Building A Conservato

To many householders, a conservatory is a useful addition to their home. It can be useful to almost any property but especially to those where just a little more space is required but the need to move is definitely not.

Then there is the roof. The glass there will need cleaning from time to time and unless one is prepared to have scaffolding erected each time the window cleaner visits, self- cleaning glass should be the glass of choice. Naturally these specialist glasses are rather more expensive than normal window glass but they are essential to making the structure usable all-round the year.

individual heat source may have to be considered. However the heat is supplied, it will be necessary because even with special glass, it will get very chilly in there in winter.

So having made the decision to have the extension, the enthusiastic home owner goes off to make the purchase. This is unfortunately something of a mistake. Building a conservatory that is usable all-round the year requires planning and thought. Without these there is a danger the structure will be unbearably hot in summer and unbearably cold in winter with no really happy medium.

Size is very important. Conservatories can range in size from little more than a large porch to something covering half the garden. The size will dictate whether or not you will need planning permission. To be sure about this, once the size has been chosen, a visit to the local council’s planning department will soon put you right.

All this adds up to a pretty penny which brings us to the final consideration, cost.

First decide where the structure is to go. It is possible the design of the house dictates only one position which could be facing any direction of the compass. This is important because the glass that is used for the structure must be chosen carefully. For example, on the north facing wall the glass should be the sort that contains heat. On a south facing wall it should reflect heat. It is worth bearing in mind too that all the glass, of whatever type, will have to be toughened for safety’s sake and for security. 04

The size will of course depend on the use the conservatory will be put to. If it is to be an extra reception room then it will have to be large enough to accommodate a sensible number of easy chairs and other suitable furniture. If it is to be a dining room then a table, etc. should fit in comfortably. If it is to be a playroom for the children then its size will depend on their age and number. Then there is the matter of heating. Ideally an extension of the main house’s central heating should be fitted. This is not always possible for a number of reasons, so an

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2012

Finally there is the matter of privacy. If it is destined to be a family room and it is in a position that is overlooked by neighbouring properties, blinds will be required.

Conservatories can cost from a couple of thousand pounds up to as much as one is prepared to pay. Don’t underestimate the cost of a ‘usefully sized’ structure. That small, economical extension may look useful in the showroom or catalogue but living with it might be a different matter. To be as sure as you can be about size, mark it out in the garden and then decide what furniture could be fitted into the space. You might be quite surprised just how large it will have to be. Accommodating two sun loungers and a small drinks table for around five thousand pounds might seem ideal, but it’s a lot of money to spend on just occasional use. Better by far to spend rather more for a really useful space that will also add considerably to the value of the property as a whole.

Solar Panel Installati

Tel: 01902 562440 Email: martin@aceelec.co.uk www.acesolarenergy.co.uk

The Best Financial Investment You’ll Make This Year Opportunities to get something for nothing in this dark and dismal recession are about as everyday as a solar eclipse. But by harnessing free solar energy via discreet and relatively affordable solar energy panels - every unshaded, southerly facing property can make money out of thin air. It’s an environmentally friendly decision that you will make when you choose to install solar panels to your property. The energy created is clean, green and pollutant free - reassuring you that you are doing your part in helping the environment. And the benefits don’t stop there. Once installed the panels immediately start to convert the sun’s rays into free electricity to be used in your home during daytime hours - making the days of inflated energy bills history. And what’s more, thanks to the government’s Feed In Tariff Scheme (FITS) you are set to start earning money from your investment right from the day you install. 08

Paying currently 21p per Kwhr unit produced, the Feed In Tariff Scheme rewards property owners financially for their ecologically sound investment at a guaranteed rate for twenty five years. And even more excitingly, any surplus power you produce is sold back to the National Grid and results in additional payments being made direct to you, boosting your solar panel income further. Leading the way in solar panel installation is Ace Solar Energy of Wolverhampton; undoubtedly the experts when it comes to the design and installation of top quality, bespoke solar panel (PV) systems. Even though the FITS payment has been reduced this year, there’s still a great financial incentive to fit solar panels to your home, as Ace Solar’s

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2012

Martin Brown explains: “The cost of systems has fallen dramatically - prices have tumbled by about 40% - meaning that investment returns are still really good.” Thanks to the cut in the initial outlay, and a guaranteed 21p payment on each Kwhr unit of energy produced, solar panel installation is still as financially rewarding as ever. Always committed to providing outstanding levels of customer care, Martin and his team strive to maximise the return on their client’s investment. And with a glowing reputation and a wealth of satisfied customers, they are the trusted choice for anyone wanting to make their home work for them. So in these tough financial times - where conventional investment products are underperforming installing solar panels could well be the best decision you’ll make this year, thanks to possible tax free index linked returns of 10%.

ren want to be! ild ch re he w e er ph os Friendly, family atm

When I first visited Chase Academy ten years ago it was the atmosphere that drew me to the school. It is something that persists and I still delight when visiting parents and students comment on the warmth and friendliness of the place.

