be able to attend training and sit in court for at least 13 days a year – this is a minimum requirement. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 65 may apply. Applications are particularly welcome from members of Black and Minority Ethnic communities, people under the age of 50, people in paid employment,
46
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2019
and people with a disability who are able, either unassisted or with the benefit of reasonable adjustments, to carry out the full range of a magistrate’s duties. If you are interested in being considered for appointment and want to find out more about the work of a magistrate and how to apply, see: www. gov.uk/become-magistrate or contact the Chairman of the Staffordshire Bench, Carol Colclough: Carol. colclough1@btinternet.com or phone 01889 623057. Applications for adult criminal courts opens on the 1st September with interviews being held later in the year. Prior to submitting an application at least 3 observation visits must be made to a magistrate’s court where magistrates [rather than a District Judge] are sitting; each visit should be for a minimum of half a day. Magistrates will tell you what a worthwhile and rewarding position this is – as well as doing something vital within the community, friendships are formed and there is an active social committee.

Glycolic peels at La Minky One of the most effective treatments you can treat yourself with is the Glycolic peel these chemical peels freshen up the look of your skin and revive its glow. Glycolic peels are made up of a sugarcane derivative and have a mild impact on your skin. They target the skin’s epidermis and do not penetrate the deeper layers.
Glycolic peels vs Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation procedure. It requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently “shave” the skin’s surface, removing the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine vellus hair. The downside of this procedure is bacteria getting into the skin. Also the hair growth which has blunt ends makes the facial hair coarse and prickly and can cause ingrown hairs. Here at La Minky we share with you some benefits glycolic peels give to your skin.
Makes Skin Pores Small
Increases Collagen Production
Glycolic peels enhance the production of collagen in your skin making it supple. This improved collagen production keeps your skin soft, maintains its elasticity, and absorbs the skin moisture. Also, this enhanced collagen production keeps your skin smooth, preventing it from going dry. Glycolic peel therapy is often referred to as the “lunchtime peel” because of the short duration in which this treatment can be done with no downtime. The treatment rejuvenates your skin, helps improve the skin regeneration process, and exfoliates the dull or damaged layer of skin.
24 Carat Gold Dusk mask are high in antioxidants and containing anti-inflammatory properties, legend has it that the ancient Egyptians ingested gold for its healing properties and Cleopatra used a gold mask every night to enhance her complexion, and keep her skin youthful, glowing and beautiful.
Glycolic peels are very effective at shrinking the pores of your skin. The fact is that your skin pores get enlarged when clogged with bacteria and dirt. This gives you blackheads. Glycolic peel seeps into the epidermis of your skin and removes dead skin cells on its surface. Once cleansed, your skin pores shrink.
Reduces the Effects of Sun Damage
If your skin is exposed to sun for longer durations then this direct contact with sunlight may result in dark spots on your skin or its discoloration. Glycolic peels shed the affected skin layer and reveal the fresh layer of skin that lies underneath it. Moreover, glycolic therapy stimulates rebuilding of your skin cells. This results in a brighter complexion of your skin. To have a clear skin, free from wrinkles & spots is every woman’s ultimate desire. Gold can activate the basal cells of the skin, which increases the elasticity of the skin. It thus reduces wrinkles, fine lines, blemishes, and marks on the skin. Gold helps in improving the blood circulation, hence it helps hydrate and maintain the skin’s moisture level. The small particles of gold get absorbed into the skin imparting a rich glow. This makes the skin healthy, fresh and radiant. To sum up, gold is gold. You will have to try it to believe the amazing gold dust mask benefits.
Anti Aging
Using these peels, wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of aging on the face and neck area are reduced, leaving behind brilliant results! The glycolic acid strengthens the deep layers of skin and softens the lines on your face, this will leave you with tighter skin and with a firmer appearance of your face. 48

Cannock and District Ladies Probus Chairman Margaret Thompson welcomed long standing member Barbara Bowman back after a serious illness and stay in hospital. Also welcomed were new members Alison Cardy, Janet Bolton, and Betty Hackett: taking our membership up to 65. The speaker this month was professional naturalist Dr Michael Leach who entertained us by sharing his wonderful up close and personal photographs of both domestic and wild animals. He enthralled us with stories of his travels to remote and exotic destinations: photographing gorillas in Africa, monkeys in the Amazon, and elephants in Kenya. Meetings for Cannock and District Ladies Probus are held on the first Thursday of each month at The Chase Golf and Country Club where they share a meal, and usually have a speaker. Guests are welcome if they book in advance. For further information contact the Membership Secretary 01889 882166 and www.probusonline. org

Welcome to Perfectly Polished Nails by Laura… After completing a comprehensive nail technician’s course during 2012, I worked in salons at weekends enhancing my knowledge and skills, whilst having regular sessions looking after friends and family nails. I then operated mobile for several years on evenings and weekends, gaining valuable experience, and always keeping up to date with the latest trends and techniques. Earlier this year following additional training, the self-belief and confidence in my own ability was where I wanted it to be. Therefore, I was now ready to listen to what people had been encouraging me to do for quite some time, and Perfectly Polished was born.
In addition to my business being salon based, I am now able to invite clients to my home for appointments in Norton Canes, where I have a room set up solely for this purpose.

Clients will often sit down and say ‘surprise me’ or B A Y R ‘please do whatever you L A U like’ or they’ll look at my current set (which I also do myself) and ask for something like them. Others will come in with an idea, or have seen pictures of a set they like, or will come to me for inspiration with a colour scheme in mind. So, if you’re looking at something special for that big girl’s night out, office party, date night or simply your everyday nails, then look no further. I pride myself in using top quality products, genuine Swarovski crystals, and most of all I feel so fortunate to be doing something that I love for a living, and listening to the feedback I get from my clients is a great feeling. A few words about Pets Paw Traits I have always had a passion for painting with pastels. On 13th April 2018 we rescued a small dog, a chug named Teddy, days after having him I started to make paintings of him, it was then I realized my love affair with painting pet’s portraits. In February this year I decided I would like to try and promote myself and try to turn my passion into pocket money. I only need a picture of your pet emailed to me and I will do the rest. (Please try to show your pets eyes) Each one of my A4 sized paintings takes me about 3 days to complete.I charge £50.00 for an A4 sized bespoke hand painted, signed and framed picture. A3 sized pictures are a lot more work so I charge £85.00
I can send these pictures anywhere in the UK (postal charges will need to be added) Orders for Christmas are now been taken. Teddy and I hard at work, he’s my inspiration.

Bee-utiful scarves supporting Staffordshire’s ecosystem Local family part of a bigger plan to help save Britain’s bees
When it’s estimated that a third of what we eat each day relies on pollination, it soon becomes apparent that bees are an important ecosystem of their own. But how are we protecting their future?
Staffordshire born family brand Fleetwood & Foxgrove are aiming to empower fashionistas to make meaningful change by supporting the bees of Britain. The young business, set up by mum-of-one Kirsty Fleetwood from her home in Brewood, is known for its country style scarves and accessories. The 100% silk scarves are designed and made right here in Britain and the latest edition to their collection is all about the humble bumble and the honey makers! After reading an article from Sustain, the alliance for better food and farming, about the catastrophic decline in native species of bees in Britain, the conscious entrepreneur decided to seek out a way to support.