The facts:

That said, we are serious about education and it is perhaps surprising that we do not have entrance examinations for our students. Our intake is average in ability. Our students achieve more because we expect more.

• An individual curriculum for your child.

Emily joined our Junior School recently and when asked how she found it she said that she loved it. She gets lots of work done and there are no interruptions like at her old school.

Call to make an appointment to view the school and see for yourself.

Felicia was told in a previous school that she would never pass GCSE Maths but she did so, in fact two years early and she is now studying A Level a year early in Year 11. Oliver is about to head off to a top University with A’s and B’s at GCSE, and A’s and B’s predicted at A Level. Other students think that Oliver is a really clever individual because of his results. In fact Oliver falls into the average ability band who are predicted grade C’s. Another of our younger students, Hanna, came to us in year 5, a reluctant student to say the least. She did not want to be here and she certainly didn’t want to learn. With care and attention and a fair degree of firmness she has turned this around. She still finds Maths a challenge but having gone back to basics with her she is on track to sit her GCSE in year 9. This is someone who could easily have been dismissed as someone who would never achieve. The key is that we do not limit expectations. The teaching is excellent and teachers give freely of their time, especially for those who are determined to do well.

Recipe provided by Chef Jon Young The Barnt Green Inn, Kendal End Road Rednal, Birmingham B45 8PZ Tel: 0121 445 4949

Recipe of the Month Pan-Fried Hake with Pasta Primavera and Salsa Verde Pasta Primavera means ‘Spring Pasta’ and can contain almost any kind of fresh vegetables, the volume of vegetables to the dish is subject to your liking.

INGREDIENTS 2 x Hake fillets approx 180g each 120g dried spaghetti Asparagus 1 garlic clove (finely chopped) Peas Green Beans Approx 80g Spinach Juice and zest of 1 large lemon Salt and pepper Salsa Verde 1 large bunch of flat leaf parsley (15g) 1 tbsp capers in vinegar 5g basil 5g mint 2 anchovy fillets 75ml extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 1 garlic clove

METHOD 1. To make the Salsa Verde add the parsley, capers, basil, mint, anchovies, olive oil, vinegar and garlic into a food processor and blend all the ingredients together. If you do not have a food processor, finely chop all 14

the ingredients and mix together. Once all the ingredients have been blended together it will create a herb oil dressing, add salt and pepper to your liking (You may need to add more olive oil if the mixture is too thick) the Salsa Verde is now ready. 2. For the Pasta Primavera fill a large pan with salted water and bring to the boil. Now add the pasta and cook according to the packet instructions, once cooked drain the pasta. 3. While the pasta cooks trim the asparagus and green beans and add to a separate pan of boiling water, cook off the asparagus and green beans until just cooked (Try not to overcook the vegetables as the asparagus and green bean adds texture to the pasta dish). Remove the Asparagus and Green beans and place into cold water, this it will stop the vegetables continuing to cook and keep their texture and colour. 4. In a new shallow pan add a touch of butter and the chopped garlic, fry for about a minute on a low heat (do not rapid cook as this will burn the garlic). Now turn the heat up and add the Asparagus,

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2012

Peas, Green beans and Spinach and stir-fry for approximately 2-3 mins or until all the vegetables are hot and the spinach has wilted. 5. Next add the cooked pasta to the vegetables and continue to cook, stir to combine all the ingredients and add the lemon juice and lemon zest, season with salt and pepper to your liking, leave on a low heat to maintain the temperature. 6. Check over the Hake fillets for any fish bones and remove any you find. Place a non-stick frying pan on a low heat, add 2 tbsp of olive oil and place the Hake skin side down in the pan, turn the heat to a medium setting. When the Hake skin is golden and crisp, turn over and continue cooking for approximately 3 minutes or until the Hake is cooked through. Cooking times vary depending on the thickness of the Fillet. 7. On a warm plate, place the hot pasta primavera in the centre ensuring each dish gets a good level of vegetables, remove the Hake from the pan and place on top of the pasta crispy skin side up. Now spoon the salsa verde around the pasta or over the fish and serve.

Saima Spice

Saima Spice is a contemporary, fully licenced restaurant and takeaway serving Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine situated in Cannock town centre. Having recently opened under new management (previously being Padma), Saima Spice has an exciting menu where you can enjoy a true Indian dining experience. My dining companion and I were greeted this evening this evening by Rasel Miah the new owner of Saima Spice who welcomed us into his restaurant. Rasel explained that since opening three weeks ago they were enjoying seeing new and regular customers and also telling us that the Mayor of Cannock dined in the restaurant the previous week where they held a charity night with proceeds going to McMillan Cancer. My partner and I were taken to our table in the restaurant, 16

passing through the large bar area with comfy sofas for customers awaiting their takeaways. With a contemporary décor throughout we were both very impressed and were eager to see the menu. After ordering a Cobra beer for us both which is served on draught we both began to browse through the mouth-watering dishes on the menu. With mains priced from £5.95 - £10.95 and each dish with its own flavour and spice specially prepared by the Chef. he would recommend? After asking what sort of dish we liked he said that we should try the Tawa chicken which is a very unique dish, a cross between bhuna and masala with its own special individual taste, using the very best herbs and spices and cooked with marinated chicken, tomatoes, onions and green peppers and cooked in a special dish called a Tawa and brought directly to the table served hot and sizzling. We also chose the chicken zeera which is cooked in slightly hot zeera herbs, onion, garlic and fresh coriander. We also ordered pilau rice and a peshwari naan to accompany both dishes.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2012

Once we had finished our drinks in the bar we were asked by our very helpful waitress Rachael if we were ready to be seated at our table in the restaurant, to which we both were. The restaurant was a comfortable modern space with wooden floor and tasteful décor. Once seated we were given the main menu and also the specials menu which changes daily and specially prepared by Anton Clarke (Sous Chef) and Jon Young Junior (Sous Chef). There were lots of dishes to choose from, each one sounding delicious and all very reasonably

priced, with starters ranging from £4.95 - £8.95 and mains courses from £6.45 - £22.95.

button mushrooms were excellent with lots of creamy sauce, perfect for dipping the bread into.

on a crumble base. This dessert matched the high standard of the earlier courses all being excellent.

I decided on the sticky pork ribs with watermelon, ginger, soy and chilli sauce to start, with my partner choosing the button mushrooms with pinot grigio, cream, garlic and stirata romana bread. For our main course we opted for the salmon served with green beans, butternut squash, stuffed bell peppers, pistachio and feta pesto and from the specials menu my partner went for the classic beef wellington served with wholegrain mustard mash, tender stem broccoli and red wine jus.

Once we had finished our starters we both said that we were more than looking forward to the main courses and when they arrived both dishes looked and tasted superb.

Afterwards we chatted to Tom the Deputy Manager who explained that The BGI has a weekday set menu served Monday - Friday 1200 - 1900 and 2 courses priced at £12.95.

The beef wellington was described by my partner as “ heavenly” with the vegetables being cooked to perfection. My salmon was also absolutely delicious and the vegetables and stuffed peppers were the perfect accompaniment.

Also taking place at The BGI is the Diamond Jubilee Garden Party with live music, outside cocktail bar, BBQ and the best beer garden in Barnt Green.

From the extensive and very impressive wine list we shared a bottle of Mount Cook Lily, sauvignon blanc. Our starters arrived and we both commented on how beautifully the dishes were presented and we couldn’t wait to try them! The sticky pork ribs were divine with the pork falling off the bone, the

We both decided that we would share a dessert and Jon Young (Junior Sous Chef) was more than happy to create a dish for us. We were presented with a trio of desserts which were sticky toffee pudding with sticky toffee sauce and clotted cream, warm chocolate brownie with white chocolate chip and dark chocolate sauce and Gelato which is an Italian style peach ice cream served

Every last Thursday of the month there is live music at The BGI. My partner and I have both agreed that we will be returning to The BGI as soon as possible!! The Barnt Green Inn, 22 Kendal End Road, Barnt Green, Birmingham B45 8PZ Telephone 0121 445 4949 www.barntgreeninn.co.uk

Lives g in v a S ty ri a h C e c n la Midlands Air Ambu Birthday! st 1 2 r u o ’s It e im T g by Savin

This year fundraisers will be biking, running, climbing, karting, sky diving and even plate smashing to ensure the anniversary year is one to remember.

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year! 2012 marks 21 years of life saving missions for the rapid response service and the charity would like to say thank you for all the local support received over the last 21 years, ensuring the service has remained operational. The charity completed its first airlift on May 21st, 1991. Since that historic day, the donation-funded service has responded to over 36,000 missions, made possible only by the support of local fundraisers and businesses. The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding and needs to raise over £6 million every year simply to remain operational. To mark the milestone occasion, the charity has created an action packed calendar of events throughout 2012, with something for everyone to get involved in and show their support. 22

Hanna Sebright CEO, said; “It is because of our passionate fundraisers, faithful supporters, loyal volunteers and incredible staff that Midlands Air Ambulance is able to celebrate 21 years of life-saving service and it is with this support that the charity will continue to go on and save countless more lives for many years to come. Over the last 21 years, we have been overwhelmed by your support and generosity. Despite a worrying economic climate, your support has never faltered and now more so than ever Midlands Air Ambulance Charity would like to thank you for your continued support.” There are still plenty of events and ways you can get involved throughout our 21st anniversary year. For details of our full calendar of events visit www.midlandsairambulance.com Who are we?: Midlands Air Ambulance serves the largest air ambulance region in the UK. This includes the communities of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire; representing a population in

excess of 6 million. Since flying its first mission in 1991, the Charity now responds to more than 3500 mercy missions each year making Midlands Air Ambulance one of the longest established and busiest air ambulance operators in the UK. The Golden Hour: If a patient reaches hospital within 60 minutes of injury, their chances of survival are dramatically increased. The maximum flying time to hospital from anywhere in the region is les than 15 minutes, meaning the charities rapid response is vital to saving lives. The cost: Each year it costs over £6 million just to keep the three charity helicopters operational. The charity receives no funding from the government or National Lottery so relies entirely on the support and generosity of local people and businesses. Our bases: The three air ambulance helicopters are based at Cosford Air Base, near Shifnal Shropshire (covering Shropshire and the West Midlands), Tatenhill Air Base, near Burton-on-Trent Staffordshire (covering Staffordshire and the West Midlands), and Strensham Services on the M5 Worcestershire (covering Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire).