Pictured above: Founder of Fleetwood & Foxgrove, Kirsty with her father-in-law Roger with his home based bee hives. The brand new silk scarf from the 'Foxgrove' collection sees the British Bee Keepers Association benefit from every sale with a £1 profit donation. What's more, each purchaser also receives a pouch of bee attracting sprinkle seeds to make their very own pollination station at home. The scarf which has just launched on their website is of course the colour of honey and available in three sizes; a pocket square, a twilly and a large traditional scarf. 32 year old Kirsty said, “We’ve decided to support the British Bee Keepers Association because of their commitment to educating the public in the importance of bees in the environment. We genuinely believe education is key at this point. The more people who understand the importance of bees the better they will try to protect and preserve these busy little pollinators.” Kirsty, who also heads up a marketing department for global fresh produce growers Jupiter, adds; “If we can all do and be seen to be doing, our little bit for biodiversity we can live in hope that the message will gain momentum and the general public will catch on and join in.” Kirsty Fleetwood www.fleetwoodandfoxgrove.co.uk 07713 286 011
something that takes time to listen and time to explain the modern denture options without jargon or pressure. Smilecrafters is a private denture clinic in Burntwood. Run by husband and wife team Adrian and Jacque Rollings, who aim to provide a professional and discreet denture service for local people.
Smilecrafters Denture Clinic and Laboratory is proud to be supporting British Crafts and Manufacturing When patients visit us for new dentures they are often intrigued to learn a little more about what goes into making their new dentures. In fact, they are often surprised at the number of processes that are involved and the creativity that goes on behind the scenes in the Dental Laboratory. Creativity that is a mixture of both science and art. There is currently much talk in the media about robots taking over the jobs traditionally done by humans. Plus of course a lot of traditional manufacturing has shifted overseas. Well at Smilecrafters our dentures are proudly made in Staffordshire, the so called creative county. Now that doesn’t mean that we ignore technology, far from it as we have computerised equipment onsite. But we don’t use technology for technology sake, only if it can make a useful improvement to the dentures we construct. After all, creating the right set of teeth for you is all about getting to know the individual and understanding exactly what you are looking for. Where no question is ‘daft’,
We aim to avoid jargon, explain in clear honest terms and go at your pace to help you to make an informed choice about your denture needs
Both Adrian and Jacque are fully qualified Dental Technicians registered with the General Dental Council. Adrian has also undergone extensive further training to gain a Clinical Diploma that enables him to use the title Clinical Dental Technician. This means that he can make full dentures for you directly without the need for you to see a dentist and partial dentures if you obtain a prescription from a dentist. So why not give Adrian & Jacquelyn a call and book your FREE initial consultation at our friendly ground floor clinic in Burntwood. *Full dentures can normally be constructed without the need for you to see a dentist, partial dentures require a dentists prescription. Implant dentures over existing dental implants require a dentists prescription. New dental implants are not offered at Smilecrafters Denture Clinic, patients considering this type of treatment will be given the option of a referral to a local dentist who offers dental implant treatment. ESTABLISHED CLINICAL THERAPIST It is estimated that 1 in 6 adults in the last week have experienced a common mental health problem. Mixed anxiety and depression accounts for one fifth of sick days in the UK. And what cannot be measured, is the emotional impact on the individual plus their family and friends. The range of support is increasing but still massively under resourced. In 2017, the Government produced a green paper highlighting the importance of tackling mental health in the UK. Recognising that from an early age, people suffer needlessly, without realising that support is available. Many schools and universities recognise mental health challenges and encourage parents to identify this in their child’s development. Sue Starr is often recommended by local schools to parents whose children struggle with mental health. The NHS uses a range of talking therapies including hypnotherapy, CBT and others. But the resource is very limited, waiting times are weeks and quality of support varied. Sue Starr has been an established therapist since 2012 and has consistently worked with clients of all ages, backgrounds and conditions. Sue says “we have strengthened our

relationships with local schools, GP’s and Dental Practices and seen a real shift in positivity towards the use of talking therapies”. She adds “we work with our clients to provide the therapy they need; be that hypnotherapy, NLP or CBT. Whichever is best suited to how the client would like to proceed and whichever gets the best outcome”. Sue has experience with a vast range of personal challenges and symptoms that people have been struggling with, sometimes for years. Her youngest client was 6 and oldest 84 showing that talking therapies really can be of benefit to anyone. www.suestarr-hypnotherapy.co.uk www.teenageemotionalstresstherapy.co.uk

Five marathons in five days In the first week of November this year; I’ll be running five consecutive marathons in five days, to raise funds for our daughter Eadie. We are aiming to raise £15,000 in total for therapy abroad at The Adeli Medical Centre in Slovakia which specialises in neuro rehab, which could enable her to walk and gain further independence such as feeding herself. We realised something was different about Eadie at around six months of age. Eadie’s twin was rolling, alert and beginning to crawl; Eadie was floppy and sleepy. Eventually she was diagnosed as having low muscle tone, (hypertonia) but is also hypermobile in other parts of her body, microcephaly – and as we discovered from fits which started at nine months; had Epilepsy too. Life felt very hard and uncertain for many months, having twins is tiring enough, but we had a 21 month old boy too, we were working full time, and all the while trying to do our best for the children’s lives to be normal and fulfilled whilst fighting to get Eadie’s needs recognised and met somehow.
My partner Sally initiated the fundraising; through children’s events such as our UV rave’s for up to eight year olds, cake sales and princess and pirate parties. One thing I can do is run, having to date clocked 29 marathons. Doing just one marathon didn’t quite seem enough, so finding a week of marathons over half a year ahead – seemed the perfect challenge worthy of Eadie and her daily struggle. Being a full time Nursing Sister, full-time mum on my days off, and charity volunteer; getting enough training in still seems impossible, but yet somehow it is coming together. As a test I did two back-to-back marathons in July – finishing both feeling strong (and second person in overall both days!). As I work twelve hour days, I often have to get a run in after this – getting changed at work in to running gear and heading off for 5-7 miles. Getting my nutrition right is vital too; and I’ve learnt some hard lessons in training and how best to recover.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2019
My running club – the Stafford Harriers, have been a great support, I often run 8 miles or so before meeting them for a further 8 more. They are such a lovely bunch – nominating the charity Oasis who provide so much support for us and Eadie. One or two of the club have even offered to run one of the five marathons with me. I’m determined my training won’t take me away from time with the kids – so train and run training marathons mid-week when they’re at nursery, or when they’re asleep. Being with them is so precious, I want to savour our time together. I am still hoping for a local business sponsor, we are getting considerable coverage on local and social media – hence potentially considerable advertising. My step-sister is also adamant she’ll get me on TV – we’ll see.

Kia ProCeed GT
THE HALO MODEL
Always a driving force in Kia’s ongoing march towards market domination, the new ProCeed takes the popular model in an exciting new direction, combining size and style. I’ve always been a big fan of the Korean brand for its design flair, sensible 7-year warranty, reasonable pricing and fine diesel engines. What I have here is the 1.6 litre T-GDi GT petrol however, since diesel is a little out of vogue right now and because I’m always keen to find out how well manufacturers manage 200+ bhp through the front wheels, especially when using a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Let’s start up…
62
0-60mph in 7.2 seconds, or – far more likely – ease off into a leisurely flow. OK, so this vehicle talks a good game on paper but it doesn’t really want to be used as a B-road blitzer, it’s far happier having its throttle tickled, rather than prodded. The ProCeed excels on motorways and fast stretches with its surfeit of low-down torque and almostinstant turbo pick-up; it rides well on its big 18” alloys. That’s not to say it’s not an accomplished tool for towns and cities and everything in between, because it is. Considering it has suspension that’ll help take you round corners with unerring ease, it’s very comfortable.
The driving position is great, with loads of adjustment; the seats drop low and are hugely supportive on a long-run. The GT has red stitching on the leather and suede sports seats and steering wheel, which ties up neatly with the garnish on the exterior sills, diffuser and front bumper. Hit the starter button and immediately the GT announces its sporting credentials (that is if you missed the red accents on everything) by piping into the cabin a rorty grumble from the exhaust. So far, so good.
It has loads of kit as-standard as well: everything from ProCeed GT-Line up gets full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-connectivity and an 8” touchscreen with navigation. GT-Line S gives you 18-inch wheels, a tilt/ slide sunroof, LED headlamps, black leather interior, heated seats, a powered tailgate, blind spot warning and a smart parking assistance system. Although, oddly, I’m always too nervous to fully utilise this radical parking tech; I sometimes even find myself twisting around in my seat to gauge reverse parking, in spite of the full-colour camera image integrated into the centre fascia.
Select ‘Sport’ if you’re a little bit immature (guilty!) and want to make for a Fast and Furious getaway towards
The ‘GT’ is the halo model in the range, and it comes with all attendant bragging rights. It is vaguely “warm”
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | SEPTEMBER 2019
in its performance numbers but is better served when being considering as a ‘lifestyle’ vehicle for trendy thirty-somethings who are keen on taking their surfboard to the beach (the ProCeed has a carvernous and hardly-at-all compromised 594 litre bootspace despite its swooping tailend) but less keen on more mature, traditional-looking estates, like the Ceed Sportswagon. I can definitely see the appeal of exploding the myth that you can’t have style and practicality too. The styling of this latest iteration is a major draw, even when parked beside a hugely expensive Mercedes Benz CLA Shooting Brake the ProCeed catches attention. And the same is true when it comes to numbers too: it costs just £28,140. The previous generation ProCeed may have been a three-door hatchback of which I was very fond (the new bodystyle does still share its wheelbase with its hatchback sibling), but this new one trounces it when it comes to individuality, style and verve and practicality. The ProCeed provides the kind of duality that is a first for a car in the mainstream sector: it is a vehicle as well-attuned to the capricious climate of modern life as any I’ve driven recently.