ll Club

tba Hednesford Town Foo

Hednesford Town Football Club was founded in 1880. ‘The Pitmen’ have had many varied and exciting seasons during their proud history, culminating in 1997 when six thousand supporters travelled to the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough in the FA Cup Fourth Round to see one of the greatest ever set of players gloriously take the lead through the legendary Joe O’Connor before losing 3-2.

from their opponents has seen three disappointing ends to their campaigns. Being losing play-off semi-finalists in 2010 before losing on penalties in the final in 2011 to Salisbury City after a dramatic game which saw Hednesford twice take the lead before being pegged back and eventually gallantly losing in the cruellest way possible.

Hednesford also delivered another famous day for their supporters in 2004 when they won the FA Trophy at Villa Park with famous local face and Club legend Chris Brindley scoring a dramatic late volleyed winner to vanquish hot favourites Canvey Island 3-2.

Last season, The Pitmen briefly sat level on points at the top of the division with Chester FC in January before falling away and finishing in fifth place. Their promotion dreams were again dashed, this time to eventual play-off winners Bradford Park Avenue.

The Club currently ply their trade in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division and have reached the play-offs for the last three seasons.

The past two seasons has seen a huge turnaround in fortune for the Club off the pitch as the hard work of their Secretary Terry McMahon, Commercial Manager Jas Singh, the numerous volunteers behind the scenes and the stellar work of the Supporters Association has paid huge dividends.

Unfortunately, a combination of bad luck and inspired performances

Their average attendances have grown by sixty-five per cent in that time thanks to a winning combination on the field by Rob Smith and Larry Chambers along with the hard work in the community by volunteers within the Association. The website of the Club has been transformed and brought squarely into the new social network driven age with a busy fans forum, strong communication channels via a Facebook page and regular match and news updates via Twitter. 26

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2012

The community work has been a key factor in the increased presence of the Club in the local area with numerous events raising hundreds of pounds for local charities, supporting Hednesford’s Jubilee celebrations with a football match against the Soldier’s Working Men’s Club and also the appearance of their famous mascot ‘Pitman Pete’ at Cannock Carnival and numerous other events in the town. Keys Park, Hednesford’s home since 1995, also regularly hosts weddings, birthday parties, and a range of special evenings within the community including a recent charity Casino Night organised by the Cannock Rotary Club in aid of Action Kenya and the Hednesford Town Youth Team. The Club has also began to run its Community Programme with training sessions during school holidays run by Mick McMahon which has seen over seventy children take part during the Easter and February Half-Term holidays - the idea of the programme being to coach young children in both a technical and personal manner to improve their football and general life skills.

All eyes are now looking towards next season and, with The Pitmen again expected to challenge for promotion to the Conference North, another exciting season full of drama and excitement is almost guaranteed. Highlights will include the always hotly contested local derby with arch rivals Stafford Rangers, a 5-4 win at Keys Park last season for Hednesford will be remembered for decades to come, along with the visit of FC United of Manchester’s huge away support no doubt another interesting game. Club Chairman Steve Price is very understanding of the need to involve families within the Club and, along with the numerous community programmes and events detailed above, offers a family ticket to every league game of the season at an ‘Adult and Child for a Tenner’ entry price. The Club and the Supporters Association are always looking for volunteers to get involved with a myriad of different jobs and causes involving Hednesford Town and any people looking to get involved are encouraged to contact the Club via the numerous lines of communication detailed below.

e no priso k ta l il w n a m ir a h c w Ne The new Chairman of Cannock Chase Council won’t be taking any nonsense when he presides over meetings of Full Council as part of his new role - he was a prison warden for 24 years! Cllr Bob Todd was named Chairman for 2012/13 at the Council’s annual meeting on 23rd May, with the Hednesford Green Heath councillor, aged 69, taking on the chain of office from 2011/12 chair John Beddows. 28

Cllr Todd was born in Kirkcaldy in Scotland before heading to England in 1963, first to Wolverhampton, then on to Birmingham and finally settling in Cannock Chase in 1981. He spent 24 years of his working life as a prison warden before devoting himself to the local community. He was first elected to Cannock Chase Council in 1984 and has served the District on a number of occasions over the last 28 years, including a previous stint as Chairman in 2000-01. Part of the Chairman’s role over their term of office is to raise money for their chosen charity. Cllr Todd has chosen two: Cancer Research UK and Mencap. A number of fundraising events will be held

Cllr Todd’s consort will be his wife and fellow Cannock Chase councillor Diane Todd, with Cllr Doris Grice taking on the duty of Vice Chair. Cllr Bob Todd said: “It’s a privilege to be representing the District again as Chairman of Cannock Chase Council. I hope to raise as much money as I possibly can for my two chosen charities, which do so much good work in Cannock Chase and across the country. I’m looking forward to meeting lots of people during official engagements over the next 12 months and doing all I can to let everyone know what a great place Cannock Chase is.”

Whether you are a dedicated ‘petrol head’ or just looking for a family day out, you are guaranteed fantastic entertainment, just choose your meeting and come and see the finest motorsport in the UK. Hednesford Hills Raceway has over 40 years of motorsport history and is the fastest short oval raceway in the UK, with the speeds many cars achieve around its fearsome steeply banked turns really having to be seen to be believed. 36

Since the 1960s Hednesford Hills Raceway has provided stunning racing and great entertainment from Stock Cars, Hot Rods and Bangers in equal measure with a huge variety of other attractions in between. Some of the biggest events in the sport of short oval racing take place at the venue, with the annual Pre68 Classic Banger Day and 2 Litre Banger World Final seeing huge grids of cars raced to destruction, while the sky is lit up every Bonfire weekend with one of the Midlands’ biggest firework displays. The circuit was built in 1954 utilising the site of a former reservoir. The track is a full quarter mile length oval, with two banked corners, and a tarmac track surface surrounded by an Armco safety fence. The most spectacular event of the year is fast approaching as the annual National Championship weekend takes place on August 3rd-5th. This event is the ultimate celebration of high speed non-contact oval racing, and has been likened to a music festival with a better soundtrack! 2012 will be the 49th staging of the event and plans are already in motion for an extra celebratory year in 2013 to mark our very own Jubilee celebrations.

There is always a very strong Irish presence at this event too - will Northern Ireland champion John Christie finally take the National title he has chased for so long, or will Republic of Ireland star Shane Murphy recapture the title he won in 2010? The Stock Rods always race in huge numbers over the weekend with driver from across England, Scotland and Ireland in attendance. Last year’s title race was complete chaos and saw Andy Sturt take the title for England after a heated battle with Irishman Micky McFall and those two should be back to head up the challenge for their countries in these small but impressive 1400cc hatchbacks. American racing in miniature also comes to the hills in the shape of the MASCARs, and the under-16 racers battle it out in the Ministox.

Webbs is a family run business, now managed by Steve Webb, the son of founder Ken. The business has traded since 1958 and now has a large database of 30,000 customers throughout the midlands. In its early years the company sold a range of goods including furniture, carpets and lighting but electrical goods was the way to go. Webbs has never looked back and has traded through revolutionary change in this fast paced industry, from colour TV and video recorders to today’s LED screens and the latest SMART televisions. Steve Webbs says ”This is a great trade with fantastic new products continually coming to market. The best thing though is matching those products to the right customers. It’s that interaction that gives us all satisfaction and of course most importantly happy customers”. An experienced and enthusiastic team is key to Webbs success. Steve says “I am very proud of the people that work for me. Many have joined straight from school and have been here for over 20 years. That makes for a really warm, friendly atmosphere in the store, and of course a level of experience and expertise that other electrical retailers cannot match”.

Wall installation of televisions is big business for Webbs. Steve says “we can hide cables in walls, plaster over, and do whatever the customer wants really. What we have found is that people want somewhere reputable with a high street presence to do this kind of work for them, they can come and talk through exactly what they would like, and we offer free site surveys”. We like to think we offer a level of service that other electrical retailers will struggle to match. We deliver the same day, we respond to service calls the same day and leave loan TVs. We will run 2 TVs out to customers who cannot decide which one they think will suit their room best and let them decide at home. People love this service and we

This year’s hot product for Webbs is SMART TV. Steve explains “we mostly concentrate on Samsungs new range of SMART TVs; they have a full Web browser, really great apps and even a Skype camera. Properly installed they are a fantastic product, and they are beautifully styled. I would urge customers to come in and have a proper demonstration. This range of TVs really does represent the future of television”. So Webbs will continue to do as it always has deliver the latest technology with old fashioned service and courtesy to happy customers.

g the Flower beds are flyin

flag!

An airman who is set to leave for Afghanistan soon joined elderly residents at Caxton Court in Cannock for their Diamond Jubilee celebrations - and to see some flower beds that had been specially created for the occassion. Senior Aircrafts Man Glenn Lumsden from Tactical Supply Wing (TSW) at MoD Stafford visited Caxton Court, where residents have been helping to transform their flowerbeds with the help of Cannock Chase Council’s housing team and personnel from RAF Stafford into Union flags to mark the Diamond Jubilee. Elderly residents from sheltered housing schemes across the District have developed a strong relationship

with the airmen and airwomen from MoD Stafford. Last year, all five of Cannock Chase Council’s sheltered housing schemes collected boxes of toiletries which were shipped to Afghanistan for all those serving over the Christmas period. Councillor Frank Allen, Cannock Chase Council Housing Leader,

said: “I was delighted to see the flower beds at Caxton Court transformed into a work of art for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. It was lovely to see the elderly residents enjoying themselves and supporting the work of the armed forces. They do such a fantastic job and we should all be extremely proud of them.”

on the way rs a d n le ca g in cl cy re d n New waste a People across Cannock Chase have been urged to clear some space on their fridge to make way for the new waste and recycling calendar which will be dropping through letterboxes. The calendars will be distributed by waste crews and will be delivered to over 40,000 households - and they also contain a recycling challenge for residents. People are being urged to boost Cannock Chase’s recycling record even further by increasing the amount of food waste they recycle. Many residents may not be aware that food waste can be put into the brown recycling bin along with the garden waste.