Peugeot 508 GT
IT'S SENSATIONAL
This is a sensational car. I can speak to this with absolutely no equivocation because I’ve just spent a week away with it on the English Riviera. Yet despite the splendid weather and the admiring glances that have been thrown the 508’s way from passers by, something has been eating away at me: far too few people will ever allow themselves to drive and enjoy this car.
the line between style and function. And this brings me to lament yet again: Peugeot expects diesels to make up most of the sales, so this fiery four-pot petrol will be left in the wilderness as well. For Peugeot geeks among you, this particular 508 GT calls to mind the Peugeot 405 Mi16 in that it is, when fitted with the 1.6 litre turbocharged 222bhp petrol I have here, a bit of a Q-car in a world of plain, homogenised German juniorexecutive saloons.
I fear that right now the cult of the SUV (as well as the myriad sub-SUV/ Crossover derivations) exerts more pull on motorists than the moon that’s currently dragging in the lapping Torquay-waters, wetting my Albinowhite feet. It is more seductive than Charles Manson in his prime, more intoxicating than the allure of icecold cider on a hot summer evening. As such this trend has stolen away buyers from the traditional saloon (or ‘D-class’ segment as Peugeot refers to it; it also calls the 508 a ‘Fastback’, which I rather like), buyers who would traditionally get to fall in love with the 508 GT (‘GT’ is a trim level, one down from ‘First Edition’) as I have. All of this makes me a little sad.
It’s quick (0-60mph in 7.4 seconds); but not in a shouty, “look-at-me” way – and I love that. The steering weights-up nicely at speed, is very responsive and the 508 handles its mass well, taking apart sinuous bends with aplomb. In whichever ‘Driver Mode’ you go for, you’ll always be comfortable (especially in ‘Comfort’-mode, obviously) on all but the most brutal roads (the 19” alloys do come at some cost) as the 508 rides well, cocooning the driver from wind and road noise, ushering in a new age of motoring satisfaction. In this respect it really does deserve its ‘GT’ tag.
Devilishly attractive – especially in black – and with low coupé lines allied to a practical number of five doors, the 508 GT manages to walk
And for the money, it also promises to see you sitting in and around more luxury and tech than anything Teutonic. The interior is of tip-top quality and the dash is deliciously tactile. A nice HD central touchscreen
runs Peugeot’s i-Cockpit. It’s all been well thought out and you could lose hours of your life in here, customising into infinity. In Yankee parlance this 508 has “everything on it.” For just over £1000 you can even spec ‘Night Vision’. I’ve driven vehicles costing twice the sub-£40k this costs that had much, much less. So as I waft back up the M5 on the hottest day of 2019 in air-conditioned luxury, my leather-clad throne performing myriad massagefunctions along the way, I savour every minute. The eight-speed automatic transmission is a willing and able companion, never shirking or straining. At no time do I feel tired or stressed at the wheel as I peel off the miles. Not even when our motorway-monitoring overlords elect to close a junction – redirecting all three lanes on the north-bound carriageway through hamlets and badly-drawn horse tracks with insouciance similar to the Soviet Union’s response to Chernobyl in 1986 – do I care. I simply see it as a way to get better acquainted with this luxury land-cruiser. And I would urge you to do so too, forget “SUVs” and “Crossovers”, drive a car that’s not following a trend but cutting its own path. They won’t be making them forever.