Since 2005, when the Council launched its garden waste collection service, just under one million wheelie bins’ worth of garden and food waste has been recycled. The Council wants to do even better and increase the District’s recycling rate from an already impressive 54% in 2011/12 even further. Cllr Janos Toth, Cannock Chase Council Deputy Leader and Environment Portfolio Holder, said: “The brown bin garden and food waste that is collected across Cannock Chase is turned into peat-free compost. The more we can put into our brown bins, the more we can reduce our green bin waste, which goes to landfill - and we have to pay a landfill tax on every tonne of waste that we send to landfill. Recycling more means we can save money for Council Tax payers and do even more to protect the environment.

“The annual waste and recycling calendar informs residents which of their bins goes out when and includes arrangements for all public bank holidays, as well as a reminder about what items should go in each bin. The booklet also contains information about the District’s recycling centres and WEEE (waste electronic and electrical equipment) banks.”

We aim to provide practical assistance and solutions to make a real difference to the lives of members of the fire service community. Our Beneficiary Support Service offers a free confidential and impartial helpline for the fire and rescue community - providing advice and support on a broad range of issues - as well as having a nationwide network of professional staff and trained volunteers available to help locally. as recuperation breaks that provide the chance to relax in peaceful and tranquil surroundings, which can aid emotional recovery following illness, injury, or bereavement. It costs £9m every year to meet the needs of our beneficiaries, and with no government funding, we rely entirely upon donations from the general public and the fire and rescue community. In order for us to improve our services year on year, it is vital for us to have a reliable source of income that we can depend on. There are lots of ways that you can support us. You can donate to The Fire Fighters Charity by joining our Regular Giving scheme, playing The Fire Fighters Lottery, leaving a gift in your will, recycling your unwanted clothing and textiles, or by making a one-off donation. With everything

from Car Washes to Ladies Driving Challenges and overseas treks to bake sales, we also have a range of events for everyone to get involved with!

Why donate to The Fire Fighters Charity? Across the County, from Kidsgrove and Longnor in the north, to Wombourne and Kinver in the south, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is at the heart of your local community. The Service works tirelessly with its partners to make your County a safer place to live and work. Your local fire fighters do all they can to improve the lives and wellbeing of everyone in Staffordshire, and in particular they want to reduce deaths and serious injuries caused by accidental fires in the home. Through a mixture of pioneering campaigns and home fire risk checks, they’re doing just that!

Any amount you can afford helps us to provide practical assistance and solutions to make a real difference to the lives of members of the fire service community. Donating just £6 a month via our Regular Giving scheme allows us to take advantage of the Government’s Gift Aid policy, so we can claim an extra 25% (£1.50) at no cost to you or the Charity! And as little as £50 allows a fire service employee and their family to attend a day’s recuperation at one of our centres following cases of injury, illness, or bereavement.

erside Mill

za In Riv n a g a v a tr x E s e u q ti n A Any seeker of vintage treasures would do well to visit Bridgnorth’s Old Mill Antiques Centre - housed in an historic seed mill - on the banks of the River Severn. The centre has been open for 16 years and is as popular today as it was when it opened in 1996 - when literally thousands of visitors poured through the doors during the opening weekend. The Old Mill is one of the biggest antiques centres in the country, offering four floors of displays and stands featuring literally something for everyone. Traders from all over the UK and Europe sell their wares at the centre and it has continued to flourish at all times, despite occasional downturns in the antiques market. “We have always been successful and managed to weather difficult times within the industry,” says Old Mill co-director Denis Ridgway. “We try to appeal to everyone, not just the informed antiques collector. Our view is that antiques and collectables are of general appeal and can be displayed in any home whether period or contemporary.”

44

“You don’t have to be wealthy to collect and appreciate antiques, there are many items available at very affordable prices.” The choice at the Old Mill is tremendously varied. Jewellery, porcelain, militaria, pop ephemera, watercolours, oil paintings, prints, vintage furniture, silver, musical instruments - the list just goes on and on. Jewellery on sale includes a fantastic selection of engagement rings (both period and reproduction), costume jewellery and crystal, and ranges in price from just a few pounds right up to several thousand for items featuring precious stones. “We have 90 dealers operating at the Old Mill, from as far afield as Brussels and Berlin,” says Denis. “The range of items on sale is vast, catering for all kinds of tastes and budgets - and that’s why the Old Mill is so popular.” “People come here to browse and buy from all over the country, often spending hours here and having a break in our tearooms, which open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Some people stay all day!” “We’re always busy, especially at weekends and during bank holidays. I think part of the attraction is that people can browse at their leisure and buy if they wish, there is no pressure from our sales team - they are just on hand to help and advise if called upon.”

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2012

The Old Mill also sells a range of reproduction furniture, including pine and oak refectory tables made to measure, and period items include church pews, desks, dining tables and chairs, chaises, beds, day beds, wardrobes, armoires and cupboards. “Vintage furniture is lovely but sometimes the chairs in particular are not practical for everyday use in modern times - we’re a little heavier today than we were centuries ago,” says Denis. “Reproduction furniture provides all the old-fashioned charm and style with a more robust approach, plus sizes can be tailored to modern rooms - what worked in a Georgian mansion would not fit easily into the average home today!” The Old Mill is open seven days a week from 10am until 5pm. Parking is free and a UK-wide delivery service is available. The Old Mill’s sister company, Perry and Phillips Auctioneers, hold sales of antiques and collectables. Perry and Phillips dates back to 1835 and is a highly respected auction house attracting both vendors and buyers from all over the UK. Sale valuation mornings are held at Mill Street every Wednesday, from 10am until 2pm, and valuations of large items can be arranged in situ by making an appointment with auctioneer John Ridgway. Viewing is always the weekend and Monday prior to the auction and catalogues are available.

ylo Raising the Roof by Rob Ta

r

Rob Taylor lifts the lid on three of today’s hottest convertibles and discovers that open-top cars are best served by an open mind. Our eyes met at the traffic lights. I wasn’t at my best; hair unkempt, sunglasses askew, a gaily-coloured knitted scarf - a present from Granny - tied tight around my neck. But I was in an open-top Audi TT convertible and we’ve all seen enough TV car commercials to know how the story goes from here. Even the melodious irony of Lionel Richie’s Dancing on the Ceiling, now booming from the Bose sound system, couldn’t interfere with yet another example of ‘automotive aphrodisiac facilitates union of two beautiful people’. Well, I’d love to tell you that life does indeed imitate art and that beside me in the next lane of traffic sat some irresistibly beautiful siren, staring back at me with smouldering brown eyes. However, I was, in fact, looking into the cabin of a decrepit Ford Transit van, up close and personal and staring down the taunts of Wayne Murphy - building contractor at large - and his toothless workmate, Lee, while sitting in a unsettlingly effeminate, virgin-white convertible, accompanied by a cosmetically enhanced 62 year-old singer in a leather jacket, on a dreary morning in a deprived backwater of the concrete jungle. TIME TO PUT THE ROOF UP I’ve never been a fan of convertibles, viewing them to be impractical, irrelevant in this part of the northern hemisphere and chiefly the preserve of posers, who are besotted with the fatuous notion that one day rain and congestion will be blown away to leave an Edenic world of play. That, or they’ve been watching too much TV. So then, just like Mr Murphy and his hideously misspelled promise of ‘All tipes of work undertaken - no job two big’, my test trio of Audi TT 1.8 TFSI Sport, Mercedes SLK 200 Blue Efficiency Sport and BMW z4 2.0i sDrive had their work cut out. North Wales seemed to be a natural testing ground, with fast-flowing and windy roads, unfathomable Welsh road signs which resemble a game of Countdown - ZTTSLK - and more rain than the deluge visited upon Noah. If this group of shiny sybaritic metal was ever going to win me over it was going to have to be on my terms. After all, a slow ponce down into the city didn’t work. 46

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2012

Keen to get into something more masculine after the TT, my attention was piqued by the z4. Whereas the TT looks like it was hewn by the hand of the Divine, the z4 has something of the night about it. Forged in Satan’s chimney by minions enslaved to endlessly pound its body panels into an ultra-macho form, the z4 is more visceral than its test partners. More aggressive and harder riding, it is the fastest from 0-62mph (6.9 seconds), its 2 litre turbocharged engine delivering the 184bhp sweetly and seamlessly and, with 199lb ft of torque available as low as 1250rpm, it has more grunt than a Maria Sharapova forehand. Quiet and refined with the metal roof up, loud and raucous when dropped, this entry level model excites on a primitive level. It handles well too, even when things get hairy the z4 just hoovers up any lost follicles and sticks them to your chest. The SLK is all about quality and refinement and is a little less driver-orientated. Like the TT it has a 1.8 litre turbocharged engine and is a car you can live with everyday. Ingenious creature comforts such as neck-level heating system ‘Airscarf’ and ‘vario-roof’ (essentially a translucent panel set into the metal) promote sensory pleasures rather more civilised than a guttural exhaust note. But that’s not to say that the SLK is as soft as the TT’s roof: far from it, especially when fitted with the optional dynamic handling pack, which can be activated at the touch of a ‘sport’ button. This autobahn cruiser tops out at around 149mph and does 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds - so it’s no SLacKer in the speed stakes. In fact, if it falls down anywhere it is in the style stakes, mainly because of its newly homogenised ‘corporate face’ front-end, which - while proportionate on the SLS et al - seems awkward on such a dainty roadster. Like the meshing of ‘efficiency’ and ‘sport’ in its official title, it feels like an oxymoron. And so to the TT and my earlier unease. A few hours of spirited driving and games of ‘dodge the witless road-dwelling sheep’ later and I’m thoroughly convinced that it’s a proper driver’s car. It sounds great, handles well - especially with the optional magnetic ride dampers - has a fine driving position - low-slung with well spaced pedals - and its 158bhp and 184lb ft of torque feel ample and entirely capable of whisking you from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and onto 139mph. All three return around 42mpg, defecate roughly 150g/km of Co2 and cost - with scant attention to options - just under £30,000. So you really can go topless without needing bottomless reserves of cash. And after experiencing all three in near idyllic conditions, I must confess, I’m a bit of a convertible convert. My earlier experience at the traffic lights, I’ll just chalk up to Murphy’s Law. 01952 321334 | WWW.STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK.CO.UK

t to arrive in style New V40 se dley Wolverhampton at Brin

In just a few months’ time, the newly launched and much acclaimed Volvo V40 will saunter into the showroom at Brindley Wolverhampton. With on the road price starting at just £19,745, it’s no wonder that the order books at the dealership in Wolverhampton Road, Codsall, are already filling. “We knew this car would generate a huge amount of interest but we have been quite stunned with the volume of enquiries,” comments dealer principal Peterjohn Durrell. “First demonstrators will be in the showroom this summer and we think the order book will soon be bulging.” The premium hatchback emits CO2 as low as 94g/km for the D2 version with an accompanying fuel economy of 78.5 mpg*. Its 1.6-litre diesel engine has 115 hp and 285 Nm of torque and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox and start/stop function which means V40 drivers will benefit from improved running costs and the lowest vehicle tax bands (starting at £0 and subsequent years’ vehicle tax of £0**). Innovative and class-leading safety features include the world’s first

pedestrian airbag, which helps reduce the severity of pedestrian injuries in the event of an impact, and Volvo’s City Safety low-speed collision avoidance system City Safety, which has been further developed to operate at speeds up to 31 mph (currently 19mph on other models). Not surprisingly, the new V40 is aiming for a full star rating in the new, tougher 2012 Euro NCAP safety tests. Company car users will benefit from strong Benefit In Kind (BIK) figures, with the V40 D2 at £43 and £85 for 20% and 40% tax payers respectively. The V40 D2 offers the best BIK figures of all the premium 5-door hatchbacks, beating the BMW 116d ED (£45 and £90) and the Audi A3 1.6 TDI (£48 and £97). Designed to be a head-turner, the new V40 has a low and wide front look with a bold, expressive grille and an overall sporty feel. A panoramic glass roof exudes spaciousness whilst the ‘large car’ feeling is continued inside with features such as a wide instrument design. Due to appear on UK roads in September, the all-new V40 will be available in ES, SE and SE LUX trim with features that include:• Bluetooth is standard across the range

• Electronic Climate Control • World-class audio technology • Mobile app enable drivers to stay in touch with the parked car via a smart phone • Optional Electrical Power Assist Steering (EPAS) • Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) system • Advanced Stability Control • Corner Traction Control • Driving aids including Blind Sport Information System (BLIS); Lane Keeping Aid; Cross Traffic Alert; Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); Driver Alert Control • Full set of safety features include a safety cage; new driver’s knee airbag; and Roll Over Protection System

onth: Tip of the: inM oes Tom’s Topthof Pa Hammer T th ot n p ofoFo M To e es f us o Ca ip T p Tom’s To As the toe continues to be deformed, it will press up against the shoe and may cause corns.

• If a mallet toe has occurred, you are likely to suffer from a corn at the end of the toe.

There are two joints in the lesser toes and one joint in the large toe. If the deformity occurs in the lesser toes and in the joint nearest the nail, it is called a mallet toe.

• Infections and ulcers can also occur.

• If the deformity occurs in the lesser toes and in the joint nearest the foot, it is called a hammer toe • If the deformity in the lesser toes involves both of the joints, then the toe is referred to as a claw toe. • If the deformity occurs in the large toe, it is known as a trigger toe. • A hammer toe may be painful, especially when irritated by a shoe. • All four toe conditions may cause cramps in the toes, foot and leg due to the abnormal function of the tendons in the foot.

• A hammer toe may cause a corn on the top of the toe. • In severe cases a mallet toe, trigger toe, claw toe or a hammer toe may create a downward pressure on the foot, which can result in hard skin and corns on the soles of the feet.

• Make sure stockings, tights and socks are not too constrictive. • Apply moisturising cream to keep skin soft regularly. • Moulded toe separators, toe props and dorsal crescents. • See a Chiropodist/Podiatrist for removal of corns & callous.

Causes of Hammer Toes • Inappropriate shoes (high heels, tight shoes). • Flat feet can result in hammer toes. • High arch feet can also result in buckling the toes. • Bunions are a major cause of hammer toes. • Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Treatments for Hammer Toes • Wide fitting low heeled shoes & trainers. 01952 321334 | WWW.STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK.CO.UK
